Around half Southwark’s EU citizens still haven’t applied for settled status to remain in the UK after 2020, despite a huge council-led campaign to ensure their right to stay.

Southwark is believed to be home to 41,000 non-Irish EU citizens, who will need to apply to the EU settlement scheme to ensure they are able to stay in the country after the UK’s withdrawal is complete.

According to the latest Home Office statistics up until September last year, 23,628 people in Southwark had applied for the scheme so far.

On top of online advice and support the council is also running a walk-in service to help EU citizens with their applications.

“Brexit preparedness”, the specialist panel tasked with mitigating key risks confirms its key focus continued to be “providing certainty to those citizens and ensuring their rights are protected”.

It says a social media push, advertising and dedicated website page saw numbers jump from 12,680 applying by June 2019 to 23,620 by November.

But the council also says the majority of these people are between 18 and 65; with children and pensioners underrepresented.

The task ahead will be ensuring vulnerable residents are not at risk after the transition period ends. Plans to avoid thousands being left with uncertain status include a series of roadshows around the borough this year to encourage more people to apply before the deadline.

David Noakes, in an “EU Citizens Motion” submitted to the council’s latest assembly meeting, said: “After three years of living in limbo, EU nationals’ homes and livelihoods are in danger of being threatened by the further uncertainty brought about by the outcome of the general election in December 2019.

“Another Windrush-like scandal could be unfolding right before the eyes of this council and we must not be passive observers to it.”

Around ten per cent of the borough’s total workforce is from the EU. Other key council concerns are staff shortages and recruitment dips for keyworker roles in the NHS and other public services.

But delays and confusion over the deal yet to be thrashed out by negotiators has prevented the council from identifying where best to plug the gaps. Cllr Victoria Mills is in charge of a £300,000 Brexit fund to support residents affected, and £2 million “risk reserve” in case of economic upheaval.

Council papers explain: “No immediate pressures have been identified and the full extent of any impact and subsequent call on these funds may not be fully known until after the exit date and well into the transition period,” while also warning that there is still a possibility of a no-deal Brexit if an agreement isn’t reached by the end of the transition period.

Council to keep the EU flag flying Town hall bosses have vowed to continue flying the EU flag from its headquarters on Tooley Street, despite the UK leaving the EU at 11pm on Friday, writes Josh Salisbury...

The move is a “clear show of solidarity” with the borough’s 41,000 European residents, said officials.

However, nearby City Hall has removed its EU flag a Mayoral spokesperson told the News.

“As far as Southwark is concerned EU nationals from the 27 EU member states remain part of our diverse and vibrant communities,” said Cllr Victoria Mills, who holds the Brexit portfolio.

“EU nationals are our brothers and sisters, our partners, parents and neighbours.

“They have settled here in Southwark and make a huge contribution to the growth, prosperity, culture and community of our borough.

“For Southwark we are crystal clear that this is not a matter for debate and EU residents should never be treated no less favourably as they are at present.”

The decision has been welcomed by opposition Liberal Democrat councillor, Victor Chamberlain.

“Delighted to have sought assurances and got confirmation that the EU Flag will continue to fly from [Southwark Council] offices after tomorrow,” he said on Thursday last week.

Six months on and still no news on extra police officers There are still no details of the number of extra police officers promised for Southwark, nearly six months after plans for 20,000 new officers were announced last July, writes Katherine Johnston...

Last Tuesday in the House of Commons, policing minister, Kit Malthouse, was unable to confirm how many would be coming to the borough from the extra coppers pledged by Boris Johnson last year.

Malthouse responded to questioning from Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle, but was only able to say: “Southwark will receive or the Met will receive its share of those police officers, alongside whatever the Mayor choses to do in augmenting the Met’s finances.”

Since cuts to the Met from 2010 onward, Southwark has lost more than 400 police officers and police community support officers.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Florence Nightingale’s lamp, her medicine box of supplies and an audio recording of her voice will be among the exhibits displayed next month to mark two centuries since her birth.

The major exhibition at the Florence Nightingale museum in the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital will showcase 200 objects relating to the world-famous nurse, to show “a visionary reformer.”

It pledges to explore both Florence’s heroic role during the Crimean War, but also the following thirty years of her life, which saw her revolutionise nursing while suffering from depression.

“Our exhibition is designed to surprise people whose knowledge of Florence Nightingale doesn’t go much beyond the ‘Lady with the Lamp,” said David Green, director of the museum.

“She was a powerful combination of fierce intelligence, acute scientific and analytical acumen, practical nous, the art of persuasion, human warmth and empathy, restlessness and irritability, and almost superhuman levels of energy.”

Born in 1820, Nightingale is best known as “the Lady with the Lamp” for helping soldiers during the Crimean War. She had been working at a Harley Street nursing home when she learned of the horrific conditions facing British army soldiers in their Crimean War hospital base at Scutari.

Nightingale led a team of nurses to bring order, cleanliness and new supplies to the wards where the wounded were being treated, and it earned her national fame as a result.

Residents complained of a spate of nut sellers cashew-ing in without permission

josh@southwarknews.co.uk borough Coppers have launched a crackdown on unlicensed street vendors selling caramelised nuts and peanuts near to Tower Bridge.

Police began their operation by Tower Bridge on January 31, after fed-up residents complained of a spate of nut sellers cashew-ing in without obtaining correct permissions.

However, the following fifty years of Nightingale’s achievements are often glossed over, say curators – despite this being the period of her life where she transformed healthcare.

Nightingale was passionate about using stats, research and evidence to physically change the design and structure of hospitals and their working practices in ways still used today, including at St Thomas’.

“Nut seller moved on and given a strong verbal warning for now! All documented for first phase of prosecution,” said officers from London Bridge and West Bermondsey on Twitter on the first day of operation, dubbed ‘Nick the Nut No More.’

But less than twenty-four hours later, the same nut seller went back to the same spot to carry on trading, said police, despite the warning.

“Today, the same trader returned, so did Southwark MPS and Borough and Bankside MPS to report the trader and seize the peanut cart,” said officers from Borough and Bankside police.

A second vendor in the same place the following day was also reported by police and had his items seized.

“I will fill another container if I have to until these people understand it ain’t happening any longer!” said a London Bridge officer.

Police and Trading Standards have previously shut down street vendors

selling the nuts outside Blackfriars, with both trolleys being seized in “‘Fly traders’ or people selling goods on the streets without a licence create obstructions for pedestrians and are unfair competition to legitimate traders and businesses,” states Southwark Council guidance.

“This illegal activity ranges from sellers of counterfeit DVDs to sellers of roasted peanuts. Illegal street traders aren’t tolerated and if caught, risk prosecution, a fine of £1000 and loss of all their goods. Without a licence, there is no way of knowing whether goods sold are safe, adds the guidance.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A second pedestrian has died within just three weeks on the same dangerous stretch of road in Peckham, just 48 hours after the details of long-delayed safety works were published by TfL.

A consultation on the plans is now open until March 12, giving road users the chance to have their say, but many are left questioning why it has taken so long to get this far when four people have died within a 100 metre section of Peckham Road and Peckham High Street since 2015.

As the News has reported, four pedestrians have died in road traffic collisions within six years. Seventy-sixyear-old great-grandmother Mary O’Leary died in September 2015 after being struck as she crossed the road toward the top of Rye Lane. She had lived in Peckham for more than 30 years.

Exactly two years later, in September 2017, 74-year-old Peter Allingham died after being hit by a lorry on September 4 at 10am as he crossed Peckham High Street. A Viking enthusiast and steam train driver, Allingham was a publican who was barman and assistant secretary of Peckham Liberal Club for three decades.

This year, Jason Bent was hit by an HGV on the afternoon of January 8, at the same site where Peter Allingham lost his life in 2017. Police say there have been no arrests and the driver was cooperating with inquiries.

Three weeks later, on January 30th, another male pedestrian died after being hit by a driver who later failed a roadside drug test in Kelly Avenue, at the junction of Peckham Road. No further details have been released by police.

Last year, over 70 pedestrians were killed in London, compared with 58 deaths in 2018. Peckham High Street was first identified as location for safety works in 2014 as it was believed to pose a high risk to pedestrians.

Plans to start a consultation on improvement works were announced in 2015, and due to take effect by 2017 but have been in limbo until now, much to the frustration of Southwark Council.

Local councillors have been lobbying for quicker action but are powerless to implement the changes as Peckham High Street is a TfL road.

A petition set up by residents to improve the road layout and install an island in the middle of the road for pedestrians crossing near Burger King, and for railings to be added on the central reservation to stop people from running across outside designated crossings, has been signed by 459 people.

On January 28 of this year, TfL confirmed it wants to work on a section of road between Basing Court and Mission Place.

This would add more pedestrian crossings and cycle crossings, and widening pavements. Depending on feedback from the public, work is expected to begin by the end of 2020.

The plans include lowering the speed limit to 20 mph as a person hit at 30mph is five times more likely to die than someone hit by a car travelling at 20.

Two new crossings would be added, including one between Peckham Square and Rye Lane, and another nearby. The changes aim to make it easier to walk from Peckham Library to Rye Lane, and to cycle via the Surrey Canal Path.

Existing crossings near Sumner Road and Bellenden Road would be widened

Another death in peckham, hours after tFl sets out long-delayed safety works and updated so cyclists can also cross more safely, and the pavement on the north side of Peckham High Street would be significantly widened to make more space for walkers and people stepping on and off buses.

Kerbs would be changed so the road becomes narrower, and the road surface raised, making it easier to cross and encouraging drivers to slow down as they approach.

But there are no new cycle lanes or segregated cycleways in the plans. In fact, illustrated designs show that near the junction with Rye Lane painted cycling lanes would be removed, and an existing central island also taken out.

Road safety campaigner Andrea Casalotti, from the Vision Zero London campaign to end road traffic fatalities, has criticised the plans saying TfL needs to either divert traffic to the much wider A2 or relocate shops elsewhere, as the pavements are too narrow for the congested road.

“Nobody denies that the solution to Peckham High Street is difficult,” she explains in an open letter to Heidi Alexander, London’s deputy mayor for transport.

“The street is a busy shopping street

with narrow pavements and is also used as a major arterial road. There are in other words irreconcilable demands.

One cannot have an arterial flow with vehicles driving up to 50 kph on a narrow shopping street.”

where he crossed, but we did expect that they would decide put barriers back up along the road.

“I remember when you couldn’t just walk out. There has to be some sort of restriction because that bus stop near Natwest is so congested and you have people rushing to try and catch the bus.”

Jason, who lived in Sydenham Hill with their parents, was a Peckham High Street regular. Tanya says he had likely crossed the same road several times the day he died and knew it well.

“We have no malice to the driver, we are not blaming him. He stopped and helped, and must be going through some serious things,” she says. An investigation is on-going.

Tanya says she and the family will campaign for stronger safety measures, but cannot yet bring herself to research the circumstances of the other three deaths since 2015.

“Something is wrong and it needs to be dealt with. People are walking right out even though there is a fatal collision sign.”

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk More than one hundred new trees will be planted across Southwark as part of plans to increase London’s tree canopy by ten per cent.

Last Wednesday London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced funding for 2,898 saplings to take root across the capital by the end of this March. A further 4,040 trees will be planted next winter.

“I’m doing everything in my power to make London zero-carbon and one of the greenest, most sustainable cities in the world,” he said.

“London’s trees are the lungs of our city and they can make a real difference improving quality of life in local neighbourhoods.”

The trees will be planted and maintained

by Southwark Council; which will also choose their locations.

The mayor has also given more than a million pounds toward 54 community projects aimed at caring for and expanding London’s green spaces.

The trust’s chief executive officer, Charlotte Gilsenan, said: “The Mayor of London’s Greener City Fund has enabled us to launch the Green Hub across north Lambeth and Southwark – a support network for groups or individuals with a determination to improve their local area through gardening.

“The Hub includes personal support alongside a programme of training and workshops to help people learn new horticultural skills and meet other gardeners in the area.

“The aim of the Hub is to empower people to improve their local spaces as well as contributing to the health and wellbeing of local communities.”

New fire safety doors on City estates New fire doors have been pledged on two Southwark estates run by the City of London Corporation, writes Josh Salisbury...

Bermondsey’s Avondale Estate residents and those on the City of London’s Southwark Estate will get replacement communal, front and ire escape doors with an “enhanced” fire resistance, says the Corporation.

The move was approved following a review of fire safety after the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

“The security of residents is our number one priority. We want all our residents to be safe and feel safe in

their homes,” said Randall Anderson, Chairman of the City Corporation’s Community and Children Services Committee.

The £9million refurb affects seven thousand residents in Corporation social housing across the capital, the body says.

“We have worked hard to enhance fire safety on our estates, and these new doors will increase protection and reassurance for thousands of Londoners,” added Mr Anderson.

The City Corporation has also agreed to fit fire sprinklers in all its social housing tower blocks by the end of this year.

An undercover test purchase of illegal skin lightening cream was carried out by Southwark Trading Standards, at Shaba Hair and Cosmetics on Rye Lane back on the 18 August 2018.

The test purchaser asked for the product, Caro White Lightening Beauty Cream, by name and it was fetched from the back of the shop. The test purchaser wore a covert camera and this identified the man at the till as Tasweer Iqbal. The cream was labelled as containing hydroquinone and analysis confirmed 4.3%.

Hydroquinone can cause skin thinning, uneven skin tone and texture, facial scarring and even increase pigment production in the skin.

It is banned in cosmetic skin lighteners throughout the EU and can cause dangerous long term health effects including cancer, and kidney, liver and nerve damage. It is also very dangerous to use when pregnant.

Further to the test purchase, Southwark Trading Standard conducted a raid at Shaba Hair & Cosmetics on Saturday

6 October 2018. Illegal skin lighteners were found concealed at the rear of the premises, hidden under the floorboards.

Some were on shelves in the store and others in plastic bags behind the sales counter.

In total, 1,129 products were seized and various samples were submitted for analysis. Seventeen of nineteen samples submitted were found to contain hydroquinone. The two that didn’t still failed on labelling requirements, as did all the others. The eight samples submitted for steroid checks were all found to be positive.

Iqbal, 45, who lives in Tottenham, pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to a 200 hour community order, to be completed within a year and he was found liable for half the costs: £3,843.

When sentencing, the judge talked about the aggravating features of the case.

These included the high financial gains, deliberate concealment of banned goods and the impact on the wider community, resulting from illegal labelling that left customers with no idea what they were applying to their skin.

She was also satisfied that Iqbal clearly knew exactly what he was doing, by virtue of the concealment of toxic goods and Southwark Council’s video footage of him selling illegal products, from under the counter.

The business was sentenced to pay the

other half of the costs: £3,843 and £20,000 in fines. Southwark Council will proceed to destroy all of the goods seized during the investigation.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “We have prosecuted Shaba Hair and Cosmetics on two previous occasions for supplying illegal and dangerous cosmetics to vulnerable people. The company and its directors have deliberately and systematically ignored the advice given

by Southwark Trading Standards and the court.

“This result shows that the court supports the council in condemning the practice of putting consumers at risk for financial gain. This is a message to other vendors to sell products that comply with the law and put consumer safety first.”

“The past three years have been challenging. Increasing costs and reduced footfall combined have created difficult trading conditions,” owner Mel Nugent wrote in a post on their website.

“The decision to close will end 26.5 years of trading on this site in East Dulwich.

“During this time I have met many, many wonderful people, made lifelong friends, I have seen couples meet, newborns become adults, and witnessed a fast-changing community.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk FilmFixers’ contract to run Southwark’s film office has been renewed for another term, fifteen years after taking over managing the borough’s TV and Film requests.

Although there have previously been concerns around how Southwark backdrops to TV dramas and films have fuelled negative perceptions of the borough’s estates, in recent years the company has worked closely with residents to pick productions they are happy hosting, and make sure TRAs feel the economic benefits.

Adisa Walker worked as a marshal in October of last year on location at the Aylesbury Estate – where she grew up - for the upcoming series of Netflix’s The Crown. The former Kingsdale School student studied visual effects productions at Escape Studios in 2018 and was put forward for the opportunity to work on set by Aylesbury-based charity, the Creation Trust.

"Working on the set of The Crown was amazing as I got a more in-depth

look at how filming for TV works and the amount of different people that are needed to make a single scene happen,” she said.

“It was really exciting to be right where the action was from the setting up and moving of equipment to the acting itself.

“Everyone onset was lovely and I was able to talk to a variety of people all with different roles and find out their unique paths into the industry.

“I found that quite valuable as it helped to remind that some industries have transferable skills and that there sometimes is more than one way to get into any given industry."

Other residents to marshal on set include Spaniard Rocio Lopez and Megan Bussey, both London College of Communications students who were employed on set of The Nevers – Joss Whedon’s upcoming HBO series - in Borough’s Trinity Church Square.

The production company also made what FilmFixers said was a “generous donation” to the residents’ association.

Recent shoots in Southwark include Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen; Ironbark, starring Benedict Cumberbatch; Disney’s Cruella, due for release in May 2021; and the new Bond film No Time To Die - expected to be released in April of this year.

Ten ‘nail bar’ kids in care

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Ten children believed to have been forced to work in nail bars across Southwark have been taken into care, as the council hopes they will gain asylum in the UK to stay safe from threats against them and their families.

The minors were first alerted to the authorities after Southwark Council’s licensing and trading standards conducted investigations into a number of nail bars in the borough suspected of using forced labour and trafficked workers, leading to police raids.

As the News has reported, nail bars are at the coalface of modern slavery, with traffickers hoping to exploit a

growing market for nail treatments and consumers who will turn a blind eye when paying cut-price.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care, said the children had been placed with foster carers who have experience supporting young people who have been trafficked or subjected to modern slavery.

“We are supporting all of these young people to seek asylum in the UK, as threats of persecution to themselves or family members, mean that they’ve expressed no interest in returning to their country of origin,” she told the News.

“We’ve helped them to access specialist immigration services that will enable them to make asylum applications. This will hopefully result

in their building a future here, in the UK. “In the longer term, we hope to continue working with these young people, introducing them to life in the UK through a strong foundation, within a family home. The aim is to help them to make a safe transition into adulthood.

“When children come into our care, we assess, support and help with their needs. These include accommodation, health, education, and emotional wellbeing; amongst others.

“We have introduced these children to specialist mental health services and a designated doctor, who specialises in children in local authority care. They are also supported by an education service from Southwark’s virtual school for children in our care.”

appeal for bermondsey carnival organiser

The popular annual event is familyfriendly day of music, dance and stalls attracting up to 10,000 people held in summer.

The successful applicant will receive £47,000 to run the event in Southwark Park, but council officials are encouraging applicants to add to the funds themselves.

“The Bermondsey Carnival is a wellestablished, one day, annual, free to attend, family event. It’s a festival of fun, music, dance and creativity,” states the

council’s appeal for organisers.

“Activities in the past have included a live music programme, children’s workshops, a funfair, a variety of food and drink concessions and trade and community/charity stalls.”

A string of conditions – including that the event be open to all, free for the public to attend and be appropriate for Southwark Park – aims to ensure the event will not be dissimilar to previous years.

The deadline for submissions is Friday February 7, and the commission will be awarded on February 21.

The event is expected to take place in June or July. More details can be found by searching ‘Bermondsey Carnival Commission’ on the Southwark Council website.

According to Latin Elephant, a charity supporting traders affected by the regeneration, around 60 businesses are yet to have signed for new premises.

At Southwark Council’s assembly meeting last week, campaigners called

on the council and Delancey to halt the closure until all traders had found future homes.

In a formal deputation, the Up the Elephant campaign listed demands, including that the centre stays open until all have been relocated, or given financial compensation, and that market traders are also eligible for rent reductions in their final few months at the shopping centre.

In response, Cllr Johnson Situ announced that £200,000 extra funding would be made available to traders, including those who are subletting. This is separate to more than £600,000 of funding provided by the developer.

In a formal statement sent to the News, Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for growth, development and planning, said: “We know this is an anxious time for traders and the council wants to make sure it is offering whatever support it can to help them find and move into new premises in and around the Elephant and Castle area.

“Many businesses have already been offered an affordable unit nearby but others are still worried about the future.”

Construction on the temporary retail space for dislocated Elephant and Castle traders has begun - as campaigners say 60 shopkeepers have yet to find new premises to move into when demolition begins.

As the News has reported, the shopping centre’s landlord and developer, Delancey, has announced its last day of trading will be at the end of July.

The 5,000 square foot pop-up Castle Square is expected to take around five

months to build, with traders able to move in this summer.

Those to have secured premises for the duration of the demolition and building work include La Bodeguita, the Columbian café, and Forever Hairdressing.

Delancey’s Diana Barranco, community director for the Elephant and Castle town centre, said: “Castle

Square will create a shopping destination at the heart of Elephant and Castle for the local community while the new town centre is being developed.

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Two Southwark men have been found guilty of being part of a gang that carried out a violent £4.1million jewellery robbery.

Ciro Troyano, 40, from Elephant and Castle and pal Oscar Hicks, also from Southwark, were found guilty last week of conspiracy to rob, alongside Lewisham man Camilo Carvajal, 39, and 48-year-old Lee Jason Gardner, of Tottenham.

The gang violently attacked and robbed a salesman for the American celebrity jeweller Le Vian in a carpark in Staines-upon-Thames, leaving him with injuries to his right eye, wrist and arm.

Kingston Crown Court heard how the men set upon the salesman after he’d parked his car on the first level of a carpark at around 8.20am on May 13.

He was opening the boot to take out a suitcase containing the precious jewellery when he was hit with such force he fell to the ground, before being repeatedly punched and kicked.

The gang tore off his watch, fracturing his wrist and lower arm.

The victim ran off, the court heard, to get help – and by the time he came back, the suitcase containing the millions-of-pounds-worth of jewellery was gone.

Footage from the carpark’s number plate scanners captured the gang’s black Mercedes C Class tearing through the exit barrier at speed shortly before the robbery.

The plates had been stolen earlier that week from a car in Lambeth, said police.

Using CCTV footage and witness statements, police were able to piece together the car’s journey in and out of Staines, alongside the four men going to-and-from the car prior to the robbery.

Olumuyiwa Rhoomes, aged 33, failed to pull over when Kent police officers on patrol indicated for him to stop in October, 2019.

Rhoomes, from Amelia Street, then drove through the Northfleet area at “high speed” and curb clipping.

He was seen overtaking another car despite oncoming traffic and nearly collided with a pedestrian.

Officers then witnessed him let go of the wheel and climb into the back seat of his grey Hyundai Tuscan while travelling at more

than 40 miles per hour, before the passenger jumped into the driving seat and pulled the car over.

He was arrested at the scene and charged with dangerous driving.

On Monday, January 27, he pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court and was jailed for 14 months and banned from driving for more than three years.

He will have to take an extended driving test to be able to drive again.

PC Tom Slocombe, the investigating officer, said: “Rhoomes put many lives at risk including his own when he drove at speed through residential streets in an attempt to avoid police.

“He showed a blatant disregard for other road users and it’s only luck that no one was hurt.”

Footage also showed that Gardner had travelled to Staines-uponThames on the same day to carry out a reconnaissance visit of the car park where the robbery took place.

Troyano was arrested in London in June and a search uncovered a phone, later confirmed as being the same one used during the offence.

He had been trying to sell items of jewellery to local pawnbrokers following the robbery, including two distinctive Le Vian rings.

Gardner and Carvajal were arrested after simultaneous raids on their homes on June 25.

Officers say they found a “large quantity of Le Vian jewellery, cash and mobile phones” at Gardner’s place, alongside WhatsApp messages of him trying to sell the jewellery on.

A search of Carvajal’s address uncovered a distinctive Omega pen and pair of Omega sunglasses belonging to the victim.

Meanwhile, Hicks was arrested in July in London after coppers found medication with the victim’s name on it in a bedroom drawer.

“This was a professionally planned robbery, with all four defendants playing their part to pull it off,” said Detective Sergeant Kate Hyder, of Surrey Police.

“Unfortunately, the violent and sustained attack they inflicted on the victim has had a massive impact on his life and has caused him enormous distress.

“I hope that the guilty verdicts handed out today will provide him with some form of closure and that he can finally begin to move on with his life now that all four men have been brought to justice.”

Sentencing will be at a later date.

We’re prepared for Coronavirus

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A top Guy’s and St Thomas’ official has vowed that the Trust is prepared if it receives patients with coronavirus.

The Trust’s chief executive said the risk was low from coronavirus in a report heard by the Board of Directors last week.

The hospitals have also put in place plans to deal with patients who have symptoms. Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of four centres nationally designated for dealing with airbourne infectious diseases such as coronavirus.

Two people in the UK have tested positive for the infection, one of whom was a student at the University of York.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ declined to give details of how the confirmed cases had changed the hospital’s plans for dealing with the virus.

Airlines such as BA have suspended

flights from the UK to mainland China following the outbreak centred around Wuhan City.

The foreign office advises against all non-essential travel to mainland China, and no travel at all to Hubei Province, the epicentre of the outbreak.

The infection presents as flu-like, with symptoms including a cough, fever or difficulty breathing.

Most cases appear to be mild, according to Public Health England, and those who have died from coronavirus appeared to have pre-existing conditions.

“Isolating yourself from other people, like you would with other flu viruses, is in step with the best scientific and expert advice on how to stop the coronavirus from spreading,” said Yvonne Doyle, Medical Director at Public Health England. “This means taking simple, common sense steps, such as staying at home and avoiding close contact with other people as much as possible.”

The Duchess of Cambridge visited the Evelina Children’s Hospital last week to meet kids taking part in a creative workshop.

A man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Elephant and Castle station last week.

The workshop, which has been jointly run with the National Portrait Gallery for fifteen years, aims to support the health of young patients at the hospital.

Children created their own decorated stage set with a selfportrait puppet and a cast of characters.

The Duchess, Kate Middleton, joined in with groups of children on Evelina London’s atrium, as well as visiting Beach Ward, where young people awaiting surgery also took part.

One of them taking part was nineyear-old Anna-Victoria AmoafaSennie, who gave Kate a posy of flowers when she arrived at the hospital.

“It was very exciting and very surprising because we’d seen her on the TV, but we’d never seen her in real life!” she said.

Her mother, Irene, added: “It was so lovely to see Anna-Victoria meeting The Duchess. She was so happy and excited!

“It was wonderful and something that she’ll never, ever forget.”

The Duchess has been a Patron of the hospital since 2018, and is also Patron of the National Portrait Gallery.

“It is a great pleasure to have The Duchess with us to see our young artists letting their imaginations run wild,” said Marian Ridley, Director of Evelina London.

“Art is an invaluable therapy for children and young people while they are in hospital.

British Transport Police officers were called to the underground at 3.44pm after reports of an “altercation” in the ticket hall.

A 35-year-old man from Wood Green was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and common assault. He remains in police custody as inquiries continue. The London Ambulance Service confirmed a man had been hospitalised.

A spokesperson told the News: “We were called at 3:43pm on Tuesday, January 28, to reports of a person injured near Elephant and Castle station. We sent an ambulance crew to the scene, treated a man at the scene, and took him to hospital."

MP demands King’s Hospital debt should be written off

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk King’s College Hospital’s huge debt should be written off, says Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Hayes argued the hospital’s debt – the largest of any hospital trust in the country – is as a result of government cuts and lack of investment.

“There is no investment for King’s in the secretary of state’s list of hospitals receiving capital investment, and no proposal to write off the unsustainable level of debt.

“What message am I to take back to the hard-working, life-saving staff at King’s College Hospital who are currently struggling in impossible financial circumstances?”

In April last year, the News reported that King’s was on track to hit a record overspend – again – of as much as £191 million by the end of the 18/19 financial year. The trust had a balanced budget nearly a decade ago.

Plans to part privatise, selling off the “capital, estates and facilities management” service were shelved in 2019. This would have saved the trust cash on VAT – cash that ultimately goes toward the public purse.

The government’s NHS funding bill entered parliament on January 15. It legally commits an extra £33.9 billion a year by 2024 – criticised by opposition parties as enshrining chronic underfunding.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A nineteen-year-old has been convicted of pushing a woman from a fourth-floor balcony in Borough’s Long Lane after making inappropriate advances to her at a party.

Yusef Ali, of Corry Drive, Brixton, was found guilty of section eighteen grievous bodily harm, affray and possession of an offensive weapon at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday, but cleared of attempted murder.

His attack left his eighteen-year-old victim in hospital for several weeks with a fractured back and neck, and she has since not been able to go back to work or college.

The court heard how Ali and his pals had booked out a luxury fourth-floor flat at Long Lane’s Empire Square for an overnight party on August 3.

Word of it spread and at around 3am the victim and her friends arrived at the party, along with other party-goers.

Ali had never met her before, but took an immediate interest in her, the court heard, grabbing her and pulling her hair to get her attention.

He put his hand in the thigh rip of her jeans and aggressively placed his arm around her neck – saying “this is what I do in the bedroom,” adding it

was “just banter.”

The victim became agitated, and ignored him.

Ali became angry and aggressive.

The court heard that when a group of boys arrived at the party at 9am, a brawl broke out – and Ali, after suffering cuts to his lips and head, went on the rampage with a knife.

He began waving the knife in people’s faces, lashing out and stabbing two men as they tried to flee the flat, the court was told.

Both men have since recovered.

The victim was said to be frantically trying to call for a lift when Ali approached her with knife in hand.

She ran over to the balcony, and shouted for help – when Ali ran and pushed her over the ledge.

Shockingly, the court heard how the nineteen-year-old then did not stop to look at his victim – and instead attempted to walk out the building with a t-shirt over his head.

“This was a senseless act of violence during a party that went badly wrong. Ali claimed he did not push the victim and did not see who did,” said Katherine Iyer of the Crown Prosecution Service.

“But unlike every other person who walked down the steps, he did not stop to look at the victim in distress on the floor, rather he pulled his T-shirt up over his face and left the

Dulwich man charged with perverting course of justice A man from Dulwich has been charged with perverting the course of justice by officers investigating the murder of Kennington rapper Crosslom Davis, writes Katherine Johnston...

Three men were arrested on Sunday, February 2, at around 3am at Dover Docks in Kent. Twenty-one-year-old Dejourn Dacosta, from Elmworth Grove in Dulwich was later charged with perverting the course of justice, as was a seventeenyear-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons. Both appeared at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, February 3.

They are due back in court on March 2 - at Woolwich Crown Court.

The third male arrested on Sunday has been named as Jedaiah Param, a 20-yearold from Norwood High Street.

He was charged with murder and possession of pointed/bladed articles on Monday and appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court the following day. He is expected at the Old Bailey on Thursday, February 6.

Crosslom Davis, a 20-year-old rapper from Kennington, was found suffering stab injuries in Deptford’s Bronze Street in the early hours of Friday, December 6. He died at the scene.

Another suspect, Elijah Morgan, aged 19, of no fixed abode, was charged with murder on January 5. He will appear at the Old Bailey on March 30.

Millwall community JOIN DEAN AT THE mULTI-SPORTS HALF TERM PROGRAMME

Dean Palmer is the Millwall community trust’s new Football and Sports Development Manager and has a wealth of experience in this field.

Dean originally worked at Millwall football club as a project coordinator with ‘Millwall for All’ before moving over to the trust.

He is a UEFA A Licensed coach, a qualification which he achieved in February 2019. He also has a part time role in the Academy as a youth development phase coach and has more than 10 years coaching experience including working within schools and running holiday camps.

The football and sports development coach role consist

of completing assembly’s with local school and developing the level of sport available.

He is extremely excited to be joining MCT and is looking forward to this new challenge. One of the first tasks that he will undertake is redeveloping the school’s Football and Multi sports programme including the February half term sports programmes.

Parks fighting for survival

L

iving things need light.

Plants use energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide into food. People too, especially in winter, lean like sunflowers towards warmth and vitamin D.

Right now, multiple planning applications for buildings up to twelve storeys high alongside Burgess Park threaten to put one third of the width of the park into permanent shade. This includes the newly planted wildlife area, completed in 2019 at a cost of £3.5 million, where wildflowers and pollinators will die if deprived of full sunlight.

In East Dulwich, another wildlife habitat is under threat from developers who want to demolish the Champion Hill football stadium (opened in 1992) and replace it with 224 flats for sale. A replacement stadium, with a high wall round a rubber crumb pitch, would land on Green Dale, currently home to bats, birds, stag beetles and hedgehogs.

Both parks are designated as Metropolitan Open Land: protected as natural habitats and for 'leisure, recreation, sport, arts and cultural activities'. Well-maintained sports pitches and playgrounds are vital but recreation is also about picnics, cloudwatching, spotting bugs and butterflies, picking cherries and blackberries. Every Southwark child (and adult!) should have access to these experiences.

As the 1940s Abercrombie Plan said, ‘Adequate open space for both recreation and rest is a vital factor in maintaining and improving the health of the people’. Today, parks and green spaces are estimated to save the NHS around £111 million per year, based solely on a reduction in GP visits.

Burgess Park was assembled piece by piece from bombed streets and an old canal, while Green Dale has never been built on. Both are Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation and give us a rare feeling of openness in the middle of the city, with horizons edged by trees, rather than tall buildings.

Volunteers have worked hard to look after and improve these parks, and are now fighting for their survival. Look up the websites of the Friends of Burgess Park, of Green Dale, and of Dog Kennel Hill Wood to find out more. Southwark councillors and the Mayor of London must uphold their promises to protect Metropolitan Open Land: not as fencedin astroturf or bleak overshadowed grass but as thriving natural habitats, places for recreation in the fullest sense.

Back at Parliament but in limbo

P

arliament is back but it still feels like Westminster is in limbo. We are technically out of the EU but are protected by transitional measures the Union agreed until the end of this year.

This means we have not yet seen the extreme end of the potential damage of leaving on prices in shops, delays at ports, or on many jobs for example, although some firms closed on ‘Brexit Day’ and the catastrophic decline in investment in motor-manufacturing is likely to lead to thousands more being laid off in the coming months.

Less visible impacts include our local NHS struggling to recruit and retain staff. This is already the reality in Guys and St Thomas’.

I support training more British nurses but that takes several years; the shortages are here and now and will prevent people accessing vital treatments and delay operations. No one voted for that!

The ‘£350 million a week for the NHS’ that people liked the sound of would be great, if anyone believed Johnson will ever provide it!

Sadly, I fear Johnson wouldn’t know the truth if it introduced him to his own kids.

The Government is already trying to blame the EU for the failure of the pending negotiations.

The EU told Johnson his ‘end of 2020’ deadline to complete a new, comprehensive deal with the UK was unrealistic. No such agreement has ever been achieved in that time, even for smaller economies like Canada or Japan.

Instead of doing what is best for Britain,

Johnson announced the deadline anyway.

He’ll try and shirk responsibility again for the failure to address every single trade issue in such a short period.

In the Labour Party we are also in transition. We will have a new leader in April. They cannot come soon enough frankly!

The only way is up and I hope the new leader unites the Party, tackles the toxic bullying and antisemitism, and gets Labour back to addressing the challenges facing people every day here in Southwark and across the country.

I’ve been re-appointed to the Work and Pensions Select Committee. Local people’s experience of Universal Credit has been awful; there are 19,000 people on the dreaded and failing system in the north of our borough already. There are thousands more disabled people unable to access sufficient support more widely.

In the last few years I have won an amendment to get extra help for terminally ill people, helped reduce the time and level of benefit cuts imposed on some people, and secured a commitment to cut the number of routine reassessments people with learning disabilities undergo.

I will use the committee role to try and secure further improvements.

Locally, I was pleased to work with councillors and campaigners to help secure the future of the Maddock Way GP surgery.

The original decision to close it in April was not based on local patient needs, did not take into account other overstretched practices nearby who wanted to expand into this space and I am glad this mistake has been overturned.

The only people who want the EU flag flying are the pathetic undemocratic remain variety. When will they ever get it through their stupid heads we are not against Europe because we don’t want to stay in the EU, we are against the undemocratic system of the EU. Obviously the two parties are compatible as they don’t like free speech and democracy.

I would like to ask Kieron Williams, the housing and modernisation cabinet member at Southwark Council about his comment: “As long as we have residents in the current Aylesbury blocks we‘ll continue to invest in them to make sure they are in decent condition and that the heating and hot water stay on”. I have elderly parents who have lived on this estate for 25 years or more and a sister who has lived on there even longer and I can assure you this is not a recent problem…more like a regular occurrence over several years, therefore would like to ask in this day and age does he consider living for days without any heating or hot water in properties without any double glazing acceptable and a decent way to live? Please tell me where any investment has been made in the last 10 years because I am unable to see any!

The population now has already overloaded the bus routes. With a bus virtually every minute and them all being overcrowded between 6 and 10am and again in the evenings there needs to be some immediate plan of action to relieve the transport issues. The Bakerloo line extension will struggle to cope with the existing population as well as these new estate.

Dual crossword With yet another fatality on Peckham road, local input into Vision Zero is needed more than ever

P

eckham High Street has been known to the authorities and TfL as a death trap for years. But it has taken nearly six years, and four pedestrian deaths, to even start a public consultation on what exactly can be done to make the road safer.

The delays are simply unacceptable, and hugely frustrating to grieving families who have had to see others go through the same ordeal.

Even with the modified layout, safer crossings, and a lower 20mph speed limit they suggest, many people feel the only solution is to stop people from crossing outside designated areas.

Many people have campaigned to have the removed railings that used to line the road reinstated. Especially at junctions, railings are often removed to make the road safer for cyclists who are at risk of being crushed.

Although the circumstances of each fatality on the road will be different, they were all pedestrians and we know the three formally named knew the road well.

Now the delayed consultation has started, it is so important that everyone who has signed the petition to reinstate railings, or has witnessed collisions, comes forward with their views and shares them with TfL. Longer-term, Vision Zero is City Hall’s commitment to end serious accidents and deaths on our roads in the next two decades. This wider strategy is partly about identifying danger hotspots and fixing those roads and junctions – like Peckham High Street.

But it also acknowledges that even in the safest places, at any time pedestrians and drivers can make mistakes or take risks not worth taking.

People who live in Peckham, and those who regularly travel in the area, will know which sections of the road pose the most risk and what times of the day get particularly congested.

what’s on Daniel O'Reilly is better known as the controversial Dapper Laughs. he is now taking part in a play that is firmly rooted in south London’s crime scene, writes Michael Holland...

A rollercoaster career led to his own TV series, a feature film, sellout gigs, plus, Daniel was also a guest in the Celebrity Big Brother house, he is now set to make his West End debut alongside fellow former housemate Paul Danan.

“I am good mates with Paul and he is a top bloke and great actor so I am pleased to be able to get the chance to work with him,” explained Daniel. The two will be joined by David Schaal (Inbetweeners/ The Office) and playwright Michael Head who is teaming up with Danan after their success with Worth A Flutter, which received rave reviews from critics.

Now they are all set to hit the West End for one week only in gritty crime thriller ‘Time'.

“It is a very powerful and moving script but also has some great comic moments and lines, which is what got me interested,” adds O’Reilly.

Written by Michael Head, a former Silwood Estate resident, whose recent success with 'Worth A Flutter' and 'The Greater Game' has led to him being hailed by critics as 'a leading light in working class theatre' and 'a writer who can mix empathy with comedy, making the audience laugh one moment and cry the next'.

Time tells the story of four armed robbers who meet after a job goes tragically wrong. Although some might

feel the story sounds a little far fetched, Time is a play with its roots firmly placed in the real world. Head, who spent his formative years in Bermondsey, says, “I grew up around armed robbers so was always hearing stories about them doing ‘a bit of work’ or ‘going on the trot’… Londoners love telling stories and I was always fascinated and entertained by the tales I would be told.”

So, Head decided to write a play based on these people and their exploits.

“Time doesn't glorify villainy,” he explains, “but it does try and show these people in a real light; they are not the monsters often shown in gangster films, they were just family men who through choice or circumstance found themselves working outside of the law…

I’m not trying to make a moral stand or political view, as that is not what I believe theatre should be about,” he continues. “Theatre should be about enjoyment, being entertained by a story and the characters in it…Hopefully it will touch the audience and make them laugh.”

Michael is delighted to be working with Danan again: “Paul and I have been very close mates for a long time and is it always great to have a chance to work alongside talented people who you get on with. Plus, to be joined by Daniel and David is a real honour, and the fact the play is based on my family and stories that are real and close to my heart make it even more special Time is on at the Tristan Bates Theatre, The Actors Centre, 1a Tower Street, London, WC2H 9NP from 10th -15th February 2020. Tears and Laughter When Boyfriend Dies at Sea

Through three generations of women who have lost someone close to them, ‘Killing It’ is a dark and funny exploration of the very modern pressure to make grief useful.

When a young man goes missing at sea, his girlfriend does what the traditions of her culture demand and turns her loss into a stand-up show.

His mother takes comfort from her YouTube audience, and her son’s best friend. His grandmother is not paying attention because she is busy plotting the assassination of the US president.

Writer and performer Josephine Starte, an award-winning writerperformer, said, “I wrote Killing It at a fairly hopeless time — I’d come back to London after four years in Australia, leaving a relationship and a life, for a self-destructive country full of unhappy old friends. I agreed with them. Then a close friend died suddenly and depression turned into layers of grief: hysteria, disbelief, panic, despondency.

“Being this heartbroken seemed like something that could easily ruin my life, and my impulse was to write about it, to take back a little control.

“Killing It developed into a story about this impulse: the need to make sadness productive. I wrote about three women all attempting to be emboldened by tragedy, in the midst of a hardening world, where grief only makes them vulnerable, and where the vulnerable do not survive.”

Dapper and Danan Doing Time

Dead But Not Forgotten When We Died is a striking new play about one woman’s choice to confront her trauma - faced with the body of the man who raped her, she tells her story on her terms.

He’s dead and it’s her job as an embalmer to prepare the body for his family’s final goodbye. She often imagines what each person’s life was like; today she doesn’t have to imagine.

She knows him.

Written and performed by Alexandra Donnachie, the play follows one woman as she embalms a body and decides whether to tell the wife her truth about her husband. More about recovery and life than trauma and death, it is nonetheless sensitive in its depictions and discussions about issues that are not easy subjects to discuss.

Carbon Theatre are working closely with Serenity, a sexual assault referral centre, who are offering advice and mentorship on the play’s content right up until the play opens. A Theatrical Trauma Specialist and a trained embalmer have also been onboard throughout development to provide

experience and insight into the more visceral and biological processes of the body in death and in the aftermath of a sexual assault.

Donnachie comments, This play has been in my brain - and in various different Word documents across two laptops - for nearly four years.

Throughout those years, the societal backdrop that When We Died is set against has changed, mostly for the better, in ways I could never have imagined when I wrote the first draft

in 2016. I am over the moon to finally get to stage the play When We Died has become at one of the most prestigious festivals in the theatre world’s calendar and as part of a team who have helped me grow the piece.

Peckham’s little minnie with the mighty voice

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The warning “Mind the Gap” is often first attributed to sound engineer Peter Lodge who, in 1968, recorded himself issuing the catchphrase in Bayswater.

A news report from the time dubbed her “Little Minnie with the Mighty Voice”. She told reporters that it had downsides too – saying her husband often complained “he couldn’t get a word in against me”.

More tube trivia • Passengers on the first ever Central Line journey in 1900 included the then-Prince of Wales and writer Mark Twain • The Central Line was used as a two-mile long factory producing fighter jets in WW2, a fact only made public in the 1980s.

• The Victoria Line could have been called the Viking Line, one of the early proposals • American talk show host Jerry Springer was born in East Finchley Station during an air raid in WW2. His parents were German Jews who had fled the Nazis in 1939. They later emigrated to New York • During the war supply trains brought seven tonnes of food and 2,400 gallons of tea and cocoa every night to sheltering Londoners • The first baby born on the tube was on the Bakerloo Line, in 1924, on a train at Elephant and Castle • It is believed half a million mice make the underground their home

The Northern Line has another voice – that of Oswald Lawrence – whose recording was replaced but then brought back into use after his widow, Margaret, contacted TfL telling them how it comforted her to hear him every time she caught a train.

But decades before either put their own trademark on the catchphrase, there was a woman from Peckham whose thunderous cry took her all the way to court defending her announcement skills.

In the late 1950s, a female passenger fell down the gap at Charing Cross. In 1961 she took her case to the High Court after claiming negligence and damages.

In their defence in court, it was argued tube employee Minnie Smith, a 61-yearold from Peckham, had called out “Mind the Gap” with her booming voice just before the fall.

In court, her bosses described her as having “the best shouting voice at Charing Cross” and the judge found in their favour.

Hours are variable, involving daytime and evening work in our clubs and school holiday programmes, study time, and some overnight and weekend residentials.

This exciting new youth work apprenticeship is fully funded by the Bert and Aase Sams Legacy. As part of a team of two lead youth workers, deputy manager and manager, the apprentice will be learning through direct work with young people aged 8 to 25 (including some who have special education needs) and a formal programme of study leading to a Level 3 Youth Work Diploma qualification. Candidates will have at least 6 months experience (paid or voluntary), an enthusiasm for working with young people living in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe and the flexibility to work the full range of variable hours and activities.

SESSIONAL CONTRACT (UNTIL JUNE 30, 2020) £25 AN HOUR, 2 HOURS A WEEK

We seek a talented tutor, experienced in all subject areas, to attend one of our youth clubs and guide young people aged 8 to 16 in study practices and aides to reach their full potential. You will have direct experience of the modern school curriculum, bringing knowledge of core subjects as well as study techniques (including managing dyslexia and other learning difficulties). You will support individual young people with one-on-one advice and guidance, together with organised group activities for those studying the same material.

Youth clubs run from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, Monday to Wednesday (your start and finish times will be agreed within this framework).

The 2 hours per week will include the tutor’s preparation time and the study support session.

TEN-MAN Peckham Town scored two minutes from time against Forest Hill Park last weekend to reach the final of the London FA Trophy for the first time in their history.

In the 88th minute against their Lewisham rivals, Marcus Black took advantage of confusion in the home defence to fire into the roof of the net and ensure Southwark representation in the showpiece final.

It was all the more impressive after manager Mary Phillip had to make late changes to her starting XI as Moses Abioye and Yaya Barry both failed fitness tests. Abioye had scored

a hat-trick in the previous round to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 win against Hill Top. Peckham, backed by around 40 travelling Menace Ultras, almost went behind when the referee played advantage after the linesman had raised the offside flag. Town goalkeeper George Legg was charged down and the visitors were relieved to see the ball come back off the crossbar.

That unsettled Peckham and Legg made a good save to keep the ‘Battle of the Boroughs’ contest level.

The Menace stepped it up after the break and the increased tempo of their play made it difficult for their opponents, who had to defend stoutly.

Phillip’s side then suffered a blow

when influential midfielder Norman Hong was given a straight red card for a reckless challenge.

But Black popped up with that dramatic late winner.

Phillip said: "Everything we did out there we did it ourselves. We used what we had in us to get the job done and I've said it before that I'm so proud of these lads.

“I want to thank the people of Peckham for their continued support, and to Forest Hill Park for a good game and first-class hospitality."

The final will be played on Tuesday, March 31, with a 7.45pm kick-off. Full details of tickets and the venue will be published by the London FA, and will also be found on Peckham Town's website and social media.

Ballers bounce back at Dulwich

Stansfeld 2-0 Lydd Town

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD SCORED twice inside the first nine minutes against Lydd Town last weekend to continue their promising form.

Lydd started brightly and created the first chance of the game but Stansfeld goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell managed to tip a low shot around the post.

Stansfeld created their first opportunity in the sixth minute and from a corner a clearing header fell to Sam Ryan on the edge of the box and he fired a left-footed half-volley into the top corner giving the visiting keeper no chance.

Three minutes later, Macey Malyon raced on to a through ball from Red Jenkins and from the right of the box arrowed his shot across goal and into the bottom corner to double Stansfeld’s lead.

Joe Minter then had two long-range strikes which the Lydd keeper did well to keep out. Just before half-time Freddie Cray made a late run into the box from Billy Shinners’ knock-down but his sidefoot volley went just wide of the post.

The second half started as the first half ended, with Stansfeld comfortable on the ball and creating more of the chances.

Things were made easier for Stansfeld when Lydd were reduced to ten men after a foul on Cottrell. That killed the game as a contest and with the Stansfeld defence in such fine form Lydd never looked like scoring.

Stansfeld did have chances on the break but were happy to sit, protect their lead and get another clean sheet. They remain sixth in the First Division table.

Man of the match: Sam Ryan Stansfeld Reserves moved into the quarter-finals of the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield with a 2-1 victory over Otford United. Ben Newman and Connor McCormack got the goals.

The 3rds crashed out of the West Kent Challenge Shield, after losing at home 5-3 to Bromleians Reserves. Cameron MacMillan, Tom Flaherty and Joe Stowell scored for Stansfeld.

Division Four side Peckham just got the better of their Division Five opponents thanks to Antony Dennis’ goal.

Avery Hill pinned the visitors back early on but in tricky conditions the Rye weathered the storm.

Peckham created the first chance when Charlie Eldridge found Bobby Redwood who beat two defenders but saw his shot saved.

Jon Omara also tested the goalkeeper but a scrappy game remained goalless at the

break.

Manager Danny Gibson and assistant Owen Rochester were not happy with the performance and handed a debut Chris Ortiz as Malik Ouani join Redwood in attack.

Jim Holman headed off the bar from Eldridge’s corner before Redwood hit the post.

It looked like it wasn’t going to be the Rye’s day when Eldridge then struck the woodwork again from a free-kick.

But Gibson’s side finally made the breakthrough when Omara flicked on a throw-in and birthday boy Dennis ghosted in at the back post to score and clinch a 1-0 win.

Gibson said: “We were not at our best but sometimes winning when not at your best is a sign of a good side.”

Hamlet boss hails striker after hat-trick sport@southwarknews.co.uk GAVIN ROSE paid tribute to hat-trick hero Danny Mills, and was pleased with the improved service to his frontman after Dulwich Hamlet’s thrilling 5-3 win over Chelmsford City last weekend.

Dulwich had gone 3-1 in front with goals from Mills, Kieran Monlouis and Christian Smith, before opposing striker Sam Higgins bagged a brace to draw proceedings level on the hour-mark.

However, two more from Hamlet’s top scorer in the 78th and 89th minutes snatched a second win of 2020.

Rose was not surprised to see Mills take his chances.

Rose said: “When the boys give him service and deliveries, he’s capable of scoring goals at this level.

“But what we’ve done at times is starve him of opportunities, which has been frustrating for me and probably himself.

“We’ve got to stick to what we’re good

at. We’ve put a team together, we know what their strengths are, and if they stick to it we’ll be a threat further on.”

Dulwich looked particularly potent on Saturday, and were boosted too by an impressive performance on his return from Monlouis, who had been on loan at Margate.

Rose added: “He [Monlouis] came in, trained really well, and we liked what we saw. He’s come back fresher, match-fit, confident, and he brought that to training, so I backed him to play in the match and do well.

“Danny had Kieran go up and join him from a deep position, number ten, so he had bodies around him, which was good.”

Saturday was the second time Dulwich have scored five or more goals at Champion Hill this calendar year, something the consistently large crowds (2,628 against Chelmsford) will no doubt have enjoyed. But Rose admitted that, for a manager, such a topsy-turvy game is far from ideal.

He continued: “I don’t really enjoy those games when the control isn’t there, and I

felt we didn’t control the game as well as I would’ve liked.

“But I do enjoy winning and I like the fact that we fought back on a few occasions, and got ourselves back into the ascendency. We showed a lot of grit, scored five, and got a win.”

There had been good news ahead of kick-off as Dulwich Hamlet announced that Millwall loanee Jesse Debrah would be staying for the rest of the season.

Debrah is a nineteen-year-old centreback with an obvious hunger to learn.

“We want to keep helping Jesse in his development by giving him the games,” Rose said. “He’s a very, very good defender and, most importantly, is very keen to listen.

“They’re [Millwall] keen for Jesse to do well. Our communication with them is good, and he’s learning a lot.”

Next up for Dulwich is a trip to promotion hopefuls Havant & Waterlooville, in a game which could see the south London side move into the top half of the National League South table.

Kick-off this Saturday is 3pm.

Mills claims match ball after late drama sport@southwarknews.co.uk A DANNY Mills hat-trick secured Dulwich Hamlet a first win in five league game, as they eventually saw off Chelmsford City 5-3 in a mistakeridden game at Champion Hill last Saturday.

After falling behind in the match, Dulwich then had their 3-1 second-half lead pegged back, before Mills stole the show in the final ten minutes.

The drama began in the tenth minute when Jeffrey Monakana struck the post from the penalty spot, after Clarets player-manager Robbie Simpson had wrestled Mills to the ground when the striker had let the ball run through his legs.

Experienced EFL journeyman Simpson is in temporary charge at Chelmsford, following Rod Stringer’s departure from the Essex club last week.

Five minutes later, Hamlet keeper Charlie Grainger could only punch Billy Knott’s free-kick as far as Chris Whelpdale, who fired through on-loan Millwall defender Jesse Debrah on the line. Debrah, prior to kick-off, had been confirmed a Dulwich Hamlet player for the remainder of the season.

The lead lasted fifteen minutes before Kieran Monlouis marked his return from a loan spell at Margate with a goal, reacting from close range to Mills’ header against the crossbar.

But visiting forward Sam Higgins hit back twice in quick succession, first pouncing on possibly-impeded Grainger’s mishandling of a lofted freekick, then heading in Whelpdale’s nearpost cross.

Dulwich manager Gavin Rose was visibly incensed by the collapse, while the 2,628 Champion Hill faithful were stunned.

But as the game approached the 80th minute the victory charge began, and it was Mills on the line to poke in captain David Ihaja’s effort across goal.

Hamlet’s leading goal-scorer then claimed the match ball before injurytime, as he rounded Chelmsford keeper Jack West-Astuti having been gifted the ball by Whelpdale.

Whelpdale, another seasoned pro and once of AFC Wimbledon, responded with a swerving shot at the goal, but Grainger was equal to it, concluding the game with its best save.

The win lifts Dulwich up to fourteenth in the National League South table, significantly seven points clear of Chippenham Town in the relegation zone, who were beaten on Saturday.

Former boss Neil Harris talked about a steam train when the Lions were going for promotion in 2017-18. Gary Rowett’s side took off like a TGV after he took over but one point from two games in Yorkshire has slowed Millwall in their tracks.

Sure, Millwall didn’t lose last Saturday but Sheffield Wednesday were a side there for the taking. They hadn’t scored in two home games and had lost 5-0 here to Blackburn before Millwall’s visit.

That beating fed into their cautious approach. Millwall were the better side in the first half but just didn’t have that extra attacking quality to take advantage of some promising moments.

It’s one of the images of Millwall’s season now, Jed Wallace sprinting through the middle in the opposition half and looking around him but seeing little support.

The Lions are unapologetically a counter-attacking side, particularly away.

Not surprising given the squad was built

by Harris to not have the ball, instead defending deep before winning it back and trying to hit teams out of position.

It’s thrilling when it works. But Wallace needs more help in those moments.

Mason Bennett wasn’t in the match-day squad but was probably salivating at the opportunities that presented themselves as Millwall went at Wednesday.

There was one moment in the first half, similar to one at Leeds the previous week, when Wallace ran at the heart of the Owls defence. He only had Tom Bradshaw up with him on his right, and nothing to his left. Murray Wallace is naturally more defensive-minded, and does that side so well, and Shane Ferguson, for a winger, is probably also more inclined towards cautiousness.

Millwall need someone else bombing up that side, and hopefully Bennett can provide that thrust.

In the end Wallace tried to play in Bradshaw, but Wednesday got enough players back.

There just wasn’t that finishing touch, from either side.

This had a stalemate look about it from a long way out...until deep into injury-time when one substitute, Jayson Molumby, cleverly flicked on a header to another, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. For the first time in the game a striker was through with a clear chance.

What happened next has probably given Bodvarsson sleepless nights this week.

The more you looked at a replay of it the more you can see how many options for a finish the Iceland international had.

Striker misses glorious late chance If you have never been in that position, as the majority of us never have, it’s almost impossible to get inside the mind of a striker. Maybe he had too much time to think about it. The armchair opinion is he should have struck it low and hard and if the goalkeeper saved it then fair enough, though it’s still a bad miss. Instead Bodvarsson opted for a lofted attempt and from the moment it left his boot you knew it was going over.

Bodvarsson does not deserve anything more than constructive criticism: maybe just put the laces through it next time.

Rowett certainly didn’t hammer his striker, relying instead on that old adage that at least he got himself into a position to miss. It would have been worse had he not been on the move into space.

Millwall were often close to that breakthrough. In the nineteenth minute Wallace sprinted forward into an empty Wednesday half. Shane Ferguson needed to find him a second earlier but couldn’t and Adam Reach sprinted back to intercept the attempted pass.

Wednesday had their chances. Leftback Moses Odubajo fired wide of Bart Bialkowski’s near post in the 22nd minute. Odubajo was an influential figure at both ends of the pitch.

Mahlon Romeo shot just wide of the top right corner after running across the Owls box. Millwall were the better side before the break and Dominic Iorfa had to stretch to prevent Jed Wallace’s cross giving Matt Smith a tap-in chance eight minutes before half-time.

The Owls’ best striker of the ball, Reach, had a sliver of space in front of him in the 40th minute but sliced wide.

Then in the 42nd minute Barry Bannan cleverly allowed the ball to run past him, giving Odubajo the chance to cross and Reach headed across goal and just wide of the far post.

Wednesday were much more direct after the break and Jed Wallace was booked after cynically taking down Kadeem Harris with the winger running in towards the box from the left.

Iorfa produced an excellent tackle on Bodvarsson on the edge of the penalty area, before moments later at the other end the Wednesday centre-back fired over from a corner.

Connor Mahoney crossed for Jake Cooper to head straight at Cameron Dawson and then Bradshaw indicated he thought he should have had a penalty when from another Mahoney cross he missed the ball. Odubajo had perhaps clipped his shooting leg.

Fernando Forestieri had come on earlier and cut in from the left but could only shoot low at Bialkowski.

Then came that moment for Bodvarsson.

He’ll replay it in his head and his miss meant the Lions slipped five points off the play-off places.

Ryan Leonard’s energy will be a boost for Millwall

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT WAS Ryan Leonard’s appetite for extra work on the training pitch that led to a second serious injury in two months – and the “toughest couple of weeks” of his career.

Leonard, 27, had recovered from a torn lateral ligament in his right knee and was one strike of a ball away from returning to full training in December.

But with that last shot after training Leonard felt a dart of pain down his leg and a scan confirmed that he had torn the same ligament as the one against Leeds in October.

That meant it was “back to square one”, and another two months out.

Leonard didn’t realise the extent of the damage after he went in for a tackle against the Whites in the first half of the Lions’ 2-1 win, but knew immediately in December when he suffered the exact same tear.

If all goes to plan, former Southend and Sheffield United midfielder Leonard will have a full week’s training behind him before the Lions’ clash with West Brom this weekend.

But he’s not counting his chickens after getting so close to a competitive return in December.

“I came back and was about two days away from returning to full training. I did a shooting session and tore it again, I felt it go. I was gutted. That was another two months on top of two months,” Leonard said.

“As soon as I took the shot I felt it down the outside of my knee. I didn’t want to say it to myself but I knew deep down it was something similar.

“It just came from nowhere because my rehab had been going so well. I had a couple of injections to speed the healing process.

“It was a bit of a blow and my head was all over the place for a couple of weeks, which I guess is normal. I was about to go back into full training, it was on a Friday and I was going to train on the Monday. I was actually doing extra after training and it was the last shot of the practice.

“It was back to square one. It was some of the toughest couple of weeks I’ve had in my career. When you’re in the frame of mind of getting back into training, you’ve done all the rehab you can and then literally have to start again, it’s difficult.

“I was at the training ground the whole time but I had a ten-day, two-week period when I wasn’t able to do anything. That’s

You come in and ice it, do some upperbody weights but you’re just waiting for it to heal.

“Until you can get back into the gym and get involved in certain sessions you just float around, it’s so boring. That’s what a lot of people don’t see. They see the stuff when you’re back out again.

“I’ve got a new-born baby as well so my missus has been doing everything. She was born last July. I could only sit there with a big brace on my knee feeding her.

My missus had to pick her up, change her, do everything, really.

“When I went home [after the second injury] and told her, she was devastated.

It’s hard enough in the first place, but having a young family as well makes it tougher.

“Getting injured is hard enough but when you get reinjured it’s a really hard

one. It wasn’t ideal timing but we managed to get through it.”

Leonard has yet to play under Gary Rowett, but feels that he can offer the Lions boss options in a number of positions.

Leonard continued: “The first time I met the gaffer I had a brace on. I said hello to him and said, ‘you won’t be using me for a while!’ I’ve been watching the sessions and all the games, been in all the team meetings. So I kind of know what the gaffer wants and the way he wants to play.

“When you’re injured you’re not with the lads all the time, but I wanted to be in the team meetings and team-talks just so I knew I could hit the ground running when I came back and to know what he wanted from me.

“He knows the type of player I am so hopefully he’ll see a position for me and I can fit back into the system.

“I can play in different positions so that

can only help me. The way I look at it at the moment I think I’d be happy with any role.

Maybe if I was playing every week it would be a different answer.

“I’m not going to limit myself at the moment. I played for Sheffield United on the right side of a back three. I’ve played wing-back, there are three or four positions I can play in [a 5-2-3] formation.

That’s good for me, for the gaffer and probably good for the team.

“It’s another string to my bow and from an unselfish point of view I think that can help.

“He leaves no stone unturned, from what I’ve seen, he’s very thorough as most managers are these days. He knows what he wants. Training is intense, I think you can see that from games, he likes players to be intense on and off the ball.

“He wants the lads to move the ball quickly and to press with purpose as well.

That’s the big thing that I’ve noticed.”

Ironically, Leonard made his Millwall debut against the same side he tore his ligament against. And this weekend, he could return against a West Brom team that has lost just four times in the league all season and lead the Whites by a point at the top of the Championship.

“I made my debut against Leeds at The Den so to potentially have my first game back against the league’s top side at the moment at home would be lovely.

“I’ve got a full week’s training and hopefully I can do enough to get myself back into the squad. That’s the main aim for me at the moment, to get back on the bench and then get back into the team.

“It’ll be a great atmosphere, especially with it being on a Sunday.

“Hopefully I can help the lads. They’ve been flying, but if I can add to that then it will be great.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MASON BENNETT has spoken publicly for the first time about the drink-driving incident that left him and Tom Lawrence facing the possibility of prison sentences and former Derby County club captain Richard Keogh suffering serious injuries that have left his professional football career in the balance.

Bennett, 23, could make his Millwall debut this weekend against West Bromwich Albion at The Den after signing on loan from the Rams last week.

Bennett spoke to the News this week at the Lions’ training ground. The former England youth international understandably wants to move on and is reluctant to revisit the night of September 24 last year.

A question about whether he has spoken to Keogh since the accident is answered, “yes”, but there is no further elaboration.

Keogh, who was a passenger along with a youth team player in Lawrence’s Range Rover that crashed into the back of Bennett’s on the A6 near Allestree in Derby after a team-bonding dinner, was sacked by the club just over a month later.

Keogh appealed the decision.

Bennett and Lawrence, who fled the scene of the accident, pleaded guilty to drink-driving and were fined six weeks’ wages by Derby. The pair avoided jail but were ordered by a court to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work, and given a twelvemonth community order.

Both had been over the legal limit of 35mg per 100ml when they were breathtested after returning to the scene 45 minutes after the accident, when Keogh was still in the back seat of Lawrence’s car having suffered knee injuries that will keep him out of the game for over a year. Bennett’s reading was 64, while Lawrence’s was 58.

Bennett and Lawrence were also banned from driving for two years, which means that Bennett walks to training at Millwall’s Calmont Road base from his local accommodation in Bromley.

Bennett is also carrying out the community work order locally, some of which is in allotments as well as charity work.

When asked about the details of that night last September – when he had vomited after consuming a Jaeger bomb at 9.30pm before leaving the Joiner’s Arms pub an hour later and eventually getting behind the wheel of his car – Bennett wasn’t keen to go through them again.

“I’ve addressed all that in court and it’s all been settled, so as far as I’m concerned that’s it done now and I want to focus on my career,” he said.

“I know I’ve messed up. I’m just really focussed on my career and getting going again.

“It was one of those mistakes... I’ll look back when I’m in my 60s and 70s and still regret it then. I’m still young, I’m still trying to learn life lessons and within football, so I can take that as a life lesson and move forward and improve in the future.”

Last October, the court heard that Derby had organised counselling for Lawrence following the death of his mother, Deborah.

Lawrence’s team-mates were aware of how the Wales international struggled after that loss.

“I knew about [the struggles],” Bennett continued. “He spoke about it with the lads, it’s a close group. But his personal problems are his personal problems and I

“Me and Tom were in this together and went through it together, and we’re still good friends now. I’d say he’s one of my closest mates because we went through so much together off the pitch and throughout the court case.

“We both look back on it and regret it massively. We’re both just trying to move forward.”

Bennett highlighted the support of his grandmother, Gene, who has been a strong pillar in his life. When Bennett was named Apprentice of the Year at the Football

League Awards in 2014 and received £500, he took Gene out for an Indian dinner.

“I don’t see much of my mum, she’s getting on with her own life,” Bennett added. “My nan brought me up ever since I was eight or nine, so I’ll always look to repay her for what she’s done for me in helping me to get to where I am today.

“The past couple of months I probably wouldn’t have got through it without her, she’s a really special person in my life.”

Bennett insists he wasn’t concerned with the potentially negative reactions of Millwall fans after his move.

“No,” he said. “I’m here to play football.

I think that’s what the fans want to see.

What’s happened’s happened and I’m here to give my all for this club.

“I’ve had my time at Derby and when I look back on it I have some great memories. But I need to move on with my career and get going again.”

Bennett is from Langwith in Derbyshire and has spent his whole career with the Rams, with loans at Chesterfield, Burton and Notts County, all within a 25-mile radius, and Bradford City, just over 70 miles from Derby.

Is it a challenge moving on his own to London?

“It is,” he admits, “but I’m one of those guys that likes to get out of my comfort zone. I want to test myself, test my character and see if I can overcome these challenges. London is a big city and so far away from home, my little girl lives up there.

“But the train’s not too bad, I came back down [Monday].”

Bennett is Derby’s youngest-ever player, after making his debut aged 15 years and 99 days against Middlesbrough in October 2011. He is also their youngest goal-scorer, at 16 years and 174 days old.

It’s tempting to think that was a case of too much, too soon, but Bennett, again, emphasises that he’s looking forward, while learning from the past.

“I’ve had a few injuries, a few different managers who liked different people in different positions,” he said. “It has been difficult for me.

“But I can only look back at myself and maybe look to see did I do enough, did I do what I was supposed to do to get to where I needed to get?

“I’m still only 23 and I’ve still got a long career. I’m really looking forward to learning from the mistakes and pushing forward.”

Bennett’s last start was on November 27 when he injured his ankle playing for Derby against Preston.

Midfielder Leonard hasn’t played since he damaged knee ligaments in the first half of the 2-1 win over Leeds on October 5.

Leonard tore the same lateral knee ligament in training in December that put him out for another two months.

“Most games that end up comfortable don’t start in the same way,” Nugent said.

“For 70 minutes, we weren’t great. If anything, I thought we were quite average.

In the last 20 minutes, however, we took our chances and put the game to bed, it could’ve been more.

“But, I’m not papering over the cracks with regards to the first 70 minutes.

training ahead of the clash with Slaven Bilic’s table-topping Baggies.

“There will be nothing to stop them being involved other than me thinking they might not be at their maximum, or close enough to their maximum,” Lions boss Gary Rowett said.

“They’ve both had different rehabs for different injuries but not dissimilar timescales. Ideally sometimes you’d give them two or three under-23 games but my argument would be we don’t really have the time to do that.

“The months are running down. We don’t want to spend another month getting them fit and then having only six weeks, two months left of the season.

“I don’t think either of them will be in a position to start, but they’ll both be available and it’s down then to me to see whether it’s worth using them over someone who’s properly fit.

“If I think they’ll give us a slightly different option then I’ll use them.”

Rowett explained where Bennett can be a threat and what he offers that is different to what is already in the squad.

“He can play anywhere down the middle,” Rowett said, “he can play as a 10, a 9, he can play off the left or right. I think he’s probably more effective coming off the left because he’s not the type of player that’s naturally jinky or tricky, he’s more direct.

it’s good to give them the opportunity to go outside or cut inside on to their favourite foot.

“He’s a dangerous player, you only have to watch clips of him at this best last season.

In the play-off final he was very, very good as a 9. He’s just different to what we’ve got.

“It’s very difficult for us to be able to bring in someone from the top end of the Championship who’s scored fifteen to 20 goals consistently, because we haven’t got that type of finance.

“We’ve got to try and find players that we can mould and help shape them into something more threatening for us.

“We hadn’t got that raw pace and power.

We had lots of other good options, but not

that, so I thought it was worth the risk, really.

“And it is a bit of a risk because he’s not quite fully fit yet. We need to keep him fit, which is a big thing for Mason, and we’ll see where we go from there.”

Millwall are unbeaten against West Brom this season, drawing 1-1 in the league and winning 2-1 in the first round of the EFL Cup, both games at the Hawthorns last August.

West Brom have lost the fewest number of games in the Championship this season (four) but three of them have come in a run of just one win in their last eight games.

That came last Saturday as they defeated bottom side Luton 2-0 at home.

“We want to win every game. It’s difficult to be disappointed when you [win] 3-0, but we’ve set some really good standards this season and I don’t think we matched them [Monday]. It’s good, however, that we’re up the top of the table and the players are developing, too.”

Left-back Junior Tiensia signed his first professional deal with the club last week.

Nugent said: “It’s good to get Junior tied

up to the club. He’s got potential, but as a young lad there are parts of his game that needs to improve. We’ll be working on those with him.

“We feel we’re closing the gap [between the Under 23s and first team] a little bit, but their performances can be up and down.

“So we’ve got to make sure we’ve got that level of consistency in them.”

Chris Perry and Larry McAvoy’s side went 2-0 up through Sean O’Brien – who had missed a penalty in the fourth minute – and Abdul Abdulmalik.

But the Cherries hit back as Euan Pollock and Khavarn Williams brought them level.

Lions boss Gary Rowett recruited Ryan Woods and Mason Bennett last month, and Millwall have options to make both deals permanent.

Luke Steele returned on loan from Nottingham Forest following Frank Fielding’s arm injury that rules him out for the rest of the season.

Millwall also made Bart Bialkowski’s loan move permanent from Ipswich.

The Lions would ideally like to have added another left-sided player in the last window, and that will now become one of the focuses in the summer.

There are also several players on the fringes who could leave after this season. Jiri Skalak hasn’t yet succeeded in forcing his way into the side regularly, while Aiden O’Brien didn’t rule out a loan move last month when the News asked him about his future late last year.

Jason McCarthy is on loan at Wycombe and should he leave permanently in the summer then the club will need another right-back to rival Mahlon Romeo.

club and that’s an area that Rowett could seek to strengthen, as well as bringing in another striker.

Millwall have expanded their scouting into overseas leagues, specifically in Scandinavia and Germany, as they look for the kind of bargains that boosted Norwich when they were in the Championship.

“I think you always have a plan, you always work a window ahead,” Rowett said. “Even in this window you’re saying, ‘okay, if we do that this window is that going to stop us doing something in the summer?’

“What’s the best chance of getting value for money? Realistically you’re going to get more value for money in the summer than you are in January.

Bennett has recovered from the ankle injury that has kept him out of competitive action since last November.

“I got injured at an unfortunate time but I wanted to get ready because I knew this opportunity was coming along,” Bennett said. “I’m glad it got over the line and I’m finally here.

“I’ve seen from afar the team are doing well here. I kept in touch with Pearcey [Alex Pearce] since he left Derby. As soon as I heard about the interest I was really keen to get down here.

“I really needed a fresh start and to get my career up and running again.

“I haven’t played a match yet so that’s the next step, but in terms of training I feel fine. My ankle’s been great and I’m really looking forward to getting down to The Den and getting started.

“I want to do my best here and try to help the team secure play-offs. Who knows what can happen in the summer but until then I want to work hard for this club.

“I know the fans are really passionate and they want to see 100 per cent commitment and work rate. That’s me down to a tee, I’ve always worked hard and given 100 per cent.
