More clarity needed over Isaiah care

I

F YOUR child is desperately ill, to the point where doctors feel nothing more can be done for them, who has the right to make that final decision – you, the parent, or the experts who care for your beloved child?

It’s a dilemma that has been at the forefront of national, even international debate, with the recent tragic case of Charlie Gard, whose parents fought a decision by Great Ormond Street Hospital not to seek further treatment for him. And as our front page story sadly makes clear, Charlie’s wasn’t just an isolated case – parents and doctors have to make the most difficult of choices, but most of the time they are out of the glare of the public eye.

There’s a danger, as seen in Charlie’s story, that media coverage can lead to a frenzy of fingerpointing on social media, such that staff at the hospital received abuse and death threats. Any right-minded person would disagree with that, and recognise that in these instances, everyone is working as best they can, and with the child’s best interests at heart. We take that view.

Lanre Haastrup and Takesha Thomas came to us about their son Isaiah, because they felt they had reached an impasse in their discussions with King’s College Hospital as to the right route to take – whether, as they believe, to look at other options that might encourage Isaiah’s respiratory drive, or to transfer him to palliative care, as the Trust have suggested. Add to this the fact that complications at birth are understood to have exacerbated Isaiah’s neurological damage, and whilst a subsequent report found no case for disciplinary action, it did find that the severity of the damage could have been reduced, if a delay in identifying that the baby’s heartrate had dropped significantly had not occurred. Understandably perhaps, the parents’ confidence in King’s has been shaken.

Lanre and Takesha were informed by their solicitor that the Trust had written to the High Court, and in a document seen by this paper, an application is made for an ‘inherent jurisdiction order’, arguing that limitation or withdrawal of treatment is ‘in Isaiah’s best interest’.

Of course King’s aren’t obliged to speak to us in detail, and when asked about this, we were told that the Trust was ‘trying to reach agreement with the family on the next steps for his care to prevent the need for a Court to decide’, and that it did not anticipate a court case. But if you were Isaiah’s parents, and you learnt that the hospital had written to the High Court, you might very much feel that it was preparing to take matters into its own hands through court proceedings, should an agreement not be reached. And what does this agreement entail, other than for the parents to agree to withdraw treatment for their son?

Doctors, nurses and midwives at King’s, like in all our hospitals, go above and beyond the remits of their employment, because they care, and want the best for their patients. Isaiah’s case is no different.

But surely the Trust has to accept that the issues it found itself in its report on Isaiah’s birth will inevitably have impacted on the parents’ confidence in King’s? And isn’t it reasonable for Lanre and Takesha to feel there is a discrepancy between writing to the High Court over jurisdiction matters, yet responding that the Trust ‘does not anticipate court action’?

It is for this reason that we have decided to shine a light on these proceedings in today’s edition of the News. Further clarity is needed.

Crowdfunding campaign launched to transform derelict Victorian toilet block into arts and publishing studio

A CROWDFUNDING campaign has been launched to transform a derelict Victorian toilet block in Camberwell into an arts and publishing studio.

Joyce Cronin and Louisa Bailey said the brick block in Brunswick Park had been empty “since the 1980s”, and want to give it a facelift.

“The toilets have all been taken out. It’s an empty shell with no electricity or running water, it needs a lot of work,” said Louisa, from Forest Hill. “We’re hoping it can become an informal place where people can socialise and run a business.”

Also working with her colleague Sharon Mah, Louisa hopes the council-owned hut can become a base for their publishing business, Publication Studio London.

“We want to offer our publishing services to local students, but it could also be used as a pop-up space for theatre and film screenings and artists. We’ve also spoken to the Spike Roastery [café in Peckham Rye] about having a coffee cart out front,” said Louisa, 35.

Their target is to raise £10,000, and over 180 people have already pledged £6,700, with nineteen days left to make up the rest, and for their campaign to be a success.

Although they saw other potential locations that were more “ready to go”, the old W/C off St Giles Road caught their imagination, and they “couldn’t get it out of our minds”.

“We used to have a similar project in Kennington, where we had an old barber shop used by people doing a mixture of things like cutting hair and a publishing businesses, and we want to do a similar thing here,”

Housing staff ‘were threatened by man with baseball bat’ PECKHAM: A man wielding a baseball bat threatened staff at Southwark Council’s housing solutions office in Peckham on Monday.

The incident happened on August 7 at about 1pm, at the council’s offices in Bournemouth Road.

The Met Police confirmed the incident happened and that officers attended, but were unable to confirm if an arrest had been made before press deadline.

Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, told the News: “A man wielding a baseball bat attempted to enter council offices at Bournemouth Road but was prevented from doing so by security officers.

“Southwark Council will not tolerate abuse of our staff and will take appropriate measures if necessary.”

Woman hit by moped ridden on pavement LONDON BRIGE: A female pedestrian was hit by a moped after three riders mounted a pavement on London Bridge.

The woman was taken to hospital after suffering a leg injury during the incident at about 12.40am yesterday, Wednesday.

City of London Police are investigating and have asked anyone with information to come forward.

“We are aware of an incident that took place this morning [Wednesday] at approximately 12.40am, whereby three mopeds mounted the east pavement travelling southbound on London Bridge,” a police spokesperson said.

“A pedestrian was hit and received an injury to her leg, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.”

SEXUAL PREDATOR WHO ASSAULTED FIVE WOMEN IN ONE WEEKEND JAILED SOUTHWARK

A “DISTURBED sexual predator” who sexually assaulted five women in Southwark in one weekend has been jailed for eight years.

Dorian Bell, 32, formerly of Bondway in Vauxhall, committed all the offences during a rampage across Borough, Walworth and Camberwell, between March 18 and 19.

The first assault happened at about 4am at the St. Saviour’s Estate in SE1. A young woman walking through the estate became aware of a man behind her. Bell attempted to engage her in conversation before pushing her against a wall and attempting to kiss her. He then put his hand down her trousers and sexually assaulted her.

At 4:50am in New Kent Road, Bell approached a couple who were walking ahead of him. Bell approached the woman and put his

hands up her dress. The woman screamed and elbowed him before he ran off.

The third attack happened the following day (March 19) at 4:45pm in Beckway Street, Walworth. Bell targeted a young woman by hugging her and putting his hand under her top to grope her.

Less than an hour later in Walworth Road, a young woman was walking with her father when a man approached her and groped her backside.

Then at 11:40pm, a woman walking down John Ruskin Street was dragged by Bell into an alleyway. Bell punched the victim’s face, pulled out a knife and threatened to rape her. The victim screamed and two passersby intervened before Bell ran off.

Officers spotted Bell, based on witnesses’ descriptions of him, in a street nearby. He tried to flee but was apprehended after a fiveminute chase in Queens Row, Walworth. He tried to cut his

wrists and throat with the knife, but was arrested and handcuffed.

Detectives linked the offences using DNA evidence, CCTV footage and descriptions of Bell given by witnesses.

Bell pleaded guilty to all counts: of attempted rape; four counts of sexual assault; and one count of possession of a knife. He was sentenced on August 4 at Inner London Crown Court to eight years in jail, plus five years on licence, and was put on the sex offenders register.

Detective constable Robert Jamieson of the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: “Dorian Bell is an extremely dangerous and disturbed sexual predator who has complete disregard for his victims and the impact his actions have had on their lives.

“The sentence handed to Bell reflects the gravity of the offences and the effect that his actions have had on the victims since the attacks.”

THE LOVE letters penned by a gay Bermondsey soldier during WWII have been revealed in a book.

Southwark author Stephen Bourne has unearthed the stories of gay men fighting for our country during the two world wars in his latest book, Fighting Proud.

The historian’s work, which coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality, includes the love story of Bermondseyborn Ralph Hall and his partner Montague Glover.

Ralph was born in Vine Street Buildings, off Tooley Street, in December 1913 to wharf labourer Henry Hall, who worked in the nearby docks, and his wife Alice.

In 1930, seventeen-year-old labourer Ralph met Montague Glover, a former WWI soldier who was by then a wellestablished architect in his 30s.

The pair began what was to become a long-term relationship, at a time when homosexuality was a criminal offence.

“He [Ralph] came from a large family in Bermondsey and was honest and bright, though poorly educated,” explained Bourne.

“Monty was an educated and worldly man who could show his lover the kind

of life many young working-class men of that time could only dream about.

“To avoid detection, working-class Ralph had to be seen to the outside world as the middle-class Monty’s manservant, his ‘employee’.”

Ralph was drafted into the RAF in August 1940 and served until he was demobbed in September 1945.

During the war, he wrote Montague about 300 love letters, some of which have been documented in Fighting Proud.

On December 18, 1942, he wrote: “Hallo Darling, you don’t know how much I miss you […] I kiss the photo eve-ry night, so you are in bed with me

after all.

“I would rather have you with me. I was in the desert for a week and was it hell. Just sand and more sand.

“Let’s get back to the old days my dear as soon as this war is over.”

The couple remained together after the war, until Monty’s death in 1983, with Ralph surviving him by just four years.

Bourne said he wanted to document their story and many others that were “hidden or overlooked” in other books on the subject, rather than rewriting the life stories of gay he described as “icons”.

McDonald’s ditches plans to extend Rye Lane hours after resident complaints PECKHAM: McDonald’s has pulled out of plans to extend the opening hours of its Rye Lane branch until 5am on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The fast food chain had made an application to Southwark Council.

But the company confirmed on August 4 that complaints raised by local residents had discouraged it from continuing its application.

A McDonald’s spokesperson told the News: “We can confirm that McDonald’s chose to withdraw an application to extend the opening hours of our Rye Lane restaurant.

“This decision was made in response to a small number of concerns raised by the local community.

“As part of our commitment to being a good neighbour, we will work to address these concerns before we consider any similar applications in future.”

The application has been removed from Southwark Council’s online register of applications.

Had the application not been withdrawn, a decision to approve or reject it would have been taken by councillors on Southwark Council’s Licensing Committee.

Arrests after teen knifed to death in road PECKHAM

POLICE HAVE made six arrests after a nineteen-year-old, named by friends and family as Wimbledon man Daniel Namanga, was fatally stabbed in Old Kent Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Officers were called at about 2am with the London Ambulance Service to the scene, at the junction with Ilderton Road, where the wounded man was found.

Despite paramedics’ attempts to save the young man’s life, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Namanga, known as Loni, was reported by the Wimbledon Guardian to have attended Rutlish School in Watery Road.

The Old Ruts Rugby Club in Wimbledon, which Mr Namanga attended, tweeted saying: “All of our thoughts are with Dan Namanga's family and friends. RIP.” But the tweet was later deleted.

Five people were arrested shortly after the attack took place. They included: • A 23-year-old man, who has been released under further investigation • A 21-year-old man, released under further investigation • A 25-year-old woman, released under further investigation • A 25-year-old woman, who has been released and no further action will be taken against her • A 23-year-old man, released and no further action will be taken against him A sixth suspect – a 31-year-old man – was arrested on Tuesday evening on suspicion of murder, and was taken to a south London police station. The Met was unable to confirm at the time this

newspaper went to press whether the sixth suspect would be released under further investigation, or if a charge had been made against him.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, led by detective inspector Domenica Catino, are investigating.

A statement from the Met said the victim’s next of kin had been informed, but formal identification had not taken place by press deadline.

A police cordon placed along the junction preventing pedestrians or vehicles from entering Ilderton Road had been removed by 10:30pm on Tuesday. Small areas beside the Ambleside Point and Windermere tower blocks of the Tustin Estate were also taped off, and police on scene told the News that “evidence” had been found.

Mum Takesha, from Peckham, said she “almost died” during the incident, and lost nearly half of her blood, leaving her in a coma for several days. “I could feel the baby shaking inside of me. He was inhaling blood,” the 36-year-old said.

The incident has left five-month-old Isaiah with a weak and inconsistent “respiratory drive”; this means that although his body and organs are growing naturally, his brain lacks the instinct to breathe independently for prolonged periods of time.

A Serious Incident Report from King’s, published on July 28, found there was a delay in identifying that the baby’s heartrate had dropped significantly for approximately 27 minutes, before a doctor was summoned and an emergency caesarean was ordered. The report said “ten or more minutes” could have been saved, which would not have resulted in the delivery of a perfectly healthy baby, but would likely have reduced the severity of the neurological damage. The report found no grounds for disciplinary action.

Isaiah is currently hooked up to a ventilator which breathes for him, and he is fed through a nasal tube. He rests in a shared room in King’s neonatal intensive care ward, where his mum and dad take turns to visit him “unrelentingly, every day”. Lanre, a 38-year-old practising lawyer living in Brockley, visits his son from 9pm to 1am after work. Takesha, a stylist, takes care of Isaiah from 11am and 4pm.

The couple are furious at King’s for the damage they claim the hospital has done to theirs and their son’s lives.

Lanre told the News: “It’s like the Charlie Gard case. They want to end my son’s life.”

The tragic case of eleven-month old Charlie Gard, who died last month after a protracted legal battle, shone a rare spotlight on the role of courts in such cases, which journalists often cannot report on due to safeguarding the privacy of the family.

For Lanre and Takesha their baby son’s life has not yet reached the stage were the courts are involved, but they do say that they have refused permission for doctors to end Isaiah’s life, and disagree that to do so would be “in his best interest”.

The family contacted the News upon receiving word from their solicitors that King’s College Hospital had written to the High Court, to notify it of the

disagreement. In an “Application for inherent jurisdiction order in relation to children”, dated May 25 this year and seen by the News, an application is made for “Decleration [sic] that limitation or withdrawn [sic] of treatment is in Isaiah’s best interest.”

But when questioned about this by the News, a King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust spokeswoman responded: “We are trying to reach agreement with the family on the next steps for his care to prevent the need for a Court to decide on the most appropriate treatment plan. It absolutely does not anticipate a court case.” The spokeswoman confirmed this week that no further request had been made to schedule a court hearing date.

The Trust was asked whether the family’s doctors had repeatedly advocated that Isaiah should be allowed to be transferred to palliative care, and allowed to die, as suggested by his parents, but it did not respond.

Lanre said: “My son has been cheated out of his life. It’s done untold hardship on us. We have suffered in the last months, and now we have to ask them [King’s

Hospital doctors] to keep him alive.”

Unless the hospital successfully applied for powers from the High Court, he added, “they would need our permission to transfer him to palliative care and to switch off his life support. We want to take him home so we can look after him.

“We believe they have rushed into this decision to end Isaiah’s life. Trust has broken down to the extent that we have no faith in them anymore.”

Takesha added: “From every meeting we’ve had with them they have always tried to steer us towards palliative care. We are determined to do everything possible for our child, and they’re telling us ‘no we can’t’.”

“It’s felt like they have been trying to pressure us to accept that Isaiah should die. It’s up to us to look after him for the rest of his life. They are telling us to have him die.”

Should any High Court hearing go ahead, the embattled mum and dad believe their core argument for continuing Isaiah’s treatment will be that King’s has not tried all the options to “encourage” his respiratory drive, which Lanre says is “inconsistent” but not non-existent. And that Isaiah’s doctors should reduce the “cocktail” of sedative drugs, which are making him “completely dependent” on a ventilator to breathe.

brain injury, and has been cared for in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit since his birth five months ago. Sadly, despite intensive treatment, he remains fully dependent on life support. We have been, and continue to, work closely with the family in discussions about the long-term prognosis and plan of care, and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment.”

The parents also requested their son be transferred to the Evelina Children’s Hospital near Waterloo, in the hope of getting better care from its specialist facilities and staff, particularly for physiotherapy for Isaiah. But their application for transfer was recently refused. “If our relationship has broken down with the staff at King’s, and this has all clearly culminated in a lack of trust, it must be the logical thing to do to transfer him to the Evelina,” Lanre said.

However, King’s responded that Isaiah had had an individualised therapy programme under its physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams, involving the parents, which was regularly reviewed and updated and that no concerns had been raised with the team about Isaiah’s care. A spokesman for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Evelina Hospital, declined to comment on the refusal to admit Isaiah from King’s, citing patient confidentiality.

A LIGHTNING bolt struck a Peckham elderly people’s home on Saturday, causing a small fire and residents needing to be evacuated.

The sheltered accommodation was evacuated by the London Fire Brigade, whose statement said: “Half of a threeroomed flat on the third floor and a small part of an outer wall and insulation at the four floor block was

damaged by the fire.

“Ten people were led to safety by fire crews. No injuries were reported.

“The fire was extinguished by crews working from inside the building, from its roof and from an aerial ladder platform. The walls around the affected area had to be dismantled so

firefighters could gain access to the smouldering insulation between the interior and exterior walls.”

Police unable to confirm warning over men in park bushes BERMONDSEY: Parents have taken to social media to warn of men “hiding in bushes” and “trying to entice children” in Southwark Park.

A status warning parents and carers has been circulating on Facebook since at least Thursday (August 3) last week and has since been copied and pasted dozens of times.

The post states: “A warning to all parents and carers in the Bermondsey & Rotherhithe area.

“Multiple men have been seen hiding in the bushes at Southwark Park trying to entice children to go with them, and asking if their parents are around.”

It is not known where the post originated from and police could not confirm whether it had been reported.

Station disruption for £800m overhaul

WATERLOO: Almost half of Waterloo station’s platforms have temporarily closed to allow for an £800million overhaul.

A number of platforms will be closed until August 28 while they are extended to accommodate longer trains with more seats and more space for passengers.

Platforms 1-9 have been closed, while platforms 20-24 (the former Waterloo International Terminal) have been temporarily opened to reduce some of the impact.

Commuters have faced disruption this week as significantly fewer South West Trains services have been running into Waterloo while the work is completed.

The overhaul will continue to cause lengthy queues during peak times at all major stations on the South West Trains network, as well as station closures, and more crowded services.

Passengers have been advised to plan ahead and avoid the busiest stations during peak hours.

HUNDREDS FLOCKED to Elephant and Castle to experience the capital’s biggest Latin-American community festival.

Plaza Latina Festival featured its seventh edition of Carnaval Del Pueblo on Sunday (August 6), with a day packed full of LatinAmerican food, music, dance, arts and crafts, and workshops.

The event, which took place at Nursery Row Park and East Street Market, attracted 1,500 visitors this year.

Nuala Riddell-Morales, director of Carnaval del Pueblo, at Plaza Latina Festival, said: “The public’s reaction throughout the festival was fantastic, with 15,000 people all celebrating the Colombian and Latin-American community.

WORKS TO BEGIN ON ROTHERHITHE ROUNDABOUT

GRIDLOCKS AT Rotherhithe roundabout could be a thing of the past as improvement work is expected to begin this month.

Traffic regularly grinds to a halt on Jamaica Road and Lower Road at peak times because of motorists queuing to use Rotherhithe tunnel.

In a bid to tackle the congestion hotspot, Transport for London has revealed its plans to change the layout of the roundabout to ease congestion at the northbound entrance to Rotherhithe tunnel.

TfL plans to convert the existing emergency access lane between the roundabout and the tunnel entrance into a second general traffic lane to improve the flow of vehicles.

To maintain emergency access, a barrier-restricted lane will be directed over a traffic island, which will see one tree removed.

To improve the flow of traffic in the area, the following road markings will also be changed: • On Jamaica Road, the lane marked ‘Surrey Quays Only’ will be reassigned as a lane for traffic

heading towards ‘Surrey Quays & Tunnel Approach’. This is not expected to have a negative impact on traffic for Surrey Quays as congestion already often blocks the lane.

• Where Jamaica Road meets Rotherhithe roundabout, the two existing lanes will be made into three narrower lanes. New directional arrows will encourage traffic heading to Brunel Road, Rotherhithe tunnel, and Surrey Quays to use the correct lane.

• On Rotherhithe roundabout

between Jamaica Road and the tunnel entrance, the existing two lanes will be made into three to allow traffic to progress more efficiently.

Southwark Liberal Democrats successfully campaigned to have yellow boxes painted in Jamaica Road and have continued to fight for improvements to Rotherhithe roundabout.

Welcoming the news of TfL’s planned changes, they said longer-term work was also needed to improve the roundabout design.

said: “Traffic building up along Jamaica Road and Lower Road causes huge frustration and unhealthy air pollution in our community.

“This is another stage of good progress in our campaign. Southwark Liberal Democrats continue to fight the corner of local residents and will not rest until the gridlock is beaten.”

Rotherhithe tunnel will be kept open during the work to the roundabout, which is expected to begin on August 21.

Later this year, a consultation is expected on proposals for Cycle Superhighway 4, which would take cyclists from Tower Bridge to Greenwich.

Charity dinner for day centre plans BERMONDSEY

A CHARITY dinner has been organised to raise money for the transformation of a Bermondsey day centre car park into a garden and art studio.

The Riverside day centre, run by charity the Camden Society, needs to raise £16,000 to turn its car park into a hive of activity for people with learning disabilities.

The charity plans to build raised

accessible flower beds where they can teach gardening and grow food to be served in the kitchen, with some beds made available to the local community.

It also hopes to raise funds for an art studio for users of the day centre, as well as other community groups.

Almost £13,000 has already been raised towards the project thanks to a £10,000 pledge from the Mayor of London and other generous donations.

SOUTHWARK POLICE’S leading detective on moped robberies has given an exclusive interview to the News about the scale of the problem, and what can be done to keep it at bay.

Detective chief inspector David Rutter said Southwark was “roughly seventh in the pecking order” out of London’s 32 borough areas, with the worst-affected being Westminster, Camden and Islington in the city centre.

He said there were 15,000 moped, scooters and motorbike thefts in London in the year April 2016 to March 2017, compared with 10,000 in 2015-16.

In Southwark alone, the dramatic increase was felt as 2015’s record of 581 cases rose to 777 in 2016-17. But the worst-affected borough in London reached 2,000 cases. That’s at the same time as London has seen an increase in violent crime for the first time in many years.

The link between area and mopedenabled crime, David said, was with tourism “where there is a high footfall and people going about their daily business”. That’s why the areas of Southwark where moped-enabled crime is most common are SE1 and SE16 – the most “target rich” environments.

David said a big part of reducing moped crime was to change people’s

behaviour, to make sure people’s bikes couldn’t be easily nicked and phones weren’t always on show “About 90 per cent of what’s stolen by moped gangs is mobile phones,” David said. “If you’re up in SE1 you’ll see loads of people will be out and looking at their phones. They will be vulnerable because they’re not paying attention. But if they go hands-free, or if they hold their bags or their phones on the side of their body that’s close to the shop front, rather than their side that’s closest to the road, they will be less vulnerable. We also find that transport hubs like train stations can be targeted, because whenever you get off the tube, the first thing you do is look at your phone to see if you’ve got any messages.”

A key factor behind the rise in incidents has been an explosion in the

David said this borough’s officers had the ability to call on specially trained officers from Territorial Support, to chase suspects on motorbikes, and to video them in order to at least be able to capture licence plates.

He said it was an “urban myth” that the Met was not able to chase after suspects, but that the permission to do so needed to be sought from a senior officer, who would assess the safety risks before giving permission to pursue in any particular location or time of day.

But a way to “supress” moped crime in any area is to deploy patrolling officers in areas where it’s a known problem. And knowing where to deploy officers is a matter of getting the right local intelligence. David said: “Essentially we’re looking at specific locations at specific times with our resourcing, whether it’s a uniformed officer on patrol, or a marked vehicle or an unmarked vehicle. If you have one officer in one place for fifteen minutes, it can supress crime in that place for up to two hours.”

But that intelligence – knowing when and where to deploy an officer – relies on information from local residents.

“We want to generate information from the public,” David said, “one of our tactics is also to carry out sweeps of different areas where residents have let us know they suspect that robbers have stashed weapons or stolen bikes.”

Inspector Jim Cole, a ward officer for Rotherhithe, told the News: “A lot of estates have hidey-holes and places where you can easily hide a moped – somewhere less visible, and it will stay there for days. Then we sweep in and find them.”

David added: “And if we do have reason to suspect someone – based on information we receive – then we will arrest them and we will doorstep them.

We call it the Al Capone Method.”

THE MILLWALL Community Trust launched a new sports and construction trainee scheme for teenagers last week.

Seven new trainees were presented with their Millwall shirts before beginning the course, which involves a mixture of academic and practical training through work placements.

The free 12 week programme is aimed at 16 -18 year olds who are

not currently in work or education.

The course aims to prepare them for a careers in either construction or sport’s coaching.

Sports trainees have the opportunity to go on to the Academy to gain a full coaching

qualification.

Joe McGlynn, 16, who is on the sport trainee scheme, said: “I’ve been a Millwall supporter since I was young and I thought it would be a great opportunity to train to be a coach, as well as improve my skills and confidence.”

AN ELDERLY pensioner has warned other cash point users to be vigilant after having his bank card stolen in broad daylight.

Matthew Redmond said he had only just put his card into a cash point on Southwark Park Road when a stranger came up behind him and ran off with it.

The 80-year-old, who has lived in Bermondsey for many years, said the person who stole his card managed to withdraw £300 from another cash point just yards down the road – and has now warned others to take extra care.

"It was about 1.30pm on June 17 and I was at the cash point outside the newsagents on Southwark Park Road, near Iceland," said Mr Redmond, who only retired four years ago.

"At that particular time there was nobody around.

"I went up to the cash point, tapped my number in and I felt something on the back of me and I looked around and said 'what do you think you're doing' and he said 'sorry'.

"Then I went to get my card out and he said 'let me help you' and he pulled out a handkerchief and seemed to be going over the keys,

then he slipped around the corner and down the alleyway."

Mr Redmond said he did not remember seeing anyone take the card and that he thought he had been distracted by one person while it was stolen by another.

"When I tried to see if my card was in the machine that's when I realised they had taken it," he said.

"Then I rang my bank, London Mutual Credit Union, to get the card blocked and found out he'd withdrawn three times.

"It was two times to get £50 and once for £200."

Mr Redmond said the bank refused to pay out £300, so he turned to Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle for help.

"I went to see Neil Coyle and he contacted Credit Union on my behalf," he said.

"He rang me and said he managed to get the money and to check if it was returned and it was.

"It took just over three weeks to get the money back; it's a lot of money for me."

Neil Coyle MP said: "I'm always happy to help local people and Mr Redmond clearly needed help.

"The Mutual should know better and should have helped sooner but I am very pleased Mr Redmond got his money back.”

CAMPAIGNERS HAVE kept up their calls to reopen Camberwell Station by making a giant cake in the shape of the (hopefully) new station’s logo.

The sprawling block of sponge and icing was served up at the Brunswick Park Fete in Camberwell, on Saturday August 5.

Sophy Tayler, who lives by Myatts Field Park, told the News: “I think we could feed a train-load of people with it.

“We’re bringing the community together to have some fun. We wanted to get everyone in Camberwell to think about the railway station in a positive way.”

The News recently reported that a crucial report for reopening the century-old station – due to be

published by TfL after being signed off by Network Rail and Southwark Council – is now expected in September.

Sophy and her fellow campaigner Barbara Pattinson (of the SE5 Forum) then went to City Hall on Monday to give a slice of the station cake to London Mayor Sadiq Khan. They also planned to offer more cake to officials from TfL and Network Rail, as well as King’s College Hospital and Maudsley Hospital bosses, who emphasised the need for improved transport links to Camberwell.

But the campaigners are still gathering signatures for their online petition, which has now reached 1,868 signatures.

A KENNINGTON woman fears she will no longer be able to leave her home after being told by Southwark Council to remove her mobility scooter from outside her flat.

Residents of Conant House near Kennington Park received a letter from the council in July giving them a week to remove all items from communal corridors, walkways and stairways. The letter stated that the London Fire Brigade had advised the Council that such items could delay or prevent residents escaping if there was a fire.

Susan Crimins, 61, relies on her mobility scooter to get around and only has use of one arm following a stroke after she was diagnosed with cancer. A few months ago the Council installed a ramp to her ground floor flat which enabled her to keep her scooter by her front door.

“Before I had the ramp I had to get myself down the stairs and lock up my scooter there. By the time I’d done all that I was so exhausted I didn’t want to go out anyway. Being able to keep my scooter by my door has made it possible for me to get out and about,” she said The council have suggested Susan could keep her scooter in bike sheds which are being built outside her home but she says they wouldn’t be wide enough and would mean she has to make her way up and down the ramp.

She was also asked if she would consider moving into sheltered housing if nowhere could be found for her scooter, an idea Susan has rejected as she has spent “a fortune” doing up her flat and doesn’t want to lose the support network of her neighbours.

Susan said: “We’re not like Grenfell Tower, we’re an open block. I understand why people might need to move stuff from the balconies but I’m on the ground floor and my scooter

and plants aren’t causing an obstruction.

Yvonne Peto, 66, has lived in the building for 33 years and has also been told to remove her makeshift garden from outside her flat.

She said: “I’m heartbroken. It just seems ridiculous because no one walks past my door to get out the building and we’re on the ground floor anyway.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing said: “Since the terrible tragedy at Grenfell Tower Southwark Council, like all local authorities around the country, has reviewed all of our fire safety procedures. In light of this, we now have to ask that any potential obstructions be removed from any communal areas. Across all of our housing sites we are implementing strict fire safety policies fairly and equally.

“We do, however, appreciate that easy access to her mobility scooter is important to Ms Crimins. We have worked hard to find alternative storage solutions such as storing the scooter in a unit that we are remodelling outside the main entrance to her building.

Resident service officers have also visited Ms Crimins at her home and have offered to work with colleagues in the adaptations team to provide an access ramp to allow Ms Crimins to manoeuvre her scooter into her home.

We are now doing all we can to work with Ms Crimins to find alternative accommodation at her request.”

Winnie Williams was joined by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jamille Mohammed, and the Pearly King of Peckham and his family to mark the occasion.

The home was decked out in red – her favourite colour – and staff baked a cat-themed cake for the animal-lover.

Winnie has no known relatives and

was an only child but was joined by the many friends she has made in the care home over the years.

Grace Watson met Winnie over 35 years ago when she worked in another care home in Peckham before Winnie moved to Greenhive home on Brayards Road in 2002.

“We always got on well and I’ve visited her every year since she moved here,” Grace said.

Born in 1910, the year before George V was crowned King, Winnie grew up in Peckham and attended Rockingham Road Elementary School on New Kent Road. She worked as a nurse in Leytonstone as well as a cleaner at Guys’ Hospital.

Winnie said she very much enjoyed her party and was treated to a musical performance by schoolchildren from nearby Palm Tree Academy.

“Winnie has always been a great singer and when she was younger she won competitions,” said Grace, who also grew up in Peckham and now lives in Orpington.

“She also loves reading and when I asked her what she wanted for her birthday she said she wanted a book.”

Horniman’s new butterfly house

A NEW Butterfly House opens its doors at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill on August 14.

It will be home to hundreds of freeflying butterflies in a tropical indoor garden, including rare species from around the world such as the Horniman’s Swallowtail.

Visitors can also get up close and watch the butterflies hatch in the

puparium as they learn about the insect’s life cycle.

The opening follows months of construction, with more than 60 exotic species planted in the indoor garden and staff given specialist training in butterfly care.

The Butterfly House will be open throughout the year. Tickets are on sale from August 5 at www.horniman.ac.uk/butterflyhouse or in person at the Museum and cost £6, with a family price of £15 for two adults and two children.

This photo was taken in the late 1940s on a pub Beano (day out) in Walworth, before the group travelled to Margate.

EVERY OLD-SCHOOL south Londoner knows the folklore of cockney criminal Frankie Fraser, whose violent tendencies were infamous on the streets of Walworth.

But few would perhaps know about the equally incredible lives led by his three sisters.

Having chronicled the life of old mad Frank, author Beezy Marsh has turned her pen to Peggy, Kathleen and Eva; in her new book ‘Keeping My Sisters’ Secrets’.

Beezy – a former Sunday Times journalist whose biography ‘Mad Frank & Sons’ was published last year – was given “unprecedented access” to interview the family and learn about the three bold women, who grew up in Howley Terrace, in Waterloo during the 1930s.

There was Eva, the “naughty girl” of the three, who became a key figure in the all-girl gang, the Forty Thieves, who targeted the West End’s big department stores”.

“Eva got into shoplifting, but had a heart of gold. It’s clear she still had to feed her family by acting on the wrong side of the law” Beezy said.

“She was one of the top thieves during the war.

“But she was once caught stealing stockings and was sent to prison.”

Beezy, from Ealing, explained that it was in prison that Eva met Diana Mosley, wife of Oswald – leader of fascist Blackshirts who were a fearsome presence in London in the 1920s and ‘30s. Somehow Eva found herself in the opposite company of her eldest sister Peggy, whose boyfriend was heavily involved in the Communist Party, whom the Blackshirts fought in the famous Battle of Bermondsey, and the even more famous Battle of Cable Street.

an actress, and make use of her striking good looks. Had it all gone to plan, she could have inhabited a very different side of the West End to her little sister Eva. But Beezy said: “[Kathleen] experienced the slums of Waterloo as a place buzzing with excitement and the tight-knit community, with its Catholic Church parades, which gave her the chance to shine,” though she instead works at the old Hartley’s jam factory in Bermondsey.

Beezy reveals how the girls’ father would beat their mother – a big influence on their outlook. “He was working all the hours he got sent, but he couldn’t make ends meet. The family was hard-working and kept themselves clean [out of crime].”

Then there’s Frankie himself, who makes a brief appearance. The reader is also introduced to the girls’ brother Jim, who became a sergeant in the army and fought in North Africa.

Warning over bogus tax rebate scam

A WARNING has been issued by Southwark Council about fraudsters targeting residents with a bogus tax rebate scam.

Fraudsters were reported to have been emailing, texting and calling people about claims they are eligible for a tax rebate. The fraudsters will demand an “advance-fee payment” before offering to process a rebate claim.

How to protect yourself: • Never respond to unsolicited calls • Your local council won’t ever phone out-of-the-blue to discuss a council tax rebate.

• Don’t give your bank account details or sensitive information to anyone without carrying out your own research on them.

• Get independent financial advice before claiming any form of refund.

• Check the caller’s credentials.

• No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advanced fee If you think you have been a victim of this type of scam you should report this to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

THE HUNTSMAN and Hounds pub in Walworth has been bought by United St Saviour’s charity, who will reinvest the rental income back into the community.

The 160 year old pub closed in 2014 after being sold for redevelopment but re-opened last year following a campaign led by the Walworth Society to get the pub recognised as a community asset.

The campaign convinced the developer to preserve the building’s ground floor and basement, which was then taken over by a Bromleybased family pub business.

Now United St Saviour’s has bought the pub, safeguarding its future further. The rental income will be used to support the charity’s community investment programme and sheltered housing for elderly people in Southwark.

The pub will be run by the team behind the Market Porter in Borough Market, which is also owned by United St Saviour’s.

The charity say it will be a “true community pub” with plans to introduce teas, coffees, cakes and

traditional pub food. A few changes will be made to the pub’s interior before it re-opens later this month.

Diana Cochrane of the Walworth Society said: “We are delighted that United St Saviour’s have bought the pub. As a local charity who know the area, they will hopefully have a long term interest in the building. One of the main reasons behind the campaign was to protect the architecture and interior of the building and we hope this will be preserved for the community to use.”

Tools needed for council to do better job

REGARDING LAST week's front page article ‘I-watering Southwark spalashes out on nearly 2,000 Apple products in it’s bid reduce paper use - spending over £700,000’ (Southwark News, August 3, 2017).

Southwark residents are already starting to benefit because council staff are getting the tools that they need to do an ever better job: Far from ‘splashing out’ we want front line staff and councillors to be able to respond quickly, with the information that they need at their fingertips, cutting down on form filling and costly bureaucracy.

For example, we have created a new app which means that our housing inspectors can much more efficiently manage repairs, doing more in the working day, without the need to come in and out of the office. We are getting much more done, completing more repairs and resolving more issues for tenants as a result.

Far from being forced to give up their Blackberries as Cllr Barber claimed, the LibDem councillors also welcomed the change. Indeed the Leader of the Opposition demanded an apology when her councillors were initially left out of the iPhone pilot and later the feedback from the LibDem chief whip was that the iPhone was "certainly a great improvement on the Blackberry".

Southwark News is right to scrutinise what we spend as a council, just as we did when we decided to invest in iPhones and iPads for staff who need them.

We took the decision to change because we had to: our previous Blackberry based technology was no longer supported, so we had to make a change. Your article last week quotes that a Blackberry costs £20, for the type we were using the last batch actually cost around £159 and the price was increasing.

When choosing to go with Apple devices we took all considerations into account: as we all know when we buy a phone or tablet, we need to think about the immediate cost and also reliability, data security and whether it offers the apps we need. This is even more important for an organisation such as the council: we don’t want to wake up to headlines that sensitive data has been leaked, or to find that we can’t provide residents with the information they need because we can’t run the right app.

For all these reasons and more, the real story here is weServe and weSave, not iWatering.

I was at that game and most Millwall supporters who went on the pitch did so in a light hearted fashion, just wishing to celebrate the team's triumph and to take selfies.

Nevertheless, these supporters committed a crime, albeit the minor one of trespassing.

However, the police are not really interested in these supporters. They are after the thugs in the photographs who threatened and intimidated the Bradford players.

Threatening people is not a minor crime by any stretch of imagination. Millwall has a poor public image and as soon as it improves over a period of time along comes something like the Wembley invasion to put the club back to square one. Ms Brady fails to see the broader picture or the implications of what she sees as something minor.

Firstly, sponsors are reluctant to be associated with the club because of its tarnished image.

Secondly, when Millwall play away this season the local police forces will place restrictions on the time of the kick-offs etc. Millwall will find it difficult to argue because the police will point to the Wembley invasion.

I am sure that Millwall FC do not regard the Met police action as a ‘waste of time’.

However just recently Residential Realtor have put up a huge number of boards on properties that they are probably not instructed on and are definitely not allowed to put up boards.

This is not only unnecessary but creates an uneven playing field putting more established agents who are helping to sell a genuine property at a disadvantage.

No doubt the council will fine Residential Realtor and ensure that they do not carry on this practice.

How to kill two birds with one stone

THE LOCAL Government Association has stated that by 2020 there will be a £5.8 billion funding gap for social care.

Now consider the overseas aid budget, £13 billion and rising? This money, given away so easily to foreign governments to spend (waste), on questionable schemes, while people who have paid taxes all their lives, have to fund their own care in old age.

Here’s an idea that might make the foreign aid budget more palatable.

When an overseas patient (health tourist) leaves the NHS with an outstanding bill and that patient is a citizen of one of the countries we give foreign aid to, then deduct the outstanding debt from that country’s aid donation and given to the NHS. That country can then chase one of it’s own citzens for payment.

It may be small at times but at least the NHs will receive a boost to it’s budget, and as they say, every little helps.

This is killing two birds with one stone.

The responses to the Bakerloo line extension consultation have been positive and we can be quietly content that the hard working people at TfL, including my predecessor Val Shawcross, are moving closer to extending the line and helping with the regeneration of Old Kent Road and beyond. These are exciting times for Southwark indeed.

Transport has always been a problem in Southwark. We have a disjointed rail network run by separately by the same company, Govia Thameslink. These services seem to mostly serve commuters from outside the London area. We have an Overground service which runs only every 15 minutes with a Jubilee service which glides into the very north of the Borough. Our most important service is our desperately overcrowded buses on packed, polluted roads.

The northern boroughs are lucky with a complex web of tube lines and Overground services while we have the Victoria Line and Bakerloo line halting in zones 1 and 2. It reminds me of the feeling you get when you go down stairs but there were less steps than you thought. South London is always brought short by its underground network.

As excited as we are about the Bakerloo Line extension, it has also been disappointing to many.

This is especially true of the hardpressed commuters from Peckham and Camberwell. They were hoping for some relief from the overcrowded bus and rail services only to see the extension sail past to Lewisham.

In fact, when you look at the map the new line will slice across the Borough rather than serve it. The southern population centres are still left without fast convenient transport services forming an obvious transport desert island in the TfL map.

We need to think creatively about how we resolve these issues. Bringing the rail network into TfL control is a start, this will be the only way of getting regular Metro services into central London.

Improving the connection between Bakerloo, Northern and main line services at Elephant and Castle would really help physically plug some of our southern centres into the underground network.

We should do an audit of all disused train stations to see which could be reopened. For small platforms at non connecting stations we easily reactivate the service with a small running cost, such as Camberwell Station on main line services. And this is just off the top of my head.

With the Bakerloo line heading South East and Crossrail 2 heading South West Southwark’s most densely populated areas seem to be missing out. Let’s think creatively and start to open South Southwark up to the rest of the city.

AFTER A seven year hiatus London Bubble are back with their legendary park promenade productions - this year Tales From The Arabian Nights, a reprise of their first ever promenade piece back in 1994, writes Michael Holland...

Art from the soapbox ARTWORK BY the late Joe Bent will form part of Soapbox, an exhibition at ASC Gallery about political campaigning in Southwark more than 50 years ago.

Joe was the son of John Spencer Bent who was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in Ypres during the First World War. Born Spencer John Bent after his father, Joe played a big role in Southwark’s political life during the 1950s and 1960s, campaigning tirelessly and standing in both general and GLC elections for the Communist Party. A great public speaker, he could often be seen on Sundays at his pitch on the corner of Dawes Street and East Street, Walworth’s very own Speakers’ Corner.

Soapbox brings together a previously unseen collection of Bent’s etchings that contrast with a life spent campaigning in public. Photographs from former union official, Graham Stevenson’s collection, Southwark Local History Library and Marx Memorial Archive make up the many layers of this exhibition. They will be displayed together with items from the fascinating personal archive of Tony Farsky, a contemporary of Joe’s, and oral histories recorded for the project.

The complexity of the tales flew over the heads of some of the younger audience members but the music and spectacle of the production ensured they kept their eyes on the action; and continuously striking camp and moving on also kept ennui at bay for the little ones. With its Southwark Park shows now over, the London Bubble caravan moves on to Greenwich Park for a longer run.

“I had often heard people in Walworth talk about Joe Bent’s campaigning and public speaking, and was visiting his partner Maureen Tyson one day to see if she had any memorabilia relating to Joe’s political work. Instead she showed me a portfolio of his artwork. That’s how the idea for an exhibition started.

ASC Gallery seemed like a natural home for the work because of its location so close to where Joe used to stand and campaign in East Street” In addition to the exhibition, thanks to funding from Faraday Ward Neighbourhood Community Council, the Soapbox project also includes workshops with InSpire Youth Arts and local young people in which they can learn how to present their views and listen to the ideas of others.

All the fun of the fair The Rose Playhouse is a magical venue and a fitting space for all the trickery that is ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Upon entering the auditorium the players create a fairground atmosphere - ‘Pin the tail on the Donkey’ being popular.

I’m always curious as to how the Rose Playhouse will present Shakespeare with the Globe just around the corner – rarely do they fail to be inventive, and tonight was no exception.

Set in contemporary times this story of the supernatural, mistaken identities, love, illusion and nature is packed with energy from each member of the cast.

Sydney Aldridge playing ‘Bottom’ and ‘Helena’ seemed to be on the stage almost continually. Hats off to her for her vigour throughout! Puck (Elinor Machen – Fortune) moved across the stage with physical dynamism.

The choreography for the whole production was precise and not easy to achieve in the small space. A great job thanks to Ian Hathway. The fight scene between Leander (Nick Oliver) and

Demetrius (Clark Alexander) was hilarious. Watching two grown men fight in the background like schoolboys worked beautifully as Helena and Hermia (Rhiannon Sommers) bickered over their loves whilst long held resentments rose up from childhood.

Crying for Argentina I WAS not sure how to feel upon learning that one of the quintessential West End hits was returning to London. There is often a danger of harsh comparisons in such cases. Given the stellar names who have filled the fallen heroine's shoes, there was always going to be an element of risk. However, I must say these fears proved only partly founded. For those looking for big theatrical set pieces and emotion by the bucket load, this latest incarnation of Evita doesn't disappoint, writes Matt Baker...

I will say that Evita has never been my favourite from the Tim Rice and Lloyd Webber canon. I never really felt like I was on anyone's side in the story, and struggled to root for the heroine. That being said, and forgive the maudlin sentiment, 'Don't Cry for me Argentina'

brought a tear to my eye, and I stood and clapped at the end along with everyone else. Nevertheless, I rather think the occasion moved me, and the piece less so.

That isn't to say that there weren't outstanding performances. Gian Marco Schiaretti, was an engaging Che, and for me was the vocal highlight. Emma Hatton is interesting but struggled to find real power when high notes were called for, and that stopped the music from building in intensity, so you felt tripped up each time she struggled with a high phrase.

For such a flamboyant show I felt the set looked a bit drab, taking away from the much needed sense of occasion.

All in all a good night, but not one that lived up to great name, and the great spectacular we all remember.

First follies at National

IT’S 1971, New York. There’s a party on the stage of the Weissman Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few

flawless and fierce as ‘Hermia’ launched across the stage…I did worry she would lunge over the rail and into the abyss of the theatre’s Elizabethan ruins.

My partner was lucky enough to be offered ‘Candy Floss’ from ‘Puck’ who watched gleefully as the chaos began. He was starving so thank you! Sugar, pandemonium, and fairies, anyone who knows me would say this was a match made in Heaven or ‘Dreamland’.

The ‘Mechanicals’ play within a play was comical with an unsuspecting audience member called upon to play ‘Wall!’ Well done that man!

If you’ve never seen Shakespeare or had no interest, the boisterous fun of a condensed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is the perfect way to start. It doesn’t look as though we’re getting much of a summer so go and have a laugh at the Rose instead!

It was hard to tell if they had a full house when the audience is a moveable feast scattered around grassy knolls awaiting something to happen to the king, but there weren’t many portable seats remaining when we set off on our Middle Eastern adventure around Southwark Park.

Our caravan of travellers fortunately included a mobile bar selling Arabic exotica such as Turkish Delight, dates, peanuts and, er, Peroni. All good stuff to keep our energy levels up as we followed the ins and outs of the stories being played out and the performance as it moved to different places around the park.

With a blend of masque, music, movement, magic and mirth several tales were told, with only a few performers creating a cast of thousands.

Those of us who have read the books will recall the stories of the Princess caught in flagrante with a goat before bed-hopping into another’s arms and charms, much to the chagrin of her father the King; the fisherman’s yarn,

Including such classic songs as Broadway Baby, I’m Still Here and Losing My Mind, Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical is staged for the first time at the NT. Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies in this dazzling new production.

Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, the production is directed by Dominic Cooke. Winner of Academy, Tony, Grammy and Olivier awards, Sondheim’s previous work at the NT includes A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd and Sunday in the Park with George.

Follies is designed by Vicki Mortimer, with choreography by Bill Deamer,

musical supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, additional orchestrations by Josh Clayton, musical director Nigel Lilley, lighting design by Paule Constable and sound designer by Paul Groothuis.

The original production of Follies premiered on Broadway in 1971, where it was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, and won seven. The show premiered in London in 1987, and has been revived around the world many times to great acclaim.

Follies is on at The Olivier Theatre, Upper Ground, South Bank, SE1 9PX from 22 August until 3 January 2018.

Bermondsey sailor joined doomed expedition that led to death in the ice

t was over 170 years ago that Sir John Franklin’s doomed Arctic expedition set sail from England in search of the North-West Passage, writes Becky Morton...

HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were ultimately abandoned after becoming stuck in heavy sea ice and none of the 129 men on board would return.

Search parties continued to look for the ships for 11 years after they disappeared and the mystery surrounding the fate of the crew has fascinated the Victorians and historians alike.

Among those on board was John Cowie, born in Bermondsey in the early 19th century.

A new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, Death in the Ice, seeks to answer some of the questions about what exactly happened to those men on their fateful journey. Jeremy Michell, a curator at the museum, helped to research the background of the voyage and its crew for the exhibition.

Snippets of the crew members’ lives can be found in ship records and other documents like censuses. John Cowie was born in Bermondsey but moved to Chatham in Kent, where he married Eliza Sarah Cowie in 1838.

He was in his early 30s when he joined Franklin’s expedition as an

“able-bodied seaman”, indicating he had previous naval experience. He also worked as a stoker on the ship, shovelling coal into the engine.

The crew came from all over the country but the majority, like Cowie, came from Kent and Greater London as areas like Woolwich and Chatham had significant naval bases. The average age of sailors on the ship was 28 and most came from a workingclass background.

“Life was often more comfortable at sea than on land for someone from a poor family. At least in the navy they were clothed, paid and fed daily,” said Jeremy.

But there were also many dangers.

Records show Cowie had his name tattooed on his arm, which many historians believe was to ensure sailors could be identified if killed in

The exact date of Cowie’s death is uncertain as it is not known whether he was among the nine officers and 15 men who died before the ships were abandoned or those who survived long enough to reach land.

Their deaths are shrouded in mystery and several theories have been put forward. Post-mortems on the bodies of the first three crew members to die, which were perfectly preserved in permafrost, showed high lead levels suggesting they may have died from lead poisoning from tinned supplies or the plumbing system.

Other possible causes include botulism, a bacterial infection which may have been caused by undercooked meats as fuel supplies ran low, or scurvy, which would

have kicked in when the ships were abandoned and food supplies were scarce.

Many were likely to have died from starvation and the extreme conditions. There is also evidence of cannibalism amongst the men from marks left on bodies which resemble the teeth of humans rather than animals.

Despite more than 40 expeditions to find the doomed ships it wasn’t until 2014 that HMS Erebus was discovered off the coast of Canada, followed by the discovery of HMS Terror last year. Dozens of artefacts have been recovered from the wreckages, preserved deep down in the icy water. Many of these objects are on display at the Death in the Ice exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, returned to London for the

first time since the ships set sail in 1845.

Much of HMS Terror, which is in even better condition than Erebus, is yet to be excavated, but archaeologists hope it will uncover more clues about the fate of the expedition, perhaps in the form of documents or journals. But for now many of the details remain a mystery.

“The discoveries have raised more questions than answers,” said Jeremy. “We still don’t know exactly what happened to the ships or how the crew died. The next few years could bring some exciting findings.”

BY THE time I had walked up Anerley Hill to Crystal Palace Market I was ready for a drink.

But Anerley is some hill so all I could manage was water. ‘Cold, and plenty of it, please,’ I rasped, writes Michael Holland...

My lunching companion, Fiona, was already there, equipped with tape measure and writing pad, ready to measure up and take notes! She had somewhat misconstrued my invitation to lunch as some sort of DIY mission!

Don’t ask.

Crystal Palace Market is all about great meat and fish. You can see the elegant swimmers on a bed of crushed ice at the front of the open kitchen, and the menu tells you exactly where the meats come from. Fiona declares she is a vegan straight after the waiter informs us there is no Crystal Palace Market Salad. I coughed, spluttered and took a hefty swig of an extremely smooth Pinot Noir. Fiona sipped on her water.

‘I bet the Goats’ Cheese Croquettes are nice,’ I said hopefully.

Fiona is not a complainer; she’d had a good week and no salad deficit was going to spoil that. The croquettes were actually ‘wonderful’, she said after her first course. They looked good too.

I began with the Seabass and Crab Ceviche. It came with a mango sauce that was both unexpected and very good.

I chose the Lamb Chops (Devon). They were not those petite, one-bite cutlets, but thick and juicy slabs of meat. Beautiful. All three of them.

Bolstered by recent good fortune, Fiona had lots to tell, so I was updated on her ongoing creative projects, council disputes (won), furniture disputes (won), allotment poachers and a device that helps her concentrate more and hear better. I was just about to mention that she misheard me and brought a tape measure to lunch when our main courses arrived.

Across the table was a sea of green.

My fellow luncher had opted for the last remaining vegetable option: Gnocchi with a Creamy Mint and Pea Puree and Green Beans. A plate of gnocchi always looks good to me, even when it is just one colour.

I chose the Lamb Chops (Devon).

They were not those petite, one-bite cutlets, but thick and juicy slabs of meat. Beautiful. All three of them.

And the salad that accompanied the chops had the most delicious dressing. Our server explained that it was created from grain mustard, orange, lime and lemon juices. So simple but so effective. The lunchtime rush had diminished somewhat by now and the sun had broke through the clouds, so we sat chatting and sipping at our respective drinks. Our informative waitress appeared behind me and like a devil on my shoulder uttered those dangerous words of temptation:

‘Would you like to see the dessert menu?’

Fiona, who had been unable to finish off all her gnocchi, made a noise of surrender and mentioned something about being too full, but I’m a professional and made of sterner stuff.

‘It won’t hurt to have a little look, will it?’

From that point on it wasn’t difficult to lure Fiona in. In fact, it was she who chose the Pineapple and White Chocolate Sauce for sharing! It was like a trip back to the days of fondues, except this was chunks of pineapple to be dipped in a sauce of white chocolate. How could you not fall in love with that?

Despite being without key players Ashley Carew and Ibrahim Kargbo, Hamlet raced into an early lead when Anthony Acheampong fed Nana Boakye-Yiadom and he sped away to put the away side ahead.

Nyren Clunis went close to increasing the lead in the 25th minute, before Nathan Green saw his shot blocked.

Gavin Rose’s side did eventually deservedly go two goals up, after Gavin Tomlin crossed for Michael Chambers to get his head to the ball before Dumaka volleyed home.

It could have been 3-0 before the break, but again Clunis was off target from Acheampong’s ball forward.

Clunis missed another chance after the break, and at the other end of the pitch Hamlet goalkeeper Preston Edwards had to be at his best to prevent Michael Chambers finding his own net.

Dulwich made it 3-0 in the 54th minute, when Tomlin’s free-kick deflected off the wall after Dumaka

had been fouled.

Carshalton pulled a goal back through Mickel Miller, but Dumaka restored the three-goal advantage eighteen minutes from time and

Muhammadu Faal made it five in injury-time from Mohamed Mohamed’s perfect through-ball.

The competition, supported by the Henry Surtees Foundation, which was set up by ex-Formula One driver John Surtees in memory of his son, involved about 100 kids building

karts from scratch and then teams racing against each other.

Leonora Surtees, daughter of John, said: “My father spoke passionately about this event. It’s great to see kids from lots of different backgrounds getting involved and having fun, and also thinking that perhaps it might inspire them to do something productive in future, be it in motorsport, carpentry or another discipline.”

Dulwich back in the mix after Worcester win

DULWICH WERE set 180 to win in a rain-affected Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Worcester Park last weekend, and achieved victory by six wickets in the penultimate over.

Dulwich chose to field with rain showers forecast, and got an early reward when Leon Sealy struck with the first ball of the second over. He bowled his ten overs straight through, picking up a second wicket in his fifth over and conceding just 22 runs. James Bridgland also struck in his first over to reduce Park to 46-3 in the tirteenth, and also bowled his ten overs in succession for just 24 runs.

Skipper Rob Hill and Connor Bliss needed seventeen overs to add 45 before Salaar Waqar dismissed Hill in his second over to reduce them to 91-4 in the 30th over.

Waqas Sagar now came in and played a typically aggressive innings of 45 off 55 balls. He had added 48 in ten overs with Bliss before Waqar bowled Bliss for a painstaking 35 off 85 balls. Waqar added his third wicket three balls later, and Sagar became his fourth victim in his last over as he finished with 4-47 off his ten. Assan Crawford-Khan had now joined the attack, and he maintained the pressure by conceding just 21 runs off seven overs for

Phipps and Hamlin, who took over from Lloyd Bradley this summer, saw their side take the lead in the fourth minute against their Southern Counties East Football League Division One clash.

It was a slick move involving four players, Joe Clark combining on the right with Nathan Flaher who worked the ball inside to Billy Shinners. He found the unmarked Ryan Hassan on the left and Hassan finished low into the bottom corner.

Stansfeld were two up by the eleventh the wicket of keeper Ben Davies. Tom Savill ran out Gary Marshall, and the innings closed on 186-9 after 50 overs.

There had been two rain breaks during the innings, both lasting about 30 minutes.

Tea was taken during the second, but four overs playing time were lost. Dulwich therefore had 46 overs to bat, with an adjusted target of 180 to win. Acting skipper Ed Stolle fell in the fourth over, having made thirteen of the first nineteen runs. This brought in Kristian Williman to join Savill, and the pair added 58 for the second wicket in just twelve overs to put Dulwich well ahead of the rate.

Thrilling weekend but Surrey lose out

SURREY LOST to arch rivals Somerset in a thrilling NatWest T20 Blast contest at Taunton on Sunday as James Hildreth swept his side to an against-theodds four-wicket win.

Replying to Surrey's 157-6, the home side appeared down and out at 47-5 in the ninth over. But the experienced Hildreth top-scored with 45 not out and shared in a stand of 69 with Roelof van der Merwe as Somerset reached their target with ten balls to spare.

Surrey are two points behind second-placed Somerset in the South Group.

Both teams have three matches remaining, with the top four in the group going through to the last eight.

Surrey overseas star Aaron Finch said: “We put ourselves in a pretty good position with the ball and then let it slip. We were just five or ten per cent off our game, and that's all it takes to make the difference in these games.

“You know a team like Somerset are going to keep coming at you hard and they had some big hitters down the order, who struck the ball well to drive the game forward.”

On Friday, Aneurin Donald’s 76 off 40 balls under the Kia Oval floodlights helped Glamorgan strengthen their position at the top of the South Group table by squeezing past Surrey by six runs in front of a crowd of 21,256.

Tom Curran almost stole the match for Surrey at the death, his 51 not out from 27 balls making a mockery of 48 runs being required from the last three overs to overhaul Glamorgan’s 181 for six.

In the end, having hit the second ball of Michael Hogan’s final over for six to bring the equation down to nine from four balls, Curran was caught out by two slower balls from the veteran Australian seamer which he swung at and missed.

A scampered two from the penultimate ball left Curran, who hit three sixes and three fours, needing seven from the last ball.

He hit it into the offside, opted not to run but still walked off to an ovation for a courageous attempt with Surrey finishing on 175 for seven.

Curran said: “It is disappointing to lose but it was another great crowd here and it must have been a great game for the neutral.” making his first 50 for the club to finish with 62 not out off 126 balls. CrawfordKhan also made his best first team score with 40 off 69. Waqar calmly hit his first ball for two to bring his side victory with seven balls to spare.

This win lifts Dulwich two places to seventh, and their last two completed matches have now brought them victories over the first and third placed sides in the division. Next week they have a home match against Chessington, who are three places but only eight points above them in the table. Dulwich narrowly lost the first match between the sides, and they will be looking to gain their revenge in the return fixture.

SHAUN WILLIAMS said there was some “satisfaction” despite the defeat to Nottingham Forest last Friday – but admitted it was a “killer” not to take anything from the game.

The Lions missed numerous chances to score at The City Ground, with boss Neil Harris suggesting it was the best the side had played in his time in charge as they repeatedly tore through the Forest defence.

But Barrie McKay took one of the few half-chances Forest created, while Jed Wallace, Aiden O’Brien, Lee Gregory and Steve Morison all missed giltedged opportunities for the away side.

Williams, however, was taking the positives from the performance.

He said: “There was a bit of satisfaction and a bit of disappointment.

The satisfaction was that we played so well, but we’re disappointed we didn’t take the chances we created.

“Overall it was pleasing that we were able to play as well as we did. But it was a killer that we didn’t score.

“It was the first game of the season, so anything could happen. We need to replicate that performance every week and if we do we’ll be okay.

“There’s a lot of luck involved in finishing. It’s about getting that confidence and applying the final touch when you get a scoring opportunity.

“A lot of teams play similarly to Forest, they’re a possession-based team. The way we play they couldn’t really break us down, they only had a couple of chances. “[McKay] was impressive, to be fair, and I think they only plaid about five hundred grand for him. He was really good and the young lad that came on from Everton [Kieran Dowell] was excellent.

Forest performance gives midfielder confidence

“There are a of former Premier League teams in the division, and they all have big backing and great stadiums.

“But I don’t see why we can’t finish mid-table. If we can do that it would be unbelievable.”

Williams faces extra competition for a midfield spot this season, after Harris recruited George Saville and Ryan Tunnicliffe during the summer.

Williams started with Saville at The City Ground, he was impressed with his team-mate’s display.

“He’s a very good player, he had a great game the other night,” Williams said. “He’s tenacious, wins the ball back and can also play when he has it.

“He reads the game well and knows his position. If I go forward he’s aware that he needs to stay back. It’s a good blend.

“If everyone trains well every week it’s up to you on game day to show that you should be starting. It’s good to have that competition and I’m hoping I can keep myself in the team.”

Williams, like a number of Millwall players, is planning for his post-playing career and working on earning his coaching badges.

Millwall’s extended season meant he had to defer the next level, the Uefa B

qualification, the third step on the pyramid.

But he will take it up again later this campaign.

“I completed a coaching badge last year and was meant to do another in the summer but obviously it was a longer season. I’ll take it up again.

“I think I’d enjoy it. I like to read the game so hopefully I could influence other people’s views on it as well.”

MILLWALL CREATED so many scoring chances at The City Ground on Friday night it would take a whole report to describe them.

Standing waiting to use a bank machine in the city centre late on Friday night, a group of Nottingham Forest fans reckoned “Millwall could have won 61”.

That wasn’t an exaggeration but while it was a positive start, the way Forest won the game emphasised what sides at this level are capable of. When Barrie McKay picked up the ball wide on the left the Lions were set up well defensively, but the winger moved infield and then whipped a wicked shot that flew in off Jordan Archer’s near post.

Not many goalkeepers would have saved it, but it was an early example of the quality Archer will face this season.

Archer had little else to do, apart from

holding onto a shot by Ben Osborn. He was beaten again by Zach Clough in the second half but the flag had gone up for offside.

That was after the most controversial moment of the game, after Steve Morison had squeezed home a leftfooted volley at the back post from Jed Wallace’s cross. Morison was already celebrating in front of Millwall fans and had been joined by a number of his teammates when referee Peter Bankes raised his right arm to indicate a free-kick to Forest. It was a very late call that puzzled nearly everyone in the ground. Later, replays showed Lee Gregory had collided with Jordan Smith.

It was probably a 50-50 call and while Lions boss Neil Harris wasn’t entirely happy with the referee’s performance, he wasn’t blaming him for the outcome.

“I really understand the referee’s viewpoint, there is a coming together,” Harris said. “But it’s a coming together, who runs into who and does it affect the goal?

“Just after that incident Fred [Onyedinma] runs down the line and is taken out. There was a coming together,

but there wasn’t a penalty. That’s my argument to the referees’ assessor.

“I go to them with my opinion and they give me feedback. But they can’t change their minds, whether it’s right or wrong.

“You don’t go ranting and raving, you just ask the question. What’s important is that we end up on the end of right decisions this season, that we’re treated on the same level as every other club in the division.

“We were disappointed, but the referee didn’t cost us three points. It was a really good performance but we lost because we didn’t take chances.”

Harris was right. In the first half Morison hit the crossbar from a few yards, Aiden O’Brien sent a header over when he should have scored, and Gregory drew two excellent saves from Smith.

Gregory was then guilty of an awful miss in the 51st minute when he blazed over after Smith had bizarrely thrown the ball straight to Morison on the edge of the box and the Millwall captain had set up his strike partner for what should have been an easy finish with most of

the goal to aim at.

Jed Wallace then missed a one-on-one and, in the 95th minute, substitute Onyedinma couldn’t believe it when his header from two yards went wide of the post.

Wallace was otherwise outstanding, while the other recruit from Wolves this summer, George Saville, gave a manof-the-match performance with an allround brilliant midfield display.

There were lots of positives, but, as Harris admitted afterwards, his side needs to do more than earn hard-luck pats on the back this season.

MILLWALL ARE through to the second round of the EFL Cup – but the cost of their win over Stevenage has yet to be counted.

On the credit side, Tom Elliott scored twice on his full competitive debut as Millwall won their first game of the season.

Fred Onyedinma, after a difficult start, was more difficult to contain as the game went on, and he tormented ex-Lion Joe Martin before setting up Elliott’s opener in the 54th minute as Millwall eventually eased to a routine win.

Tom King put pre-season jitters behind him to make a vital first-half double-save and showed his quick distribution could be a useful weapon.

But all that was overshadowed by injuries to Jake Cooper and Lee Gregory and both are doubts for the league clash with Bolton on Saturday.

Cooper’s injury looked the more serious, the big defender rolling his ankle in the first half and having to go off.

Gregory came on for him but lasted just 36 minutes before he was taken

off and he headed straight down the tunnel with a hamstring problem.

Millwall were two goals up by then and cruising, with Elliott having headed home another cross from Shane Ferguson.

Millwall will assess Cooper and Gregory before the weekend and though they have replacements in Elliott and Byron Webster it is far too early in the season to have to deal with injury problems.

It looked early on on Tuesday night that they would have a big problem getting through to the next round of the competition before Neil Harris’ half-time team-talk, when he said he reminded the players of their quality, did the trick and sparked them to exert their supremacy.

Before the break they were rescued

by King, starting in place of Jordan Archer, when he was in the right place to save from Chris Whelpdale and Matt Godden.

“When you’re not quite at it, and first half we weren’t, and we got carved open down the left-hand side, he made a solid save,” Harris said.

“I was pleased with Kingy, he looked reliable and safe and he kicked well. It was a strong performance.

“Jordan was excellent Friday, but Kingy would be the first to admit he didn’t have a great pre-season. But he looked a lot more focussed and structured in himself and I was really pleased with him.”

This competition is now known as the Carabao Cup, the draw taking place before the start of the season in Bangkok. The new ABBA penalty shootout format is in use for the first time this season, but there was no goal-line technology system in operation at The Den. It wasn’t needed as Elliott powered in his two headers and if Gregory doesn’t recover then Steve Morison will have a powerful aerial ally this weekend.

Harris made nine changes to the side that lost to Nottingham Forest last Friday. Elliott certainly took his chance to impress. Mahlon Romeo also looked sharp and linked up well with Onyedinma when the attacker switched to the right of midfield in the second half.

Ben Thompson, though, epitomised Millwall’s difficulties in the first half as he gave the ball away too easily, perhaps too keen to make an impression with midfield so much

more competitive this season.

Thompson lost his place in the Millwall side towards the end of last season, but Harris denied it was a confidence issue.

“I think he’s finding his way, he’s a young man, he’s an aggressive and tenacious midfield player, a front-foot player,” Harris said. “That’s great, that’s what we need in the team.

“And then when you’ve got the ball, especially in the Championship, you need to have that composure as well.

At times he didn’t show that ability to run after the ball, win it back and then relax and put his foot on it. But that comes with age, we saw George Saville do it, we saw Shaun Williams do it.

“Ben has shown he can do it over pre-season and last season. Ben did well [Tuesday night] but was just a couple of times sloppy on the ball. It’s the first week of the season and people are still finding their range and rhythm.”

Millwall eventually found theirs on Tuesday night, and will hope for good news on Cooper and Gregory before they aim to follow their cup win with their first three points in the Championship on Saturday.

TOM ELLIOTT proved to The Den faithful on Tuesday night he loves the physical stuff – and endeared himself further to Millwall fans afterwards by saying “I’ll go for anything” in the opposition’s penalty area.

Elliott powered home two headers on his full competitive home debut to help Millwall to their first home win of the season in the EFL Cup against Stevenage.

Both his goals were from crosses, a source his manager Neil Harris convinced him he would profit from this season.

“When he signed me he mentioned Millwall had put in the most crosses in the league, and I’d scored the most headed goals,” Elliott explained. “So obviously he had put a plan together and first game here this season it worked out well for him and for me.

“The boys work a lot on crossing, Wozza [David Worrall] has a good cross in him, Fred [Onyedinma], Fergie [Shane Ferguson]. They put the ball on a plate for me and I just did what the gaffer asked of me. It’s all down to them really.

“Obviously I wanted to get off to a winning start and score a few goals, I’m

a striker and that’s what I get paid for. I’m reasonably happy.

“One of my strengths is my aerial ability. When the ball comes into the box I’m not a coward, I’ll go for anything even if it’s near the keeper. I love all that, I had a little sniff [Tuesday] and I’m excited to get more.

“That’s why the gaffer signed me, that’s a big part of my game, the physical presence.”

Elliott was in Harris’ side with Steve Morison and Lee Gregory on the bench ahead of the league clash with Bolton this weekend.

Elliott realised when he joined Millwall it would be a formidable challenge to get into the starting XI, and though he wants to learn from the Lions’ stellar strikers, he isn’t happy to play second fiddle.

“I knew they were two great players,” he said. “I want to play and take every chance I get, but I’m here to learn off those two as well and learn off the gaffer.

“The more I can learn the better chance it gives me to play more games. I do want to play, I’m not going to hide that. But I l know they are two great strikers who score goals – eighteen [for Gregory] and nineteen [for Morison] last season. It’s going to be more rotation and I’ve just got to take my chance and keep learning.

“I’ll never sulk, I’ll always keep working hard and when I get my chance I’ll take it.”

MILLWALL HAVE lost four successive games to Bolton, haven’t scored in those games, and last season were comfortably beaten twice by Phil Parkinson’s side.

Bolton had the best defence in League One last season but conceded three goals at home in their first Championship game of this campaign, losing 3-2 to Leeds United last weekend.

There was another blow when midfielder Josh Vela had to go off with an ankle injury and he will not be available at The Den on Saturday.

Vela, 23, missed just one game in all competitions last season and scored ten goals from midfield.

The potential absence of centre-back David Wheater with a back injury is another boost for Millwall. Wheater and ex-Lion central-defensive partner Mark Beevers were superb in the games between the sides last season, both of which finished 2-0 to Bolton.

Despite their injury problems, Bolton will be organised and resolute on Saturday, and Harris has pinpointed the areas Millwall need to be at their best to be in with a chance of beating their rivals for the first time in nine games, since a 2-1 win at The Den in October 2012.

“We have to compete, certainly from restarts,” Harris said. “Bolton are very Millwall-like, they play in your face, they can mix it and play direct or pass the ball.

“As we’ve seen over the last couple of years, Phil is a really good manager. He gets his players right at it and they beat us twice last year from being really organised.

“They undid us last year on setpieces, which was unusual for us in the last couple of seasons. They were better than us on dead-ball deliveries.

“We certainly have to stand strong in those moments during the game when it is going to be physical and aerial.

And then when we’ve got the ball we have to use it as well as we did on Friday night against Forest.”

Millwall remain tight-lipped on photo ID scheme MILLWALL ARE not commenting on reports that they will be forced to introduce a photo ID scheme for their travelling supporters this season, writes John Kelly...

The Sun claimed at the weekend that the EFL will force Millwall into the measure, which would be the first such scheme to be imposed on an English club.

The rumoured move comes after the EFL released a statement last Friday saying it was working with Millwall on

“plans to introduce a number of practical measures”, adding “concerns crystallised” following the League One play-off final at Wembley in May when a number of Lions fans entered the pitch after the final whistle.

The statement continued: “The EFL and the club will work on specific measures in relation to Millwall supporters attending fixtures at other EFL clubs. This initiative will see, amongst other things, the EFL and

Millwall collaborate on how tickets are sold for away games.”

Later on Friday, Millwall released an official statement, which said CEO Steve Kavanagh “has been in liaison with Shaun Harvey of the EFL since the League One play-off final in May with a view to repairing reputational damage suffered by both the club and the League as a result of the post-match pitch incursion.

“New measures...are designed to be fair

and proper for the club’s core supporters who provide outstanding backing of the team week-in, week-out, season after season.”

There are fears that Lions fans who want to attend away games will have to sign up for the scheme.

Alison Gurden, a barrister with expertise in football supporter law, wrote on her website the introduction of the scheme would be the “start of a slippery slope” and called for all

fans to resist the potential measure.

Gurden said: “Grassroots campaigns can be hugely effective, and if the ID card idea is to be stopped it will need a well-organised grassroots campaign from all fans who travel to away games, not just Millwall FC fans.

“This affects any fan who travels to away games as it is campaigning against future restrictions which, if you don’t try and stop it now, will happen.”

NEIL HARRIS said the performances of some players in Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over Stevenage had given him “lots to think about” ahead of the first home league clash of the season this Saturday.

Harris could be forced into at least two changes from the side that lost at Nottingham Forest last Friday when Bolton Wanderers visit The Den at the weekend, after Jake Cooper and Lee Gregory went off injured against League Two Boro.

Tom Elliott took his chance after he was given a starting spot up front, heading a brace as Millwall eventually comfortably advanced to the second round of the EFL Cup. Fred Onyedinma, one of nine changes from Friday, was also impressive, setting up the first and giving former Millwall defender Joe Martin a difficult time when he moved to the right of midfield.

Cooper and Gregory will be assessed for ankle and hamstring problems, respectively, before Saturday. If they miss out then Byron Webster will start in the centre of defence and Harris will choose

between Elliott and Onyedinma to partner Steve Morison up front.

“I thought there were some strong performances,” Harris said. “A few people had a point to prove not playing the other day.

“The games come around thick and fast and you have to prepare yourself and put in performances.

“There’s a lot to ponder, it was a strong second half and I was really pleased with a clean sheet and to get through to the next round.

“It’s good to have players in form and it gives me lots to think about for Saturday.”

Millwall were sluggish in the first half against Stevenage, but Harris dismissed the idea some of his players were trying too hard to impress to force their way into his preferred XI. “They should be composed enough,” Harris added. “We didn’t really gel first half and I can think of five or six occasions when we could have been more patient on the ball.

“We did have moments when we were more patient on the ball but then got closed down quickly. Our decision-making was off, that’s probably the best way to sum it up. We picked the wrong choice too many times. Technically, our passing and crossing was poor.

“However, in the second half they found their rhythm and got the goals.”

Williams was one of a number of players the Lions were at risking of losing had they not won promotion in May, but reaching the Championship put them in a better financial position to agree new deals with key players.

The biggest doubts were over Williams and Fred Onyedinma, while the likes of Byron Webster and Lee Gregory would probably have sought moves away.

Williams, who will be 31 in October, is already planning for his post-playing career, and has completed two coaching badges.

He signed a one-year contract during the summer. Asked if another season in League One would have automatically meant the end of his Millwall career, he said: “No, I don’t think so.

He added: “We had been discussing a new contract since December. There were money issues but luckily enough we went up so it stopped being an issue.

“The club gives you an offer but you might not be happy with it. I wasn’t willing to take a pay cut after playing so well. It is a job, at the end of the day.

I’ve got two children now and I’m not getting any younger. You’ve got to make the most of it while you can.”
