Sell-off fears of council homes are inevitable

I

T MAKES absolute sense for the council to carry out a massive survey of its housing stock, but town hall bosses should not be surprised that tenants see this as a move towards selling off their homes when they employ an estate agent to do it.

If the Labour-run administration is going to make good on its manifesto pledge of creating 11,000 new council homes in the next 30 years, identifying their current assets is an obvious starting point.

Many have criticised the pledge because of its timescale of 30 years. Without set dates and targets during this period, Council Leader Peter John could be promising these desperately needed homes on the never never. The News has revealed the exact figures of council homes lost compared to the amount of social homes retained in the Heygate regeneration programme.

Essentially 1,194 council homes have been lost and the amount of truly affordable homes with social housing rents will be between 74 and 84.

Certainly many in the borough and some on the Heygate felt that the estate was not viable and needed to be demolished.

Successive council administrations have said that there was not enough money to make these homes decent, warm and safe.

Selling off this prime real estate land to developers would bring in enough money to start from scratch and start building more council homes – even if that does mean more high rises. This does make sense, but with numerous major and smaller regeneration projects now underway or in the pipeline like the Aylesbury, the 50,000 properties in this latest survey are what are left.

Perhaps for the first time this survey has looked not only at the net value of each property, but the sustainability of the community on particular estates and streets.

Many will see this as an exercise in categorising communities and classing some estates as ‘sink estates’. Certainly if the council plans to use the data – as it has suggested – to see what it has left, the condition of those properties and the social needs of the inhabitants to plan how they are going to make them better, no-one can criticise them. However, identifying high value land always comes with a flip-side, which was borne out a decade ago with the infamous Southwark Estates Initiative.

Under this scheme communities were set against each other, where residents for example in an estate on Tooley Street saw their homes earmarked for sale so more could be invested in East Dulwich estates.

The fact the council employed estate agent Savills to conduct the survey does inevitably raise suspicions. It is too early to say exactly how the findings will be used and it right the local paper and indeed opposition councillors keep an eye on this process, to ensure that the survey helps to improve the lives of residents currently living in Southwark.

Drinkers at new pop-up bar can absorb alcohol from ‘ walk-in cocktail cloud’

HOW DO you like your martini?

Shaken, stirred… or in vapour form?

An unusual new pop-up bar opening in Borough Market next week will boast a ‘walk-in cloud’ experience, giving cocktail connoisseurs the chance to absorb their drinks straight into their bloodstream.

A special room will be pumped full of flavoured, alcoholic vapour, which can be breathed in through the lungs and imbibed through the eyeballs. An hourlong session roughly equates to one large cocktail – although you can bring in another cocktail in its more traditional liquid form if you want to double up.

This bizarre way to booze will take place in the atmospheric confines of the site of an ancient monastery, a gothic setting that has inspired many of the drinks on the menu.

Sam Bompas, co-founder of the Alcoholic Architecture project along

with Harry Parr, told the News: “We have secured a human skull which drinks will be served in, and are also investigating claims that the venue is haunted. We’re actually going to meet with a medium to see whether the men’s bathroom is really inhabited by a ghost.

“We also believe we are one of the only venues serving purely monastic drinks – drinks created by monks - such as Chartreuse, Benedictine, Trappist

beer and even the notorious Buckfast.”

He added that it was especially satisfying to set up in Borough Market, which inspired his love affair with food and drink.

He said: “The reason I quit my old job was because of the market. I worked in the city in finance but quit to pursue my true passion.

“I actually tried to work at Borough Market before but we failed. Now, eight years later, we’re here realising our dream.”

Sam, who was born and raised in Southwark, hopes that residents and visitors to the borough will share his excitement at the upcoming project.

He said: “This is the end result of years of work and research. It should be really fun - I think it’s going to be really rather wonderful.”

The project will take place from July 30 until sometime in January in Cathedral Street. The experience costs between £10 and £12.50, depending on the time of day.

‘1 in 20 underwent FGM’

A SHOCKING study released earlier this week revealed that nearly one-in-20 women in the borough are thought to have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the highest percentage in England and Wales.

It also estimated that over ten per cent of women in the borough were born to a mother who has undergone the horrific procedure, which involves the removal of the clitoris and labia, often using a razor without the use of anaesthetic.

In extreme circumstance, the skin of the vagina is also stitched together to

preserve the victim’s virginity until marriage.

The study, carried out by charity Equality Now and the City of London University, also revealed that no authority in England and Wales is thought to be free from FGM victims - although no area comes close to Southwark’s extraordinarily high percentage.

The figures were estimated by analysing the demographic break-down of Southwark, which includes a high percentage of women from countries where FGM is common. It is not based on known cases.

South London boroughs Lambeth and Greenwich are also ranked highly on the

list, with 3.22 per cent and 2.97 per cent of women respectively affected in each area – still dwarfed by Southwark’s total of 4.74 per cent.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, said: “Regrettably, FGM does affect some of our communities in Southwark, and it’s something that all the relevant agencies have been working hard to tackle. The police lead on prosecuting those responsible while the NHS leads our campaign to combat FGM as midwives and other healthcare professionals are best-placed to identify victims.

‘Pitbull’ seized by police after attack BERMONDSEY

A “SUSPECTED pitbull” was seized by police from a Bermondsey estate last week after a vicious attack on another dog.

Police confiscated the dog at 6.45am last Friday, executing a search warrant under the Dangerous Dogs Act at a property on the Dickens Estate.

A police spokesperson said that it had been involved in an alleged attack on another dog on June 29 by Copperfield House.

They said: “It was reported that a male was out walking his dog when a pitbull like dog attacked his dog and bit it six times which resulted in her needing treatment from vet.

“The offending dog, described as a pit bull held on to the dog and the owners, two males, had to use force against the dog for it to release its bite. Once the dogs were separated the owners of the pitbull left the scene.” There have been a spate of pitbull attacks in the SE1 estate this summer, with one resident, who wished to remain anonymous, telling the News that up to five other dogs had been attacked.

She said: “In three months there have now been six

attacks. I saw it [a dog] attack one dog, it just came out of nowhere. Pitbulls are so dangerous, it makes you worried when you see young children about.”

Another dog, a King Charles, was badly injured after being attacked by a suspected pitbull in the estate. The seized dog is now in a secure kennels while police try to determine whether it is a dangerous breed, such as a pitbull terrier of dogo argentine, both of which are illegal in the United Kingdom. A police spokesperson said that if the dog is found to be of an illegal type, it is likely that it will be destroyed. It may still be destroyed even if it is not an illegal type but still deemed dangerously out of control. The dog may also be rehomed or returned to the owners, depending on the results of the investigation. No arrests have been made.

New MPs defend choice to abstain on constroversial Welfare Bill vote

THE TWO new MPs for Southwark voted in line with their veteran Labour comrade this week as a controversial Welfare Bill split the party.

Neil Coyle, representing Bermondsey and Old Southwark and Helen Hayes, who took over Tessa Jowell’s seat in Dulwich and West Norwood both defended their decision to abstain from the vote which seeks to slash working benefits and child tax credits.

Harriet Harman, longstanding MP for Camberwell and Peckham and acting leader of the Labour party since Ed Miliband’s humiliating defeat in May, instructed all her ministers to abstain from the vote in a move which led to a party revolt.

“If we oppose everything, we’ll succeed on nothing,” she said as she urged ministers to get in line and vote as instructed.

A total of 48 MPs rebelled and voted against the bill after an amendment proposed by Ms MPs Helen Hayes and Neil Coyle

Harman failed to get enough support.

Harman and the Labour MPs who followed her into the voting lobby have faced criticism for supporting legislation which would affect poorer families accessing working benefits.

Neil Coyle said he abstained but would fight aspects of the bill as it goes through the various stages before it could be brought into law.

“We will be seeking radical changes to the proposals that would increase child poverty locally and axe £30 per week from local disabled people,” he said. “The Tory agenda will be forced to change in the months ahead.”

Helen Hayes admitted that the bill was “problematic” and said it had been “a difficult decision for all of us in Labour” but stood by her abstention because she supports some elements of the bill like the creation of three thousand apprenticeships.

“When you agree with some bits and not others the appropriate thing to abstain in that situation,” she said.

Extended service for mourners

An extended service has been arranged for the Bermondsey boy due to the large number of mourners expected to attend, after hundreds of people took part in a memorial march through the borough earlier this month.

The service will be held at Honor Oak Crematorium and will begin at 10.45am. Due to the limited space inside, wristbands will be given to family members and close friends to allow them inside.

However, the doors will be left open and speakers will broadcast the service to people waiting outside.

Those outside will have the chance to enter and pay their respects during the second part of the service.

A funeral cortege, including a Millwall Football Club fans’ bus carrying flowers and tributes, will travel from the Blackmore family home in Vaughan Street at 9.30am. It will pass by the Den stadium and through the Blue, allowing people

who cannot make it to the service to say goodbye.

Tommy died following an incident at Queen Elizabeth Road in the early hours of June 13. He was found “critically injured” by police and rushed to hospital. He couldn’t be saved and died soon after.

A 28-year-old man, Lloyd Smythe of Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, was arrested and charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Central Criminal Court on November 29.

College to sell off Camberwell campus Student, parents and staff protested in May after the college’s management announced the Southampton Way site’s future was in the balance. They argued that there were alternate ways to make cuts or raise money, such as by better exploiting the empty nursery building.

Parents take their battle to get Harvey new drug to parliament

A DETERMINED little Millwall fan took his fight to Westminster last week, as children suffering from a rare disease demonstrated to get a drug on the NHS which could change their lives.

Harvey Brown and his mum and dad, Vikki and Dean, joined a group of fifty protestors on Wednesday to demand that the health service fund the drug Vimizim, which could help Harvey and the 77 other children in the UK with the ultra-rare disease, Morquio, live a longer, happier life.

Morquio is an inherited illness which means children like Harvey rarely grow to above three foot tall or live beyond their twenties.

After a successful clinical trial, Vimizim was shown to help children like Harvey grow stronger, need fewer operations, walk without mobility aids and live for longer.

Since it was licensed by the European Medicines Agency in April last year, Harvey and his mum and dad have been waiting to hear whether the NHS would pay for the expensive drug to be offered in this country.

After the decision was postponed again until October, families like the Browns, of Galleywall Road, decided to tell the government themselves what getting the drug would mean to them.

“It would mean we wouldn’t lie in bed at night worrying about his future,” said Vikki, 46. “It would mean he could have a better quality of life and be able to do more than he can at the moment. Most importantly it would prolong his life,” added Vikki, who wishes more than

anything that she could swap places with her beloved son.

The MPS Society – the charity which supports Morquio sufferers, has set up a crowdfunding page to raise money for children like Harvey to get the treatment they need until the NHS decision in October.

A RARE African pygmy hedgehog was left too fat to roll up into a ball and had shed its spines after it was dumped with the rubbish at a block of flats in Bermondsey.

Hedgy was close to death when she was discovered by a passer-by, who spotted her in a wet cardboard box near the bins in Anchor Street, off Southwark Park Rd. She was taken to the Blue Cross

animal hospital at Victoria, where she is being nursed back to health.

Because this rare species needs to live in specific conditions, her skin had become covered in sores after she was abandoned in the British climate, and her spines had mostly fallen out.

“We were really shocked by the state Hedgy was in,” said Blue Cross nurse Shakira Miles. “Her skin condition had been neglected for so long that it had caused almost all her spines to fall out and she is so overweight that she can’t even curl into a ball properly. She

certainly wouldn’t have survived for much longer if she hadn’t been found.”

Poor Hedgy also had in-growing claws and her ears were blocked with sores and scabs, also covering her eyes, due to an infestation of mites.

Blue Cross vets expect that within the next three to four weeks, Hedgy’s spines will start to grow back before

they can find a new home for her.

Becky Thwaites, Blue Cross Public Affairs Officer, said Hedgy was just one of many exotic pets being abandoned on our streets, as owners realised they did not have the expertise to look after them properly. “These trends in ‘novelty pets’ are very worrying. Animals like African

hedgehogs look really cute and are easy to buy online, but the novelty can soon wear off when people realise they are not easy to care for and can live for up to eight years,” she said.

In May two bearded dragons were dumped in a Camberwell stairwell and left to die and had to be rescued by the RSPCA.

Report slams home as ‘inadequate’ after surprise inspection by CQC

A BERMONDSEY care home for the elderly has been placed into ‘special measures’ by a health watchdog, and has been given six months to make ‘significant improvements’.

A report by the Care Quality Commission, following a surprise inspection at Tower Bridge Care Home, said that an elderly resident had to wait seventeen hours for a drink last month It also said that residents were “not protected against malnutrition and dehydration” and that, as well as the seventeen hour wait for a drink, one resident was not served breakfast because they were asleep.

The report, which slammed the care home as “inadequate”, also said that a number of mistakes were made when administering medicine to residents, from overdosing to incorrect drugs being used.

It said: “One person received more

sedating medicine than required, one person did not receive sufficient medicine to help manage their mental illness and one person received medicine they did not require which could have had a negative impact on their health.”

The centre has now been placed under “special measures”, which means that Southwark Council will not be referring any more elderly people there. It will be given six months to make “significant improvements” before another inspection takes place.

The centre is run by HC-One, which also manages Camberwell Green Care Home, which also remains under “special measures” since an inspection in February.

A spokesperson for HC-One told the News that since the inspection the Tower Bridge home had appointed several new people to the management and nursing teams, as well as implementing a “robust” new drug administration system.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark cabinet member for adult social care and

financial inclusion, said: “As the local authority we expect care providers operating in the borough to provide our residents with the highest quality care and support. It is extremely disappointing that the provider HC-One is failing to meet the national standards for quality of care at Tower Bridge Care Centre.

“Over the coming months we will be working with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), NHS colleagues and our partners, to ensure that the centre urgently addresses the CQC requirements and improves its standards of care to what we, the people being cared for and their relatives, expect from the provider.”

A spokesperson for HC-One said: “Nothing is more important to us than the health, safety and wellbeing of each person we support. We took the points raised by the Care Quality Commission extremely seriously, and immediately implemented a comprehensive and robust action plan to address their feedback.”

Sculptor delighted after stolen work is returned

A BERMONDSEY sculptor is delighted after a thief decided to do the right thing and return a “unique piece of artwork” that was stolen during an exhibition in Tanner Street Park this month.

Austin Emery, who organised the open-air ‘Transformism’ project to “bring the community together”, told the News he was “shocked” to discover a piece entitled ‘Medal of Honour’ had been nabbed.

He said: “Doni the artist achieved a feat of technical brilliance. It was a great achievement and very skilfully created. The theft really upset me and left a bad taste in my mouth. It felt like someone attacked the exhibition.”

However, he was delighted to discover that the item had been returned to the park on Wednesday morning, two weeks after it had gone missing.

He said: “I’m over the moon for Doni, I’m absolutely thrilled. He’s really excited to get it back and I’m pleased our campaign to get it

returned worked. We plastered the area with posters and appealed to everyone on social media.

“I think whoever was responsible must have seen all the attention it was getting and felt ashamed. Maybe they took it for their home or their office, but after all the noise we were making they probably realised what they had done.”

He added that his faith in the community had been completely restored and the sentiment of his project had shone through.

He said: “When the ‘Medal of Honour’ was taken it felt like someone had attacked the exhibition and spoiled the collection. The thing with artwork is that it’s one of a kind.

“But now the collection is complete and there is no sour taste about it. This was always going to be the challenge with an outdoor exhibition but now we’ve got it back and the aim of bringing the community together has been saved.”

Kids trade school for the market

SOUTHWARK SCHOOL children gave stall holders a run for their money last week as they flogged their own home-grown produce at Borough Market.

As part of the 1,000th birthday celebrations for the London landmark, children at Charlotte Sharman and Phoenix Primary in Southwark and St Jude’s in Lambeth were shown how to grow fruit and vegetables from seed.

The green-fingered pupils learnt from the best when Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins gave them a lesson on how to get the most from their school gardens and vegetable plots.

The children raised just over £300 on the day for Fare Share, a charity which

creates much needed meals by rescuing good food which would otherwise go to waste. The Summer Sale event at the market was the culmination of the Grow Your Own project, supported by the School Food Matters charity and United St Saviour’s.

RESIDENTS IN Herne Hill have been shattered by “absolutely staggering” charges to have the glass in their windows replaced.

The hefty bills have come just eight years after leaseholders in the Pynnersmead and Denesmead blocks were already charged to have their windows replaced but when the contractor went bust, the works were never completed.

Speaking to the News, leaseholder Andy Hamblin, 36, said he doesn’t even know what he is getting for the £9,000 - £11,000 the council is demanding as it seems even if an individual property does not get reglazed in the end, the owner will still have to pay the full bill, as was the case in 2007.

“I don’t think that’s a very good way to do business. If you had this done to your property you’d expect people to come and tell you exactly what you are going to get for your money,” he said.

Some neighbours have told Andy they will have to move out if the council insists on these charges, while others have had to put their lives on hold. “I’m trying to run a business and I get slapped with an £11,000 bill for something completely unnecessary.

Everyone’s put their life on hold. You can’t make decisions based on what you have in the bank,” he said.

Fellow leaseholder, Ru Nash, originally of Georgia, said it was easier fighting the Soviet regime than Southwark Council.

would have all the powers to try and silence the leaseholders and pretty much corner us into taking on huge unjustifiable costs,” she said, adding that she was “extremely disappointed” at the way officers have dealt with leaseholders with a “computer says no” approach to any questions raised.

Hugh Clements of Denesmead said after one contractor advised the window frames only had two years of life left in them, replacing the glass alone seemed like a “false economy.”

Southwark’s cabinet member for Housing, Richard Livingstone, said: “We appreciate that ensuring our estates are up to the Government standard for decent homes can be expensive, which is why the council offers a wide range of payment plans for leaseholders.

“No refurbishment work is done where it is not necessary to carry out essential repairs and work is competitively tendered to ensure we are getting the best deals and keeping costs as low as possible. Ultimately, if leaseholders do not pay the bills that they are responsible for, then it would mean that council tenants would have to make up the shortfall through their rents. However we would be happy to meet again with these leaseholders to explain our position and hear their views.”

Cllr Livingstone added that the council’s contractor estimated the current frames would last for fourteen years and that some windows were replaced in 2007 but leaseholders were also charged at that time for improvements to communal areas.

Council slammed for not acting on crippling childcare costs report EXCLUSIVE

A YEAR after a special commission was charged with finding ways to tackle crippling childcare costs in the borough, the council has been slammed for “not spending a single penny to help Southwark parents.”

Dame Tessa Jowell, former MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, led the team which produced a report in March recommending an online matchmaking service for parents and childminders, more workplace nurseries and travel discounts for parents.

But Southwark Liberal Democrat Leader, Anood Al Samerai, said she is “frustrated” that a report to the council’s cabinet this week to give more detail on how these recommendations would be implemented in Southwark failed to do so and instead stated that another report would give more detail in the Autumn.

The team was originally set up with Dame Jowell last July.

“What have they been doing all this time?” she said. “It was set up a year ago and since then all they’ve done is spend some money on a commission and not spent a single penny on childcare.”

Southwark’s cabinet member for children and schools Victoria Mills said the £70,000 commission covering Southwark and Lambeth was needed to find local solutions to a national problem.

“We have set out a series of practical responses to the Commission’s recommendations, which will help parents and childcare providers,” she said. “We’re also delighted to announce that a council grant will be provided to support a brand new nursery as well as £200,000 funding for new community nursery provision, which will provide more childcare places for local parents,” she added.

The report to cabinet lists council commitments to develop an online childcare matchmaking service, help raise awareness of local childcare services, and look into supporting workplace nurseries but states a “more detailed programme of activities” will be brought to cabinet in the Autumn.

NESTLED IN a leafy Peckham street whole new worlds are being built behind closed doors.

An ancient Japanese city, a house of cards and... a giant, foaming poo are just some of the spectacular creations of Dragon Smoke Construction, writes Amelia Burr…

Zane McGill says “there’s never a dull day” as a set builder in SE15.

Each request from a budding theatre company to a television series like Spooks brings with it a fresh challenge – like how to build a two and a half metre tall giant, foaming poo. The King’s Head theatre in Islington made this particular request for a play about a man who has lived in a cave for 30 years.

For this job, Zane and his head chippy, Eddie filled a wood frame with a mixture of expanding foam and polyurethane stain “so as it foams it creates different browns,” Zane says excitedly, proud of the great steaming masterpiece which was two months in the making.

“It’s a constant journey of knowledge,” said Zane. “There’s never a dull day at work.”

Out of Zane’s twenty years’ experience in set construction the thing he is most proud of is building an “amazing” compound elliptical tube tunnel for the Torchwood series. On planet earth that basically means building half a tube shape which goes around a bend... in plywood.

Then there was the Mr Bean Snickers advert - the ‘crouching tiger’-style one. Zane and his crew built the 60ft-long Japanese rooftops for the high-flying aerial stunts. The roofs had to be three times the length of a standard house so the stuntmen had the space to get a run up, which meant they had to be built in the carpark of the vast Dragon warehouse as they wouldn’t fit inside.

After six weeks of solid construction and finishing, the rooftops arrived on set at Black Island studios. When they began filming, the stuntman complained the surface wasn’t slippery enough for him to move freely. “They covered it in bees’ wax and turpentine and then buffed the hell out of it,” said Zane, who then witnessed the stunt-ninja fly eight foot passed the crash mat and get rushed to hospital.

Zane and his merry band of freelance set constructors, artists and hydraulics experts built the sets for every series of the popular Spooks series - including an Eastern European interrogation bunker. “It’s always fun to see your name in the

credits,” said Zane, whose training as a cabinet maker sometimes goes against the fleeting nature of film and TV set design.

“I’ve got a real thing about finish.

Coming from a cabinet making background you make things that are permanent. I still have that ethos and thought in my head to build things to last,” he said.

But it’s only the image captured on film which lasts, as the majority of the enormous sets constructed in the warehouse just off Chadwick Road gets destroyed. “The bits we can recycle we bring back here, the rest is pretty much landfill. It’s a shame, but we give what we can in left over paints to local film and art students,” said Zane.

Although much of Dragon Smoke’s portfolio is theatrical and outlandish, like the Versace advert which Donatella Versace herself described as ‘so beautiful’, many of their creations are judged on their

success by their invisibility to the viewer. “It’s nice when you can’t tell the difference between the real thing and the thing we made,” said Zane, who recently spent weeks faithfully recreating the inside of a Morrison’s supermarket. The national supermarket chain used the moveable aisles and walls to shoot an advert which appeared to the viewer to be staged in one of their high street stores.

Zane’s favourite commissions are often the ones that earn him the least money – if any – from low budget theatre companies who need one prop to transform into ten different things on stage.

“It’s good for the brain,” said Zane, who recently had to create a bed, which was also a chair, a sun lounger and a pitch and putt!

“It’s brilliant. It’s such good fun coming to work every day,” said Zane. “Every day is different, every day is thought provoking.”

SOUTHWARK HAS returned fire after it was accused of removing war memorials from a cemetery and ‘dumping’ them in a carpark.

The Save Southwark Woods campaign, who are fighting to protect naturally occurring woodland in the borough’s cemeteries from being destroyed to create thousands of new burial spaces, accused the council of leaving the “important historic monuments” to Southwark’s war dead lying unprotected in Camberwell Old Cemetery.

Speaking to the News, Councillor Darren Merrill, cabinet member for environment and public realm, said the monuments have been “temporarily removed for important restoration work” after the 1.5metrehigh headstones began to lean and had to be fenced off. “We’re working to ensure that the cemetery is a safe place for all visitors and to prevent injuries caused by falling debris,” he said.

Fifteen memorials will be restored in total. The work on the first six is now underway and will take approximately six weeks at which point Cllr Merrill says they will be restored to their former position.

Woman ‘hit with pot after water fight’

WALWORTH: Police swarmed on Albany Road on Monday evening after a woman was said to have been hit on the head with a cooking pot after a dispute over water.

Officers were called to the Calverton block of the Aylesbury just before 8pm, after witnesses said one woman threw water over another woman and then hit her over the head with a kitchen pan.

The victim, said to be in her forties, was taken to hospital with a head injury. She was later discharged. The police have made a number of arrests, though are unable to confirm how many at this stage, and all suspects have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Tower go-ahead

BANKSIDE: Plans to build a 19storey tower were approved by councillors last week.

The new multi-purpose development will also include ten- and fifteen-storey buildings, which together will house 163 residential units – none of which are affordable homes. The development will be built on the site of the former National Grid headquarters at 185 Park Street, which is due to be demolished.

Southwark received a petition of 8,500 signatures to block their proposals, Save Southwark Woods campaigner Lewis Schaffer said he was “hopping mad” to find out the council had already applied to the church diocese to go ahead with their plans weeks beforehand. "They are making a mockery of democratic processes and totally disrespecting the people of Southwark,” said Lewis. “To pretend they were listening to the people and the petition, to other elected councillors, when they had already applied for planning, is that even legal?"

submitted an application to the church “to ensure that relevant permissions were in place as part of this on-going process”, he did not believe this rendered the council debate a sham.

“Council Assembly provided an opportunity for councillors to hear from campaigners and stakeholders and to debate the issue openly and publicly, which is precisely what happened at the meeting,” he said, adding that the council’s burial strategy has been in development for the last four years and is an ongoing process, which could have been withdrawn or amended as a result of the debate.

TEN THOUSAND people flocked to Burgess Park on Friday to celebrate Eid, the Muslim festival to mark the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.

The day started at 10am with traditional outdoor Eid prayers. In the afternoon a fun fair and stalls with food, crafts and activities kept everyone entertained.

Now in its fifth year and run by the Southwark Muslim Forum, it broke its eight thousand visitors record last year.

Southwark police officers attended, but only to contribute to the festivities with a display of 1970s vintage police cars. The London Fire Brigade also let the children have a sit in one of their fire engines.

Museum moves

BOROUGH: The London Fire Brigade’s museum is set to move from its current location in Southwark Bridge Road to a larger site in Lambeth.

The current museum, which opened in 1966, will close in September. The new museum will open its doors in Albert Embankment in at least three years. The official re-opening of the Old Kent Road fire station will also take place between 2pm and end at 4pm

ROTHERHITHE PRIMARY School is to be expanded and refurbished to take on a forecasted spike in the number of children in the north of the borough in the next five years, if council plans go ahead.

The Canada Water development is one reason for the shortage of spaces predicted around the Rotherhithe peninsula, despite Albion, Grange, Galleywall, Phoenix and Redriff all taking on additional pupils.

Southwark has committed £106.5million to its primary expansion programme to meet a ballooning population in the borough and by this September it will have created an additional 3,000 places since 2009.

The school in Rotherhithe New Road is also described as being in a “poor state of repair” in the council report discussed at Tuesday night’s

cabinet meeting, which says the expansion will provide an opportunity undertake a part or full rebuild of the site. This year the council received 3,536 applications for primary school places, up 150 from last year and a new record for the borough.

A WALWORTH school won the title of the capital’s most knowledgeable school this month after a hard fought competition at the Museum of London.

The team from Michael Faraday School in Portland Street went through months of heats before they finally claimed the top spot in the primary schools group of The Mayor of London’s annual London Knowledge Quiz on July 8.

was put to the test with questions on everything from the capital’s skyline and transport network to its history and museums. The proud Walworth pupils were handed a prize trophy after the University Challenge-style competition hosted by TV presenter Michael Absalom.

David Druly, a teacher at Michael Faraday School, said: “Our team are delighted that they’ve won. I would encourage all London schools to take part in next year’s competition, it is a really rewarding way for young people to learn about the city they live in.”

THOUSANDS OF council tenants were left dumbfounded this week after a report branded their homes as having a value less than nothing.

The survey, carried out by property management company Savills, for Southwark Council, looked at over 50,000 properties in the borough and valued them financially and socially.

Those deemed ‘Poor performing assets’- estates which need a lot of work – have been left vulnerable to ‘disposal’ (selling off) or redevelopment.

The jargon-jammed report, presented to the council’s cabinet meeting on Tuesday night, evaluated each estate, block and street property owned by Southwark in two ways. First it arrived at their ‘net present value’ (NPV) by calculating how much money would need to be spent on them over the next 30 years in repairs and maintenance costs and compared that to the amount of income it expected to receive through rent and service charges.

Then it looked at the community living in the buildings and combined indicators such as household incomes, levels of deprivation, fuel poverty, crime and anti-social behaviour, resident satisfaction, transport accessibility and health to get the ‘social sustainability’ score – which the council says helps it establish if these are places people enjoy living in or not.

In terms of the financial value, more than 4,000 homes came out with a negative number below £0 per property. That means the council would have to spend more on the upkeep of the homes than it would get back through rent and charges.

Though he agreed there were “a lot of issues” on the estate, he said the council was aware of that and to a certain extent, had allowed that to happen. He also objected to the way the report seemed to rank estates in a clinical fashion.

wanted to improve the estate they should put security gates up and give the residents key fobs.

“Each estate is different with different problems, we shouldn’t just be lumped together,” said Carol Upton, 58, who has lived on the Silverlock for 27 years. “If they got a few people from each estate and just asked them what they would like to improve that would be better.”

Cllr Johnson was also concerned that poverty levels had been used as a criteria. “What we don’t want is a situation where people on estates on low incomes are not seen as valuable to the area. These are real people’s homes that tens of

problems, of course you do, but you get that anywhere. When people come round to us they say ‘oh it’s so quiet and a nice area’. They are really lovely homes,” she said.

“It doesn’t surprise me though because there’s a lot of land here so they could build an awful lot of flats,” she added. “When they pulled the Wooddene down we said it wouldn’t be long before they decided to pull these down too.”

The report does emphasise that redevelopment would be a “last resort” and no large scale regeneration schemes were deemed necessary. thousands of people live in, not ‘council assets’. and reassured council tenants that it was only ever an exercise to see how the council could invest its funds in an informed way, to improve everyone’s living conditions.

“I would like to reassure residents

that the rankings are in no way meant to be a reflection on the people and communities living on our estates.

“They are an indication of where higher levels of investment are

needed in the buildings alone, to make sure they are up to the standards of quality our residents deserve.

“Even then they are only a starting point and we will continue to have further conversations with local tenants and homeowners about what they think needs to be done to enhance their estate, and work with them to make sure they have the best housing possible,” he said, adding that the council is determined to deliver on its commitment to make every one of its homes warm, dry

and safe.

Other options put forward in the report to improve the ‘poor performing’ estates is ‘remodelling’ (investing to improve the environment of the existing homes), rent and service charge reviews, ‘management initiatives’ (including reducing the number of empty properties and reducing repair costs), ‘diversification’ (change them from council flats to shared ownership or private rented properties), transfer them to another housing provider and ‘small scale

regeneration’.

The report makes it very clear that there is no need for Southwark to consider any further large scale redevelopment schemes like the Heygate or the Aylesbury and that any redevelopment would only be considered as a ‘last resort’.

The council is currently putting together a major works programme for the next few years with a full tenants’ and leaseholders’ consultation to be held in the autumn, before making final decisions in March next year.

Build a giant Lego ship with experts

ROTHERHITHE: Shoppers can help Lego experts build a giant ship at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre next week.

The expert Lego brick builders will be creating a three metre long ship similar to ones that would have been seen in the Rotherhithe docks during its heyday.

Once completed, the creation will be displayed in the centre for the month of August.

The centre is also looking to name the ship, and is inviting customers to submit suggestions before Sunday, August 16. The winner will receive a hamper of Lego toys.

The experts will be at the centre between 11.30am and 4.30pm on Wednesday and Thursday, July 29 and 30. There will also be ‘make & take’ workshops over the two days, where customers can build a smaller version to take away.

Food meets beer

BOROUGH: Borough Market will be hosting a new festival this weekend entitled Food Meets Beer.

The three day event, which runs from Friday to Sunday, will match sixteen dishes from the market with sixteen specialist beers from across the world. There will also be brewing workshops and cookery demonstrations, providing tipsy foodies with an opportunity to find the perfect mix of grub and glug.

Teacher given national award for charity work helping slum kids HERNE HILL

A DULWICH secondary school teacher has been honoured with a national award to recognise her outstanding service to charitable work.

Liz Parker said it was “overwhelming” when she collected her award at Westminster earlier this month, after involving the students at James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) in creating new fundraising projects.

In 2014 the biology teacher set up her own charity called AFFCAD UK, with the aim of transforming the lives of children she had met while visiting the slums of Bwaise, Uganda.

Working with Liz, JAGS pupils have devised a sustainable chicken feedmaking farm and had contact with the Ugandan children they have helped via Skype.

Liz has also focused some of the charity’s funds on helping desperate young girls out of prostitution and into training and independence.

After the awards ceremony on July 9, Liz said: “It was overwhelming to receive such a prestigious award. I couldn’t have done it without the

Knitting proves a hit for kind-hearted pupils CHILDREN AT Ilderton Primary School have been putting their new knitting skills to good use by creating a blanket for children living in slums in the midst of a bitter Indian winter.

Mary Murdoch, 67, has been going in to teach the year six kids the craft for the last eight weeks and says she is “so proud” now her protégés have made a whole blanket to keep children on the other side of the world warm.

Temperatures in India can reach as low as minus six in winter, so when Mary’s

friend Claire Sexton returned from volunteering in Dharamshala, she said she would do anything she could to help her plan to knit twenty items including hats, scarves and blankets to send back to the slum communities there. After getting off to a slow start, eleven-yearold Matthew Martinez said he felt the blanket was a “good achievement.”

“When we started we just had two sticks looking at the wall and now we can do it fast,” he said. “Some people say it’s not the right thing for a boy to knit but I just ignore them. I really enjoy it.”

Building foundations for the future Work in construction

SOUTHWARK IS teaming up with neighbours Lambeth and Lewisham to create a £1m construction skills centre, training up residents looking to get into the building trade.

With over £10.7bn worth of construction work planned or underway across the boroughs over the next few years, the councils are setting up the centre hoping to train hundreds of locals to take advantage of the jobs being created on their doorsteps.

The centre will complement centres in Lewisham and Lambeth that will focus on related skills. Developers Lendlease have agreed to house the centre at Elephant Park, the new name for the regenerated Heygate Estate site at Elephant and Castle.

Lendlease is working with Southwark on the £1.5bn regeneration scheme on 28 acres of land in Elephant. Between now and 2025 the scheme will deliver nearly 3000 new energy efficient homes, over 50 shops, restaurants and bars, a brand new park, and over 1,600 new trees.

As well as training residents aged over eighteen, the centre will also be the base for Southwark Works and other employment specialists.

Schools will also be allowed to visit to learn about the importance of

construction.

The planning application for the skills centre has been submitted to Southwark Council. If given the go ahead, building is expected to begin in the autumn and a modular centre open in early 2016. An outdoor area for construction and plant training is being provided from the end of 2015 until 2018 for specialist training courses.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “With our own commitment to building 11,000 new council homes as well as the regeneration schemes on Elephant and Castle, Canada Water and Aylesbury, we are seeing a significant level of construction work available in the borough. This is even higher when we look over our borders to neighbouring

boroughs with projects like Vauxhall/Nine Elms.

“Between us, the three boroughs have more construction work happening over the next few years than the Olympics or Crossrail, and we need to make sure our residents have the best opportunities to make the most of the benefits this work brings, especially job creation. The construction skills centre will be

central to that providing the right training and employment support to pretty much guarantee work in this blossoming industry.

“The centre is also part of our aim for a better further education offer in Southwark tying together the practical skills we need in our borough, with an employer led approach and building better general employability skills.”

A TOE-tapping rock’n’roll charity event raised a staggering £14,250 for London Air Ambulance last week.

The extravaganza, held outside the Old Bank pub in the Blue last Sunday, was “absolutely fantastic”, according to organiser Julie O’Sullivan.

The Queen Victoria landlady said: “It was great, and I can’t thank all the people who helped and donated enough. We raised an incredible amount for a fantastic cause.”

The day featured tribute performances to a selection of music legends, including Elvis, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. There were also food and drink tents, activities, games, a disco and karaoke.

All money raised went towards the London Air Ambulance, the lifesaving charity that serves the ten million people who live, work and travel within the M25.

Simon Hughes, former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, attended and helped promote the event.

He said: “We all owe a huge thanks to Julie O’Sullivan for coming up with the idea for helping the London Air Ambulance here in Bermondsey.

The helicopter and crews which come five times a day to save lives in London deserve our 100 per cent support, and Bermondsey last week threw a bit more money into the kitty to keep help them keep on with their lifesaving work.”

MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark T IS great to have a column as the new MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

It has been an eventful eleven weeks since the election – which was a big event in itself locally, after three decades of the same MP. I'm proud and pleased to now represent our fantastic part of London in Parliament and I'm very grateful to the more than 22,000 people who voted Labour on 7th May. My predecessor, Simon Hughes, has since received a knighthood and I'm glad his contribution has been recognised. I have seen him since the election and have received outstanding casework from his office so that I could continue helping local people.

I think people chose change here not out of a personal grievance with the local MP, but out of a desire for a political change at national level. The Lib Dems had become part of the problem and policies like the Bedroom Tax and the tuition fees hike hit thousands of local people sadly.

The new Tory Government has sadly indicated it will continue some policies – like the Bedroom Tax – but have announced a new spate of measures that they denied they’d pursue before the election. Their plans could see Bermondsey’s child poverty levels rise – and would mean local people with cancer, Parkinsons or Downs Syndrome lose £30 per week in support. Labour want to see the apprenticeships programme brought forward that is in the Welfare Bill; apprenticeships is something Southwark Labour have already championed. But I hope the Tories back down on other cuts that would do so much damage to people here.

Winning back Bermondsey and Old Southwark for Labour was brilliant, but on a night my party performed badly nationally.

I'd like to have been part of a Labour Government able to deliver our agenda.

Instead I am in Opposition where it is harder to make as much of a difference.

But I intend to help through other routes.

I’ve already supported hundreds of people through casework and I'm working with local businesses, charities and community groups as I have as a councillor for five years. It was fantastic to see Southwark Brewing last week for instance [pictured above with Peter Jackson at Southwark Brewing on Druid Street] – and I look forward to helping them get a guest beer on tap in Parliament soon. It was also a nice coincidence to re-open a flower garden with Kate Hoey MP and discover that the chair of the Friends of Kennington Park used to be a civil servant and served as Private Secretary to none other than former Bermondsey Labour MP, Bob Mellish.

We’re slowly losing our traditional family pubs

I FEEL sad that we are slowly losing the traditional family pub.

I went into the new done up Gregorian on Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, yesterday to have a drink and I must say I was very disappointed.

It just seems to be a gastro pub now with no atmosphere. The interior is awful, the bar is so much smaller, there is a wall round by the gents where you used to walk all the way around the pub and to top it all a huge stuffed seagull mounted up.

And at £13.20p for two drinks I will most certainly avoid this place again.

Stop using the term ‘affordable housing’

BOTH YOUR editorial and Peter John’s comments (‘My Conscience is clear’ Southwark News, 16th July 2015) suffer from vagueness in one vital respect.

Both of you have got to stop using the term affordable housing.

Like the word community, it’s regularly used by politicians of all parties and national and local media and it has become quite meaningless. All references to affordable rent levels should be expressed in terms of pounds and pence.

We are in desperate need of a clear approach to affordable rents. I suggest that a person or family housing costs should amount to know more than 25% of their income and that thus a weekly affordable rent for properties should be 25% of the weekly living wage for London. This would

The rent levels of larger properties can be calculated on a similar basis.

More fundamentally, we need to recognise we are living within a broken and unsustainable economic model. We need to have a debate on land and rent, money and debt because continuing on the current prevailing path will only lead to further crashes and destruction of the only planet we have to live on.

WELCOME NEWS from Cllr Mark Williams that Labour is supporting the Bakerloo extensions.

I could mention that Liberals first publicly backed the original Elephant-Denmark Hill-Peckham Rye plan in the mid-1970s.

Or that since then Liberal Democrats have proposed what I have dubbed the Southwark Circle

These unions are against driverless trains, they’re against turning dead ticket offices into thriving retail units, now they’re against the night tube. They hate that the transport system is evolving and they oppose every money saving or revenue raising idea; ideas which would help lower fares and improve journeys for passengers. This lot, with their anti-progressive attitudes, are only fast tracking their way to extinction.

This majority Conservative government needs to go further to protect workers and passengers from union blackmail. Strike thresholds do not go far enough. We have an opportunity to ban strikes altogether on public transport. Of course, workers’ concerns need to be heard, that’s why strikes should be replaced with a New York Style, independent, judge-led mediation process.

Dr Know - ‘Don’t assume you’re past it’

T

HIS MONTH across England we are talking about breast cancer and women over 70.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in England with around 41,200 women diagnosed each year – of which around a third are aged 70 and over – so never assume that you’re past it.

The current campaign is to remind all women, but particularly those over 70, that a lump is not the only sign of breast cancer - if you see any change to your nipples, skin or the shape of your breasts it is important to get it checked out.

Most women now know that it is important to see their GP if they find a lump in their breast, but you may not be aware that there are other things to look out for too, including: a change in the size or shape of one or both breasts; discharge from either of your nipples; a lump or swelling in either of your armpits or dimpling on the skin of your breasts. For women over 70 it may be easy to dismiss some of these symptoms as just being down to age, but they could be early warning signs of breast cancer – so don’t ignore them. You can find a full list of symptoms on the NHS choices website www.nhs.uk.

If you are aged 70 or over you are still entitled to NHS breast screening every 3 years – you just need to make your own appointment. Currently the NHS Breast Screening Programme saves an estimated 1400 lives each year in England. A star comes down

Burt Bacharach has been one of the most honoured and successful composers for six decades, and continues to inspire and influence.

In 2010 the composer met the singer Kyle Riabko in a studio while recording his new material and this is where it all starts. Riabko asks Bacharach to listen to some tapes he made of Burt’s work and over more than three years growing and polishing the idea, finally in December 2013 What’s It All About: Bacharach Reimagined is on stage in New York.

IN RECENT years Bermondsey has become the hub for food excellence with its pockets of haute cuisine forming in Bermondsey Street, Borough and Shad Thames. Tentazioni, tucked away in Mill Street, is a restaurant that augments that badge of pride and has, in fact, been at the front of that march of progress for many years, writes Michael Holland...

Based in an old tin factory that my nan used to work in, the restaurant makes full use of its industrial past with bare brick walls, metal joists and wooden beams prominent. The dazzlingly white linen and sparkling glass on the tables jumps out from the stained oak floors.

Me and mum were offered water and the cocktail menu when we arrived, but we opted for a cold Italian beer. Getting through that Jamaica Road Friday night traffic is thirsty work.

The list of starters made my mouth water: ‘I could dine just on these,’ I said, while struggling to make my mind up.

‘I’m having the calves sweetbreads,’ said the lady who doesn’t dither!

Owner Riccardo Giacomini, looking extremely dapper, came over to say hello and mum’s eyes lit up (I can’t stop meself flirting with Italian men,’ she whispered). ‘How are your sweetbreads?’ she asked him. I almost spluttered beer all over the table!

Our waiter Matteo laid before us two little dishes - compliments of the chef - of Sweetcorn Soup with Basil and Crispy Pancetta. ‘I don’t even like sweetcorn,’ mumbled mum as she drained the last drop.

When our first course arrived the sweetbreads were actually melt in the mouth delicious, beautifully presented, layered between crisp pastry. I had the Crayfish Ravioli in Shellfish Broth. Just saying those words is enough to tell you how nice it was, though I would have liked the pasta to be a little less al dente, but that’s because I’m not Italian, I had to stop myself from lifting the bowl up to my mouth to get the last drop of liquor and if mum wasn’t there to give me a clump I would’ve done. As I contemplated licking the bowl or not licking the bowl two live lobsters were taken to another table for the diners to choose their winner. My money was on the big one.

My Yellow Fin Tuna in a Sesame Crust was a work of pure genius. Coated in sesame and seeds then quickly seared so the inside remains pink and tender, this dish was deeelish!

We had ordered fish for our main course so Matteo suggested a Pecorino, a white wine from Abruzzo, the area where he hails from. ‘I’ve been to Italy,’ exclaimed Mum. ‘Deed you like it, Signora?’

‘Rome. And I saw the Pope,’ she boasted.

‘You musta come to Lazio,’ said the handsome young man.

‘Will you be there?’

‘Yes, er,’ I butted in. ‘We’ll have the Pecorino.’

Mum then went on to tell me of her Italian adventures: the bus driver that would ogle her whenever

she was on his bus, and the smart widower that always asked her to dance. “I must book up to go back there,’ she murmured wistfully.

Our fish arrived just in the nick of time, and looked absolutely fantastic. Mum’s Dover Sole, a rather overrated dish I think, looked lovely with an accompaniment of huge capers and Sautéed Potatoes.

When she was done there was just the bare bones of that fish left on the plate.

Matteo, was spot on, this was a lovely wine, and mum had the lion’s share. Being in this place where her mother once worked she began reminiscing about her mum, and her cousin Beryl, and assorted aunts and uncles, which stopped her flirting with the Italian Stallions that kept topping her glass up.

The best moment of the night was when we perused the dessert menu and there was one called ‘Onore a Barry’(Honour to Barry), and she had just been talking about a family friend of the same name. ‘I’ll have that,’ she told our waiter, ‘as it has meringue in it, and I love a bit of meringue, don’t you?’ she enquired of the young man. He told us that it had been named in honour of the recently deceased Barry Albin-Dyer whose favourite dessert it was.

What a nice touch.

It was a Raspberry Sorbet, Meringue and Whipped Cream affair that Mum found was a delightful end to a glorious meal.

I had the Tentazioni Sundae, a conglomeration of just about everything good, all in a tall glass.

But it wasn’t the end as Matteo urged us to have a dessert wine of his choosing that was made from the oldest grapes in Italy, and this, truly, was a fine end to our Friday feast.

Tentazioni is modern Italian cooking at its best. The chef is

innovative and uses edible flowers in many dishes to add colour and a twist to the norm. It is a place to celebrate special occasions or somewhere for an inexpensive lunch (£11.95 for 2 courses), or a Sunday treat for the family (£36 for 3 courses, with free wine and kids eat for free).

THE TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING ACT 1990 AND THE ACQUISITION OF LAND ACT 1981 1.Notice is hereby given that the London Borough of Southwark, in exercise of the powers of the confirming authority under the above Acts, on 21st July 2015 confirmed the London Borough of Southwark (Elmington Estate Site D) Compulsory Purchase Order 2015 made by it. No objections to the order were received within the permitted period or any that were received were withdrawn and consequently notification was given by the Secretary of State for the Department for Communities and Local Government that the power to confirm the order may be exercised by the acquiring authority in accordance with Section 14A of the Acquisition of Land Act 1981.

PART 1 FORM OF STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS II AND III OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981 Power to make general vesting declaration 1.

The London Borough of Southwark (hereinafter called the Acquiring Authority) may acquire any of the land described in the Schedule hereto by making a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981. This has the effect, subject to paragraph 4 below, of vesting the land in the Acquiring Authority at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below. A declaration may not be made before the end of a period of two months from the first publication of a notice which includes this statement except with the consent in writing of every occupier of the land affected.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2.

As soon as may be after the Acquiring Authority make a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in any notice. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a further period begins to run. This period, which must be not less than 28 days, will be specified in the declaration. On the first day after the end of this period (“the vesting date”) the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraph 4, vest in the Acquiring Authority together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it.

Every person on whom the Acquiring Authority could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, ie a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The later expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that the Acquiring Authority may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 3 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than 14 days from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

Every person who, if a general vesting declaration were made in respect of all the land comprised in the order (other than land in respect of which notice to treat has been given), would be entitled to claim compensation in respect of any such land, is invited to give information to the authority making the declaration in the prescribed form with respect to his name and address and the land in question. The relevant prescribed form is set out below.

TWO VISITING Aussie cricket sides tasted victory and defeat when they took on Dulwich Cricket Club last week.

Last Wednesday two teams from Sydney Cricket Club and Ground (SCG) came to Southwark to take on Dulwich teams, and mirroring the main Ashes show both sides picked up a win each over two games.

DULWICH HAMLET and Fisher FC fans can start putting their travel plans for the new season in place after the publication of the 2015-16 fixtures in the last week.

Hamlet will get their third season in the Ryman Premier League underway on Saturday August 8 when Canvey Island come to Champion Hill.

Fisher, who will ground share with Dulwich for the first part of next season, will travel to Deal Town on the same day before playing their first home fixture two days later, a Monday night game against Cray Valley.

A bumper crowd could come to Dulwich on Boxing Day when Kingstonian visit to take on Hamlet, whilst Fisher will travel that day to take on local rivals Beckenham Town.

The Usideme family celebrated two tennis victories this week with Joshua taking first place at the Virgin Active (VA) Surrey under ten 10 tournament and older sister Chelsea winning the London Postal tournament.

The older sibling came out on top in the final held at the National Tennis Centre in the Girls under twelve category.

Mukthar Andu, ten, also continued his impressive run of form by winning the BA Imperial College under fourteen competition, dropping only two games, as well as the same age group section in a tournament held at VA Croydon where he lost just eight games in four matches.

Michael Mhangami competed at a Tennis Europe under fourteen event in Edinburgh having to battle through a series of qualifiers to reach the main draw.

In the first round he defeated the number two seed and followed this up with a second win before eventually losing out in the Quarter Finals.

In the London Youth Games event at Crystal Palace Southwark’s under eighteen team came third, losing to eventual winners Wandsworth.

Closer to home the Southwark City Tennis Club championships enters its final week. Over 100 competitors are competing in junior and senior events.

The Finals day is this Saturday, starting at 10am, and the event is open to the public to watch.

The England player showed why he had got his call up recently as he hit an unbeaten 122 off 64 balls against Somerset at the Kia Oval last Friday.

Supported by new opening partner Kumar Sangakkara, 31 off 24 balls, and Rory Burns, 46 off 33 balls, the home side posted 208 thanks in a large part to the half a dozen sixes that Roy spanked home.

MILLWALL LIONESSES fell to their fourth defeat in as many games on Sunday when a solitary goal saw them lose out to Yeovil Ladies.

Natasha Knapman headed in the game’s only goal from Sarah Wiltshire’s cross in front of a crowd of 722 as the Lady Glovers stay third in the Women’s Super League Division Two table.

Meanwhile their latest loss leaves the Lionesses in seventh place in the ten team second tier of the Women’s game.

“We got what we deserved,” said Millwall boss Dan Mlinar. “We were pathetic in the first half and I don’t think that’s too harsh a word.

“We lacked heart, we lacked grit, we lacked determination; it just wasn’t a Millwall performance.”

Millwall’s top scorer looking to bounce straight back

THIS TIME last season, Lee Gregory was acclimatising to his first pre-season as a professional footballer.

The 26-year-old signed from nonleague Halifax under Ian Holloway before the start of the 2014-15 season and went on to score nine goals in a debut campaign that ended in relegation.

With Millwall one of the favourites with the bookies for promotion back to the Championship this year, the Lions top scorer, who will again set his own personal aims, has said, in no uncertain terms there is only one acceptable team goal.

“The team aim is promotion — nothing less.” Gregory said.

“I want to score as much as I can but we need to bounce straight back up.

“I’ve got a goal figure in mind, which I won’t tell anybody but it’s something that I’ll be aiming for.

“I wanted to reach double figures last year, but that’s last season now, that’s gone. I need to get on with this season and make sure I can do it this year.”

This pre-season, however, hasn't started as Gregory would have liked, having picked up a slight knee injury early on since returning from the summer.

But the striker has found it a lot easier adjusting to pre-season compared to this time twelve months ago.

“To be honest, I’ve not found it as hard as last year,” Gregory explained.

“The training isn’t as hard now, and we’ve now got the games coming thick and fast.

“It was a little easier this season, I’ve just had to keep myself ticking over through the summer.

“I did get a little knee injury and missed out on a few days, but I’ll be back in training Thursday (today) and hopefully play against Stevenage, and just crack on.”

Gregory, who should be fit in time for Saturday’s penultimate pre-season fixture, was in philosophical mood when describing his mindset on his early season injury.

And he admitted he isn't a fan of watching from the sidelines and can’t wait to be back involved.

“It’s been very frustrating,” Gregory explained. “I hate watching football! I

would rather be playing, but it is one of those things.

“I’d rather get injured now than when the season comes and miss the more important games.

“Do it now, if I’m to get injured, get it out the way and look forward to the season.

“Hopefully I’ll go straight into playing. I want to play games. I want to get my fitness back up come Saturday at Stevenage and play as much as I can.”

The Championship was an unknown for Gregory last time out, and the striker is again venturing into a league where he lacks experience.

League One is a different beast to the Lions’ former setting of the Championship, but Gregory spells out what he and his teammates could be set to expect.

“I think going on the Bradford game - as that’s the only thing I have to go on - is that they were a big, strong and fit side, so in League One, I think we need to be matching teams like that.

“It’ll be a lot tougher than what everyone is thinking. I reckon, football wise, it won’t be as good as the Championship, but hopefully we can

step up.”

Scott McDonald (31), Ricardo Fuller (35), Stefan Maierhofer (32) and Gary Taylor-Fletcher (34) were all Gregory’s senior strike-partners in what was an ageing frontline of players in the twilight of their careers.

Now with the likes of Aiden O’Brien (21), John Marquis (23) and Jamie Philpot (18), this season is the polar opposite for the 26-year-old, who is now the most s e n i o r forward at the club.

And Gregory is relishing the inclusion of the youngsters into the first-team under boss Neil Harris.

“The gaffer wants to bring the youth through,” Gregory said. “So there will be a lot of enthusiasm with the

lads coming up.

“It will be good for them and the club because they know they can play, they aren’t just here to make the numbers up.”

Den striker wants to kick-on after recent flurry of loan moves

JOHN MARQUIS, by his own admission, hasn’t had the best of times at Millwall in recent years.

With various loan moves under his belt, he has seen his Lions career be a little stop-start.

The 23-year-old, however, feels that this is the season that could be the springboard to greater things.

Portsmouth, Torquay, Northampton and Gillingham are but a few of the loan teams the Lewisham born striker has been at in the last couple of seasons, on top of that, he has made over 40 appearances for Millwall.

And by his own acknowledgment, if he isn’t to succeed at the club this time around, Marquis will lay the blame firmly at his own door.

“If I don’t take this chance then it would be down to be.” Marquis said. “I believe in my ability and I feel I’m ready now.

“I’ve played enough games to develop and I’m really ready to crack on this season and show everyone at Millwall and everyone outside looking in, that I’m ready to play now and prove myself.

“There has obviously been a lot of change while I was out on loan - the manager, of course, being a big one.

“There’s been a big turnaround in players with a younger group being assembled.

“It’s just how football clubs change, I’m just happy to be back and involved now and hopefully the manager believes in me. I hope I can repay his faith in me.”

Marquis spent the majority of the second half of last season away from SE16, but he is relishing the chance to be in contention for a starting berth with his boyhood club.

Despite Gillingham having heavy interest in his signature during the close season, the striker decided to pen a new one-year-deal.

And with a younger squad now in place, the academy graduate feels he has the necessary experience to leave his mark on the club.

“I’m really happy to be back,” Marquis said. “I went out on loan and played some games last season which I needed.

“I just want to get the season started now, crack on and do well for Millwall.

“I did well at Gillingham and there were some options there for me, but as soon as the gaffer was put in charge I knew he didn’t have to sell the club to me.

“I know what it takes to play for Millwall, it's a fantastic club and as soon as I knew he was in charge, I knew I was going to be given a chance here.”

He added: “The squad is a lot younger and I’m not vastly experienced myself, but I’ve played a fair amount of games on loan in the last few seasons.

“I’ve got over 100 league games under my belt and now and I just feel, within the group, I’m ready to step up and take a little bit more responsibility and play.

“I wouldn't say I feel like one of the most experienced, there are still quite a few more experienced than myself here.

“I will hopefully become a regular and score lots of goals.

“I’ve been here a long time now and I haven’t played as much as I would have liked to, however, I’m here, I’m back and I just want to play.

“It’s good to have a young group of Millwall players coming through.

“I think it is what the cub needs and we also need experience. I think the balance is right, and taking that into the season.

“It’ll be good to hopefully get some game time.”

Marquis feels early on in his career, being thrust into Championship football when he himself admits he wasn't ready, may have affected his development somewhat.

But the forward doesn't feel the hesitancy to loan him out earlier in his career has stunted his development as a player.

“I wouldn't say it stopped it from progressing,” Marquis explained. “I had come into the squad and I was very inand-out of the team whist injuries also didn’t help me.

“Then I was sort of a squad player, whereas it would have been a little bit better if I was further away from the squad and totally out of it and gone out on loan.

“Everyone takes a different path to get where they are.

“I’ve had to go out on loan and I appreciate what I have back here at Millwall.

“Now I’m back, I’m hungry and I just want to score loads of goals next season.”

FOR MOST of last Saturday’s game against AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow it looked as though the traveling support congregated in the Nonshim Stand would have little to sing about come the end of Millwall’s second pre-season friendly in five days.

Despite seeing their side inundating the Dons’ box with corner after corner, it looked like the loudest cheer they would raise would be for Dons striker Lyle Taylor when he got his feet in a tangle and knocked the ball wide as he attempted to trick his way past Tony Craig to work a shooting opportunity.

They had also watched striker Aiden O’Brien slump to the turf in the 12th minute before hobbling to the touchline where it was evident he was in trouble. The former Ireland underage striker was being stretchered to the dressing room when Taylor capitalised on a lapse in concentration in the centre of defence – probably partly caused by the delay while O’Brien was receiving treatment – to race clear of Millwall’s high defensive line and calmly roll the ball past an exposed David Forde.

Dozens of set-piece opportunities came and went without any reward until injury time and that the players made their way off the field to chants of, “He’s one of our own” owed much to the away side’s persistence.

The signature ditty that came to define former Millwall loanee Harry Kane’s rise in the space of six months from back-up striker at his club to an England international goalscorer said a lot about the relative absence of such a commodity these days and makes the new direction manager Neil Harris is attempting to take the club almost a nostalgic counterpoint in an era of talented home-grown youngsters being snapped up early by an elite group at the top of England’s football tree.

The last-minute equaliser had been fashioned by the dangerous right boot of another product of the youth set-up, Jack Powell, and turned past Dons goalkeeper James Shea by Sid Nelson, the object of that chant in the away end.

After the difficulties of the last few seasons it’s probably about time that Millwall fans had a local hero or two to shout about.

Where once the fabric of even the most successful sides was woven from players with deep connections to the club and surrounding areas,

now the chant has come to represent its rarity as much as it represents the natural desire to want to celebrate local boys making it at their local club.

Millwall maintain unbeaten pre-season campaign thanks to last-gasp header

VELLER S DESERVED relegation, it will, as ever, be the results that determine the mood that manifests in the stands.

It will take time for the players to get used to what Powell said afterwards was a “simplified” approach and there are two more

pre-season friendlies to come before the League One opener at Shrewsbury on August 8.

It was evident from early on that Millwall’s tactics were to try to pin their opponents back with direct balls into the feet of the strikers and

down the channels and hope that Onyedinma and Joe Martin could fashion crossing opportunities from wide areas.

O’Brien and Marquis had been ruggedly attempting to disrupt the Dons defence in the opening ten

minutes and there was evidence of a burgeoning strike partnership potentially blossoming before the former’s afternoon was brought to a premature end. Several link-ups brought semi-openings but that element of threat reduced when O’Brien went off.

It could have been worse for the 21-year-old when Barry Fuller trod on his foot causing him to roll his ankle, but it was still a serious blow and it was confirmed earlier in the week that he will miss at least six weeks with ruptured ligaments.

Kris Twardek, such a lively presence when he was introduced during the 2-2 draw at Bromley five days earlier, came on again and took up a position wide on the right. He did well to cut inside Will Nightingale to chip to the back post for Marquis whose header was blocked, and he also teed up Byron Webster in the box on 37 minutes for a shot that James Shea tipped over. That was the closest Millwall came in the first half and there is little doubt that plenty of work will be done on the training ground on trying to convert set-piece chances into tangible reward.

A wild shot back towards the corner flag from Twardek after another Shaun Williams’ corner had floated over the area to him also illustrated that a bit more composure is needed when a goal opportunity presents itself.

Onyedinma moved inside to play off Marquis when Twardek came on but he found less space than he had been afforded at Bromley in which to threaten the Dons back four. He could perhaps have done better at one point in the second half when he attacked from deep and strode into the area before being dispossessed, but more sharpness will come with more first-team exposure.

Harris had set Millwall up to pressure the home side as much as possible in their half of the field, but Neal Ardley has two quick, physical and alert strikers in Taylor and Tom Elliott and when that lapse came just after O’Brien’s exit, the former was able to put his side ahead.

Powell was an immediate probing presence when he came on with 25 minutes left and several whipped deliveries caused panic in a Wimbledon side that at that stage was down to nine men after Callum Kennedy and Adebayo Azeez had been forced off and all the substitutes used.

In the 94th minute Powell’s delivery again had plenty of pace and, after Mark Beevers headed on, Nelson was able to apply an accurate finish into the bottom corner to leave the away fans thinking of a brighter future ahead.

think, other than the three or four-minute spell in the first half, where Wimbledon were quite direct and obviously scored the goal, we dominated.

“And other than a 90-second to two-minute spell in the second half, where they had a couple of corners and efforts on goal, I thought we controlled the game.

“We just weren't as clinical as I would like but that comes with time.

“I never used to score goals in pre-season but found the net during the season and that'll eventually come from all over the park.”

“I'm pleased we scored, the chances we created came from set-plays. We looked a threat and it just becomes the desire to want to score the goal. Sid Nelson showed us that.

“I was pleased with all the young players when they came on, that’s the crop of youngsters we have. I think both teams almost finished like an U21s game but I was pleased with all the young boys.

“Even in the first half we had chances, we could have scored a couple of goals.

“The game against Bromley, where we worked extremely hard before the game, was not going to be the sharpest exercise, it was about getting minutes in the legs.

Today was a little bit fresher but, as you can see, we still have work to do.

“The important thing is that we need to learn from the little mistakes we are making and getting punished for and make sure they won’t happen during the season.

“That’s two games in a row we’ve conceded one opportunity and both teams have scored. We need to cut out those little errors and keep concentrating on what we are doing.

“We also need to be a little bit more clinical in and around the area, while making slightly better decisions in wider areas.”

HARRIS: STRIKER SEARCH CONTINUES

MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris has reiterated his intention to sign another striker ahead of the new season.

The Lions kick-off their League One campaign away to Shrewsbury on August 8 with only Lee Gregory and John Marquis as the two most senior forwards fit.

Aiden O’Brien was stretchered off in Saturday’s draw with Wimbledon and scan results revealed the extent of the injury, with the 21-year-old set to miss four to six weeks of action.

And Harris knows he needs another front man, with O’Brien’s injury beaming a bright spotlight down on the situation.

"We're looking to get someone in,” Harris told the News. “I think that's clear.

“Everybody has been asking me

about it and I've not been shy in admitting we are after another striker.

I'd ideally have liked someone in yesterday!

"Aiden's injury has now highlighted that we need someone else.

“I'm not going to be bullied or rushed in taking someone for the sake of it. That's not what it's all about. It's about getting the right player to benefit us.

“We're making inroads, working extremely hard to find the right player. We will keep pushing that.

“It would have been nice to have something done this week but, if I have to wait another week then so be it.”

With pre-season taking shape and clubs up and down the country getting their teams ready and recruited for the marathon that is the English league season, Harris said the next two weeks were pivotal for players and clubs.

And Webster has received a ringing endorsement by Harris, and looks set to be in his plans for the forthcoming campaign after an indifferent start to his Lions career.

“Byron, I thought had a mixed start,” Harris said. “He did really well in some games and a couple of games he played in we lost and he got left out afterwards.

“A couple of games we got beat in, I thought he played well. Football is all about opinions.

“I would have liked him available at the end of last season to have been involved, but I couldn't as part of the loan agreement with Yeovil.

“When we had the chance to bring him back, I always wanted to with a view to have him stake a place for the team.”

Harris cited Webster’s leadership qualities as one of the main reasons the defender was handed a return to The Den. And the Lions boss hasn’t ruled out Webster, or other candidates, for vice captaincy should newly appointed club captain Tony Craig be unavailable.

“He's come back in and he's had a real go,” Harris explained. “I think he's enjoying being back here and with the competition for places at centre back, I'm quite fortunate.

“It's important the group have a leader and the dressing room has a voice.

Someone who the players look to and trust, Tony Craig fits the bill.

“There are some real good guys in there with big spirits. There are some young guys, like Sid Nelson, who talk really well.

“If Tony [Craig] isn’t available for any game, then I would have a real decision to make because, there are four or five guys who would be really suitable.”
