HAVE-A-GO HEROES TO BE APPLAUDED

T

HE HERO street cleaners and postman who came to a woman’s rescue remain bashful – claiming they only did want anyone should do.

They chased after thieves, who were on mopeds, after he heard the woman screaming at Greenland Dock, pulled the two males off their moped and recovered the woman’s phone.

The truth is that this type of crime is sadly all too common, especially in the busy areas of SE1 and SE16.

In last week’s paper we interviewed Southwark’s leading detective on moped robberies, which are invariably used to then carry out a wave of mobile phone snatches.

Detective chief inspector David Rutter said Southwark was roughly seventh in the pecking order out of London’s 32 boroughs. He listed a number of preventative measures members of the public could take to reduce the risk of being a target. These including talking on your phone shop-side instead of road-side, as well as using hands-free.

However, we know from past cases that one person or a gang of thieves can be responsible for a whole host of hits.

Unfortunately when we spoke to the police about this story they were very tight-lipped, saying only there were no arrests and asking people just to contact the general number 101.

Let’s hope this was for operational and investigative reasons, as these men did a great job almost apprehending these thieves, and it would be a real shame not to bring the perpetrators to justice because of a lack of information.

RIGHT TO ACT ON LEDBURY SAFETY

E

VEN IN a borough that has spent tens of millions carrying out safety checks after its own tower block disaster, Southwark is not immune to the fallout from the Grenfell Towers fire - as the Ledbury Estate makes clear.

Residents on the Peckham estate have been told they will have to move out whilst ‘intrusive’ fire-safety checks and major works are carried out. Gas supplies have also been switched off.

The call for housing boss Stephanie Cryan’s resignation seems somewhat gratuitous more a case of someone having to be blamed, rather than finding fault with what she’s done. The current council can’t really be blamed for works, or lack of them, dating back to the ‘60s, and whilst it is worrying that it took independent experts to uncover the scale of the problem, it is surely right that prompt action is being taken now.

The focus now is rightly on minimizing disruption for residents, and restoring heating and cooking facilities as soon as possible.

Having said that, council bosses may well be examining how thorough the work was that was carried out after Lakanal - if something on the scale of the Ledbury could have been missed.

Doorkins the Magnificat stars in Cathedral picture book

SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL’S resident cat has landed her first book deal.

A picture book chronicling the real-life exploits of Southwark Cathedral’s Doorkins is to be published Sunday.

The popular cat has been a regular face around the cathedral for almost a decade after turning up on its doorstep.

One December morning in 2008, the feral cat was found sitting on the doorstep of the cathedral, waiting for one of the vergers to let her in to escape the cold.

At first she was an occasional visitor, alternating between the comfort of the cathedral and the

leftover scraps from Borough Market.

But it didn’t take long for the feline to make the cathedral her permanent home and she could be found waiting by the door each and every morning – hence her name, Doorkins.

Doorkins the Cathedral Cat is written by Lisa Gutwein, who is married to one of the vergers at the cathedral, and illustrated by Rowan Ambrose, a dentist who is also part of the congregation.

Following the real-life exploits of Southwark Cathedral's selfproclaimed 'Magnificat', the book gives a complete tour of the cathedral and should be a hit with cat lovers.

It will be on sale on Amazon for £10.99 from August 21.

Rodents cause online blackout for south of borough RESIDENTS WERE left without broadband after rodents chewed through fibre cables, causing “extensive damage”, writes Chiara Giordano...

Sky broadband and call services first went down at 9.25pm on Thursday, August 10, with outages reported in Dulwich, Tulse Hill, Balham, Brixton, Nine Elms, Streatham, Vauxhall, South Clapham, Forest Hill, and Battersea.

A Sky spokesperson told the News that “extensive damage” had been caused by “rodents chewing through cables” but that service was restored by 10am the following day, Friday.

The company told customers on Twitter that “steps have been put in place to prevent from happening again” and that billing would be adjusted for loss of service.

However, the service went down again at 7.56pm on Friday, affecting both Sky and other providers, and was not fully restored until 11.43am on Saturday.

A Sky spokesperson said: “We don’t own the line affected but engineers from the supplier were at the scene by 11pm [after the first outage on August 10] and put a temporary fix in place as they continued to address the damage.

“As the engineers worked on a permanent solution there were issues with the temporary fix, resulting in the service going down again on the 11th at 7.56pm, again affecting Sky amongst other broadband providers.

“The engineers worked through the night to create a permanent fix, and service was fully restored at 11.43am on the 12th.”

One of the council workers chased after the thieves after he heard the woman screaming and saw the moped hurtling towards him at Greenland Dock.

He then bravely pulled the two males off their moped and confronted them after it came to a stop – before they ran off, abandoning the vehicle.

The second council officer is said to have come to the rescue after seeing where the thieves tossed the woman’s property as they made their escape.

It is also believed a postman tried and failed to stop the moped – but police have not confirmed any of the reports.

The quick-thinking street cleaner who chased after the thieves said he intervened because “people can’t get away with terrorising communities”.

He has been praised for his swift actions by the council and a passerby who witnessed the incident, but has shrugged it off as “just one of those things”.

“I would hope anyone would do the same,” the man, who did not want to be named, told the News.

A 26-year-old woman had her phone stolen near Greenland Dock at about 10.15am on Thursday, August 10, police confirmed.

A passer-by who witnessed the events unfold said the woman was “screaming hysterically”.

“She was walking along the pavement opposite the dock and there’s a side road there and they drove along and stole the phone off her,” he recalled.

“The woman was running along screaming ‘my phone’.

“I can’t be sure how it happened

but the moped turned down that road and was driving off and I just heard this massive bang.

“The moped was definitely down and there were two guys grappling with them [the moped riders] and there was someone on their phone speaking to the police.”

The eyewitness said the riders had helmets on and that the moped had a box on the back.

“There was probably a group of about five people or so around; it’s a busy thoroughfare,” he added.

Council leader Peter John said: “We are very proud to employ staff who always go above and beyond in their duties.

“In this case the officer stepped up without hesitation when he saw an opportunity to help someone, showing the kind of consideration and values we hold dear at Southwark.”

There have been no arrests and police enquiries continue.

Pooling together the plans for the lido PECKHAM

The campaign to reopen the open-air pool in Peckham Rye Park, which existed between 1923 and 1987, was launched in May last year by architects Studio Octopi.

It quickly reached its crowdfunding target of £63,000, meaning it could progress with drawing up plans for a 180 foot pool and café and community area.

James Glynn and Ben Lloyd-Ennals from the project have now said: “It has been a year since we reached crowdfunding and we have been working to realise the Peckham Lido dream as fast as we can. The project is a mountain of work and we are slowly but surely working our way through it.

“Since crowdfunding, we have built a website, hosted a programme of initial consultation to ask what people want from the lido, and now we are currently building a business plan around all of the feedback we were given and making the numbers stack up.”

James and Ben said after completing the business plan, a design proposal from

THE FAMILY of a severely-ill baby in King’s College Hospital, who fear doctors might seek legal powers to switch off his life support, have told the News doctors the Trust has “taken a new approach” to his care.

The News reported last week that a couple were seeking assurances from King’s after its solicitors wrote to the High Court suggesting treatment of six-month-old Isaiah Thomas should be brought to an end.

Isaiah suffered brain damage after complications during labour on February 18. He rests in King’s neonatal intensive care ward, where his mum, Takesha Thomas, and dad, Lanre Haastrup, watch over him day and night.

A Serious Incident Report published by King’s last month said there was a delay in identifying that Isaiah’s heartrate had significantly dropped for 27 minutes, before a doctor was summoned and an emergency caesarean ordered. The report said “ten or more minutes” could have been saved, which would likely have reduced the neurological damage. The report found no grounds for disciplinary action.

The incident left little Isaiah with a weak and inconsistent “respiratory drive”; meaning although his body and organs are growing naturally, his brain lacks the instinct to breathe independently for prolonged periods of time. Since his birth, Isaiah has been hooked up to a ventilator which breathes for him, and he is fed through a nasal tube.

Yesterday, a spokeswoman for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust would not say whether it had changed its position (as previously stated in a letter to the high court) that it would not be in Isaiah’s “best interest” to continue treatment. “Any decision on the court application would be made following private discussions with the family regarding the patient’s

ongoing care,” they said.

Takesha, from Peckham, and Lanre, form Brockley, believe King’s has not exhausted every option to ensure their son’s survival.

But Lanre told the News on Tuesday: “He [Isaiah] is now receiving one-to-one care and has been assigned a nurse just for himself, that’s strictly for him and no one else.

“The doctors can see now that he can breathe [without the ventilator] and is making attempts to breathe for himself without the ventilator. They have agreed to try and ween him off the ventilator. They have said he is responding well to the reduction in support,” the 38-year-old said.

But the Trust’s spokeswoman told the News: “The patient remains in a serious condition and we are not going to comment on his day-to-day treatment.

The family had said their argument for continuing Isaiah’s treatment would be that King’s had not done enough to “encourage” his respiratory drive. And that Isaiah’s doctors should reduce the programme of medication he was on, which Lanre said had made him “completely dependent” on a ventilator to breathe.

The Trust responded: “The patient’s respiratory drive has been assessed regularly by the neonatal team, the paediatric respiratory team and by the external opinions. He has been supported with synchronised ventilation for many months which allows for and responds to any respiratory effort generated by the patient. He has not been on sedating medicines since the second day of his life.”

Old Kent Road murder charge PECKHAM

A MAN has appeared at the Old Bailey charged with the murder of a teenager in Old Kent Road last week.

Dickson Tangu, 21, of Wilkinson Gardens, Croydon was charged on August 11 with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He appears at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, August 12.

Officers were called at 2am on Tuesday, August 8, with the London Ambulance Service to the scene, at the j u n c t i o n between Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road.

The victim, who was pronounced dead less than an hour after police arrived, was formally identified on Thursday, August 10, as nineteen-yearold Daniel Namanga.

Six others were arrested as part of the investigation. They included: • A 23-year-old man, who has been released under further investigation • A 21-year-old man, released under further investigation • A 25-year-old woman, released under further investigation • A 25-year-old woman, released and no further action will be taken against her • A 23-year-old man, released and no further action will be taken against him • A 31-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder, but has since been released under investigation Mr Namanga, known as Loni, was reported by the Wimbledon Guardian to have attended Rutlish School in Watery Road.

The Old Ruts Rugby Club in Wimbledon, which Mr Namanga attended, tweeted saying: “All of our thoughts are with Dan Namanga’s family and friends. RIP.” But the tweet was later deleted.

An investigation led by detective inspector Domenica Catino, will continue.

Tangu will submit a plea at a later date.

1000 mile rally for Guy’s charity

THE MANAGER of Shad Indian restaurant on Tooley Street is taking part in a 1,000 mile car rally from London to Venice to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Kod Miah and his three teammates are joining the Motorscape Rally on September 2 which will cover eight countries in five days. They are hoping to raise £750 for Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Kod said: “We wanted to do something to raise some money for the hospital because about five years ago my mum had a kidney transplant there. It’s changed her life and I wanted to find a way of thanking them.”

Those taking part buy a banger worth less than £500 or older than 20 years old. Kod’s team bought a car for £450 and with the help of

one of the team members who is a mechanic, they have spent the past four months fixing it up.

The team will be competing for prize money of up to £300, which will be donated to the charity if they top the leader board from the daily challenges.

Two arrests over fatal SE5 knifing EXCLUSIVE

TWO MEN arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Mohamed Kakay outside a church in Camberwell have been re-bailed, whilst detectives continue their investigation, writes Owen Sheppard...

Two males from south-east London aged 20 and sixteen - were arrested on July 11, on suspicion of murder.

They were due to attend a south London police station on a date in mid-August. But a Met Police spokesman said the bail term has been extended until “a date to be confirmed”.

A total of seven people have been arrested as part of the investigation, called when Mr Kakay was found wounded outside St Giles’ Church, in Camberwell Church Street, on November 19 last year.

A 20-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder in December 2016, is also due to return from bail in August. Three other men were released and ruled out of the case.

On police were called to the scene by the London Ambulance Service at 9:15am.

Officers found Mr Kakay, 33, from Bromley, suffering from stab injuries. He died in hospital later that afternoon.

It is believed that Mr Kakay had entered the grounds at the back of St Giles' Church at around 9am. He was stabbed in his abdomen but managed to stagger along the path at the side of the church to the front and out onto Camberwell Church Street, collapsing near Wilson Road.

DETECTIVES LEADING the investigation into the fatal stabbing of a father of three in Peckham say they have no new “significant leads” after a £20,000 reward was offered.

Bilal Kargbo, 26, died in Blenheim Grove on April 28 amid crowds of 60 to 70 people. A post-mortem found he had received stab wounds to his chest and arm.

A 23-year-old man, Parish Ofoeme from Burrage Road in Greenwich, has denied the charge of murder and is due to appear in court for trial in October.

Last month an appeal was made

by Scotland Yard for witnesses to provide video footage of the incident Detective inspector Jason Grafham said: “[We] believe a number of people recorded the attack on their mobile devices. Therefore we are now offering a reward of up to £20,000 for video footage that would assist and ultimately lead to the conviction of the person(s) responsible.”

But a Met Police spokesman has

told the News this week: “We have yet to receive any significant leads since this appeal; officers continue to appeal for assistance and the reward of £20,000, for anyone who comes forward with video footage that leads to a conviction, is still valid.”

Mr Kargbo’s family have also released a statement, which reads: “Please think of the trauma and hurt caused to our family. Bilal has left behind three lovely children who deserve justice.

“Our family is absolutely devastated with Bilal’s loss; he was a wonderful father, partner, son and friend. Bilal meant so much to us and it is heart-breaking to know that we will never see or speak to him again.

“It is hard to put into words the suffering that this has caused our family and it will take a long time for us to come to terms with what has happened.”

Peace medal for Korean vet Douglas PECKHAM

Douglas’ daughter, Stephanie Larby, with whom he lives, told the News: “I was very proud. Nine of us went to the presentation when he received the medal. I started crying.

“Dad’s a very non-emotional person, although we can tell he feels it. He won’t talk about his experience in the war at all. I think he saw a lot of awful things.”

Stephanie, 52, said her dad had lived in Peckham for more than 30 years, and worked as an accountant after the war.

He was born in Croydon, and lived there until he joined the army.

“He’s had a full life,” Stephanie said. “His health is very good for his age and he’s still active.

“He’s also got loads of medals.

Three are on display in our lounge, and there’s others in his room. But he’s very modest about them, and for all the things he’s done. He just says they were ‘a part of his life’.”

A PECKHAM man has been honoured with an Ambassador for Peace medal for his role with the United Nations during the Korean War.

Douglas Nye, 85, was stationed in the Korean peninsula as a corporal in the Royal Engineers between 1951 and 1953, in a campaign that saw the US and international troops defend South Korea from invading North Korean forces and Chinese allies.

Though Douglas is unable to speak due to a breathing condition, his family emailed the News with information about his time there.

He said he joined the army at the age of seventeen, seeing it as “an adventure”.

He was stationed at the front line, as a driver and wireless operator, and as body guard for Colonel Peter Moore.

After Moore was discharged, Douglas was “in charge of radio signals and getting telephone lines laid. That was a significant role as getting messages in and out was so important”.

Asked if he was stationed with other south Londoners, Douglas replied that he once found himself stationed with a young Michael

A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER with concerns over a housing development’s impact has said residents are “like lambs to the slaughter”.

Jean McCorry, 70, fears plans to build a two-bedroom “chalet-type” house next door to her Bermondsey home will affect residents’ light and privacy.

Satish Jassal Architects has drawn up plans to demolish an existing garage on land at the rear of 112 Fort Road – a terraced home sold at auction by the council – and to build a split-level house in its place.

If built, the house would overlook the rear gardens of terraced houses in Fort Road and would be bordered by a set of four-storey blocks of flats in Balaclava Road.

It would have a bedroom, bathroom, and store on the lower ground-floor level, an entrance, kitchen, cycle store, refuse store, and terrace on the ground floor, and a second bedroom and bathroom on the upper ground floor.

The first floor would contain a living/dining area and a terrace.

In plans submitted to the council, Satish Jassal Architects stated that “the curtain wall glazing on the north, east and west facades, which face onto neighbouring properties, will be obscured glass”.

“This will allow sufficient light due to the size of the windows and at the same time will prevent overlooking,” the plans state. “The proposed bedroom windows all face onto Balaclava Road but are set back.”

In pre-planning application advice, Simon Bevan, director of planning at the council, told the architect firm that “whilst the proposal would clearly be of its time, the subordinate scale of the new dwelling and the high-quality materials are expected to preserve the character of the conservation area”.

However Ms McCorry believes that the development, which would sit on the edge of the Thorburn Square Conservation Area, would not be in keeping with the area and would impact on residents.

“My concerns are that the estate properties and the rest of those gardens lose their light and their

privacy,” the former council housing manager told the News.

“And I can’t believe somebody would buy a house with three sides of it in opaque glass so privacy will be affected.

“I think this developer is going to build this chalet-type house which is totally unsuitable to the area, doesn’t blend in whatsoever, and doesn’t bring anything the people of this area.

“We [residents in the area] are all going to have to sacrifice for this to go through; we are like lambs to the slaughter, we have no option here.”

In response, a spokesman for Satish Jassal Architects said: “The current design has evolved through our positive conversations with the Southwark planning department.

“This includes the proposed green butterfly roof, which has been inspired by the traditional London butterfly roofs in the areas.

“Specialist consultants have carried out extensive daylight and sunlight testing to assess the impact of the proposed new home on the surrounding neighbours and have confirmed that the levels of light received are within the Building Research Establishment (BRE) guidelines.”

COUNCIL LEADER REBUFFS CALLS FOR HOUSING CHIEF TO RESIGN OVER LEDBURY Cladding re-think

THE LEADER of Southwark Council has robustly defended his deputy, over calls from Ledbury Estate residents that the cabinet member for housing and deputy leader should resign.

The response from councillor Peter John with regards to his colleague, Cllr Stephanie Cryan’s position, follows revelations about the potential risk of collapse in the event of a gas explosion in the towers.

Residents were told via a letter on Thursday, August 10, that they would need to leave the four thirteen-storey blocks whilst “intrusive” fire-safety checks and major works are carried out.

Gas supplies were also switched off.

Building firm Arup were ordered by Southwark Council to carry out the tests after independent fire experts raised the issue with residents and the media that the towers would be vulnerable to “collapse” if a gas explosion occurred.

The council confirmed on August 10 that “strengthening works” – carried out on estates under government order across the UK, following the deadly Ronan Point tower block collapse in Newham in 1968 – may never have happened on the Ledbury, which were built that same year.

The letter to residents said: “This new information means we are now planning to temporarily decant the blocks over the coming weeks and months.

“We are in the process of purchasing a new build block in the vicinity of the Ledbury Estate and plan to reserve the 80 council properties at council rents for Ledbury Tower residents. We are also holding properties as they become empty in other parts of the borough for those affected.”

But a spokesperson for the recently formed Ledbury Action Group has said they believe Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, Cllr Stephanie Cryan (pictured), should resign.

“She should resign on the basis that the blocks have never been safe to have gas, and independent experts were telling them his over a month ago after making just one visit, but the council wouldn’t admit they were wrong,” the spokesperson said. “Meanwhile, she [Cllr Cryan] as well as Gerri Scott [head of housing] and Ian Swift [housing options manager] have all gone on holiday while we’re in desperate need.”

The spokesperson added: “I feel so emotional, so heartbroken, and sad to be leaving the Ledbury. But the only consolation is knowing that leaving will mean our children will be safe.”

Cllr John responded: “I strongly support Cllr Cryan and the work she’s been doing. And I’d question how many people are calling for her to resign – when we’ve been down on the estate, the vast majority of people are supportive of what we are trying to do.

And it’s completely gratuitous – how can Stephanie be to blame for designs made by the GLC back in the 1960s?”

A council spokeswoman said staff were in place to cover the senior officers who were on holiday, and that officers had been stationed at the estate’s TRA hall 24-hours-a-day to speak to residents.

Cllr John also wrote to residents on Tuesday after the visiting the day before.

His letter confirmed a “major works programme” is “likely to start next year to bring the Ledbury Towers up to an excellent standard, with a permanent solution to the cracks”. It also said residents “will of course be given the right to return to the towers… once they have been repaired and refurbished”.

And that plans for “compensation” payments will be decided.

Cllr John told the News that electric cookers and immersion heaters would be provided to residents to help them cook whilst gas has been cut.

Residents have also been told to use showers at Peckham Pulse leisure centre.

“The situation is evolving very rapidly, but we have a huge team of people working on this, trying to help everyone on the estate as best we can,” Cllr John said.

Since July 19 the council has been offering to move tenants to new flats by placing them in Band One on the housing waiting list, and offering home loss payments of £5,800.

Fire wardens remain on every second floor of the four towers, tasked with assisting with an evacuation should a fire occur.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has yet to decide whether to go ahead with plans to put cladding on three huge tower blocks in Peckham, as part of its Major Works programme.

The nineteen-storey blocks of the Tustin Estate, beside Old Kent Road and Ilderton Road, are due to undergo a multi-million pound refurbishment.

But the News has been told by a resident that cladding – which was originally included in the schedule of works – may be taken out of the plans.

A council spokesperson said: “The council is exploring all options in its major works programme, and many planned works will be re-considered in the light of the Grenfell tragedy.”

Since the Grenfell Tower disaster in Kensington and Chelsea, the use of cladding for insulating homes has become a worrying subject for residents in high-rise estates across the country.

Tests have shown that some forms of cladding, made from a

combination of aluminium sheets and insulation, can ignite when exposed to flame.

The Department of Communities and Local Government said on June 30 that 149 high-rise buildings in 45 local authorities across the UK had failed fire safety tests.

Southwark Council revealed last month that a low-rise blocks, Medina House in Peckham Rye, also had cladding that would ignite if exposed to “intense radiant heat”.

The News reported in April that Tustin Estate leaseholders will be billed upwards of £115,000 for the refurbishment of their homes.

Though the estate’s twenty leaseholders, the majority of whom are landlords, have yet to receive the official itemised bills for the works.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, previously said: “We recognise that because of the likely costs we will need to go over and beyond this in explaining the issues to those leaseholders who will be affected. We will offer oneto-one meetings with every leaseholder so that we can advise them on the individual options that are open to them to help spread the cost of these bills.”

GUY’S HOSPITAL will remove cladding on its £160million cancer centre after it failed fire safety tests.

Cladding from the building, which opened in September last year, was sent for testing following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The results revealed that rain screen panels, which cover fifteen per cent of the surface of the building, contain aluminium composite material.

The hospital has been told by the fire brigade that the building, which is fitted with full fire detection systems and sprinklers, is safe to remain open.

Work to remove the cladding will begin in the autumn.

Amanda Pritchard, chief executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We will carry out remedial work including the removal of cladding to ensure that we comply with the new Government advice, to reassure our patients and the public and to make sure that the cancer centre continues to reflect the highest safety standards.

“This will be done as quickly as possible in a planned and measured way, with work likely to start this

autumn.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff continues to be our highest priority.”

Around 80 people lost their lives during the Grenfell Tower blaze, in Kensington, which took place in the early hours of June 14.

A fire safety expert recommended an independent review should be carried out on Southwark Council’s housing stock in the wake of the tragedy.

It will look at whether fire safety measures are up to scratch in individual flats in the council’s 174 tower blocks, as well as other buildings such as schools and libraries.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, deputy council leader and cabinet member for housing, told the News it could cost almost £100million to install sprinklers in all council housing, with ongoing maintenance, if recommended by the review.

Any recommendations following the review will be considered for low-rise buildings across the council’s housing stock – not just high-rise.

The outcome of the review is expected to be made public in a report by autumn.

A BERMONDSEY cyclist knocked down and killed a mother of two before getting up and shouting at her as she lay injured, a court heard.

Charlie Alliston, 20, stands trial at the Old Bailey accused of killing 44-year-old Kim Briggs (pictured right) after ploughing into her on February 12 last year.

The court heard how Alliston, of Trothy Road, then eighteen, was allegedly travelling at 18mph on a fixed-wheel track bike with no front brakes when he crashed into Mrs Briggs as she crossed busy Old Street during her lunch break.

The HR consultant suffered "nonsurvivable brain injuries" and died in hospital a week later.

David Callan, who witnessed the crash, said in a statement read out in court: “I had my head down looking at something on my mobile phone when I heard a shout.

"It was a loud shout and seemed like a male voice conveying urgency like a warning or alert. It made me look up immediately, just in time to see a collision between a cyclist and a pedestrian.

"The cyclist flew through the air and the pedestrian fell at the point of impact.

"The cyclist clattered to the ground further down the road, but quickly sprang to their feet and shouted something at the pedestrian as they took a step towards the pedestrian who lay on the ground.

"It seemed like the same voice I heard immediately before the collision."

Jurors have heard how Alliston's "fixie" bike was not legal to use on the road without it being modified to add a front brake.

avoid collision if the bike had been fitted with a front brake.

Cross-examining, Mark Wyeth QC asked Mr Small if there could be a margin of error in his calculations of the average speed Alliston was going before he saw Mrs Briggs.

The expert replied that any difference would only have been a "fraction of a mile per hour".

Mr Wyeth suggested that Alliston had the right of way as the lights on the stretch of Old Street were green – and that Mrs Briggs could have avoided danger by using a pedestrian crossing less than ten metres away. Mr Small agreed.

In a police interview, Alliston insisted he thought Mrs Briggs would stop after he shouted out to her.

In transcripts read out in court, he said: "I have warned her to stop. I thought she would stop but she didn't. That's all I can say. That's all I can remember."

Asked why he did not have front brakes fitted, Alliston said: "I feel safe. I feel comfortable controlling my own speed."

Detective Constable Darren Case said: "Surely somebody must have said, when you take it out on the road you need a brake?"

The defendant said he never came across anything like that.

Alliston is charged with manslaughter and causing grievous harm by wanton and furious driving under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. He denies the charges.

A FEMALE pedestrian is still recovering in hospital after being hit when three mopeds mounted a pavement on London Bridge.

The woman was taken to hospital with a leg injury after being hit during the incident at about 12.40am on Wednesday, August 9.

“We are aware of an incident that took place this morning [Wednesday, August 9] at approximately 12.40am, whereby three mopeds mounted the east pavement travelling southbound on London Bridge,” a police spokesperson said at the time.

The woman remains in hospital recovering from her injuries. City of London Police are still investigating and no arrests have been made.

THE FIRST wheat harvest of the year was blessed during an annual celebration at Borough Market.

Lammas Day traditionally takes place in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at the beginning of

August each year between the summer solstice and autumn equinox.

To mark the occasion, bakers from Bread Ahead carried loaves of bread made from the new crop from the market to nearby Southwark Cathedral, where the bread was blessed.

Bread Ahead also donated 50p to homeless charity Robes for every

sourdough loaf sold across all three sites on the day.

Bread Ahead’s relationship with the cathedral stems from its opening four years ago, when their ‘mother’ dough – lovingly named Bruce – was first blessed.

Bruce lives on, and is still used to make the bakery’s famous sourdough to this day.

Arts school for Newington Library WALWORTH

AN ARTS school is set to move into the Newington Library, four years after the adjoining Walworth Town Hall was ravaged by a fire.

The Art Academy – an independent art school based in Borough High Street – has signed a two year lease with Southwark Council.

It will use the building to provide new facilities for its students, as well as courses available to the wider public and space for events such as public exhibitions available for free.

Two more creative groups Art Angel and Cool Tan Arts will also take up residence in the old library building in Walworth Road.

The Newington Library collection – currently at its temporary home in The Artworks – would be moved to another new venue in the Elephant and Castle and Walworth area by 2018, rather than move into a refurbished Town Hall building, as per the council’s previous plan.

The Art Academy is also continuing its crowdfunding campaign to raise £31,000, which it will use for improvements such as a new creative lighting system; redecorating; sounds proofing; WiFi installation and security.

Councillor Johnson Situ, cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration, said: “I am delighted that The Art Academy will be setting up in the old Newington Library. They will create

Transport for London revealed they were pushing ahead with plans for the bridge during a meeting with ward councillors last Wednesday.

And Mayor of London Sadiq Khan confirmed he wanted the bridge built “as soon as possible” during Mayor’s Question Time last week, saying “2020/2021 is the time schedule we are talking about”.

After being pressed for more details about the schedule and funding for the bridge by London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon, Mr Khan said he hoped “third parties” in the area would contribute towards the project.

“TfL anticipates that a public procurement process for a design and build partner will start in the autumn,” he added.

“I’m hoping that consultation on the preferred option takes place in 2018 before detailed plans are drawn up to allow an application to be made.”

Surrey Docks Liberal Democrat ward councillor Dan Whitehead, who met with TfL, said a design is expected by the end of the year, which could be available for public consultation by January/February.

“Building a bridge is what we [the Liberal Democrats] have been pushing for for many years so it’s

really positive that TfL aren’t just considering it anymore, it’s out there as a project,” he told the News.

“Everything from the meeting suggests that the developer and TfL are taking it seriously.

“A lot of consideration has to go into the height of the bridge because being on that part of the river there’s logistics about the tall ships going through so there has to be a balance.”

“The case for the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf pedestrian and cycle bridge is stronger than ever,” Caroline Pidgeon added.

“It will play a key role in supporting the new housing and employment that is growing on both sides of the Thames, as well as helping to reduce pressure on the Jubilee Line, especially at Canada Water. This is one project that really must be delivered on time.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle also said he had been pushing for the bridge to be delivered as soon as possible and that he was “delighted the Mayor is fast tracking the project”.

In addition to the bridge, the Mayor of London also said he was “keen” to see the cycle hire scheme extended to places like Rotherhithe.

For the scheme to be expanded to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, Southwark Council would have tocontribute about £3-4million in capital costs.

A council spokesperson said around £20,000 had been raised so far through sections 106 funds.

Notorious junction to be made more cycling and pedestrian-friendly

PLANS TO make a major junction by Camberwell Green more cycling and pedestrianfriendly have been unveiled by Transport for London.

The long-awaited proposals will aim to reduce the number of road accidents by 40 per cent in Camberwell Church Street, Denmark Hill and Camberwell New Road.

TfL’s ideas to improve the junction include: • Wider footways • A new crossing on Camberwell Road by Camberwell Passage • Wider crossings on Camberwell Road and Camberwell Church Street • More pavement space on the junction’s south east corner • Renewed footways • Countdowns on pedestrian street crossings • Southwark Council's proposal to move the Denmark Hill pedestrian crossing to Butterfly Walk. This was consulted on in July and August 2015 For cyclists:

PACKAGE INJURIES MYSTERY

THREE PEOPLE were injured after an envelope with an ‘unidentified substance’ was delivered to a Borough Market restaurant. Police were called to the incident at Feng Sushi, in Stoney

Street, at 1.38pm on Thursday, August 10.

The property was evacuated as a precaution and three people were treated for minor injuries.

The restaurant was cordoned off and a crime scene was put in place.

Forensic investigators were seen placing items in sealable bags and

brown envelopes, before eventually leaving the restaurant at about 5pm.

Police have not treated the incident as terror-related and there have been no arrests.

Met Police officers, London Ambulance Service, and London Fire Brigade were all at the scene.

Enquiries continue.

GCSE STUDENTS took a break from their summer holiday to learn from some of the world’s leading scientists and medics.

A group of 24 students from Southwark and Lambeth enjoyed interactive sessions such as lifesaving skills at St Thomas’ Hospital, extracting DNA from strawberries with scientists at King’s College London, and talking to patients and medical trial participants at the Maudsley Hospital.

Fifteen-year-old Victoria Agbejimi said the week was “really exciting and packed

with activities”.

“I didn’t realise how many different careers were available in healthcare and research,” she said. “It’s definitely opened my mind to other opportunities.”

Elizabeth Babalola, also fifteen, added: “I’ve been so surprised how important research is for a big hospital like Guy’s and St Thomas’.

“I’ve learnt so much about the atmosphere of a hospital and the importance of teamwork.”

The week-long King’s Health Partners Summer School is organised each year by the National Institute of Health Research Biomedical Research Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London.

Church mural completed

A DAZZLING mural painted onto the walls of a Peckham church had its “launch event” on Friday, August, 11.

The piece, named ‘Mary - Origin and Destination’ by street artist Giacomo Bufarini was completed at the beginning of the month.

It adorns the side of St John with St

Andrew Parish Church in Meeting House Lane, at the junction with Springall Street.

Bufarini, an internationallyacclaimed artist whose work can be seen all around the world, said: “It is really important to me to bring art to the streets; I believe that I have a responsibility as an artist to help connect the public with the arts.

“I really enjoyed this project because people were so enthusiastic

and welcoming and Father Peter was the best assistant/father/friend.

“I received some great compliments; a small child liked my mice and animals and others loved the scale and the bright colours. I hope it continues to bring happiness to the people of Peckham. ” Southwark Council funded the project with the support of St. John Chrysostom Parish Church and The Lady Peale Trust.

A ROTHERHITHE woman is gearing up to take on a gruelling four-day challenge in aid of mental health.

Sophie Baldry will climb the 1,344 metres of Ben Nevis, cycle 100 miles, complete a half marathon, and tackle a mental agility challenge to test her resolve over the course of the four-day Fourtitude Challenge.

The event was given its name to reflect that one in four people experience mental health problems – the effects of which Sophie has seen first hand.

The senior manager of group digital and transformation at Lloyds Banking Group will be joined by more than 60 colleagues, who hope to raise £250,000 for Mental Health UK. “I am personally motivated to raise money for Mental Health UK as I have experienced mental health problems myself and I am passionate about raising awareness and removing the stigma of talking about this important subject,” said Sophie.

“The Fourtitude Challenge seemed like the perfect way to show my support for

this as I have always found exercise to be a great way to improve mental wellbeing and I hope we can make a difference together.”

This demanding mental and physical challenge will take place from September 4-7 and is in aid of Lloyds Banking Group’s two-year charity partnership with Mental Health UK. The partnership aims to promote awareness of the link between mental health and money problems, encourage discussion between customers and colleagues, and raise at least £2million per year to launch a mental health and money advice service.

The CCG also works with other organisations to increase HIV testing including through testing in A&E through the ‘Do It London’ campaign, Southwark Council’s public health team and community outreach programmes.

Earlier this year Southwark CCG announced the appointment of an HIV Clinical Champion to raise awareness of the virus in the borough and help GPs overcome barriers to regular testing. GP Dr Cristina Guallar, a partner at the New Mill Street Surgery in Bermondsey who

has been a HIV specialist for the last 15 years, has been appointed to the new role.

She said: “About one in eight people living with HIV do not know they are infected. Some of them may not belong to any population considered at high risk for HIV. Therefore including an HIV test as a part of the routine blood tests offered in general practice, as well as increasing targeted testing to specific groups, will help to identify those who are unaware of their diagnosis and offer them early treatment.

“We know that people living with HIV who are treated are no longer infectious to others. This means we could potentially stop HIV transmission and avoid new infections by diagnosing people earlier and starting them immediately on treatment.”

SOUTHWARK’S NEW ‘clinical champion’ for HIV has pledged to make GP testing for the virus “a priority”, following a new study suggesting HIV tests for new patients in high prevalence areas could save money and prolong lives.

Southwark has the second highest prevalence of HIV nationally and there are an estimated 560 people who are yet to be diagnosed in the borough. In 2014, 190 patients were newly diagnosed with HIV, of whom 74 were diagnosed at a late stage of infection.

CANNABIS FACTORY FOUND IN POLICE RAID

A CANNABIS factory with 50 plants was discovered during a police raid at an estate in Bermondsey, writes Chiara Giordano...

Officers from South Bermondsey Safer Neighbourhood Team were alerted to an address believed to be growing cannabis by members of the public while at the Avondale Estate at about 9am on Monday, August 14.

Acting Police Sergeant Kev Webster posted officers at the property while he travelled to Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court to obtain a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

“The warrant was executed within an hour of the warrant being issued and a large quantity of cannabis was found inside the address – approximately 50 plants – as well as a large amount of hydroponic/ electrical equipment used for the purpose of cultivating cannabis,” he told the News.

The team of officers had been conducting enquiries at the estate in partnership with other Southwark safer neighbourhood teams and City Of London Corporation.

No arrests have been made and South Bermondsey Safer Neighbourhood Team’s enquiries continue.

MP COYLE WANTS MORE POLICE POWERS FOR MOPED CRIME SOUTHWARK

AN MP has vowed to fight for greater police powers and resources to tackle moped crime after witnessing its prevalence in Southwark.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle joined an emergency response team on the borough’s streets – and was shocked at the number of call outs to moped-related crime.

He said a “huge part of the problem” was the fact officers are unable to chase suspects on mopeds if they are not wearing a helmet and promised to campaign to change this.

“If they were a helmet or not, if they come off or not, that is the risk they chose – not the police,” he told the News.

“When someone commits a crime on a moped they are taking that risk and the police should not be prevented from chasing and trying to catch them.”

“They [the officers] are constantly monitoring their radios, and the amount of times you hear what the incident is and that they are not allowed to pursue.

“Those who want to cause problems have learnt the limitations of police capacity and powers and that has to change because their safety has been put above the needs of the police and the public.

“They are getting away with it and the police know it, the public knows it, and

Commander Julian Bennett and Chief Superintendent Victor Olisa, director of the Met’s strategic diversity and inclusion unit, showed their respects, as did historian Stephen Bourne.

“It was just to honour him because it has become clear with the passage of time that black Britons from history have been overlooked and forgotten but for him to rise to superintendent of Southwark is quite extraordinary and quite unusual,” Mr Bourne told the News.

“It was a beautiful service and couldn’t have been done with more respect and remembrance for this officer. In the village they are really proud to know that he existed.”

POLICE SAY reports of men hiding in bushes in Southwark Park could be a “hoax”.

Last week, the News revealed a Facebook post warning of men “hiding in bushes” and “trying to entice children” in the park had been shared dozens of times.

“Multiple men have been seen hiding in the bushes at Southwark Park trying to entice children to go with them, and asking if their parents are around,” the post stated.

Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhoods Team later told the News it was aware of the Facebook posts, and that they were thought to be hoax.

“Police have had no calls to men hiding in bushes in Southwark Park – only one call from someone wishing to report what they had read on Facebook,” a member of the team told the News.

“The Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhood Team regularly patrol Southwark Park and have seen no suspicious activity of this nature.”

The Rotherhithe SNT Twitter account also tweeted: “Team aware of recent Facebook rumours re: Southwark Park – possible hoax.

“No calls to police of this nature. We patrol the park regularly.”

OFFICERS GATHERED to pay tribute at the graveside of the Metropolitan Police’s first mixed-race superintendent.

Robert Branford, who served in the Met from 1838-56, is thought to have been the service’s first mixedrace officer.

He was stationed at the former Stones End police station, in Borough, when he was recruited into the Met on September 14, 1838.

The police officer rose through the ranks to become sergeant in 1846, then inspector in 1851, and superintendent of M-Division (Southwark) in 1856.

Census records show that he and his wife Sarah lived in Weston Place, Bermondsey, and shared a house in Rotherhithe with another local bobby.

They later moved to Brunswick Street, in Newington – now the site of Falmouth Road – before Branford retired in 1866.

Branford’s story was unearthed by Southwark historian Stephen Bourne, after he discovered a brief reference to him in a book called The Great British Bobby by Clive Emsley, published in 2009.

He is referred to as ‘half-caste’ by Emsley – a term used by former Met Chief Inspector Timothy Cavanagh to describe the officer in his 1893 book,

Scotland Yard Past and Present.

Cavanagh’s short account of Branford reads: “Not an educated man: but what to my idea was of much greater importance, he possessed a thorough knowledge of police matters in general.

“I should say he was about the only half-caste superintendent officer the Met ever had.”

Mr Bourne said he discovered Branford’s service number was 14153, that he was 5ft 11ins tall, and that he was born in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, on May 6, 1817, through the Met Police Heritage Centre’s records.

MILLWALL HAS honoured four of its fans caught up in the London Bridge terror attack.

The group of fans, which included ‘Lion of London Bridge’ Roy Larner, were VIP guests during Millwall’s clash with Bolton at the Den on Saturday.

Mr Larner was branded a hero after it emerged he shouted “f*** you, I’m Millwall” while fending off three terrorists during the June 3 attack.

Mr Larner said he was “thrilled” to be a VIP guest alongside Darren Kenny, Gerard Vowls, and another Millwall fan in the chairman’s suite.

Bermondsey-born black cab driver Darren Kenny, who ferried terrified people away to safety after the terrorists struck, praised the club ahead of the match and said he was “really looking forward” to what would be a “memorable day”.

“Millwall and in particular Micky Simpson (fan on the board) have been fantastic from the moment they found out I was caught up in the attack,” he told the News.

“They arranged for a private tour of the ground for myself and my son Harry, which was given by Millwall legend Jimmy Carter.

“CEO Steve Kavanagh came and met us as well. The club have truly shown that they look after their fans and care about the local community.”

Gerard Vowls, another fan honoured on Saturday, was hailed a hero after he pelted the terrorists with bottles and pint glasses during the attack.

Millwall chief executive Steve Kavanagh said after the match: “I would like to thank each and every member of the fan base and indeed all staff who were at The Den for

contributing to what was a very moving standing ovation for the four of them before kick-off last Saturday.

“Micky Simpson, our fan on the board, has been brilliant in offering his continued support for the quartet since the horrific events at London Bridge and Borough Market and it was an honour, on behalf of the board, to have them all as our VIP guests for the Bolton game.

“The EFL were very generous in

commissioning four additional League One Play-Off winners’ medals which were part of everything that was presented on the day.

“What we saw pitchside was a very special moment and I’m sure Darren, Gerard, Roy and Grant will never forget that experience.”

Mr Larner told the News he had apologised after a video emerged of him allegedly shouting racial abuse at a black photographer in Elephant

and Castle months before the terrorist incident. He has agreed to attend the Lions’ anti-discrimination Millwall For All workshop.

He maintains that he is not racist and has apologised for any offence his comments caused.

“I’ve been doing two-hour sessions every Friday for three weeks now – it’s interesting,” he said.

“It will help with all sorts of things, including diversity and anger issues.

“At the end of the day I haven’t

been charged with anything; it’s been blown out of proportion.

“I apologise if I did upset anyone by saying anything. I’m not racist.”

Eight people lost their lives in the June 3 attack after three terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before jumping out and stabbing people in Borough Market.

The market was closed for eleven days while a police investigation took place.

End to Coal Line dispute in sight?

A CONFLICT between the Peckham Coal Line project and a property developer could be settled, thanks to “constructive” talks between the two sides.

It was reported in July that the Coal Line – which aims to build a 1km walking route with gardens beside the train tracks between Peckham Rye and Queen’s Road stations – could be under threat from a rival planning application to build nine houses.

Its project leader, Nick Woodford, mounted a campaign to halt the planning application by Bluecroft Properties,

fearing the new mini estate between Gordon Road and Consort Road would interfere with the Coal Line and “scupper the whole project”.

But Nick has told the News that three meetings have since taken place between his team and Bluecroft to find a compromise.

Nick said: “Had this [Bluecroft’s original plans] gone ahead, it could have de-railed the whole thing because of the viability problems, and because that particularly bit of the Coal Line was already going to be tricky and expensive to do.”

His main complaint about Bluecroft’s original proposals for the new homes were that the passage would be turned

into a private road, blocking his team’s ambitions for the space to become a “welcoming” “car free” route for cyclists and pedestrians.

“We also hoped they would be more ambitious, and make use of the existing building, which was the really popular Old Spike. We hoped what they build could be something mixed-use and with more affordable homes,” he said. “[Bluecroft] have spoken to Southwark Council, and most recently they’ve come back with some different options. It’s given us an idea of what and would not be possible.”

“We’re still some distance apart, but we are moving forward in the right direction, especially with concerns about the road

and accessibility for the public.

“What we hope for is to get to a point where we can say ‘we back this option’, but we’re not there yet.”

He added that Southwark Council has delayed making a planning decision on Bluecroft’s original proposals, and that further public consultations are due to take place at the end of the year.

Tom Mulligan, director at Bluecroft Property said: “Following the concerns

that were raised locally about some elements of our planning application, we have met with the Peckham Coal Line team a number of times to better understand their aspirations for the local area. We are currently looking at a number of different options for the site and look forward to presenting our updated plans to the local community.”

Over £100,000 was crowdfunded for the Coal Line in November 2015.

N 2012 Desreen Brooks was walking in Hampstead with her husband Ben Brooks-Dutton and her two-year- old son Jackson when a driver mounted the pavement and killed her.

The driver, aged 82, had mistaken the accelerator for the break and was driving at 54mph in a 20mph zone.

He was convicted of causing Desreen’s death by dangerous driving and in sentencing him the judge said “an elderly driver who knows, or should acknowledge, that he or she is losing his or her faculties is no less a danger than a drunken driver who knows the same.”

Desreen’s widower Ben and son Jackson now live in my constituency and Ben has asked me to take up the issue of making our roads safe from drivers who are unfit to drive through ageing.

Currently there is no upper age limit for a driving licence. But once you reach the age of 70 you have to fill in a self-assessment form every 3 years in order to renew your licence. This means the responsibility is on the older person themselves to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of any medical impairment which may affect their driving. If there’s only a gradual change you might not notice it yourself. And some people, even where they are aware of changes, don’t want to face up to them if it means giving up driving.

With increasing numbers of drivers and a growing number of elderly and very elderly people, this is a road safety issue which must be addressed. According to the DVLA more than 1.2million people over 80 hold a UK driving licence and the number of people aged over 90 holding a driving licence is, for the first time, over 100,000.

I think there’s a simple way to deal with this. Already, when you are over 75 you have a named GP and are entitled to an annual health check. It would be simple and straightforward for anyone over the age of 75 to have to get their GP, at their annual health check, to certify whether they are still fit to drive. And without the annual recertification by the GP – who will have checked their eyesight as well – they would not be able to renew their driving licence.

For many older people driving is an important way of maintaining independence so we mustn’t prevent people from driving on the basis of their age alone. It’s about their capabilities.

I have asked the new Chair of Parliament’s Transport Select Committee Lilian Greenwood MP to conduct an inquiry into older drivers and have proposed a requirement for fitness certification of older drivers and I am urging the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling MP to do the same.

No one wants to make life harder for older people. And in less than 10 years’ time I will be over 75 myself. But we have to recognise that ageing can impair faculties and must keep our roads safe. And at the same time we should improve public transport in all areas and cut fares for older people.

Air pollution and speed humps

HINDSIGHT IS a wonderful thing!

Nearly ten years ago, on this page, my very good friend Les Alden, now living in the countryside, revealed that tests have proved that air pollution increased tenfold when vehicles slowed down going over speed humps, as motorists have to keep putting their foot on the accelerator.

This all fell on deaf ears. Now it is official, and there are serious plans to remove speed humps to improve our health.

People thought that by having speed humps in their streets and roads, it would make things a lot quieter.

Young tearaways will always be young tearaways, and white vans and lorries exhaust pipes are higher than cars, no problem there for them. So waste of money really.

Health and Safety not happy, but obviously will not win re the health issue. Regard safety, it is actually more dangerous driving now going over speed humps in even little roads and streets, with all the afore mentioned Please do not tell me of the pitfalls of children playing in the roads. How many years ago did you see small children playing in the streets, for obvious reasons?

Cars are a necessary evil for many people.

Sitting in a car going over humps is living hell for many frail and elderly people, and those with various health issues. Because they are old, should they sit at home looking at four walls!

On this, the police, fire brigade and ambulance services agree with me that there are far too many speed humps!

Immigrants are not to blame for NHS strain

IN HIS letter Southwark News 3rd August, 2017, Reg O’Donoghue is right to highlight the great strain placed on housing, transport and the NHS. He is completely wrong, however, to blame immigrants for the pressure on public services.

Immigrants are net contributors to the UK economy.

What’s more, recent arrivals from

the EU and further afield are a vital part of the public sector workforce, particularly here in Southwark.

Immigrants are indispensable to our borough’s economy as well as its cultural vibrancy, and should be celebrated as such.

At last month’s Council Assembly, local councillors, taking a clear lead from the Mayor of London, declared that “Southwark is open.” I for one hope that we will continue to follow the Mayor’s leadership on the subject.

Most recently he encouraged people to campaign for a second referendum on the final Brexit deal.

Mr O’Donoghue can complain about “this lot in Brussels” all he wants – even if Guy Verhofstadt might not be the most avid reader of the Southwark News letters pages.

But EU negotiators are free to express their views, just as Mr O’Donoghue is free to express his.

By the same token, those of us who believe Brexit would be culturally and economically calamitous will continue to seek to stop it from happening.

Forget “Hard”, “Soft”, “Clean” or “Green” Brexits. The best option for this borough, this city and this country is also the simplest: No Brexit.

Healthwatch on care homes

RESPONDING TO a new study

by Healthwatch on people’s experiences of care homes, Councils want to see everyone receive high quality care and for care homes to be of a high standard that meet people’s needs, going beyond simply getting washed and dressed but living as independent and fulfilling a life as possible.

While it is clear that in some places, there is work to be done and areas for improvement, it is encouraging to note that most people have said the care they receive is good.

The recent Care Quality Commission report also found that the majority of care provided for adults is rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

Councils, as commissioners, work closely with providers who deliver services to ensure both the availability of high quality care and continuous improvement.

But this study is yet another reminder of the stark reality of the

funding crisis facing adult social care, and the urgent need to bring desperately needed stability to the provider market.

While the £2 billion announced in the Spring Budget for social care was a step in the right direction, it is only one-off funding and social care services still face an annual £2.3 billion funding gap by 2020.

It is absolutely critical that the Government brings forward its consultation for social care announced in the Queen’s Speech, and that it works with local government leaders in delivering a long-term sustainable solution for social care.

This must address the issue of longterm funding, but it must also create the conditions necessary to ensure the development of the right kind of care and support services.

A summer picnic

NOW THAT the summer holidays are here, parents (and grandparents) everywhere are hunting out activities to keep the children occupied – me included!

Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity has launched a fun, simple, summer activity called the Summertime Picnic.

The idea is straightforward - host a picnic and ask friends and family to make a donation to Rainbow Trust. It can be a picnic in the garden, the park or even inside on a carpet, weather depending.

HE LAST of the summer months can be hot and humid but August seems more like autumn.

Temperatures have been cool, with strong westerly winds and occasional torrential downpours. August work continues with pruning the spring and summer flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus, Lavender, and Honeysuckle once they have finished flowering. To keep Lavender bushes from becoming woody with top heavy foliage cut down the flower stems after the blooms have finished. These can be dried in small bunches – the summery floral aroma will last many months.

As summer begins to slip away – it is time to think about ordering bulbs for spring displays. Daffodils (Narcissus) are popular and there are many different types to choose from; the dwarf ones which are more suited to window boxes/tubs such as the fragrant N. Cheerfulness, or N. ‘Jack Snipe’ and N. ‘Little Beauty’. The larger Daffodils – like N. ‘Cassata’ and N. ‘Fortune’ are for the borders and lovely to grow for cut flowers; once planted they will naturalise and appear each year. Scilla is another spring flowering plant - the dwarf variety S. Sibirica produces startlingly deep blue flowers, it tolerates semi shade and is apparently squirrel proof!

There are still numerous plants to enjoy in the late summer garden such as the bright, cheerful giant Sunflowers. Summer bedding plants – geraniums and petunias continue to give showy displays in window boxes and hanging baskets.

Fuchsias have produced exceptional flower displays this season. The Calendula or ‘pot marigold’ is a modest summer annual - with its bright orange or golden yellow flowers; grown in large clumps it’s always impressive and a delight to see.

Calendula also has hidden talents - it is a medicinal plant and probably one of the most useful in the herbalist’s dispensary.

Calendula is described as an antiinflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral – and used to treat a range of conditions from inflamed mucous membranes, gastric ulcers to poorly healing wounds, burns, eczema, and acne; Calendula is often found in herbal skin creams. The plant can cause an allergic reaction although rare, but should not be used to treat illness except under the guidance of a qualified herbalist.

Sow seeds for the hardier salad plants such as lamb’s lettuce, Winter density and Lettuce Veneziana to ensure an early supply of tasty leaves; grow these plants in containers and window boxes as a change from the usual ornamentals.

Increase stocks of herb plants for next year - take 4” cuttings of Rosemary, Lavender, Hyssop and Mint. Remove lower leaves (up to about an inch), place cuttings in sandy soil in containers or directly in open sheltered ground, provide some covering (a cloche) to protect from sun and wind (otherwise the cuttings will dry out and are likely to fail). Keep the soil moist and mist leaves every other day.

Grimm not grim Educational holidays I’VE JUST found out that most children of my acquaintance know all about Horrible Histories and have been learning all about our horrible past from the Horrible Histories TV show that broadcasts knowledge on whipping, beheading, torture, poo, vomit and wee; hence an army of excited kids at the Monday Matinee of Horrible Histories - Barmy Britain for the latest theatrical outing of said programme.

HANSEL AND Gretel is one of those universal tales that we all think we know from the snippets we get from children’s book, cartoons and films, writes Matt Baker....

But, along with much of the material collected by the Brothers Grimm, it is a deeply disturbing and strange narrative steeped in Eastern European traditions unfamiliar to those raised on the western shores of the continent. For those of us wishing to delve deeper in to the darker cultural traditions of our neighbouring collection of nations, a great place to start would be St Paul’s Actors Church in Covent Garden.

The immersive production presented by Iris Theatre really is a fantastic effort, and was thoroughly enjoyable, even if somewhat chilly due to the unseasonable weather ruining yet another summer across our green and pleasant land. The action moves about the grounds of the church, utilising different sets to take us on the fateful journey into the

underworld undertaken by our young heroes. This version stays far closer to the original folk tales, and as such is quite gruesome.

However, amongst the bloodshed and murder there is comedy aplenty, with a stand out performance by Josie Brightwell in her roles as Mother, Baba Yaga Korizima and Baba Yaga Martzanna. Her songs were truly fantastic and a great highlight. Another performance worthy of note was the excellent Jennifer Clement who also was a delight.

The piece weaves its dark way through to its climax with the audience following the players around and being part of the action.

A real treat for children (8+) and adults, with plenty for all age groups.

Definitely recommended for a great summer night in the city.

Having been out of school for so long I had forgotten quite a lot of the history taught to me, so it was great fun catching up on Charles II and the Restoration - ‘restoring’ fun back into Britain after the Puritans reign was brought to an end; learning that it was an offence to wear gold and purple

Gaza art in OXO

School art for Tower Bridge I WAS escorted up to meet with Tower Bridge’s very first Artist in Residence Alex Evans and taken into what his young charges from Boutcher Primary School call his ‘Secret lair’, writes Michael Holland...

And it is very secret because it is on a floor that the lift never stops at during the bridge tours, hidden away halfway up the south tower, The artist let me look around at his sketches and at the collaborative work he and the Boutcher children had created as he told me of his love of the bridge and his tenure there. His great grandfather directed traffic whenever the bridge had to open; he worked at London Bubble Theatre and would always go to the Rotherhithe riverside to look at the bridge in his breaks. He spoke of how,

when everyone has gone home and he is alone high up on the walkways, he likes to sit watching the sun set in the west. ‘I feel like the bridge is my home at times like that,’he says.

Alex demonstrated how he used two mirrors at a 45° angle to create a kaleidoscope effect on the schoolchildren’s work, which was then photographed and enlarged to be hung on the West Walkway. The art is placed in lightboxes to add another effect.

As well as the community aspect of his residency there is Beauty and the Bridge, the artist’s artistic exploration of Tower Bridge, from the ornamental patterns in its structure to the microscopic elements of the lichen that has formed on the stone towers and turrets: intricate, detailed work both up

clothes, and a recap on the history of the names of towns. We even sung a song about it!

Myself and my young charge Haydn(Who has read all the books) had a pasta lunch just before the show. So when the merriment began and we were given a rundown on a rancid Roman fish gut delicacy, I was pleased to report it was not on the menu in Bella Italia! I am very pleased that Italian cuisine has moved on…

Horrible Histories really is a show for all ages. The smallest and youngest kids were giggling away at the fart jokes, while us older, big kids were enjoying remembering all the stuff that we had forgotten.

With the school holidays quickly

burning up things to do for bored kids, this can be added to the to-do list.

For artists creating in their bedrooms, tiny studios and on the canvases of walls and rubble, their visions reflect a transient moment in history. The work speaks as eloquently as any news report, essay or academic journal. Yet it only exists for the

blink of an eye in a historical timeline.

The artwork is being created for historical documentation, as a cry for recognition, as an escape for the creator from the conditions they find themselves, and indeed, for their emotional survival; the need to feed the creative beast that lives within the body and mind of all those with a passionate need to communicate.

Specifically, for the OXO Courtyard, visitors will find eight individual architectural structures. Here visitors will be able to find the work of individual artists along with a videos documenting the conditions under which the work was created. Over the course of the ten day installation there will be live two-way discussions where questions can be asked directly to the artists who were not able to leave Gaza, the result of the territory’s closure.

FROM INSIDE the blockade of Gaza to the OXO Tower Courtyard, Art Under Siege tells the story of Gaza artists, writers and performers caught in a conflict not of their making, today living in limbo with an unknown future.

It is a story told with original artworks, words, photography, and video, all merged into an architecturally selfcontained installation designed to involve viewers, physically, intellectually and emotionally, bringing them immediately into the story.

In Gaza the walls tell no lies. As one walks the streets there is a barrage of images. These tell a contemporary history. A history that is fragile and

close and as far away as a view from London Bridge.

This main exhibition consists of 2D drawings, digital prints, laser etchings and 3D pieces in Portland Stone, one of the key materials used in the construction of the bridge.

From talking to Alex it is obvious how much he loves Tower Bridge and the time he has spent working on, in and with the bridge. It felt to me as if he was definitely the right man for the job and I know he will be sad to leave when his one year his up.

Beauty and the Bridge is on at Tower Bridge until autumn 2017 and is part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition. Times: 10am - 5.30pm.

‘Their blood stained the stone flags...’

WALWORTH’S ST PETER’S Church sits proudly in Walworth, but its past shows the even prouder part it played in the area’s Blitz spirit.

The church was badly damaged on October 29, 1940, when two bombs directly hit the crypt where hundreds of people were sheltering. Eighty-four people were killed and around 250 seriously injured.

Beiing filmed for a three-part series for a BBC documentary in 20912 Lilie Mercer, than aged 101-year-old remembered that fateful night. The Walworth girl lived around East Street all her life.

“At the end of Dawes Street there was a little general shop that sold everything.

The family that came out of there, they was Italians. She made the bridesmaids’ dresses for my first husband’s sister,” she said.

“When we found out the crypt had been hit, we knew the Italian family was taking refuge there. The whole family was wiped out.

“I was in an Anderson Shelter in Dawes Street when the raids came over.

Of course we were bombed, and something hit that door where I was sitting. When they looked it must have been a shell. I should have kept it as a souvenir!

“Eventually, rescuers came and got us out, and they said they didn’t even know we were there.”

“It was frightening. You didn’t know when you came out what you was goin’ to see. Some places was knocked down, some people was killed. You never knew til afterwards.”

Whole families, including many children and elderly, were killed and wounded when the crypt was hit.

Father John G. Markham, Rector of Walworth during the Blitz, gives a detailed description of the night in his memoirs.

He wrote: “The crypt shelter was full, even before the warning. Everybody had their usual settling down period perhaps a few songs, families talking, eating the food they brought with them, before they lay down to get some sleep in their usual places, on improvised bedding, deck chairs and even on the bare stone floor.

“Jenner and I returned to the Post, and then decided that we would make a circuit of the area, to contact the wardens on patrol, whom we had not been able to see for several hours. As usual, we mounted out blitz bikes, brakeless, lampless, and started off down the street alongside the churchyard.

“We heard the explosions of one or two bombs in the distance, and carried out our usual drill - falling off the bikes without stopping. As we hit the ground, five bombs exploded around us, so that we could see the orange flashes; two in the churchyard beyond the church, two others, as it turned out in the church and one in the garden of one of the small houses beside us, throwing some of the dirt on us as we sprawled in the gutter.

“Then I head a dull confused murmer from the crypt, and a dusty figure struggled among the sandbags in the doorway at the foot of the steps, leading the shelter, crying ‘Help’.”

Father Markham, his wife and all ablebodied survivors worked tirelessly through the night to rescue the many injured from the devastation. He remembers the grief and shock felt by the community at the terrible sight of so many dead amongst the rumble.

“Dawn and the ‘All Clear’ wailing of the sirens found us very weary,

particularly my wardens, many of whom had plunged into the work of extracting the injured from the tangle of debris and darkness of the crypt,” he wrote.

“Inevitably, those who had been down amongst it all were suffering from shock, as were the whole neighbourhood, when they came out of

their shelters, checked up on their friends and relatives, many of whom were in the crypt.

“There was a shocked feeling about, heightened by the belief that many had cherished, that the crypt was a safe shelter – an illusion which I had never shared.

“In the morning there were 35

stretchers of the remains waiting in the vans. Their blood stained the stone flags: I was glad that I was able within a week to establish our altar later on that very spot, where we offered the sacrifice of our worship and prayer for them and ourselves, and all the world, during the following years.

“I shall always remember them.”

Honor Oak’s Turkish delight

Parking was easy and I soon found Hattush the restaurant of Sezar Ugur Soy, a big pop star in his native Turkey but ended up in SE London after he fell in love with a London girl, who is now his wife.

I was there to lunch with legendary Performance Artist, Rene, to discuss projects and to catch up, so it was a pleasure to find that Hattush is a very smart place, which Sezar took pride in, talking us round the decor and his plans for a basement cinema in the coming months.

Over coffee we heard about Sezar’s life, his loves, his hopes and dreams.

He told of his Friday night belly dancers and how he gets up to sing a medley of his most famous songs to his customers at the weekend. But enough of Sezar’s pop star lifestyle, we were here to sample Turkish food and drink and I want to say now that Sezar was the perfect host; he made sure we had the best of what Hattush - and Turkey - has to offer.

A platter of Cold Meze Starter was laid before us, a good mix of all the regular favourites. It was huge and could have fed four people, so Rene and I made sure we just had a taste of

Chicken Sarma Beyti. This was grilled chicken wrapped in flatbread, sliced, with a flavoured yoghurt sauce. Once again the portion was enormous. The fish dish was Seafood Charcoal: grilled salmon and king prawns with salad and potatoes. Far too much for us to eat, never mind one person. Both dishes were well presented and well cooked.

What more could you ask for? I also had a glass of Doluca, the house white, a Turkish wine that would rival any New World chardonnay I’ve had.

Sezar regaled us with tales of local stars who eat at Hattush and delighted us with an anecdote about Gordon Ramsay who belied his TV persona by doing something really nice for

Hattush is definitely one to try for authentic Turkish food and top notch music and dancing each in order to not be full up too early. It looked good and each different dish had it’s own unique taste. For me the highlight was the Şakşuka where the taste of the aubergine came powering through.

Next we were brought a Hot Meze Starter and, again, it was all good,

although we both agreed that the Kalamari rose above good into the realms of very special.

Turkish Efes beers were the perfect accompaniment for our starters.

On Sezar’s suggestions we opted for meat and fish dishes as our main courses, to share. We had the

Sezar, then he offered Turkish coffee, which me and Rene thought was a good idea, and Baklava, which we weren't too keen on. But there was another item on the dessert menu that I was intrigued by. It was subtitled as shredded wheat with cheese, topped with syrup and walnuts, and went by the name of Kunefe. When in Istanbul do as the Istanbullians do, I say, so we got a portion of Kunefe with two spoons.

It was different but actually a really good ending to our Turkish feast. In fact, we were fighting over the crispy bits!

Hattush is definitely one to try for authentic Turkish food and top notch music and dancing.

Faal pounces as Hamlet come up smelling of Roses Lionesses

A SENSATIONAL finish at the Harlow Arena on Tuesday night saw Dulwich Hamlet recover from the jaws of defeat to seal a pulsating 3-2 win for their first three points of the season.

AFTER THEIR fine opening-day win, Stansfeld were quickly brought back down to earth with this crushing 5-1 defeat at local rivals Meridian VP last weekend.

The game was end-to-end in the first half hour with both teams having chances but neither keeper being tested.

In the 31st minute, a scramble in the Stansfeld box ended with Tulani Pama stabbing the ball home from close range.

Meridian doubled their lead just before half time when Thierry Fotoso connected with a cross and put the ball in the bottom corner.

After the break, Stansfeld upped their effort and work rate and in the 60th minute they halved the lead when Sam Ryan followed up a Michael McKenna shot and fired into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Charlie Dickens missed an effort for Harlow before Kargbo found Ashley Carew, but the midfielder delayed releasing Sanchez Ming, who missed the target.

Hamlet were struggling at defensive set-pieces, and Harlow went in front on 30 minutes, Read left completely free to finish past Edwards.

Dulwich almost equalised just before half-time, only for Nyren Clunis’ effort to hit the post.

Rose sent his side back out with ten minutes still remaining of the halftime break, and his players responded by pressing for an equlaiser, but Clunis again fired over.

Gavin Rose’s side were heading for defeat with just six minutes left, before Muhammudu Faal made it 2-2 and the same player snatched a dramatic victory with a last-minute winner.

Ibrahim Kargbo had given Hamlet the lead in the second minute, before Harlow’s’s Syrus Gordon levelled the game seven minutes later.

The home side went 2-1 up through Alex Read after half an hour, and that’s the way it stayed until Faal’s decisive late contributions.

It was Hamlet’s first win of the season in their second game, after they drew 1-1 at home with Staines Town last weekend.

It has been a positive start for Hamlet, who are showing no signs of any lingering disappointment after they missed out in the Isthmian League Premier Division play-offs last season.

That’s credit to Rose, and the way his side fought back on Tuesday night indicates they possess the fighting qualities to mount a real promotion challenge this season.

They enjoyed the perfect start on Tuesday night when Harlow only half-cleared a corner from Gavin Tomlin following Patrick Lee’s save, and Kargbo was there to lob the goalkeeper from a tricky angle.

Harlow responded by putting their opponents under concerted pressure, and made it 1-1 in the ninth minute when the Hamlet defence failed to deal with a cross and Gordon fired his effort past Preston Edwards into the top corner.

Rose had seen enough, and he brought on Nathan Ferguson, Rickie Hayles and Faal as his side went all out to try to get something from a game that was slipping away from them. .

It was an inspired tactical intervention. In the 84th minute, Tomlin’s corner was headed towards goal by Anthony Acheampong, and,

though Lee saved initially, he only pushed the ball out to Faal, who headed home.

It took a well-timed tackle from Kargbo to prevent Harlow going back in front, before Edwards produced a superb save with a minute left, and it was all the more impressive as he saw a rising drive late through a crowd.

There was still time for Hamlet to launch one more attack. In the final minute, Clunis picked up the ball in midfield and drove forward before releasing Faal into space behind the defence. He took a couple of touches before keeping his composure and beating Lee. It was harsh on the goalkeeper and on his side, but Hamlet won’t care as they get their season properly up and running.

A TOP-order batting collapse saw Dulwich go down to defeat by three wickets in a low-scoring Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at home to Chessington.

Skipper Dan Yarnley removed Bancroft with his second ball and bowled his ten overs straight through for just ten runs.

Luke Barnard dismissed Waqar and Leon Sealy while conceding just 28 runs off his ten. Jon Lodwick and Patrick George thus came together at 68-8 in the 31st over.

Both defended resolutely, with Lodwick scoring just one run off his first 32 balls before going on the attack. George gave him solid support for 46 balls for six. The pair had added 37 for the ninth wicket when George was bowled by Qazi.

James Bridgland fell to Singh five balls later to leave Lodwick stranded on 30, off 61 balls. Dulwich were all out for 108 in the 46th over.

The Chessington batsmen didn’t find scoring any easier, and Lodwick and Sealy each picked up an early wicket to reduce them to 15-2 after five overs.

Bridgland joined the attack for the thirteenth over, and maintained his record of taking a wicket in his first over, but had to come off after that one over due to injury.

Rob Edmond and Karl Thorns thus came together with the score on 34-3, and

Thorns went on the attack against George and Waqar to add 30 for the fourth wicket in just 4.1 overs.

Waqar had his revenge, removing Edmond for 20 and Matt Alldis for five to make it 70-5.

Thorns and Qazi added eighteen before Sealy returned to dismiss Thorns for 29, and Waqar had Adam Lawrence stumped without scoring in the next over to make it 90-7.

The match seemed to hang in the balance, but Yarnley had held himself back to number nine, and after playing himself in for nine balls he hit four fours off Sealy’s tenth over to see his side home by three wickets.

Dulwich take just two points from this match. They remain in seventh place, but are now level on points with Dorking and are just ten ahead of ninth-placed Epsom.

Next week they have a crucial home match against bottom club Bank of England, and will be looking to avenge their defeat in the first match between the sides.

FISHER ENDURED a difficult first afternoon in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division as they lost 2-0 at Kent Football United.

Thomas Pratt put his side ahead in the first half before KFU withstood some late Fisher pressure and added a second in the 90th minute through Daryl Dylan.

Fisher are at home to Punjab United this Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

SHANE FERGUSON joined the Millwall 100 club recently – and put it down to the sports science team keeping him out of the treatment room.

Ferguson, 26, has made more appearances in just over two years since he joined Millwall from Newcastle than he had in his entire career to then.

Ferguson hit the 100-mark against Stevenage in the EFL Cup, a run of consistency in marked contrast to his last season as a Magpies player, when he played just two club games on loan at Glasgow Rangers.

“I didn’t realise until afterwards and it was a nice gesture from the club putting it on Twitter saying I’d got to 100 appearances,” he said.

“I’ve loved my time here and it’s crazy how may games I’ve played in the last two years.

“Before I came here I had almost a year out from one injury. It’s great for me and I think I’ve proved myself as a player as well.

“Playing consistently and looking after yourself is key. The sports science team we have here are great as well, they keep you away from the treatment room.”

Ferguson was joined at the club this summer by his Northern Ireland

international team-mate Conor McLaughlin.

McLaughlin revealed after signing for Millwall that Ferguson’s account of his experiences in south London was one of the factors that convinced him to move from the north of

England, where he had spent the majority of his career with Preston and Fleetwood.

Ferguson explained: “We were on international duty and he was asking me about the club. I was telling him only good stuff, like how good the

MILLWALL’S MAIN aim this season is survival, according to Shane Ferguson.

The Lions picked up their first point back in the Championship when they drew 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, but it could and should have been so much more.

Millwall dominated the game, with George Saville outstanding in midfield driving his side on, and it was the former Wolves player who opened the scoring with his first goal in his third Lions spell.

It was an excellent Millwall move, Steve Morison clipping the ball into the box and Lee Gregory laying it off to Saville, who still had a bit to do before

beating Mark Howard as Mark Beevers just failed to block the shot.

But, just 13 minutes later, Shaun Hutchinson gave away a free-kick on the edge of the box and Bolton substitute Filipe Morais curled superbly past Jordan Archer just inside the left-hand post.

“The chances they got they were more clinical,” Ferguson said. “It’s harsh because you’re dominating the game and they get one chance and they take it.

That’s the way it is sometimes and it shows the quality we’re up against this season.

“We know that and need to keep working hard to try to prevent those things from happening.

“It’s going to be a long season and there will be ups and downs. We’ll stick together like we’ve done in the last couple of years.

“The main aim is survival, it doesn’t matter where we finish as long as we stay

up. If we do that we can build a platform from there. It’s going to be difficult because a lot of teams have spent a lot of money. But we’ve got a great team here, the togetherness and team spirit is probably one of the best.”

Morison had two chances to win the game for Millwall, but was twice denied by former team-mate Beevers, who was superb.

“We’ve looked back at the amount of chances that we’ve created and it’s great

lads are and the fans.

“I told him he’d be a big addition to the team and as you’ve seen so far he’s been great.

“He’s got his family as well and asked me about London. He came from up north like I did. I told him

to know we can compete in this league,” Ferguson said.

“On other days we might not play as well and score but we need to keep plugging away.

“It was the same last year. We did really well when we played against the Premier League teams, we just seem to play well when we’re the underdogs.

“We like to prove teams wrong and some teams get a surprise when they

London was a great place to live, there’s so much to do. It’s only a short train journey north as well if you want to visit friends.

“I said to him it was a great opportunity to play in the Championship and I think he’s made the right decision.

“It is nerve-wracking coming to a new club. You want to do really well for the team that you’re joining. But the likes of Conor has settled in really well.

“We’re really close as a team. We go out for meals together, we socialise together.

“Every position you’ve got someone else up against you. It’s very competitive and that drives you on every day because players want to play every game.”

Ferguson has been impressed with Millwall’s transfer business in general this summer, highlighting the performances of George Saville, who joined from Wolves following a successful loan spell with the Lions in 2015-16.

“We saw it in pre-season when the new signings came in it went up another level,” Ferguson said. “The new boys have been great. They’re a good bunch of lads, they’ve settled in well and that’s helped us as well.

“George went back to Wolves from us and did really well. He was a great signing for us and has shown what a great player he is.

“He’s been brilliant this season so far and hopefully he can continue that.”

Former Charlton caretaker: ‘I want to help players be the future of Millwall’

MILLWALL’S NEW under-23 boss Kevin Nugent revealed it was the club’s dedication to nurturing young players that attracted him to the role.

Former Charlton caretaker Nugent, 48, was appointed Elite Development Squad manager earlier this month, and began his tenure with a 4-0 win over Huddersfield in the opening league game on Monday.

Nugent, who had a spell in charge at Barnet last season, is relishing the challenge of helping develop players with a view to seeing them break into Neil Harris’ first team.

“I know [academy boss] Scott Fitzgerald, and I just felt I wanted to come into a job at a football club that was stable, where they promote the young players,” former Cardiff and Swansea striker Nugent explained.

“I know the manager here wants to do that – if they’re good enough.

“Neil is a really, really good manager, he has good staff around him, and it’s enjoyable driving into work every day. I’m working with some really good people.

“There’s a certain level of pressure, but it’s a different type of pressure.

Everyone wants players to come

through.

“With Millwall getting promoted to the Championship the manager has made some very, very good signings.

It’s going to be tough for players to get in but my challenge to them is that they have to up their game.

“The Championship is a tough league and with the recruitment this summer theses lads are maybe going to have to bide their time.

“The standards have gone to another level and the young lads have to make sure they match those standards.”

After taking temporary charge last November following Russell Slade’s sacking, Nugent guided Charlton to two wins and a draw, before the appointment of Karl Robinson.

Nugent then had a two-month spell with League Two Barnet, where he admits things “didn’t go as planned”.

He has taken the positives from both experiences, however, and explained why he left the Addicks.

“I came in with Russell but he was let go,” he said of his time at The Valley. “They asked me to take a few games, which I enjoyed, but when the new manager comes in with his own people it’s very difficult to stay on in those circumstances. Russell brought me in and I certainly wasn’t going to be going for the manager’s job at Charlton as I felt that wasn’t the right thing to do.

curve and I enjoyed it even if we didn’t get the results. Some of the stuff that they are doing now I helped put in place. I gave three or four debuts to young players, they’ve got a good crop over there.

“It didn’t quite go as planned but it was a learning curve. When you step up to that first-team level it’s all about getting results.”

Results are more difficult to measure with underage sides, but Nugent is working with the senior management team to set clear objectives for the young talent.

“You have to develop their mentality to get them into the first team,” Nugent said.

“I work very closely with the Millwall manager and I know what he’ll be looking for in those players.

I spoke to the players and told them quite often the reason some lads don’t get into first teams is because maybe there is a lack of trust. If they get in, are they going to let the team down?

“My role now is to make sure if they get in that side they know their duties and everything they need to do. What I can bring to it as well is I can see it from a manager’s perspective. I’m not a young academy coach who has stepped in.

“We’ll be working very closely together, with the manager, Dave Livermore and Adam Barrett in terms of how we can help the players to be the future of Millwall.”

RYAN TUNNICLIFFE edged closer to first-team action as he made his competitive debut – but it was youngster Lewis White who caught the eye with a stunning display for Millwall under-23s on Monday.

Tunnicliffe played 71 minutes of the 4-0 win over Huddersfield’s development squad at Calmont Road, as White’s hat-trick ensured the perfect start for new under-23s boss Kevin Nugent.

White, 18, signed his first professional deal with Millwall during the summer, and his talent has been flagged since the 2015-16 season when he was part of a travelling senior squad for a league game.

White put Millwall ahead in the 23rd minute against the Terriers on the opening day in the Professional Development League before doubling the advantage with nineteen

AMONG EVERYTHING else on Tuesday night, there were a few early season conundrums thrown up for Neil Harris to solve.

Late on there was the sight of Steve Morison being taken off and no sign of injury. When you need a goal or someone to fashion a chance, Morison is usually one of the most reliable bets.

So to see him substituted would normally be a surprise, except he has struggled to impose himself and dominate in the way he is used to doing, and his replacement Tom Elliott scored ten minutes from time to make it 3-3 and seemingly put Millwall in a position to win this game.

Instead, in the 88th minute, Elliott gave away a needless free-kick wide on the left Grant Ward took it, and there were shades of Harris’ first full season in charge, specifically the 3-2 loss to Barnsley, when Lewin Nyatanga scored in injury-time from a

free-kick delivery. Two years on it was Jordan Spence who rose to head past Jordan Archer.

Harris said afterwards it reminded him of the 3-3 draw with Rochdale last March when the Lions’ play-off chances looked to be in danger of slipping away.

It was also two years to the day that Millwall lost 4-0 at home to Coventry, when Harris questioned the attitude of his players. This was arguably the most critical he has been of his side since then. He said the performance of his players was “unacceptable”, and certainly the defending left a lot to be desired.

Harris has worn a suit for the last two league games, something he hadn’t done since the early part of the 201516 season. He discarded it soon after those early brutal defensive performances in that campaign, wearing a tracksuit instead, as if to signify it was going to take blood, sweat and tears to remedy the form and that was no way to ruin a nice

pinstripe.

If there is to be more symmetry with that season next weekend, it could be bad news for Archer.

Harris dropped his former teammate, David Forde, for the fourth game of the 2015-16 campaign.

Archer started his first ever competitive fixture for the club, and kept the first clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw at Scunthorpe.

Millwall’s fourth league game of this campaign is at Bristol City on Saturday, and if Archer is left out he can have little argument. His mistake in letting in Joe Garner’s fourthminute strike was, in Harris’ words, “horrendous”.

It was difficult not to feel some sympathy for Archer, who then had to endure another 86 minutes of the game, and there were times he was hesitant and unwilling to come off his line to sweep behind his defence. That is not the uncertainty you need when you play at this level.

He certainly should have kept out

Garner’s shot. Even though he seemed to dive slightly past the ball, he should have got enough contact on it to divert it away from goal, instead of letting it bounce in off his palms.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Archer picked an inopportune time to show his frailties, with Scotland assistant boss Mark Mcghee in attendance on scouting duty. As well as noting that howler, McGhee’s stats report wouldn’t have read any more encouragingly for Archer: Ipswich had four shots on target and scored four goals.

Archer couldn’t really be blamed for Ipswich’s next two goals. First Ward used his skill and quickness when up against Byron Webster to fashion room for a cross and Martyn Waghorn made a diagonal run from the right to slam home.

It wasn’t what was forecast early on, when Jed Wallace put Millwall ahead after 45 seconds, taking advantage of the failure of the Ipswich defence to clear a second ball that had dropped off Morison and a pair of defenders to half-volley past Bart Bialkowski.

Aiden O’Brien had scored the first equaliser, and it was a neat hooked finish over his shoulder after George Saville had hit the crossbar.

There was little wrong with Millwall’s attacking display on Tuesday, and they got the reward all their positive play deserved when Elliott prodded home after Wallace’s free-kick had fallen to him at the back post.

That should have been at least a point, or it should have set the Lions up for a final assault on the away goal.

Instead, there was one more late lapse, and Spence haunted The Den by invoking memories of those horror defensive shows in the early days of Harris’ tenure.

Who pays for it will be known at two o’clock on Saturday in Bristol.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has attempted to put the pressure on Bristol City this weekend – by insisting expectations are higher given the money they have spent this summer.

City boss Lee Johnson broke the club’s transfer record by paying £5.3 million for Senegal striker Famara Diedhiou from French top flight club Angers.

They also spent almost £2million – twice what Millwall have spent in the close season – on Niclas Eliasson, whom they recruited from Swedish club Norrköping.

Millwall have happy memories of Bristol, after they defeated City’s rivals Rovers 4-3 on the final day of the 201617 League One season to clinch a playoff spot.

The Robins finished seventeenth in the Championship last season, just three points above the relegation zone.

NEIL HARRIS warned his players he wants to see a reaction from them in training before the trip to take on Bristol City this Saturday.

Harris was furious with his side’s performance in the 4-3 defeat at home to Ipswich Town on Tuesday when Jordan Spence headed home a late winner.

Millwall are still looking for their first win back in the Championship.

“We have to remind them of what is expected of them and of their responsibility when they’re in the team,” Harris said.

“We have to point out where they go wrong as well as patting them on the back when they do well.

“I’ve had a few choice words with the boys. I’ve seen three Championship teams not better than us, but we’ve only picked up one point.

“We have to learn quickly, smarten up, make better decisions at key moments and we’ll win games of football.

“We’ve got a brilliant game on Saturday against Bristol City, a club with a lot of financial backing and a big crowd. I can’t wait for it.

“At the start of the season I said to the players that we were going to have some real difficult spells this year, lose three or four games in a row, win a couple games

in a row, have a horrendous 45 minutes against some sides – but it’s always about the reaction.

“I reminded the group of that, and those words will stick with the group between now and Thursday morning before training. It is about the reaction.

“My group need to show me that they have a better mentality. They need to show me that they’re not just really good footballers with the ball, but that we can defend as well.

“I’ve built my teams in the last couple of years on organisation and structure, discipline and work ethic. That’s what this club is based on. “[Tuesday] we had one half of it. We had it with the ball but not without it.”

Ex-Lions boss Mick McCarthy, meanwhile, who saw his Ipswich side maintain their 100 per cent run this season, was positive about Millwall’s chances in the Championship this season.

“When it got back to 3-3 they looked favourites to win it, they’re a belligerent bunch, which is nice,” he said. “They’re hard to beat.

“I think they will be fine. Our front four played very well. The irony is we scored with a header after all the balls in our box.

“They don’t get beaten too often, and I hope they don’t.

“I’m glad we beat them. I’m a professional but I have a really good feeling for the club and I hope they do well.”

Butcher has started just thirteen games since he joined the Lions from Burton Albion before the 2016-17 season.

The former Tottenham youth player has seen competition for a midfield spot increase this season, after Harris signed George Saville and Ryan Tunnicliffe.

Tunicliffe has yet to start a game as he catches up on fitness, but could be involved next week against Reading in the second round of the EFL Cup. That could convince Butcher he needs to leave to secure regular first-team football.

“I’ve left Calum and Mahlon [Romeo] out of the eighteen recently, they were both in the squad but not involved,” Harris said.

“It’s tough because they are two really good players and great lads.

Both are just out of the side and squad because of other players’ availability.

“It’s really tough on them.

Calum is something completely different to what we have in midfield. We did use him as a holding midfielder last year and he did okay.

“But naturally he wants to get forward, run past strikers and get into the box. He does add a different dimension, but his chances so far have been limited.

“He’s a great pro and while he’s here he’s always considered for selection.”
