A HOSPITAL Trust has circulated a memo to its staff asking where they can make cutbacks, as it revealed £86million of savings were

needed in this financial year just to balance the books.

ING’S COLLEGE Hospital needs to find £86million of savings to stay in the black this financial year.

That is a staggering amount for any organisation to find in ‘efficiency savings’, let alone a service already stretched to its limits by an ageing population.

The hardworking, dedicated staff at King’s must have been pulling their hair out when they got the memo asking how they could help find an extra £2million down the back of the waiting room sofa. “Do you really need to fill a vacancy in your team?” reads the document, which confirms the hospital has already identified £50million in savings through cutting back on agency staff and renegotiating contracts and now just needs to find another £36million.

MP Helen Hayes quite rightly calls for the government to intervene as she says the Trust was not given nearly enough in the settlement it received when it took over the Princess Royal Hospital sites in Bromley and Orpington from the failing South London Healthcare Trust in 2013.

But neither she nor the Trust should remain silent on the elephant in the room – the crippling PFI debt taken on with the Princess Royal. The PFI annual costs were the main driver of the SLHT debts, according to the Secretary of State and a University of London report in 2013 said a large PFI scheme at the Princess Royal was linked to inflation - which means the debt goes up each year from £6million in 2000 to a forecasted £94million in 2031, when the contract comes to a close.

The former Dulwich and West Norwood MP, Tessa Jowell, banged the PFI drum when it came to funding the expansion of Dulwich Hospital, so we will see if Ms Hayes is going to tow the same Blairite line or if she will denounce these private finance schemes for what they are – a virus killing our health service from the inside.

It’s coming home!

ISHER HAS been in exile in the south of the borough for over ten years - now it’s time to bring the club home and make it bigger and better than before.

Even in its heyday when it was in the Conference league in the late 1980s the gates were nothing massive, as the Fisher fan base always played second fiddle to its ‘big brother’ Millwall. But the chairman of the new Fisher FC is right to carve out a place for the club in hearts of local people new and old.

Founded to provide sports facilities for underprivileged youth in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe in 1908, the make-up of the area is completely different now and it’s important that the club bridges the gap between the established families in the area and the newer residents.

We have the chance to have a state-of-theart sports facility on the peninsular and it is down to local people to decide how best the club can serve them. So, don’t be shy and get involved. Club chairman urges fans to send in their ideas for the new ground OLD GROUND BEFORE

WITH JUST months to go until Fisher FC returns home to Rotherhithe, the club’s chairman has issued an appeal to News readers to “help build our club’s future.”

Ben Westmancott is urging fans of the exiled club to send in their ideas about

how best to shape the new ground in Salter Road, which will open in “early 2016.”

He said: “We want fans and residents to send in their ideas for the future of the club and its new home. Should we have a women’s team? A disability team? A walking team? Should we have special fan days or celebrations? What can we do to better represent the community?

“We are looking into a buy-a-brick scheme and several other ways that fans

and residents can get involved – this is our club and we want as many people as possible to be a part of it.”

He added that the consultation was for both old fans and new, for long-time residents who remember and miss the old club and for new residents who may not yet have ever experienced having a local team.

Ben said: “It’s all about gathering ideas from everyone. We owe it to ourselves to make it the best club we

can and turn it into a real positive for the community.”

Fisher FC was formed in 2009 by the club’s fans after the original club Fisher Athletic had been wound up following financial difficulties. These fans have spent the intervening years trying to return to club to its rightful home in the north of the borough, after it was forced to ground-share with Dulwich Hamlet FC at Champion Hill.

Ben said: “It’s taken an absolute age

but we are now so close now to opening the new ground and tremendously excited. It at last seems real. The hardcore fans have been absolutely fantastic, dedicating their time and money to realising this dream. It’s time to bring Fisher home.”

£10k raised at tribute day for Tommy

HUNDREDS OF people joined together to remember Tommy Blackmore last weekend at a special tribute event.

The memorial day took place at Beckenham Football Club and saw nearly £10,000 raised for a charity fund being set up in the late Bermondsey boy’s name.

The amazing total, which is expected to grow after pledges are collected and an auction takes place, will be used to help local charities and causes.

A four-team tournament also took place, with a number of famous faces joining in the fun. Millwall legends Alan Dunne and Gary Alexander showed their support on

and off the pitch, while young Lion Jack Powell handed out the trophies.

Hot off the back of a Women’s FA Cup final win, Gilly Flaherty also showed off her skills in the tournament, which was eventually won by Tommy’s old Dockland Settlements team.

The family fun day, which saw bouncy castles, face-painters, music and dancing, was “absolutely brilliant”, according to event organiser Paul Morrison.

He said: “It was a great crowd and a great day for the boy. There were too many people to count but there must have been at least 500 people.

“It couldn’t have happened without the support of everybody. People were saying that I organised it, but it was everybody pulling together to remember Tommy that made the day such a success.”

Bermondsey girl wins Women’s FA Cup BERMONDSEY

A BERMONDSEY footballer who won the Women’s FA Cup final at the weekend has dedicated her victory to her late friend Tommy Blackmore.

Gilly Flaherty wore a black armband and boots emblazoned with Tommy’s name during the final at Wembley last Saturday. She was also watched by millions on TV as she lifted the famous trophy wearing a special memorial shirt.

The 23-year-old played the full match as her Chelsea side beat Notts County 1-0 in front of a record-breaking crowd for women’s football in England.

“It’s been absolute carnage since”, she told the News. “We went a bit crazy celebrating. I just want to go back and relive every second of the game.

“Notts County were very solid and a hard team to break down and we knew

they would be dangerous from set pieces.

“It’s my sixth FA Cup final win but you never get bored of winning. I’ve set myself a target of winning a few more.”

The Bermondsey girl, who began her career at Millwall Lionesses before enjoying great success at Arsenal and now Chelsea, said she was “so proud” to have paid tribute to Tommy in the home of football.

She said: “It was really special, to be able to take him up there with me. His brothers were in the stadium and we met outside by the Bobby Moore statue after the game. I was really proud.”

She added that she was a “big Bermondsey girl at heart” and vowed to continue to support the community that she still calls home, despite now living in Surrey.

She said: “I do everything I can for the area. Anything I can do to help fundraising, or promoting events, or with my free fitness club – I want to do

everything I can to help.”

Gilly, who is Chelsea’s vice-captain, was joined on the winner’s podium last weekend by Katie Chapman. The club captain is also a Bermondsey girl and began her career, like Gilly, at Millwall.

Gilly said: “I’m so proud of what we’ve done for the community and hope we can keep making memories and doing everyone proud.”

Family call on Millwall fans to sign petition for NHS to fund life-changing drugs for Harvey, 6

A FAMILY of Millwall fans has called on fellow supporters to get behind their little boy’s campaign to get the life-changing drugs he needs.

Six-year-old Harvey is so mad on Millwall that he named his goldfish after Danny Situ and insisted on getting changed into his new kit in the back of the car last week because he couldn’t wait until he got home.

On a scale of one to ten of fandom, dad Dean, 45, describes them both as an eleven.

In a long battle with the NHS to get offer a new drug for Harvey and the 77 other children in the UK with ultra-rare disease, Morquio, the family has launched a petition online to try and get the issue debated in parliament.

With a minimum of ten thousand signatures required for the topic to be raised in the House of Commons, Dean and Harvey’s mum, Vikki, are asking other Millwall fans to back their

campaign.

“It would just be brilliant to have their support,” said Dean, of Galleywall Road, who has been a fan since he was nine-years-old. “We’ve been told we’re the most generous fans when we’ve done collections. It would mean such a lot to know that fans from the same team as the one me and Harvey support are behind us.”

Morquio is an inherited illness which means children like Harvey – who told the News his favourite things are “playing football and eating all the chocolate cake” - rarely grow to above three foot tall or live beyond their twenties. It also means his body and energy levels slowly deteriorate over time. A year ago Harvey was never seen without a ball in his hand, but now he struggles to have his beloved kickabouts because he is so tired and his joints ache from walking.

“Now he’s getting a bit more tired he can’t do it as much as he used to,” said delivery driver Dean. “He’s struggling to kick a ball around now but the medication would help give him more

energy,” added the desperate dad, who said if he had the chance to get up and speak at the next Millwall game he’d say: “Please if you could just hep Harvey to get the petition signed so we can get this medication funded that’s what he desperately needs so he can go to other games. It would change his life.”

After a successful clinical trial, the drug Vimizim was shown to help children like Harvey grow stronger, need fewer operations, walk without mobility aids and live for longer.

Since it was licensed by the European Medicines Agency in April last year, Harvey and his mum and dad have been waiting to hear whether the NHS would pay for the expensive drug to be offered in this country.

Man jailed for 14 years for stabbing man in the face Kirt Waldron

A BERMONDSEY man who stabbed a reveller in the face three times at last year’s Notting Hill Carnival has been jailed for fourteen years.

Kirt Waldron, of Buttermere Close, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent at Isleworth Crown Court last Thursday.

The 38-year-old launched the “apparently unprovoked” attack on August 25 last year, the second day of the world-famous celebration of music and dance.

He approached the 41-year-old victim, who was “out enjoying himself” and waiting for friends just off the main parade route in St Charles Square, and asked him where he was from.

After the victim told him he was from Grenada, an altercation began and Waldron punched the man in the jaw, pulled a knife from his pocket and then began stabbing him in the head.

Waldron jabbed the victim around the right eye three times, luckily

missing the eye itself but causing deep lacerations as well as a broken jaw.

A startled woman who witnessed the vicious attack alerted two nearby police officers, who raced to the victim’s rescue.

When the officers arrived, Waldron attempted to flee through the carnival but was quickly detained.

The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated. Due to complications he was forced to seek further help from a specialist eye hospital but has since made a full recovery.

PC Kendal Moore, from the Notting Hill Carnival Investigation Team, said: “This attack could have had been far worse had it not been for a member of the public who intervened and alerted police officers.

“With this year's Notting Hill Carnival only weeks away, I hope this sends a clear message that knives will not be tolerated and anyone found to be carrying a knife will be arrested.

Waldron now has fourteen years in prison to think about the consequences of his actions.”

POLICE HAVE launched an investigation after a man was captured on video jumping down onto train tracks in Peckham - it is thought to retrieve his phone.

The man can be seen looking for the dropped mobile in footage filmed by an onlooker before he hops on to the tracks, to the horror of bystanders at Peckham Rye station on July 4.

A series of expletives can be heard on the video, obtained by the Evening Standard, as eye witnesses look on in disbelief at the dangerous deed.

The British Transport Police (BTP) are now looking into the incident and have issued a warning to other commuters.

“I would like to remind members of the public that the railway line is a hazardous place. I cannot overstate just how dangerous trespassing on the railway is. Trains can approach quietly and, if you are trespassing, often when you do hear an approaching train it can be too late to move out of the way,” said a BTP spokesperson.

A TEAM of volunteers has offered to help reconstruct a slice of local history after a replica of one of the Queen’s wedding cakes was trashed by vandals last month.

The multi-tiered icing sugar model of a towering cake made by Bermondsey firm Peek Frean & Co for Princess Elizabeth’s 1947 marriage to Prince Philip was destroyed as hooligans covered the inside of Rotherhithe’s historic Pumphouse, one of the area’s last remnants from its proud docking heritage, with graffiti and stripped it of its internal wiring.

The ornate cake, which remained housed in the building long after the Peek Frean Museum vacated as it was deemed too fragile to move, was turned upside down and covered in red paint.

In the last week what’s left of the cake and its display case have been carefully removed and placed in a safe place, awaiting a visit from the British Sugarcraft Guild who will hopefully be able, faithfully to recreate the model.

A MARKET trader who was busted hiding thousands of fake fags in egg and sanitary product boxes has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Abdullah Al-Taaei, of Kennington, was put under surveillance after the council received an anonymous tip off about his stall on East Street market.

In March last year the borough’s trading standards team clocked the 48year-old leaving a flat in SE1 and heading to the market with a rucksack and shopping bag trolley. CCTV footage on East Street showed these contained cigarettes and tobacco which he appeared to sell.

Police raided the flat and found 77,000 fake branded cigarettes including Mayfair, Marlboro and Palace, as well as the illegal brand Jin Ling produced solely for smuggling.

Al-Taaei was then arrested at the market, where he was discovered with more than 5,000 cigarettes in his rucksack and trolley, as well as rolling tobacco.

After denying any knowledge of the tobacco in the flat or any connection to the fake fags being sold on the stall, Al-Taaei was due to stand trial on July 6.

KING’S HOSPITAL Trust has circulated a memo to its staff asking where they can make cutbacks, as it revealed £86million of savings were needed in this financial year just to balance the books.

The King’s College Hospital Trust document describes last year’s deficit of £47million as “the greatest financial challenge the Trust has ever faced,” which will have “a huge impact” on the services it can offer.

Until recently the Trust had a small surplus at the end of each year, but since it took over the Princess Royal hospitals in Orpington and Bromley from the failing South London Hospital Trust (SLHT) in 2013 it has been battling escalating PFI debts and crippling agency staff bills.

The deficit would have been a staggering £114million last year were it not for a series of one-off payments for various services which the hospital received. These payments are not expected to be received this year.

King’s has already identified £50million of savings it can make this year by reducing the number of agency staff it employs and “re-negotiating contracts to get better value for money” but in order to make ends meet it is asking its staff “do you really need to fill a vacancy in your team?” as well as suggesting different teams share equipment. It’s now looking to identify £36m more in savings, in an effort to address its predicted £86m shortfall.

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, said she was “extremely concerned” by the sheer scale of the cuts required which “could have a very serious impact on the services that the hospital is able to provide. I would be particularly concerned to see any wards closed,” she said.

Ms Hayes is now calling on the government to write a cheque to King’s

King’s has confirmed there are no current plans for staff redundancies or a general freeze on recruitment but acknowledged staff vacancies would not automatically be filled as they arose, but would instead be scrutinised to see if the post was “essential” before a decision to recruit or not was taken.

“As with many NHS organisations across the country, we have faced increased pressure on the Emergency Departments at our two acute hospitals.

This, coupled with difficulties repatriating and discharging patients, has put additional pressure on our finances,” said a spokesperson from King’s, who added that nursing agency fees to fill vacancies at a heavily understaffed Princess Royal was also a large part of the problem. “Patient safety is our number one priority and we continue to recruit permanent staff to these positions,” they added.

The Unite union representative at the hospital, Frank Wood, said while he was pleased no redundancies had yet been proposed, the threat of further cuts “hangs over the staff like a dark cloud.”

“The government need to step in and write off this debt now as the lengthy delay only further undermines the ability of King’s staff to maintain a safe and high quality service,” he added.

In March health regulator Monitor launched a formal investigation into how the government could best support King’s after it took on the Princess Royal, which it said was clearly a “challenge much greater than originally anticipated.”

A NEW design for Peckham Rye station square has been revealed after previous proposals went off the rails last year.

“It is a significant missed opportunity.

And it would be seriously disingenuous for the council or the architects to encourage anyone to think that this is a serious collaborative process,” she said.

Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Mark Williams, said he had very positive feedback from people at the meeting.

“I’m really excited to see the plans to create a new square outside Peckham Rye station, but more importantly it seems local residents are really pleased with them too,” he said.

Peckham girl Winnie turns 105 and she still sings in her local choir!

A PECKHAM woman who still sings in her church choir celebrated her 105th birthday this week with a knees up at her care home.

Southwark Mayor, Dora Dixon-Fyle helped Winnie Williams blow out her candle and open her card from the Queen and telegram from The Right

Winnie grew up in south London and went to Rockingham Road elementary school during the First World War years. She later moved to live with her mother at Leytonstone House Hospital, where she worked as a laundry assistant until she retired, returning to Southwark in 1974.

The centenarian said the secret to

her long life was “enjoying life and making myself happy.”

Winnie said she very much enjoyed her party on Monday afternoon at Greenhive care home in Brayards Road Peckham, especially her favourite chocolate cake which had been prepared on site.

Greenhive manager Connie Oppong MBE described Winnie as “a lovely person” who still enjoys singing in the church choir.

The proposal, including a tropical roof garden and large rusted metal planters, were divulged at a community meeting last week to mixed reviews.

The design, by Landholt and Brown Architects, will open up the front of the historic station by removing the arcade which currently houses TSB bank, Jenny’s café and several small businesses.

Barry Jenkins, of Barry’s Café next to the station, said the designs were “on the right track” but remains concerned at who will maintain the large zig-zag shape planters in the new square. “The devil is in the detail,” he said, “You’ve only got to look at how Southwark maintains everything now.”

Derek Kinrade, of the Peckham Society, said he was “delighted” to see an open square, harking back to the station’s original 1800s surroundings.

“But I’m distinctly worried it looks as though it’s going to be filled up with clutter,” said Derek, referring to the planters, stalls and seats planned for the square. Mickey Smith, who resurrected the now thriving Bussey Building said it was a “good plan” but hoped there would be scope for more than the one bar currently proposed in the design.

“That’s what makes a great atmosphere when you arrive and makes you feel safe,” said Mickey, who is still planning to open a new Hollywood golden-era inspired cocktail lounge in the top floor of the doomed arcade building.

Resident of nearby Highshore Road, Michelle Male Shaw, who recently received a standing ovation for fighting to protect Rye Lane from overdevelopment, said she was “really disappointed” by the plans as she was hoping to see a more simplistic design dotted with trees. “I wanted it to be more open and less restrictive,” said Michelle, who also wanted to see the murals around Peckham incorporated into the design to reflect the colourful diversity of the area.

“That to me is Peckham,” she said. “This reminds me more of Canary Wharf.”

Jogger who had heart attack aged just 34 set to run again after making startling recovery

A MAN who collapsed after a run when his heart stopped beating for fifteen minutes is making a miraculous return to the sport this weekend, this time with a defibrillator strapped to his chest.

Neil Cole was a fit 34-year-old when he blacked out while queuing up to get his time at Hilly Fields park run on New Year’s Day. A blocked artery caused his heart to stop beating, plunging Neil into full cardiac arrest for fifteen minutes.

In a stroke of luck, which saved his life, among the other runners there that day were two doctors and a lifeguard who started CPR immediately and carried on until the ambulance arrived.

Neil, of Cornflower Terrace in Dulwich, was rushed to King’s College Hospital, where they unblocked his artery and reinforced its lining to make sure it remained clear.

As his family and girlfriend waited anxiously at his bedside they were informed that due to the amount of time his heart had stopped beating, if he did survive, there was a significant chance he would have brain damage.

By January 8 Neil was remarkably awake and fully responsive. He had suffered some short term memory loss rendering December last year a blur and he was disoriented from sedation, which was apparent when he asked his girlfriend how he could escape the video game he was stuck inside.

After 23 days in hospital Neil made a startling full recovery and after months of gradually building up his strength he is now preparing to do a 5km run this Saturday – his first since his collapse.

“I’m taking the positives from it. I know how lucky I am to have survived it,” said Neil, who has since had a

matchbox-sized defibrillator (the paddles they pump people’s chests with in hospital dramas) fitted which would give his heart a shock if it ever went into an irregular rhythm again.

This is a precaution taken by the hospital because no one fully understands why his artery became blocked in the first place. As a young man who regularly exercised and didn’t smoke, drink or take drugs, his condition has stumped medical professionals.

As the Dulwich Hamlet fan prepares to become a running man once again (with a possible half marathon on the horizon if Saturday goes well), Neil is urging everyone to get trained in CPR as he says he would be dead were it not for his fellow park-runners and their lifesaving actions.

“It’s a life and death scenario. It’s not that difficult but not that many people know how to do it. If my story makes one person decide to do CPR then I’ll have done something important,” he said.

Stephen joined the Royal Norfolk Regiment 6th Battalion in 1933

SEVENTY YEARS ago today a postman from Rotherhithe being held as a prisoner of war watched a cloud of smoke mushroom into the sky as the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima.

“I saw it,” Stephen Carr told News reporter Will Pavia the year before he died, as he exclusively revealed the horrors he had seen behind enemy lines, which he had previously kept from his friends and family.

To mark Victory over Japan day next week, his family has asked us to share his remarkable story once more to remind us of the sacrifices made by soldiers like Stephen.

In August 1945 Stephen was on a mountainside in Japan collecting wood. “I say to the fella I was with: ‘Look at that.’ A great cloud. That was the bomb.”

He was a hundred miles from Hiroshima. “Everything went quiet after that,” he said. “All the guards disappeared.”

By that time the Norfolkborn soldier had survived three years of the most brutal Japanese prisons and the Thai ‘death railway’.

“I put it down to the fact that I am only a small fella,” said Stephen. “It was the big lads that died first. Mine was only a small stomach. And I resolved not to think about home at the beginning when I was first captured. I thought, this is no good. I have got to watch my own. I received a letter from my wife in 1944. It was posted some time in 1942. It didn’t say much because they weren’t allowed to say much, but I was glad because then I knew she was alright, see.”

Gun, covering the track which led to the village. “The signal trench was just a few yards behind me. I heard them say: ‘At four o’clock we will surrender.’”

Stephen joined the Territorial Army in 1933 and was shipped out to Singapore in 1941 to reinforce the island base at the bottom of the Malay peninsula, regarded by military chiefs as an ‘impregnable bastion ’vital to British interests.

As Stephen and his comrades were sailing to their post, Japanese High Command ordered the invasion of Thailand, Malaya and the Philippines, while simultaneously launching a strike on the American fleet stationed at Pearl Harbour.

British Army chiefs still assumed the ‘little men’ army would be no match for the British bulldog as they reinforced their sea-facing defences.

But sixty-five thousand battle-hardy Japanese troops took them by surprise when they advanced through the swamps and jungle of Malaya towards Singapore, building a ruthless reputation as they went.

They travelled on stolen bicycles, killed captured wounded and slaughtered those who surrendered.

Two of Britain’s leading warships were sent north to meet the invasion – both were sunk.

Ninety thousand allied troops, many of whom had not seen battle before, were faced with an army of trained killers who had been exhorted to “think of yourselves as an avenger coming face to face at last with his father’s murderer. Here is a man whose death will lighten your heart.”

Stephen arrived in Singapore on January 13 1942 and was immediately confronted with the brutal reality of war as a battle-weary soldier from the Argyle and Scottish Highlanders took a seat beside him in the Officer’s Mess.

As he handed the filthy bloodied soldier a beer, Stephen’s name was called out by the Sergeant Major, ordering him to gather up fifty rounds of ammunition.

As a ‘spare man’ in the battalion, Stephen could be employed as a range taker, a Vickers Machine Gunner or a battalion runner, carrying messages from camp to camp.

“We drove straight across the causeway into Malaya ninety miles up to a place called Yong Ping. That was where the Japanese were.”

Word came of a Japanese attack on D company on a nearby hilltop. A group of Indian soldiers were sent in to assist, but an hour later they returned carrying their dead commanding officer.

Everyone was ordered to fall back but the next morning the convoy was ambushed and split up. Stephen was sent to run a message to the other half of the fleeing troops telling them of a patrol boat on route to pick up the wounded.

“I was running on a track by a river and on the way back I got sniped at but I never got hit.”

He was then sent in a group of five to attack the enemy. Most were killed or

wounded and Stephen narrowly escaped death when he got out of a truck just before it was hit by a mortar.

The order came to head for the coast so the remaining soldiers made for the jungle, wading through the swamps before they were picked up by a Malay patrol boat.

“I was caked with mud. A British soldier was handing out half a cup of rum and corned beef sandwich on the deck. I took mine up and lay by the chimney stack on my back. I must’ve gone right off because I didn’t wake up till we got to Singapore. When I opened my eyes there were two military police. One had his boot in my ribs. I said ‘What’s the matter?’ The other said: ‘He’s not dead.’ My legs were so caked in mud they had to carry me off.”

As the Japanese stormed the causeway, Churchill issued a chilling order to his generals: “There must be no thought of sparing the troops or population. Commanders and senior officers should die with their troops.

Stephen was on patrol with Nepalese Ghurkas, covering the approach to the village when word came of surrender.

“I felt disappointment and relief in a way,” he said. “At everything being

quiet. They wanted us to clean all the weapons but we just slung them in a heap. I said to the Sergeant Major: ‘I haven’t got to clean this machine gun have I?’ He said: ‘Yes of course.’ When he left I put a bit of sand in all the working parts, went to a pond and slung it in there.”

Stephen was one of 100,000 men taken prisoner at Changi Prison in the north east of Singapore.

“That was when I saw the first Japanese. A single Japanese standing by the side of the road watching us.”

Stephen was sent to Thailand with 150 others, where they were put to work building a railway to Burma on the Indian border.

“I was in a hammer gang. The one that pinned the rail to the sleepers. We were getting practically no food. A cupful of rice a day and what leaves and things we could scavenge from the jungle. Every twenty to twenty-five miles we moved camp.”

“Some of the guards were

reasonable,” said Stephen. “Some you could talk to in broken English and Japanese. Some of them used to give you a cigarette and others would knock it out of your hand.”

“Once we was spiking the rails down.

The rain was coming down in buckets and a couple of times I missed my strike, the spike flew and hit me in the leg. Of course I swore. A Japanese sergeant came up to me and whacked me across the back with a sword stick they carried. With that he took me up to where he had a tea brewed up and made me hold a pretty heavy stone over my head and put a bamboo stick between my knees. I stood there like that for half an hour. A Japanese officer came along and said: ‘What have you done wrong?’ I told him. The sergeant said: ‘Yes he was a lazy boy’. The officer told me to put it down and go and make myself some tea. As I walked away he was giving the sergeant a right going over.”

“Once we had to go to a Tamil camp where they were lying around dead and chuck them in the lime pits and cover them. That was one of the chores. I only had to do it once as luck would have it. If our men got cholera they were taken out the edge of the jungle and buried there.”

“That was the only time I saw respect from the Japanese. If they saw one of our chaps buried they would let us use a Union Jack. And if one of the officers was coming past they would salute.”

In 1942 Stephen’s hammer crew caught up with the men charged with digging through and exploding chunks of the unstable hillside to make way for the new rails to be laid. ‘Hellfire Pass’ was so called because the prisoners worked eighteen-hour shifts by torchlight and wood fires, which looked from above like the jaws of hell.

“They went round the hospitals and ordered most of them out. Carried them out on the stretchers, they had to bore holes for the dynamite. More of them came back dead.”

Out of 1,000 PoWs who started work on the pass in April 1943, just 100 were alive when it was finished that August.

Stephen was now severely underweight at a skeletal six stone and was one of just 32 of his company who had survived as the allied forces closed the net on the Japanese.

He was moved to the infamous Mitsushima mountain camp. In the trials that followed the Japanese surrender, more guards from

Mitsushima were convicted and executed than from any other prison.

The men were put to work constructing a hydro-electric dam, dodging perilous rock-falls which collapsed entire villages, when they saw that memorable cloud mushroom on the horizon.

“We didn’t know what it was of course,” said Stephen. “Then the guards disappeared. A day or two later one of the Japanese civilian guards threw a paper over the wall. A sergeant from the RAF could read Japanese. He read they had dropped the bomb.”

Ten days later, Stephen was on a train

passing the devastated city. “It was flattened,” he said. “Absolutely flattened except for one or two chimney stacks and the train tracks we were on. Looking out the window you could see all the devastation.”

A long journey home led him finally to his family, but after so long without

them, training his mind not to think of them, he found he had nothing to say.

“Just ‘hello’, that sort of thing and that was it. They didn’t ask, so I didn’t tell,” said Stephen.

It was only at work in Borough post office that he was surrounded by other PoWs who all swapped stories.

Speaking to the News this week, his daughter Linda, said her dad was a “quiet and private man” who never spoke to the family about his ordeal.

“I'm so glad Dad got to tell his story through your newspaper in 2004 (a year before he died aged 89 from ill health) and again this year for the 70th anniversary of VJ day.”

HUNDREDS OF people took part in an “incredibly positive” fun day at the Silverlock Estate last weekend.

With music, stilt-walkers, facepainters, magicians and a bouncy castle, the day was a great success for young and old residents alike.

Silverlock TRA Chair David Eyles said: “Saturday was really good, really fun. It was an incredibly positive event and really showed the unity of the community.

“It was so nice to see great-greatgrandparents enjoying themselves as much as the little ones running about.”

He added that it was “very beneficial” to see the police joining in the fun with the residents.

SOUTHWARK HAS higher rates of ‘importing’ malaria into the country than anywhere else in the UK.

With a small number of UK deaths caused by the tropical disease, a London health boss has urged anyone in the

borough preparing to holiday abroad to get the proper preventive medication.

Out of the 291 cases reported across south east London last year, over a third, 96, were living in Southwark.

Most cases of imported malaria are in people of Black African ethnicity, according to Public Health England (PHE), which is concerned some people who were born in countries where the

“Malaria is a preventable disease, so it’s concerning to see almost 300 people with the disease in south east London last year,” said Dr Rachel Heathcock, PHE London’s local director of health protection.

“It is important for people to be aware of the risks when visiting family or friends in malaria affected regions. This is a potentially life-threatening disease but can be prevented by taking anti-malarial medication.”

Malaria is contracted by mosquito bites, so those infected by the disease returning to the UK pose no risk to the Southwark population.

RESIDENTS HAVE voiced their concerns after a cost-cutting reshuffle of Southwark Council’s senior management positions took place earlier this month without public consultation.

The changes included the deletion of the Head of Major Works title, which dealt with all major refurbishment projects taking place in the borough’s estates. The job will now be subsumed into another council officer’s role.

New positions have been introduced as the council attempts to streamline its services due to hefty government cuts to local spending - it estimates these measures will save £1m a year.

Cris Claridge, chair of the Southwark Group of Tenants’ Organisation, told the News that residents felt like they were “not even an afterthought” to the council.

She said: “We are the recipients of the service and we should have been informed. It’s like we’re not even an afterthought. We asked them to defer the decision until we’d been consulted but it didn’t happen. Our main concern is the total lack of consultation. There was none at all.

We actually only found out that this was taking place after hearing about it through the grapevine.”

Councillor Anood AlSamerai, leader of Southwark Lib Dems, was

concerned that “very generous” redundancy packages would negate any savings made due to the changes.

She said: “We know savings need to be made but when the council can’t even get basic repairs done, how are they going to cope with less people doing more work?

“I know that some of the senior officers are getting very generous redundancy packages, which makes me wonder how much will really be saved?”

A spokesperson for the council confirmed that the re-shuffle would result in savings of £1m per year, but conceded that this did not factor in redundancy payments. She also added that public consultation was not common practice in these situations unless the services themselves were to change.

Leader of the Council Peter John said: “The council has to make significant savings because of continued government cuts, but we have been very clear that our priority is protecting the delivery of frontline services. We know that these services are of crucial importance to Southwark residents, which is why despite the very difficult financial challenges the council faces we will seek to minimise any reductions to front-line staff.

“The new structure will allow the council to carry on delivering excellent services to residents and to modernise our services, which will help make the additional savings that will be needed in future.”

ROTHERHITHE

Rotherhithe’s history rebuilt - in Lego ROTHERHITHE’S LONG docking history became a little more colourful last week when a huge ship was built from Lego in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.

The three-metre long model was constructed by dozens of Lego-loving Southwark children last Wednesday and Thursday.

While it may not be sea-worthy, it certainly is worth seeing during its monthlong stay in the shopping centre.

Residents are also being urged to submit their suggestions for the ship’s name, with the winner receiving a hamper of Lego toys.

A FORMER Sunday school teacher died from an accidental overdose, a coroner concluded last week.

Mystery surrounded the death of 48-year-old Debbie Watts after she fell unconscious in her flat in Chandler Way, Peckham on May 29.

At Southwark Coroner’s Court on Thursday last week, Assistant Coroner Lorna Taglianvini concluded that Debbie had died from an unintentional drug overdose involving a cocktail of prescription medications.

Speaking to the News, Ms Tagliavini added that there was no indication Debbie had intended to harm herself or take her own life.

Booze tag scheme to be rolled out across country after Southwark trial

AN ELECTRONIC tag scheme to put lager louts either on the wagon or in the slammer has been such a success in Southwark it is now being rolled out across the country.

A year-long trial saw over a hundred nuisance binge-drink offenders fitted with the new ‘booze bracelets’ in this borough, Lambeth, Croydon and Sutton.

In the last year, fourteen people in Southwark have been slapped with alcohol abstinence monitoring requirements' banning them from drinking for up to 120 days at a time.

Their abstinence was monitored by an electronic tag which tested for alcohol levels in their sweat every 30 minutes.

To date, none of Southwark’s ‘alcoffenders’, brought on charges including assault, driving under the influence and criminal damage, have breached their orders – a compliance rate significantly better than with traditional community orders, according to the Mayor’s office.

The Ministry of Justice now says it will expand the scheme nationwide.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “It’s now time to bring this exciting new crime fighting technology to the rest of the capital, and help remove the scourge of alcohol-fuelled criminal behaviour from all of London’s streets.”

Jamie Bromfield, 49, told the News after her death that he suspected she may have taken too many prescription drugs to help relieve the tooth ache she was suffering from.

Although Debbie was addicted to heroin for twenty years she had been clean for the last fifteen years.

Thanks to hundreds of pounds donated by both friends and strangers, Debbie’s long-term partner, Jamie Bromfield, 47, was able to arrange a funeral service at Honor Oak Crematorium at the end of last month.

Debbie’s neighbour, Lucy Cope, who has known her for years said after her death it was like a light had gone out in our street. She said: “She was a lovely, free-spirited lady and she’ll be sadly missed by all of us. The whole neighbourhood is in shock.”

City worker dies in ten storey plunge

BERMONDSEY: A 23-year-old city worker died last week after falling ten storeys from his workplace rooftop near London Bridge.

Josh Jones was pronounced dead at the scene after falling to the pavement in the More London business complex, where he worked as a graduate associate at PwC. The incident took place at around 7.45pm on Thursday, when the area was packed with workers and tourists.

The University of Surrey graduate was described as a “great friend” by former teammates on the university’s hockey team, where he acted as the third team captain.

A statement from the club said: “With great sadness we say goodbye to former captain Josh Jones. A team mate to some. A great friend to many more. Gone too soon but will never be forgotten.”

Flowers, cards and football shirts were left at the scene of the incident.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called to More London Riverside, London Bridge, junction with Tooley Street at 7.45pm on Thursday July 30 following reports of a man fallen.”

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

HIV testing in A&E A PROACTIVE new approach to HIV screening means that patients in the Emergency Department (A&E) at St Thomas’ Hospital are being tested for HIV as part of routine blood tests.

Every patient over the age of 16 who is already having their blood tested will have an HIV test at the same time, unless they choose to opt out. The move will lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

The Emergency Department at St Thomas’ is one of the busiest in the country. It is expected that routine HIV testing will identify more than 150 additional cases of patients with HIV each year.

Dr Nick Larbalestier, consultant physician and clinical lead for HIV at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “Normalising HIV testing will undoubtedly save lives. Just as we use blood tests to check for other medical conditions such as diabetes, we know that routine testing for HIV will identify undiagnosed cases.

“People with HIV are able to live long and healthy lives, but this depends on them being diagnosed promptly and receiving the specialist treatment they need. This is why it’s so important to increase detection rates.”

An estimated 107,800 people are living with HIV in the UK and

of these 24% are undiagnosed. If people do not realise they have HIV they can unknowingly transmit it to others.

The prevalence of HIV in the area of south London served by Guy’s and St Thomas’ is the

highest in the UK, with approximately 10 out of every 1,000 residents having the infection. The national prevalence rate is estimated to be around three out of every 1,000 people.

HIV is a treatable medical condition and, by increasing the detection of undiagnosed cases, Guy’s and St Thomas’ can ensure that patients receive care and treatment from the Trust’s dedicated team of HIV specialists.

THE REFURBISHMENT of Guy’s Tower, the tallest hospital building in the world, was highly commended in the 2degrees Champions Awards in July. The awards recognise the most innovative and sustainable projects in the UK.

Dr Luigi Gnudi, diabetes consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “Insulin treatment gave hope to patients with diabetes where previously there was very little that could be done for them.

“In the 90 years since that initial success at Guy’s in 1925, the use of insulin has transformed the treatment provided to our patients and helped them to enjoy long and healthy lives.”

Guy’s Hospital was involved in another key insulin development in the 1970s when a research team invented the insulin pump. These small battery-operated devices are attached to the patient’s body and

deliver insulin via a catheter placed under the skin.

Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high because their body cannot use it properly.

Today there are 3.3 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and it is estimated that around 400,000 of them use insulin regularly.

Before the development of insulin treatment, people with diabetes faced immense suffering and vastly reduced life expectancies. Most would only live one or two years after developing the condition.

When it was established that injecting insulin would drop the patient’s blood sugar levels to near normal, a diagnosis of diabetes gradually changed from being a death sentence to becoming a condition that could be successfully managed.

Steve McGuire, Director of Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ inhouse infrastructure provider, says: “I feel an enormous sense of pride at what we’ve achieved here.

We’ve secured the future of the Tower, a building that will benefit our patients, clinical colleagues and London for the next generation.”

The refurbishment involved replacing every window, repairing damaged concrete, and applying bespoke aluminium cladding to the outside of the 34-storey building.

Council preparing to support any youngsters who may need help if Kids Company does close its doors

KIDS COMPANY, a Southwark charity working with over 30,000 children across the country, was threatened with closure yesterday, just one week after receiving £3million of government funding.

The organisation, founded in Camberwell in the 1990s by the charismatic Camila Batmanghelidjh, has been dragged through the media mud in the last month as allegations of poor financial management and a withdrawal of £5million of annual government funding emerged on BBC’s Newsnight.

Government ministers threatened to withhold a £3million one-off payment to help the charity “downsize” if Ms Batmanghelidjh was not replaced with a new leader.

Council ‘must do more’ on cancer

SOUTHWARK: A health charity has urged Southwark Council to do more to tackle prostate cancer as new data reveals 235 men are living with the potentially fatal illness in the borough.

The figures from Public Health England show that black men are twice as likely to get prostate cancer and die from it as white men. The charity, BME Cancer Communities, is now urging Southwark to do more to raise awareness, as they say the disease is not in the borough’s local healthcare strategy.

Southwark’s cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure said: "Because prostate cancer does disproportionately affect some groups in Southwark, such as black men, the NHS, Public Health England (PHE) and the council have been doing a great deal to raise awareness of this issue. We have been working with local community and faith groups to share information about prostate cancer, and run local events with world athletics champions Colin Jackson and Mark Foster who are champions for this important issue. We would encourage people to visit their GP if they have any concerns about prostrate cancer as prompt treatment saves lives."

Southwark Council has been in emergency talks with the Department for Education and other local authorities to prepare for the closure of Kids Company. A spokesperson said: “Although Southwark doesn't refer any children to the charity, some will have sought out their services.

We are ready to support any vulnerable children and young people in the borough who are affected by the closure of Kids Company."

The charity, which currently supports 36,000 children and adults in London, Bristol and Liverpool and

‘Great Donator’ wins gold at her first Transplant Games DULWICH

A WOMAN who donated her kidney, her eggs and part of her liver to total strangers, won a gold medal at the British Transplant Games on Saturday.

Sue Gianstefani, of East Dulwich became the second person in the country to donate part of her liver to a stranger earlier this year and is possibly the only person in the UK to have made multiple altruistic organ donations.

Accepting organs from a stranger, or an altruistic living donor, was illegal in the UK until 2006 because of concerns that people could be coerced or offered financial incentives to undertake the surgery.

Now it is possible to donate your organs or parts of your organs to total strangers without ever meeting the recipient.

On Saturday Sue took the plunge

and swam a relay race at the British Transplant Games in Gateshead, Newcastle, with three other living donors and they won a gold medal with a time of three minutes and seven seconds.

“It was just amazing,” said Sue, 47.

“It was a really great experience and emotional for everybody,” added Sue who had her medal presented by a woman whose daughter had died and had her organs donated.

The sporting competition was set up in 1978 to promote transplantation and get more people on the NHS Organ Donation Register.

This year was the first year living donors have been officially invited to take part and Sue hopes awareness of altruistic donation will be now increase as a result.

“For the first time I felt part of the British Transplant Games ‘family’. It was very special to be able to be involved and I'm very thankful for that opportunity,” said Sue.

Company is cooperating fully with the police to assist the investigation into what it understands to be historical but serious allegations but has no further substantive information to date.”

Police seize stun gun and drugs

ROTHERHITHE: A stun gun and drugs were seized by police after searching a car and property last weekend.

At around 3pm last Saturday, police on patrol stopped a vehicle in Jamaica Road. Police found cash, drug paraphernalia and what is thought to be GHB. Searches were then carried out at a property in Isambard Place, Rotherhithe. Police found a stun gun, a “quantity of drugs” and further drugs paraphernalia. A man was arrested for money laundering, possession of class C drugs, possession of a firearm, possession with intent to supply class A and C drugs and being concerned in the production of class C drugs.

SOUTHWARK: Twenty three spaces have this year been given the prestigious Green Flag Award, making Southwark the second greenest borough in England.

Local residents excel on Routes Into Construction work placements

TWO LOCAL Bermondsey boys have been offered an invaluable work experience opportunity with national housing and regeneration specialist, Keepmoat, through Construction Youth Trust.

Alfie Delaney and Brandon Goodyear approached the Trust keen to take part in the Greater London Joint Initiative Programme with London Youth and CITB: Routes into Construction. The programme, which brings together a number of construction employers committed to providing practical work experience, enables local young people to enhance their employment prospects and make more informed career choices.

Last week, Keepmoat’s community impact manager, Patrick Warren, approached Construction Youth Trust with a placement opportunity to work on the refurbishment of a

TRA hall on Slippers Lane housing estate in Bermondsey. Alfie, 19, who is a resident of the estate and has achieved Carpentry Level 2 course at Lewisham Southwark College, contacted Construction Youth Trust last Monday, looking for more experience. He was placed on a two week placement with Keepmoat the very next day.

He commented: “I’ve just left college, and I’m looking for an apprenticeship. I saw the Construction Youth Trust banner, and rang the number – I met Pat the same afternoon, and was working on site for Keepmoat the following day! Now Keepmoat are keeping me in mind for apprenticeship opportunities. I’m really happy with the way the Trust has helped me.”

Brandon, 18, also lives locally and is a recent Budding Builders graduate joined the programme the same week. Their two week

placement consists of:

• Painting and decorating - 80% of the work • Bathroom fit out • General labouring

The first stage of the placement (P&D) is now complete and there will be a short break before the second stage. Both Brandon and

Alfie have excelled on the course, with Pat Warren committing to recommend the two for Keepmoat’s apprenticeship programme.

He added: “Both Alfie and Brandon have shown great enthusiasm and real skill in the short time that they’ve been with us. We hope to help them progress their careers in what is very much an under-resourced, but highly-valued industry.”

Construction Youth Trust Chairman Andy Wates and Executive Director Christine Townley visited the placement on Friday and were impressed by what they saw, and consider the placements a great success for Routes Into Construction.

Christine commented: “We are delighted to have the support of Keepmoat in giving Brandon and Alfie a real start by helping them understand what a career in construction involves and by providing them with new and improved skills. Construction Youth Trust welcomes working with the industry to support talented young people to get a taste of construction and help them into the industry.”

This is the start of what the Trust hopes to be a very exciting relationship with Keepmoat.

Christine plans to meet with Keepmoat’s CEO Dave Sheridan to discuss how Construction Youth Trust and Keepmoat can continue to work together to help local young people into training and employment in the construction industry.

I have been woken at 5.55am every morning this week, despite having triple glazing, as Heathrow’s flight-path was directed over Southwark. Since Heathrow started using central London for its approach routes in the 1990s, the number of planes passing over Southwark has soared to a horrendous 165,000 planes every year. A plane flies over us every 2 minutes!

And now the rich corporate aviation lobbyists have persuaded the Airports Commission to massively expand Heathrow. This would increase the number of flights to over 700,000. There would be a flight over Southwark every minute, with noise between 57-60 decibels!

Research has shown persistent aircraft noise can lead to stress and heart disease.

Heathrow is a major source of transport pollution in London, which is killing nearly 10,000 Londoners every year. Over a hundred thousand more live with awful cancers and respiratory diseases.

Heathrow’s expansion would lead to a massive increase in CO2 emissions, trashing the UK’s carbon budget and increasing the likelihood that north Southwark will be flooded by rising sealevels in future generations.

So what was Harman’s reaction to The Airports Commission recommending the expansion of Heathrow? Not content with, for the second time in her career, to be attacking benefits for poorer children, she again attacked Cameron from the right. In parliament, she enthusiastically supported the airport lobbyists. Using her privileged position as temporary Labour party leader, she trashed the Tories for not immediately giving the go-ahead for Heathrow expansion. Not one of our local MPs stood up against welfare reform

YOU REPORTED in ‘Southwark News’ (23 July) that all three Southwark Labour MPs abstained on the second reading vote of the Conservative government’s Welfare Reform and Work Bill in the House of Commons on 13 July.

Forty-eight Labour MPs voted against the bill as did all Scottish and Welsh Nationalists, the Democratic Unionists and all Liberal Democrat MPs. But not one of our three local Labour MPs stood up to the government on proposals which will most directly hit many Southwark residents.

What is going on?

I don’t know about the new Labour MP for Dulwich, but I know that the new Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark regularly made a big deal at election meetings that he would never follow his party’s whip if the interests of his constituents meant he should vote differently. Within the first three months, he has clearly gone back on his promise in the most public of ways. The two new Southwark Labour MPs clearly have put following their leader first.

I know that during the last parliament when Liberal Democrats were in government with our Conservative opponents, I and my colleagues had to support or abstain on votes where we would have voted differently if there was no coalition. When Conservatives were in government before and were doing things against local peoples’ interests, I regularly opposed them and voted against them. As I did when the Labour government acted against our

interests- for example by taking us into war in Iraq.

But Labour is not in government.

Labour did not win the general election. Labour is meant to be the official opposition. Yet, in one of its first big tests our three Labour MPs did not oppose the Tories. All Liberal Democrat MPs and many other MPs did. I cannot believe for a moment that people who voted Labour in Southwark in May expected our Labour MPs not to be opposing by Tories by July. Is this what they meant by standing up for Southwark residents who will struggle more to make ends meet because of the Tory majority government?

Council housing and policy is a mess SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has got itself in a right mess with terrible deals with developers through out the borough.

It has lost social housing and has a housing policy that is wrong.

The aim is to build 11,000 homes over 30 years but now it has realised that when the building goes on the right to buy will start on those already built so would lose anything over 10% of the 11,000 - leaving around 10,000 to remain as council properties at the end of 30 years.

Can anyone really expect Southwark Council to run this new company professionally when it comes up with the terrible Savill's report, in which over 30 years the council could lose 4,000 so called worthless homes, with another 10,000 in danger with the ‘right to buy’ (300 sales a year) and the selling off of high priced homes which will be 1,000 over

the 30 year period. Total loss of social housing rented homes could reach 25,000 with the 1,000 already lost. So even if this property company works that is still a total loss over 30 years of 14,000 rented homes. That will mean more leaseholders than tenants at the end - is this really the best Southwark Council has to offer?

It’s good for us that police wear cameras

I WAS pleased to hear Boris' announcement that the majority of our Met Officers on the beat will be getting bodyworn cameras within the next year.

This is good news for Londoners, not only making our communities safer places to live, but also allowing local people to hold the police to account.

I hope that the Metropolitan Police will draw up workable rules that tell officers when they need to have that camera switched on, so that as local residents we can still have the confidence to approach our local neighbourhood bobby for a private conversation when we want.

Lady Doreen Lawrence, whose son Stephen was murdered in a racist attack in 1993, has suggested that these cameras should be switched on during every stop-andsearch to ensure they are conducted appropriately.

Meanwhile these cameras could result in huge savings in police and court time. If they work well and are not seen as a threat, over time we may be able to roll them out to other frontline workers - such as transport and health workers - who we rely on to keep London safe and moving.

FCOM (THE regulator for the communications industry) estimates that a broadband speed of 10Mbit/s is necessary to benefit from today’s popular online services, such as on-demand video.

However, 8% of UK households cannot currently access those speeds. And residents of SE16 will know that, in fact access to anything approaching those speeds is impossible for most of Rotherhithe – it’s a ‘whitespot’ of slow Broadband access and has needed an upgrade of its connectivity infrastructure – new cabling and booster boxes - for a very long time now. For people who need to work at home it’s a real barrier.

Residents of Rotherhithe will know that since 2013 there’s been a major collaboration between the community, me, our local councillors, Southwark Council and the Canada Water Community Forum to push for Superfast (SF) Broadband to be available in Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks. It’s been a project with numerous meetings, letters and lobyig activities over the last 2 years.

I characterise my work as bothering people and pushing at doors! To everyone who signed a petition, wrote or emailed about it and submitted an expression of interest to BT – thank you.

It’s all helped.

We have just had public confirmation from BT that Openreach have an outline project signed off to roll out Superfast Broadband in Rotherhithe over the coming financial year. By March 2017 Southwark will have a total of 84% coverage (by all providers) and the majority of Rotherhithe will be covered. The details of where the new infrastructure will go is yet to be resolved so I can’t tell anyone when exactly their street will be ‘done’.

However, over the coming weeks those details will be resolved in conversation between BT/Openreach and the council.

Not absolutely everywhere will get coverage by March 2017, but the good news is that the ‘take up’ by customers of the initial roll out affects the case for further installation. So the more Southwark customers take up Superfast Broadband the closer we can get to its universal availability.

If you want SF broadband you will soon have an opportunity to get it – but you must ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) whether they offer SF or fibre services - some don’t – and it could be that when the basic infrastructure is in place you will have to refresh or replace your ISP contract in order to take advantage of the new SF speeds available.

Tommy spends a lot of time gazing into a mirror, here shaped as a prism, perhaps to signify how we all see things differently, or how we see ourselves differently from others.

Tommy is at times lyricist Pete Townsend’s alter ego, at others the guru he once followed, but overall Tommy is a story of how we can knock down our heroes just as quickly as we falsely build them up.

ON A wet and windy morning that was not good for us apprentice mariners, it was with great trepidation that Haydn and I made

I DON’T care how many times you tell me it ain’t real, when I see a car disappear to end the first act of Impossible, or a girl swap places with a man in a water-filled glass box in a split second; or the top half of a lovely assistant on the opposite side of the stage to her bottom half, then it’s magic, writes Michael Holland...

And my little assistant agreed, as he sat there goggle-eyed and amazed throughout the two-hour show.

Impossible begins with a fanfare of flashing lights and pumping music, and pretty much stays at that high level. There are a couple of sojourns into calm, slow, sleight of hand, that is, perhaps, even more amazing.

On a wet and windy morning that was not good for us apprentice mariners, it was with great trepidation that Haydn and I made our way to The National Maritime Museum to participate in the interactive experience of Against Captains Orders, a new collaboration between the museum and Punch-drunk Enrichment.

Having chosen Salvage as our team of choice, leaving the roles of Navigation, Midshipman and Ship Watch to the other

participants, we donned our life jackets and joined the crew of HMS Adventure to be taken on a theatrical journey of excitement into dark and uncharted territory, amidst the museum’s astonishing collection of maritime artefacts.

This production offers an amazing experience of ultimate audience participation for children between the ages of 6-12, that is thrilling, fast-paced, and at times somewhat scary, but oh what fun! We left wanting more.

My son Haydn said the bit about the cow’s lungs was the ‘horriblest’, but he said it with a smile.

Barmy Britain A plain set consisting of clothes on a line depicting the different ages was enough for Neal Foster and Anthony Spargo to bring to life the latest Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain – Part 3, as they exchanged outfits to fit the scene, writes Regeana King...

To begin, fluffy throwovers and a club were used for cave men which led to a song about the Vikings in Grimsby and Derby that involved the audience competing to see who could sing it the loudest. King George and the ‘Magna Farter’ raised a laugh from the children who then had to go on stage to choose clothes for the Tudor Period.

In the show’s 70 minutes they heard a comical song about hating fun and cancelling Christmas by the Puritans, and that if you wore a colour that was above your station in Tudor times you could be locked in the stocks for three days, much to the annoyance of one audience member who was put in them!

LIKE MANY sporting greats, Sir Henry Cotton reached the top due to hard work and practice. Unlike most, he also has a stubborn Dulwich headteacher to thank for his success.

Sir Henry, who joined Alleyn’s School in 1907, only turned to golf seriously after being banned from the cricket team. Outraged at being made to carry sports gear by the school’s prefects, he and some other junior students composed a sarcastic note to ‘Sir’.

It read: “We beg to show our kind appreciation of being allowed the privilege of transporting the cricket bag from Marlow to Dulwich to the detriment of our tender muscles and to the advantage of the select and most condescending.

“We think it is a pity that people who are supposed to be looked up to should so fail in their thoughts for the school and their fellow beings.”

The furious prefects caned Henry’s friends - although Henry himself was let off on medical reasons – and

the four boys were banned from the cricket team by the headmaster, who in true stiff-upper-lip fashion took the prefects’ side.

Rather than mope about, the Crystal Palace Road resident turned his attention from bat to club. The rest, as they say, is history.

After joining a nearby golf club in Honor Oak at the age of 13, he quickly set himself apart from the other players, both young and old.

His first club championship came three years later, and the following year he went professional.

In 1934 he won the Open Championship, one of the biggest events in world golf, ending an eleven-year run by dominant American golfers. This win included a round of 65, which was a record for the next four decades – and also was the inspiration for the classic Dunlop 65 golf ball.

He won the Open Championship again in ’37 – beating the entire US Ryder Cup team in the process – and then once more for a final time in 1948. He also captained the Great British Ryder Cup team between 1947 and 1953.

In between these on-course heroics he even found time to serve King and Country, joining the Royal Air Force during WW2. He split his time between active duty and fundraising, organising a number of charity events with other professionals in aid of the Red

Cross.

He applied to fundraising the same motto he coined for his golf game: “for me, the best is always good enough.” He was later knighted for his hard work during the war, an achievement that gave him as much pride as any golf championship.

After he retired, he turned his mind to teaching golf and designing courses. His greatest off-course achievement is seen by many as the construction of the Championship Golf Course in Penina, Portugal.

He was buried alongside his wife Toots in a small graveyard near his famous course, which was later renamed in his honour. But while he may now lie hundreds of miles from his old home in Crystal Palace Road in Dulwich, his legacy will always owe something to that dramatic afternoon in Alleyn’s School - a fact made clear by his delight at becoming the Alleyn’s Golf Society’s first ever president many years later.

And - while perhaps a bit easily pleased – it is hard not to share his giddiness. We are only in the door at Alcoholic Architecture and already it is like no other bar I have ever been in.

In a city now saturated with gimmicky pop-up bars, this latest project by creatives Bompas and Parr still manages to stand out with a unique draw: the chance to inhale alcoholic vapour through the lungs and eyes directly into the bloodstream.

Along with another friend Sam, the three of us descend into the gloomy depths below Cathedral Street. The bar is located on the site of an ancient monastery and the decoration is suitably gothic: skulls, goblets and – the star of the evening – fog.

Once we negotiate the complexities of putting on a clear anorak in semi-darkness – Adsy struggles to get both arms in the correct holes and ends up wearing it as a sort of shawl – we enter the cloud.

After passing a neon sign advising us to ‘Breathe Responsibly’, we walk tentatively into the room with arms outstretched. The fog is so thick that anyone further than a yard away fades away into the boozy blackness. Adsy quickly wanders off to have, it later transpires, an increasingly frustrating conversation with his own blurry reflection in a mirror.

Sam and I, meanwhile, discover the vents pumping the cocktail mist into the room and stand by it gormlessly, mouths agape like alcoholic goldfish. If living in London this past year has taught us anything, it’s that you need to make the most of unlimited alcohol, regardless of its state of matter.

Eventually we decide it’s time to find Adsy before he starts a fight with himself. The three of us take a break from the cloud and wander over to a bar, where a trio of mixologists are doling out (liquid) cocktails.

If I was a more competent journalist I would enquire about flavours and drink names, but the 20

minutes by the vent must have got to my head. What I can tell you is that after taking a sip we all make anguished faces – which is to say that it is very, very strong.

We return to the cloud, warning Adsy not to wander off again. “I can’t see anything in here,” he says with a worrying smile that means a terrible pun is en route. “I’m BLIND DRUNK!”

In the silence that followed – the music even screeches to a halt – Sam and I give him stern looks of disapproval. Not in public, Adsy.

Not in front of real people. But due to the lack of visibility he misses our subtle warnings and turns to an unsuspecting group who have just arrived to repeat the joke, even adlibbing something about needing “beer goggles.” Eventually he

becomes distracted by something in the mirror – “There’s that b*stard again!” – and wanders off. This time we leave him be.

Before long a loud siren blares, signalling the end of our shift in the cloud. We discard our anoraks and return, blinking, to the surface.

Around us, groups of people stumble in and out of pubs or wobble by on those annoying pedi-

bar things. We pop next door for a quick drink but, in its liquid form, it just doesn’t seem right anymore.

Too much effort, perhaps. Or, as Adsy suggests with a sad sigh, “not enough anoraks.”

Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are statutory bodies responsible for commissioning health services. They work with patients, health professionals, community groups and the local authority to improve health and health services locally.

Southwark CCG has an exciting opportunity for a new Lay Member to join our Governing Body and play an important role in the CCG.

The CCG is made up of 44 GP practices covering the London Borough of Southwark with a total registered patient population of 310,000.

Lay members bring different perspectives to the CCG Governing Body, drawn from their varied experiences, professional backgrounds and previous vocational roles. Lay members work as part of the CCG’s Governing Body to help shape the CCG’s work and assist the organisation’s consideration of key issues and opportunities.

Lay members also act to ensure that their colleagues on the CCG Governing Body – and in the organisation in general – consider a range of views across the whole of its business, and where decisions are made, that they are done so on the basis of evidence and sound reasoning.

Lay members should understand good organisational governance and act to ensure it is adhered to at all times by the CCG.

Lay Member – Public and Patient Involvement Time commitment: 2.5 days per month.

Remuneration: £7,882 per annum.

We are looking to recruit a Lay Member with expertise and experience in the field of public and patient involvement to serve as a member of the CCG’s Governing Body. Your role is to enable the CCG to make sure that in all aspects of our business the patient and public ‘voice’ and the views of local people is both sought and heard. You’ll also see that the CCG acts on this information to improve the quality of the care services we commission.

You will share your expertise and experience of engagement with communities and patients to see that the CCG works to empower people who live in Southwark to take an active interest in their own healthcare.

You’ll work to see that the CCG builds and maintains an effective relationship with the local Healthwatch and draws on existing patient and public engagement and involvement expertise from across the borough.

You will also be involved in joint arrangements across the six SE London Clinical Commissioning Group’s, and participate in Governing Body and other meetings.

Applicants will be able to demonstrate a special interest in Southwark, for example, living or working in the area or by being closely involved in projects that affect the area. Some time commitment may be required in the evenings and there will be some travel within the CCG boundary and occasionally further afield. This post is a three year appointment.

DULWICH HAMLET boss Gavin Rose hopes experienced faces he has brought in this pre-season will be the final piece of the jigsaw that will secure his side promotion from the Ryman Premier League.

This will be the Pink and Blues third year on the third rung of the non-league ladder under Rose, and the Dulwich gaffer is hoping this time they will gain promotion after two near misses in previous seasons.

Rose told the News: “We have come close in the last couple of seasons to getting promotion and if you look at teams like Wealdstone and Maidstone, who have gone up, they have maybe had players with experience that we didn’t have.

FISHER FC players have been pulling no punches this preseason as boss Dean Harrison has had them in the boxing gym in the run up to their season opener on Saturday.

The Rotherhithe club, who will start this season playing their home games at Champion Hill in Dulwich, get their Southern Counties East Football League campaign underway this Saturday when they travel to Deal Town.

Just two days later they will play their first home game, a 7.45pm kick off, against Cray Valley PM in East Dulwich.

Harrison, who is overseeing his first Fisher pre-season since taking over part way through last campaign, told the News he wanted to mix things up for the players.

He said: “We changed it up as a lot of clubs are quite old school and tend to run players into the ground in pre-season.

“We did our fitness work but we had regular boxing sessions on a Monday night with Mickey Cantwell and his team.

“The boys loved that and it was great for fitness, team bonding and it kept things interesting for everybody.”

But Harrison admitted that preseason has been tougher than he hoped. He added: “It has not been easy as we lost most of the squad from last season.

“We just don’t have a budget and players want money.

“So we have to start from afresh and that meant we had to leave things like working on shape and formations until late as we had to get the players in.

“That is not ideal but with all the money flying around in the Kent League it is difficult to keep hold of talented players.”

AMERICAN FOOTBALL side South London Renegades completed the double over their local rivals London Warriors with a hard thought win in Thornton Heath last week.

The Renegades won the home fixture, played in Peckham, 12-6 in a hard fought physical encounter. Both teams needed to win the latest contest.

The Warriors to needed to restore some pride after a disappointing season which saw the former number one team struggling to keep up in the Southern Premier conference.

The Renegades needed to bounce back following their narrow loss two weeks earlier to reigning British champions the London Blitz.

The weather would be a factor in this game as the rain began pelting down as the teams lined up for the kick off.

Wet weather meant passing the ball was difficult so the Renegades went to work running the ball hard at the Warriors stout defence.

First blood went to the Renegades at the start of the second quarter when fullback Ade Labisi sprinted towards the endzone from 30 yards out, shrugging off Warriors linebackers as he crashed over for the score.

As the weather cleared both teams went to the air but unfortunately for the Warriors Renegades man of the match Kunle Omisakin was waiting and he intercepted a team record three Warrior passes.

The game was put to rest early in the fourth quarter when the Renegades outstanding offensive line opened up a hole big enough to run a bus through and running back Andy Owusu ran through virtually untouched for a 60 yard score.

The Renegades now have one game remaining and are in excellent position to take the second playoff in the Southern Premier Conference.

That game is against the Farnham Knights on Sunday, kicking off at noon in Peckham Rye.

Over the past three weeks Millwall Community Trust has seen over 300 young people take part in their Summer Soccer Schools and One Goal project. It’s been a fantastic start to the Summer with Millwall first team player visits from Jimmy Abdou, Tom King, Jordan Archer and Ben Thompson. Lucky participants also got the chance to watch the entire Millwall team train under Neil Harris during the Open Training Day at the Den.

ONE GOAL

MILLWALL COMMUNITY Trust in partnership with L&Q housing association have launched their summer ‘One Goal’ programme in the South London boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham.

In conjunction with 9 football clubs across the London city along with the help of £387,000 from the L&Q foundation, One Goal is a brand new sport and creative arts programme with the end goal being to use the huge allure of nine professional clubs and sport to engage, motivate and invigorate young people in the city of London.

The list of renowned clubs involved in the ‘One Goal’ programme includes Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspurs, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Millwall, Leyton Orient and Dagenham & Redbridge. The programme will offer the participants several opportunities which will include coaching qualifications, access to sport sessions such as football, cricket, tennis, athletics and Hockey, skill workshops, as well as a number of creative activities including arts and writing.

Monday 27th July 2015 saw Millwall Community Trust commence their ‘One Goal’ programme for the Summer with

over 60 enthusiastic participants walking through the doors. The morning period of 10am-12:30pm saw the young attendees take part in a variety of sports led by the trusts very own coaches. After the lunch period the young people then engaged in boxing led by two two external boxing professionals from Frank Bruno’s boxing academy. Other activities available via the One Goal programme include street dance, Futsal, animal experiences, DJ workshops, Dr Bike and laser tag.

These activities will be running weekdays throughout the Summer at 3 local venues – The Lions Centre,

Downside Fisher Youth Club and Burgess Park. Soccer Schools will also be continuing at The Lions Centre for the remainder of the Summer.

IT WAS a summer that started with some fond farewells as boss Neil Harris cleared the decks following relegation from the Championship.

Club captain Alan Dunne was among 18 players released in May and, after leaving out a number of loan signings towards the end of last season to give some of the club’s young players a chance, this was another ruthless statement of intent

This time last year some saw Millwall as a certainty to reach at least the play-offs, with a manager in charge who had won promotion to the Premier League with his two previous clubs.

And it looked that way initially after Ian Holloway’s side enjoyed a promising

lure James Hanson from Bradford City, Harris bided his time before finally getting one of his other top targets when Steve Morison joined this week.

For all the forward thinking, Morison is another brought on board this summer that harks back to the club’s recent past, being part of the side that gained promotion to the Championship in 2010 alongside Craig and Andy Frampton.

Frampton joined as part of changes to the club’s coaching personnel that also saw former Ireland international David Connolly come in to oversee the U18s with Larry McAvoy.

It is the signing of Morison, though, as well as the fine pre-season form of Onyedinma, that has boosted the belief that Millwall can make an immediate return to the Championship.

Morison has experience in the Premier League and, based on his goal-scoring record, should bring a guarantee of at least 15 goals.

NEIL HARRIS was keen to emphasise the positives after Millwall’s pre-season unbeaten run came to an end in their last game – but he acknowledged his side will have to improve defensively before the trip to Shrewsbury this Saturday.

Although Millwall are unlikely to face as accomplished a passing side as CD Tondela in League One next season, the Portuguese did expose some rustiness in defence that has been evident in the Lions’ preseason games.

That was illustrated again before the away side’s winning goal on 67 minutes when Luis Machado who was probably the shortest player on the pitch - was left in far too much space at the back post to head past David Forde.

The cross had come from a deep position and the fact that Machado had so much time to pick his spot emphasised that there is still some balance to be struck between pressing high up the pitch and leaving space behind the defence.

Harris had earlier seen Fred Onyedinma again show the worth of sending him out on loan to Wycombe Wanderers last season and, after his brilliant run and finish against a disciplined and organised Tondela side, the feeling is he has a big contribution to make this season.

On the opposite wing Lee Martin looked re-energised and he set the tone for the afternoon with some surging runs from deep.

heading the ball past Tondela’s English keeper Matt Jones on the stroke of halftime for Millwall’s second equaliser.

That will have pleased Harris, particularly with so much work having gone into practising set-pieces during pre-season. It was the fourth game in a row that Millwall scored from a dead ball or a set-piece and Steve Morison’s signing from Leeds United will offer even more of a threat in that area.

Harris thought all three goals conceded could have been prevented, however, and would have found the manner of the first one in particular especially jarring.

The Millwall boss felt the foul his side gave away 35 yards out near the right touchline was needless and watching Luis Tinoco’s subsequent free-kick elude everyone in the box before drifting just inside Forde’s righthand post didn’t help his mood.

And less than two minutes after Onyedinma had lifted the ball delicately over Jones, Wagner took advantage of some hesitancy in Millwall’s box to place a shot just inside Forde’s near post.

Tondela, who have risen spectacularly from the fifth tier of Portuguese football to the top flight in

little over ten years, showed their ability to mix finesse with fight when it was required, and at times the game threatened to boil over with tempers fraying on both sides.

Harris was pleased with the aggression shown but he said afterwards he doesn’t want it to spill into petulance with the concession of free-kicks in dangerous areas.

And with Shrewsbury strike duo James Collins and Liam McAlinden in pre-season goal-scoring form, it will be an important focus this weekend if the Lions are to start their league campaign with a win.

Defender wants to contribute to goals tally

MARK BEEVERS says Millwall are “under no illusions” about the challenge of returning to the Championship at the first

attempt next season.

Last season, Barnsley and Doncaster finished mid-table after relegation to League One while Yeovil Town dropped to League Two. The previous season Wolves

managed to bounce straight back but history shows the odds on doing so are long.

The last time Millwall dropped into the third tier it was four seasons before they hauled themselves back into the Championship via the playoffs in 2009-10.

Saturday’s opponents Shrewsbury, meanwhile, have recent experience of what it takes to adapt to relegation and make a swift return.

They finished second in League Two last season to gain automatic promotion after demotion the season before.

They rounded off their pre-season with a comprehensive 4-1 win at Tranmere last Saturday making them dangerous opponents for the Lions this weekend.

“I’m expecting a tough test against them,” Beevers said. “We’re under no illusions that just because we dropped down a league we’re going to walk this division. There’s some really good teams in this league and it’s a tough one to get out of.

“I think if you look at the teams that have gone down from the Championship to League One sometimes they’ve found it difficult to get back again. So we know that every team we come up against it’s going to be a tough test. Shrewsbury will be no different.

“The manager has played for the club before so he knows what it will take. I think he’s got the right group of players who have got that feeling in their system as well. So when we

need to stamp some authority we’ve got the players to do that.

“We’re raring to get going. We want to get those first few games out of the way and hopefully pick up as many points as we can. We want to get a good rhythm going early and see where that takes us.”

Beevers is likely to start at leftback on Saturday with summer acquisition Joe Martin injured and though he is more comfortable in the centre he says he’ll “play wherever the manager wants me to play”.

The former Sheffield Wednesday defender was tested by tricky CD Tondela winger Luis Machado last Saturday but says the team have taken the lessons and the positives from the 3-2 defeat.

“You’re going to come across players like that and you’ve got to know how to deal with them,” he said.

“We’ve got to be patient, learn when to step on to the ball and press as a team, get the ball back and hit quickly on the counter. It’s up to the manager to decide what way we play.

“A lot of people might say the results don’t really matter in preseason but the manager has said he wants to develop a winning mentality. Any game that we play we want to win it so it was disappointing to get beaten.

“But it was a good test for us and personally I thought a 3-2 loss didn’t reflect how we played. I think the lads got enough out of it and we’re

ready for the first game on Saturday.

“We created a lot of chances and if we can take more of them, and I’m sure we will do that in League One, then we’ll be fine.”

Many of those chances came from set-pieces, which has been a feature of pre-season. Millwall scored from a dead ball or set-piece in each of the four games, with Beevers getting the winner at Stevenage.

And he has set himself a personal target for next season.

He explained: “As a centre-half you look to try to get about five goals in a season and if you can get any more than that then happy days.

The manager has said before that set-pieces are going to be important for us, but then they are important for everybody.

“A good chunk of the goals that are scored throughout the football league are from set plays. We’ve got good size in our team as well so we’ve got to capitalise on that and make sure we get some goals from that source.”

But it’s the basics of defending he will be focused on initially and hopes the work done during the summer will be evident at Shrewsbury.

“We’re always doing work on the back four as a unit. It’s important to gel and develop relationships with the people you’re playing alongside.

We’ve been doing that throughout pre-season and hopefully we can bring what we’ve learned out on the pitch on Saturday.”

STEVE MORISON said he knows what is expected of him after re-joining the club this week from Leeds United.

The 31-year-old striker signed an initial one-year deal after passing a medical on Tuesday.

Morison scored 40 goals during his first spell with the club between 2009 and 2011 and was part of the side that won promotion from League One via the play-offs in 2010.

And he is aiming to help the club make a swift return to the Championship after relegation last season.

“I know what this place is all about,” he told the club’s official website. “I know what Neil is all about, what the fans are all about.

“I know what Andy (Ambler) expects, what John (Berylson) expects.

“I’m not coming here under any illusions that this is going to be an easy ride. I’m playing for my future, the club needs to get back to where it should be and hopefully we’ve got everything in place to get us there.”

Aiden O’Brien will provide further competition when he returns from injury and boss Neil Harris was pleased to be able to add the experience of his former team-mate to the squad.

“This is where he has played his best football and this is where he finds the fire in his belly to perform,” Harris said. “He is

desperate to start scoring goals for Millwall again.”

“I think the combination of strikers that we've got will bring the best out of Steve.

“He knows what is demanded of him whenever he pulls on a Millwall shirt. After being away from the club for a few years he has that hunger to return and do well.

“Steve is here for this season but he wants to stay at the club longterm.

“He is fit and has had an excellent pre-season.”

NEW SIGNING IN SQUAD FOR LEAGUE OPENER

NEW SIGNING Steve Morison will go straight into the Millwall squad for the Sky Bet League One opener at Shrewbury Town this Saturday.

The former Norwich City centreforward will compete with John Marquis and Lee Gregory for a place in the starting 11.

Morison had a full pre-season at Leeds United and Neil Harris admitted he has a tough decision to make ahead of the game.

“Steve is available for Saturday, as are Lee and John,” Harris said. “Everyone is raring to go and it certainly gives me food for thought for the weekend.

“Aiden O'Brien will be back in a couple of weeks and Jamie Philpot is progressing every day in training so competition for places is definitely on over the course of the season.”

Harris gave a clue as to his firstchoice side in the last pre-season friendly against CD Tondela. Lee Martin and Fred Onyedinma started in the wide positions and did well enough to retain their places.

Harris says midfielder Jimmy Abdou is “touch and go” for the game meaning Ed Upson should continue to partner Shaun Williams in midfield.

With Joe Martin out Mark Beevers will play at left-back, while Harris may opt for the more experienced Byron Webster to partner captain Tony Craig in the centre of defence.

Harris will be on the first hour of Lions Live on Thursday evening (August 6) discussing the season ahead.

The show will be on from 68pm for this week only before returning to its regular 7-9pm slot from next week.
