Off-duty copper who took on terrorists gets Pride of Britain award

A PECKHAM copper who was stabbed during the London Bridge Terror attack on June 3 as he ran to help injured victims will receive a Pride of Britain award.

PC Charlie Guenigault, an emergency

response officer based in Peckham since 2014, was off-duty on the night of the attack.

The 25-year-old from Bexley ran to help a British Transport Police officer who was injured. He was then stabbed himself in the head, back, stomach and leg after confronting the knife-wielding terrorists who had ploughed through pedestrians on London Bridge just minutes before.

Good that the council has listened on multi-storey carpark

I

t’s good news that the council has listened and dropped Peckhamplex cinema and the multi-storey carpark from redevelopment plans.

The site had been earmarked in the council’s draft New Southwark Plan (NSP) as a location for a new tower block with 83 flats and ground-floor businesses.

Now we all know that London is in desperate need of more housing, but it does not make sense here, as the two places in question are thriving businesses. The Peckhamplex is loved by many as a cinema that doesn’t charge huge prices to go and watch a film, and it’s been that way for a long time.

The multi-storey isn’t just a carpark anymore - Frank’s Cafe, which sits on top of it, and the art gallery inside have helped make Peckham a cultural destination for people across London.

This couldn’t have been imagined years ago.

Community group Peckham Vision gathered over 5,000 objections to the redevelopment on its website. It’s a great example of people power, and a community group working effectively during public consultation.

And the council changed its plans. Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “The council has been working closely with the three main cultural organisations using the car park to agree longer-term leases, paving the way for the building to remain a key part of the cultural activity that has put Peckham in the creative heart of the borough, and London.”

The way that Peckham has grown and become popular has happened organically - it is something that town planners work hard to try to engineer. That is why it needs to be protected.

Congratulations to the Mayflower

C

ongratulations to The Mayflower pub for becoming the latest winner of the Southwark Heritage Association Blue Plaque.

The News has been working with the Heritage Association for fourteen years to get the borough’s rich history remembered.

There have been some noteworthy winners in the past, including actor Michael Caine and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and there were some deserving nominees this year. The historic Southwark Charities ran a close race.

The Mayflower is more than worthy of a plaque. It stands as a reminder of Rotherhithe’s connection to the New World America. This connection will be celebrated in 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower ship. Thousands of votes were cast. It’s great to see so many people proud of their borough’s history.

Newsagent closes after 32 years in Peckham

POPULAR PECKHAM newsagents Yogi News said farewell to its loyal customers on Saturday by throwing a farewell party.

The Bellenden Road business has been open for 32 years, under the ownership of Nayankumar and Chetna Patel.

The couple told the News they had seen the area “completely transform”, and had loved being able to raise their two daughters in the flat above the shop.

But when their landlord raised their rent, twinned with falling newspaper and magazine sales, they decided it was time to move on.

“The rent is going very high, and business is going down, so we can’t afford to stay,” Nayankumar, 56, said.

Chetna, 51, said: “We opened in 1985. It’s felt like our life-time.

Business was good, it was like the golden times back then. But we’re just a small shop, and people’s attitudes to shopping have changed.

“A lot of the people here [at the farewell party] have known us for the entire 32 years. And for a few weeks people have been turning up to say goodbye and wish us well.

“We owe everything to all of them.

We’re incredibly grateful. They’re like our family.”

Nayankumar, from Uganda, and Chetna, from the Indian state of Gujarat, both settled down in Peckham in their early twenties, after an arranged marriage.

Their daughters Kiran and Kejal are both physics graduates from Imperial College and King’s College London,

and have found topflight jobs as engineers.

The couple are now planning to go travelling for six months.

“We’re going to India for two months, then Australia, and we’re thinking of going on a safari in Kenya,” Chetna said. “After that we will look at doing some voluntary work. We feel like we deserve a break.

We’ve opened the shop seven days a week all through the year.”

Nayankumar said: “Bellenden has changed drastically. It used to be very deprived, and it’s turned into what it is now. You could call it Bellenden Village.

“Southwark Council has invested a lot of money into it over the years.

They got a grant from the EU, and they used that to give grants to small businesses to open in the un-occupied shops.

THE CHARLIE Chaplin pub in Elephant and Castle will close for good on January 5, after a lease extension was given by landlord and property developer Delancey Ltd.

The last minute lease extension was decided last week. Before that, the pub had been due to close on Tuesday, October 24.

Manager Craig Morrison told the News: “The lease was meant to finish today [Tuesday], this was going to be

the last day.

“But we have had an extension to January 5. So we will be here for Christmas and New Year. I’ll expect the pub to be packed.

“It’s a bit of a relief because our regulars don’t have anywhere else to go. There’s not many other places that are suitable where they can go drinking.

All the other pubs here are different, we’re a locals’ pub.”

A punter at the bar, Kevin Morgan, told the News: “I’ve been coming here since it opened. I used to live here, but now I come over from Brixton.

“There used to be a big staircase going down to a stage, and a balcony up top where you could watch bands play, and

where they had comedy nights.”

The pub was built as part of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre and Hannibal House office block scheme in in 1965. It was named after silent movie star Chaplin, who grew up in poverty in neighbouring Walworth and moved on to become a Hollywood legend.

The Coronet Theatre next door is also due to close after its final event on New Year’s Eve. The pub, the theatre, and the shopping centre are all scheduled for demolition in 2019, as part of Delancey’s plans to redevelop the site, although planning permission has yet to be decided by Southwark Council.

PC Guenigault underwent a three-hour operation to have his spleen removed after the attack, and is since recovering.

PC Keith Palmer, the brave policeman who was stabbed to death defending the Houses of Parliament from a terrorist on March 22, will also be honoured with a Pride of Britain Award. The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, October 30.

Deputy commissioner Craig Mackey praised both PC Palmer and PC Guenigault. “All those so deeply affected by the horrific attacks suffered by our great city this year remain in our thoughts.

The lives that were taken and those who were injured,” he said. “For PC Charlie Guenigault there was no such thing as ‘off

duty’. That summer night in Borough Market, Charlie ran towards the terrorists, putting himself in danger to protect the public. Without thought for himself, his bravery undoubtedly helped others.

“Helping, supporting, running to the aid of the public or an injured colleague, putting others before ourselves, showing courage and compassion. These we humbly call our values. Values that the men and women of the Met show every day.

“Today we celebrate Keith and Charlie.

I am proud to work in an organisation that can call these men colleagues. They are everyday heroes. I am proud to see them recognised for these qualities by the Pride of Britain Awards.”

The three London Bridge terrorists were shot dead by police within eight minutes of the first emergency call at about 10pm on June 3. An inquest into the death of five men and three women killed was opened on June 13. The full inquests will be confirmed at a later date.

ANOTHER ROAD incident involving an elderly man in Peckham High Street has renewed calls for the junction to be revamped and made safer.

Initial statements from police on Tuesday said they had been called after receiving multiple reports of a collision between a male pedestrian in his 80s, and a lorry.

The Met later confirmed the man had not been hit by the lorry, but had fallen down in front of it, as he walked across the road in front of the Kentish Drovers pub.

The elderly man was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was later reported to be in a “stable condition” with injuries “not thought to be life-threatening”. An Air Ambulance was called, but not used.

The incident follows the tragic death of 74-year-old Peckham man Peter Allingham, who died on September 4 after a collision with a lorry, as he crossed the road in front of the Kentish Drovers. On September 4, 2015, pensioner Mary O’Leary also died in a collision at the same crossing.

Hamlet stadium developer drops planning appeal Meadow had lodged appeal after council refused planning application

THE DEVELOPER wanting to build a new stadium for Dulwich Hamlet FC and 155 flats at Champion Hill has dropped its planning appeal against the council.

A letter submitted by developer Meadow Residential LLP, to the council’s planning department on October 20, confirmed it has abandoned its appeal. The appeal (previously scheduled for December 12) was requested as Southwark had refused to approve the planning application Meadow submitted in March 2016.

The decision ties directly with a separate dispute over Hamlet’s recently-expired lease on a section of Greendale Fields, a protected area classed as Metropolitan Open Land.

The council refused to renew Hamlet’s lease, which jeopardised Meadow’s plans that included relocating Hamlet’s stadium on to a section of Greendale.

Dulwich Hamlet then sought legal action to force the council to renew its lease. But on October 16, Hamlet was dealt a blow when a judge ruled that the club must pay a £150,000 “security fee” (within fourteen days) before any hearing regarding the lease dispute could go ahead. Meadow said it would not help pay the fee, and nor would it help pay the council’s legal fees, should the authority have won the case.

On Monday, a Meadow spokesman: “Whilst confident of our appeal position, we became increasingly concerned that the council were determined to block Meadow and

DHFC’s application at all costs and this was confirmed when the Council refused to renew the DHFC lease on the Green Dale land.”

The News understands that the club also has no appetite to continue its fight for the Greendale lease.

Meadow said in a statement said: “[We] are now reviewing our own legal and commercial position. We do not own the club and cannot comment further on [its] future.”

On Monday, Liam Hickey, chair of Dulwich Hamlet’s football committee told the News: “We have no comment to make. We are still awaiting information regarding the issue involving the lease on Greendale, or the appeal.”

The Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust (DHST) also said in a statement: “DHST will continue to pursue its objective of ensuring that DHFC has a secure, long-term home in East Dulwich and that it is a sustainable, community football club.

“We will endeavour to provide our members and other fans with further information as and when we are able to do so.”

Southwark Council leader Peter John said: “Southwark Council has sometimes been accused of being a soft touch, but our view on this matter demonstrates we always have residents’ and, in this case, fans’ interests at heart. Southwark Council objected to Meadow’s planning application on a number of grounds, including its limited affordable housing provision. I want to reaffirm that from the start of this process and going forward, Southwark Council has never wanted to jeopardise the future of the club and we remain committed to this end.”

Dulwich Park screwdriver mugger left dog walker with life changing injuries

A MUGGER who left a dog walker fighting for his life, after he stabbed him in the head with a screwdriver in Dulwich Park, is facing years behind bars.

Jermaine McDonald, 26, leapt off his bicycle and launched a vicious unprovoked attack on Italian furniture designer Sinuhe Pianella, 31, in Dulwich Park on April 27.

Mr Pianella was taking his Spaniel puppy Pinot for a walk, and was sitting on the grass chatting to Marilena Stracke, when the thug demanded his wallet and phone.

When Sinuhe tried to fight off his attacker, he was stabbed in the head and chest and airlifted to hospital, where he spent six weeks in intensive care at King’s College Hospital.

Ms Stracke handed over her handbag containing cash, cards and keys to the mugger, who used them to buy a litre bottle of Bacardi and cigarettes at a nearby Co-op in Forest Hill.

McDonald was arrested on April 30 when officers recognised him from CCTV using the cards at the Co-op.

Prosecutor Deepak Kapur said McDonald struck “significant and substantial blows to incapacitate”, and had been riding around the park looking for a victim.

“On the 27 April Mr McDonald, we say, for at least an hour or so before the events in that park, had been riding around looking for a target,” he said.

“Having found his target, Mr Pianella and thereafter Ms Stracke, he did within minutes what he had always intended to do.”

McDonald claimed he was acting in self-defence after he went to speak to the pair and got a “funny look”.

But a jury of eight men and four women rejected his version of events and took four hours to convict him, after a week-long trial at Inner London Crown Court.

As the jury foreman delivered the unanimous verdict, McDonald slumped to his seat and sighed in the knowledge that he will now serve a jail term.

Judge Stephen Kramer QC said: “It is clear to me that I should need to see a pre-sentence report on the question of dangerousness.

“I would not imagine anyone would argue against that, the only other question on my mind is whether I need to read a psychiatric report after this unprovoked attack.”

SINCE THE attack, Sinuhe’s partner Emily Hobday, and her brother Jack Hobday, have led a fundraising campaign.

They have so far raised £13,000, which will all to go King’s College Hospital, where Sinuhe was treated and cared for.

After the hearing, Jack told the News Sinuhe remains in rehab with paralysis in the right side of his body, and some memory loss, and that his injuries have “changed his life”.

“There’s permanent effects and it’s difficult to know how much he will recover. He has memory issues, which has been a big change in him. And there’s a degree of paralysis in the right side of his body. He really wasn’t expected to survive. It’s pretty horrendous,” Jack said.

“We are very keen to see a Southwark equivalent of the Ealing

proposal but we would like it to be fairly stronger.

“It’s disappointing that it’s taken a bylaw to ensure that women get access to health care advice and treatment.

“When the police challenged them [the protesters] for filming people going, they said the cameras weren’t on but the person going in believes they are being filmed."

Mr Coyle said it was also "quite an intimidating experience" for workers

at the clinic who have to walk past the protesters to get to work.

The News contacted Southwark Council for a response. Councillor Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said, “I agree that women should be allowed to attend the clinics without the distress caused by protesters immediately outside.

“We have already been in touch with Ealing Council in order to make progress on this matter and we may be included in their action.”

Council apologises over fire alarm system

RESIDENTS AT one of the Ledbury Estate tower blocks were evacuated twice in three days due to false fire alarms – at 3am on Saturday and 8am on Monday.

About 50 households in Bromyard House, Commercial Way, were affected by the disturbance. Many residents were stuck outside wearing their pyjamas, in cold and rainy weather.

Former Bromyard House resident Danielle Gregory, of the Ledbury Action Group, told the News: “Somehow it turned itself on. And each time it automatically calls the

fire brigade and everyone has to evacuate.

“Some people had them going off in their flats and said it was deafening.

Most people evacuated and waited in the rain. And again [on Monday] they were out there with their children and in their pyjamas.”

The council has confirmed the false alarms were caused by a faulty smoke detector, which triggered other alarms in the fourteen-story tower via its “wireless booster system”. The problem was then due to be fixed on Tuesday.

Complaints were also made about the conduct of fire marshals, who since June, when serious fire-safety issues were discovered, have been deployed at the four towers to assist

with an evacuation.

Danielle added: “At 3am, not all of the marshals were in place. Some of them didn’t help the vulnerable residents, and they had to be helped down stairs, but it was really chaotic.

There was no direction from the marshals. It was a shambles.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Everyone working on the Ledbury estate is extremely unhappy about what happened over the weekend and I can’t apologise enough for the upset and worry it caused to our residents. Our new communal fire alarm in Bromyard went off despite the fact the work to install the alarm has not been completed yet.

“The director of the Ledbury estate, Mike Tyrrell, has also met with residents affected and the manager of the firm that provides the fire wardens and as a result several changes have been put in place both to personnel and procedures.

“The fire wardens remain on site and Southwark staff are available at the TRA Hall 24 hours a day, seven days a week, if anyone has any concerns.”

The two incidents follow an evacuation at Skenfrith House on October 7, caused when a resident left his home with a hotplate running.

A new central heating system was fully installed on October 14 to replace the four blocks’ gas system – after structural surveyors discovered they had been unsafe to carry gas since they were built in 1968. A new fire alarm system is also due to be fully installed in November.

A KENNINGTON primary school has been praised for its work to help limit air pollution by getting kids walking to school.

Charlotte Sharman Primary School

was visited on October 11 by councillor Octavia Lamb, the council’s deputy member for air quality, and a Greater London Authority auditor.

Both noted that the majority of pupils arrived on foot, and that the school had been an early adopter of

the council’s School Travel Plan to promote walking and cycling.

Cllr Lamb said: “It was wonderful to talk to teachers and students at Charlotte Sharman School and see what they have achieved in terms of improving air quality, and learning how they plan to take this forward.”

Stephen Bourne collected the fellowship on October 16 at the Royal Festival Hall, at one of the university’s huge graduation ceremonies.

Stephen, who has regularly appeared in the News, said: “They awarded it to me for my contribution to diversity, and to gay history and black history.

“I’ve never been to a graduation ceremony, so it was a new experience Stephen Bourne, with graduation guests Anni Domingo; Cleo Sylvester; Shirley Patterson

for me. It was very grand and exciting, and wonderful to see 500 students graduating.”

In a speech to the gathering of students, he said: “There’s no doubt in my mind that we live in a conservative country (with a small c). By and large, British people don’t like change. But if there’s anything I’ve learnt since school, it’s that to overcome adversity, it’s best to be friendly and persuasive.”

In a citation for Stephen’s followship to the law and social sciences school, the university praised his most significant published works, including: Mother Country (2010); The Motherland Calls (2012); Black Poppies (2014); and Fighting Proud (2017).

THE ANNUAL Albins Christmas Memorial Service will take place on December 6, at the Albin Memorial Garden in Southwark Park.

Simon Dyer, director of FA Albin & Sons, which has organised the event for sixteen years, said: “It’s something we do every year, and

that our dad started.

“It’s to remember everyone we have lost this year, and in previous years – everyone who has lost someone is welcome to come.

“We have Christmas carols and a big fireworks finale. We’ve ministers from local churches giving readings and prayers. Afterwards people stay for mulled wine and mince pies.

“It’s happy and sad and emotional.

Last year we had 1,600 people come along.”

The service will start at 7pm, with gates to the park open at 6pm.

Albins will also be offering guests the chance to write their late loved ones a message on a star, which will be placed together on the memorial garden Christmas tree.

New Road, who died of natural causes, was taken to a mass at St Gertrude’s in Debnam’s Road, before he was cremated in Honor Oak. The procession was led by Lucy Howard of TDM Funeral Services. Plans to buy extra trains for two lines put on hold

PLANS TO buy extra trains to tackle overcrowding on the Jubilee and Northern lines have been put on hold.

The Jubilee line was expected to get ten new trains to operate a 36 trains per hour service, while seventeen trains were supposed to be bought for the Northern line as part of the upgrade.

However, Transport for London confirmed the upgrade had been “temporarily paused”.

Train drivers’ union ASLEF has claimed the delay will mean overcrowding will get worse and could result in an “outright cancellation” of the project altogether.

Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s organiser on London Underground, said: “It is deeply disappointing and looks like a classic example of making medium-term savings that damage the long-term ability of the Tube to cope with London’s growth. “Without new trains, overcrowding will get worse and worse, and the Northern line risks returning to the days when it was known to millions

of Londoners as the ‘misery line’.”

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, said he would be writing to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to outline his concerns and urge him to assign funding to the “vital upgrade”.

“This major delay is extremely disappointing for us, and for residents, who share our view that the Jubilee line upgrade is central to our plans for positive improvements to the Canada Water area,” he said. “We need these additional trains to meet current and future demand and for residents to easily connect with the rest of London.”

network development, said: "The benefits from the largest investment programme in the Tube's history, combined with the huge capacity increases coming soon from the arrival of the Elizabeth line, means that we are temporarily pausing our plans to buy more trains for the Jubilee and Northern lines. Our modernisation programme and in-depth technical work by our new combined engineering division has improved performance and reliability.

“This means we can increase the frequency of our existing trains without the immediate need for new trains, making journeys quicker and more comfortable for thousands of customers every day.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has purchased a huge area of industrial land by Old Kent Road for £15m.

The 2.5 acre patch at 709 Old Kent Road – nearly the size of two football pitches – will be used by the council for occupational depots.

The sale was made by City & Provincial Properties PLC, with advice from Bermondsey-based firm Kalmars.

The land sits next to the huge Veolia recycling centre, and is occupied by three tall, circular gas holders.

Cllr Fiona Colley, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance, performance and modernisation, said: “The council’s property portfolio provides a vital source of income. We have made a number of purchases this year that will, overall, bring in an extra £2m of income per year to help fund essential council services.

“As part of the council’s property portfolio we have invested in this part of Old Kent Road, which not only

increases our land ownership stake in this new regeneration area but also has the potential to help us relocate some facilities in the short term, should we need to. Eventually it can be brought forward for redevelopment as part of the wider Old Kent Road development programme.”

Richard Kalmar, managing director of Kalmars and chair of the Southwark Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is an important site for the transformation of Old Kent Road area.

“Historically it was used for a smelly and dirty use by the South Metropolitan Gas Company when the area developed as heavy factories around the Surrey Canal.

“While in the long-term the site has potential for redevelopment and regeneration, Southwark’s purchase will enable it to bring together a number of operational depots and teams, from around the borough, in one location. City & Provincial have sorted out this complicated site enabling its sale – for the benefit of Southwark, and its residents, through improved efficiency.”

RESIDENTS LIVING near the centre of Grosvenor's proposed £500million Bermondsey masterplan site have raised concerns after seeing the final plans.

The property company revealed its final proposals to the public earlier this month, as it prepares to submit a planning application to the council.

The proposals include towers up to 28 storeys high, a new home for Compass School, and up to 1,350 rental homes “on a range of discounted market rents” at its site on part of the former Peek Frean biscuit factory.

But residents living in Lockwood Square, on the Four Squares Estate, in Drummond Road, have raised concerns about overshadowing from tall buildings, noise, and more pressure to GP practices after seeing the plans.

Grosvenor proposes to build two brick warehouse-style buildings - one eight storeys high, and the other stepping from eight to fourteen storeys - at the corner of Clements Road and Drummond Road. Two conjoining brick townhouses

are also planned: one ranging from five to seven storeys and facing onto Keeton’s Road, and the other stepping from seven to ten storeys facing onto Drummond Road.

Ivy Sawyer, 87, who lives in a low-rise flat opposite the current Compass School in Drummond Road, fears she will be completely overshadowed by the development.

Meanwhile, Sheila Fairfield, 79, claims residents were told in the past by previous developers Workspace that the buildings in Drummond Road would be in keeping with the estate.

"Whoever the developer was last time before Grosvenor, they came to meet us at our tenants' and residents' hall and they said the buildings would be the same as our block at six storeys," she said.

"The higher blocks further away won't affect us as much but this one here will overshadow us; six storeys would have been comfortable."

Bartosz Pucilowski, 37, moved to the estate four years ago with his wife and two children, now aged ten and six. His main concern was the noise the building of the development would cause.

"If they are going to work all day that's really going to destroy our life," he said.

"My daughter has DiGeorge syndrome and one of the problems is her hearing; she is very sensitive to the high-pitched noises so she is always wearing headphones at school.

"Next year my daughter is going to start at Compass so I'm worried about the noise and when they are studying after school it will be very hard because they need silence."

"I'm also concerned about the security with children running around the streets there when lorries are driving around," he added.

Pat Duke, 81, said the proposals to build shops on the ground floor of the new buildings could be scrapped and residents could live on the bottom level to make the buildings lower instead.

A spokesperson for Grosvenor Britain & Ireland said: “We are keen to hear all

views and concerns, given the ambition of these proposals. In consulting on our design this year, we have been clear there would be some taller buildings. We are proposing that taller buildings are located around the centre of the development, to minimise their impact on neighbouring properties and to see that the development as a whole is integrated with its surroundings.

“On GP services, we share the wish to see high-quality provision for both new and existing residents. Southwark Council's Community Infrastructure Levy will require us, through the development, to make a sizeable financial contribution to local infrastructure, which includes healthcare.

So we will continue to work with the Council and local healthcare providers to explore the scope for improving existing local facilities.

“And on noise during construction, we understand concerns about it and will work closely with residents to minimise it. Building work would be staggered to minimise its impact, we would agree a detailed management plan with the Council and we would continue talking to local residents throughout development to lower its impact during construction.”

Buried with a sword - Viking enthusiast, whose work led from steam trains to pub landlord, is laid to rest

THE TRAGIC death of Peckham man Peter Allingham was marked with loving tributes and stories about his life at his funeral last week.

For some 30 years Mr Allingham was barman and assistant secretary of the Peckham Liberal Club. For the last two years, he adopted a new perch at the Kentish Drovers pub, returning to the same table every morning and evening.

The 74-year-old died on September 4, at 10am, as he crossed Peckham High Street after leaving the pub, but came into collision with a lorry.

His death was two years to the day that Mary O’Leary, 76, was in a collision with a skip lorry in the same section of the High Street.

At the funeral, tributes to Mr Allingham were led by his best friend, 72-year-old Reginald Stone from Hammersmith.

The two met in the ‘70s, when Mr Allingham was also the publican of The Blackhorse in St Martin’s Lane, Soho, and The Old Shades in Whitehall.

“He was an incredibly chatty guy and we just got talking,” Reginald said. He told the News they bonded over their shared love of Viking war re-enactments.

“We both loved that you got to live this

fantasy,” Reginald said. “You would meet up with other Vikings and go all over the country. There were about 600 of us in the Viking Society. We would meet up and spend a few days camping and drinking and having an incredible time hitting each other with swords and axes. Some of the most incredible stories came out of those adventures.”

An earlier period of Mr Allingham’s life was spent working on a steam train, as the fireman – tasked with endlessly shoveling coal into each machine’s furnace as they hurtled between Birmingham and London.

Until February this year, Mr Allingham worked in the Oxford Street Marks and Spencer’s operations team. A spokeswoman for the shop said: “He’d been with us 33 years... He will be really fondly remembered by the team, and a number of them will be attending his funeral.”

Mr Allingham spent his colourful life with childhood sweetheart George Boardman, whom he met aged seventeen. The two owned a house together in Elm Grove, Peckham, and had run the two central-London pubs together.

But Reginald – and Mr Allingham’s neighbour Simon Beresford – say that losing George to cancer in 2015 had a

dramatic effect on his life.

Simon told the News: “When George was dying they were both by chance in hospital at the same time [at King’s College Hospital] because Peter had injured his shoulder. So the doctors were able to make it that they would be together, with their beds put beside each other for George’s last hours.”

Allingham was deeply affected by losing George. “It put him into a state of shock and depression. I don’t think he knew what to do with himself after that,” Simon said.

It was discovered recently by Reginald and Simon that Mr Allingham suffered from diabetes. He was notoriously tight lipped about his health, but anyone who knew Mr Allingham would have known

of his more noticeable ailments, such as his reliance on a crutch.

Eros Biavati, assistant manager at the Drovers, said: “[Peter] didn’t talk much but he was always pleasant, a nice bloke.

He would come in every day at 8am and have traditional breakfast; no sausage, extra mushrooms, bacon well-done, and drink two cappuccinos.

“He was always the first person to arrive. Now there’s no one ever here anymore from 8am to 9am.

“Then he’d come back in the evening, and drink two Strongbows and a Port.

The other regulars would help him get his drink, because he struggled to walk up to the bar.”

Eros said he used to order the port Cockburns Fire Ruby – especially for Mr Allingham, as he was the only one who drank it. And they kept a special glass for him – “a little chalice with gold around the rim”.

Mr Allingham’s funeral was held on October 17 at the Bretchley Gardens, and a wake was held at the Peckham Liberal Club.

His coffin led off bearing his old Viking sword, helmet and drinking horn.

Reginald said: “All Viking warriors enter the afterlife with their sword, and they go to Valhalla – the great Viking Hall where he will drink and feast forever.”

Peckham Levels to open in December

Site had been earmarked for tower block

The much-anticipated Peckham Levels centre for small businesses and artists at the renovated multi-storey carpark will open on December 8.

PROPOSALS TO redevelop Peckhamplex cinema and the multi-storey carpark have been abandoned by Southwark Council.

The council had earmarked the site in its draft New Southwark Plan (NSP) as a location for a new tower block with 83 flats, and ground-floor businesses.

The finished NSP will contain plots of land across Southwark for “potential” redevelopment in the “long term”. But it was speculated that redevelopment of the carpark and cinema would follow 2022, as popular businesses Frank’s Café and the soon-to-open Peckham Levels had leases due to expire in 202122.

Sealing the deal, the council has said the multi-storey will not appear in the next draft of the NSP, which will be put to vote by Southwark’s cabinet members on October 31.

Yesterday, councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “As an unused car park we thought this site had more potential through re-development.

“However, following extensive consultation with local residents and recognising the fantastic work carried out by Bold Tendencies and Peckhamplex, and with the exciting new project at Peckham Levels, we have decided to secure the future of this site in its current form for the longer term.

“The council has been working closely with the three main cultural organisations using the car park to agree

longer-term leases, paving the way for the building to remain a key part of the cultural activity that has put Peckham in the creative heart of the borough, and London.”

The council’s turnaround followed dedicated campaigning from local pressure group Peckham Vision, who gathered more than 5,000 objections to the redevelopment via its website, during a public consultation on the NSP in the spring.

John Reiss, chairman at Peckhamplex, also said the potential redevelopment had been postponed for “at least 20 years”.

In September, Eileen submitted an Asset of Community Value application for the multi-storey to Southwark Council. The application is still pending.

The project will see seven storeys converted in 50 studio spaces let on cheap rents to local artists and entrepreneurs working in design, fashion, food, crafts, film, architecture and social enterprise.

The project was due to fully open in September. But Peckham Levels Ltd said the delay was caused by their construction contractors going into administration.

A statement from Peckham Levels said: “You’ll be aware that there has been a little uncertainty around our final opening date. In short, the company contracted to carry out our building work went

into administration. This was a very unexpected challenge that set us back several weeks, but the good news is there is a new team on site pushing the project forward, so we can finally look forward to all the fun stuff.”

After nearly 300 people applied, memberships were offered to 70 applicants, who were announced in July.

Its organisers have also announced three more members who will set up shop, including designer Etemi Otubu (handmade garments from repurposed materials); bespoke jewellery maker Ella Bull; and The Movement Factory dance workshop.

Binmen help Harry dump the dummies

Parents enlist local crew to give up comforter

PARENTS TRYING to wean their toddler son from dummies enlisted some unlikely help from bin men in East Dulwich.

Helen Kelsall and Paul Clark from Underhill Road wanted to give their two-year-old son Harry a distraction to help him get used to life without his dummy.

Paul explained: “We thought it was going to be a huge problem as he was really, really attached to it.

When he went to bed at night he would always ask for ‘dummy, dummy, dummy’ before going to sleep.”

His parents hatched an ingenious plan to dump the dummies for good, and fortunately their local crew from Veolia were only too happy to lend a hand with the unusual request.

The toddler is obsessed with rubbish trucks and looks forward to seeing the friendly team of rubbish and recycling collectors every Tuesday morning on his way to and from nursery.

see Harry, and encourage him to hand over his dummies. They explained to Harry that his dummies could be recycled and used for babies who needed dummies more than him.

In exchange, Harry got a goody bag with his own high-vis jacket, a storybook all about a special rubbish truck called Munch, and his very own toy truck.

happy to comply and spent the morning with bin men Benny, Michael and Patrick.

Harry is now sleeping well without his dummies and has even told his parents: “Harry big boy, baby dummies.”

Helen and Paul said: “We can’t thank the crew enough for helping Harry giving away his dummies and for generally being the best and friendliest crew in the world!"

Historic boozer, linked to ship that took Pilgrims to America, tops poll

THE VOTES have all been counted, and we can announce that the Mayflower Inn has won this year’s Southwark Heritage Association Blue Plaque.

The historic boozer in Rotherhithe Street will be the 59th recipient since the scheme began in 2003.

Out of the seven nominees, the Mayflower received 1,160 votes.

The runners up were: • Southwark Charities (1,114) • The Half Moon public House (264) • Sir James Black OM (159) • Thomas Middleton (66) • Eric Dubuisson (32) • Kennington Theatre (17) Veronica Alden of Southwark Heritage Association told the News: “It’s brilliant that the community was so behind this, and so many people took the time to vote.

“There’s already a great collection of blue plaques in the area, including the

Sands Film Studios, and one for Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

“It was a close call between the Mayflower and Southwark Charities, so we hope they put themselves forward again next year.”

The Mayflower Inn - formerly the Spread Eagle (1550) – is historically linked to the famous Mayflower ship that transported Pilgrims to settle in America (or the New World) in 1620.

The ship completed its return journey in 1621, and captain Christopher Jones was hailed a hero. Jones was also said to have part-owned the Inn. In the area’s industrial past, the pub also

operated as a post office, and because of its American connection, it maintains a tradition of selling both American and British postage stamps over the counter.

The previous blue plaque recipient was Surrey Docks Farm. Other past recipients include Charles Dickens, Rio Ferdinand, Sam King, and Octavia Hill.

The scheme was set up by Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark News, in conjunction with Southwark Council.

A ROTHERHITHE primary school invited a Voice UK finalist to celebrate Black History Month at a special event.

Peckham singer Michelle John, who appeared on the ITV singing competition, attended Redriff Primary School's Black History Night on Thursday, October 19.

Crowds were entertained with singing performances from the school's choir, as well as the first ever performance from the school's dance group on the night.

Guests also got the chance to indulge in a feast of food from all around the world.

Black History Month is designed to recognise history, experiences and accomplishments of black people.

The UK version of the annual event, which began in 1987, not only recognises the contributions of those from African and Caribbean heritage, but those from Asia too.

The day-long “Summer of Athletics”

brought together children from seven local Southwark primary schools, including Albion Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School. The children learned turbo javelin, high jump, and took part in relay races.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL last week announced that they had removed the Peckham Multi Storey building from the New Southwark Plan (NSP).

This is the building which houses Peckhamplex cinema, Bold Tendencies and Franks Cafe, and the soon to be launched Peckham Levels.

These businesses provide hundreds of jobs, and much loved social and entertainment activities for thousands of people.

This is a resounding success for sustained local community action.

It follows Peckham Vision's five year campaign involving thousands of local people seeking a more informed decision about the future of this site.

Peckham Vision would like to thank everyone who supported our campaign for a review of the Council's plan to demolish the building and redevelop the site.

So to everyone who bought a Tshirt, tote bag, tea towel or card, sent an email, attended a meeting, leafleted, posted their views in a web discussion, shared posts, tweeted, took photos, studied planning documents, told their friends, dropped into our shop, or some of many other actions, THANK YOU. Spa residents are dismayed

IN RESPONSE to your article ‘Student digs still too high’, Southwark News, October 12, 2017.

Bermondsey Spa residents reeled in dismay as the real implications of a development proposal at Spa Road were revealed by professional experts.

Residents attending an emergency meeting at the Buddhist Centre in Spa Road learned from a panel (which included town planners) that if proposals for a massive 7 storey building dwarfing all surrounding property are agreed, the reality for many local people will mean : *Local residents losing up to 60% of natural light to their homes *The end of privacy for local residents in their homes *A massive influx of over 200 people living on one site with huge potential for noise disturbance in the neighbourhood The planning application is for student accommodation for 205

people. Concerned residents have until 28th October to object to the council.

Whilst most people are not opposed to the site being developed, they want an acceptable compromise where the development size is scaled back to allow people to continue enjoying their homes.

Many local people have pointed out that drawings submitted by the developers are misleading. They show a development which looks to be the same size as the Victorian Grade II listed building next door.

The reality is that it is at least double the size.

Barnardo’s welcomes Government plans THE GOVERNMENT’S plans to make it safer for children to go on the internet are welcome and could have a positive impact for countless young Londoners.

As the UK’s largest children’s charity, Barnardo’s has been calling for a safer internet and for parents to be more aware of the technology children are using and who they’re talking to online. Nowhere is that more important than in our digitally connected capital.

Our concern is that the digital revolution is enabling the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and young people through the internet and mobile devices.

The Government’s new draft Internet Safety Strategy represents a golden opportunity to make social media companies more responsible for the content that may appear on their sites.

We have recommended the

industry introduces measures to prevent online abuse, such as ensuring current and future games and apps have safeguards to prevent children being harmed, with users clearly informed about privacy settings. We also believe children should be taught about online dangers in compulsory ageappropriate relationship and sex education lessons being introduced in 2019.

There must be an online code of practice that every social media company signs up to. Companies also need to build in basic safety features from the outset during the design of their products. And we need to ensure that every child is taught the skills they need to be safe online.

A recent survey for Barnardo’s of more than 2,300 people revealed that a quarter (25 per cent) of youngsters aged 13-15 said they had communicated with a stranger on social media. This included 27 per cent of girls and 33 per cent of 14 year olds.

The poll results coincided with the release of our Childhoods in a Digital World paper, examining both the challenges and opportunities to children from the rapidly evolving technological world.

This proposal is what we at Barnardo’s have been calling for to help protect vulnerable children and young people. We look forward to working with the Government to ensure children are safe online, in London and beyond.

More thinking on social care

IN RESPONSE to calls from

Age UK for the Government to bring forward proposals for social care following a rise in delayed transfers of care.

Nearly 60 per cent of all delayed transfers of care are actually down to the NHS due to patients waiting for other health services or assessments.

However, no council wants to see anyone stay in hospital for a day longer than necessary.

Councils are doing all they can to try and help people live independently in their communities and reduce demand on hospitals.

But with unprecedented funding cuts since 2010 and social care services facing a £2.3 billion funding gap by 2020, this is becoming increasingly difficult.

That is why the need for the Government to use the Autumn Budget to reform and fully fund social care is urgent.

The extra money for social care announced in the Spring Budget was a step in the right direction, but this was one-off funding and not a long-term solution.

The recent threats by the Government and NHS England to withhold or direct how councils spend this money is not the way to solve the social care crisis. We need to work together to make sure we make the best use of our scarce resources, social care services and care workers.

It is vital they work with councils to prevent people ending up in hospital in the first place and helping those unfortunate to be stuck unnecessarily in a hospital bed get out quickly and safely, back into the community and close to their loved ones.

HE FIRE at Grenfell Tower in Kensington and Chelsea on 14th June this year was shocking and horrific.

Hundreds of people lost family and friends in the tragedy and many people were made homeless - most of the survivors are still waiting to be re-housed.

All of the causes of the fire must be investigated, so that lessons can be learned and the victims and survivors receive justice. In the short term, it is vital that central government and every local council completes urgent fire safety works so that residents across the country can rest assured that their homes are as safe as possible. In Southwark I know that this work is well underway.

I am a member of the Communities and Local Government Select Committee in Parliament, a scrutiny committee which holds to account government ministers.

Two weeks ago I questioned the Secretary of State for Local Government on what additional funding the Tories will provide to ensure that essential fire safety works can be carried out without delay.

I was appalled to hear that the government will provide no grant funding for essential fire safety works post-Grenfell, only letting some councils borrow more money. The Minister was also clear that Councils will be expected to ‘reprioritise’ in order to fund the works.

Government cuts to Southwark’s housing budget will amount to £64 million per year by 2020 – that’s almost £1billion over the 30 year period that councils use for planning the essential repairs and major works needed to keep tenants and leaseholders’ homes in good condition.

This comes on top of the recent report that the number of truly affordable homes at social rents funded by government grant has been slashed by more than 95% since the Lib Dem-Tory coalition took control of our country in 2010.

The previous Labour government invested heavily to bring council homes up to scratch after the huge cuts of the Thatcher and Major Tory governments.

Essential safety measures which are necessary following the Grenfell fire must be undertaken, but they cannot be at the expense of planned works or urgently needed new homes, and I will keep challenging the government to step up and fund this vital work.

The Peckham doctor ‘who ought to be thought of as Britain’s Martin Luther King’

DR HAROLD Moody was a kind and familiar face on the streets of Peckham. He was a caring physician who earned the gratitude of those he treated for free, in the days before the National Health Service.

Nowadays, this unsung hero of black British culture is remembered by those familiar with his work as this country’s Martin Luther King.

Dr Moody, was born in Jamaica, and lived the greater part of his career at his family home and general practice in Queen’s Road, until his death in 1947.

He travelled to Britain in 1904 to study medicine, and he qualified in 1910, aged 28, finishing top of his class at King’s College London.

Had he been alive today, one can imagine Dr Moody might have quickly climbed the ranks of junior doctors at King’s College Hospital, or at Guy’s or St Thomas’. But he was wholly unprepared for the outright rejection he would face, despite his talents, due entirely to the colour of his skin.

As researcher John Graves points out in his 2014 thesis, these were the days when Britain’s black population was in the mere tens of thousands, and concentrated in ports linked to the slave trade, such as London, Bristol, Liverpool and Cardiff. Yet there was strong resentment among white British people, at times mobilised in influential trade unions, who felt their entitlement to jobs was being threatened.

It wasn’t until 1913 – three years later – that Moody took matters into his own hands, and he set up his own general practice at his house in King’s Road (now King’s Grove). In the same year, he took the second bold decision to propose to nurse and colleague Olive Tranter, whom he met at the Royal Eye Hospital. This was at a time when relationships between people of different races were extraordinary, and mixed-race children could be met with open hostility. But the couple went on to have six children.

In the days before a national health service, when any kind of treatment was expensive, Dr Moody would treat poor children for free, and earned a reputation as a good, compassionate, Christian.

And in 1922 he moved the practice and his family of eight to a new home in Queen’s Road, Peckham.

As Dr Moody raised his family and became increasingly mindful of the discrimination going on throughout the country, he set about creating The League of Coloured People (LCP), and became its first president.

The LCP’s first members were similarly middle-class black Londoners, including: black historian C.L.R. James; the first leader of independent Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta; poet Una Marson; West Indies cricketer Leary Marston; and singer, actor and political activist Paul Robeson.

The League’s stated objectives were to “improve relations between races”; “to interest members in the

welfare of coloured peoples in all parts of the world”; “to co-operate and affiliate with organisations sympathetic to coloured people”; and “to provide financial assistance to coloured people in distress as lies within our capacity”.

Dr Moody employed all forms of lobbying of the government, firing off many a persuasive, cordial, yet critical a letter to the then home secretary, and to the secretary of state for colonies, as well as to the Prince of Wales, and The Times of London newspaper.

In 1940, Dr Moody hit out at the BBC, calling on the organisation to publicly apologise after a radio presenter used the word “n***r” during a live broadcast. The incident

set a new precedent in broadcasting standards after The BBC issued a swift apology, accepting full liability for the outburst.

Also during WW2, those lobbying letters were answered, when Dr Moody became a consultant of sorts to numerous government departments about race relations.

In 1944, Dr Moody presented his Charter of Coloured Peoples at the LCP’s annual conference in London.

It demanded “full-self-government” for the colonies and insisted that racial discrimination In Britain be made illegal.

The Charter foreshadowed the resolutions set out in the 1945 Pan-African Congress in Manchester.

Moody’s campaigning for civil

rights was key to influencing the 1965 Race Relations Act – the first legislation in the UK to outlaw discrimination on the "grounds of colour, race, or ethnic or national origins" in public places. And it prompted the creation of The Race Relations Board in 1966, to consider complaints made under the Act. And in the eyes of Southwark’s most prolific black cultural historian, Stephen Bourne, Dr Moody “ought to be thought of as Britain’s Martin Luther King”.

Bourne also wrote in his 2008 biography that Dr Moody and LCP’s work would likely have benefited the generation of black and Caribbean settlers who travelled to work and help rebuild Britain’s cities after the war.

Sadly though, Dr Moody wouldn’t live to see the fruits of his labour. He died aged 64, in 1947, after contracting influenza. In his final months, Moody went on a “speaking and preaching” tour of North American states during a freezing winter. It was reported that the trip exhausted him, and he died at his home in Queen’s Road.

Dr Moody’s work was commemorated in 1995 with an English Heritage Blue Plaque, erected at his former home at 164 Queen’s Road, Peckham.

An information board was also unveiled by Southwark Council outside Dr Moody’s old family home for last year’s Black History month, on October 20. A children’s playground is named after him on the corner between Consort Road and Sturdy Road For this year’s Black History Month, the Local History Library also has a copy of John Graves’ thesis on display, entitled: ‘The Impact and Significance of Dr Harold Moody and the League of Coloured People in its promotion of social reforms in housing and employment for black migrants in London, between 1930s and 1940s.

Transport for London Public Notice ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984

THE A3 GLA ROAD (BOROUGH HIGH STREET, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2017 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable drainage works to take place on Borough High Street.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from entering, exiting or proceeding on Borough High Street (Slip Road) between No. 56 Borough High Street and its junction with Southwark Street.

This Order will also permit all vehicles to turn right from Southwark Bridge Road into Southwark Street.

The Order will be effective between the 1st November 2017 and 1st December 2017 every Sunday to Thursday night 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM (ending Friday mornings 6:00 AM) or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of: (1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes; (2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibition is in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via Borough High Street, London Bridge, King William Street, Cannon Street, Queen Victoria Street, Blackfriars Bridge, Blackfriars Road onto normal route of travel, or via Marshalsea Road, Southwark Bridge Road onto normal route of travel.

IAN ‘LAY Em Out' Lewison failed in his mission to destroy Joe Joyce’s big debut night at The O2 Indigo, North Greenwich last Friday.

The 36-year-old East Dulwichborn heavyweight was involved in an uphill struggle before finally succumbing to an eighth-round stoppage loss.

Trainer Don Charles very wisely threw in the towel at 2:35 of that round after seeing Lewison worn down doggedly by the 2016 Olympic boxing super-heavyweight silver medallist from Putney, who is managed by Bermondsey’s former WBA world heavyweight champion David Haye.

The contest itself headlined the Hayemaker Ringstar Fight Night promotion which was televised exclusively live on Dave TV. “It didn’t go according to plan, it

is what it is,” admitted a dejected Lewison who suffered his fourth professional defeat in seventeen outings.

“The eye totally closed out and I couldn’t see punches coming in.

During the course of the fight my ankle went - it all went wrong.

“We had a strategy which I was working towards. I wasn’t going 100 per cent to plan but it would have been implemented more as the fight went on. But unfortunately the thumb in the eye happened.”

"Believe me, tonight was only 3040 per cent of what I know he has,” he said.

DULWICH HAMLET roared to top spot in the Isthmian League Premier Division table after an emphatic 4-0 win away to Merstham on Tuesday night.

Despite their scintillating recent form, Hamlet had to dig in in the opening period and were almost behind when the ball hit the back of their net in the thirteenth minute, only for an offside flag to rule the goal out.

That seemed to spark the visitors and they took the lead a minute later when Allassani found Tanashe Abrahams at the far post and he spotted Ferguson’s late run from midfield for the opening goal.

It was two just four minutes later.

Ferguson was again involved, this time as creator, as he released Allassani who skipped around opposition goalkeeper Chris Haigh before rolling the ball home.

THERE HAS never been any real question about Steve Morison’s durability and strength and Birmingham were the latest side to have difficulty dealing with it as Millwall won on Saturday after successive defeats.

What has been questioned this season is his goal record as his wait to find the net for the first time since last May’s play-off final goes on.

But Morison could point to performances like Saturday’s as evidence of his worth to the side even when he doesn’t score.

Millwall had chipped and chipped away at Birmingham without really properly testing goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak in the first half. But just two minutes into the second Morison read Marc Roberts’ header, picked up possession ahead of Jonathan Grounds, flicked the ball past Michael Morrison before running into the box. Aiden O’Brien had quickly sensed there was a chance and made a dart towards goal on the blind side of Maxime Colin, who reacted by sticking out a boot to divert Morison’s low cross into his own net.

It was typical Morison, the economy of each touch finally carving out the breakthrough against a big physical,

awkward Birmingham side that also contained a couple of fleet-footed dangers on the break in Che Adams and Isaac Vassell.

Millwall’s best two chances of the opening period had come from long, diagonal free-kicks to the back post.

Morison headed down to Lee Gregory who swivelled to fire wide, before Jake Cooper nodded inside to Aiden O’Brien but he couldn’t keep his flick down.

Morison was successful in eighteen aerial duals, and it amazes how he so often wins headers despite being marked by two players. Blues boss Steve Coterill had instructed Cheikh N’Doye to drop in front of Morison for goal-kicks, but the centre-forward was as effective in the air as he has been this season.

Birmingham knew what they would face in front of almost 15,000 fans at The Den, but Cotterill was disappointed they didn’t deal with the hosts’ direct play.

“The first thing we needed to do was stand up to that long ball, diagonal, straight, aerial bombardment,” Cotterill said. “Backing it up, second balls, we never won enough of those. You have to go through that fight to have the right to play.

“I thought we were just a bit tentative in everything we did in the first half and if you are like that here – a hostile

environment – the way they play they can hurt you with that.

“It’s disappointing, we prepared all week. There has not been any surprises out there on the pitch today. All in all the work we have done I wouldn’t do any different if we played them again next week. We just didn’t get a proper foothold in the game.

“The players in there are disappointed themselves. I didn’t expect that at all, I thought we would be far better at dealing with Millwall’s threats. I said at half-time if we carry on in the same vein 100 per cent we will get beaten today because one of us will make a mistake and they will score a goal.”

That’s exactly what happened, though it was a defensive mis-judgement at the other end that helped Birmingham go closest to opening the scoring before the break. It was Adams and Vassell combining, the former sending the latter running into the box. Cooper went to ground thinking the striker was going to shoot, but Vassell delayed before then fizzing a shot just wide of the far post.

But once Millwall went ahead they surged with confidence. The Lions were direct, but there were also some beautifully subtle pieces of skill.

Gregory killed a long, high ball that dropped over his shoulder right on the touchline before setting up an attack. In the second half Jed Wallace chipped a

ball over the top of Birmingham’s defence that Gregory controlled into his own path with his head, before he set O’Brien up for an effort that went over Kuszczak’s crossbar.

Wallace then crossed for Morison who initially failed to control the ball before he improvised with a half-volley that Kuszczak tipped over the bar.

That was Morison’s last act as Neil Harris sent on Tom Elliott up front.

Almost immediately Gregory invited Elliott to charge down the left wing with a deft pass. Elliott cut inside before firing in a low drive that Kuszczak parried to the edge of the box, to where Ryan Tunnicliffe was following up the play and he shot past the covering Grounds and Kuszczak for his first Lions goal.

Afterwards Harris praised Elliott for his contribution.

“I thought he was outstanding when he came on,” Harris said. “The reason we flogged Steve like we did was because we didn’t have Tom. “With the way we play we don’t always have to have a big man on the pitch, but it certainly helps us.

“When we didn’t have Tom we asked Steve to go and go and go. Steve broke down in the end and it’s vital we keep people fit, especially with a small squad.

“Having Tom fit and on the bench to come on was a real bonus for us.”

WHILE MILLWALL’S confidence at home is sky-high, it’s on the road where they need to start picking up more points to propel themselves into the top half of the table.

There is probably no tougher side to face at the moment if you’re looking to improve results away from home than a trip over the Wales border to face Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds haven’t lost at home in the league this season, and have also picked up some eye-catching results away from Cardiff City Stadium, including at table-topping Wolves and, last week, Middlesbrough.

After that win, manager Neil Warnock admitted the club have readjusted their targets this season.

“We were aiming to be in the top six at the end of October but we're setting our sights higher now,” Warnock said. “I'm too long in the tooth to get carried away, though.

“It’s key that he’s playing and that we have a big man up front so we always have an out ball. That’s our style of football and looking at the game against Birmingham it worked a treat.”

“Him and Gunnarsson were both lastminute jobs. They both failed fitness tests but they should both be available next week.”

Other than long-term injury absentees Shaun Williams and Byron Webster, Harris could also be without forward Fred Onyedinma, who pulled up in training the day before last Saturday’s win over Birmingham..

O’Brien revealed that was one of his jobs as an apprentice coming through at the club before, after he had returned to the club as under-21 boss following the end of his playing career at Southend, Harris used to state O’Brien’s case to Steve Lomas and Ian Holloway for a place in the senior team.

Harris promised O’Brien he would get his chance, and was as good as his word when he took over from Holloway, playing the attacker in each of the last ten games of the 2014-15 season.

“From being with the gaffer in the reserves and not getting a look-in in the first team, he was always telling me to be patient. He used to say, ‘I don’t know why you’re not getting a chance but be patient, I’m showing him videos every day and explaining why you

should be starting’.

“You don’t know what’s around the corner, you just have to be prepared, be focused and keep your head down and it shows that anything can happen.

“Me and the gaffer have a really good relationship - I used to clean his boots.

He was the 21s manager and from then we took a liking to each other. He taught me things on the pitch as well as off the pitch and I thank him for that.

“When he got the job the last ten games of that season he started me in every game, it showed that he believed in me, trusted me and he knows I’m going to give 100 per cent in each game. That’s why he probably plays me every week.”

O’Brien and Harris go back to Cardiff this weekend. The Lions boss enjoyed a short spell with the club in 2004 and, more recently, O’Brien was part of a Republic of Ireland squad that sealed a place in the World Cup qualifying playoffs with a 1-0 win over Wales.

There are similarities between how Martin O’Neill’s side went about their business, and how Millwall might set about getting their first away win in the Championship this season.

STEVE MORISON has shrugged off criticism about his lack of goals this season – saying the only person he has to impress is Neil Harris.

Morison is still waiting to open his 2017-18 Championship account, but was named man of the match by Sky Sports in the 2-0 win over Birmingham in front of the live TV cameras last Saturday.

And Morison insisted he doesn’t pay attention to most of what is said about him.

“People want to talk and find a problem, people want me not to play, people want to retire me, people want Tom [Elliott] to play and all this kind of malarkey. It’s fine, it is what it is,” Morison said.

“Everyone’s going to have their opinion, but I’ve only got to worry about impressing one person and that’s the manager. If he wants to keep picking me people will probably still want to find a problem even if we’re getting results.

“I don’t worry about it. If I worried about what people said about me I’d have stopped playing a hell of a long time ago. I seem to get it quite a lot.

“I love proving people wrong, it’s enjoyable but someone people you can never please and I don’t worry about trying to please them.”

Morison has put himself through the pain barrier this season, playing against Barnsley with a stomach muscle tear when Harris admitted he should have left him out of the side.

Morison acknowledges that in the past he has played when he shouldn’t have.

“One of my biggest regrets when I was at Leeds was not ruling myself out when I wasn’t fit,” he said. “I should have said, ‘no, I’m going to do what I need to do and make sure I’m 100 per cent right to come back’.

“I haven’t done it here. Before Barnsley we were low on numbers, we’d lost Willo [Shaun Williams], Webbie [Byron Webster], Fred [Onyedinma] was struggling. Needs must, we haven’t got the biggest squad in the world and Tom wasn’t even back in training.

“There wasn’t a lot we could do, we made a decision and took a gamble. We thought it might work out and we’d get a result, but we didn’t and then everyone wants to make it a problem afterwards.

“It didn’t cause too much of a bad effect. Obviously I had to miss the Brentford game, which I didn’t want to miss, but I got back Saturday and it worked out okay.”

Millwall can ill-afford to lose any more senior players to injury, with Williams out until the next year and Webster for the season.

Morison is confident that Ryan Tunnicliffe and Jake Cooper can make an impact in the side, even if it will take some time.

Morison admitted it was a “massive blow” to lose Webster to such a serious injury, and explained how the loss of both players disrupts the line of communication through the team.

MILLWALL’S CAPTAIN demonstrated his powers of recovery recently – by returning almost a month early from an injury that was initially expected to keep him out for up to six weeks.

Steve Morison played against Barnsley on September 30 with a tear to a stomach muscle he had picked up early on against Reading in the previous game.

But Morison revealed he wanted to put himself up for selection as Millwall were without Tom Elliott and short of frontline options against the Tykes.

He explained: “I had work done on it and I felt better than I had done in the Reading game. I felt alright for a little bit of the Barnsley game then all of a sudden I was in a lot of pain again.

“If big Tom had been fit then I maybe wouldn’t have played at all, I’d have missed it and started my recovery straight after the Reading game.

“In the end it didn’t work out because we lost the game anyway. We made a decision and if we’d won the game no one would have been talking about anything else.

“It was a grade 2 tear and I was supposed to be four to six weeks out.

“It affected my running, I couldn’t brace in my stomach. It was quite restrictive and I was expected to be out for a longer period but managed to come back in just over two weeks.”

He said: “I spend a hell of a lot of time with Byron. I stay with him when I’m down here and when we go back [north] we go together.

“He’s had a tough couple of weeks, it’s been very boring just icing and icing the injury. He’s a bit happier this week because he’s been able to do some gym work.

“It was a massive blow and in the space of one game we managed to lose near enough the spine of the team from last year.

“It’s going to take time for Ryan to grow into the role that Willo has left. It’s going to take time for Coops as well even though he has been here before.

“Byron used to talk to Willo, Willo used to talk to me and then I’d talk to Gregs. All of a sudden you’ve got no

“The team now needs to grow up and move on and change. Willo will come back and he will have to fight for his place if Tunni keeps playing the way he is.

“That’s what the squad’s about. The players who were sitting on the bench watching it all go well all of a sudden have to step up. It might take them a couple of games to get up and running but they have their chance.”

Millwall head to second-placed Cardiff this weekend, where Morison will be in opposition to the manager who brought him to Leeds.

Neil Warnock was highly complimentary of Morison when he signed him in January 2013, saying:

“Steve meets all the requirements of the striker we've been looking to bring in.

For me, he is a player who has everything. He can score goals from anywhere – whether it’s 25 yards or a tap-in – he has pace, and he has all the attributes you want.”

Although they were together for just a few months before Warnock left the club, the respect also goes the other way.

“The first time I spoke to him was when I got the call to say they wanted me. I went up there and he was everything I expected him to be,” Morison said.

“It didn’t work out for him or me at that time, it was only a few months and he was gone. I didn’t get to work with him for long but when I did I enjoyed it.

He’s a good manager and knows how to get the best out of his players.

“He has his support staff around him to make sure everything is right and people are working on what he wants them to do.

“When it comes to match-day he comes into his own. He motivates and we’ve all seen he doesn’t shy away from telling people if they’re not doing it right.

“His staff do the coaching. He makes sure everything is done how he wants it.

“He’s also got an eye for a player.

They picked up some good players in the summer and they’ve kicked on from last year.

“Every club he’s been to he does the same thing.”

STEVE MORISON is confident he will achieve the target number of games required to trigger a contract extension.

Morison’s current deal expires at the end of this campaign, and he will be close to his 35th birthday at the start of next season.

Morison is well on course to reach the target set out in his contract,

having missed just one of Millwall’s thirteen Championship games so far.

His appearance record since he rejoined the club from Leeds in 2015 is impressive. He played 50 times in all competitions last season and 57 the season before. If he steers clear of injury then an extension to his stay at the club should be a formality.

But Morison joked that if some Lions supporters had their way he would not be at the club past this season.

“If we get to those milestones then we’ll have that conversation,”

Morison said. “If someone wants to talk to me about staying I’ll have to make sure they don’t talk to some of the fans because I won’t be here in that case!

“We have to wait and see. I have a clause in my contract where I have to achieve certain goals and if I do then we’ll talk about a new deal.

“It’s down to the manager and the hierarchy if they want me and I’m fit.

“I’ve just got to keep playing.

There are 30-odd games left and I’d like to think I’m going to play a few more.”

Morison was back from injury and wearing the captain’s armband in the 2-0 win over Birmingham last weekend.

He has been skipper this season with Tony Craig unable to win a place in the side, and he is enjoying the experience of leading the team.

He said: “I just wear it and do my job. If the players need someone to look to or talk to on the pitch or off it then I’m happy to do it.

“I enjoy it, I like being captain here. If I’m captain it means I’m playing so I’m quite happy with that.”

Harris is an admirer of Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock and believes there will be no lack of “passion and desire” on the pitch at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Lions manager Harris played three games on loan at Cardiff in 2004 and said he “absolutely loved” his spell in Wales.

And he is aware that Warnock will have his players fired up this weekend as they could potentially go back to the top of the Championship table with a win.

“He’s a great fellow, passionate about the game and his sides are always battle-hardened and aggressive,” Harris said.

“He gets his players right at it.

“It’s a great challenge for us and one I’m personally looking forward to. I spent some time there as a player on loan and absolutely loved it.

“There’s a real spirit about the club and it’s a good one for us on the back of Birmingham to follow it up with another performance like we had then.

“We’re certainly going to have to compete physically, one-v-one duels are going to be really important all over the park and it’s a game we should thrive off.

“There will be two teams that don’t lack passion and desire on the football pitch.

“I’ve always enjoyed watching Neil Warnock’s teams because they are always right at it. I pride myself on my players having that hunger and desire and wanting to win.

“It’ll be a battle, they’re right near the top of the division because they’ve got quality as well.”
