A GRIEVING son who found his grandparents’ gravestone missing days after his mother’s funeral has said more should have been done to warn him it had been moved.

Dave Nicholls discovered the headstone at his grandfather’s grave – where his grandmother’s ashes were also scattered – had disappeared when he visited

Camberwell New Cemetery on September 19.

The 50-year-old, from Bermondsey, was unaware that the council had been given permission to dig up graves at the cemetery’s One Tree Hill site to allow for a pathway and new graves to be built as it deals with the borough’s burial space shortage.

Police need to keep a presence

T

he borough commander held a public meeting last week to answer questions on proposals to close some of the borough's police station front counters.

Commander Simon Messinger, together with deputy mayor for policing and crime Sophie Linden, heard residents' concerns about the proposals, which it is estimated could save the Met £10m a year.

Deputy mayor Linden herself said at the meeting that 70% of crimes from London are reported over the phone; that only eight per cent of crimes are reported at a police station.

So, on the face of it, perhaps the plan is a no brainer. But one issue that was spoken about at the meeting does make you question whether it should be such an open and shut case - and that is the reassuring factor that a police presence has on a community. Sophie Linden acknowledged the effect such closures could have: "I understand that a police counter closing in the community is like police withdrawing from a community."

This is not a new debate. Some years ago when police were closing other stations, they argued that they would have a better response time to crimes if they operated out of just a few bases. That may have been right, but residents said they felt seeing bobbies on the beat, the police have a visible presence, gave them more reassurance. Southwark Inspector Jim Cole said that developer British Land was looking into providing a police 'facility' as part of its Canada Water Masterplan. So perhaps this is the answer? If the police are compelled to close their own stations’ front counters, perhaps they should seek to find outside companies who could help them establish bases?

We've reported several times recently how people in Rotherhithe have been affected by anti social behaviour, and on the menace of moped riding robbers committing crimes across the borough. That, to us, demonstrates that the police need to keep a presence - just having them in the community may deter criminals and also reassure residents.

More answers on cycle lane needed!

T

he news that TfL is planning a cycle superhighway from Bermondsey to Greenwich is sure to be a divisive one.

Cyclists and motorists are often found to be at odds with each other.

The horrendous number of cyclists dying on our roads is surely a call to action for TfL, and a segregated cycle lane is surely much safer than a road shared by cyclists, cars and lorries.

But what TfL needs to explain is how it will affect traffic on routes such as Jamaica Road, Rotherhithe Roundabout and Lower Road, which are hideously congested every day.

The proposals are only out for consultation, but TfL needs to show all road users that it can create the Superhighway without making the road even more jam-packed than it is.

TfL also couldn't answer whether, how or when roads would be closed for the works.

Surely all of these details are needed before residents can make their minds up?

CAMPAIGNERS HELD a mock trial outside a Bermondsey pub recently saved from being redeveloped into flats.

The Southeast London branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), along with residents and councillors, organised a mock trial, complete with someone dressed as a judge outside the vacant Winnicott in Bermondsey Wall East.

Earlier this year, Milan Babic Architects put forward a planning application on behalf of Hamna Wakaf Ltd. to convert the building into residential use, but it was rejected.

Since then, CAMRA, councillors and residents have launched a campaign to get the pub - formerly known as the Old Justice - listed as an asset of community value.

SE London CAMRA chair Steve Silcock, who helped organise the event on Saturday, said: “The ‘trial' heard evidence from, among others, CAMRA's pub protection officer Neil Pettigrew who highlighted the historic character of the building and its numerous original 1930s interior features.

“Councillor Anood Al-Samerai stressed that in the right hands the building could become a successful community pub.

“Her fellow councillor, Hamish McCallum, added that a 200 signature petition had so far been gathered against the redevelopment indicating the very strong local support for retaining a pub in this location.”

Riverside ward councillor Hamish McCallum added: “We are very grateful to CAMRA in helping us to keep up the pressure to make sure the pub is listed as a community asset and brought back into use as a wellmanaged local community space.

“Special thanks to ‘Judge Julian’ who made such an impassioned judgement about the need for this pub and for allowing local councillors to give our ‘witness statements’ about its importance in our community.”

A spokesperson for Milan Babic Architects said the pub owner did not wish to comment.

Mock trial held to promote ‘asset of community value’ campaign for Bermondsey pub Old Justice

SOUTHWARK HAS officially launched its bid to become London Borough of Culture, which could see it being awarded £1m to spend on the arts.

Two councils will be given the title, one for 2019 and the other for 2020, and given the cash by the Mayor of London.

The council has said it would use the money to invest in a year-long cultural programme, featuring ‘the talents of global superstars’ and local people.

Residents of the borough, which is home to international arts venues like Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Old Vic, are now being called up to support the bid. Southwark has produced a video as part of the campaign.

Cllr Peter John, the leader of the council, said: “To gain the title of London Borough of Culture we will need the backing of all the amazing talent already showcased across the borough. But more than that we will need to uncover the hidden work of unknown artists and inspire people to explore their untapped creativity. Together we can make Southwark London’s Borough of Culture.”

Developer unveils biscuit factory plan

BERMONDSEY: A developer is looking for locals’ feedback on plans to transform a section of the historic Peek Freans Biscuit Factory with 1,350 flats.

Grosvenor Britain & Ireland will be showing off its £500m “masterplan” at a series of public exhibitions.

The exhibitions will be open to the public in Unit H05 at the Clements Road entrance to the Biscuit Factory (SE16 4DG) on: • Thursday 5 October: 4-8pm • Friday 6 October: 2-6pm • Saturday 7 October: 10am-2pm A statement from the company said it hopes to “revitalise the neighbourhood as a thriving economic centre that is physically, socially and economically integrated into Bermondsey”.

It said the flats will be available as “rental homes”, available on “a range of discounted market rents”. They will be a mixture of studio, two and threebedroom properties.

Explosives Act arrest in Camberwell CAMBERWELL: Police were deployed at a house in Monclar Road for four days after the alleged discovery of explosive chemicals.

A 61-year-old man was arrested on September 28, on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. He has been bailed until a date in late October.

A statement from the Met said officers were called to the scene by the London Fire Brigade at 4:50pm.

“There are no reported injuries and no addresses have been evacuated.

The incident is not being treated as terror related,” the Met said.

A crime scene was removed on Monday at 8:45pm.

Law centre argues demolition of bingo hall would impact on elderly ladies EXCLUSIVE

ELDERLY LADIES of minorityethnic backgrounds stand to lose out under plans to demolish the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre and its bingo hall, a legal charity has warned.

Southwark Law Centre has objected to the huge regeneration plans by Delancey Ltd. It argues that Southwark Council hasn’t fully considered the impact it will have on people with “protected characteristics”.

The News understands that the planning application is likely to be decided by the council’s planning committee later this year. If permission is granted, more than 110 businesses in and around the shopping centre would be turfed out.

The SLC’s objection letter said the council and Delancey “[have] not identified with precision the full range of implications on those with protective characteristics or the full risk and extent of any adverse impact.”

Last week, the News spoke to elderly guests at the London Palace bingo, who said they feared for what would become of their social lives if the bingo hall was lost and not replaced.

An Equalities Impact Assessment produced by the council in May said 90 per cent of bingo visitors were aged over 45, and 62 per cent identified as Black/African/Caribbean/Black British descent. It also found that 90 per cent visited at least once per week.

Patrick Duffey, managing director of Palatial Leisure Ltd, said 7,500 people visit his bingo hall per week. And his bowling alley next door attracts 2,500.

“I think that a lot of them feel like they won’t be listened to. Obviously that’s how they feel because there’s going to be huge luxury flats built here, and there will be nothing for them. Nothing for the people that live in this community.”

He added: “My objection to them demolishing this place isn’t about money. Obviously there is a lot of money involved, but what’s at stake is these people’s social lives. The bingo hall is good for all of south London.”

Patrick, whose lease on the property extends to 2025, said he will refuse any offer to buy him out.

In May earlier this year, the council said planning permission would only be considered if Delancey can produce a Business Relocation Strategy.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “Our position has not changed – it is very important that whatever happens on the shopping centre site is a positive improvement for all residents of all ages.

All views and submissions will be taken into account during the planning consultation, and we expect the applicant to have strongly considered and responded to these concerns in their proposals.” Cllr Williams added that the council will still be prepared to seek CPO (compulsory purchase order) powers “if these are necessary to take

Delancey did not comment specifically on the future of the bingo hall or its customers.

But a company spokeswoman said: “Delancey is working in close liaison with Southwark Council to ensure the redevelopment meets the needs of the local and wider community of Elephant and Castle. The proposed relocation strategy is key to this, and factors in many of the issues previously raised by the council’s own analysis of the required standards and legal framework in relation to equalities.”

In addition to building a new shopping centre, Delancey’s plans include three tower blocks (one of them 34-storeys high) with a total of 979 flats. 35 per cent of those homes will be classed as “affordable”, meaning they will be rented at discounts of between fifteen and 80 per cent of market rate. The other 65 per cent of homes would be sold privately.

£25,000 fine after sting operation finds haul of skin lightening products Products in the back of the van

A WALWORTH Road businessman has been fined over £25,000 after 3,000 “dangerous” and illegal skinlightening products were seized from his van.

The huge haul of skin creams were found during a sting and surveillance operation on Zara Hair and Cosmetics, by Southwark Trading Standards.

The firm’s director, Tanveer Ahmed, 46, was sentenced at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on September 29, after pleading guilty. He was made to pay £25,287 in total.

An undercover customer was sold Caro White Lightening Beauty Cream for £14.99 in June 2016.

The test purchase was followed up in April this year, and a surveillance officer saw shop staff fetching the creams from a van for “under the counter” sale.

Trading Standards were granted a warrant to raid Ahmed’s address in Melford Road, East Ham, where the full haul of products were found and seized.

Tests of the Caro cream found it contained hydroquinone, an ingredient banned under EU law due to side effects

The report to the police was made on Wednesday, September 20.

A statement from the Met said: “The victim, aged in her late teens, was attacked by a man.

“Detectives from the Met's Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command (CASO) are investigating.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for communities and safety. said: “This result is a good outcome for our outstanding Trading Standards team and for customer safety. It sends a clear message to other traders that we will investigate and prosecute those who put customers in danger.”

“No arrests have been made.

DEMAND AT Southwark’s foodbanks has surged due to waits of up to three months for people starting on Universal Credit to get their first payments, it has been claimed.

More than 4,000 Southwark residents have joined the Universal Credit system since it was introduced at the London Bridge and Peckham Job Centres in early 2016.

Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance, Fiona Colley, said claimants have “dropped off a cliff” for periods of twelve to thirteen weeks, forcing them into rent arrears. The delays have also cost the council £3.8m in lost rent revenue.

Universal Credit (UC) – which groups six types of benefit into one payment – was touted as the Conservative Party’s big hitting welfare reform after they came to power in 2010.

Peckham’s Pecan foodbank’s executive director Chris Price said the number of

referrals they received rose by seventeen per cent in the year 2016/17, and looks set to have risen by 33 per cent by the end of 2017/18. Offering a snapshot, Chris said that between April and July this year, the number of adults referred “due to benefit changes” went from 88 to 171.

And the number of children referred due to benefit changes from 34 to 95.

Chris told the News: “Single people have become the largest group being referred, it used to be single-parent families. And a change in benefits has dramatically increased as the reason people are coming. Some of the stories we have been hearing from people are really harrowing.”

Apart from in Southwark, UC had only been applicable to single claimants in the rest of the UK. But on Monday, work and pensions secretary David Gauke, announced to the Tory Party Conference that UC will continue to be rolled to all new claimants, such as parents, disabled people, and those fleeing domestic violence. His decision was made despite warnings from prominent Conservative MP, Heidi Allen, who heard evidence

from Cllr Colley that UC’s implementation had been beset by problems in Southwark.

Last Month, during a House of Commons Works and Pensions Select Committee meeting, Cllr Colley told Ms Allen: “We have over 4,000 tenants who have moved over to UC full-service.

“It’s had a range of impacts on the council and on residents. The most significant for us is how it has impacted rent arrears… That has dominated our experience.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said: “[The government] insists on rolling it out, and the biggest group moving onto it will be young families. And all that damage is to come in time for Christmas. London Bridge Job Centre was meant to be the testing ground for this before it goes to the rest of the country. So if the government can’t get it right in Southwark, then there’s a massive problem.”

• Job Seeker’s Allowance • Housing Benefit • Working Tax Credit • Child Tax Credit • Income Support • Employment and Support Allowance It is given to all new benefits claimants, and will be paid monthly.

It does not apply to people who already receive any of the six benefits. Recipients are required to create an online account, with a gateway username and password, in which they can manage their applications and documentation.

Dave Nicholls discovered the headstone at his grandfather’s grave – where his grandmother’s ashes were also scattered – had disappeared when he visited Camberwell New Cemetery on September 19.

The 50-year-old, from Bermondsey, was unaware that the council had been given permission to dig up graves at the cemetery’s One Tree Hill site to allow for a pathway and new graves to be built, as it deals with the borough’s burial space shortage.

He said he had planned to scatter his mother’s ashes with her parents but had to arrange to do so in Watford instead.

“We were just flabbergasted,” said the father of three. “The whole lot of the section where their grave was had been completely decimated.

“They had just put everyone’s personal effects – fencing, teddy bears and flowers – into a big pile and everyone’s gravestones were missing and we didn’t know what was going on.

“I was told there were notices up around the gravesite for eighteen

months and notices in the local papers but I had been there in March, April and May and didn’t see any notices.”

Mr Nicholls said it was a “really bad time” for it to happen since he had just lost his mother.

“This has come as an emotional shock to us all and we are at a loss what to do,” he said.

“My concern is how can they justify putting new bodies on top of old bodies and a lot of the graves they destroyed were war veterans so that hasn’t gone down well. I think more should’ve been done to make people aware.

“The way that they’ve ripped those graves up and the artefacts is heartbreaking; there was no respect.”

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and the Public Realm, said: “We did our best to contact residents and the wider community over a number of years before the work started. We held public consultations, posted notices on site and placed adverts in the Southwark News. Sadly we didn’t have up to date contact details for all the families concerned, but now Mr Nicholls has been in touch, we have been able to arrange the collection of his grandfather’s memorial.

“Our thoughts are with Mr Nicholls and his family and I hope that they can accept our sincere apologies for any distress this matter has caused them.”

TFL HAVE announced proposals for a segregated Cycle Superhighway to run through Tooley Street and Jamaica Road.

The planned transformation of the A200 would create a 2.5-mile segregated cycle link between Tower Bridge and Greenwich, running through Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Deptford.

It also includes plans for a redesign of Rotherhithe Roundabout, five new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings, and upgrades to more than 20 existing pedestrian crossings.

There will also be changes to some bus stop layouts and locations, including new bus stop bypasses for cyclists.

Plans for the section on Lower Road, which will incorporate the regeneration planned for Canada Water, will be consulted on next year.

The project, nicknamed CS4, is due to begin late next year and would cost £55million. The News asked TfL how long the work is likely to take and if sections of the route will be blocked off to motorists or pedestrians and was told that they could not yet say.

A second consultation, due later this year, will also seek feedback on proposals to include Lower Road in the route.

Simon Dyer, of F A Albin & Sons funeral directors, near Rotherhithe Roundabout, said traffic in the area was already bad and that he thought the cycle superhighway should be built elsewhere.

“What they need to do is improve the system now and they shouldn’t be clogging up the road,” he said.

“I will do everything I can to stop them because I don’t want it. It’s just crazy; it doesn’t need to come through this way.

Pop-up restaurant to serve glow in the dark food to celebrate Day of the Dead

GLOW IN the dark tacos will be served up at a Bermondsey bar to celebrate Day of the Dead.

LOSTACOS will have a pop-up at Doodle Bar, in Druid Street, to mark the spooky occasion on October 22 and 29.

Guests will be greeted with mezcal cocktails, including a take on the paloma and the pensador mezcal, before the evening kicks off with a screening of zombie comedy Juan of the Dead.

During the evening, waiters will hand out LOSTACOS’ take on Mexico’s El Pastor (marinated, spiced and slowroasted grilled pork, salsa verde, fresh coriander, house-soured cream), and Calamari Tacos (lightly-fried calamari, fennel and orange slaw, house-soured cream, chilli).

Even the tortillas, handmade on-site, will contribute to the supernatural setting, incorporating ghostly glow-in-the-dark edible elements.

To round the night off, there will be live blues music performed by Canadian band Whitebrow.

LOSTACOS pop-up will be held at Doodle Bar on October 22 and 29 from 2-5pm. Tickets cost £25.

DULWICH HAMLET is letting fans pay what they like at this Saturday’s game, and donating all profit from the gate to charity.

A bumper crowd is expected at the Bostik League Premier Division clash with Needham Market at Champion Hill.

The club is taking part in the ‘pay what you like’ initiative as part of Non League Day. There will be no obligation to pay the usual admission price, but the more each fan pays, the more the club can donate to charity.

The two charities which will benefit from the day will be Peckham’s Copleston Centre, Hamlet’s official charity partner for the season, and Brixton-based mental health charity Lambeth & Southwark MIND. Chair of the Dulwich Hamlet Football Club Committee Liam Hickey said: "Throwing open the gates, so to speak, is always a huge gamble, as we still have to cover the costs of staging the game and covering all matchday expenses

first. But in the past our fans have always been understanding and generous enough to make sure we give good four figure donations to whoever we work with on the day. " He added: "It's a great way to invite your friends and neighbours along to experience Champion Hill.

Even if the football isn't for them they still have the excuse of supporting good causes. But I know that once they're here, no matter how sceptical they might be about non-league, they'll love it and come back!"

THOUSANDS OF people of all ages and races are set to march through London united against extremism, in a demonstration organised by football fans.

The march has been organised by the FLA (Football Lads’Alliance), which was formed in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack on June 3.

The group’s first march took place three weeks after the attack and attracted thousands.

Everyone, including children, is invited to take part in the next march this Saturday, October 7.

Phil Campion, a former SAS soldier, will speak at the event as well as Mohan Singh, from the Sikh Awareness Society, and John Meighan, who set up the FLA. The Veterans Against Terrorism group is also expected to be there on the day.

Millwall fan Keith Kerwick, who set up the FLA London/ South East Facebook group, said about 70,000

people had confirmed they would be taking part this weekend.

“We are doing it for the right reasons,” said the 32-year-old, originally from Bermondsey. “We are against all extremism: it’s not just Islamic extremist groups.

THE FIRST flutterings of a flag campaign on the Old Kent Road have begun in protest against the possible edging out of businesses in the area.

Two signal flags - usually used by sailors - reading out the message ‘We are not nothing’ were hoisted up outside the Kaymet aluminium tray factory and the Livesey Exchange earlier this month.

Mark Brearley, who runs the Kaymet factory, initiated the campaign after coming across the story of the 1969 Edgingtons flag protest on the Old Kent Road.

Just before being pushed aside to make way for the Bricklayers Arms flyover in 1969, flag makers John Edgingtons displayed maritime signal flags reading: “Am coming down.

Making way for flyover” Inspired by this action, Mark Brearley and other members of the Vital Old Kent Road business association decided to create their own signal flags. They hope that the campaign will highlight the plight of local businesses in light of plans for 25,000 new homes in the area.

Mark said: “These flags are a cry for help from a vibrant part of London, a message from the people and economy of the Old Kent Road. Our local authority has signalled their indifference to the thriving economy of our area, made clear their desire to see us replaced with giant housing developments.”

Many of the businesses in the area are earmarked for clearance to make way for the housebuilding plans proposed by the Greater London Authority and Southwark Council.

The businesses worry that the emphasis on housing means they will face relocation, as the owners of the buildings they are tenants in may turn them into more profitable flats.

“Developers and the council may have vast resources, but we have flags and a supportive public. Perhaps if

enough flutters are raised then a dialogue will commence and better plans will be made,” said Mark.

Alasdair Flint, proprietor of Flints Theatrical Chandlers on Queen’s Row, gave advice on the signal flags and got the slogan ‘We are not nothing’ down to two flags.

“To say ‘We are not nothing’ (spelt out letter by letter) uses too many repeat letters so you would run out of substitute flags. However if you fly a ‘0’ (nadazero) flag with the ‘N’ under it means ‘read the significance of the preceding message in the negative’ or ‘Not nothing!’,” Alasdair said.

Members of Vital Old Kent Road expect more flags to be installed above businesses on Latona Road, Hatcham Road and Verney Road over the next few months. One business has even asked for the flag graphic to be displayed on the side of their vans to help get the message out.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: “The Old Kent Road is a key part of our plan to tackle the housing crisis head on by building new homes of all kinds that Londoners so desperately need, we also want local businesses to benefit from the regeneration of the area.

“We are consulting on building 20,000 new homes, including affordable homes, and an increase of 5,000 local jobs. We will do this by encouraging mixed use developments where there is currently industrial land, this will include new business space as well as new homes, new public parks, new schools and two new tube stations. We are working closely with the local businesses to make sure that as many as possible can benefit from the changes that will happen.

“As part of this we are already developing a business support package and we have already stated in the draft area action plan that we will be paying special attention to the unique and wide-ranging creative businesses that have made the Old Kent Road their home.”

AN ‘INSECT mansion’ in the shape of Tower Bridge has taken pride of place at the Bosco Centre in Bermondsey.

The wooden structure will provide a nesting place for insects and give children the opportunity to study the creatures’ ecosystems.

The youngsters who crafted the insect mansion as part of the Construction Youth training scheme presented it to the

school last Thursday, September 28.

Thirteen young people, including five from Southwark, are working towards sitting a test for their CSCS (construction skills certification scheme) card which will allow them to work on construction sites. Some of those taken on by Construction Youth have faced difficulties in their lives or have turned away from mainstream education.

“Some people would class them as hard to reach but to us they are magnificent; they are grafters and they just want to work and be independent,”

said Wendy Heller, training, development and curriculum manager at Construction Youth.

“As young builders, this is the start of their legacy; I am a carpenter and drive around here thinking ‘I built that’.”

Milton Largor, from Bermondsey, is now looking forward to an apprenticeship in construction. “I’ve learned to have a positive attitude towards work; they [Construction Youth] have helped me with that,” said the eighteen-year-old.

“I’ve always had an interest in

construction since I was little; I just think it’s great to be part of something that big and making the world a better future.”

Seventeen-year-old Joe James, from Rotherhithe, said he had been interested in construction for a while but had discovered his dream to become a carpenter. “No matter what your background is, if you have a history of bad experience the construction industry will still give you a chance; you just need to show that you are willing and that you are going to work hard for the company,” he said.

Darren Coghlan has been principal at the Bosco Centre for eighteen months, where vocational courses such as business, IT, admin, childcare, and youth work are taught, as well as maths and English. “We work with the local youth to get them into sustained employment,” he said. “I do think there’s a need for that and I think we are very local and able to meet the needs of local young people.”

RESIDENTS VOICED concerns over proposals to close police front counters during a meeting with officers at City Hall.

The Met Police launched a public consultation asking people for their views on the closure of police front counters – which is estimated to save the force £10million each year.

Police say many of London’s front counters are underused and that there will still be at least one 24-hour front counter in each borough.

Southwark Borough Commander Simon Messinger, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Sophie Linden and other officers from the borough answered residents’ questions during a meeting at City Hall on September 28.

Mr Messinger told those gathered that the money saved from closing the counters would go into funding things like tablets which would allow officers to remain out on the beat rather than returning to police stations.

It could also fund body-warn cameras and equipment for police cars.

“We will look at making the 101 service better and reporting crime online rather than people having to come into a police station which is probably the slowest way of doing it,” said Mr Messinger.

He added that dedicated ward

officer hubs would act as a base for officers to get into their kit and be out in their ward as soon as possible.

When asked why developers do not provide a police facility when bringing more people into the area, Inspector Jim Cole of Southwark police said British Land was looking to do this as part of the Canada Water Masterplan.

One person brought up the fact that it is difficult for residents to report crime online in places such as Rotherhithe where there are problems with broadband speeds.

Another said they felt safe with police around and that they would like to see reinvestment in crime prevention and education.

Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, told residents: “70 per cent of crimes from London are reported over the telephone.

“Across London, only eight per cent of crimes are actually reported by people going into police stations and that’s why we need to look hard at managing savings.

“I understand that a police counter closing in the community is like police withdrawing from a community.”

Police officer injured on bike

BERMONDSEY: An officer on a police motorbike was taken to hospital last week after being involved in a collision with a car.

London Ambulance Service and the fire brigade were called to the incident at the junction of Long Lane and Wild’s Rents, SE1, at about 9.30am on Thursday, September 28.

A male officer riding a police motorbike was taken to a south London hospital.

His injuries, and those of the motorist, were not thought to be life changing or threatening.

‘METAL BOX gardens’ have sprung up in Bankside as part of a project encouraging people to walk through quieter routes with cleaner air.

Better Bankside, the not-for-profit Business Improvement District, has launched the first phase of its Clean Air Mini Neighbourhood project. As part of phase one of the project, specially commissioned planted skips were installed in America Street.

Kings College London is working with the project team to evaluate how successful the project is in reducing peoples’ exposure to air pollution.

The metal box gardens are situated close to the Metal Box Factory, an old Victorian warehouse which used to make decorative tin boxes and is now home to more than 100 small businesses and restaurants.

Phase two of the project will focus on transforming the historic Keppel Row alleyway into a verdant pedestrian thoroughfare linking Southwark Bridge Road and Great Guildford Street.

The firm says the roof will “remove the existing impact of seasonality and enable to use of the space throughout the year” and reduce the impact of noise for local residents.

The plans were designed by Kennedy Woods Architecture, who are also based in the Bussey Building.

Council Leader defends social housing policy after Corbyn calls for rethink

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL Leader Peter John has defended his authority’s policy over social housing, in response to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s party conference speech - triggering criticism from local activists.

Last week, Cllr John was one of a few senior figures in Labour-run London councils who issued direct responses to Corbyn’s speech on September 27.

Corbyn told his audience in Brighton he believed too many council regeneration schemes amounted to “forced gentrification and social cleansing”.

On Friday, a statement from Cllr John published on Southwark Labour’s website, said: “Jeremy also set out the need for ballots for any new estate regeneration and re-provision of existing council homes…

“It is already our policy in Southwark to only consider any new estate regeneration if it leads to an increase in the amount of council homes on the site.”

But Jerry Flynn of the 35% Campaign offered the Aylesbury, Wood Dene, and Heygate Estates as examples where regeneration will mean drastic reductions in council housing.

Planning documents show the Wood Dene Estate, which held 323 social-rent homes before it was demolished in 2006 (when the Liberal Democrats controlled the council), will be replaced by an estate with 54 social-rent flats, 63 sharedownership flats, and 216 to be sold privately by new landlord Notting Hill.

At the Aylesbury, planning documents from 2015 show there will be a net loss of over 700 social-rent homes. Overall, the 2,700-home estate will be replaced with 3,600 homes. They show 37.5 per cent of those will be available at social rent, 12.5 per cent will be shared-ownership and shared-equity, and the other 50 per cent will be sold privately by Notting Hill.

The Heygate Estate (once 1,194 homes) has been demolished, and developer Lend Lease is in the process of building 2,500 homes – 550 of which will be on “affordable rents”.

NEW MILL Street Surgery held a ‘collect and protect’ cake sale to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and encourage patients to have the annual flu jab.

Macmillan Cancer Support holds the World’s Biggest Coffee morning event every year on September, 29 to raise funds for people affected by cancer.

Teri Johnson, 55, a receptionist at the Bermondsey practice, said it was the perfect time of year to give patients over

65 an added incentive to get vaccinated.

In exchange for a small donation, patients had a full table of sweet treats to choose from, including home-made and donated cakes. The team hope that their extra sweetener has increased uptake of the jab and raised funds for the charity.

“All our families have been affected by cancer. We’ve all either lost someone or know someone dealing with it”, said Teri.

“Lots of people have lived here all their lives and there are older people who live alone too. Having a local surgery and holding events helps us look after the community.”

Jerry, a former Heygate estate tenant, said: “If this is a serious change of heart, then we welcome it. The best test of that would be to halt the Aylesbury Estate regeneration.

“But I think the reason Peter John feels comfortable saying this is that there are no more big regeneration projects in the pipeline, besides those that already have planning permission.”

He said Southwark and other Labourrun London councils should “fall in line” with Corbyn’s pledges: namely that residents should be offered a ballot on plans to regenerate their estates.

Heygate Estate residents were denied a ballot on regeneration in 2003 by the then Liberal Democrat-run council. A ballot was also held at the Aylesbury Estate in 2001, whilst Labour had control, in which residents gave a resounding “no” to proposals for the estate to be sold to Horizon housing group.

Defending his party’s record on council housing, Cllr Williams said: “Two years ago we agreed that we would only ever consider redeveloping existing council homes if it led to an increase in the amount of council homes on that site. We have put this into practice with an increase in the number of council homes on the Abbeyfield Estate in Rotherhithe where the previous Lib-Dem/Tory council had planned to sell off Maydew House, instead our plan will see the number of council homes increase by 46, with existing homes being refurbished, and at other smaller sites like Seavington House, where eight poor quality council bedsits will be replaced with 36 high quality council homes including family homes.

Affordable housing audit will go back to 2010

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has said its first annual audit of affordable housing deals with developers will reach back to 2010, in a victory for campaigners.

Last year Southwark was heavily criticised by a government ombudsman for failing to monitor whether developers were providing affordable housing, promised in exchange for planning permission.

The ombudsman took action after receiving findings of a wide-ranging investigation by the 35% Campaign.

Their evidence gave dozens of examples where property firms, and even housing associations, were allegedly charging tenants above rates that they had agreed with the council, or selling properties that were intended for tenants on low incomes.

Now, Southwark Council has told the News that its first audit will look right back to 2010, when the current Labour administration took office. It will look at 709 separate affordable housing agreements, applicable to 3,256 homes.

The list is due to be completed during making it difficult for councils to build and retain council homes: the Lib DemTory coalition [government] slashed the grants for new affordable homes and increased the discount for Right to Buy which has led to more council homes being lost.

“Labour nationally has set out

Following the potential need for further investigation, the audit will be published by March/April 2018.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “Increasing the amount of affordable housing in Southwark is one of our highest priorities and we take enforcing Section 106 agreements with developers incredibly seriously.”

UK councils have the power to force property firms to provide affordable housing using Section 106 agreements (of the 1990 Town & Country Planning Act). Cllr Williams added: “The council has a strong record in securing new affordable housing, and if we suspect that affordable homes have not been delivered as consented then we take action.

“Recently we have had two successful enforcement cases (Jam factory and The Signal building), where we recovered the affordable housing the developers were obliged to provide. We are currently carrying out an audit of affordable housing which will complete soon, and will set up a robust system to check future schemes so should this happen again we can again take action.”

A MAN has been jailed for ten years for sexually abusing a young girl in the 1990s.

Carl Johnson, (pictured) of Bowden Drive, Dulwich, was found guilty at Kingston Crown Court on August 25 of eight counts of indecent assault after a five-day trial.

The 53-year-old was sentenced at the same court last Thursday (September 28) to ten years in prison.

All offences were committed against the victim between

1991 and 1995, when the female victim was between the ages of thirteen and fifteen.

Johnson used his position as a member of the community at a Battersea church to groom the young victim.

This grooming eventually progressed to multiple sexual offences over a substantial period.

In 2014 the victim came forward and told police about the abuse and an immediate investigation began.

DS Amanda Kearsley, of the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command, said: "Johnson is a predatory

offender who deliberately targeted a vulnerable child.

“Johnson was part of the same church community as the victim and he should have been there to provide support; instead he groomed her before committing offences over a prolonged period.

“This has been a long and emotional process for the complainant.

“I would like to praise her courage and commitment to making sure Johnson was convicted.

“She has ensured he is no longer a risk to other young people."

Ultra-fast WiFi hotspots are coming to Southwark’s streets

STREET PAYPHONES across Southwark will be transformed into ultra-fast WiFi hotspots under a huge shake up by BT.

The new InLinkUK service will replace traditional payphones with street units offering Wi-Fi speeds of up to one gigabit per second, the fastest available in the UK, and free UK landline and mobile phone calls.

InLinkUK’s digital display will also show real-time information such as tube services updates, weather forecasts and community news.

Passers-by will also benefit from

charging stations.

More than 100 InLinks, described by BT as the ‘next-generation phone box’ will be installed across the borough.

They will be funded by advertising revenue.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark (pictured), said: “I’m thrilled local people will be able to benefit from InLinkUK from BT. They’ll be able to see real-time information such as travel updates and weather as they go about their business, but this is a game-changer in terms of helping people who may not have the internet at home to access more services online, and make calls.

Sainsbury’s Victorian rival in Dulwich gets Grade II listed status

A LATE nineteenth-century grocery store opened by Sainsbury’s main rival has been given Grade II listed status.

The shop front and ground floor interior of the former David Greig store, in Dulwich, has been listed by Historic England for its surviving features such as decorative tiles made specifically for the grocery chain.

The store at 65 Lordship Lane, which has since been turned into a restaurant, still features tell-tale signs of its earlier life, such as the chain’s thistle logo above the shop front windows and a tiled black and white floor displaying the words ‘David Greig’.

David Greig opened his first shop in 1870 at 54-58 Atlantic Road, Brixton.

At the time, the Greig grocery chain was a rival to Sainsbury's, which opened its first grocery shop in Holborn, one year earlier.

The entrepreneurs were initially friends, but rivalry developed between the two families.

The stores were designed to bring together the majority of staple requirements into one single place to

save customers time.

They were finished in glazed ceramic tiles, made by H&R Johnson of Stokeon-Trent, with the chain’s thistle logo – in reference to the Greig family’s Scottish heritage.

By the late 1960s there were more than 220 Greig shops across the south of England but the company was sold in 1972.

The former David Greig shop at 65 Lordship Lane is situated on the ground floor of a building which dates from the later nineteenth century.

The upper floors of the building are not listed.

The external shop sign with gold leaf letters has been relocated inside, and the serving counter has been removed.

The ground floor was turned into a restaurant, with the shop floor acting as a dining room and the area behind the former payment booth fitted out as a kitchen and toilets.

It was most recently home to French restaurant Le Chardon (The Thistle).

The main shop has marble shelves at waist and head height, which run the length of the walls.

Pregnancy naturally weakens the body’s immune system and as flu can cause serious complications

for you and your baby, pregnant women who get the flu may be less able to fight off infections, increasing the risk of becoming ill.

The flu jab is the safest way to protect you and your baby against flu and you can have it at any stage of pregnancy, however fit and healthy you might feel.

Flooding: Good News / Bad News

OOD NEWS: A few years ago, I heard Southwark council’s new flood protection officer, John Kissi, tell Camberwell Community Council, that the Wells Way Triangle, where I live, was Southwark’s second most prone area to surface flooding from extreme rainfall events.

These have already increased due to the climate emergency. I asked him to speak to our residents’ association and this led to our setting up a flood protection group. Mr Kissi worked with us and developed proposals to build a storm-water storage tank under the school playground.

This would hold storm flood-water and stop it from flooding our homes.

He raised funds from various agencies and it is now being built and scheduled to be operational by March.

Our residents are very grateful to Mr Kissi for his efforts to help protect our homes.

BAD NEWS: One way to reduce Southwark’s flooding is to ensure plenty of trees on the hills surrounding the borough and the Thames riverbasin. When asked what councillors were doing about the need to urgently re-wood the naked hills surrounding the Thames basin, the answer was nothing. Even on hills that the Borough itself owns, it is felling the woods that had grown up in the Camberwell Old & New Cemeteries and the Honor Oak Nature Corridor. It is doing this to create new graves.

Cllr Peter John, the “Southwark Bulldozer”, rammed this decision through in June, despite the public consultation rejecting the tree bulldozing by an overwhelming 86%.

The clearing of these woods is causing millions more litres of water to flow down into the low-lying areas of the Borough, to the north of the chopped down woods.

HELP MAKE BAD NEWS INTO GOOD: Every 100 trees captures over a million litres of water/year. Cllr John has already chopped down 2 acres but brave campaigners are trying to save 13 more acres of nature conservation from bring bulldozed.

He had one chance in Government and blew it - he supported budgets that axed Southwark police officers and PCSOs. He was Minister for Justice and yet prosecutions have not risen to get justice for the families affected by knife crime. His speech is an example of hypocrisy - I used to think much better of Simon Hughes.

It's time to apologise

I’M SURE many of us are disappointed that Southwark’s Labour Party have not responded to Neil Evans’ letter (14th Sept) about his conversation with a Labour activist on his doorstep. I can understand why Southwark Labour want to deny our MP’s commitment to The Garden Bridge project, but there is a bigger issue here.

We can be sure the local Labour party knows which one of their activists spoke to Mr Evans, (they probably noted down the details of that conversation). Southwark Labour should release those details, and ask their activist to make a public apology for trying to mislead Mr Evans.

If Southwark’s Labour party refuse to tell us who spoke to Mr Evans on the 9th September, there is a likelihood that local people will dismiss every word of every single Labour activist in Southwark. To reclaim any credibility, Labour must let us know the name of the man who spoke to Mr Evans. Southwark Labour must ask their activist to

I’m confused about mayoral candidate I AM a little confused regarding Lewisham Labour party, and their choice to be their candidate, ‘Mayoral hopeful has pledged no new CPO on Millwall’, Southwark News, September 28, 2017 .

Firstly, has there been any news of the Inquiry into the botched CPO on Millwall FC, Lewisham Council and the developers they were going to use? The Cllr the party has chosen, Cllr Damien Egan, was the cabinet member responsible for the CPO, and choosing the developers. I do not understand that he was happy to let developers build 2,400 flats in Bermondsey, with about only about 12 flats so called affordable, and zero social housing! My question now is, is this now the policy that Lewisham Labour party are happy with?

A RECENT survey by Independent Age, the older people’s charity, revealed that one third (33%) of drivers aged 70 and over in London say they would feel like they’d lost part of their identity if they were not able to drive and for more than four in five (84%) older drivers it would mean a loss of independence.

The survey was commissioned to promote our new, free advice guide, Behind the Wheel: Tips for safe and confident driving in later life. The guide is full of tips to help support older drivers, and provides

information on alternatives if they decide to stop driving. It is accompanied by online information for the families of older drivers around how to start difficult conversations about driving.

The survey showed that, for many older people in London, being able to drive means so much more than just being able to get out-andabout. Whether it’s keeping in touch with family and friends or continuing to do their shopping, driving can help maintain a sense of independence, and identity too.

There are almost five million people over the age of 70 who hold licences in the UK, with more than 100,000 of those over the age of 90. There are many benefits to continuing to drive into older age and, as long as they remain safe, older people should be able to continue driving for as long as they want to. It’s also vital that people who are no longer able to drive have access to information on the various options available for getting around without a car.

Independent Age is one of the two charities who provided contributors for ITV’s 100-year-old Driving School, which airs at 9pm on Tuesdays from 12th-26th September. Independent Age representatives attended the three regional hubs to talk to older drivers and their families participating in the programme about their experiences of driving, in research for the Behind the Wheel advice guide.

A recent example of this is the proposal set out in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy for a cycle superhighway from Tower Bridge to Greenwich. Such a scheme would help to make cycling easier and safer for residents.

I am a big fan of the segregated cycle lanes having spent part of my undergraduate degree living and studying in the small Dutch town of Utrecht. I fondly remember the welcome address given to all international students, in which we were told we needed to buy “a bicycle and a really good lock ASAP!” By the end of my second week I was whizzing around the streets of Utrecht like the ultimate pro.

There is high demand and interest in cycling in London. However, conversations with local people have revealed that some still view cycling as dangerous. It is a fear I completely understand, particularly having witnessed a number of incidents involving cyclists, such as a collision with a car.

Sadly, several serious and fatal collisions involving cyclists have occurred on some of the busy roads and junctions in Southwark. This clearly demonstrates the case for making cycling on London’s roads safer.

If we are to really tackle the issue of cleaning up the dirty air and easing congestion on our roads, we need more people cycling and walking. This can only work if there are safe, accessible routes linking key cycling and walking routes to major transport hubs such as train, tube and bus stations.

I work in London Bridge and I cannot recall the last time I was not caught up in some form of traffic jam approaching Tooley Street. So, I greatly welcome the Mayor’s news that he will be consulting on plans for a Cycle Superhighway 4 route which will provide more than 4 kilometres of a new two-way segregated cycle lane from Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, Evelyn Street and Creek Street. This new route will help to address the congestion in the area and the growing demand for cycling in our part of South London along the busy A200 from Tower Bridge. We are also getting the added bonus of an upgrade of over 20 existing road crossings and the redesign of the Rotherhithe roundabout to giving priority to buses. I recently visited Sands Film Studio and instead of walking the short distance to the venue from Canada Water underground station, I took the C10 bus, only to get caught in the traffic leading up to the roundabout!

Transport for London (TfL) will be consulting on these plans and I would encourage all local residents, community groups and businesses to share their views on this new cycle route. The details are available on the TfL website via www.tfl.gov.uk/cs4. There will be a range of public consultation events and a hard copy of the consultation plan will be available at Canada Water Library and Blue Anchor Library.

Based around the idea of how far would you go for 6 million dollars Perhaps as far as transporting the dead body of your distant uncle to Monte Carlo for the holiday he had always dreamt of? This is the choice our lead Harry Witherspoon (played

by Tom Elliot Reade) a shy shoe salesman is faced with. Sure enough it is decided that 6 million is most definitely worth it and thus begins the mad-cap jolly to the French Riviera, corpse in tow. Throw in a devoted, no-nonsense Brooklyn dog home representative and the highly strung, legally blind scorned lover of our dearly deceased and her timid,

nervous optometrist brother, all of whom take pursuit for the money, and the result is an absurd continental caper.

The show has a strong start with hopes of a Weekend at Bernie’s/John Waters mash-up, yet the plot lost some momentum and pace for me around the middle of the first half; finding some of the slower musical numbers somewhat forgettable. That’s not to say the production as a whole isn’t enjoyable, there is a lot to like here.

The tunes with the whole company pop with precise choreography and vocal performances from all, as well as the almost vaudevillian caricatures spattered through the show. Lucky Stiff is also very funny on the whole, producing some well earned laughs.

The set is kept simple and to great effect, utilising only door-frames to conjure each location, whether it be East Grinstead or New Jersey the company moves with ease around what is a relatively small set-up. The

whole cast gives some stomping performances throughout and with two strong leads in Elliot Reade and Natasha Hoeberigs as Annabel Glick (the aforementioned dog home representative) it is even more impressive that Tom Keeling and Natalie Moore-Williams brothersister duo roles of Vincent Di Ruzzio and Rita La Porter respectively are the stand outs. Both are outrageous, both are hilarious.

The characters are chalk and cheese and are performed to such extreme, garish levels that the giggling amongst the audience becomes infectious. In all a daft, light-hearted production, just in time to combat those encroaching dark wintry nights.

The beast of Brockley I

never really enjoyed Frankenstein, the book by Mary Shelley; I struggled with the character of Dr Frankenstein, finding him a bit wet. So I was interested to see if this intriguing working of the classic horror would change my mind. This version by Ross McGregor has the novel feature of intertwining the story of Mary Shelley's herself in to the play, in parallel with the original narrative. And I must say that it worked excellently, writes Matt Baker.

Sharing the world of the author, and her trials and tribulations, made me feel more attached to the characters in the original piece. The direction needed to balance the different narratives in the play was outstanding and showed real quality from Ross McGregor.

Despite so much going on it never felt lost or overwhelmed.

The depiction of the monster was spot on and didn't in anyway descend in to cliché, whilst at the same time keeping a marvellous gothic touch. There was, too, a nice equilibrium between pathos

and menace that gave real depth to the performance. As the play closed with its tragic end the audience gave generous applause and there was a real sense of appreciation for a great night.

Definitely worth a trip down to Brockley for.

ane Eyre began so frantically I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep abreast of all the comings and goings. When my companion asked if it was a musical I replied ‘I hope not!’ Once the pace had calmed down I was immersed in a beautiful production. The minimal set – a little like an adventure playground - became the hardy background for the three-hour journey through Jane’s life, matching the starkness and adversities she encountered along the way, writes Susan Hallissey.

‘Bertha’s’ presence is felt by the haunting melodies of Melanie Marshall.

I particularly liked the musical trio’s part as they watched Jane’s sorrowful beginnings. Yep! A musical trio! The use of lighting and actors playing multiple parts added to Jane’s bleak beginnings.

Jane joyless younger life was played out poignantly and her defiance in the face of cruelty was relentless. Jane’s spirit and gumption played well by Nadia Clifford. Once she met Mrs Fairfax (Lynda Rooke) I wanted to cry with joy! Jane was being given a room and food - a simple act of human kindness!

The Six Million Dollar show J ucky Stiff is the new musical farce to hit The Union Theatre. Originally written in 1988 and based on Michael Butterworth’s novel ‘The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo’, Lucky Stiff has previously received an offBroadway production as well as the West End treatment, writes Rosie O’Connell.

Mr Rochester (Tim Delap) was dashing and broody. It was interesting seeing the audience’s response at the ‘banter’ between Rochester and Jane.

Witty and honest remarks seemed to bounce around the auditorium causing unexpected laughter.

The use of two modern day songs jarred slightly in this captivating performance…if that’s all I’ve got to complain about in three hours of theatre it’s good going!

It was magical, forceful, with a well deserved standing ovation which all the cast were worthy of in this tight and unique production of Jane Eyre. Oh, and not many dry eyes on the way out!!

(Including mine!)

This production really made me think of Jane’s character and the strength within her and the author rather than that of the love story – Jane Eyre really is a modern heroine who refuses to be controlled and constrained.

outhwark in its industrial heyday was a Mecca for leather making, a bastion for brewing, the gateway to the rest of England, and home that welcomed all manner of wrong’uns and scoundrels.

That’s the picture painted in Southwark Pubs, a new book by historian and BBC Radio London regular, Johnny Homer.

The 43-year-old talks us through his favourites from the 43 old boozers in the book, which have stood their ground for centuries.

Our first stop is The George Inn, at no. 77 Borough High Street. “Beside the Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street, the George is probably the most famous pub in the world. Tourists flock there, and order something typically British like a fish and chips,” Johnny told the News.

Though best known by today’s drinkers for its distinctive court yard, The George was once a stables, and is London’s “last surviving galleried coaching inn,” Johnny writes. And whilst today the house itself only includes the right-hand side, it used to go all the way around all three sides.

Until 1750, London Bridge was the only crossing on the Thames. If you were from Kent or Surrey it was the only way to get north.

Johnny said: “This area became like a holding pen, because the bridge closed at night. People would lodge at pubs like The George and taverns along Borough High Street. It was also a place for all the brothels, dog fights, bear baiting, and theatre.” He said the south side of the river enjoyed its hedonism because it was outside the jurisdiction of the City of London, where such things were forbidden.

Other little-known facts about the George is that it was once owned by Guy’s Hospital, who sold it to Northern Rail to use as a goods depot.

Since 1937 it has been owned by the National Trust.

At no. 231 Long Lane, Simon the Tanner may not boast any notorious tales of its own, but Johnny says it’s worthy of note because of its place in the centre of old Bermondsey, which has radically transformed around it.

Bermondsey was best known for its leather making. Johnny makes this point as he pauses to point out that the name of the pub we are sat having a drink in – the Pommelers Rest in Tower Bridge Road – which refers to an old way of saying to “pummel” leather. And he writes that by the end of the eighteenth century, one third of all of Britain’s leather was produced in and around Bermondsey Street.

Old Simon would have witnessed it all, having opened in 1829. And today

it enjoys grade-II listing from Historic England.

The other thing Bermondsey was all too well known for was its brewing, and by extension, its pubs.

The Anchor Tap (no. 20 Horsleydown Lane) earned its name for being “the tap” of the Anchor Brew House in Shad Thames, meaning it was the brewery’s closest pub, and where most of its barrels were rolled along to.

“Southwark was probably at the centre of London’s brewing,” Jonny says, “because it was by the Thames, so this is where all the ingredients were delivered, and they would’ve used the river to drive mills.”

Looking south of the borough, Johnny talks up the Ivy House in Nunhead (no. 40 Stuart Road), which is well-known today as London’s only co-operatively owned pub, and was the in the UK to be listed as an Asset of Community Value.

Our guide’s preoccupation with the Ivy House is also for its old reputation as one of the capital’s major venues on the gigging circuit.

Johnny said: “The likes of Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Dr. Feelgood would have all played there. It was a big stop for ‘pub rock’ bands, which was like a pre-cursor to punk.”

He also writes that it started life as the Newlands Tavern in 1868, and was owned by the East End brewer Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co. Johnny praised the co-operative system (ownership by locals as shareholders) as a future model for pub ownership for the rest of London.

A similarly peaceful setting is The White Horse (no. 20-22 Peckham Rye), which opened in the 1820s, and is currently owned by the Parched Pubs group. It has a small claim to fame, thanks to its mention in Muriel Spark’s novel The Ballad of Peckham Rye, published in 1960.

Sparks tells a self-reflective story of a Scottish migrant’s visit to Peckham.

The protagonist, Dougal Douglas MA, regards himself as “a devil”, and is sent to Peckham at the behest of his boss at a textiles factory at home, to “bring vision to the lives of [the company’s] workers”. But Dougal finds its inhabitants sterile and unremarkable by comparison.

The White Horse is included as one of many drinking stops that character Humphrey Place visits on a pub crawl, as well as the Peckham Hotel and the Morning Star, the Heaton Arms and the Harbinger. It is written that Humphrey “walked across to the White Horse and drank one bitter”.

Southwark Pubs was released on September 15. Johnny had written five other books for publisher Amberley, including Brewing in Kent; Clerkenwell and Islington Pubs; and City of London Pubs.

ur visit to new restaurant Florentine was a night of nice surprises as we did not know what to expect. What we encountered was fine dining with five star service and pretty much being taken hostage by the restaurant’s hospitality. We were willing captives, writes Michael Holland...

On arrival we were given the option of having pre-dinner drinks at the bar or going straight to a table. Nina chose the bar and quickly followed up by choosing a Bubbly Kent, a sweet and sour, rum based cocktail with a dash of Chapel Down Brut - an excellent example of English sparkling wine.

I had the Kent bubbles neat, without all the frivolities that my partner enjoys so much. We were provided with menus, a bowl of olives and one of salted popcorn as we sat in the plush black and gold surroundings feeling quite wonderful.

For reviews I like to try that which I have not tried before, so straightaway ordered the Nettle Soup with Crème Fraîche. Nina told me how her SAS father made it at home for the family.

Disturbingly she added that he also brought roadkill home, though her mother refused to allow the children to join him for dinner when he had rabbit, fox or hedgehog. We were offered another drink and this time I had a Portobello London Pilsner. My partner went for the House Spritz that she soaked up with another bowl of popcorn.

When we eventually sat down a warm and delicious rosemary bread was brought and then the first courses. The nettle soup was a thick, green, earthy affair that I’m sure I will be making after a foraging expedition. Nina’s Tuna Tartare with Avocado, Lime and Ponzu was simply sublime.

Our server suggested wine so I went for a Romanian Sauvignon Blanc that I have never seen before.

It was unbelievably good. Nina’s award winning Uno Txakoli, Goianea from Spain could not compare. She wanted to swap but

Being connected to a 4 Star hotel Florentine has many single diners passing through on business, sitting at the bar or a table with their laptops lighting up their faces. A DJ plays sounds that pulsate but not loudly. A team of smart, aproned young servers ensure everyone gets exactly what they want, and more.

Nina was already planning a return visit for a Sunday roast.

After a childhood that included a deer being brought home and hung in the basement, Nina had been off meat for 36 years. Now she is back eating steak, and watching her

devour a 32-day aged, 220g grass fed rib-eye is pure spectacle. She goes off into another world as she makes up for that lost time. While she polished off her steak and chips she also polished off a Portuguese red. ‘Better than the Spanish,’ she informed me.

My Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna Steak with Green Beans and Tomato Chimichurri was fine but I so wanted to swap with Nina.

However, after giving me one sample taste (Out of this world) she refused to negotiate.

At this point we were completely sated. Our server tried to tempt us

in to the Venetian Doughnuts, baiting us with in-depth descriptions of what they actually were, but we were full to the brim.

Florentine has it all. It can be used as a local, for a quick bite, celebrations or just to do some work.We loved it there and was amazed at how some of the prices were less than a pub we were in recently.

Nina had a coffee before we left but then walked into the glass door that she thought was automatic. I guess I’ll be blamed for the shiner she’s sporting today, while I’ll be blaming the generous hospitality.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it has approved, under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and pursuant to agreement with Lambeth Council in respect of that part of Denmark Hill which lies within the London Borough of Lambeth referred to in item (b) below, the provision of ‘Ped-X’ pedestrian crossings (being a traffic signal controlled pedestrian demand crossing with a crossing countdown timer display) at the following locations:- (a) DENMARK HILL, the centre of which would be located 48.5 metres north of the northern kerb-line of Orpheus Street. ASHLEE HINCKS scored four minutes from time as Millwall Lionesses came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Doncaster Belles in their FA WSL 2 clash last weekend.

Rebecca Rayner and Rhiannon Roberts put Doncaster two goals up inside half an hour, before Charlie Devlin gave Lee Burch’s side hope by pulling one back just before the halftime break.

Hincks, who had earlier struck the crossbar with a free-kick, ran onto a long ball in the 86th minute to finish past Belles goalkeeper Jules Draycott to earn her side a point.

“I’m really happy. It’s always a difficult place to come here,” Hincks said. “I don’t think we deserved to be 20 down but to come back and get a point shows great resilience.

“Because we were dominant, even when we conceded the second, I still thought that we were in this game.

“We created so many chances and I just knew that we would take one.

Getting the goal just before half-time was key because obviously we came out with momentum in the second half and they were the opposite.

“I think it was so important. As our manager says, if you can’t get the three points then at least go and get a draw.

“I think it was important that we didn’t fall away. It’s a long trip home with nothing to show for the game.

“It’s always nice to score, of course, but it’s about the performance and the team today so that’s really pleasing.”

Lionesses manager Burch added: “It was a really good performance. It was weird because, like Watford last week, even when we were 1-0 down I was

“The killer was the second goal which really put us on the back foot for a while.

HERNE HILL cyclist Fred Wright’s first action as a SportsAid athlete was not on the track or road, but in a field – listening to Elton John.

Three years ago, Wright was contacted with an offer of SportsAid funding and two tickets to the Rocket Man hitmaker’s live show at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire.

And the eighteen-year-old was back at the same location last week as part of SportsAid Week, taking part in a spin

at London Westside Rangers.

Six ft 7ins forward Richard Amaefule was the star man on Saturday, finishing with an impressive nineteen points and 21 rebounds, while third year guard Lamin Dumbuya was effective off the bench on Sunday with thirteen points and eleven rebounds.

“I’ve had a bit of an unfortunate season with crashes, but I managed to get some good results on the track,” said Wright, a

“I’ve never experienced anything quite like the omnium win – in the team pursuit it was more controlled, you know you can do the time, you know you can get the medals.

“But in the omnium anything can happen – I couldn’t believe it.”

Wright is relocating to Manchester to further his development in the years to come, and will no doubt be hoping to add to his growing reputation as one of

the country’s most talented young riders.

He appeared at Stoke Park as a way of giving something back to the charity that has backed him all the way during a critical period in his career.

“This is where I received my first award, three years ago now, it’s flown by,” Wright said. “The two years of funding made everything so much easier, as a cyclist especially, with the amount of equipment you have to buy.

“It was actually the first spin class I’ve ever done, though. It was kind of what I

expected – cheesy music and someone shouting at you!

“Three years ago, I got an email asking me to come to an Elton John concert to receive a SportsAid award. That was when I first realised that people were investing money in me, [thought] I might be alright at this.

“It was good fun. I wouldn’t say I was a fan of Elton but we enjoyed the concert!”

FISHER ARE through to a second-round clash with Lordswood in the SCEFL Challenge Cup after an extratime 2-1 win over Kent Football United on Tuesday night.

Jamie Brown put Fisher in front after ten minutes but soon went off injured, Trey Small coming on.

Fisher led at the break and Ritchie Hamill almost doubled the advantage but saw his shot crash off the post.

Kent equalised through Nick Gonsalves to take the game into the added period, before Small popped up with two minutes to go to steal the winner.

That made it three wins in a row for the Rotherhithe-based outfit. After a comfortable victory in the FA Vase the previous weekend, Dean Harrison’s side travelled to Sutton Athletic last Saturday.

Fisher were fast out of the blocks and took the lead ten minutes in when Dan Bowden ran onto a pass over the top of the home defence to flick the ball over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net.

Bowden got his and Fisher’s second in the 36th minute. Toyo Adeshina picked up a loose pass before beating his man down the right and crossing for Bowden to fire home from six yards.

Fisher continued to dominate but with ten minutes left Sutton pulled a goal back from the spot through Chris Mirlees after the visitors handballed.

Harrison sent on Cameron Stevenson and Pat Geddis, who was making his Fisher debut. Stevenson did not take long to make an impact, playing a pass over the top of the defence for Brown, who took the ball down deftly on the righthand corner of the box before crashing a shot beyond the helpless goalkeeper.

Kongo back in the ring

BERMONDSEY FIGHTER Chris Kingo is back in the ring at York Hall this Saturday as he aims to extend his professional record to 6-0.

Welterweight ‘2Slick’ has been sparring Chris Eubank Jr and 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Josh Taylor ahead of the bout.

The ‘York Hall Brawl’ event is scheduled to start at 7pm. Kongo’s opponent had yet to be confirmed at the time of going to press.

The result leaves Fisher seventh in the SCEFL First Division table after their fine recent form. They have lost just one of their last eleven fixtures in all competitions after two defeats in their opening two league games of the season.

This weekend, Fisher face local rivals Forest Hill Park at St Paul’s. The club are participating in Non-League Day, an initiative running across the

country to boost attendances.

A club spokesperson said: “The main thing is it’s Pay-What-You-Like which will hopefully encourage more neutrals and first-timers to attend St Paul's.

“Obviously as a south London derby it's going to be an entertaining day of football and we are enthused to be participating in the Non-League Day initiative.”

Hamlet to donate betting funds Docklands and Fisher junior round-up ‘Repeat or revenge’ DULWICH HAMLET are donating any funds they receive through betting sponsorship to charity – after reiterating their objections to such deals.

The Isthmian League this season struck an agreement with Betting.net, meaning Hamlet are required to carry the logo of the betting company on their website.

Hamlet recognise the need for the League to source funds to help smaller clubs, but have taken the opportunity to raise awareness of gambling addiction.

In a statement this week, Hamlet said: “We have been in discussions with the League and would wish to support them as we understand how difficult it is to secure sponsors and also that the money helps to offset costs for clubs that do not have large revenue.

“Whilst we would not personally accept sponsorship from betting companies, we do not wish, as a longserving member club, to go against directives that democratically come from the Isthmian League, so we shall

comply with their wishes, while still stating our objections to this sort of sponsorship.

“We remain fully supportive and appreciate the work put into our league by all of the Isthmian League management board.

“However, we have also taken the opportunity to express our views on sponsorship from the gambling industry and reiterate our club position on this. As part of these discussions, it has been agreed that should the club gain financially from the sponsorship then it will donate that money to a charity that supports those with gambling addictions.”

Meanwhile, Hamlet are up to fourth in the Bostick Premier League table after last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Worthing.

DOCKLANDS UNDER-16s came from 2-0 down with ten men to draw 2-2 away at Long Lane last weekend, Josh Hymm scoring a superb goal before Connor Bruxton grabbed a late equaliser.

The club’s under-12 side were 12-0 winners over HF Sports Paulista. The scorers were Bjorn Thomas (3), Frankie Lane (3), Bryan Sangare (2), Sean Ellis (2) and one each from Frankie Hull and Tyrese Alli.

Docklands under-10s were mascots at last Saturday’s Championship clash at The Den between Millwall and Barnsley and then turned in a battling performance on Sunday to draw 33 with AFC Lewisham Lions.

Docklands led for most of the game but could not hang on to their lead.

FISHER UNDER-7s continued their good run with two convincing wins over Welling. They won the first game 5-0 and the second 3-0, AJ Sinclair scoring a hat-trick in both games. Man of the match was Freddie Cummings who was defensively solid and didn't concede a goal.

Fisher’s under-8 side earned their first point of the season away from home against Mighty Royals Elite, as they recovered from a 5-1 defeat to draw 4-4 in the second game after being 4-2 down. Birthday boy Mohammed Essal scored four goals and Emmanuel De Marcos got one.

Crockenhill hit back in the eleventh minute of a frantic opening period when Reece Cullen finished smartly.

Stansfeld restored their two-goal cushion fifteen minutes later when Shinners added the finishing touch after good work from Billy Jolley.

Despite continuous pressure Stansfeld had to wait until the 54th minute for their fourth goal, this time Shinners turning provider as he flicked

on a long clearance from Lewis Collier into the path of Harry Gamble, who went through a static Crocknhill back four and calmly slotted past the onrushing goalkeeper.

– David Haye gets second chance

DAVID HAYE and Tony Bellew made very different predictions after it was announced that their rematch would take place on December 17.

Bermondsey’s Haye was stopped in the eleventh round by Bellew in their first bout in March, and the Liverpool fighter has vowed to finish his opponent’s career when they meet at the 02.

Predictably, Haye is promising to end it inside the distance.

Haye said: “He will not hear the final bell.

It’s not going to go to points – there will be a conclusive knockout. That’s the prediction.

I’m not going to say I’ll do it in the first round, second round like last time. I got that way wrong.

MILLWALL MUST be sick of the sight of Barnsley.

In Neil Harris’ first season in charge it was Lewin Nyatanga who popped up with an injury-time winner for the Tykes at The Den. David Forde didn’t survive the cull after that game.

Barnsley scored three again at Wembley at the end of that season, after winning 2-1 in January.

Saturday’s victory was their fifth in succession against Millwall, and it was hard to say it wasn’t a deserved one.

Tom Bradshaw gave Barnsley the lead in the 40th minute when he fired Harvey Barnes’ cross past Jordan Archer. Bradshaw scored his second in the 60th minute after Lee Gregory had levelled from the spot just before halftime.

Mamadou Thiam’s late penalty sealed a first away win for Barnsley in the league this season and the three goals contributed by Tykes strikers contrasted with the form this season of Millwall’s front men.

Gregory – who was making his 150th Lions appearance – scored his second goal of the season after he had been fouled by Matty Pearson, a decision that led to a protest from Paul Heckingbottom and his banishment to the stands in the second half.

Bradshaw has seven this season, but it was another blank for Steve Morison, who hasn’t scored since May’s play-off final. Gregory has one from play this campaign and Tom Elliott the same.

Millwall will feel they should be higher than fourteenth in the table and they probably would be if they had someone else to take the strain off Morison, someone else with a reliable goal record. Harris may yet add to his

It was the second time Heckingbottom had seen his side defeat Millwall 3-1.

The Barnsley manager has done a particularly impressive job give there were just two players in the side on Saturday that started the League One play-off final between the clubs in 2016. Afterwards, Heckingbottom said: “Millwall are difficult to play against and they've done some damage already this season to some real good sides.

They make you defend, the way they play they get plenty of balls into your box.

“But I think they only really had the one chance in the first fifteen minutes that Davo (Adam Davies) has saved and then in the second half the Steve Morison header, so to a man we've defended our box magnificently well, and then as we grew into the game we just got better and better.”

Millwall will now have a couple of

weeks to stew over the result, and Harris will hope that the international contingent of five first-team players comes back safe and well.

He’ll keep a particularly close eye on George Saville, who may feature for Northern Ireland in the final round of World Cup qualifying fixtures. It would throw Millwall’s season into disarray if Saville were to pick up an injury, with Shaun Williams set to miss the next three months with damage to ligaments in his knee.

Williams suffered the injury in the first half of the 2-1 win over Reading last Tuesday, and it will be 2018 before he is seen in competitive action again.

Saville and Williams have been Millwall’s best performers this season, along with Shaun Hutchinson.

Williams is still sometimes underestimated by Lions fans. His clever use of the ball is key to Millwall’s game plan. He rarely takes more touches than is necessary, and

more often than not locates a team-mate in space with minimum fuss. Williams’ reading of the game usually takes him into areas where he is in position to make interceptions, another quality Millwall will miss.

It now gives Ryan Tunnicliffe the chance for a regular run in the side, and Ben Thompson will also likely see league action. He last played in the league on April 22.

Elliott should also be back after the international break and in contention to face Brentford. It is evident Morison, now 34, needs resting more often this season, and Elliott has shown in glimpses that he has the presence to make a positive impact.

Millwall can be satisfied with where they are after eleven games, almost a quarter of the Championship campaign.

But this result was a reminder, after three stunning home wins in a row at home, that there is always a side in this division capable of spoiling the party.

Lions defender Sid: ‘The highs and lows – it’s all helped me grow up’

SID NELSON will be heading back to Newport in disguise on Saturday.

Well, sort of. He will be sporting a face mask, necessary to protect the broken nose he suffered in a 1-0 defeat against Colchester last weekend.

Millwall fans will know from watching Nelson playing senior football from the age of eighteen that he likes a challenge.

He got out of his comfort zone at the start of the season to take up another one at Yeovil. That was their first home defeat of the season, after their best league start at Huish Park in thirteen years. But they started the campaign in a wretched state.

Nelson had faced into something similar last January. Out of the first-team picture at Millwall, he went to Newport, whom he will be trying to get one over at the weekend.

It was Nelson’s first time moving away from home, venturing across the Welsh border to try to help dig a side out of relegation difficulty.

There appeared little hope of that.

Defeat at Wycombe two days before Nelson signed on loan left them five points off safety and in real danger of dropping out of the Football League.

By March 4 that gap had stretched to a seemingly unbridgeable eleven points with just twelve games to go.

But Graham Westley was sacked, Mike Flynn took over, and Newport remarkably survived, though Nelson was in and out of the team towards the end of the season.

Nelson, 21, spoke at the time about playing alongside people whose livelihoods were at stake. He knew he would be going back to Millwall in the summer but it had made an impact on him. It certainly didn’t put him off.

This season Yeovil came calling after they had shipped eight goals at Luton on the opening day of the season, and fifteen in their first four games.

Nelson was pitched straight into action, starting in the centre of defence as Darren Way’s side defeated Coventry 2-0 for a first clean sheet in nine games.

That Colchester blip aside, it has gone well at the club. He is currently living in the town and, at 21, learning to cope with being away from his home in Lewisham.

“For me, it’s been the best month in

footballing terms apart from the month I made my debut at Millwall,” Nelson told the News this week.

“It’s probably been the best month football-wise and learning-wise that I’ve ever had. I’m getting games and playing well so it’s been good so far.

“I spoke to a few lads that had played for Yeovil, like Byron Webster. It just seemed we would be singing off the same hymn sheet, really.

“The gaffer here had heard about me before and he has put his trust in me. It was about getting game time and Yeovil was the club for me. I did have other options but speaking with people and to the gaffer here made me want to be here.

“He knew the sort of player I was. He told me to come in, to be myself and to try to lead the back four as much as I could.

“He’s allowed me to play my game without asking me to do anything I wouldn’t normally do.

“I’m living in Yeovil at the moment. I go home when I can to visit my family.

“It’s a good experience. I did it last year at Newport, lived in Wales. It’s good to pick up life skills, learn your own way, eat and train properly.”

Nelson might be out of sight as Millwall settle into life in the Championship, but he is certainly not out of mind.

Lions boss Neil Harris has always insisted his long-term future is with the club, though the recruitment of Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper put more obstacles in Nelson’s way as he tried to break into the first team.

Harris recently checked to see how the defender is finding life in League Two. “I’ve spoken to the gaffer a few times,” Nelson said. “He rang me not so long ago and we had a good chat. That was positive. I think other people from Millwall have been coming to watch the games as well. It’s good to know I’m still involved in that way, talking to Millwall while I’m here.

“I’m really close with all the boys. I’ve been keeping an eye out as much as I can.

It’s been a great season so far.

“For me, I try not to worry about who’s there and who’s being brought in. It’s about what I need right now at this moment in time. Obviously it does become a factor but I have to concentrate on myself.

“I needed regular game time week-in, week-out in men’s football, which is competitive. Under-23s football is nowhere near the same.

“I haven’t played a competitive game

for Millwall for coming up towards a year. I was on loan at Newport and here now and mentally and physically it’s very demanding.

“It’s about people’s livelihoods. People could be out of pocket [with relegation].

It’s good to see that side of it. It’s completely different playing higher up than lower down the leagues.

“At Yeovil the fans demand a lot. It was only a few years ago they were a lot higher up the league. It’s good being here with that pressure, to develop the mental side of it.

“I did it for the challenge. It puts a lot more pressure on my shoulders coming in. We’ve been in every game so far, we’ve shut up shop in terms of letting goals in.”

Nelson’s loan deal runs until January, but he isn’t thinking about where he will be playing his football in the second part of the season.

Odds are Yeovil won’t want him to go anywhere.

“At the moment I’m concentrating on playing as many games as I can before January,” Nelson said. “The closer January gets, I should half know what to expect.

“I’ve been told to just concentrate on my football for now and on doing my job.”

Nelson has been through a healthy range of experiences in his short career.

He captained Millwall at nineteen years of age when Ian Holloway said he was the “future” of the club.

It was probably far too much pressure, though he wouldn’t change it now.

“There are a lot of things I probably would have done differently if I had picked myself,” he said of that time he was breaking into the first team and then given the armband. “I would have gone about it a different way if I’d had my own choice.

“I won’t forget the feeling I got and the buzz of it at such a young age. Everyone has their opinion on it but for me that’s been and gone now. It’s an accolade I can keep, but I’m a different person to then and I’m a different person to what I was when I made my last appearance for Millwall.

“What I’ve learned at Millwall has helped me so much coming down into the lower leagues. The pressure, the highs and lows – especially the lows.

“It’s all helped me adapt and helped me grow up a lot.”

Harris: ‘We’re three or four points off where we deserve to be’

NEIL HARRIS believes Millwall have got a “foothold” in the Championship – but warned against getting “carried away”.

The Lions are in fourteenth place in the table with thirteen points from eleven games, but were brought back down to earth after three home wins in a row as Barnsley won 3-1 at The Den last Saturday.

Harris admitted the loss to the Tykes was a “really steep learning curve”, and October doesn’t get any easier with trips to Brentford, tabletoppers Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday, we well as a home fixture against Birmingham City.

Millwall were one of the pre-season favourites to get relegated after promotion in 2016-17, but those odds have lengthened after some impressive performances that should have resulted in more points.

“Without getting carried away, we’ve got a foothold in the division.

We’ve shown enough in the first eleven games to be able to say, ‘right, we’re certainly not out of our depth,” Harris said.

“We’ve been competitive in all games. We can isolate Saturday and say that was a really steep learning curve for us.

“However far we had come in four undefeated games and three wins on the bounce at home, if we’re not at it, we will get beaten. There’s no hiding place from that.

“There was nothing in the game at the weekend. I’ve watched it back a

couple of times, there was nothing in it other than that they were more ruthless in the final third on the counter attack. That is the level.

“We didn’t hit our standards, for various reasons, and we got punished for it.

“Previous to that, if you look at the eleven games, 22 halves of football,

I would say there was probably only two, three of four of those 22 halves that a team has been better than us.

That’s a real positive.

“We’re probably a point behind where I’d really like to have been.

We’re at least a point if not three or four behind where we deserve to be.

“Having said that, we’ve had some

tough fixtures, but have managed to get a foothold. What’s important for us now is that over the course of the next eleven games we show the same ability and keep to the same standards. We want the same number of points if not more to really get that solid foothold in the division before Christmas.”

MY COLUMN this month is going to be focused around telling you all about Millwall Community Trust’s disability department.

Millwall Community Trust’s disability department has been running for over a year now and currently works with over 80 people who have different disabilities, from Down syndrome to mental health.

Over the past twelve months we have formed four football teams. We have the DS Lions and DS Lion Cubs, whose teams are made up of young boys and girls, aged 5-22, with Down syndrome, who train monthly and play matches bimonthly.

We also have Millwall Lions FC, which is a mental health team in partnership with SLAM (South London and Maudsley NHS trust), who train weekly and play monthly fixtures in the South London Grassroots League.

Then we’ve got Millwall Pan FC, which is a team made up of adults aged 18-30 with mixed disabilities. This is in partnership with the Football Foundation.

Last, but certainly not least, we have Millwall Lion Hearts, who are a team in partnership with Bede House. It is made up of a mix of adults with learning difficulties who train weekly and play matches monthly in the South London Special League.

The department is run by Ben Perryman, who does a fantastic job from his base in the Lions Centre.

I’d like to finish by saying a big ‘thank you’ to all Lions supporters and The Millwall Supporters’ Club. Because of everything involved they've now got a new kit sponsored by Millwall fans.

O’Brien settled in Irish camp

AIDEN O’BRIEN looked relaxed and comfortable in front of the press on international duty for the first time – as he explained how life in non-league football was the making of him.

O’Brien was in demand in Dublin this week along with uncapped Sean Maguire from Preston and Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan as the Irish prepare for their final two World Cup qualifiers against Moldova on Friday and Wales the following Monday.

O’Brien – who turned 24 Wednesday – recalled the early part of his career when a Republic of Ireland call-up was the furthest thing from his mind during loan spells at the likes of Aldershot, Hayes & Yeading and Staines.

“That was me learning my trade and getting out, getting some minutes in men’s football,” he said. “It was vital for me. It’s done me the world of good now playing week-in, week-out for Millwall.

“I can’t ask for much more at the moment. I’m away with my national team and I just want to show everyone what I can do. I’m proud to be here.”

O’Brien last represented Ireland at under-21 level, where he scored five times in ten games.

The Islington-born attacker detailed the strong ties he has always felt to the country.

“I was sixteen, seventeen. I had the option of going for Ireland and my dad got the call. There was no decision to be made,” O’Brien insisted.

“I’ve come through the ranks — now I’m here, I want to stay here.

“My whole family for a tournament would always support the Irish rather than the English.

“My family from my mum’s side is born-and-bred Irish. I’ve always dreamed of playing for Ireland.

“I’ve always been waiting for the call to get an international first cap for the senior squad. I never actually thought when I was a youngster that it was going to happen.

“I was just always like, ‘ah it might happen. I don’t know. It might happen’. But as I’ve gone through my career, I’ve had a sniff and a bit more and more and obviously I’m here now.”

O’Brien was named as one of the forwards in the squad by Martin O’Neill, but he explained he is comfortable across a number of attacking positions.

“I can’t complain. I’ve played on the left for two-and-a-half years now, but I’ve scored goals and I’ve got my international call-up, so I’d be silly to say I’m not enjoying it and it’s not giving me success.

“I’m able to play most places in attack, so there’s no specific position.”

NEIL HARRIS says Millwall “won’t hesitate” to add to the squad in January’s transfer window.

Harris admitted the Lions found themselves “a little bit short” of options over the first eleven league games, after Lee Gregory’s suspension and Tom Elliott’s injury stretched attacking resources.

forward Ashley Hunter before the August transfer window closed, and could look to bolster their attacking options when it reopens.

Harris and his management team are assessing the campaign so far during the current international break, and any decision on transfers will be made closer to the end of the year.

“We are cutting our cloth accordingly at this level,” Harris told the News. “We can’t operate at the same level as probably 90 per cent of the rest of the division, taking two or three clubs around us out of the equation.

“I am happy working like that, I do like a tight-knit squad. It has worked so well for us in the first eleven games. Yes, maybe the odd time we have found ourselves a little bit short but you have to balance that with the thought that over the previous nine or so games would we have had as happy a group if they weren’t getting as much football?

“We’re always looking to improve, that’s the main thing. I’ll be spending time with my staff this week to assess the first quarter of the season.

“If we feel we can add anyone at any stage we will look to do that. If we feel

we need to improve the squad in January then we won’t hesitate.

“But we’ve got a long way to go until then, another dozen fixtures before the start of January. We have to continue to make sure we build this group, continue to learn like we have done.

“And we have learned quickly at times. After Ipswich we had to learn quickly, we learned from Wolves. And we learned from victories as well.

“Now is the time to work on the players we’ve got to help them be better and continue the good form that we’ve had.”

Williams damaged lateral knee ligaments in the first half of the 2-1 win over Reading last week.

The 30-year-old midfielder was ruled out of the clash with Barnsley last Saturday – only the third league game he has missed since the start of the 2016-17 season.

Lions boss Neil Harris admitted the loss of Williams was a blow after his “outstanding” form this season.

Williams is expected to be sidelined for the rest of 2017 after playing with the injury for most of the game against the Royals.

Harris said: “He did it in the first half in a collision after about half an hour. He got through the rest of the game in a little bit of discomfort but no serious pain.

“So it came as a real surprise he was going to be out for a period of time.

“At the moment, as it stands, there is no operation. The surgeon is quite happy to put him in a brace and see how the healing process happens naturally, which is good news. It will enable him to tick over physically better that way.

“There’s no hiding away from the fact that it’s a disappointment for us but also for the lad because his form has been outstanding.”
