Driver was not to blame for death of gallery worker

A LORRY driver did not see the cyclist who was killed by his HGV, an inquest heard.

Chiara Giacomini, 30, originally from Guildford in Surrey, but living in Dulwich,

was killed following the accident which took place at Thurlow Park Road, near the junction of Gallery Road, in Dulwich back in 2013.

Gym ban is a different story

A

WEEK after the News reported that social housing tenants at a prestigious development at Tower Bridge will be denied access to rooftop garden; we have now learnt a gym in a new Bermondsey development is out of bounds to non-leaseholders even if they offer to pay for it.

Properties in north of the borough are commanding such high prices that buyers will be expecting that added extra for their buck, including luxury gardens and exclusive facilities like gyms. However, it would appear that a clear policy should be adopted when the council approves these multi-million developments to ensure that tenants are not made to feel like second-class citizens.

As we argued last week, those social tenants fortunate enough to get a property in one of the new blocks will not always want to have to foot extra service charge costs for fancy amenities, yet an outright ban preventing those that do want to pay is a different story.

The gym at Bermondsey Spa’s latest scheme The Exchange is out of bounds to both social tenants and residents of sharedownership properties.

Notting Hill Trust, who own the development, claim that leaseholder laws are not flexible enough to allow an opt-in opt-out service, yet Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport claims otherwise.

Given the housing shortage we face in Southwark and in London as a whole, it is perhaps a little futile to witter on about a select few denied gym and garden access when they have similar facilities on their doorstep. However the sentiment is an important one as ordinary working people are feeling continually pushed out of the inner city, which has been their home in some cases for generations.

And in a free society if you are prepared to pay for something, why should you be refused simply on the grounds of weather you were able to fork out excessive amounts of money for a property?

YCLIST CHIARA Giacomini death is a personal tragedy, but part of a growing problem on our streets that will not be solved unless a serious amount of money is spent on making our roads safer.

As the general election looms this should not be viewed as a singular issue that is often champion by the Greens and those in the environmental movement. Everyone is effect including motorists. It should not be a case of motorists’ virus cyclists as this is an infrastructure issue that will cost billions to solve. Can we afford it? Certainly morally in terms of the lives that have been taken and will continue to be taken – can we afford not to?

A GROUP of fitness fanatics have bared all in a cheeky attempt to raise money for a cancer charity.

Members of the Bootcamp SE16 group swapped push-ups for a photo-shoot in a charity calendar fundraiser for Wendy Gough Cancer Awareness Foundation, a organisation that highlights

cancer’s early warning signs.

Stephanie Henderson, Bootcamp SE16’s personal trainer, said: “Our group started off as just six people but has grown and grown and grown. Now it is huge with 140 regular members.

“As it grew I wanted to do something different with it, something important. I asked two friends to recommend a charity and they both mentioned Wendy immediately.

“Wendy Gough’s mission is to spread awareness about early signs of cancer after losing her son to the disease, and we want to do everything we can to help that.”

Mark Searle, one of the eleven men from the borough who took part in the bawdy benefit, was delighted with the result.

The Rotherhithe resident said: “It is for a great cause. It came about after we were laughing and joking about the boys doing a calendar.

We are all normal people, none of us are super models!

“It was a little bit awkward to be fair. We’ve all seen each other at our worst, covered in sweat or

mud, but it was a bit different seeing each other in tight black underwear.” The calendar is available for sale at: www.justgiving.com/bcse16calendar

Lorry driver ‘did not see cyclist’ - inquest

A LORRY driver did not see the cyclist who was killed by his HGV, an inquest heard this week.

Chiara Giacomini, 30, originally from Guildford in Surrey, but living in Dulwich, was killed following the accident which took place at Thurlow Park Road, near the junction of Gallery Road, in Dulwich back in 2013.

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: A female cyclist was taken to hospital after a collision with a lorry at the Elephant and Castle roundabout but suffered no lifethreatening injuries, police have said.

Police were called to the collision at 9.20am and said that the driver of the lorry had stopped at the scene.

The London Ambulance services were also in attendance at the scene.

The roundabout has the highest collision rate for cyclists as well as one of the city’s worst fatality records.

Plans for a £25 million revamp of the accident black spot was reported last year.

The former Tate Gallery worker was cycling just two miles from her home on September 6.

The lorry driver, Andrej Mauazurkiewicz, said: “I did not see any cyclist and I told the police I did not see her. The van driver was shouting at me and I said I didn’t see her.”

He later added: “I would like to express my great condolences to the family.”

Statements read in court by eye witness, Luke Davies, said: “She was turned and

tumbled like a rag doll. This whole thing only took a few moments. The driver’s speed was not excessive.”

A paramedic pronounced Miss Giacomini dead at the scene and the cause of death given was multiple traumatic injuries. CCTV footage from Dulwich Picture Gallery showed that the bicycle was 54 seconds ahead of the lorry but Mark Crouch, Police Staff Collision Investigator, said that crucially they do not know how long it took to cover the

distance to the junction. He said that it was “not possible to be conclusive”.

He added: “The lorry would have overtaken the cyclist. It moved very slowly. It would have been evident that it was moving right.”

Coroner, Dr Andrew Harris, said: “I accept his evidence and I conclude that the driver did not see the cyclist.”

The coroner decided not to make a recommendation for the prevention of future deaths, saying: “I do not see there is

any grounds for me to do so.”

Miss Giacomini’s sister, Serena, 30, described her as a “ray of sunshine”.

She said “As a family we are just devastated by the loss of Chiara and by the fact that there have been nine deaths in South London alone. Something really has to be done to make it safer.”

Serena also added: “I don’t know what the answer is but it’s not fair how many have to die and fundamentally we have to decide how they can co-exist.”

A separate incident on Monday at the Old Kent Road saw an elderly pedestrian taken to hospital after a collision with a car.

The man, thought to be in his late60s, was injured in the collision at the junction with Dunton Road at around 11.30am.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to a police spokesperson.

Roads were closed and buses diverted while police investigated the incident.

A CYCLIST was trapped under the wheels of a lorry after a collision in East Dulwich on Monday.

The woman’s foot became stuck after the incident at around 8.50am at Lordship Lane.

She was taken to hospital with minor injuries and no arrests were made, according to a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police.

SOCIAL HOUSING tenants will not be allowed to use a gym in a new Bermondsey development – even if they offer to pay a higher service charge to use it.

Notting Hill Housing Trust has come under fire after it emerged that the fitness facility at The Exchange in Spa Road is only open to leaseholders.

The gym at the Bermondsey Spa scheme is out of bounds to both council tenants and residents of shared-ownership properties.

Cllr Dr Ben Johnson highlighted the issue after being approached by a local resident.

He said: “We now discover that those who buy shared ownership properties in Southwark are treated as second class citizens, with segregated facilities only for those who buy outright.

“A resident I talked to has to walk past this empty gym which he is not allowed to use every day. It is actually located in the affordable housing block.

“Similar to poor doors, this policy sews division and tension amongst our residents and should not be allowed in the mixed and diverse community of Southwark.”

Katie Bond, Director of Notting Hill Home Ownership, told the News that leaseholder law is not flexible enough to allow an opt-in or an opt-out service.

“This means everyone or no one would pay. It is not reasonable to add the cost of the gym to all our shared ownership leaseholds so a small

number can use the gym,” she said.

However Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, rejected this sentiment.

He said: “Anyone who wants to use these facilities, and pay for them, should be able to.

“It appears that leaseholder law is not flexible enough to allow this to happen, which is disappointing. I hope Notting Hill continue to work on this and try to find a solution.”

Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, also called for an adjustment to the policy and urged the council to pressure the housing developers.

“Increasing the amount of affordable housing in Bermondsey and Southwark is my top priority.

“Shared ownership is a good way for people to get a foot on the housing ladder – but that should not come at the price of being made to feel like a second class citizen.

“We should not forget that the Labour-run Southwark council made a clear pledge to allow free access to leisure services – something it appears to not be able to deliver.”

The news follows reports last week that social housing tenants will not be allowed to use a shared garden at the luxury One Tower Bridge complex.

VINOPOLIS COULD be turned into a “fashion retail development”, like Carnaby Street and Seven Dials, in a £300 million investment.

The two-acre site, next to the famous foodie haven, Borough Market, could be turned into boutique stores.

Investment firm Meyer Bergman has joined forced with London developer, Sherwood Street Ltd, to acquire the leasehold of the site beneath the railway arches as well as the mixed-use building Thames House and other sites adjacent.

Tom Sherwood, founder of Sherwood Street Ltd, said: “We are looking to create a fashion retail development. You can’t buy a pair of jeans in Southwark! It’s an amazing site and we have been looking to launch a fashion scheme.”

“I am a Southwark based developer and with the right backing we think it could really work. I think it’s something everyone wanted.”

“We are working very closely with Borough Market and we don’t want to conflict with them at all. Think more Seven Dials and Carnaby Street.”

The partners have worked on initial proposals for the redevelopment in collaboration with the freehold owner of the site, Network Rail, and aim to submit a planning application with the support of Southwark Council. George WalshWaring, a Principal of Meyer Bergman, said: “This vibrant central London neighbourhood is undergoing rapid change and the retail offering is woefully inadequate given the needs of residents and the huge flow of tourists, commuters and office workers passing through every day. It is a signature investment for the fund and the proposed transformation will make a lasting and fitting contribution to the continued regeneration of this historic part of London when the scheme opens in 2018.” Meyer Bergman, a European investment and fund management firm, has invested in retail locations in London including Burlington Arcade as well as the Champs-Elysees in Paris. The firm is also managing the Westfield Bradford shopping centre development in northern England, which is due to open in December this year.

Knife-makers forging a career PECKHAM

SPARKS ARE flying at Peckham Rye station but it’s not the train tracks that are grinding us down – under the arches two friends are forging an unusual career.

Jon Ross-Harris and James Warshawsky, from Nunhead, are playing with fire under the station in Dovetail Court but it isn’t a cause for concern - they custom-make knives ranging from £80 to £400.

Before the pair moved into Blenheim Grove they had been working in their gardens and experimenting, but now they supply chef knives to customers James said: “It’s a unique forge that we made ourselves. It’s made of charcoal and coke (degassed coal).

We’re both inspired by Japanese techniques. I used to be a sushi chef and we were both quite interested in it - then we just started

experimenting.

“The way we started we didn’t shout about it because we were working so slowly. But it’s growing quite naturally.”

“We did the Pexmas market but we didn’t sell much. People go out with a fiver to buy a brownie, not to buy expensive knives!

“Looking back, the methods we used were insane!”

The demand for the knives has so far mainly been Peckham based but some interest from overseas has taken them by surprise.

“It’s mostly local but we’re getting some odd emails from strange places, even as far as America, and we posted one over.”

Jon says that being part of the Peckham community has been invaluable to them getting their trade off the ground.

“We’ve made some friends locally and they’ve brought us some wood which we use for the handles.”

Some of the wood comes from

nearby Nunhead cemetery, which the boys’ craft themselves along with the blades and customers often return following a purchase for a lesson on care for their knife.

“Being in Peckham makes a big difference”, says Jon. “There are lots of small businesses around who are extremely supportive. People just want to help - they don’t want anything out of it.”

A TEENAGER fined after pleading guilty to possession of a Class B drug says he is cutting down and hopes to become a personal trainer.

Terron Powell, 19, was approached by police in his car in Old Kent Road on September 9 last year.

When he was getting out of the car, Powell, of Moorside Road, Bromley, fiddled with his sock, causing a small bag of cannabis to fall into the foot well.

Upon searching the car police found two more bags of cannabis, including 24.2 grams hidden beneath the leather cover of the car’s gear stick.

His defending solicitor told said: “He had been using cannabis very heavily, smoking on a daily basis sometimes four or five bags.”

A PIECE of artwork by notorious graffiti artist, Banksy, will be maintained when the site in Bermondsey is redeveloped.

The Haring-Dog mural first appeared on the blank wall on The Grange in 2010, and features a barking dog and a man in a hooded top.

Artist Joe Guner Yusuf Ozlala, who owns the site, said that the plan is to keep the artwork but there is no plan to start the building yet.

Southwark’s planning sub-committee unanimously approved plans for a seven-storey development at the corner of Grange Road and The Grange, which will include 20 flats, seven of which will be affordable homes, and commercial units.

Grange Ward Councillor, Lucas Green, said: “I think that most local people would like to keep it.”

Cllr Green, who says that the development has been given the go ahead, also added: “The nature of Banksy is that a lot of them are on old buildings that might not be around forever and that’s part of the beauty of it.”

Acid reflux claim on drink driving charge

A PECKHAM man charged with drink-driving has been granted a special reasons hearing after claiming that his acid reflux affected the breathalyser test.

Anthony Graeham, 41, was stopped at Seldon Road on October 19 last year and was found to be exceeding the driving limit with 57 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath.

His defence solicitor has been granted eight weeks to produce a medical report confirming the link between acid reflux and incorrect breath tests.

Alleged race attack

A 49-YEAR-OLD, who was charged with racially aggravated assault and provocation in Rotherhithe, has been granted bail ahead of his trial.

Peter-John Haworth, of Harringay Road, Haringey, pleaded not guilty to the two charges when he appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court last Thursday morning.

He was accused of hitting twice with his bag and of using raciallyabusive language in an unprovoked attack on January 28 in Deal Porters Way. He was released on bail with the condition that he does not contact the alleged victim.

His trial was listed for April 17 at Greenwich Magistrates Court.

Shop lifting to pay heating bill

A MAN, who tried to walk out of a supermarket without paying for £228.78 worth of groceries, has received a conditional discharge.

Darren Bond, 43, of Northlands Street, Camberwell, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop after the incident at Sainsbury’s in Dog Kennel Hill on January 28.

His solicitor said that his client had fallen on hard times and was trying to make money by selling on some of the food.

He said: “It is very cold in London where he lives and he needed the money for the heating.”

He was also trying to save up to buy a cooker.

Bond had been released from prison in November. A representative from the Prisoner

Advice and Care Trust, an organisation who helps prisoners upon their release, spoke in his defence.

He said: “This is a one-off and he will rebuild himself. I’m very impressed with the guy, he’s exceeded my expectations.”

‘Poundland asault’

A 20-YEAR-OLD man and a youth have pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and shoplifting.

Shahan Ali, of Perry Vale, Lewisham, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named were accused of stealing two energy drinks from the Poundland in Rye Lane, Peckham, on January 13. They were also charged with assaulting a man at the store.

The pair denied both counts and will be tried at Croydon Magistrates Court on August 13.

They have both been granted bail with the conditions that they do not contact each other or visit the Rye Lane Poundland store.

After the eviction, protesters began occupying a different block, which does not fall under Southwark Council’s Interim Possession Order that was granted on Monday morning.

A Tweet from the group said: “The new block is strong! Thanks for all who came down, couldn't have held it without you! Solidarity!”

A police spokesperson said: “A number of people voluntarily left the premises; some did not. Six people were arrested for a variety of criminal offences - all six remain in custody at south London police stations.”

A housing campaign group stated that despite the eviction, the movement would continue.

Tanya Murat, head of Southwark Defend Council Housing, said: “The campaign isn’t over. It’s never going to be the case that one occupation changes everything, but what this has done is raised awareness and made people

realise that they can resist and fight back.”

The squatters have been occupying the Aylesbury since January 31 in protest at the estate’s planned demolition.

Councillor Mark Williams, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport said: “These squatters do not represent the residents of the Aylesbury and are risking the delivery of the very homes they claim to be campaigning for, for the people they claim to be campaigning for.”

BERMONDSEY:Detectives investigating a popular video piracy website arrested three men in Bermondsey during a dawn operation on Tuesday, writes Joey Millar..

The men, aged 26, 25 and 24, were arrested at a residential address at Enid Street on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud, copyright theft, and encouraging or assisting offences.

Police executed a search warrant at the property and recovered digital equipment and financial documents.

Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Neil Reynolds, said: “The site was extremely popular. It was viewed about 70,000 times a day and, internationally, it ranked thousands of places higher than a well-known and legitimate film download site.

“It can be difficult for people to care about copyright laws being broken, but the money made from such sites is often spent on funding other crime. We are looking at how much money was made from advertising on this website and where that money went to.”

ARMED POLICE arrested two men in Elephant and Castle as part of a major operation.

At around 6pm on Tuesday night a car was stopped on Walworth Road.

A Met Police spokesperson said that two men had been arrested on behalf of another police force and taken into custody.

Twitter was abuzz with reports of flashing lights and armed police, as people warned others to avoid the area.

Will Martin posted: “Armed police

and lots of lights on the Walworth Road, Elephant and Castle right now.

No idea what's happening.”

Another wrote: “Well something has happened on Walworth Road to stop all traffic going Southbound from the Elephant.”

Robin Holley warned others: “Avoid top of Walworth Road. Armed police, fire engines, ambulances, the lot” Another witness tweeted: “Police with guns, fire engines and so much traffic and drama. What the hell is happening at elephant and castle?”

The spokesperson was unable to say which force the Met were acting on behalf of due to operational reasons.

HUNDREDS TO BE HOUSED IN FORMER DUMP

DEVELOPERS OF the former refuse depot at Manor Place have unveiled plans to build 270 residential homes, with 37 per cent of these providing affordable housing.

A mix of market, intermediate and affordably priced housing was revealed at public exhibitions held yesterday and today by Notting Hill Housing, which disclosed final proposals for the site.

Commercial space will also be created by using existing under-utilised buildings and within the railway arches that cut through the site.

Listed heritage structures at 33 Manor Place and the neighbouring former Pool Building will be retained for residential and commercial uses respectively.

The facade and structure of the Coroner’s Court at 17-21 Manor Place will also be retained.

There will also be a primary pedestrian and cycle route running along the viaduct with restricted vehicle access across the site.

Kelly Harris, Planning Manager at Notting Hill Housing, said: “We would like to thank everyone in the local community who has provided feedback at the various consultation events in June, August and October.

“We are delighted to share our revised plans which have been updated in response to the feedback we received throughout the comprehensive consultation process.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has launched a new online planning system to improve the way members of the public, developers and organisations can access and comment on thousands of applications.

The new system will make it easier to process the comments the council receives each week from residents and other interested parties on planning applications in their area.

The system will update information every 24 hours and comments can be made directly from the webpage.

Users, who can create a log in, will get notifications when there are changes to applications that they are tracking.

Councillor Mark Williams, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: "We deal with a wide range of planning applications, from multi-million pound regeneration and development schemes to residents’ own home improvements. The new online portal will make it easier and more

efficient to process around 600 comments we receive each week on these applications.

WATCHDOG OFCOM has confirmed it will review Royal Mail’s refusal to deliver to a block of flats without being escorted by a 69-year-old woman.

The decision to stop deliveries to the building came after an alleged attack on a postman in the summer of last year.

Though a woman was arrested in connection with the allegation, she was never prosecuted.

Seven months on and there appears to be no

suggestion of a return to a normal postal service.

An incident was also reported

to the police that the tyres of the Royal Mail vehicle were slashed whilst parked in the vicinity of Rowland Hill House on December 17.

The News reported in January that the postal service company has been providing an escorted delivery arrangement on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, which required Cllr Linforth-Hall, 69, to act as chaperone.

Having reached the third and final stage of an appeal process invoked by Southwark Council, Ofcom will undertake a review of the case and once completed, make a decision.

An Ofcom spokesperson said: “Ofcom has received an appeal in relation to this case, and we will take a decision on the appeal in due course.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “From October 2014, with assistance from a local Councillor, mail deliveries resumed to residents three times a week. As this assistance cannot be provided long-term, we have written to residents to propose alternative delivery arrangements.

“We are awaiting a response from residents regarding their preferred course of action. We continue to work with the Council to find a way for our postmen to resume deliveries to the block safely and without any further incident.

A CHARITY is urging owners to neuter their cats as they struggle with unwanted pets.

This week the Celia Hammond Rescue Trust released pictures of animals including four-year-old Minx who amazingly has had a total of 42 kittens and is a grandmother and great grandmother to many more.

She was taken in by the trust after her owners moved from Peckham to a new property where pets were not allowed.

The trust has reported that animal charities in London are struggling to cope with the increasing number of unwanted and stray cats.

Nine animal charities including RSPCA, Cats Protection, Battersea Cats and Dogs Home and the Celia Hammond Animal Trust have come together to try and make a

difference by asking people to show that they care by neutering their cats to protect against accidental litters.

The Celia Hammond Rescue Trust is celebrating World Spay Day on February 24 by offering free neutering to the first 30 cats (males and females) belonging to owners on a low income or benefits who are booked in for neutering on the day.

Over 70,000 homes in danger according to insurance firm

SOUTHWARK HAS more properties in danger of flooding than any other borough in London, a study has revealed.

There are 73,599 homes which have been flagged up as ‘at risk’, according to insurance company Groundsure.

This accounts for 46% of all homes in Southwark, the third highest percentage in the capital.

Dan Montagnani, managing director at Groundsure, said: “We all remember the human stories from flooding that everybody wants to avoid. Insurance is essential but it can’t replace those precious photos or months of disruption while your home dries out.

“It is essential that you consider the history of flooding in the area you are thinking of buying a home - not just from rivers but also how the land and sewer systems have coped with sudden deluges.”

Policing award for ‘tireless work’

SOUTHWARK: A Southwarkbased survivor of the 1987 King’s Cross fire received an award at the annual Excellence in Total Policing Award last week.

Special Inspector Daemonn Brody received the Special Constable of the Year award at a ceremony in central London on Feb 10.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Leading by example, he has averaged 1,200 hours a year over the last five years.

“His tireless work and unwavering enthusiasm has helped to improve already high levels of performance at Southwark.” Within five days of arriving in London from Scotland in 1987, Special Inspector Brody was badly injured in the disaster that killed 31 people.

Lift out of action at London Bridge

LONDON BRIDGE: There will be no lift from the Jubilee line platforms at London Bridge from next Tuesday until summer.

Lift replacement work means there will be no step-free access at the station to the Jubilee line until August. There will also be no stepfree access at the interchange between the Jubilee and Northern lines.

But don’t expect to be seeing any winged horses, as The Hope and John the Unicorn are the latest ventures for south east London pub group, Antic London.

The first of the new watering holes, The Hope on Melon Road, will

launch next month, and takes its name from a pub which once pulled pints round the corner on Rye Lane.

The Hope will be “café/bar in style and a traditional pub in approach” and will serve a selection of real ales and a seasonal British menu.

The second venture, John the Unicorn, will open later this year.

‘They didn’t know where the next meal was coming from, but they felt like kings’ BERMONDSEY

Author pens book on nan’s stories of growing up in 1920s Bermondsey and Rotherhithe

A MEMOIR published next week will tell the “heartbreaking” story of growing up in gritty, inter-war Bermondsey.

We Ain’t Got No Drink, Pa details the childhood adventures of Hilda Kemp, who spent her youth battling poverty, boredom and her alcoholic, abusive father.

Her early life was one of turmoil, excitement and fear. As the oldest child, she was constantly forced to protect her siblings from her father’s fists, which were well-honed after years of bare-knuckle brawling on the Old Kent Road.

Born on The Grange in 1921, she spent her early days exploring the streets of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe balancing freedoms and responsibilities alien to today’s children.

Showing a bright entrepreneurial spirit, she would create dolls out of wooden pegs and sell them for pennies to local children, or sneak onto coal barges tied up at the docks and make off with handfuls for use at home.

Other times she would plead with watermen at the Rotherhithe docks to take her and her siblings for trips up the Thames – although the joy of these adventures were always somewhat tempered by Hilda’s inevitable seasickness.

“They didn’t know where the next meal was coming from but they also felt like kings, running wild across the docklands and playing on the barges,” says Cathryn Kemp, who wrote the book in the first-person through the eyes of her late grandmother.

Hilda passed away twelve years ago and it was her dying wish that

Her father’s wages were not enough to keep up with both his alcoholism and the rent, so the family fled their home at The Grange in a midnight flit. They moved to 42 Spa Road and would later re-locate

The book also details Hilda’s experiences of fascism and war. Her father was one of the dockers who drove the British Union of Fascists’ Blackshirts out of Bermondsey, while World War 2 bombing raids were spent huddling in the bowels of London Bridge Station – singing, playing games and giggling due to the nerves and surrealism of the situation.

Cathryn says: “Writing the book was an amazing experience. I could hear her voice, and I felt her stories as my own. A few times I even felt her scold me or raise an eyebrow at what I was writing.”

Despite passing away over a decade ago, Hilda’s influence and character remains.

Cathryn says: “She was a classic East London matriarch, the last of her kind. She was scary but with a massive heart and possessed fierce love for her family.”

Cathryn says: “She survived

The family evacuated after their home was nearly hit by a German bomb.

She finally escaped her abusive father by fleeing back to London, where she was sheltered by her fiancée’s parents. Together they waited out the war, and Hilda married Albert the year it ended and he returned from battle.

Over a decade after her death, Cathryn believes that this book is the perfect final chapter to her grandmother’s life.

She says: “It’s really magical. She’s got a voice, something ordinary women from south-east London didn’t have when she was growing up. I’m so excited for her.”

Artist who survived stroke donates work to hospital DULWICH

A STROKE survivor from East Dulwich has donated three pieces of her own artwork to the hospital that saved her life.

In June 2009, Charlotte Cowes Cattrell collapsed after suffering three days of intense migraines.

She was rushed to King’s College Hospital, where doctors used a metal tube to unblock an artery in her brain – one of the first times this treatment had ever been used on a stroke victim.

Despite having to learn to walk and talk again, Charlotte’s artistic skills were not affected by the stroke, something she credits her medical team with.

“The surgeons and doctors were absolutely brilliant, and I had such a brilliant recovery. Within a few weeks I was working again and after nine months I had an exhibition.”

The three pieces she has donated to the Friends Stroke Unit at King’s are named Love, Hope and Luck.

She said: “The three pieces of artwork represent the three feelings that have been strongest throughout my ordeal – love, hope and luck – and I hope they will provide love, hope

The artworks were created from cotton fibres, which were used to create 3D designs and then painted.

Maria Fitzpatrick, Nurse Consultant in Stroke Management at King’s, said: “We’re so pleased that Charlotte has made such a good recovery – her story highlights the importance of specialist stroke units like King’s and the benefits of treating patients

quickly. King’s place at the top of a 2014 national audit shows how the hard work of the entire stroke team is making a difference to patients like Charlotte.

“Her kind artwork donation will be a great addition to the stroke unit that we hope patients will appreciate for years to come.”

King’s stroke unit was recently named as the best-performing unit in the country.

WHAT DO you get if you take 50,000 Lego bricks, 100 local primary school children and two politicians?

An event held at Dulwich Hamlet Football Club got students, along with Dame Tessa Jowell MP and Council Leader Cllr Peter John, to design and build their dream school.

The event, held by organisers SPACE Southwark, is part of a campaign for the Dulwich Hospital site to be used for a new secondary school to meet the pressing need for places from 2016.

A petition by SPACE now has

over 600 signatures from parents and the two schools bidding to open a secondary school have support from over 2,000 locals.

Catherine Rose, Chair of the parent led steering group that organised the event said: “It’s been awesome! I'm so proud of all the children who have worked hard and played so well today. The children of SE22 and SE15 would love a new secondary school, and they have sent Nicky Morgan [the Secretary of State for Education] a huge big Lego shaped Valentine message, I hope the Department for Education hears them!”

A decision on whether a new secondary school has been approved is expected shortly.

Great-grandmother forced to sleep on chair in kitchen during infestation

A BOROUGH family’s bed bug nightmare has finally ended after a Southwark charity stepped in to donate a bed.

Ill great-grandmother Sandra Clarke, 68, was forced to sleep in a chair in her kitchen after her flat was overrun by the biting bugs for ten months.

Last week the flat was finally cleared of the insects’ invasion, although the damage had already been done to furniture by the swarm.

After reading the story in the News,

The Mayor of Southwark’s Common Goods Trust approached the family and offered to donate a new bed.

When told of the donation, Sandra’s granddaughter Laura McKelvey said: “That is really nice. It’s great that people out there are trying to help. Thank you.”

The charity is run by John Wallington, 78, who is also Secretary of the Traders’ Association and spent decades running two stalls at East Street market.

He said: “We are a group of people who, over the last 35 years or so, help people in need in Southwark.

We help people at every stage of

their lives, from the cradle to the grave.

“We haven’t got millions of pounds but anything we can help with – a new cooker, a bed, funeral costs – is worth it.”

A WALWORTH primary school class went on a field trip to an Oxfordshire farm last week – without ever leaving their school grounds.

BOROUGH MARKET hosted a flipping great event on Tuesday as the capital’s pancake-lovers got together to raise money for charity.

Teams from across London competed in the annual charity pancake race, while the title of Master Flipper was also up for grabs.

Money raised went towards Paintings in Hospitals, a charity

that provides art as visual and creative inspiration for patients.

The market’s managing director Keith Davis said: “Borough Market is a place where people come to enjoy great food and experience the vibrant atmosphere, and the annual pancake race is the perfect opportunity to have some fun with our local community and celebrate this great British tradition.”

Year 1 pupils from Surrey Square School were transported to the farm through Online Field Trip, an innovative new learning technology which can be used to teach children about matters far from their classroom.

Using a video screen, the children met farmer Jean-Paul during their virtual trip and learned all about how eggs are laid, collected and packed ready for the shops.

The pupils were able to talk to him and ask questions via the screen.

They also took part in activities using in-class materials with the help of instructions given on-screen.

Teacher Stephen Moseley said: “I thought the children really enjoyed the experience. They loved cracking

Colour of Harriet’s pink bus is bit of a red herring

POLITICIANS AND media commentators are criticising Harriet Harman for choosing a pink bus to travel round the UK appealing to women voters.

Some say it’s patronising, and a Barbie colour.

The colour of her bus is a bit of a red (should that be pink?) herring.

What matters to her constituents is that she will be spending yet more time away from the constituency desperately trying to shore up the Labour vote elsewhere.

She has become complacent about her vote here in Camberwell & Peckham and many voters think her out of touch with their needs.

It’s time for a change, which is one of the many reasons I’m

standing for election in Camberwell & Peckham.

Where does Cllr Morris stand on One Tower Bridge decision?

I WAS somewhat confused by Cllr Adele Morris’ contradictory quotes to the press regarding the recent planning committee decision about garden access at One Tower Bridge.

First Cllr Morris appeared to have concerns about the proposal and was quoted saying “to the outsider this could look as if this is the private residents are being a bit snooty and saying 'we don't really want the Corporation of London tenants using our space'”.

Despite these concerns, Cllr Morris in fact voted to approve the proposals at the planning committee.

When a council spokesperson then suggested that the council would look again at the decision, Cllr Morris described this as ‘shameful’, saying "The decision was taken by the planning committee…and is legally binding. The council does not have the authority to change the decision.” At least now it seems pretty clear where Cllr Morris stands on this decision.

But in the South London Press this week, Cllr Morris gave another contradictory quote, saying “The members [of the planning committee] were put in an uncomfortable situation in being asked to make this decision.”

Cllr Morris is clearly trying to cover herself from all angles – first she said she had concerns about the proposal, then she voted for it, then she slammed the council for even suggesting that the decision could be looked at again, before finally backtracking and saying she had been ‘uncomfortable’ making the decision in the first place!

Cllr Morris should stop misleading residents by trying to present herself as being against a proposal which

she actually voted for.

This is yet another example of the Lib Dems trying to be all things to all people - in fact they're simply proving they can't be trusted by anyone.

The council were right to have a Holocaust web ban

I READ with astonishment the call by some people to give unfettered access to sites containing Holocaust information.

It seems, sadly, those people who want unrestrained access have scarcely given any thoughts to our children who use Library facilities in Southwark quite frequently.

I have four children and will not give them access to such materials without parental guidance or control especially, now that there are other schools of thoughts and thousands of websites that hold contrary views to WWII holocaust.

I know a child who recently viewed a short clip on Youtube of the massacre of school children in Northern Nigeria by Boko Haram; this child is still traumatized so, imagine the likely psychological damage an unrestrained access to a controversial subject like the holocaust can cause.

Have they even thought that young users may end in a Holocaust denial site?

I think the status quo in Southwark libraries should be vigorously maintained and any adult who needs to access any such information should speak to staff or apply for a higher level access. What next... access to pornography?

As for the person asking that Cllr Dixon-Fyle be removed from the cabinet, nothing could be more ridiculous. Cllr Dixon-Fyle is an excellent councillor who we are lucky to have in Southwark.

US SERVICES are a regular feature of my email inbox, and with two bus strikes in recent weeks and more on the horizon, this essential form of London transport has been brought to the forefront of our minds more than ever.

Large swathes of my constituency are not served by the tube, and with the ongoing issues at London Bridge making rail services less reliable, more people than ever are turning to our bus service to get around. The recent strikes have highlighted how important the bus network is and how many people rely on it.

Under the current Mayor, investment in London’s bus service has flatlined for several years and we are now seeing the effects of this. I regularly receive complaints about overcrowded buses and delays, particularly on routes serving mainly residential areas. Local councillors in Rotherhithe are currently petitioning for improvements to the C10 route, for example, something which I fully support. This is a busy route which provides key links for a lot of residents, and has been known to by-pass the Rotherhithe peninsula altogether on some occasions when delays mean the route has to be cut short – this is clearly not acceptable and something must be done.

Only now are we seeing a bit more wiggle room in TfL’s bus spending, and have been achieving some ‘wins’ such as the extension of the 136 to Elephant and Castle to relieve pressure on the 343 – a result achieved after several years of concerted campaigning from local residents groups and councillors. Recently after pointing out the problem with overcrowded buses, and passengers being left behind on the Old Kent Road TfL agreed to extend the bus route 415 from Elephant & Castle station to Old Kent Road, Tesco. I do hope that the penny has now dropped for TfL’s leadership and similar improvements elsewhere will be a bit easier to secure.

The strikes have certainly focussed the minds of bus passengers on how valuable this service is, and I’d now like to highlight the situation of those drivers.

Newly qualified drivers in particular earn low wages and the terms and conditions of pay varies between the various bus operators – meaning drivers doing the same job may not be paid the same amount as another driver doing the same job elsewhere.

It’s time now for the Mayor to bring people to the negotiating table instead of relinquishing his responsibility for ensuring our bus drivers are fairly paid.

It’s his failure to do this which has regrettably led to these strikes, and the resulting inconvenience and difficulty for passengers.

FROM WEST Midlands to the West Coast, Dudley-born James Whale cut a swathe through the secretive, underground gay scene, having his naughty way with all and sundry if Gods and Monsters is to be believed, writes Michael Holland...

Russell Labey has written and directed this piece seemingly as homage not just to Whale but to all those gay men and women who were under threat of prison and shame if their secret ever got out. In honour, too, of those horror films that filled our dreams as youngsters.

It begins with a flash and a bang as lightning strikes. A film backdrop shows young men enjoying themselves around a pool. Whale, superbly brought to life in a tremendous performance by Ian Gelder, is being interviewed by a young man whose only interest is film director Whale’s Frankenstein films, but Whale, now in the

twilight of his life wants to be remembered for more: ‘Showboat was my favourite,’ he tells the boy while luring him into nudity…

Through flashbacks we see Whale’s early life: his time in the trenches after enlisting for The Great War, his first loves; then we see him in more recent days with his doctor discussing his recent strokes and brain problems that can’t be cured. He thinks about how Frankenstein’s Monster had a brain put into his skull and curses the doctor for not having the power to perform such miracles. A notorious flirt and gossip, we hear a few gems about life behind the camera in 1930s Hollywood.

But this is not about decadent Hollywood, it is about a man whose only demons now are those in his head as he flits in and out of reality. Oh yes, Whale still has his desires but the body is hardly able. Knowing this he ensnares the shockingly buff gardener into helping him find a way to eternal peace.

Clayton Boone’s Death Before Dishonour tattoo almost instigates a fatality!

A minimal set was ample when sound and vision added to its effect. Good performances from all in this, pretty much, non-stop production, created a very enjoyable evening. An extra clap of appreciation goes to Joey Phillips for getting naked in his first adult professional stage debut. Well done, that brave young man.

In another theatre under a railway arch, once again we find some of the best work London has to offer.

I THOUGHT the auditorium was designed like one of those US redneck bars where bikers play pool in the background and a lone woman at the bar asks, ‘Wanna buy a girl a drink, stranger?’ which usually leads to a mass brawl, writes Michael Holland...

In fact, as was pointed out by my theatre companion, the set was what you would see while on a US road trip along impossibly straight and lonely highways that only seem to have biker bars and isolated gas stations.

Paula Vogel’s How I Learned To Drive is really ‘How I Got Messed Up By My Family’, with L’il Bit’s clan as dysfunctional as they come. The story begins in 1969, a time when incestuous paedophilia was pretty much kept hush hush, although all families know about the dodgy uncle. ‘I thought paedophilia was about bike-riding,’ says L’il Bit. L’il Bit’s tale is told in a succession of flashbacks and flash-forwards in no chronological order, so the pieces have to playwright Enrique Jardiel Poncela. be put together as best you can. At the interval I was so put out by the play’s disjointedness I was ready to leave, but with a more perceptive partner very much liking it, I was convinced to stay. This is a Pulitzer Prize winner, so maybe I was turning into a redneck myself!

‘Family is family’ seemed to be the mantra that got the womenfolk through and helped them stay above the misogyny and misery in their lives. Grandma, walking around bow-legged, spoke of grandpa wanting sex ‘every morning and every night, and even came home at lunch to have it!’ Though she never enjoyed it.

Poor L’il bit didn’t have a chance because, at 13, she had the body of a 20 year old. Uncle Peck, who was already sorting out all the local wives, began his grooming of her. Factor in the mixed messages she was getting from the different generations of women in the family and you can see how her life was doomed from an early age.

She does eventually escape away to

college, where she realises how messed up she is, but by then it is all too late.

I am glad I stayed until the end, as this is a very powerful piece of work. Olivia Poulet had a slightly nervous start as she struggled with her accent, but went on to give a triumphant performance. All the cast give their best here because the writing deserves it and demands good work from the actors. They, in return, were up for the task.

There are some laughs to lighten the mood but at the end, when you get the big reveal, you wish you hadn’t found those bits quite so funny.

SCIENCE FOR kids, so it said on the press release, but once in the auditorium it seemed that the young folk were outnumbered by the grown ups, and once the show began I could see why. With so much interactive movement going on in Physical Science these shrewd people had found the perfect workout for a fraction of what a gym would charge, writes Michael Holland...

That’s not the truth, but the adults were out in force and having the time of their lives, as well as the kids.

Narrator Zosia Jo is excellent at getting even the shyest child to participate, and the two dancers, Sarah Hitch and Justyna Sochaj, lead the dance in a way that everyone can follow.

The ‘She He Barman’ of Southwark

MARY ANN Walker was born in 1842 in Hertfordshire but by the end of the century when records of her disappeared in 1890, she would be better known by the name Thomas Walker, the “She He Barman” of Southwark.

Mary was one of three sisters raised in the Home Counties but her future transformation would see her make a brand new name for herself in the capital. From a young age she had dressed in male clothes and worked in her father’s pub pulling pints but when her father Henry died in 1860, she threw off all womanly counterparts and became male fulltime to make ends meet. While her sisters had found work as housekeeper and governess, Mary, using the names John Walker or John Turner, began working as a porter at Jesus College, Cambridge, and then later as a booking clerk with the London and North-Western Railway. Subsequent jobs included working as an engine cleaner for the Great Northern Railway at King’s Cross Station, two years spent as a ship’s steward for the Cunard Line, dock labourer and light porter at a cheesemongers in London.

Throughout this time Walker’s aunt made some attempts to reclaim her niece but had been unsuccessful.

It was not until 1867 that the name Thomas Walker began to be used, when he became a barman in the Royal Mortar Tavern in the London Road, Southwark.

But disaster struck in this new guise as bartender when Thomas was accused of stealing monies after marked coins were found in his possession and he was remanded.

When Walker was taken to prison the gaoler described him as having a

full masculine face, rather sunburnt, hair cut short and slightly curled and a masculine speaking voice.

Others in the prison did not suspect anything unusual, assuming they had a young man in their custody and it was only when he was ordered to take a bath that he confessed to being female.

Thomas pleaded guilty to the two charges of embezzlement and was sentenced to three month’s imprisonment with hard labour.

Upon release Walker was sent to the Elizabeth Fry Refuge in Hackney – an institute for the reformation of women prisoners– but was rejected due to his male appearance.

He changed his name to Charles Arnold and obtained work with the Great Western Railway but when he became ill his landlady, whilst tending to him, discovered that he was female and Thomas left the following day.

Misfortune befell Walker once more when whilst busking in March 1868, he was arrested and charged with placing oneself in a public thoroughfare, called Cable Street, Whitechapel with the intention of asking and collecting alms. He was consequently sent to the workhouse in St George-in-the-East.

However three months later fortunes turned in his favour when he began to be advertised as “Mary Walker, the Female Barman” using his birth name for the first time publicly in many years.

Walker sang onstage at the Marylebone Music Hall where “she was dressed in men’s clothes, and gave a sort of auto-biographical recitation to the tune of ‘Champagne Charley’ and made a second appearance in naval uniform”.

In this newfound fame and notoriety Thomas was marketing himself as: “Miss Mary Walker, the world-

renowned Female Barman, begs to inform Publicans &c., she is now open to an Engagement. Terms moderate. Highest references given.”

A ballad written in 1871 immortalised Thomas as the “She He Barman of Southwark”.

This fondness for cross-dressing was not limited to the public houses of Southwark. Elsewhere in the borough a Peckham pair were making a name for themselves.

Ernest Boulton and Frederick William Park, under the stage names Stella Clinton (or Mrs Graham) and Fanny Winifred Park, toured in theatres as a popular double act but were blighted by a police campaign in 1870 that threatened to bring the duo to ruin.

In their alter egos the ladies were the belles of the ball and were frequently invited to dine and dance with the fashionable elite.

Stella, known as the pretty one, received fourteen bouquets in one performance and the pair were considered pioneers of the new glamour drag. They were photographed for postcards which were greatly in demand.

The duo socialised in many high places including the Burlington Arcade, known at the time as a destination for high class prostitutes.

But in 1870 the ladies were seen leaving a house in Wakefield Street, near Regent Square, by a police detective, who followed them as they took a cab to the Strand Theatre. They were arrested and physically examined in an attempt to prove that they were sexually active gay men.

They were dragged before Bow Street Magistrates Court, still in their dresses and charged with 'conspiring and inciting persons to commit an unnatural offence'.

In newspaper coverage the pair

became known as the He-She Ladies and despite the controversy, public opinion was supportive of their case and sensitive to the poor treatment they had received throughout.

Despite their popularity and prevalence for many years prior to the trial, Britain had become uneasy in the midst of a Republican movement and they were desperate to put these men in their place.

There was great public interest in the case and both the Attorney General and the Solicitor General appeared for the prosecution. The 'unnatural offence’ of committing a homosexual act could not be proved and in the absence of this the prosecution was stuck for a crime. Since wearing

women’s clothing was not in itself an offence the jury found them not guilty.

Fanny and Stella later moved to Lisbon and then New York.

Stepping in to this tapas bar, just a stone’s throw from Borough Market, I was immediately greeted by the warm and inviting scent of searing meat and spices.

A leg of air-dried ham hung in the corner of the bar, above which were cubby holes filled with different coloured wine bottles.

Vast windows looked out to the hoards of office workers and tourists marching, running or strolling past, dividing the chaos of the city and this lively little slice of Spain.

Virtually all of the candlelit, wooden tables were full - to my right, a gaggle of girlfriends sipped on Cava, while on my left men in suits were tearing holes in a platter of meat.

I was surrounded by a hubbub chatter, laughter, the occasional ding of a bell in the kitchen.

It felt just as a tapas bar should be.

Opened ten years ago, Tapas Brindisa is the first of the restaurants run by Spanish produce suppliers Brindisa.

Soho, South Kensington and Shoreditch swiftly followed suit, and Piccadilly Circus and Barcelona are next in line to open restaurants.

It’s not cheap - but then really good Iberian ingredients aren’t.

A plate of aged air-dried ham will set you back £19.50 - but it melts on the tongue and is made from happy pigs raised in pure piggy heaven.

My waiter, Vincenzo, leaned in as he explained that the Bellota ham is the strongest, so should be eaten last from the plate.

“Bellota is made from Pata Negra pigs,” he said, putting down the wooden board laden with three different types of ham.

“They are fed on acorns for the last three months of their lives. You can see that the ham looks oilier than the other two, and that’s from the acorns.”

Between mouthfuls of the sweetest ham, I tucked into juicy olives stuffed with fresh orange, and a plate of Padron peppers.

These shrivelled little green bites tend to be spicier in summer months, so my winter crop had just a pleasant hint of warmth.

Slightly charred on the outside, they were hot, salty and slightly bitter within - and incredibly moreish.

I’d just polished off the last one when a dark and fearsome thing arrived - a heap of black rice, topped with one alien-like fried squid.

But one mouthful was enough to calm my nerves - the rice was heavenly smooth and fragrant, having been cooked in fish broth and squid ink.

It was complemented perfectly by a spoonful of garlic aioli on the side.

This is one of this branch’s signature dishes (unavailable in other Brindisa restaurants) and is well worth a try, being both unusual and just the right amount of flavouring for what’s essentially a plate of rice.

The octopus offered a hearty mouthful - meaty and flavoured with smoky paprika - and the prawns were big, juicy and scattered with herbs.

Tortilla - a fist-sized wedge of it was served cold but was filling, creamy and well-seasoned.

All this had prepared me for the star of the show - and something I’d not paid much attention to on the extensive menu.

Cheese lovers, neglect the deep fried Monte Enebro at your peril.

The warm, log-shaped slab was presented encased in a blue cheese crust - its own natural, strongly flavoured rind.

The tangy taste was perfectly complemented by the sweet, sticky honey that was oozing from the top, down the sides and all around the

It was a perfect plate combining all things smooth, sticky, and - thanks to some decorative beetroot crisps crunch.

No need for a desert after such an indulgent finale, I thought, draining my sherry and rolling back out into the cold London air.

Next time I need an authentic Spanish tapas fix, I’ll know where to come.

FREE SCHOOLS DAY OUT AT KIA OVAL

SURREY CCC would like to invite all schools to attend an LV= County Championship match at the Kia Oval entirely free of charge on our annual Schools’ Day, which will be on Tuesday June 2nd.

Schools’ Day will take place during the third day of Surrey’s four day match with Lancashire at the Kia Oval. The day’s play will start at 11am and continue until 6pm. Schools are free to arrive and

leave at their convenience between those times.

We can offer each school free tickets for up 50 people (including staff and pupils) to attend the game.

To help us run the day effectively, we recommend that schools bring one adult member of staff for every 15 pupils they are planning to bring. If a school requires more tickets than this, please contact us and let us know as we can often accommodate larger requests.

During the day, pupils will be able to watch the match from their seats in the stands and participate in a number of engaging and enjoyable activities that will

teach them about cricket and give them the chance to experience the game for themselves in a safe and secure environment. Every pupil will then leave the Kia Oval with a free souvenir of Surrey County Cricket Club – a little something to remember the day by!

In previous years, Schools’ Days have been a great success, with up to 5,000 children having fun whilst they continue to learn. As well as a great day’s cricket, last year featured a special assembly given by Sir Trevor McDonald, animals from nearby Vauxhall City Farm and a chance to get autographs from both male and female International cricketers.

SOUTHWARK TIGERS enjoyed one of their busiest days ever at Burgess Park last weekend as the junior rugby club continues to go from strength to strength.

The club now run a large number of age group sides and this season they have developed their first ever all female side, although girls have played in mixed teams before this year.

A club spokeswoman said: “We had teams visiting from Colfes, Hackney, Maidstone and Mitcham.

We had two games on the big pitch with what seemed like hundreds of little kids in a variety of team

colours took over various other parts of Burgess Park.

“All teams played matches and all players from all the teams got to play. Many visitors, who now live outside London, talked about taking the scenic route to the Old Kent Road, reminiscing about days spent in living and working in Southwark.”

She added: “Well done to all the teams for getting to us. Well done to Tigers players, coaches and volunteers. We were not overawed by the numbers down to great planning including anticipating the unexpected.”

WELTERWEIGHT JOHNNY Garton will make the first defence of his Southern Area crown on March 14 at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

They finally got back in the contest through Daniel Diangana’s fine header. Some great work down the left from John Hayley, who battled for possession and beat two players before finding Niyi whose great cross was buried by Diangana.

Wave after wave of Docklands pressure finally paid off when Coombes scored a cracking 30 yard lob to draw his side level.

The visitors continued to press for the winner and hit the bar twice through Diangana and Harry

Docklands.

But the north Southwark side ensured they kept a tight grip on top spot with the win, as well as giving them the knowledge that even if Athenlay win their games in hand they cannot overhaul Docklands unless they make a mistake on the run in.

On the day Archie Clowes grabbed his thirteenth goal of the season and Lavaun Witter made it half a dozen for the campaign in an excellent display.

Scotney fights for England crown

SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Ellie Scotney will travel to Durham this weekend hoping to come away with an England Boxing Youth Championship title.

The teenage lightweight could be in action tomorrow, depending on the draw in her section, as she seeks to add a national crown to the London title she picked up two weeks ago.

Scotney, who boxes for the Lynn club on Wells Way, Camberwell, will be up against four other girls in her division.

The youngster will have to fight at least twice to win the crown, and she will be expected to fight three times in three days should the draw fall that way.

Her other opponents for the national youth crown are Lauren Hall from the Exhall club, Chloe Hessin of Braunstone GG, Bria Fielding from Larches & Savick ABC and Shona Whitwell from St Ives boxing club.

Lynn head coach Samm Mullins told the News: “I think she has the capability to at least get to the final or win it but it easy to say that, she has to do it.”

Quarter finals for the title will take place tomorrow whilst semi-finals will take place on Saturday. Finalists will battle it out on Sunday at The Ferryhill Community Hub, where all the weekend action is taking place.

A goalmouth scramble following a corner saw Hamlet appear to score their second goal only for it to be chalked off for a dubious foul.

Almost instantly Bury went up the other end and equalised when Remi Garrett got

the better of Phil Wilson with a neat drive.

Town now had the momentum and it looked like Hamlet would be coming away from Suffolk with a disappointing result.

But two goals in the final fifteen minutes swung the game the Pink and Blues way.

A calamitous piece of defending exposed home keeper Alex Archer on 75 minutes which Ottaway punished.

A stray pass left the keeper and the Hamlet forward in a footrace to reach a ball waiting to be hit home, and Ottaway got to the ball first to restore Dulwich's lead.

The game was killed off nine minutes later when the ball pin balled around the area following a corner, only for Ethan

Pinnock to nudge it home with a finish on the turn from near the penalty spot.

Hamlet were in league action on Wednesday night away against Lewes, a game that took place after the News went to press.

Fish washed out again Unusually it was the Champion Hill pitch in East Dulwich, which usually copes well with deluges of rain, that was unplayable resulting in the postponement of Fisher's first home game this campaign. The rearranged contest will take place on Monday March 23.

The previous weekend saw Fisher game less whilst landlords Dulwich Hamlet played out a loss against Canvey Island. Instead the Black and Whites played the following Monday falling to defeat by a solitary goal to Cray Valley.

On the last weekend in January Fisher were set to face another relegation 'six pointer' against fellow strugglers Lingfield.

But the home pitch of the Surrey side failed to pass a pitch inspection and both teams will have to replay that encounter at a later date.

Lingfield took advantage of Fisher's inaction last weekend by leapfrogging them in the table after they picked up three points against Rochester United thanks to a 2-1 victory.

FOLLOWING ON from the launch of the London Premier League Kicks Project at Millwall Football Club in January attended by Mayor Boris Johnson and Chief Executive of the Premier League Richard Scudamore, Millwall Community Trust have continued to provide sporting and educational opportunities for young people within the boroughs of Lewisham & Southwark.

An U18 football festival between young people from the Rotherhithe, Camberwell, and Dulwich Premier League Kicks projects was held at Millwall Community’s Lions Centre on Friday 30th January. Young people from their respective weekly sessions were selected to represent their project. The Rotherhithe team prevailed on the evening, and left with the illustrious winners’ trophy and medals. The evening was an excellent example of cohesion and positivity amongst peers from neighbouring areas, using football as the conduit.

A group of young people from the Camberwell Millwall Premier League Kicks project, travelled to City Academy in Hackney on Thursday 6th February to play a friendly fixture against an Arsenal Kicks U16 representative team.

The fixture was a result of the continued work between the Premier League Kicks clubs in providing opportunities for young people, to play competitive fixtures in positive environments with friends and peers. The Camberwell side played several games during the tournament, winning in style and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

The week of activities ended with the monthly Kicks League on Friday 6th February, together with an educational workshop delivered by organisation ‘Sharp End’. The content of the workshop consisted of factual and real life information, with interactive group exercises along with the hard hitting messages of the reality of knife crime and the

Kit Symons worked as a scout, academy coach and an assistant manager before he took the reins at Fulham. When he accepted the job in September, the Cottagers were bottom of the Championship - but he soon guided them into mid-table.

Now, though, Fulham are on the slide again. "When I first took over it was about steadying the ship, galvanising and getting everything together," Symons said.

"We did that and that went quite well. It is about rebuilding now and rebuilding is the tough bit, given where we had to come from."

What is the mood like after three defeats in four?

There is a bit of concern at Fulham because the league is so tight that essentially one good result sees you bounce up the table and two bad results leaves you in a relegation fight - and Fulham are falling between those two stalls at the minute. A month ago there was a thought that Fulham had a decent outside chance of a play-off place but I’m afraid if you were to ask anyone at the club this week they would settle for escaping relegation.

What do the supporters make of Kit Symons’s tenure so far?

The fans are pretty savvy and realise that Symons, who is after all a Fulham hero, inherited a right mess.

There were players brought in during the summer who really weren’t fit for purpose and most of them were trying to be offloaded during the January transfer window - albeit there were no takers.

So there are a lot of passengers for Symons to deal with. The fans are grateful that the academy is starting to pay off - an awful lot of the current team have come through the set-up here, with Symons, and are on board with the project.

But these are young lads and works-inprogress so results are going to go up and down. Although there are one or two classy numbers still in the fold the majority of the team are players that are making their way in the Championship for the first time.

The fans have worked out what’s going on and are quite sympathetic - and after all, Fulham were bottom of the table when Symons took over so, relatively speaking, this is success.

How involved has highlyrated Patrick Roberts been and who else has caught the eye?

Roberts is a smashing

prospect and a great ball player but frankly a gust of wind would blow the lad over.

He’s only 18 and there are some right bustling types in the Championship. You have to assume he is one for the future and there are others of that sort. Cauley Woodrow, Jack Grimmer and Lasse Christensen would be the players Symons has high hopes for.

How would you assess Symons’ style?

He’s picked up on things both at an international level with Wales and in other coaching situations too, so I think he’s a smart coach who knows how to get the best out of players.

His greatest skill, because he’s such a personable bloke, is that he frequently takes players to one side to tell them things, remind them about something or offer some encouragement. When you’ve got a lot of young players in the side, that goes down very well.

He’s very much a hands-on person who has a pretty extensive coaching

How do Fulham set-up offensively?

Fulham play with a three in attack two up front with one in behind, and the one in behind has often been Ross McCormack. The jury is out as to whether that’s the best position for him but Symons wants him to play there and for that three to revolve. McCormack recently said that the further up the field he is the more goals he will score and he proved it against Nottingham Forest by scoring a hat-trick. They also have Brian Ruiz, a Costa Rican international, to utilise.

DAN HARDING did not doubt that Millwall would stay up when he joined the club last month - and he is still convinced that the Lions will beat the drop.

Harding, who was one of eight new signings during the January transfer window, says Millwall are capable of “shooting up the table” over the coming weeks.

They remain in the bottom three after Saturday’s defeat to Leeds, a point off safety, with back-to-back home games coming up against Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday.

The Lions have taken maximum points from just three of their league fixtures at The Den this season so now would be the perfect time to improve on that dismal record.

And Harding feels the experience of manager Ian Holloway will prove to be the difference between survival and relegation come May. “The lads who came to the club in January wouldn’t have done so if they didn’t think we were going to get out of this situation,” the left back told the News.

“We have got a fantastic manager not just in terms of his tactical awareness on the pitch but how he is around the place.

“He’s a joy to work for. There’s no wasted time here, we’re always working hard and the likes of [assistant manager] Nigel Gibbs are making sure everything is right for the players.

“The manager has been everything I expected and more. He’s a good character.

“He doesn’t like any negativity or sad faces - he wants people coming into his club to work with a smile on their faces, which is the right way to be.

Harding, on loan from Nottingham Forest, is bedding into a new-look back four that also consists of Shaun Cummings, Alan Dunne and Jos Hooiveld.

“There’s a really good set of lads here,” Harding added. “They’ve made me feel really welcome. I’m getting used to playing with different players and we seem to be getting better with each game.

“We’ve almost started a miniseason with a new back four and we’ve picked up some good results.

“I’ve played with Jos at Southampton and he’s a really good player, a good guy and great to have around the place.

“We’d played a few games together before so when I found out he was coming here it was good news not just for the club but for myself as well.

“Jos is a top player in this league he’s dominant in the air, good on the ball and a threat in the opposition’s box. He’s brought nothing but good things to the club.

“Next to him, Dunney is a fantastic professional who knows the division and the club inside and out, while Shaun is an exciting young player on the way up. It all looks positive.”

IAN HOLLOWAY launched an attack on West Yorkshire Police after the force again imposed restrictions on Millwall fans at travelling to Elland Road.

Chaplow, whose contract Millwall expires in the summer, has been told that he will not be offered an extension and is free to leave.

The midfielder will spend the next few days at the Tractor Boys' base at Playford Road with a view to joining on loan.

“Personally I don’t feel that but I’ve only just come through the door,” Harding added. “It’s a difficult one.

When you haven’t won at home for a while, you can think about things differently.

“I’d played here before against Millwall and it was always a tough game. That’s what we need to turn it into again - teams not looking forward to coming here and playing against a good Millwall team.

“I’m sure a good result and performance at home would get the fans onside. It can all change.

“Going back to our last home game, against Huddersfield, I thought for 80 minutes it was a really good performance but we got sucked into thinking we had to go gung-ho too early in an attempt to win.

“Although that might be a bit of naivety it was also desire from the lads to get the three points. That backfired on us a little bit but we’ll learn from that and manage games better.”

BAILEY STEPS UP RECOVERY

MILLWALL MIDFIELDER Bailey stepped up his recovery from a long-term injury as the U21s thrashed Bristol City 7-3 on Monday afternoon.

A calf problem has limited Bailey to just two appearances this season but he came through today's development fixture unscathed.

Bailey played 45 minutes as Aiden O'Brien's hat-trick inspired Neil Harris' young Lions to a convincing win.

"It was great to see Nicky back, to see his enthusiasm and excitement," said coach Harris. "He played like a young kid at times, chasing everything."

ALEX MOWATT'S deflected free kick was the difference between Leeds and Millwall during a tight encounter at Elland Road.

The Lions will rue a poor first-half in which they were overrun by the hosts, who deservedly took the lead five minutes before the break.

On the bench, Aiden O'Brien came in for Magaye Gueye, who was left out altogether.

Leeds, who picked up three points at Reading on Tuesday, were fast out of the traps and forced a string of early corners.

They should have taken the lead in the 8th minute when Mowatt fed Charlie Taylor, whose low cross into the box was hooked inches wide of the post by Sam Byram.

Stefan Maierhofer tested Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri for the first time with a long-range half volley before flashing a shot across the face of goal when a pass to a teammate was the better option.

After Diego Fabbrini won a corner in the 18th minute, Lee Martin's delivery was met by Jos Hooiveld and

his glancing header looped just over the angle of post and bar.

Fabbrini then drilled into the side netting from Maierhofer's knockdown but Leeds, who had looked far the better side in general play, took the lead in the 39th minute.

The goal came from a set piece after Shaun Williams' trip on Byram led to a free kick 20-yards out.

Mowatt stepped up and, with the aid of a deflection, curled a shot inside Forde's near post.

Leeds could have scored again before half time but Forde made vital saves first to deny Rudy Austin and then foil Morison after the striker pounced on Hooiveld's lapse.

At the interval, Holloway withdrew Maierhofer and brought on Yorkshireman Lee Gregory, who offered a more potent threat as Millwall's lone striker.

Both sides had half-chances in the early stages of the second period but neither Martinez nor Morison could guide their efforts on target.

The Lions were enjoying their best spell of the match when, 18 minutes after the restart, Woolford spurned a gilt-edged chance to draw the scores

level.

Gregory won the ball 30 yards out and picked out the overlapping run of the winger, who was clean through on goal but skied his shot over the bar.

Desperate to make amends, Woolford twice went close from distance – drilling inches wide of Silvestri's far post before sending a half-volley whistling over the bar.

As Millwall pushed forward, Leeds became more and more dangerous on the break but both Morison and Marco Antenucci failed to convert good openings. In the 88th minute, sub Fuller rode two challenges on the edge of the box before shooting into the side netting as the Lions' hopes of an equaliser faded.

Morison should have made sure of the points for Leeds but, with the goal at his mercy, Dunne slid in to snuff out the chance.

Dunne credits improved performances with return to favourite position

ALAN DUNNE was one of the main casualties after Millwall’s cup humiliation at Bradford.

He was left out of the Lions’ squad for their next game against Ipswich and only made the bench for the clash with Reading three days later.

But Dunne came on against the Royals after Sid Nelson’s sending off and since then, the 32-year-old has won back his place in the side - and not for the first time.

The defender has made a habit of bouncing back from adversity.

He did it last year to inspire the Lions’ season-saving, eight-game unbeaten run and is threatening to do the same again.

Dunne’s winning goal against Birmingham last week has been the highlight of a mini-purple patch which, he says, is the result of returning to his preferred position.

“It baffles me when people ask ‘why do you keep coming back?’ because only David Forde has played more games than me this season,” Dunne told the News this week.

“I was only dropped for one game so I wouldn’t say I’ve come back - come back from where? Where did I go?

“What people are trying to ask is ‘why do your performance levels change?’

And people who watch football week in, week out would know that I wasn’t in a good routine.

“Because of injuries and suspensions, I was playing as the left centre-half one week and right back the next and I don’t feel my contribution in those positions is as good.

“So when people now see me playing well at right centre-half they wonder where that’s come from.

“I was the right centre-half at the end of last season and the start of this year, and I grew in confidence there.

“Then we lost a couple of games, I got suspended and I didn’t play as the right centre-half at all during October, November or December.

“That’s not an excuse because I should be good enough to play anywhere in the back four but I lost confidence in my game as the team was struggling.

“Not many players who’ve played 300 games as a right back are then asked to

play left centre-half.

“I can play there but when you’re learning a new position and playing games at the same time, it’s difficult because this division can punish you.

“To improve I need to be playing in the same position and I did have that conversation with the manager because I’m a lot more comfortable on the right.

“But I had to move around because of injuries and I wanted to help the team.”

Millwall have conceded less than a goal-a-game since Dunne’s return - but he isn’t the only one impressing in a totally revamped back four.

“I feel like I’m back to my best,” he added. “I’m enjoying my football and hopefully we can pick up some points now because the team is playing better and the spirit is back to where it was.

“Since I’ve gone back to right centrehalf and Jos Hooiveld, Shaun Cummings and Dan Harding have come in, the chemistry has improved.

“The defence looks stronger and more confident.

“In the months leading up to January I felt there were a lot of individual performances - and individual is the word I use because there were a lot of contract issues going on.

“People were looking to play for themselves and not the club. You could feel that in the team because of certain circumstances. But can you blame them?

“People have families, they were looking after themselves and playing for themselves. Maybe they were trying to get a move elsewhere because they

didn’t know what was going to happen here.

“That was a big factor in our form.”

Dunne is optimistic about Millwall’s survival chances, which could hinge on turning around their dire home form.

“The signs are there and it feels like we are capable of winning every game at the moment,” he added.

“We need to get that first goal because we tend to do well in that situation.

“Even in our last home game against Huddersfield, I thought we were excellent for 80 minutes. We had control of the game until a mad ten minutes cost us.

“We look more dangerous going forward - Diego Fabbrini has given us something new and we need that little bit of quality to put the ball in the back

of the net.

“That’s where we are at the moment.

Have we got enough goals? We have to find some goals to see us through until the end of the season because I think we’ll be fine defensively.”

On Saturday, Millwall host Fulham at The Den in the first of two home games in four days.

“Fulham are a huge club,” said Dunne.

“They were in the Premier League last season and still have players with a lot of quality who can really hurt teams.

“Fulham will be no easy game but they won’t know what to expect at Millwall so we’ll try to surprise them.

“We have to start quickly and get the first goal. Fulham will be a passing side and will try to move the ball around us but we’ll be ready for them.”

Millwall will benefit from TV windfall - if they beat the drop EXCLUSIVE

THE PREMIER League’s eyewatering TV deal could be worth over £1million-a-year to Millwall if they remain a Championship club.

The broadcasting rights for games in the top flight have been sold for an astonishing £5.1billion but some of that money will trickle down to the Football League.

And the Lions would get a bigger slice of the pie in the Championship when the deal comes into effect in 2016-17 - around 18 months from now.

deal would also increase the value of the club, according to chief executive Andy Ambler.

“There’s no doubt that this deal has some advantages to it and the amount of money that comes down will increase,” Ambler told the News.

“That could mean Championship clubs get an additional £1m - at least so the prize is bigger.

“The chairman has no interest in selling the club but Millwall would also become more valuable in the Championship as a result of this.”

With Ian Holloway’s side currently battling relegation, Ambler says it is more important than ever before that Millwall beat the drop.

“We need to stay in this division because we want to challenge for the

Premier League in the future and the new money makes that prospect more exciting,” he added.

“The downside is that parachute payments will get bigger so our competitors will have more to spend and the division will be even more competitive.

“The incentive has grown but that will also make it harder.”

To sharpen their competitive edge, the Lions will revamp their recruitment setup ahead of the summer transfer window.

This week, Brentford announced they will use mathematical modelling to identify new signings.

“We have to be spot-on with our recruitment and ensure we don’t make any mistakes,” Ambler added.

“There are different models to follow and different ways of building a successful team, and we have to be aware of those.

“Brentford are a good example because their owner is putting in place a new strategy which is all about recruitment. Clubs are moving away from tradition.

“We are looking at our recruitment behind the scenes - the way we recruit players and the different methods and approaches used by other clubs.”

Meanwhile, Millwall have been dealt an injury blow with the news that right back Shaun Cummings is set to miss four weeks with a groin injury. Centre back Byron Webster could leave The Den on loan with a return to former club Yeovil Town a strong possibility.

THE OVERHAUL of Millwall’s squad during the January transfer window has diffused “tension” at the club, captain Alan Dunne has revealed.

Dunne believes the Lions are betterplaced to avoid relegation after Ian Holloway made significant changes to his playing staff.

The Millwall manager also sat down with each out-of-contract player to inform them whether they were in his plans for the future or were free to depart.

And Dunne feels those clear-the-air discussions have lifted the mood in the dressing room.

Holloway’s January cull, which was prompted by the Lions’ embarrassing FA Cup thrashing at Bradford, saw eight players leave The Den. “Bradford was a poor night and a disappointing result,” Dunne told the News. “Since then the manager has made some big decisions and the chairman has brought forward the club’s plans for the summer.

“Players know their futures now and since then there hasn’t been as much tension around the place because everyone knows where they stand.

“You could say that’s helped and the spirit is definitely better. The new faces coming in have freshened things up and brought something different to the table. We look a lot better for it.”

Dunne, whose contract at Millwall expires in the summer, was among the players called into Holloway’s office for a chat.

That happened just days after he played in the 4-0 defeat at Bradford.

“I wouldn’t say I was worried about it,” he added. “I know what I can offer and what I bring to the club.

“I’m a big part of Millwall and the team needs me. When players needed to stand up and be counted last year, when times were tough, I stepped to the plate. The manager needs players like that. So seeing the manager wasn’t about my future, it was more about how I could help him pick up results.

“My future will always sort itself out if I’m playing well so the conversation wasn’t really about my contract.

“It is nerve-racking going up to any manager’s office but I know what I’m capable of.”
