Striving for excellence with one hand tied behind their back

IVEN THE financial straits King’s College Hospital Trust find themselves in, it’s no real surprise that their latest appraisal has adjudged them as ‘requiring improvement’.

In August we reported how the Trust needed £86 million of savings in this financial year alone, not least because of their PFI tie up with the Princess Royal Hospital in Bromley. Couple this with increased pressure on services due to an ageing local population and the Care Quality Commission was only ever going to draw this conclusion. Sure enough, the Emergency Department is overcrowded, the critical care service is short on beds, the maternity ward is sometimes understaffed and - hard to believe in a major central London hospital - there has been intermittent flooding of the dialysis unit and endoscopy suite.

Yet the report also noted the ‘outstanding practice’ among some employees, including trauma nurses, a youth worker drop-in scheme in the Emergency Department and the ‘pioneering work’ being done by some of the hospital’s specialist services. The hospital itself says many of the weaknesses identified in the report have already been addressed, as ever seems to be the case when such reports are published.

You can’t judge the performance of a hospital like King’s in a vacuum - financial constraints are bound to have an impact. So the excellent staff work noted is to be applauded.

Yet with £8 million proposed to be shaved off the staff pay bill by March next year, you really have to fear for the future.

Urban gardening

ARE WE say it, but it would be a blooming shame if the council didn’t find a reasonable solution to residents being allowed to grow plants and flowers on their walkways.

Bermondsey mum Sarah Harris is the latest to receive a warning letter about ‘health and safety danger’ and now fears for the future of her urban green haven.

You often hear people harking back to the good old days where everyone looked after their own patch of walkway, so when some residents make an effort to brighten up where they live, that should be encouraged.

Of course the council has to ensure that health and safety regulations are observed as Sarah herself points out, this is the borough that suffered the horrific Lakanal fire, when six people lost their lives.

Cluttered walkways, and delayed exits in the event of fires, could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency.

Yet a light touch is needed here, rather than uprooting something that brings pleasure to everyone who lives there. If the walkways aren’t being blocked, then why not encourage urban gardening?

HUNDREDS OF people have signed a petition after Southwark Council threatened to tear down yet another resident’s balcony garden.

Bermondsey mum Sarah Harris, of the Southwark Park Estate, received a warning letter from the council telling her that the colourful plants she kept outside her front door were a “health and safety danger.”

Earlier this year the News reported that Kennington gran Pat Bryan had succeeded in staring down the council when they demanded she also clear her walkway – yet it seems that the thorny issue has been raised again with a new crackdown on green-fingered residents.

Sarah said: “I’m really p****d off to put it mildly! I understand the need for fire safety standards, especially after the Lakanal fire, but this is just so unnecessary.

“I’m the end property, so nobody needs to go past my flat in the event of a fire. Nobody would have any trouble getting through anyway - we got a fridge past it the other day!”

The 45-year-old has been keeping plants outside her house for 24 years and is proud of the effort she takes in “greening-up” the area.

It also keeps her “from going mad”, after she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a spinal condition, and forced to spend a lot of time indoors.

She said: “I grew up surrounded by plants. My parents had a garden and I loved it, but obviously I don’t have a

garden here, so I need to make do.

“No-one else here really makes an effort. Most people are paving over their garden for parking or just not doing anything with theirs.

“The council are always going on about Southwark In Bloom and being green, but now they’re targeting one of the few people in the estate trying to do that!”

Sarah’s daughter Tania has set up a Facebook protest group called “Help My Mum Save Her Plants!!!” which has already bloomed to over 200 members. The 25-year-old said: “She buys plants every week, it does my head in! She sees one in the shop and says ‘Oh, it’s dying.’ Most people rescue dogs, not plants!”

Sarah vowed not to give up on her “oasis.”

She said: “I am so worried that one day I’m going to come back from work and find them all gone. I just can’t understand as I’ve had them out there for so many years and now they’ve dropped off this leaflet without even knocking on the door.

“I’m not going to give up though.

They did the right thing with that other woman and I hope they just see sense here too.”

Kennington resident Pat Bryan, who won the last ‘War of the Roses’ against the council, is rooting for her fellow gardener and hopes officials will also leaf her alone. She urged her to “stand your ground” and said that following her stance last spring, other residents had joined her in brightening up her estate by creating their own hanging gardens.

Southwark Council cabinet member for Housing, Cllr Richard Livingstone, said: “Of course we would be happy to work with the resident to see how she may be able to keep some of the flower pots, but we are going to have to ask her to remove a number of the items, including a rotary washing line, table and chair, to ensure the way is clear.

“While we understand that people want to add personal touches to their homes we have to balance this with our responsibility for the safety of all the residents. The tenancy agreements are clear that walkways should not be obstructed. This is both for the safety of the residents leaving the homes in an emergency and for any emergency services who need to enter the property.

Suspect then climbed out of cab window without paying, say police

POLICE ARE hunting a man who hurled ‘racial abuse’ at a black taxi driver before climbing out the window without paying.

The man was picked up in Camberwell New Road in the early hours of March 22.

He quickly began shouting at the taxi driver, who drove as far as King’s Road in Chelsea before pulling over in protest at around 1.30am.

at our website, shows the cab driver ordering the aggressive passenger to pay the fare and leave. The passenger refuses and begins shouting more abuse, some of which is racist in nature.

The passenger then clambers out of the window of the cab. He spits and kicks the vehicle before fleeing.

The man is described as white, approximately 6ft tall and was wearing a white shirt and a grey suit.

Onlookers shocked as car turns into fireball

STUNNED ONLOOKERS watched in horror as a car burst into flames on Peckham Rye last week.

Police and fire crews were called to the junction with Nigel Road just after midday on Thursday to reports of a car on fire.

A police spokesperson said officers were concerned the Citroen estate had a full tank of petrol.

The fire was brought under control by 12.15pm and there were no reports of any injuries.

The road was closed but is being reopened as vehicle recovery teams at the scene move the scorched car out of the road.

A PROLIFIC pickpocket from Peckham has been jailed for a year after he owned up to eight counts of theft from commuters quieting to board busy buses.

Warren Spencer, of Friary Estate, owned up to eight counts of theft between October 2014 and July this year, starting with nicking a purse off a 26-year-old woman on a night bus to Tower Hamlets.

The 53-year-old was banged up for twelve months after officers produced evidence the ‘artful dodger’ had pinched phones, wallets and purses from men and women waiting in large crowds to board buses.

Spencer was also issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday September 30,

which prevents him queueing for or boarding a bus without a valid oyster card and having in his possession phones not registered in his name.

Detective Superintendent Adnan Qureshi, of the Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: "This was an excellent result which has seen a thief who targeted people travelling on buses receive a significant jail term thanks to the Roads and Transport Command."

Steve Burton, TfL's Director of Enforcement and On-Street Operations, said: "Crime on our bus network is now at it's lowest ever level. However, we are not complacent and continue to work together with our policing partners to ensure the safety and security of our travelling customers." Spencer pleaded guilty to eight counts of theft and possessing cannabis at Westminster Magistrates Court on August 19.

A GRIEVING mother has sent out a stark message to those friends of her murdered son who are keeping the details of his death a secret – ‘I don’t need your sympathy, I need you to tell the police what you know.’

Mariama Kamara’s sixteen-year-old son Mo was ambushed by a large group and stabbed to death on the Newington Estate last month – but the police have met a wall of silence from those who witnessed the attack.

Speaking to the News, Mariama (aka Baby Leigh), said since her “good boy,” was taken, she has had many visits from his friends.

“They look at my face and I know some of them were standing there when someone killed my son but they don’t say,” she said. “They come and hug me like they feel sorry for me.

They watch me cry, but they are hiding secrets. I don’t need a hug, I need them to come forward and tell

the police who did this thing.

“If you loved him you should say something, but you don’t love him,” she added.

Police were called to Canterbury Place on Monday September 14 shortly before 11pm to a ‘large disturbance’ and found Mo suffering from multiple stab wounds. London's Air Ambulance attended but the Globe Academy student was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seven men, between the ages of sixteen and 54, were arrested after the attack, but two were released with no further action to be taken and five have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Mariama previously told the News that the only thing she wanted now was “to see the one that killed my son, look him in the eye and say ‘you put pain in my heart – I’ll never see my boy again’. I want to ask them: ‘How do you feel about taking somebody’s life?’ I want to bring his killer to justice.”

Mo was a dutiful son who was known for his caring nature and beaming smile, so Mariama and the

close family cannot understand why the aspiring footballer was targeted “He was a peacemaker when anyone had problems. He was caring, a good boy,” she said with tears in her eyes.

Moving tributes were paid to Mo at a fundraiser for his funeral put on by his friends and family on Wednesday night last week.

It was standing room only at Inspire the Crypt under St Peter’s Church as young people wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the Mo’s Foundation motto ‘Drop the knives, save lives’ queued out the door.

Mo’s friend, Michael Mansaray, 16, who organised the fundraiser said though he has lost other friends through knife crime, “Mo’s death was different. I just really wanted to help.”

Mo’s cousin, Amie Fofanah, who co-hosted the event, said the pain she felt at hearing of his death was nothing to that of his mother. “A mother’s biggest sorrow is to bury her child.

That’s why we decided to do this,” said Amie. You never know the pain until it happens to someone close to you. I pray to God we won’t have to do this for anyone sitting here.”

The event raised £1,250 towards Mo’s funeral, which cannot be organised until his body has been released by the police.

Mo’s uncle, Alan Kamara, has set up a funeral committee to raise a total of £5,000 to pay for the service, “because a loving young man killed deserves a decent burial.”

Speaking at the event on Wednesday night, Alan said: “Mo has gone and we can never replace him. We will never get him back. The damage of death is irreversible.

Our challenge now as a community is to make sure there’s no more deaths of the young.”

Police recover large number of weapons near murder scene

POLICE WHO scoured the area around the murder scene in Canterbury Place have recovered a large number of weapons and are now using forensics to identify if any of them are the murder weapon or linked to the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn,

who is leading the investigation, confirmed that Mo was not in a gang and that his team were still trying to establish the motive of the killing.

CCTV close to the scene captures a group of around twenty people nearby. They seem to be relaxed until the incident occurs, drawing

them out of camera view.

Officers are now going through hours of CCTV footage, to try to identify those who were at the scene who may be able to help the police with their enquiries.

“It’s an awful time for the family and we need help to get justice for them,” said DCI Gwyn.

BT Broadband plan welcomed

ROTHERHITHE: Campaigners have “cautiously welcomed” news that BT plans to expand its highspeed broadband into the peninsula.

Around 18,000 properties across the borough, including a large number in Rotherhithe’s cyber slow-lane, will now benefit from faster internet speeds. The area has been a challenging area for internet due to its dated communications cables.

Pauline Adenwalla, Chair of the Rotherhithe Broadband Group, said: “We welcome this much needed investment in the communication infrastructure of the area that the community has pressed for. This is the first step, by BT, in providing better broadband speeds in the area, but the community campaign will go on to continue to press for the rest of the area to be upgraded” The high-speed fibre broadband will be rolled out to new residences over the next two years.

THE FAMILY of a pensioner who was crushed to death by a lorry have sent their thoughts to the driver in what they described as a “tragic accident.”

Peckham was brought to a standstill last week as hundreds of

mourners turned out to pay their respects to “kind and good-hearted” great-grandmother, Mary O’Leary.

The funeral cortège paused at the scene where the 76-year-old was hit in the collision as she crossed the road towards the top of Rye Lane on Friday, September 4.

Mourners came from as far and wide as Ireland and Manchester to walk the route from the funeral

mass at St James the Great in Elm Grove, down Peckham High Street and up to Brideale Close, where Mary had lived for more than 30 years.

Mary’s brother Timothy Joyce said on behalf of the Traveller community in Peckham that everyone “sends their thoughts and prayers to the driver of the lorry as it was a tragic accident.”

The family also sent thanks to Sergeant Bill Lowden from Peckham police station and his officers for their help throughout Mary’s funeral, the Traveller housing officer Paul Jeffrey's and Agga and all the staff at Kentish Drovers for their support. King’s ‘requires improvement’ says watchdog

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital has been rated as ‘requiring improvement’ in a report released by the health watchdog last week.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited King’s in April and found that the Emergency Department was overcrowded, the critical care service was short on beds, the maternity ward was sometimes understaffed and there was intermittent flooding of the dialysis unit and endoscopy suite.

The report also mentioned

“outstanding practice” including trauma nurses, a youth worker drop in scheme operating in the Emergency Department and “pioneering work” being done by some of the hospital’s specialist services.

Roland Sinker, Acting Chief Executive at King’s, said: “The CQC’s report highlighted many areas of good practice across the Trust.

However, the rating is not where King’s wants to be. We want and need to do better.

“We are pleased the CQC praised the compassionate care our staff provide to patients every day. It is also positive that the CQC singled out

some of our specialist services for praise.

“Many of the issues the CQC has identified as requiring improvement are already known to us, and we have made significant progress since their inspection in April. However, we want to be providing high quality services to every patient that comes through our doors – and this is what everyone connected with the Trust is determined to provide.”

In August the News reported that King’s needed to find £86million of savings this financial year just to balance the books and that £8million was proposed to be shaved off the staff pay bill by March 2016.

FROM DOCKERS creatively ‘fiddling’ their share from a new shipment to illicit pupil-teacher relations, the outlandish incidents of a by-gone Bermondsey are currently being portrayed on a BBC2 sitcom.

Radio personality Danny Baker’s autobiographical comedy, Cradle to Grave, has tickled viewers pink for the last five weeks – but just how true are some of the programme’s outrageous stories?

Apparently, the majority are not far from the truth at all – especially when it comes to Danny’s charismatic father Fred, known as ‘Spud’ and portrayed by comedian Peter Kay. Always scrabbling around to make or save a few bob, Danny’s late father was reportedly as industrious in real life as he is portrayed on the small screen – including a few chaotic close shaves.

Johnny Shaw, whose parents Walter and Lily are portrayed on the show in two episodes, remembered one of those incidents.

He said: “Fred got a tip he was going to be turned over by the Old Bill. My house had a lot of stuff in it that my mum was selling for Fred, so we were all running around hiding the

He said: “Spud Baker was just one of the many ‘fences’ on Silwood Estate. But he was the man who introduced most of the Silwood to ‘Continental Quilts’, as we knew duvets back then. And we have never gone back to blankets!”

The show’s writer Jeff Pope said: “Spud is now long gone, but there were times when we were writing that I could swear Danny was channelling his late father, so clear was his voice

as we shaped scenes.”

The show was filmed in sixty locations across Manchester, but residents in the north of the borough will recognise a number of familiar place names, including the Jolly Gardener.

Michael Holland remembered the Rotherhithe New Road pub, which has since been replaced by flats, as a place “where you could pick up cheap stuff: meat stolen from the Sainsbury warehouse in Silwood Street, clothes stolen from the Baker & Britt warehouse in Silwood Street, plus anything stolen from any shop, warehouse or hijacked lorry that found its way to a Silwood fence.”

Michael Holland remembers his own father regularly trying “the fat man.”

He said: “Many was the time when the old man came home from work and proceeded to take off several layers of clothing that had been purloined from the cargo he had been loading or unloading.

“Most times it would be jumpers or jackets, but the one I remember vividly was when he came in looking like a 20-stone wrestler and stripped down through three big sheepskin coats until he was normal size again!”

Other popular tricks included ‘accidentally’ losing loads in the Thames to retrieve under cover of darkness later and the “cat in the box.”

This involved carrying an angry cat in a closed box up to the guards, letting it escape, scratching and hissing, back into the dock, and then swapping it out for something a little more valuable for another try. It was a brave guard who would ask to see into the box a second time.

KHAN’S OWNER JAILED FOR ATTEMPT TO COVER UP BANNED PESTICIDE SALE

THE OWNER of the most famous shop in Peckham has been sent to prison for four months, after trying to cover up the sale of a banned pesticide to a woman who then used it to kill herself.

Akbar Khan, 41, owner of Khan's Bargains in Rye Lane, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday last week after a 23-year-old woman swallowed the entire contents of a 100ml bottle of the illegal mosquito killer 'Sniper DDVP'.

Police were called to her home in Consort Road in June last year, where they reported a strong chemical smell coming from the property. Despite the efforts of four paramedics the woman could not be saved.

The printed label on the £1.35 bottle read 'Khan's Bargains Ltd', accompanied

by a receipt in the dead woman's handbag.

Southwark Trading Standards officers visited the shop on the same day and found a further nine bottles on sale.

The father-of-six was fined over £26,000 for breaching EU Biocide regulations in March, but it then emerged that he had doctored a sales invoice for the highly toxic substance, banned in the UK since 2002, to falsely claim it was a free sample.

Khan, the head of the Rye Lane Traders’ Association, has now been jailed for four months for perverting the course of justice.

The court heard how Khan had transformed the store since setting it up in 2000, a year after he arrived in the UK from Afghanistan.

Ms Sarah Ellis, defending, said Khan had lied about the invoice in a “panic” and added that the sentence would have a “catastrophic effect” on his family.

Teen arrested after Malorie attack PECKHAM: A third man has been arrested following a brutal assault on a heavily pregnant woman in Peckham in June, which resulted in her losing her baby.

Police offered a £20,000 reward last month for information leading to an arrest in connection with the attack on 21-year-old Malorie Bantala in Talfourd Place.

A sixteen-year-old boy was arrested on Thursday October 1 on suspicion of conspiracy to commit GBH and child destruction. He was taken to a south London police station and later bailed to a date in October.

A seventeen-year-old boy was previously charged with child destruction. Kevin Wilson, 20, of the Longfield Estate, SE1 was charged in June with child destruction and grievous bodily harm with intent. A trial date has been set for November 30.

“This offence is so serious that only immediate custody is appropriate. I have no other option but to send you to prison – you must be punished and others must be deterred from committing similar offences.”

In addition to the four month jail term, Khan was ordered to pay prosecution costs of £2,394.60.

A PACKED church had everyone dancing in the aisles on Wednesday night last week, as Walworth proved it’s got talent.

In its fifth year the Walworth’s Got Talent competition saw more than 30 performers give it their all in front of a panel of judges.

Four girls from St Peter’s CofE Primary School won first prize for their singing and dancing routine and will now be supported to get some real experience of the arts industries in the coming year. A thirteen-member dance-troupe bagged second place and Christopher Nyuma came in third for his dance and mime show. Two special commendations were given out - one to four-year-old singer, Jayda Osarieman and the other to budding violinist Joy Moughtin-Mumby, 7. Father Andrew Moughtin-Mumby Rector of St Peter's Church said: “Everyone had a great time, and even people who came just to watch ended up dancing in the pews and in the aisles.”

A CANDIDATE for next week’s council by-election has been accused of “scoring an own goal” after campaigning against the proposed redevelopment of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club’s stadium.

Ben Maitland, the Lib Dem candidate for South Camberwell, handed out leaflets outside the club’s Champion Hill ground before last week’s game against VCD Athletic.

The leaflet stated: “Like many supporters of Dulwich Hamlet FC, Ben is concerned about plans to build on its pitch and move it to a smaller alternative nearby.”

It also outlined worries about building luxury, rather than affordable, flats on the old site and the loss of green space involved in moving the pitch to a new location.

However, in an official response, the club accused Mr Maitland of “scaremongering and inaccuracy.”

The statement, titled “Don’t Believe All You Read…”, said: “We believe that the vast majority of our fans who care for the future of our club will support the development, and this will be shown once the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust poll its members on supporting the proposals.

“The new stadium will actually see an increased capacity and will be a development that will result in a much larger community use all round the clock for our area, not just for Dulwich Hamlet.

“The flyer also expresses concerns about the loss of green space, but the new stadium will be built around the current

Fans on social media said the decision to hand out leaflets arguing against the move was “idiotic”, “mind-blowingly short-sighted” and an “abuse of football and fans as [a] vehicle for political gain.”

One person commented on Twitter: “Ben Maitland scored an own-goal (excuse the pun) with poorly researched and embarrassing leaflets. Wasted exercise and Saturday.”

Mr Maitland told the News that he felt the leaflet had been misinterpreted.

He said: “I am determined to help secure Dulwich Hamlet’s long term future at Champion Hill. The club is a vital part of our community and does a huge amount of work with young people in this area.

"We clearly need to increase the amount of social housing across Southwark, but building luxury flats over our football ground will not help provide the affordable homes we need.”

A spokesperson for Hadley Property Group, who stepped in to buy the club and save it from administration last year, said: “Hadley Property Group’s proposals will guarantee the long-term future of Dulwich Hamlet FC, and enhance and maintain Green Dale.

“The scheme will establish much needed community sport and leisure facilities within the heart of East Dulwich, including partnerships with schools, football academies and disadvantaged social groups. Hadley Property Group has been engaging closely with the local community throughout this process and would be happy to meet with the candidates to fully brief them on the proposals.”

TOMMY BLACKMORE’S family have called for a change to the justice system after the Bermondsey boy’s killer was sentenced to fiveand-a-half years in jail - of which he will serve just half.

Lloyd Smythe, of Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on September 30, weeks before he was scheduled to appear in court. He was sentenced two days later.

Tommy’s older brother Bradley paid tribute to a “cheeky chap who always had time for everyone”, but suggested such tariffs were an insult to grieving families.

He told the News: “The police, the judge, the CPS – everyone did everything they could. The only thing we as a family are disappointed in is the justice system’s guidelines.

“The sentencing guidelines in place don’t do enough for different situations.

How can someone who was responsible for an unprovoked attack be treated the same as someone who just happened to deliver a fatal blow during a brawl?

“People also can get more lenient sentences for pleading guilty, even when the odds were against them and they would have no chance of getting away.

Obviously what’s happened with Tommy is done now but this is going to keep happening to other families.

Something needs to change.”

He described his 20-year-old brother,

‘He was always the favourite uncle... they were his pick-me-up. If he was in a bad mood or sad he would play with them and they’d cheer him up.’ - Brother Bradley Blackmore eleven years his junior, as his “best mate.”

Bradley said: “I was the baby of the family and then he came along! But even when he was young we were all so close.

Whenever any of us were buying clothes or something we’d check with each other that it looked good.”

The family nicknamed him “Tommy Three Baths” due to his love of a good soak, during which he would call up his many friends on the phone.

“We only found out after he passed that he used to ‘Facetime’ everyone while in the bath. He loved a good chat and he would give everyone the time of day. If

he walked to the shops he would take 40 minutes because he would just stop and talk to everyone.

“There is a Turkish man on our road who came up to us and said that even when he first arrived and couldn’t speak any English, Tommy would always stop and talk to him and make him welcome.”

Tommy was blessed with good looks and an easy charm to match, something his brother talked about admiringly – and with just a smidge of jealousy.

“He was the type of person who would walk into a club and immediately be the centre of attention. He had those long eyelashes, big green eyes and perfect

“Even as a young kid the girls just loved him. He was cheeky and had good banter - and he knew that he was carrying good looks!”

Tommy, who worked on the tube tracks with Bradley and their eldest brother Micky, was also a proud and protective uncle to his five nephews and nieces.

“He was always the favourite uncle they were only ever allowed to jump on his bed! They were his pick-me-up. If he was ever in a bad mood or sad he would play with them and they’d cheer him up.”

Other than family and friends, Tommy’s two big passions were his Xbox and football.

Bradley said: “He was reem at Xbox.

Between the ages of about eleven and fifteen he was always in his room playing Call of Duty. He was so good -

although it wasn’t much fun playing against him! You were in luck if you were on his team though.”

His football career was equally successful, with Tommy representing a number of teams in the area including the Docklands Settlement team and the supporters’ team of his beloved Millwall FC. His family still laugh about the time, at around five or six years old, that he penned a long letter to the News, urging the Millwall manager to sign up World Cup-winning Brazilian striker Ronaldo.

Bradley said: “We hung up that letter for years on the fridge, but we teased him so much about it that he took it down and hid it! We don’t know where it is now.”

Ex-Millwall player Mark Beard was one of the many members of the Lions family to pay tribute to Tommy after his death.

He said: “He was a lovely lad, funny, bubbly, confident and loyal. His death came as a massive shock and I still can’t believe that he has gone. They do say the good die young and in Tommy’s case this is definitely true.”

On the pitch, Tommy was equally successful, with the three Blackmore brothers taking great joy in lining up alongside each other.

“He began playing football with adults when he was eight! Micky would go off for the last fifteen minutes and Tommy would come on and just get stuck in.

“He wasn’t the biggest kid, but he had the biggest heart. He was always breaking his leg or his arm. He just wasn’t scared and was always diving in.”

Bradley does remember an incident when Tommy wasn’t quite as brave.

He said: “I had to go to the hospital as I’d broken my nose and needed to get it reset. The consultant was explaining how it would work and Tommy fainted, he was just gone! He came round and they put him in an oxygen mask, it was so funny.”

Four months after Tommy’s death, the outpouring of grief in Bermondsey has not stopped, as evident by the continued activity on his online memorial page and the various fundraising events held in his name.

Bradley hopes that charity will be a way that Tommy’s “legacy” can continue.

He said: “We’ve already raised £12,500 for a charity fund in his name. Tommy cared so much about charity, this is a way his name can live on - to have a legacy.

We’re going to find good causes in the area and help them out.

I first met Tommy when I was boxing at Fight For Cancer against Ricky Boylan. He was only 18 but I got on well with him straight away. His job that night was too look after me in the changing room and lead me to the ring. I was nervous but he kept reassuring me I’d be alright, and kept saying there was loads of Millwall fans there cheering me on.

We become friends after this, meeting up at Millwall home games and playing in charity games at The Den. He was a lovely lad, funny, bubbly, confident and loyal. His death came as a massive shock and I still can’t believe that he has gone.

KILLER BLOW Smythe will serve half his time

CONVICTED DRUG dealer Lloyd Smythe, 29, delivered a “boxing jab” without warning to the head of Tommy Blackmore as the victim tried to stop an argument between two women, the Old Bailey heard at sentencing last week.

Smythe was himself attacked as he tried to flee the scene outside a nightclub near Tower Bridge on June 13 and later handed himself in to police.

He tried to claim he was acting in self-defence, but was forced to admit he hit Tommy in revenge, when confronted with damning CCTV footage.

Members of Tommy's family left court last Friday as the distressing footage was played, while one person shouted 'c***' as Smythe was seen landing the fatal blow.

The Old Bailey heard Smythe told police he punched Tommy because he felt “pissed off” after wrongly believing the victim had taken and smashed his mobile phone.

He was arrested for murder but pleaded guilty to a lesser offence of manslaughter last week.

Sentencing him to five-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, of which he will serve half, Judge Richard Hone QC said described the attack as

“gratuitous and unprovoked violence and a vicious punch”.

“I totally reject any suggestion of even limited provocation”, he said.

“You may not realise it, but you have passed a life sentence on his family.

No sentence of mine can repair their loss.”

Sarah Plaschkes QC told the court Tommy had been chatting and dancing with friends that night.

As revellers spilled out of the club at around 2.30am some scuffles broke out.

She said: “Tommy was stood talking to two young women, trying to calm them down. He was acting as a peacemaker.

“This defendant walked in front of a car to where Tommy was stood.

Tommy didn’t see the defendant approach him and the Crown say in a completely unprovoked attack this defendant punched Tommy once really hard to the head.

“The blow was a boxing jab, delivered without warning straight into the side of Tommy's head and neck area. Tommy didn't see it coming.”

Nurses reduce painful pressure ulcers THE NUMBER of people with painful pressure ulcers in Lambeth and Southwark’s care homes is falling thanks to a campaign by Guy’s and

St Thomas’ nurses.

Since the Zero Pressure campaign began in April 2014, nine out of 14 care homes have gone more than a year without a resident developing a pressure ulcer. The other five have not had a pressure ulcer for more than 200 days.

Claire Acton, Tissue Viability Nurse Manager, says: “Around half a million people in the UK get a pressure ulcer every year and people over 70 are particularly vulnerable.

New Non-Executive Director

DR PRIYA Singh has been appointed to serve as a NonExecutive Director on the Board of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Due to her role as Executive Director of the Medical Protection Society, as well as a background in general practice, Dr Singh brings substantial experience to her new role, which formally starts on 1 November.

Her career at the Medical Protection Society spanned more than 20 years. She was responsible for the provision of advice and support to 290,000 doctors, dentists, and other health professionals around the world.

Dr Singh’s appointment was approved at a full meeting of the Trust’s Council of Governors, which includes elected representatives of patients, members of the public and staff.

Dr Singh says: “The Trust has an excellent reputation as a leader in healthcare, education and research. It is a privilege to be joining the Guy's and St Thomas' team.”

She replaces Mike Franklin, who has been a Non-Executive Director at the Trust since 2007 and is stepping down after serving two terms on the Board.

A JUNIOR football team raised hundreds of pounds for the Evelina Children’s Hospital at the weekend when it all kicked off between their coaches and their parents.

Jamie Mehmet, who runs the Ballers Football Academy in Rotherhithe, organised the

charity tournament for the grown-ups to help the News reach its £100,000 target for the life-saving facility. We are now over the £93,000 mark.

He was overwhelmed with interest and raised over £350 on the day, which saw the coaches victorious against some very determined parents, with a 4-1 final score.

“It was a brilliant day,” said Jamie. “It brought so many families together from all different backgrounds together. It was a great community event and people are already asking when the next tournament will be held.” The Ballers Academy kids had a great time watching their parents run around the pitch “like headless chickens,”

according to Jamie, adding “it’s nice to know we’ve helped a little towards a good cause too. Ballers is so much more than just a coaching academy and this shows we are going in the right direction by bringing the local community together.”

BOROUGH: An application for a new secondary school at the site of the old Southwark Fire Station was submitted by Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation this week.

If the application is successful, the co-ed school, provisionally named Haberdashers’ Aske’s Borough Academy, would open its doors in September 2017 or 2018.

The school will first admit a 180pupil Year 7, accepting a new class every year until the school is full.

Eventually the school will also have a sixth form with 250 places.

Earlier this year, Boris Johnson instructed the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority to accept a bid from developers to convert Southwark Fire Station into a school and housing.

Adrian Percival, chief executive of the federation, said: “We are delighted to be working with local parents to set up a new school in SE1. We hope that the distinctive Askean ethos of our schools and our values of academic excellence, personal responsibility and mutual respect will be appealing to the families in the area.”

Fireworks show to be ticketed but still free says council SOUTHWARK: Remember, remember, you need a ticket on the 5th of November if you plan to attend the borough’s annual fireworks night.

The celebration’s popularity has soared in recent years, with 33,000 people attending last year’s event.

Attendees will need to apply for a free ticket for next month’s event, a measure the council says will help with overcrowding and safety.

Last year people complained that they were getting crushed in the queue to get into the park.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for business, employment and culture, said: “We know how popular this event has become in recent years, with the number of people attending increasing by 175% since 2012.

“While that is fantastic for the borough, our utmost priority is to ensure the fireworks remain a safe event for all. That is why this year we have decided to ticket the event to help us manage crowds.”

The fireworks show will be held on Thursday, November 5, in Southwark Park, Bermondsey. Gates will be open from 5pm and last entry is at 6.30pm.

Council finance boss ‘not rushing to welcome’ business rates change

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S finance boss has said she is not rushing to welcome radical changes announced by George Osborne this week which would allow local authorities to keep hold of millions raised in business rates every year.

The borough will collect £215 million in business rates this financial year but currently has to hand it all over to central government, which then redistributes the national total across the country, so that places with fewer businesses still have money to fund services.

The Chancellor’s announcement at the Conservative Party Conference this week would mean councils like Southwark would no longer receive a government grant, which this year will total £195million for the borough, but they would be able to keep the business rates they collected.

Cllr Fiona Colley, Southwark’s cabinet member for finance, is remaining cautious in her response to the news, which could see the borough’s coffers swelled by £20million.

“While Southwark could benefit from these changes, we won’t rush to welcome them until we are clearer on the details,” she said.

“Our central London location, and the fact that the council has done a huge amount both to bring big businesses to the borough, and to support small and medium sized enterprises, means that we generate a good amount of business rates relative to many other councils.

However, the devil is in the detail, and if we lose other funding streams and are expected to take on even more services, any benefit for our residents could be lost.

“We do welcome, however, any signs that government is devolving powers to councils, which are best placed to serve our local communities,” she added.

This Lexus is made from car-board

AN ORIGAMI-inspired car made entirely out of sheets of cardboard has been created by a Bermondsey-based laser cutting company.

Lasercut Works, of Raymouth Road, put aside plastic and metal to create a working, life-size model of a Lexus car using just cardboard.

The project used a total of 1,700 sheets of cardboard cut to specific sizes and took three months to

complete, with each piece painstakingly glued to the body of the vehicle by hand.

Daniel Ryan said: “When people come past they take a double take and think ‘hang on a second, is that a digital piece of work in the real world?’ It’s a cross-over between animation and reality and I think that surprise is what’s so special about the project.”

The vehicle will be revealed to the public as a star attraction at the Grand Designs live show in Birmingham from 8 October.

Pensioners’ party at The Den

HUNDREDS OF OAPs celebrated International Older People’s Day with a special party at the executive suite at Millwall FC last week.

The golden oldies had a “wonderful” time at the 1940sthemed bash on October 1, said Simone Morrison, the Healthy Living Manager at Age UK Lewisham and Southwark.

She said: “It was beautiful, wonderful, and very well attended.

We had over 230 older people there and a huge number of charities, and everyone had a lovely time.”

Attendees enjoyed a three-course meal, ate a cake in the shape of an old-fashioned wireless, and danced to a band playing some classic tunes from by-gone days.

Homeless put down roots

A GROUND-breaking tenant-run estate is helping homeless people put down roots by awarding them the gardening contract for their grounds.

The D’Eynsford Tenant Management Organisation, which recently took over the running of the Camberwell estate, celebrated the new partnership with homeless charity St Mungo’s Broadway, at a launch event on Monday.

The Putting Down Roots gardening project for people who have been affected by homelessness will now employ two people to tend the estate’s grounds.

Darren Kidson, of D’Eynsford TMO, said: “We are delighted to have awarded our grounds maintenance contract to Putting Down Roots (PDR).

“Our residents, volunteers and staff are looking forward to working with PDR to make a real difference to the estate and work together to make it an even better place to live.”

‘Rocket’ tower plan doesn’t take off ROTHERHITHE

A PROPOSED 100m-tall skyscraper shaped like a rocket ship has been rejected by Southwark Council’s planning committee, who said that the building design was “incongruous, isolated and alien.”

The bizarre Southwark Street proposal was slammed by council officers, whose report claimed the design “would cause unacceptable harm” to the borough’s skyline.

It added: “The rocket reference is completely alien to the character and identity of Southwark, and indeed London as a whole.”

The scheme proposed demolishing the current site at 55 Southwark Street, currently an art school and car park, and replacing it with a 30-storey tower, including a theatre, museum, bar offices and flats.

As well as the out-of-this-world design, the application noted that the tower would include just nine large residences, despite having space for “around 30.”

This meant that it also fell foul of the council’s affordable homes provision.

The development’s design, according to its website, was inspired by Yuri Gagarin, the Russian cosmonaut who achieved “one of the most important and spectacular events of the 20th century” when he became the first man to orbit the earth.

The website added: “His image and that of his rocket lifting into space have become iconic illustrations of modern innovation, and his name has become synonymous with courage and fortitude.”

Controversial woodland cemetery plans voted through Government asked to intervene

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S controversial plans to create nearly 5,000 new burial spaces in naturally occurring cemetery woodlands were voted through this week, despite a campaign group appealing to the government to step in.

Save Southwark Woods (SSW) have been battling against the plans to use green spaces in the borough’s cemeteries for new graves for months and there were more than 600 objections to the applications registered online.

Campaigners requested the

Department of Communities and Local Government look into the public consultation carried out in 2011, which informed the council’s burial strategy, as they say it was misleading and surveyed a small number of Southwark residents.

The decision to approve the cemetery plans taken at the planning committee on Tuesday night will not be binding until the DCLG has decided whether to call in the applications or not.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment and public realm, is resolved that continuing to provide burial space within the borough, which is due to run out by 2017, is a matter of “common decency”.

Over 400 new homes outlined in Elephant vision

A MAMMOTH new development has been proposed for the Elephant and Castle roundabout as plans for 450 new homes go out to public consultation.

The Skipton House office block by the Bakerloo underground entrance on London Road is currently home to the Department of Health, but their contract expires next year.

At that point London & Regional Properties plan to ‘redevelop’ the block so it includes twice the amount of office space, 450 new homes and a publicly accessible roof top garden.

Skipton Street, which used to run through the site, would also be reinstated as part of the new development designed by architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, trumpeted the plans, saying the development would “complement and

enhance” the council’s vision for the new Elephant and Castle ‘town centre’.

“The proposals for Skipton House will transform the gateway into the London South Bank University, create new offices for local businesses, improve open and green spaces around the site and provide even more cultural amenities to the area to put Elephant and Castle firmly on the map,” he said.

A public exhibition showing the plans for Skipton House will take place over three days at London South Bank University’s Keyworth Centre in Keyworth Street on Thursday October 8 and Friday October 9 between 12noon and 7pm and Saturday October 10 between 10am and 4pm.

Two storey school gets go-ahead

SOUTHWARK: Plans for a new two-storey special school were given the go-ahead this week as Southwark Council’s school expansion programme continues.

The former Highshore School building in Bellenden Road, Peckham, which has stood empty since the school relocated to Camberwell in 2013, will be knocked down to make way for the new development.

The new facility will provide a new home for the Cherry Garden special school, currently located in Bermondsey with capacity for 93 pupils.

The future use of the existing Cherry Gardens School is yet to be decided.

There were nineteen letters of support for the new Highshore School and five letters of objection from local residents concerned about loss of light, privacy and views and the planning committee voted to approve the plans at a meeting on Tuesday evening.

Anyone aged over 65 or with an existing health problem is eligible for a free flu jab while children aged two, three and four can continue to get the nasal spray vaccination from their GP. Children in years one and two in primary schools in London are also being offered the free flu nasal spray vaccination this year between October and December.

Dr Noel Baxter, a local GP and clinical lead for respiratory conditions at NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The nasal spray vaccination is a quick, painless and effective way for children to be protected without the need for injections.

“Flu can be a very unpleasant illness in children as they suffer the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills and aching muscles. Some children develop complications of flu such as bronchitis, pneumonia and painful middle ear infection.

“The flu vaccination will help protect your child from flu and also reduce the chance of flu spreading to others.

Older people, pregnant women and children with health problems like blood cancers are particularly vulnerable to flu, so getting your child

vaccinated means that you are helping others too.

“Anyone over the age of 65 or with an existing health problem should also make sure they get the flu jab as flu can make the effects of existing conditions worse.”

The ideas focus on improving access to high quality services outside of hospital in places closer to where people live, alongside promoting health and wellbeing to prevent ill health, and helping people with long term conditions manage their illnesses so that they can keep well for longer.

IT’S NOW time to make some real decisions about your future once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the

look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting.

After spending the whole of your life in school you might think that re-

sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question.

However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital. Countless people have had to work that bit harder and

give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start a new one to get on

to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult.

After all you don’t have to be there it is your choice. This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that Alevels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the self-motivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting.

Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

DON'T need to tell people living in Southwark that we have a housing crisis.

The council continues to build more than other London boroughs, but with less and less help from central government. Rising rents have contributed to many local people needing tax credits to top up incomes that don't cover the higher rents and other living costs central London demands.

With house building at its lowest level nationally in almost a century, the Tory Government's proposal to now cut tax credits has shocked many people. Letters will soon go to 6,200 people in Bermondsey and Old Southwark telling them that the Tories are breaking promises from May’s election – including from David Cameron – to not cut this vital income top-up for working people.

Many of the people directly affected will lose £1,300 a year according to the Government's own statistics. Figures I secured from the House of Commons Library show that over 4,000 of the people affected in Bermondsey and Old Southwark have children. Working families losing out as a direct result of this Government’s actions. We know child poverty is rising after five years of Tory and Lib Dem mistakes hitting local families; sadly this policy will make matters worse.

The Government also plans to force housing associations to sell off some of their homes that we desperately need – and that are genuinely affordable. If that wasn't damaging enough, Ministers have also suggested they will impose rent controls on housing associations. I met with three housing associations who have homes across Southwark. The combined effect of Government plans on Peabody, Riverside and One Housing could cost them £175 million over this parliament. That mindboggling sum might prevent them delivering more affordable homes.

I am pressing for changes in my role on the Welfare Reform and Work Bill Committee. The Employment Minister already accepted that my submissions were accurate on how Government plans would hit disabled people and carers. She’s promised to provide further information on how the Department for Work and Pensions will mitigate the effect. I won’t hold my breath for concrete changes but it would be nice to secure a small victory within my first six months in parliament!

Could be waiting 100s of years for kitchens and bathrooms?

THOSE SOUTHWARK Council tenants who are waiting for a new kitchen or bathroom - maybe even both - at the present level of installing them 92 new kitchens and 112 new bathrooms since the 2014 local election...

You have some wait to reach Southwark Council’s target of 17,500 new kitchens and 21,400 new bathrooms. In this term of office Southwark Council, in the three years left, will complete 224 new kitchens and 184 new bathrooms. For the council target to be reached from 2014 when started, for new kitchens it will take 234 years and for bathrooms 348 years.

None of the spin put forward by Labour in the 2014 council election was costed and was only to get them to win, with no concern over what it might mean to the people of Southwark. It's now coming home to roost and is being seen for what it really was - just spin.

Mayor Boris has messed up 24hr tube LAST YEAR the Mayor of London unveiled plans for a 24 hour tube.

This could be a welcome development but the Mayor has failed so far to properly think through a number of issues, on staffing, on safety and on noise disruption.

First, tube unions are rightly angry at the prospect of existing tube workers being forced to work through the night when this was not in their original job description.

Secondly, there are genuine concerns around solo staffing of night

tube stations and TfL may need to look at recruiting additional staff in order to operate the service safely.

Finally, a number Londoners are concerned by the noise impact of tube trains running close to their homes 24/7. TfL need to engage with residents to resolve such concerns.

I have long supported the ambition of running an all-night tube service but it needs to be done properly and the challenges it raises overcome.

Boris Johnson’s decision to delay the implementation is perhaps a belated recognition that this is something that cannot simply be rushed through and that proper dialogue with tube unions and

residents needs to take place.

More retirement bungalows will help house larger families

THERE SHOULD be some motivation to the council to build retirement bungalows or apartments, afterall, it would free up properties for larger families.

There are several OAPs living alone yet have two or three bedrooms. If they had 'somewhere' to move to, surely this would help?

But, there are often fine and mild spells when the autumn sun can feel warm.

The planting season for shrubs and trees starts in October and lasts until March.

Although five months seems like plenty of time, the ground can become waterlogged or frozen as winter sets in, making conditions difficult from November onwards. There is usually a better choice of shrubs available from suppliers at the beginning of the season. Whilst planning new additions to the garden or window box, something more modest to consider growing is the Snakes Head Fritillary. This spring flowering bulb has lantern like blooms of white or pinkish-purple which are attractive and unusual.

With shortening day-light hours and the onset of worsening weather, opportunities for working in the garden are becoming limited. Make the most of any fine days – tidy and cut back perennials; continue weeding beds and loosening compacted soil, this will expose the larvae of moths, beetles and slugs/snails to the birds who feed on them (useful for pest control next season). Clear leaves regularly, if they are left around on grass it will turn yellow.

The main seasonal colour is from berries such as rosehips and hawthorn plus the garden shrubs Cotoneaster and Pyracantha which are laden with bright orange-red berries (not edible). The leaves are turning into rich autumn colours of buttery yellow, bronze and flaming red. Michaelmas Daisies and Dahlias will continue flowering whilst the weather stays dry and mild.

October is traditionally ‘apple month’ and festivals have been re-established around the country. Apple Day in Borough Market will be on Sunday 25th October from 12pm until 4pm. Rarely found in gardens, it is a vigorous climber, tolerant of a range of growing conditions, attracts butterflies and provides habitat for wild birds. Hop flowers resemble little soft green fir cones, they form large bunches on long tendrils (binds). Hops are cultivated commercially and used as a bitter flavouring and preservative in the production of beer. The leaves are slightly aromatic; the flower heads have an interesting herby smell.

Hops have a long tradition of use in herbal medicine, when employed (with other herbs) they can be helpful in treating a wide range of conditions including anxiety, insomnia and digestive disorders.

(Caution: always seek the advice of a professional Herbalist before using herbs/plants medicinally).

Musica chairs

I

quickly realized that going to see La Musica was going to be a different kind of a night as I sat down and noticed that there were instructions on the chairs.

This both annoyed and baffled me at first, as, after a tough week I felt disinclined to partake in removals, writes Matt Baker...

The odd set up and absence of a stage seemed to suggest I would need all my powers of concentration to see through the 110 minute piece. For a start, both actors were perched 20 feet up in a corner with their backs to the public. However, when the show began we, the audience, were faced with two enormous screens showing close ups of both the actors' faces. As unnerving as this was, it sort of draws you in immediately to the dialogue and emotion of the piece.

Here we go I thought, this looks interesting.

characters is electric and slowly more of their past is revealed, with the emotional tension rising with each minute.

The play transforms when the large screens are turned off and the audience seating is rearranged. We all dutifully moved our chairs as if to create a close square around the players who sat facing each other, or stalking among us. The transition from being separate to being amongst the audience worked beautifully to draw us in further to the world of the lost lovers.

Definitely one of the most beautifully performances I have seen this year and a real treat. For something both classic and fresh pop along and I promise you will be very pleased you did.

SHOOTING OF A WALWORTH BOBBY

his year it will be one hundred and five years since a Walworth bobby was shot dead in a bungled burglary which shocked the nation, writes Amelia Burr...

It was Sergeant Robert Bentley’s wedding anniversary and his wife was heavily pregnant with their first son, who would never get to meet his dad.

Robert and Louisa lived on the corner of Villa Street and Aylesbury Road when he went on duty as a City of London police officer and was gunned down in what became known as The Houndsditch Murders.

On December 16, 1910, the Gardstein gang of Latvian revolutionaries tried to rob a jeweller's shop in Houndsditch to raise funds for propaganda and help their fellow activists back home.

The job had been planned meticulously, with the anarchists renting rooms in the building behind the shop. They used a 60-foot rubber gas hose to use gas from their building to burn through the jeweller’s safe.

What the bandits hadn’t banked on was it being the Sabbath in a largely Jewish area. In the quiet the unusual noises alerted the neighbours, who called the police.

Unarmed, 36-year-old Robert Bentley, was the first to enter the building the burglars were using as a hideout and he was the first to be shot dead.

Fighting their way out of the building, the robbers then killed Robert’s comrades Sergeant Charles Tucker, 46, and PC Walter Charles Choat, 34.

Two officers were also injured in what is still considered the worst incident for British police in peacetime.

One of the burglars, George Gardstein, was accidentally shot by his friends in the confusion and died from his wounds the next day.

The other two of the gang members escaped and hid out in Stepney, leading to the famous Sidney Street Siege of January 1911.

There was a great deal of public anger as the offenders were categorised as ‘aliens’ and inhuman ‘foreigners’.

An informant tipped off the police that the two remaining robbers were hiding out at 100 Sidney Street and a small army of two hundred officers and a detachment of soldiers were dispatched to the scene, where they were joined by then Home Secretary, Winston Churchill.

thousands of spectators massed outside.

The two Latvians were heavily outgunned but they held their own in that East London tenement for seven hours. The siege only ended when the house caught on fire and the two men were trapped inside.

The fire brigade was already on the scene when the building burst into flames, but Winston Churchill ordered them not to extinguish the blaze.

The fire gutted the building and as the roof caved in, firefighters

struggled to prevent damage to the surrounding buildings. A wall collapsed and buried five people, one of whom, a firefighter, died the next day in hospital.

The bodies of the two Latvians were discovered inside the house, one on the first floor where he had been shot, and the other on the ground floor where he had been overcome by smoke.

The cause of the fire was never discovered.

The siege was a media sensation of

its time. Newsreel cameras were rolling throughout, and the first films were showing in West End cinemas that same evening.

As for Walworth’s own Sergeant Bentley, who had served in the Boer War, he was buried with the highest honours after a service at St Paul’s Cathedral – the first time it had been used for the funeral of someone with the rank of civil police.

Robert’s son was born the day after the shooting and named after his father - Robert Eric Alfred Bentley.

A year later the Daily Mirror went to visit Louise and baby Robert on his first birthday when he was described as “a fair haired, chubby-faced, brown-eyed baby boy now and not at all shy.”

But sadly, baby Bobby didn’t make it to his fourth birthday, as he died from diphtheria in Stockwell hospital, aged just three-years-old.

Huge crowds gathered outside the family home in Villa Street when baby Bobby’s body was brought from the hospital in a hearse for the funeral.

Robert Bentley (Main) was 36-years-old and about to be a father when he was gunned down along with his comrades Sergeant Charles Tucker, 46 (Bottom right), and PC Walter Charles Choat, 34 (Top right).

It certainly seemed that way when I battled torrential rain with a flimsy umbrella to get to Village East, a restaurant on Bermondsey Street, last week, writes Ellie Ross...

I pitched up with a drenched coat and wet feet.

Happily, everything about the place felt warm and cosy.

My soggy umbrella was whisked away from me by a smiling waitress; the lighting had the same tinge of orange that comes from a crackling fire; and I was shown to a cosy little booth with plush leather seats and a twinkling tea light.

The atmosphere felt relaxed, with a few groups of friends and after-work

drinkers enjoying a brew by the bar or in the upstairs snug.

Things were looking up.

To mark the change of seasons, Village East has just introduced a new menu for autumn.

The old favourites are still there the sirloin steak and cheeseburgers, for example - but new dishes have been added, or existing choices have been given an autumnal twist.

The wild mushroom tagliatelle (£13.50) and pork belly starter (£8) are both brand new, while the scallops starter (£12) has a new garnish to reflect the season.

Of course, you could come here just for cocktails.

They have fun names, such as “Would I Lychee You” and “Southwark Smile”, but I was tempted by “The Earl of Bermondsey”.

True to any Earl’s style, it came in a teacup, compete with a silver spoon and sugar cube on the saucer.

“The more you stir in the sugar, the more bitter it becomes”, the waitress tells me, laying down the tipple.

That’s because this is no ordinary sugar cube, but one that has been soaked in Campari, giving an extra kick to the Earl Grey-infused gin

concussion.

Good Karma (a gin and elderflower blend) arrived with lovely sprigs of fresh mint and crushed ice, but you couldn’t taste the elderflower much.

Starters were a mixed bag.

The scallops were first rate - three good sized, perfectly tender pieces of meat, expertly drizzled with artichoke puree, surrounded by caramelised apples and flecked with cress.

But the crab was disappointing there just wasn’t enough meat on the claws, and the watery noodles on the side didn’t help matters.

For mains, I went for the panroasted duck breast.

There was ample meat, which was nicely pink and sitting on a bed of veg - confit heritage carrots and roasted cauliflower.

It was all drizzled with Madeira jus, which complemented the flavour of the meat.

The venison is a new addition to the menu for autumn, and was my guest’s choice.

It was delicious - a generous serving of meat that was tender and rich in flavour.

It was accompanied by truffled

creamed leeks and roasted red onions, a consistency which worked perfectly with hunks of venison.

Both mains were just what you need on a drab autumn day - hearty, wholesome and precisely the kind of thing that warms the cockles after a spell in the rain.

The meal ended on a good note thanks to a couple of indulgent desserts. The dulce de leche cheesecake was superb - deliciously sweet and smooth on top, with a lovely crunchy base that Mary Berry would have been proud of.

It was complemented by a serving of deliciously sticky caramelised bananas.

But if you could choose just one dessert, the apple rose would be a good choice. Two pastries, artistically crafted into beautiful rose heads, arrived dusted in icing sugar and next to a scoop of very moreish rum and raisin ice cream.

It was like the most appetising looking apple strudel, and the blend of warm pastry with cold ice cream was a winner.

So yes. Village East may already be an established restaurant on Bermondsey Street, but its new menu for autumn is well worth a

taste.

Particularly as it will get you out of the rain and into the warm on a cold autumnal day.

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

(3) Entering, exiting or stopping on Rothsay Street between the junction of A100 Tower Bridge Road and the common boundary of Nos. 1a-1b Rothsay Street;

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

Lionesses bow to Royals

MILLWALL LIONESSES fell to a hefty 4-0 defeat on Sunday as already promoted Reading Ladies put them to the sword at The Den. A hat trick from Helen Ward and a Lauren Bruton effort were more than enough for the Berkshire side to secure the points.

The Lionesses have one league fixture left this season, that being an away fixture against Doncaster Rovers Belles on October 18, a game that starts at 2pm.

Double delight for Docklands

DOCKLANDS U16 and U14 sides completed a win double for the club on Sunday when they both picked up good victories.

FISHER FC will play their part in Non-League Day this weekend and they hope a bumper crowd will attend their game against Sevenoaks Town at Champion Hill.

With no Premier League or Championship fixtures, and with Millwall also having no game on Saturday, the Rotherhithe club hope people will take the chance to come down to East Dulwich to sample the delights of non-league football.

To entice people along the club have halved ticket prices to £3.50 for

adults, £2 concessions, for SE16 residents and season ticket holders at Premier League and Football League clubs.

The offer has also been extended to members of the emergency services by the Southern Counties East side.

As usual kids under sixteen, accompanied by an adult, get in free.

A club spokesman said: “Manager Dean Harrison wants a crowd of at least 200 on Saturday, so why not come down and join the fun.”

Fisher are inviting along special guests for the day, and they will also

be holding a raffle with top prizes.

Children from Cherry Garden School in Bermondsey will be club mascots on the day.

On the pitch last weekend Fisher fell to a 3-0 defeat in the FA Vase against Southern Combination Football League club Hailsham Town.

TWO BOXERS from Fisher Boxing Club commenced their bids for an ABA novice crown with victories last week.

Denzil Ntim-Mensah, 20, won his first bout in the south-east London section of the competition and he was joined in the next round of the Senior England Boxing Development Championships by club mate Atomiwa ‘Big Tom’ Magbagdeola, 22, who also secured a win in the last seven days.

Club head coach Steve Hiser told the News: “Both boys boxed very well and we are expecting big things from them in the future. This was Tom’s third fight and although he picked up a cut, that the ref checked a few times, he did enough to get the decision.”

Both fighters will be in action this week as they seek to secure a London title that will enable them to take part in the next part of the competition against winners from other regions of England.

MILLWALL’S UNBEATEN away record this season came to a spectacular end at London Road last Saturday as they lost an eightgoal thriller against Peterborough.

The Lions were 2-0 down with just eighteen minutes gone but were level ten minutes after the break.

Graham Westley’s side went 4-2 up on 72 minutes before Mark Beevers halved the deficit two minutes later in a breathless game.

But nine minutes from time Jon Taylor

was allowed to work his way into the box unchallenged to smash his second of the game past Jordan Archer.

Millwall lost Jimmy Abdou to injury after just four minutes and that turned out to be a crucial factor in Peterborough’s second goal. His replacement Ben Thompson, on his twentieth birthday, lost the ball to former Lions youth player Michael Bostwick and when he passed to Taylor the winger evaded a tackle before arrowing a drive into the top corner from 25 yards.

Neil Harris’ side had fallen behind three minutes earlier when Lee Angol was quickest to react in the box after

Taylor’s shot had come back off the post.

Peterborough had clearly been directed by their manager to shoot whenever they were within 30 yards of Millwall’s goal and Taylor and Marcus Maddison, especially, were clearly following the instructions to the letter with the latter fizzing another effort just past Archer’s post.

But if Millwall were shocked by the concessions they showed commendable composure to stick to the game plan and they dominated the rest of the half.

Peterborough lost their goalkeeper Ben Alnwick after 30 minutes and his

replacement, eighteen-year-old rookie Dion-Curtis Henry, had to pick the ball out of the back of his net twice before the 55th minute after headers from Byron Webster and Tony Craig.

Millwall were on top at that point but an injury to Ed Upson, who was putting in his best performance of the season, disrupted the momentum and Chris Forrester reacted quickest in the box to put the Posh 3-2 up in the 69th minute.

With the away side pushing up and leaving space at the back Conor Washington sprinted onto a through ball to finish coolly past Archer before Taylor had the final word.

TONY CRAIG says he is disappointed with Millwall’s current league position given the quality he believes is in the squad.

The Lions’ unbeaten away record this season came to an end after a dramatic 5-3 defeat to Peterborough last weekend, a result that leaves them in fifteenth place in the League One table, Craig, who scored the first goal of his fourth spell with the club at London Road, admits he expects an improvement after the international break.

“You do look at the season around ten league games in to assess where you are and at the moment with the squad we’ve got it isn’t good enough,” the Lions captain said. “I think we’d be the first to

put our hands up and admit that.”

“But there are still many games to go and the only way is up.

With Millwall’s game against Doncaster, which was to have taken place this weekend, postponed due to international call-ups, manager Neil Harris and his management team have an extended period to work with the squad ahead of the next league fixture against Swindon at The Den on October 17.

That will kick off a testing period of five games in fourteen days, with resources already stretched after the injuries suffered by Jimmy Abdou and Ed Upson at the ABAX Stadium. That was a stark illustration of how quickly things can change and Harris this week brought in Wolves player George Saville on loan to boost the midfield options.

Millwall’s form following the last international break in September. Harris’ side won three and drew one of their next five games in the league and Craig is hoping for a similar effect again.

He said: “I think maybe the break has come at a good time for us again when the gaffer can stamp his authority on the squad and go through some things that haven’t been quite going right for us.

We’ll get to work on those things and then we’ll go again.

“We’re all in it together and striving to improve.”

Despite last Saturday’s defeat to Graham Westley’s side, Millwall are just three points off Rochdale in the last playoff spot. However, Blackpool, third from bottom, are also just three points behind the Lions and Craig recognises the value in putting a winning run together.

“The way the league is, two or three

wins in a row could push you right up into the play-off positions,” he said.

“We’ve got some very good, exciting players and we’re doing our utmost to get results. We’re only 11 games in and there’s a lot of football to be played and a lot of places for the supporters to see.

“We said we’d look at the league after ten or so games. It’s not quite good enough, but we’re only at the start still.

“We’ve got great characters here, a great squad and we’re all in it together.

There are some great lads in the dressing room. We know at the moment some results haven’t been right for us but we’ve got time off now from the league to put that right.

“I think when you look back Millwall is a club that whenever it’s done well hasn’t started well. If you look at last season they did start well and look what happened there.”

Just as they did after the 1-0 win over Peterborough on September 1 they entered their second international break of the season buoyed by progression in the Football League Trophy.

The draw for the area quarter-finals will take place on Saturday morning, but Neil Harris didn’t allow himself to be tempted to think of a return to a showpiece final for the first time since 2010.

The Lions boss said: “We’re just going to think about the next game, I know that’s really boring! It’s two good wins in this competition but it’s early days and there are some really good teams left in it as well. There’s a long way to go and we look forward to the next one.

“What I can do with this competition is say to the players: ‘Go and enjoy yourselves and build momentum.’

That’s what we’ve done. We’ve got a game plan, as ever. The boys know their jobs inside-out. They know I want to win every game. In no uncertain terms they know that, so in the next round we want to win again.”

Two goals from Aiden O’Brien and Lee Gregory gave Millwall an ultimately comfortable victory after Northampton had threatened to make it an awkward evening in front 2,254 supporters at The Den. Harris handed debuts to George Saville and Joe Martin while Jack Powell and Lee Martin came back into the side with Millwall missing six first-team players through injury, suspension and international call-ups.

Carlos Edwards was rested having played every minute of seven games since his comeback after almost a year out injured. Fred Onyedinma was also on the bench with O’Brien starting on the right of midfield and Lee Gregory partnering Steve Morison - making his 150th appearance for Millwall - up front.

Northampton didn’t play like a side a division below their opponents and started with the same confidence and swagger that had seen them knock League One Colchester and Blackpool out of cup competitions already this season.

But for all their pretty passing football and dominance of possession, they lacked incision in key attacking areas and Jordan Archer was rarely troubled in the Millwall goal.

He was lucky when Lawson D’Ath smacked a ball off the angle of crossbar and post in the second half but by that stage Millwall were two goals up and, as on Saturday, they arrived in another three-minute spell

BOSS WANTS MORE CONSISTENCY

To his credit, Morison didn’t let those misses dull his performance and it was he who laid on the second goal for Gregory when he sprinted onto his strike partner’s pass in the left channel with Northampton’s defence out of position and then curled a perfect left-footed cross to

the edge of the six-yard box where Gregory arrived at pace to tap home.

Harris now feels the centre-forward he signed from Leeds in the summer is setting the example for some of his younger colleagues.

He explained: “Steve Morison is Steve Morison, he shows flashes of brilliance and he leads the line well.

He played with me and I like to think he learned from me how to be a senior Millwall striker: how you can control the crowd with what you do; how you can set the tempo for your teammates with what you do. He’s certainly starting to do that.”

Harris wasn’t making any predictions about what the victory

would do for their season, but he did acknowledge its importance.

He said: “What this does, we’ve got an eleven-day break, and it gives us focus, energy and positivity because our last home game going into the next one against Swindon was a win and a clean sheet. I think it’s a big, big win for us.”

But the Millwall manager is using the eleven-day period with his coaches to work on the side’s “inconsistency”.

That streak was highlighted again last weekend when the Lions recovered a two-goal deficit at Peterborough and looked to be in the ascendancy only to leak three goals in the last 21 minutes.

And although Harris isn't surprised by it, it's an aspect of Millwall's game he hopes will improve with work on the training ground.

He explained: “The inconsistency is certainly something that we expected to a certain degree. We’ve spoken about how to improve and how to minimise that inconsistency.

“We’ve also been inconsistent during games. We’re trying to bring stability to a team and formation and we’re relatively happy with what we’ve done there with the odd tweak, personnel-wise.

“Consistency over a 90-minute period is key and when we’ve had that we’ve been really good.

“When we’ve slipped out of that consistency we’ve caused ourselves problems. We’ve loads to improve on.

“I’m really pleased with the group as a whole, really pleased with the squad and dressing room we’ve built. There are some really good characters, a good togetherness that has stood us in good stead at difficult times.

“The players have stuck together and little things like coming back from 2-0 down last weekend, although we went on to lose the game, coming back in the first place is key.

“So that belief and desire and spirit is there but then it’s about getting that consistency and calmness and that’s something you can coach. You can teach that and we’ve spent time talking about that balance in games.

“We’d rather play Saturday again, like the last time. We’d rather play and build momentum but we can utilise the time when we’re not playing to get better and work on where we need to improve.

“Myself and my coaches are really keen to work on certain areas and work together as a team.”

NEIL HARRIS praised new recruit George Saville after he made his debut for the Lions in the 2-0 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over League Two Northampton on Tuesday night.

Millwall signed the midfielder on a 28-day emergency loan from Wolves this week and Harris said the deal could be extended further.

Saville, 22, played three games for the Lions on loan from Chelsea at the end of 2012-13 and the

following season started 33 times for Brentford as they won promotion from League One. He also helped Bristol City to promotion last season after Steve Cotterill brought him to the club on loan last January.

Harris said he came “highly recommended” by former Millwall boss Kenny Jackett, who signed him for current club Wolves in August 2014.

Saville produced a physical, energetic display against Chris Wilder’s side as Millwall progressed to the area quarterfinals in a competition in which they last reached the final in 1999

when they lost 1-0 to Wigan at Wembley.

Millwall only confirmed the signing of Saville hours before they played the Cobblers, but with five midfielders missing through injury, suspension and international duty he was thrust straight into competitive action by Harris.

The Millwall boss has used his connection with Jackett to bolster his side’s midfield in the short term, but could seek to negotiate a longer deal after the initial period ends.

played a lot of football and come straight in having not trained for three days.

“He gave us a little bit of aggression in the middle of the park but also composure with the football. He comes with good recommendations from some good football people.

“I was really pleased with him.

That’s the standard he’s set now and he’s got to keep to that standard and improve as his match fitness improves.

“We’ll see how the 28-day period goes. It depends on Wolves and depends on how we’re going in the meantime.”

Abdou damaged his shoulder just four minutes into last Saturday’s defeat to Peterborough, while Upson suffered a knee injury in a collision in the second half of that game.

Upson could be sidelined for up to six weeks with Abdou facing an even longer stretch out.

That leaves the Lions lacking experience in midfield with Jack Powell and George Saville starting against Northampton on Tuesday and Ben Thompson coming off the bench.

Harris now has time before the next league game to consider if he needs reinforcements.

He said: “I can’t hide the fact that they’re two really important players for us. Jimmy is Millwall, he just gives us that spirit and energy.

“Ed’s done really well. We talk about players making an impact whether starting or coming off the bench and he does that. He gets the way we want to play, they both get it. They’re big losses, but then other people will get the opportunity.

“We have an opportunity to work with George, who did really well. Lee Martin has come back into the side and gave us something different, the positions he was getting in were great and I was really pleased with him.

“There will be opportunities for young lads. Jack got his chance, Ben came on in the last two games and I thought he was outstanding when he stepped onto the pitch, so we’ll see.”
