SOUTHWARK COUNCIL could be landed with a £100million bill if sprinklers are recommended for all of

its housing.

The borough's housing chief admitted she had "no qualms" about forking out the huge sum to keep residents safe, after a fire safety expert was called in to carry out a review of Southwark's housing stock.

However, Councillor Stephanie

Cryan, deputy council leader and cabinet member for housing, called on the Government to fund local authorities for additional fire safety measures such as sprinklers – or allow them to borrow more.

For fourteen years we have recognised Southwark as London’s most historic borough

F

OR THE past fourteen years the News is proud to have been one of the founders of the Blue Plaque scheme here in Southwark.

After nominations have been vetted and checked, a shortlist of seven has now been drawn up for people to vote on.

The scheme came about after the News and Southwark Heritage Association tried to find a way around English Heritage’s strict criteria, that a building must be standing and the person dead for them to qualify.

The latter was not really a problem, but the idea that so much of our rich heritage could not be recognised because a building was no longer there was not acceptable to us. So, we invited Southwark Council to join us in drawing up our own Blue Plaques and getting local people to vote.

The truth is much of our physical heritage was destroyed in the Blitz, but it is perhaps the 1960s and ‘70s architects who did the most damage.

Our scheme has allowed the likes of Charles Dickens, Geoffery Chaucer and Charlie Chaplin to be honoured on our streets, but also less well-known historical figures like Phyllis Pearsall, the inventor of the A-Z. In 1935, Pearsall couldn’t find her way to a party in Belgravia so decided to make a completely new map of London, which she did by getting up at 5am each morning and walking every one of London’s 23,000 streets – a distance of 3,000 miles. The result was the A-Z, the first street atlas of London.

In fact, it is testimony to the scheme that we cannot mention all of the Blue Plaques that we have managed to get up across the borough.

There are now over 50 of our Blue Plaques installed and a few years ago with so many put up with the backing of local people and visitors in their thousands - we decided that the time was right to give the accolade to just one person, place or event each year. So it’s important that people still go out and vote.

Our current seven might not be as well known as Dickens or Chaucer, but we hope it will inspire you to find out more.

Without our Blue Plaque scheme the places you walk past each day would be just any old street or building. Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark News, with the support of the Southwark Council, have changed that forever – let’s continue to do that and hold our heads up proudly as London’s most historic borough.

Historic race will see watermen race 30 tonne vessels along Thames

STRONG-ARMED riverworkers will race historic barges weighing up to 30 tonnes each along the Thames this weekend.

Around twelve teams of four to six members will be battling against each other as part of the 42nd Thames Historic Barge Driving Race.

The 90 minute race will begin in Greenwich at 1.30pm on July 15 and will follow a seven mile course to Westminster Bridge.

Each barge taking part will be nearly 100 years old and will weigh up to 30 tonnes.

They will be manned under 15ft oars by crews of freemen and apprentices of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen.

The crews’ navigational skills will be put to the test as each barge has to collect at least one pennant flag from a moored barge along the course, as they navigate the river’s currents.

The event commemorates the skills of traditional Thames watermen and lightermen who used to move freight around on the Thames by barge,

under the power of oars (or sweeps), using the strong tidal currents of the River Thames alone.

The movement of cargo by this method was used until the closure of London’s docks in the 1970s.

This year, Admiral Alan West, Baron West of Spithead GCB DSC PC, who was the First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff between 2002 and 2006 and is also president of the Thames Barge Driving Trust, will assist in handing out the winners’ trophies.

Four in hospital after ‘terrifying’ fire guts home in Peckham street www.southwarknews.co.uk/news

FOUR PEOPLE, including a couple in their seventies, were rushed to hospital on Monday morning after a ‘terrifying’ fire ravaged a terraced house in Wingfield Street.

A statement from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said three people were evacuated from the building via their neighbour’s house and into the back garden.

A woman who lived next to the burned-out house told the News: “It was terrifying.

“I could hear the granddaughter screaming ‘get out, get out’. And the son was running around trying to tell people to get out of their houses.

“I looked out of my window and I could see black smoking pouring from theirs.

“I just grabbed my daughter and the dog and ran up the road with no shoes on.”

Police confirmed on Wednesday that the elderly couple were in a “stable condition” but remained in hospital.

The neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “The lady is very friendly. She would do anything for anyone. She would give you her last crust. And the husband is very fit and swims every day.

“And she goes to church every Sunday. She’s a beautiful, lovely lady.

“I have a daughter with special needs, and the lady would always

help me look out for her whilst she’s playing in the garden.”

The neighbour also said she was grateful for how many of her neighbours came out from their homes and offered to take her in, and offered tea and toast to the fire fighters.

The LFB said the fire was extinguished by 4:45am. 35 fire fighters attended from station in Peckham, New Cross, Old Kent Road and Brixton.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Police have confirmed that a woman aged 44 was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, after they were called to the scene at 2:45am. She has since been released from custody but remains “under investigation”.

Stranger ‘walked into home Hamlet’s future ‘put in danger’ by council not deciding on new stadium and took off his shorts’

THE CHAIRMAN of Dulwich Hamlet has said the football club’s future has been put “in danger” by Southwark Council’s refusal to approve plans for a new stadium at Champion Hill.

Tensions between the club and the council have been mounting since spring 2016, when a planning application was submitted to build a new stadium and club facilities, partially sited on neighbouring Greendale Fields.

But the planning application remains unanswered, and the club’s development partner, Meadow Residential, has sought a planning appeal over the council’s indecision, which due to be heard by a government planning inspector in December.

Club chairman Liam Hickey told the News that Southwark’s refusal to approve the club’s new stadium (twinned with plans for 155 new flats beside it) would make the club’s future “unsustainable”.

Liam said: “The council has admitted that our current stadium requires significant investment and that we are in an unsustainable position.

“The buildings and stands really need refurbishing and there are flood lights that are thirty years old.”

Without a new stadium, it is feared that club and it supporters fear it will be unable to muster the investment needed to explore renovating the current stadium, while the possibility of relocating elsewhere in Dulwich has also been ruled out as too expensive.

“People look at the footfall we get and assume the club must be doing alright, but our accounts are all public. Our rent bill

is very high on the site and we have been living on short-term leases since we moved here,” Liam added.

Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust has also raised concerns that the council may not renew its lease on the site, which is due to expire in November – before the appeal is due to be heard in December.

Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the council “supports” the club, but argued that the current situation “does not stop the club operating from its current premises”.

Cllr Williams added: “The current proposals do not comply with the council’s planning policy, most significantly in the delivery of affordable homes and protection of green space. We will wait for the decision of the planning inspectorate and work towards the best outcome possible for all parties.”

A BERMONDSEY dad has warned other parents not to leave their doors open – after a stranger walked into his home and began undressing.

The father, who lives on the Kirby Estate, was at work when his partner called to tell him a man had walked into their flat and begun taking his belt and shorts off.

His partner had left the front door ajar while the couple’s daughter played nearby and as she was putting their younger child to bed, she heard someone enter the flat but they did not respond when she called out to them.

“She walked out into the hall and there was a man standing there and he had taken his belt off and was starting to take off his shorts,” said the father-of-

two. “She started shouting ‘get out of my house’ and kicking him and she managed to get him out.

“Our next door neighbour ran after him and caught up with him at Four Squares Estate and he said he had been looking for a different number.

“It was quite frightening really; she is quite on edge every time the gate goes and every time someone walks over the drain outside because it makes a noise – and I’m sat looking at every single bloke that walks past that looks like him.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “We were called to the estate at 7.50pm on June 30. It was reported that a male entered a premises and ran off when confronted by the occupier. A member of the public chased the man. Officers attended. No one was injured. There were no criminal offences. A report was made for intelligence purposes.”

Prime Ministers pay visit to market one month after attack

Theresa May joined by Australian PM on tour and talks with traders

THERESA MAY and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Borough Market, where eight people were killed in a terror attack last month, on Monday.

The pair met with first responders and traders during the visit on July 10, accompanied by Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle and Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick.

Prime Minister Turnbull was visibly moved after speaking to the two police officers who gave CPR to Sara Zelenak – an Australian nanny killed in the attack, who had been working in Herne Hill.

Australian Kirsty Boden, a nurse at Guy’s Hospital, was also killed in the attack after rushing to help other victims.

The two Prime Ministers met with chair of Borough Market trustees, Donald Hyslop, as well as traders at the market – including Matthew Jones of Bread Ahead, Jack Applebee of Applebee’s Fish, and greengrocer Paul Wheeler of Paul Wheeler Fresh Supplies.

Jack Applebee – who was working on the night of the attack and stood just metres from the terrorists – said he talked to the Prime Ministers in detail about the events of that night.

“Everyone’s come together and that’s been the main focus point of it all really, because the community spirit amongst everyone has been phenomenal so we were just talking to her [Theresa May] about that,” he told the News.

“I introduced a couple of policemen who tried to give CPR to two Aussies on the night as well, so they were talking about them and everyone was just going over detailed events for both Prime Ministers to get an idea of exactly what happened and how everyone was affected.

“We had 40 customers in there [on the night of the attack]. We saw the terrorists and we got the shutter down and we got

the customers all upstairs in the staff room and we all took cover for two hours until we got evacuated.”

Mr Applebee said he was trying to “keep quite strong” but that the tragic events had affected him. “Obviously it does affect you and I’m a bit jumpy and still have a few nightmares, but I’m just trying to get on with it,” he said.

Matthew Jones, a baker and owner at Bread Ahead, said eight members of his staff were working in the bakery on the night of the attack. “I got phone calls – lots of them,” he told the News. “As you can imagine, the phone just went mental and then the next thing you read it on the news. We were talking [to the Prime Ministers] about the incidents of June 3 and how our lives were turned upside down on that night – very quickly the whole world went mad – and how we picked ourselves back up again.”

Mr. Coyle said he hoped Theresa May had listened to the concerns of traders, some of whom faced significant losses after the market was closed for eleven days in the aftermath of the attack.

“It’s about jobs,” he said. “We can’t let anyone lose their job on the back of this – so hopefully she’s heard that message as well. As we were walking around – because the Business Minister Margot James is coming [to the market] on Thursday [today] – that was the focus of the discussion.

“It was great to see MaLcolm Turnbull showing his respects for the Australians who died, but also sending the message out to not only all the Australians here, but all the Australians who still want to come here that we are open for business and there are no security issues and no concerns.”

The market was closed for eleven days after terrorists wearing fake suicide vests rammed into pedestrians on London Bridge shortly before 10pm on June 3, before going on a stabbing rampage which left eight people dead and 48 injured.

Lido’s 80th anniversary celebrations marred by two nights of vandalism BERMONDSEY

Hundreds mark occasion, before break-ins on two consecutive nights

BROCKWELL LIDO has been targeted by vandals two nights in a row, just after celebrating its 80th anniversary.

Brockwell Lido was closed on Sunday and Monday mornings, after it was trashed by vandals overnight on both occasions.

Paving slabs were ripped up and lifeguard seats were tossed into the pool after the facility’s safety alarms were damaged.

“Once again, due to overnight vandalism, the pool is closed,” Brockwell Lido said in a tweet on Monday morning.

“Pool alarms have again been damaged. Engineers have been called to support.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We will update as soon as possible.”

The pool was reopened to the public and business resumed as normal on Sunday afternoon, but was then forced to close again reopening at 2.30pm on Monday.

On Saturday, hundreds of wellwishers celebrated, as a jazz band played alongside the pool, with a giant inflatable for kids and a mass jump-in. The event was attended by local MP Helen Hayes, and the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Marcia Cameron.

Power cut hits homes over night

ROTHERHITHE: Residents were left without power overnight because of a fault with an underground electricity cable this week.

Forty-six properties in Goldsworthy Garden, Silwood Street and Eugenia Road were left without electricity from 3.12pm on Monday, until 10.30am on Tuesday due to the fault.

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks told the News that fridges and freezers should stay cold for up to eight hours after a power cut – but that customers could make a claim on their home insurance for any losses after this period. “Our advice is that customers should keep the door closed and if possible put a blanket over the fridge or freezer which will help to insulate it,” a spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Residents evacuated after fire breaks out in basement

RESIDENTS WERE evacuated to their tenants’ hall after a fire broke out at a five-storey Rotherhithe block on Sunday.

Six fire engines and about 35 firefighters were called to a blaze in a basement on the Silverlock Estate in Rotherhithe New Road shortly after 8.30pm on July 9.

Around 20 people were evacuated from the building and took refuge in a tenants’ and residents’ association (TRA) hall for three hours before they were allowed back into their homes.

David Eyles, treasurer of Silverlock Hall TRA, and Julie Eyles, secretary, opened the hall for residents before handing out tea and coffee and asking paramedics to tend to people.

Gill Davis, chair of the TRA, told the News “that’s what the community is for”.

“You can’t leave residents out on the street at 11 at night,” she said. “There were young children in their pyjamas when you’ve got a tenants’ hall sitting here waiting.”

Ms David added that it wasn’t the first time a fire had broken out at the block.

“Only a year ago I told our resident services officer that there were two garages wedged open with mattresses and I said ‘it’s a fire waiting to happen’,” she said.

“I know they [the fire brigade] pulled a lot of rubbish and mattresses and God knows what else out of the garage.

“When I came down at 7am today [Monday] everything had been cleared away.”

She also praised Livesey ward councillor Richard Livingstone for attending the scene and staying until residents were allowed back into their homes, as well as council officers who

went to see how they could help.

However, the TRA chair said Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, was asked to attend by a resident, but did not.

Cllr Cryan, who is also deputy leader of the council, did not comment on the claim. However, she said: “We take this matter extremely seriously and the council has been in discussions

with residents for some time about this issue. We have responded to residents’ concerns by doing our best to seek a solution to the problem by making regular visits with our homeless services, the police and wardens to support anyone we find.

“We have also been doing our best to ensure the garages are secure and well-lit. Long-term, we are looking at permanent solutions such as getting the garages into a decent condition then bringing empty garages back into use.”

A small part of the basement of the building was damaged by fire but there no injuries were reported.

Fire crews from Deptford, Dockhead, New Cross, Greenwich, and Whitechapel fire stations were called to attend the incident at 8.32pm. The fire was under control by 11.09pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Housing boss says she has ‘no qualms’ spending the money if ‘it’s the right thing to do’ EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL could be landed with a £100m bill if sprinklers are recommended for all of its housing, Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, has told the News in an exclusive interview.

The borough's housing chief admitted she had "no qualms" in forking out the huge sum to keep residents safe, after a fire safety expert was called in to carry out a review of Southwark's housing stock.

It comes after the tragic Grenfell Tower blaze earlier this month, which police believe claimed the lives of at least 80 people.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, who is also Southwark’s deputy council leader, said it could cost almost £100million to install sprinklers in all council housing, with ongoing maintenance, if recommended by the review.

A feasibility study carried out in 2013 after Camberwell’s Lakanal House fire inquests found sprinklers could cost anywhere between £30million and £112million for 103 general need blocks, plus the cost of asbestos removal where required.

Sprinklers were installed in properties housing vulnerable residents, such as sheltered housing and hostels, following the Lakanal fire – but an independent report recommended the council focused on compartmentalisation rather than installing them in all housing blocks.

"If it's the right thing to do then it will be done - we can't use the cost

element to not do anything because that really isn't acceptable," Cllr Cryan told the News.

“But my worry is, if there's no funding from Government on this, it does mean that other things will have to be put on hold or slowed down so I'm calling on Government to either fund us for this or allow us to increase our borrowing on the housing revenue account.

“You can't put a price on safety; Central Government needs to step up to the bottle and they need to actually say 'we are going to help and support you to do this across the country'.”

Cllr Cryan said she herself had grown up living in a tower block on a council estate – and that she did not think they were “inherently” unsafe.

“I loved living in a tower block – I don't think they're inherently unsafe and I think actually in light of what's been happening there will be more checks and measures in place to ensure that safety,” she said.

“The fact is we've spent a lot of time and work making sure that our homes are as safe as they possibly can be and compartmentalisation means that you can stay put even if you are high because the fire brigade should be able to get there and put out the fire, no matter how high it is.

“In tower blocks now, because of new building regulations, any block over 30 metres in height has to have sprinklers, so there are more stringent fire regulations in place for new builds.”

The independent review will look at whether fire safety measures are up to scratch in individual flats in the council's 174 tower blocks, as well as other buildings such as schools and libraries.

Dual inspections will be carried out,

with a fire safety team, a technical manager from the council’s repairs team, and a housing officer present so that any issues picked up can be fixed as soon as possible, rather than going through the usual repairs process.

Any recommendations following the review will be considered for low-rise buildings across the council's housing stock – not just high-rise.

associations, and the NHS have also been encouraged to carry out fire risk assessments.

When asked whether private leaseholders would have to foot the bill for any potential work following the review, Cllr Cryan said she already planned to write to the Housing Minister about her concerns surrounding the issue – and also to Southwark's three MPs, who would pass on her concerns in a letter to the Prime Minister.

The outcome of the review is expected to be made public in a report by autumn.

RESIDENTS HAVE been reassured there is “no immediate danger” after tests revealed flammable cladding on a Bermondsey block.

Tests have confirmed that cladding on Bolanachi Building, in Spa Road/Enid Street, contains aluminium composite material – which has been called into question following the fatal Grenfell Tower fire, in Kensington.

Hyde Housing Group, which owns the building, is also awaiting results of

cladding tests for five other buildings in Southwark, which were expected to be received by yesterday afternoon Wednesday, July 12.

Samples of cladding on Eyott House, Artesian House, Davoll House, Hicks House and Prospect House, all in Bermondsey Spa, have also been sent for testing to see if they are flammable – although it does not contain aluminium composite material.

Fire wardens and other safety precautions have been put in place at all of these buildings and Hyde continues to liaise with London Fire Brigade and other fire safety experts to consider

what the next course of action should be.

“When we sent the cladding samples off for the properties in Southwark, we made sure we wrote to all the residents concerned and introduced roaming safety watch patrols as an extra pairs of eyes and ears,” Carol Jones, director of communications, marketing and public affairs, told the News.

“They are in those buildings 24/7 to make sure that stairwells are kept clear and there isn’t rubbish causing a fire hazard – just as an extra precaution.

“The only building we’ve had test results back for [in Southwark] is

Bolanachi House and that has confirmed it is aluminium composite material cladding.

“We are confident that our residents in that building are as safe as they can be.

“We are still awaiting results for other properties, however Hyde works as a strategic partner with London Fire Brigade and that means we use them for their expert advice throughout our entire London portfolio.

“At the moment we are taking advice from London Fire Brigade and other specialist fire consultants as to what we need to do next because every building is different and constructed differently

and every solution has to be bespoke to the building.

“We’ve asked residents to bear with us while we do more tests and that we will be moving as swiftly as possible.

“Rest assured we are confident that there is no immediate danger.”

Residents are reminded to keep stairwells clear, rubbish off balconies, and to make sure smoke alarms are working.

Hyde Housing wrote to residents in the five Southwark buildings awaiting cladding test results on Tuesday and was still awaiting further advice about Bolanachi Building.

‘Intrusive and thorough’ fire safety tests for Ledbury blocks EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S housing bosses have been forced to admit that fire-safety problems on the Ledbury Estate are far more complicated than first feared, following an intervention by an independent surveyor.

It has been confirmed that “intrusive and thorough” type-four fire-safety assessments will now be carried out in flats, after damning new evidence of firesafety flaws came to light.

Some 200 Ledbury residents attended a meeting on Tuesday night at Camelot School, in which the council started by assuring residents there were “no structural safety issues” with the estate’s four thirteen-storey tower blocks, relating to cracks found in walls of dozens of flats.

The update came from findings of structural surveys by building firm Arup, who presented residents with their findings about the gaping cracks, and which in some cases have been present for more than 30 years.

The cracks were previously acknowledged as a fire-safety risk due to them compromising the compartmentation safety-design of the blocks, which on June 30 triggered the council to hire teams of fire safety wardens to carry out 24/7 patrols of the blocks. Arup’s spokesman said on Tuesday that they did not pose a risk to the structural integrity of the buildings, and would be “filled” soon.

But the mood of the meeting turned when an audience member revealed himself to be an independent fire-safety expert, who has found previously-

undisclosed, wide-ranging issues with the blocks.

Arnold Tarling (chartered surveyor and Association of Specialist Fire Protection member) found during his own inspections of six flats in two of the blocks that further safety risks include: • Flammable polystyrene found between slabs of concrete and flues, “meaning a fire could travel up the building” • Flammable materials found in joints between walls in flats, which should have been fire resistant • Arnold was able to poke metal rods through gaps around cabling and gas pipes travelling between flats and between common areas • Cracks wide enough to fit his hand through, which “no amount of firestopping would be able to fill” Southwark Council’s fire safety manager, David Rowson, addressed Arnold’s findings by saying the council would carry out the type-four fire safety assessment.

The council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for housing, Stephanie Cryan said the following morning that Southwark’s fire safety teams “are already carrying out” type four assessments. Although this had not been communicated to residents.

Cllr Cryan told the News: “I have to be very clear that there are no surprises in any of the points made by Arnold Tarling, these are all matters we have been dealing with for some time, with advice from the best and most up-to-date sources of information. We will continue to investigate and carry out works if and when they are required – both as temporary safety measures and planned, permanent major works. We will keep our residents informed at every step.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust sent samples of cladding from all of its tall buildings, at both hospital and community sites, to make sure it was made of noncombustible material following the Grenfell Tower fire.

The results of the tests revealed the cladding was different to that used on Grenfell and was not made of aluminium composited material.

The trust was told no further action would be needed, and the fire brigade confirmed it had no issues of concern

following a visit to the hospital.

“We have received confirmation from NHS Improvement (NHSI) that cladding used on our buildings is different to that used on Grenfell Tower and is not aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding,” said a spokesman for the trust.

“This follows a review of the building material and technical information we supplied to NHSI and the Building Research Establishment.

“They have confirmed the trust is not required to take further action.

“London Fire Brigade have also confirmed they have no issues of concern following a visit to Guy’s Hospital.”

Government gives Southwark permission to CPO eateries, shops and offices to regenerate arcade

THE GOVERNMENT has given permission to Southwark Council to buy-out businesses in the Peckham Rye Station arcades, in order to clear the site for regeneration.

Planning permission was given in March 2015 to demolish 24 units in the arcades, and build the open square, with shops, a restaurant, takeaway, offices, and public toilets.

The council applied in April for legal powers to compulsorily purchase sixteen properties from landlords in the arcades, from whom permission couldn’t be found by mutual agreement.

After gaining permission from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, the council last week sent letters confirming it to all affected businesses in arcades, and facing out onto Blenheim Grove and Rye Lane. But the council will have to give compensation to the landlords based on the value of the properties.

The council has also given a timetable for the regeneration of the arcades, which is split into three phases.

It says demolition and construction of Phase One will begin with the Blenheim

Work on Phase Two (buildings by the south side below the railway arches, including Jenny’s Cafe) will start “from late 2019”. Phase Three, on the north side of the arches where TSB bank is located, will start “from summer 2020”.

Completion of the entire regeneration is expected by “summer 2021”.

Before the council applied for its compulsory purchase order, only five formal objections were made, including

by Iceland and the TSB Bank, which

previously asked for longer time to relocate.

It is understood that Jenny’s Café, Peckham Rye Dental Care, and TSB, have since been offered new units in the completed square.

Plans have also been secured to redevelop a row of garages in Bournemouth Close. Named ‘Peckham Springs’, the site beside the Atwell Estate will house the displaced salons from Blenheim Grove, as well as new bars and cafés.

‘I believe it will work, if they look after us’

ADAM MIZOU, owner of Station Barbers, and who sublets unit 810 in Blenheim Grove, told the News: “In the beginning we were very worried. But now we think, if local people want this project to happen, then we’re happy as long as we get looked after. Southwark seem very fair and they are trying their best.”

The 28-year-old, who previously expressed fears about being forced to close when he had only just opened for business in early 2015, added: “The council has said they will offer

me help me relocate to a new place somewhere nearby.

“I will have to move within a year or two, and I will probably have to change my name. I can’t really be called the Station Barber if I’m moving away.

“I will need to go somewhere where there is footfall to get my type of customer.

“For me, I believe it will work, if they look after us.

“They’ve kept us up to date with letters, and they chat to us when something comes up.”

Police ask council to consider suspending licence after crowd of 200 try to get into club

THE CORONET Theatre will continue operating, but with heightened security and events pulled from its schedule, following an emergency review of its licence.

Councillors on the council’s Licensing Sub-Committee reviewed the historic venue’s licence on Thursday, July 6.

The review was requested by the Met Police, following a large-scale fight that happened outside its doors in the early hours of Sunday morning, July 2.

A Dogs Unit and Territorial Support were deployed to guard the venue after 2am, as some 200 people, without tickets, tried to force entry into a sold-out clubbing event. A 25-year-old was injured though no arrests were made.

Lit London, who promoted the clubbing event that night, released a statement blaming the violence on “a small group of frustrated people who did not have pre-sale tickets”.

consider suspending the licence held by Elephant Music Limited, who manage the 2,600-capacity venue. But councillors have allowed the venue to stay open, on the condition that interim measures are taken.

Three events “that are considered a risk (by the premises) and attract a specific type of person” have been cancelled with full refunds offered. They include:

• Project X, Summer Break Edition (July 7, 2017) • Dancehall v Soca, Bikini vs Gym Chest Foam Party (July 22, 2017) • PJ Lingerie Party “the UK’s biggest Lingerie and Pyjama Affair Party in London” (July 29, 2017) All other events are still scheduled to take place. But the venue has been ordered to increase its security staff for

night events. The Coronet will now have a security-to-guest ratio of 50 to one, instead of the 75 to one as stipulated under its licence. Staff will also have to improve its queuing system.

During the violence on Sunday morning, the police claimed that guests had waited outside for over two hours, and some tried to break in via the railway lines and emergency exits.

They also referred to other recent disturbances at the venue. On February 26 a “large group of males” broke in, one believed to be carrying a gun. On May 13 there were reports of 100 people fighting outside the Coronet.

The police said in their evidence to the committee that fifteen reports of violent incidents had been made about events at the Coronet in 2017.

Minutes from the review meeting said the Coronet’s managers told the committee they had “an excellent working relationship with the licensing authority and the police and overall, the premises were well run”.

The venue’s management “advised that

it was not necessary to suspend the licence, nor was it appropriate and proportionate”.

The managers of the Coronet were approached for comment but they did not reply.

The police did not put forward suggestions that any terms of the licence had been breached, but the committee “had concerns about the extent of police resources that had been taken up, the time it took to control that disorder, and finally the lack of resources that had been left available for the rest of the borough if a major incident had occurred”.

A second, more detailed review of the venue’s licence by Southwark Licencing Sub-Committee will also take place on July 31.

The Coronet is due to close in January, when a one-year extension of its lease with landlord and property developer Delancey will end. The venue is then set to be demolished in 2019 as part of the regeneration of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.

Flats plan stokes fears over Coal Line’s future

THE DESIGNERS behind the Peckham Coal Line have raised fears that a developer’s plans to build homes on an abandoned stable block off Consort Road may scupper their project.

Over £100,000 was crowdfunded for the Coal Line in November 2015, to create a scenic, suspended walking-andcycle route on the old coal sidings which run beside the railway from Queen’s Road to Rye Lane.

But a new planning application submitted by Bluecroft Property to build nine houses in the Victorian yard (below the railway lines between Consort Road and Gorton Road) has upset the Coal Line’s designers.

The project’s Nick Woodford told the News that Bluecroft – who bought the land earlier this year – will make their plans to renovate the stable blocks into a community space impossible.

Although the proposed nine new homes would not impede the coal line route, Nick said his team was “not consulted”, and was “surprised” to learn of Bluecroft’s plans only on Monday, despite details of the Coal Line

proposals being in the public domain since 2016.

“We want Bluecroft to be more ambitious with their proposals,” Nick said. “We think it’s crucial that the stable block be preserved, as a part of this area’s local heritage, and kept for public use. Bluecroft’s homes should be build taller, and be affordable, which won’t mean demolishing the stables.

“We would be happy to collaborate with them, but we were not consulted, even though our plans have been publicly available for more than a year.”

A Bluecroft spokesman said: “Our client has had a detailed condition

survey of the buildings on the site which has found them to be in a poor state of repair - the buildings are not listed or locally listed. The approach has therefore been to propose demolition and the creation of new-build blocks.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the authority “supports” the Coal Line, and also called on Bluecroft to “work with us and the Coal Line” to deliver the project.

Nick and a Bluecroft spokesman have confirmed that both sides will hold talks on Friday.

Coffee shop owner issues appeal to public after burglars get away with antique portrait and till

THE OWNER of a Bermondsey coffee shop is asking the public to help find an antique photograph of his great-great uncle after it was stolen during a break-in.

Staff at Crol & Co Coffee, on the corner of Dunton Road and Lynton Road, returned to work on the morning of Monday, July 10, to find several items had been stolen during a break-in.

Thieves managed to make off with the shop till, an iPhone, an oil painting of a young girl – and a large framed antique photograph of co-owner Nico Renson’s great-

great Uncle Monty.

The picture of the ancestor had become a shop mascot and was described as a “great loss” by Nico’s partner, and co-owner, Vanessa Crol.

“No one got hurt and most things are replaceable, so that is the main thing,” she told the News.

“We are just really sad about the picture as he became such a part of the cafe, people were always asking who he was and it was really nice to be able to say that he was actual family.”

The break-in occurred some time around 4am and 5am on Monday, July 10. The Crol & Co team have created the hashtag #findmonty in the hope of finding the picture.

MP to co-chair homelessness group

NEIL COYLE MP has been elected as co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Ending Homelessness.

The Labour MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark was elected alongside Colchester Conservative MP William Quince.

The APPG for Ending Homelessness was set up in response to growing numbers of people rough sleeping and upward trends in the number of homeless applications.

The group holds regular meetings with its officers to discuss the issues which cause and escalate

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Coyle said: “Homelessness is a massive issue locally. London Bridge and the Elephant have many rough sleepers but from the Brandon Estate in Walworth, to the Tissington in Rotherhithe, it is a visibly growing problem.

“The Government is ignoring the crisis despite homelessness doubling since 2010. It is unacceptable to force charities and churches to pick up the pieces and I welcome this opportunity to be able to lead this group which will scrutinise the causes and effects of homelessness, and put forward recommendations on how we can end the problem.”

CHILDREN FROM seven Southwark primary schools became traders for the day after setting up shop at Borough Market.

The young marketeers sold their school-grown fruit and vegetables on July 6 to raise funds for FareShare – a charity providing meals for vulnerable families across the UK. Held in partnership with School Food Matters, the Summer Sale event brings together London’s food community to teach schoolchildren about the importance of fresh, sustainable food and to help them understand where it comes from.

Now in its sixth year, the School Food Matters’ Young Marketeer programme has seen almost 420 children sell their school-grown fruit and vegetables at Borough Market.

The sales have raised more than £4,500 for FareShare, providing more than 14,000 meals for UK families.

With the help of funding from United St Saviour's Charity, this year’s project began in the spring, when pupils were taught tips by Blue Peter gardener, Chris Collins.

They were also given insider advice about how to set up a stall, and treated to a tour to meet the market traders.

This year’s Summer Sale included market stalls from: St George’s Cathedral Primary, John Ruskin Primary, Boutcher Primary, St Jude’s Primary, Alfred Salter Primary, Charles Dickens Primary, and Peter Hills Primary, all in Southwark. Surrey Docks Farm also took part.

New Orleans’ 8-piece brings their brass to the Brockwell Park grass

T

he Hot 8 Brass Band loves performing in London during the summer, writes Laura Burgoine...

Band leader Bennie Pete says the cooler weather offers a relief from the intense heat back home in New Orleans. But intensity is something the musicians are all too familiar with.

In their 20 year history the brass band has been rocked by tragedy in almost every form. They lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina, they’ve lost four band members – two of them brutally murdered, one shot by police, and one killed by a heart attack that could have been a drug overdose and their trumpet player lost both his legs after he was hit by a car while changing a tyre on a highway. Spike Lee included them in his Katrina documentary When the Levees Broke and The Wire creator David Simon told the story of their snare drummer’s murder in his 2010 HBO series Treme, which focused on the New Orleans neighbourhood in the wake of the Hurricane. Tragedy has been a constant alongside their success but, come hell or high water, the Hot 8 Brass Band keeps on playing.

When I called up the band’s co-

founder and tuba player Bennie Pete, he calmly told me he was having a blood transfusion but was happy to chat while he was having his treatment. His gentle speech kind of meanders like a piece of jazz music; he has much to say but he’s in no hurry. “We’re looking forward to coming back to London and seeing our fans and having fun playing for the crowds,” Bennie begins. “We love to spend our summers over there. It’s real hot in New Orleans now: steaming hot, high humidity. We travel as eight but there’s about twelve of us in the band –some can’t travel due to health issues and some of them just don’t like to be on the road, they got a wife at home and you know…” his voice trails off.

Their music –a brassy, high octane melting pot of hip hop, jazz and funk - includes covers of Snoop Dogg’s What’s My Name and Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, the latter of which got them signed by UK label Tru Thoughts and sparked their 2007 debut album Rock with the Hot 8.

“We’re inspired by the fans and by ourselves. In different performances we wanted to entertain with hip hop or reggae and we just wanted to experiment and at some point put our

own tag on it,” Bennie reflects. “Our creativity has let us grow, we have a large sum of freedom –sometimes that takes us to spiritual or even gospel. The music allows us to keep enjoying what we do.”

Playing in brass bands in high school, the group formed in 1995 and “played for anyone who’d listen,” Bennie chuckles. “We did a lot of street performance, we’d play for anyone, and one of the dreams and visions of the band was to have a large audience,” he says. “Our music sounds great now but when we started I can tell you it wasn’t the case! They wasn’t listening. We had to overcome a lot of fears, and put in the work, and listen to people, and be pushed to the limits.”

Their musical education came off the streets rather than from formal education. “To be honest, it’s a lot of hands-on training and knowledge you get when you train with great musicians, people in the city, on the road,” he recalls. “We knew one album. We called on the older guys – great musicians known for their craft.

They were just regular people to us and we never understood how big they were. They would talk to us, give us information that we wouldn’t

get in school about the history and the culture of music in New Orleans.

It was a blessing in disguise,” hr says.

In their hometown they’re known for playing parades and funerals. “Oh we have a parade for everything!”

Bennie says. “You’ll have politicians who throw a parade when they want you to vote for them. Of course that’s another issue because they might hire a band to perform for them and they actually stand for making cuts against music.”

If music is a way of life in New Orleans, so is the constant threat of disaster. “Hurricanes are always a threat. Hurricane season is coming round now; there’s bad weather down in the swamps. Anything can always happen,” Bennie admits. “When Katrina was coming I personally thought it was just another hurricane coming and that there’d be some rain and bad weather. I didn’t want to leave.”

Two of the band members left the day before the infamous storm hit and reluctantly Bennie agreed to leave too. “I said ‘alright, come on’ and I packed a bag with a few garments and headed off. I never thought I was going to be gone so long,” he recalls.

Bennie went to Montgomery in Alabama and after that to Atlanta, Georgia. “My home was lost. Back in the city they had military out and they wasn’t letting anyone back in. We were able to come back to check on the house a few months later. A few of the guys from the band stayed here and tried to survive for themselves.

You definitely wanted to come back but come back to what? There was no gas, no grocery stores; you needed to live. People was coming home, trying to see what they could save; it really brought the community together. If anyone had water or food they shared it and that felt good.”

I ask what it’s like now. “Kind of rough,” Bennie replies -not as a complaint but in a completely matter of fact manner. “In the midst of all that it’s rough. New Orleans is divided into the have or have nots.

Some areas in the city have up and gone. I can walk to neighbourhoods and houses are still like they were when Katrina hit.”

“For the most part everyone is trying to rebuild. The music has always been here. I don’t think it ever left.”

Nancy Timon (U15) and Amber Rose Murphy (U19) travelled to New Orleans for contest, where over 4,000 competitors took part from all over the world. Our girls managed to achieve 17th and 21st in the huge competition and we are so proud of them both.

Amber and Nancy are both open championship winners, along with class mates Maisie Ryan and Ella Lane.

Maisie is now on her 5th championship title at the tender age of 11 and only 3 years as part of DWD. Between the team they have achieved: - 17 Prelim wins - 10 Championship wins - 3 World Qualifiers - 2 World Recallers - Top 10 all Ireland and 2 x top 10 in the Nation.

Our team train 4/5 times per week so Irish dancing does become a lifestyle choice for them and it's fantastic to see their hard work paying off.

Deborah Whelan Dance boasts some

of the finest talent in the Irish Dance world. The teaching staff have reached the very top within their field in both solo and team dancing, winning World and All Ireland titles. It is our vision to pass this high level of achievement and standard to the next generation of Irish Dancers.

At the age of just 12, Deborah won her first All-Ireland Championship title in Ennis, the first of 2 All Ireland titles. She continued gaining titles internationally including British National Champion x 3, European Champion, All Scotland Champion x 3 , Great Britain Champion x 4, Southern England Champion x 5 and many more. Deborah reached the pinnacle of her career when she was crowned World Champion in 2002.

Deborah’s professional dance career began when she was invited to join Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance” in 2004. She was the youngest member of the cast.

All football fans are against extremism

AS A Millwall season ticket holder, it was heartening to see your headline about the Football Lads’ Alliance (FLA) bringing football supporters to together unite against extremism, Millwall and West Ham Fans Join Thousands on March Against Extremism’, (Southwark News June 29, 2017).

Like I am sure all of your readers, I was appalled by the terror attacks of recent months and inspired by the heroism of Lions' fan Roy Larner.

However, I was disappointed that the FLA and your reporter only highlighted attacks carried out by Islamic fundamentalists. Despite saying they were against all extremism there was no mention of the horrific events at Finsbury Park mosque when innocent Muslims were mown down or the death of MP Jo Cox at the hands of a right-wing extremist last year.

It would have been great if there had been a Muslim speaker at the demonstration to present a truly united front.

Also as a female football supporter I also wonder what part I have to play in a “lads alliance”—the very name seems to exclude half the population!

These are dangerous times. As well as the threat of terror there are frightening levels of Islamophobia (in East London where I work there have been 2 acid attacks on Muslims recently). I, therefore, welcome the FLA’s calls of unity but want an alliance that unites ALL football fans against ALL extremism.

Don’t relax restrictions on tower blocks

IN THE wake of the terrible Grenfell Tower fire, I'd like to encourage your readers to respond to the New Southwark Plan, in particular to the proposal to relax the current restrictions on tower block buildings in the borough.

Southwark argues that the pressing need for new homes means that we should remove the current restrictions which limit where tower blocks can be built. Of course the aspiration to provide high quality, affordable housing is an admirable one, but it needs to be balanced against the protection of existing and future communities.

Allowing a free-for-all on high rise buildings would fundamentally change our neighbourhoods for the worse.

It would expose existing residents to the avarice of developers, who, motivated by high profit margins would seek to utilise CPOs to bulldoze pockets of housing to build high.

It places communities at risk of overlooking, overshadowing, and over-stretching of public services (transport, doctors, schools) which are already under significant strain. And of course there is reason to doubt that new high rises would actually provide decent affordable homes for local people - a shameful proportion of

those at Elephant Park (which replaced thousands of bulldozed council flats) have been sold to Hong Kong investors and sit empty.

The Southwark Plan talks of tall buildings needing to meet excellent design standards, but this is meaningless language that offers no protection. As Grenfell shows us, we need stringent regulations in place to govern buildings, not vague aspirational statements which can easily be exploited by developers looking to maintain a profit margin.

Skyscrapers don’t help communities

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT Councillors share the concerns raised in the News about Labour's plans to remove planning restrictions on tall buildings in various parts of the borough.

This is, obviously, particularly a concern at the moment because of fire safety questions which must now be more carefully considered at the planning application stage. But it is also a concern often raised by communities as tall buildings fundamentally change the character of an area and affect its heritage, light and sense of space.

Tall buildings don't automatically mean more homes and, in fact, it is the property developers who like them in order to build luxury flats unaffordable to local people.

This Labour council is, yet again, rolling over to developers by changing its planning policy to suit them and removing restrictions on tall buildings in communities like Camberwell and Bermondsey. It should not be for developers to decide where is best to put skyscrapers, it should be local residents.

Wreaths not for birds

WHILE WE are doing our best to feed many of our endangered species of wild birds I was dismayed so see on sale locally a feeder shaped like a vertical wreath on a wooden stand.

Pinned on this wreath were about 10 nylon mesh bags containing different sorts of seeds.

It is well known that birds can be trapped in these bags by their feet or beaks.

The RSPB advises us never to put out food in mesh bags..Apparently this feeder is on sale in many garden centres. I would plead with people not to buy these wreaths.

Join nurses’ summer of protest please

IT’S NOT often that nursing staff feel the need to get ‘political’.

We get on with doing the job we were trained to do. Many of us cannot imagine doing anything else.

But we now find ourselves in a situation that can no longer be tolerated.

Since 2010, pay freezes and the 1% cap on public sector pay increases have left each member of the NHS nursing staff at least £3,000 worse with salaries falling 14 per cent in real-terms.

The pay cap not only leaves nurses struggling financially, it devalues nurses and nursing.

For the first time since 2008, more nurses are now leaving the profession than joining. Patients cannot get the care they need because there are not enough nurses – in London there are 13,000 unfilled nursing posts, the

highest it has ever been. This means wards across the Capital are understaffed and our nursing staff overstretched.

A Royal College of Nursing survey of members last month showed that 9 in 10 would support industrial action if the pay cap is not scrapped. That’s why many nurses are now getting involved in a “summer of protest” to give the Government a final chance to remove the cap. Failure to do so will result in a formal legal ballot on action later in the year.

Readers may see us as we undertake this activity and we hope they will support our aims. Without nursing staff, the NHS cannot survive.

Please support our campaign and call for the Government to #scrapthecap so we can continue to be there for the patients who need us now and in the future.

Broadband disgrace

AS MEP for London, I was disappointed by the results of the survey on broadband speeds by consumers' association Which.

It reveals that speeds in many parts of central London are nothing like those further out. The measure is megabits per second (mbps) and Southwark and Westminster have an average 10.4 and 12.9 respectively while Kingston gets 25 and Enfield has the luxury of 29.1.

A city of our prominence and standing deserves broadband that is excellent, consistent and universal.

Bad broadband speed hits families who may want to have several different streams of internet use operating simultaneously.

Worse than that, it holds back the businesses that could be creating jobs and contributing to our prosperity.

Slow broadband speeds mean a slower economy.

We need to see our Mayor working with London boroughs to do everything possible to speed up the internet across London. Our people and our businesses deserve better.

Amongst a whole range of proposals, Mayor Khan pledged an additional £620,000 for projects to combat knife crime, taking the total he spends on the issue to £7million.

Additionally, a specialist team of Metropolitan Police will focus on supertargeted interventions to catch those carrying these grotesque weapons .This money and this additional support will be used to empower communities to help our young out of the cycles of violence which all too often end with the pointless loss of another life.

Another issue close to the Mayor’s heart and the hearts of many of us in Southwark is mental ill health.

Across London over 2 million people suffer from some form of poor mental health. If you are sitting on a full double decker bus reading this an average of 13 on the bus with you will have some form of mental ill health condition.

This Mayor recognises, as I do, that we need to start seeing mental ill health in the same way we do with physical health.

This is especially true for us in London where daily living can be much more stressful and places unique demands on us and our relationships. Mental ill health also affects significant numbers of young people, with estimates showing that 10% of our young people between 5 and 16 years of age suffer from some form of mental ill health.

If this did not convince you that we need to do something enough then you should also know that mental ill health costs the London economy a staggering £10billion.

Sadiq Khan has launched Thrive – a programme designed to get us all to embrace mental health as an important part of health and well-being. We need to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. He plans to do this with the backing of over 200 experts, clinicians, public and private organisations, charities and academics.

Thrive LDN will reach into schools and work with employers to help us all lead happier lives. It's great that Southwark has been chosen to hold the first Thrive LDN community conversation. The event will be held at Southwark Council’s Tooley Street office on Tuesday 18 July 2017, attendance is free. Just search for thrive LDN for more information and to book a place. It is my belief that knife crime and mental ill health can, at times, be related. Hopefully through better knife crime reduction we will feel less anxious about our lives and maybe with some early mental health intervention fewer people will turn to knifes and gangs in a search for belonging and empowerment.

These are some of the most complex and intractable issues in Southwark and London today.

ROTHERHITHE ARTIST Ed Gray has been working with children from Years 4, 5 and 6 from St Mary Magdalene CE Primary School Peckham to create two large scale murals.

The artist, best known for his

laugh out loud funny. Even the gags that fall flat are quickly swept aside as another, better one follows them straight in.

The jokes are both visual and verbal and this stupendous cast put everything into their performances in order to get as much laughter out of us as they can. They work with soft toys, wooden models of varying proportions and a range of costumes to bring us probably the best spoof I’ve seen for a long time.

A big and blustery wind f you’ve never seen a show

by Daniel Clarkson then I’m guessing you are in a minority as he is a coconspirator on the ‘Potted’ series of shows (Panto, Potter,Pirates…) that are playing somewhere on the planet at any given time, writes Michael Holland...

London figurative street scenes, has collaborated with the children to create two new murals that reveal a day in the life of the school from the pupils' viewpoint.

The left hand panel depicts pupils at home preparing for the school day, then arriving at school, greeting friends and learning in class as well as receiving and eating their school lunch. The right hand panel focuses on creativity and teamwork in the school with play, music, dancing and sport all featuring prominently.

Ed initially discussed ideas with pupils in a brainstorming session and then ran life-drawing classes that reenacted the key daily moments that the pupils described. The murals are intended to

Wind In The Willows.

The set, framed by drooping weeping willow leaves, is fantastic; the songs are great, the costumes are brilliant; the choreography is spot on and the show even makes Rufus Hound look good, who I thought had peaked when he got a return call from Celebrity Juice.

The story is known to most and is recreated with words here by Julian Fellowes. But it is lyricist Anthony Drewe who gets my nod of thanks for rhyming ‘Divs’ with ‘Lives’ for the nasty weasels’ song as they take up squatters’ rights at Toad Hall.

Genius.

There are car thefts, joyrides, jail breaks, manhunts - all perfect fare for the young and young at heart.

There are a couple of stand-out performances, with Simon Lipkin’s Rat coming across rather well in my opinion, but all the main characters did excellent work in making this show such an entertaining one.

n article written by a former British Transport Police boss details the intriguing case of a murder on board a train from London Bridge in 1881, writes Chiara Giordano...

William Owen Gay (1913-1990) wrote about the murder of Isaac Gold by another passenger on board the 2pm train from London Bridge to Preston Park Station on Monday, June 27, 1881.

The article written by Gay was published in the Railway Police Journal in January 1949.

He later went on to become the first BTP Chief Constable to be appointed from within the force in August 1963 – the second was Paul Crowther in 2014.

The Railway Police Journal was the in-house journal for the BTP at the time – later named the British Transport Police Journal – and ran from 1948 until 1990.

Gay’s article has been published on the BTP History Group’s website as part of BTP History Week.

It details the case of Isaac Gold who was murdered by fellow passenger Percy Lefroy Mapleton – a journalist desperately short of money who had boarded the train with the purpose of robbing someone.

"When the 2pm train from London Bridge arrived at Preston Park Station just outside Brighton on the afternoon of Monday, 27th June, 1881, a ticket collector saw a man step unsteadily on to the platform from a first class carriage,” Gay wrote.

“He was covered in blood, hatless, without a collar and tie, and very distressed.

“The collector went to his assistance and he told the collector that he had been attacked just before the train entered Merstham Tunnel. “[…]The collector saw nobody else alight from the compartment but he observed that a piece of watch chain was hanging from one of the man’s boots.

“He pointed this out and the passenger remarked that he had put it there for safety.

“The condition of this strange and somewhat battered passenger, who gave his name as Percy Mapleton Lefroy, was such that the station master arranged for the platform inspector to take him to the police station at the town hall, while the collector was sent to advise the Railway Police.

“There-after the situation developed in such a way that the obtuseness of the railway officials and of the

Borough and Railway Police became the subject of editorial comment in The Times while other newspapers said unkind things in less polite terms.”

Mapleton – or Lefroy, as he had given his name – was taken to hospital to have his injuries treated before being interviewed by several officers and making a statement at the police station.

He then went to Brighton Station to board a train to London but was taken into an office and searched, where he was found to have counterfeit coins in his possession.

“In the meantime the carriage was shunted into a siding and an examination made,” wrote Gay. “Three bullet marks were found and there was blood everywhere – on the footboard, mat, and door handle, and also on a handkerchief and newspaper left in the compartment.

“There was, in fact, every sign of a fierce struggle. There were also some coins similar to those found on Lefroy.

“In spite of obvious inconsistencies in his story and of the highly suspicious circumstances, neither the Brighton Police, nor the Railway Police considered it necessary to detain Lefroy.

“But they were uneasy and although Lefroy was permitted to join a London train arrangements were made for him to be accompanied by a detective named George Holmes.”

“While Lefroy and Holmes were travelling back to London, a search of the line was organised.

“In Balcombe Tunnel railway staff found the body of an elderly man, later identified as a retired corn merchant named Gold, who lived in Brighton.

“Mr Gold had been shot and stabbed and near his body was found a knife smeared with blood.

“It was soon learned that he had been robbed of his watch and chain and a considerable sum of money.

“The news of the finding of the body was passed along the line and at Three Bridges the station master told

Holmes what had happened. Holmes was also instructed by telegram from Brighton not to let Lefroy out of his sight.”

Lefroy talked Holmes into accompanying him to an address in Surrey so that he could change his clothes – but while the detective was distracted, he managed to escape.

He was later found hiding out at a house in Stepney, Tower Hamlets, where he had been lodging under a different name and only going out at night.

“Bloodstained clothing was found in his room and since he had already been identified as a man who had exchanged some counterfeit coins and also pawned a revolver, the evidence against him was overwhelming,” wrote Gay. Percy Lefroy Mapleton later appeared in court where he was found guilty of Gold’s murder by a jury after just ten minutes’ deliberation. He was hanged on November 29, 1881.

Gay said it was a long time before the press and public forgot “the

strange lapse of the officials concerned in the case”.

“The L.B.S.C. Rly. [London, Brighton and South Coast Railway] were subjected to a great deal of ridicule and no doubt many police officers were urged to greater care in future,” he wrote.

“But they had little cause to worry because it was sixteen years before the next murder on the railway.”

Since the famous quote from the 1987 film Withnail and I, Camberwell has become home to multiple award winning gastropubs, trendy cycle cafes and a thriving farmers’ market, writes Christian Fisher...

Theo’s Pizzeria is one of the newest restaurants to join the impressive food scene in Camberwell. The menu offers a short but carefully chosen selection of sourdough pizza, antipasti and Italian desserts. The menu changes weekly but many favourites remain unchanged.

Occupying the old Johansson’s site, which used to offer a selection of Scandinavian inspired dished and sandwiches, and a dubious sandwich shop prior to that, Theo’s has to offer something special to the area so that it does not follow the demise of the previous occupiers of the building. It’s a tough crowd to please round here.

It’s immediately clear from taking the first step into the restaurant that they have thrown considerable investment into it. An impressive wood fired pizza oven that is roaring away reassures you that you are there for some authentic pizza.

Keeping it real is what Theo Lewis, owner of Theo’s Pizzeria and former head chef of Pizza East, aims to do.

Naples gave pizza to the world and then quickly established very strict laws on how to create an authentic Neopolitan pizza. Theo religiously follows these rules and guarantees that a ticket to

Neopolitan pizza perfection can be found in south London.

The décor is sparse, with plain white walls and bare furnishings, but clearly the real show is the food. Our pizzas appear within minutes or ordering and we both dig in. Looking up at my partner, mouth full of my third chomp of chestnut mushroom pizza, I communicate my panic that I had forgotten to take a photograph of this delicious looking meal for this review.

That’s how tempting the food looked.

I’m very fussy about mushrooms.

Washing down the final bites with the last of my Kernel table beer we were then unable to resist the beautifullooking tiramisu. They always make it fresh in the kitchen and we were pleased to notice that they had not held back on the cream and the booze. Another squeaky clean plate sent back to the kitchen.

A DEPLETED Dulwich side failed to build on a good start in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Bank of England, going down to defeat by 105 runs.

Dulwich gave their opponents first use of a good batting pitch, and Leon Sealy and Jon Lodwick each took an early wicket to reduce Bank to 25-2 after 8.1 overs.

The third-wicket pair added 32 before both fell in the space of three balls. This gave a first wicket to Levi Olver, in his first over, and a second to Sealy, who completed an impressive first spell with 2-29 off nine overs.

The team was selected as one of only two universities, alongside Swansea University, to represent the UK in the third-ever exchange, which is an initiative of the Federation of University Sport of China and the British Council.

DULWICH CRICKET Club Girls were victorious recently in the Gilbert Cup, an eight-a-side, eight-over-a-side under11 pairs girls cricket match played in the interval of the Royal London Cup final.

Dulwich Girls won the Surrey county play-off when they beat last year's winners Spencer at the Oval, with fate then tied to the progress of the county team. As Surrey reached the final, Dulwich played Keyworth Girls CC as the team from Notts.

David Moore, the Dulwich Girls manager, explained: “We were collected by coach and taken to Lords where, after a quick inspection of the indoor school, we took our seats and watched the first half hour of the men’s match.

“The girls then returned to the indoor school where some MCC Academy coaches organised a gentle warm-up alongside our opponents Keyworth CC. The girls then got to meet England seamer Kate Cross and England one-day captain Eoin Morgan.”

Keyworth won the toss and inserted Dulwich on a green-top with short boundaries. Dulwich, however, showed no nerves, hitting a number of straight sixes and only losing two wickets for a net score of 288.

Moore said: “The girls’ bowling and fielding display was remarkable. I have never seen such a consistently high standard of fielding in junior cricket. The girls’ fielding and catching was virtually flawless – so much so that the spectators gathered to watch ignored the parallel boys match.”

Dulwich’s bowling was intelligent and accurate, with Keyworth losing sixteen wickets in the chase to lose by around 150 runs.

Moore added: “A huge thanks also to Allen Blackford, our coach, for his work with the girls as well as all those who came to support.” off 32 balls.

Olver and Gledhill added a further seventeen before Olver fell for 21 off 30.

At 127-9 the last pair still had to hold out for 11.3 overs to avoid defeat, but had lasted just four when O’Brien was recalled. Four balls were all he needed to take his sixth wicket and secure victory for his side. Dulwich had succumbed for 134 in just 37.4 overs.

Dulwich gained just three points from a disappointing match and slip back to ninth place as Epsom gained nine points from a winning draw against Malden Wanderers. Next week Dulwich have a difficult match at home to runaway leaders Esher.

STEVE MORISON is hoping Leeds United’s progress continues – so he can experience playing at a packed Elland Road this season.

Millwall head to Leeds in the second month of the campaign where they will face a side looking to build on last season’s seventh-place finish under Garry Monk.

Leeds looked like they would clinch a play-off place before winning just one of their last eighth league fixtures.

Morison scored five goals in 41 appearances for Leeds before joining Millwall for a third time in the summer of 2015.

And he wants new Whites boss Thomas Christiansen to have the side firing to ensure a charged atmosphere when Neil Harris takes the Lions to Elland Road on September 16.

“That’ll be a good one going back there, especially with the crowds they’re getting nowadays and the relative success they had last season,” Morison said.

“Hopefully they can continue that this year. I’d much rather be playing in front of 30/40,000 at Elland Road than ten or 20.

“It’s a fantastic ground with fantastic fans so it’ll be a right good atmosphere.

“I’m not sure we’ll have a big number at Leeds because they make it hard work.

But Millwall fans are going to travel with us in big numbers like they always do and I think they’ll thoroughly enjoy the season as well.

“We want to stay in the Championship and we want to build. We want to build a team and a squad and for the majority of people here it is going to be their first time playing in the Championship, even some of the new boys we’ve brought in.

“It’ll be a learning curve for everybody.

It’s been a few years since I played there so it’ll be a learning curve for me as well because it changes all the time.

“We want to finish as high as we can and do as well as we can, we’re not going to put any limit on it. The worst we want to finish is fourth last, we just have to make sure we’re not in the bottom three.”

Morison will also come face to face with John Terry again next season after playing against the Aston Villa defender

“There is a lot of talk about John but there is a hell of a lot of other quality players in the Championship,” Morison said. “It’s a big coup for Aston Villa.

“I’ve had a couple of battles with him in the past but I’m not too worried about one player, there are a lot of quality players to battle against this season.

“It’s going to be a good season. There are a lot of big teams getting some very good players. It’ll be a tough challenge but one we’re looking forward to.”

Morison, who turns 34 in August, has another challenge to contend with closer to home. Harris has signed Tom Elliott, who will give Millwall another target up front.

But Morison welcomes the competition.

He said: “Tom’s come in, he’s a big athlete and he’s looked very good in training. The more the merrier.

“We’re going to have two players for every position, the bench is going to be massive this year and there are players who won’t make the bench.

“Competition should bring out the best in everybody, no one can rest of their

laurels. I might only have a few years left but I want to see if I can keep improving and keep my place in the team.”

Morison wrote himself into Millwall folklore in May when he scored the 85thminute winner against Bradford at Wembley that clinched promotion.

“The main thing was winning. I said after the semi-final it was going to need a massive performance and someone to be the hero. If I could have written the script personally that’s how I would have wanted to write it. It was a great day and we are where we want to be.

“We had set out our goals at the start of last season and I said in many an

time break and Tom Elliott made his first appearance in a Millwall shirt.

George Saville and Jed Wallace also played for the first time as permanent Millwall players, but the priorities were not picking up any injuries before the flight to Portugal on Thursday. That sixday training camp will have far more long-term benefits for the squad as they lay the foundations in terms of fitness ahead of what will be a physically demanding Championship season.

Not that Harris was satisfied to let any sloppiness or sluggishness pass. At one point in the first half he bellowed ‘too f***ing slow’ within earshot of a group of kids hanging around near the dugouts in the hope of clinching autographs from

their heroes. Harris was jokingly pulled up for his profanity by a supporter as Millwall struggled on a pitch on which the grass appeared not to have met a lawnmower in a while.

Harris also rebuked Thompson and Sid Nelson for walking to take up tactical positions instead of running, and he admitted the players needed to up their work rate in the next few weeks.

It was understandable there was little urgency or fluency given they had trained the day before. The squad also know they will be worked to exhaustion in Portugal, so perhaps they treated this as a little hiatus in between.

Dartford take the lead, but beyond Millwall’s video analysis team it’s unlikely anyone else captured his sliced clearance that fell to the feet of Romaric Logan, who calmly stepped around the goalkeeper to score.

Moro Grade A student STEVE MORISON has been working with Millwall’s under-18 squad as he completes his coaching badges.

Morison, 33, has an assessment when he returns from Millwall’s training camp in Portugal after which he will be awarded a Uefa A Licence.

The Lions striker will look to a career in coaching after his playing days come to an end, but he doesn’t expect that to be anytime soon.

“I’ve finished my A Licence now, there’s only the Pro after that,” Morison explained. “I’ve got my assessment the Monday after I get back from Portugal.

Hopefully that all goes well and that’ll be everything completed for now.

“Any coaching that I need to do I’m lucky that Chris Perry and Larry McAvoy let me help with the under-18s and that’s where I’ll be doing my assessment.

“But I’m not too focussed on that at the minute, I just wanted to get the badges done and it’s there when I need it.

“I’ve had some big moments in my career but that is definitely up there. It topped off nigh-on the perfect season for me. In footballing terms that will go down as one of the best moments.

“It took me a few days to recover because I was physically and emotionally drained. I spent time relaxing but after two or three weeks you just want to come back again.

“It’s exciting times, there are a lot of exciting games next season and we’re going to give a good account of ourselves.”

IF A strong character is one of the most important things Millwall look for in a new recruit, then they have made a sound investment in Conor McLaughlin.

McLaughlin left Belfast when he fifteen to go on trial with Preston North End, and when he was offered a scholarship he left behind formal education to try to make it in the professional game.

He made his debut aged nineteen but in February 2011, in just his eighth outing as a senior professional footballer, he broke his leg in a 4-0 defeat at home to Bristol City.

Preston were relegated to the Championship that season but McLaughlin recovered and played just six months later, becoming a regular in the team again and making his Northern Ireland international debut against Italy in a European Championship qualifier.

At Preston, Phil Brown was then sacked in early 2012, Graham Westley took over and soon loaned McLaughlin to League Two Shrewsbury before later transferlisting him.

All of that would have broken most and convinced them it wasn’t meant to be, but McLaughlin hadn’t made all those sacrifices for nothing.

“It’s tough moving away from home at that age, though I was lucky because I knew a couple of people,” McLaughlin said. “It’s difficult getting used to a different country and different life, being involved in football 24/7.

“But it’s what you want to do. I finished my GCSEs and then came straight over.

You end up doing a B-Tech during your scholarship. It’s not much but it’s still a little bit of further education.

“It’s a sacrifice, you’re ending your education after GCSEs which isn’t ideal.

But if you want to pursue a career in football you have to make sacrifices.

“Before I made my debut Preston were struggling down near the bottom of the table and had a lot of injuries. I ended up making my debut against Hull and I think it was on Sky. I was only nineteen so it was difficult circumstances to come into.

“At that age you don’t really think about it, you just want to do well and I managed to stay in the team for a number of games before I broke my leg.

“I had managed to play really well in those games and was looking forward to seeing what was going to happen.

Unfortunately the break was bad timing.

“At that age it was a huge disappointment, but I thought once I got

back into it it would be the same. But it wasn’t like that. You come back, you have to build yourself up, your legs aren’t the same as they were before.

“It probably took me a season to get back fully to where I was.

“But it makes you mentally stronger.

When I came back I wasn’t hitting the same form, I wasn’t as sharp as I had been and it makes you doubt yourself.

When you come through it, though, you’re stronger for the next challenge.”

After he left Preston he signed for upwardly mobile Fleetwood Town. But even then it wasn’t immediate plain sailing.

He explained: “It was amazing there, I signed for them after they had been promoted to League Two. I was in and out of the team the first year but cemented my place the second year.

“We got promoted that season and were going from strength to strength every year. It was a brilliant experience.”

With McLaughlin on the way to being named the best right-back in the division last season, Fleetwood unexpectedly reached the play-offs, where they lost to Bradford, whom Millwall went on to defeat in the final.

He credits Fleetwood boss Uwe Rosler with helping his career.

“He was a manager in the Championship so he brought that experience and knowledge. He played for Man City as well so he knows what he’s talking about. You learn a lot from someone like that.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to do what we did last year but once the team was settled you could see how strong we were.

“I’ve wanted to push on for a couple of years now. When you play for Northern Ireland with people at a higher level it makes you want to play as high up as you possibly can. It’s been an ambition of mine to get back to the Championship after experiencing it with Preston.

“You play against unbelievable international players and it’s something you want to do every week. This is another step-up for me and I want to prove myself.”

Fleetwood offered McLaughlin a new deal but withdrew it when it became obvious he was set on leaving.

And like Tom Elliott and James Meredith, he revealed he was impressed with how Neil Harris went about

convincing him to join the Lions.

He explained: “It was towards the end of the season when my agent told me about Millwall. I met the manager just after the season ended, it was really good and I came away thinking it would be a really good move.

“He went into a lot of depth. He showed me clips of how they play, and showed clips of me to show how I would fit in.

When a manager goes to those lengths it makes you feel wanted.

“There were a few clubs interested but when I met the manager here that was the most exciting one.”

He also talked to Shane Ferguson, whom he has played alongside since they were both Northern Ireland under-16 internationals.

“Fergie said it was a good club, and a squad that will make you feel welcome.

Obviously the manager is really good.

What he said reinforced my decision to come here. “[Northern Ireland boss] Michael O’Neill was really helpful as well, he told me to go for it here.”

MILLWALL HAVE named Alex Aldridge their new head of player recruitment.

Former Southwark News journalist Aldridge, 24, was working as a recruitment officer with the club after joining in May 2015.

Millwall’s current recruitment department was set up by former Brentford chief executive Andrew

Mills, before he left the Lions in March 2016.

The recruitment department includes chief scout Terry Bullivant, analyst Nick Draper-Hicks as well as a team of regional scouts.

Millwall have signed five players on permanent deals this summer, and hope to come to an agreement for Reading centre-back Jake Cooper, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the club.

when he departed, with Harris explaining at the time: “Andrew did a terrific job setting up the department and now the responsibility falls on the shoulders of all of us, not just me.

“It’s really in-depth now and the process we go through in the summer in terms of signing players won’t just be based on availability on that day. It will be a process that would have gone on for a minimum of six months.

“There are lots of parts to the process of bringing players in, i.e.

identifying players in the first instance, finding out about their availability and then working with their agent on their expectation levels in terms of wages.

“All players that come into the club or leave the club are signed or let go by me, final decision.”

Aldridge was the News’ Millwall reporter before he joined the club and he is now overseeing the process of identifying and recruiting players for the first-team squad.

Preston-born Rebecca and going on honeymoon all while deciding whether they would move the family – they have a boy, Niall, who is almost two – down south.

“When you’re making big life decisions in a short space of time it’s stressful,” McLaughlin admitted. “But that was really the only big decision I had to make, moving down here and starting a new life.

“The club have been really good, they’ve been helping us try to find somewhere so hopefully we will soon.

“I’d only visited London a couple of times but anyone I’ve spoken to who’s lived here has said they don’t want to go back up north.”

The next challenge will be establishing himself in the Millwall side and helping the club establish themselves in the Championship.

McLaughlin has gone through enough in his career to take it up with determination.

“It’s a difficult league, every week there’s going to be a hard game but it’s a strong squad here. We’ll take it one game at a time and see where that takes us.”

NEIL HARRIS insists Harry Smith’s long-term future is with Millwall after the striker joined Swindon Town on a season-long loan.

Harris revealed there were a number of enquiries to take Smith on loan but Swindon was a “really good fit”.

The Robins were relegated from League One last season and are rebuilding under new boss David Flitcroft, who took over from Luke Williams in June.

Smith, 22, joined Millwall last

summer for a fee of £15,000 after helping Folkestone Invicta to promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division in 2015-16.

Smith made a scoring debut in a Football League Trophy group game against Luton last November before following that up with goals on his debuts in the league and FA Cup. However, he has played just four times in 2017, and Harris has added Tom Elliott to his squad to provide competition for Steve Morison and Lee Gregory.

Fred Onyedinma, who has agreed a new deal with the club, and Aiden O’Brien can also play up front meaning Smith’s first-team opportunities in the Championship would have been limited.

“It’s a brilliant move for him,” Harris said. “What an impact he had last year, probably beyond all our wildest dreams.

“He came in and to score six goals and to play the games he did was about twelve months ahead of where we all expected him to be.

“We’re just conscious we’ve gone up another level. Stevie showed his quality again last year, and we’ve brought Tom Elliott in.

“Yes, they are very good players but we also need to think about Harry’s development. We’re giving him an opportunity to go away and be ready when he comes back.

“It’s a really good move for him.

but Swindon looks a really good fit.

They’re a big side in that division and will get big crowds.

“They have two very good, frontfoot thinking people in their management team in David Flitcroft and Ben Futcher. They play quite a similar style to us, so that was important.

“It’s an opportunity for Harry to go and get some minutes, but there’s no doubt his long-term future lies at our football club.

“Like a lot of young lads, being here close to the squad but not playing is not going to benefit him, neither is under-23 football because he has played senior men’s football for the last three years and that’s what he needs.”

The Lions agreed a fee with the Royals for Cooper last month and had hoped to quickly wrap up a deal for the defender, who played eighteen times for Millwall last season and scored twice.

Cooper, 22, played for Reading in a 2-1 friendly win over QPR on Saturday, but is understood not to have a future with the Royals under their manager Jaap Stam.

Reading appointed former Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay to the same role this week, and Lions boss Neil Harris admitted Millwall have had to be patient with their Championship rivals.

“The fee was agreed ages ago,” Harris said.

“Reading have got a new CEO. Obviously we’ve enquired about Jake and we have been very patient in allowing Reading to work out how they are moving forward.

“He’s a player we know well.

I want to bring a centre-half to the club and Jake certainly fits the bill in terms of what we’re after.

“We’ll have to be patient to see if we can bring Jake in or if it will be someone with a bit more experience.”
