Lette me tell you Author brings fun and full frontal frankness to Southbank Centre's WOW festival

A

ustralian author Kathy Lette shot to fame with the cult classic novel Puberty Blues, which she penned when she was just 17-years-old.

She’s gone on to write 12 international bestsellers, including Mad Cows (which was made into a film starring Joanna Lumley and Anna Friel), How to Kill Your Husband - and Other Handy Household Hints (staged by the Victorian opera), The Boy Who Fell to Earth, Courting Trouble, and Best Laid Plans -soon to be a TV series.

She’s worked as a newspaper columnist, a TV sitcom writer, and raises an autistic son –and she does it all with a sense of humour and inimitable style.

Now Kathy’s coming to the Southbank Centre with Girls Night Out: a psychological strip tease spanning from Puberty Blues to Menopausal Blues. The night promises tell-all tales of marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, mastitis, sexist bosses, teenage-daughterwrangling, ageing toy boys, and personal accounts of making the Queen laugh, hiding Julian Assange in her attic, tongue kissing Prince William, and close encounters of the George Clooney kind.

The Sydney-born writer has called London home for 28 years; she can often be found at the Savoy (where she was writer in residence) drinking a cocktail named after her. “London’s an amazing city to live in but I love Australia and go back a lot. The English can be a bit alarmed by me,” Kathy told the Weekender. “They used to say Geoffrey [Robertson, her husband] was this handsome QC and he was going out with beautiful Nigella Lawson, and what was he doing

with me: a colonial nymphomaniac loudmouth? I can’t cook, I use my smoke alarm as a timer. But the trick is not to care,” she said.

The 58-year-old was famously snapped wearing a Corgi patterned suit to meet the Queen. “They were having all the Aussies at Buckingham Palace: Rolf Harris, Hugh Jackman, Elle McPherson, Collette Dinnigan. I got my surfie girlfriends to make me a corgi suit, I had no fitting, did my make-up in the rear view mirror with my head out the window for an impromptu blowdry, and when I met the Queen I said “I’m worried one of your corgis will mate with my leg” and the next day it was front page of the Sydney Morning Herald, and the Age- me making the Queen laugh,” she recalled. “It goes to show: always be yourself.”

It’s this spirit that guides Kathy’s one-woman show. “I am not a comedian. I’m not a stand up. I’m just an author with a hopefully witty way with words,” she said.

“Scientists tell us laughter comes from the oldest part of the brain, our humour is cathartic and confessional. This is a way to strip off to our emotional undies in 3.6 seconds, and it’s incredibly bonding.”

“In the show I just talk about if I have any skill as a writer, it’s to put into words what women might be thinking,” she continued.

“When I wrote Foetal Attraction, and Mad Cows I thought no one has told the truth about childbirth.

I can’t be the only one finding it this hard. I couldn’t find anything in literature: Jane Austen, the Brontes, Germaine Greer, Simone de Beauvoir, Gloria Steinem. Babies and books didn’t mix.”

Laughter is the author’s lifeline.

“You can laugh or cry. Cry and you get salt in your champagne,” Kathy said. “There’s a lot to laugh about. I also try to make my show a bit empowering. I want women thinking they can take on the world.

I no longer want a man’s seat on the bus; I want a man’s seat on the board.”

The author has always been ahead of the curve, co-writing Puberty Blues: a teen novel about sex and strung-out surfie gangs in the suburbs of Sydney, with her friend Gabrielle Carey, when they were just teenagers. “I don’t think we would have done it if we didn’t have each other,” Kathy reflected. “We could stand up against the boys because we had that camaraderie. I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to blow a literary raspberry at the boys.”

This was ‘70s Australia, when Germaine Greer was rhyming slang for beer. Now described as feminist and an iconic, important piece of Australian literature, Puberty Blues was initially rejected by 35 publishers. Since being published, it’s been made into a major film and miniseries, and the prologue is written by Kylie Minogue.

When I asked if men can attend Girls Night Out Kathy warned “only if they’re very, very brave. They’ll be our male sacrifice! The men who do come are pretty nice; they’ve got to be ok with girl talk and like female company. Often I get three generations of women: a female trifecta.”

You gotta be soulful

S

oulful Emma Louise (S.E.L) is playing her debut show at Streatham’s Hideaway jazz club to launch her remake of Des’ree’s classic anthem You Gotta Be.

The new single is produced in collaboration with American DJ and Producer DJ Spen. Emma’s adaptation resonates with authentic old skool hip hop and 90s soul. “I’ve been doing a mix of mostly my own material and a couple of covers,” she told the Weekender.

The singer is a full-time member of Soul II Soul, one of the most innovative dance/R&B groups of the late ‘80s. Since graduating from Brunel University, where she studied music, Emma has worked with a slew of international artists, including Alicia Keys, Mica Paris, Omar, Debbie Harry, and Jocelyn Brown.

“At the Hideaway I’ll be playing mostly my own material, stuff we’ve been recording and writing for the past five years and my latest two releases, including You’ve Gotta Be,” she said.

Born and bred in north London, she started playing the violin at age 6, piano at 8 and began singing solo at 11. “And I’ve been singing ever since,” she said. “I majored in vocals and piano at my degree.”

As part of Emma’s A-levels she had to write a song. “It’s easier to perform when it’s your own,” she said. “It’s much harder to perform covers. I’m really careful. You have to do it justice.”

Emma’s producer assigned her the task of finding a cover.

“Spen gave me homework to look over and pick a cover and I made a list of 24 songs,” Emma said. “I noticed 22 were American songs, and I said it would be a good idea if we did a huge song that reached the US but was done

by a British soul diva. Initially he suggested Sade but I said what about Des’ree? You Gotta Be is one of those songs. It’s such an anthem. People are responding well so far.”

“I needed to make sure I maintained the authenticity of

Des’ree’s delivery. I didn’t want to R&B it up too much. There’s more emotion, I want to make sure it still shows what the song’s about.”

Emma is bringing her full band of seven to the Streatham jazz club.

“These guys have been with me from the start -about five years,”

she said. “I’ve just had a baby so this is my first performance back.”

Next up, the songstress has two music videos coming out, followed by some new remixes.

GIRLFRIEND MATERIAL March marks the BFI’s Girlfriends season of films.

The celebration of female friendship incudes screenings of Bette Midler’s classic Beaches, Gentleman Prefer Blondes -starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell) and Nine to Five (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton). Also watch out for Now and Then (arguably the girl version of Stand by Me), and Aussie cult flick Muriel’s Wedding.

A HEDY RUSH Susan Sarandon is also making an appearance at the BFI to launch Bombshell: the Hedy Lamarr story.

One of Hollywood’s leading ladies of the 1940s, off screen Lamarr invented frequency hopping during World War II, which paved the way for wi-fi and Bluetooth technology.

Alexandra Dean’s documentary charts Lamarr’s fascinating life, from a youth in Vienna, the pivotal transatlantic journey that landed her a lucrative contract with MGM, her struggles for more challenging roles, and contribution to the war effort.

The BFI’s preview on International Women’s Day (March 8) is followed by a Q&A with director Alexandra Dean and Executive Producer Susan Sarandon.

David Calder on his acting career and ‘Shakespeare: The action movie’

D

avid Calder wanted to be an actor from a young age and was quite happy to tell me about how he saw a notice for the National Youth Theatre one day when he was “bored stiff one summer and thought, ‘I’ll have a go at that’”. From that opportune start David says he has “never looked back,” writes Michael Holland...

Now we as a nation of TV, film and theatre fans must be thankful for that NYT notice because, since Mr Calder graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he has been plying his trade in one of those three genres ever since he was sixteen.

David Calder has been in so many of the great TV series, and performed in just about all of the classic plays, that I got lost in research. On stage he is up there with the best and will continue to be so. In his busy career he has been the Captain of the Titanic, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Kings, Lords of the Realm and also played my old mate Terry Perkins in the recent Hatton Garden Job. Those of us who were around in 1983 will recall his excellent portrayal of D.I. Resnick, the copper obsessed with putting Harry Rawlins behind bars in the TV series Widows. But I wanted to know if there was a breakthrough part for him. He laughed before answering: “I’ve had a lot of praise heaped on me, especially for the classics, but the reality of acting is that you’re always auditioning for your next job - there’s no resting on your laurels.

praise and then it’s back to work.”

He does, though, tell me he has no preference between working on stage or screen but explained that “one is playing to an audience of many, while the other is to an audience of one - the camera.”

He has now moved from bank robber to Caesar at the new Bridge Theatre. He tells how Director Nicholas Hytner asked him a year ago if he would play Julius in Shakespeare’s play. “I said yes immediately,” he said.

The production is now in preview and the excitement was obvious as the actor spoke about the first performances. “Nick (Hytner) has torn out all the auditorium seats and the set is made up of various rostra that come out of the ground as needed… The actors are in amongst 400 hundred audience who have paid to stand, like the groundlings at The Globe,” he said. “This Julius

Caesar connects directly with the audience, a promenade piece where we shake hands with them as we move through and get them involved in the actual mechanics of the production, and that is a source of enormous energy.”

David tells how Shakespeare’s play has been edited to now be “a political thriller and at the end of it the audience feels as if they’ve been in an action movie!”

“This is no toga party Caesar, it is completely in the modern world but still completely true to Shakespeare.’

The former Scott Lidgett Secondary School in Bermondsey is currently being used by the prestigious Old Vic theatre.

A collection of their alumni from over six years of Old Vic New Voices community cast are staging their first production as Waste Not theatre company.

production ‘State of Things’, will see the drab 1960’s building transformed for a collection of short plays, centred on the idea of collective bargaining. From a tree hugger on a mission below the back stairwell, to warring sisters in the former science lab, to robots in the old school’s kitchen.

The building will be opened to the public for just two nights on Thursday and Friday, March 1 and 2.

The audience will be guided around the building, which is set to be demolished to make way for luxury apartments by developer

This year’s festival, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of British women winning the right to vote, celebrates the seismic changes brought about by women and men historically on gender equality, and identifies the future solutions still needed to overcome modern day challenges for women and girls.

given access to what has led to the countdown to her last breath. A striking juxtaposition of seemingly trivial, innocent moments against the horror and confusion of loss and war. Henley throws herself into an emotive, impressive and skilful performance, flitting from endearing and unsure twenty-something to the despair of someone watching their loved ones die before them.

James Donnelly’s set is simple but beautiful, fitting each monologue perfectly, the actors penned into a mirrored pit, framed from above

by Cassie Mitchell’s neon lights with music smoothly transitioning throughout from narrative to narrative.

Alas, this just isn’t quite enough to maintain a connecting thread.

While the two actors’ performances are explosive and engaging, as a whole Angry feels somewhat disjointed and underdeveloped, a collection of hastily thrown together, incomplete ideas. It would be interesting to return to see Huntley and Henley in their

opposite roles, if only to see Huntley tackle the standout piece, ‘Air’.

However, despite the verve of the performances, the content isn’t quite enough to warrant a repeat visit.

Philip Ridley’s latest work is an emotive set of six genderless monologues, with each actor switching between each set throughout the run. Huntley started us off in the performance I attended with, as I mentioned, a very angry piece, and while it was performed well, it was quite bizarre being yelled at in the confines of Southwark Playhouse’s ‘Little’ about whether we enjoyed the film Bambi or not.

Moving swiftly on, though, to ‘Okay’, Henley’s first piece of the evening was a stark contrast to the explosive rage of the first, delivering a frantic American tirade of a self-professed procrastinator, battling against words such as ‘ponder’ and ‘hesitate’ only to loop back on herself, back to the

beginning, repeating the same lines in an ever increasing delirium.

‘Bloodshot’ gives Huntley the chance to shine, with the longest of his monologues of the evening.

A suspiciously uneasy story of a measured and careful teen’s erotic encounter in a park, Huntley’s performance is intense and earnest, but the story doesn’t really lead anywhere. ‘Bloodshot’ is not alone in this, the monologues do seem to fizzle out, often feeling like a great beginning to what could be a great piece that has been left unfinished, resulting in confusion and overall sense of ‘huh?’.

But then there is ‘Air’, a fully formed, engaging narrative. Leading us from a bookshop meet, through recollections of childhood and back to the blossoming romance, full of the awkwardness of first dates and first kisses we know how this ends and it isn’t going to end nicely.

These memories are laced between Henley’s present, trapped underwater in a sinking ship, we are gradually

The 90 minute long production in the delightful Union Theatre, which was transformed for the night by set designers Justin Williams and Jonny Rust into a hearty street scene in Spain during the Peninsular War. The play starts with a very convincing opening number by Alexander Barria, who is playing painter Francesco Goya - the artist whose work inspired the writing of Carmen. Barria sings a series of melodic yet melancholic songs, which beautifully thread their way through the narrative.

As the play progresses we see a burst of energy from the chorus line, who light up the stage with lively, yet smooth, choreography

by Adam Haigh, and visually pleasing costume design by Penn O’Gara. A talented troupe brought the story to life from start to finish with committed and dynamic performances, complemented by a unified ring of voices that harmoniously provided an array of beautifully written lyrics.

For a small theatre, the space became very expansive and was nicely lit by Ben Jacobs, who managed to create a very dreamlike, diaphanous effect over the intimate and tender moments acted out by lead cast members Rachel Lea-Gray, as Carmen, and Maximilian Marston’s Captain Velarde.

A very enjoyable watch overall, so congratulations to a talented cast and great production team.

My only point for development is that more could have been done to add a sense of authenticity to the play’s Spanish heritage. For example, it would have been nice to see traditional Flamenco style choreography, or to have used Spanish accents more consistently throughout the play rather than at random points.

Aspire Wellbeing Supported Fitness Classes Aspire’s gym classes are specifically designed for people who wish to improve their health and wellbeing through exercise but who aren’t able, for a variety of reasons, to attend a mainstream fitness class.

For example, many people with learning disabilities find that attending a general, local class can be too challenging.

Wendy Yates, one of our specially trained instructors at Aspire, observed: “We identified that there isn’t a lot of suitable exercise opportunities for people with learning disabilities. The environment and pace of a normal class can be quite fast moving, and we believed that this wasn’t appropriate for them, so we tailored a class for their individual needs.”

However, the classes need to be appropriately challenging and physically beneficial. Therefore, Aspire’s fitness classes are very similar to other circuit classes, in that there’s a warm up session followed by supported individual work on Aspire’s eight, low impact circuit stations. These are designed to focus on balance, strength and cardio. We ensure there is balance and variety in how each individual undertakes their ‘circuit’, to ensure that they have a balanced, all-round work out to suit everyone.

We have classes that are designed specifically for adults over the age of 16 with a learning disability. Attendees should be able to mobilise with or without assistance and be able to participate in a group activity with the appropriate level of support.

Heat of the moment I

recently had the pleasure of partaking in a hot yoga session at Streatham Leisure Centre. It was so glorious, I could have stayed in the studio until April.

If, this winter has left you frozen to the core, there’s nothing better than thawing out in a studio heated to 32 degrees.

Hot yoga promote sweating, and warm up the body to boost flexibility. There’s less risk of injury because your muscles are all warmed up, leaving you more limber. Practising yoga in a heated room not only increases

your pulse, but also boosts the metabolism, which allows your blood vessels to become more flexible, improves circulation and increases blood flow to the limbs.

It also improves the lymphatic system and flushes out toxins.

This class, run by Ozgur, was a kind of fluid vinyasa style: flowing with an emphasis on deep stretches. The teacher provides more advanced postures for those who want to challenge themselves. It’s pitched as a “more intense workout” than regular yoga, and promises to relieve stress, promote better sleep, and increase energy. You’ll also

improve strength, and overall fitness, and with an average of 475 calories burnt per hour, it’s a great workout.

The hour class flew by far too quickly. Like I said earlier, I could have stayed in there for weeks.

Even though you work for that hour, you’re left feeling very relaxed, and deeply realigned, with glowing skin to boot. It’s also nice to be in a gym where everything is shiny and new, and spotlessly clean.

As part of its recent refurb, Streatham Leisure Centre also has a new HIIT studio, and a revamped gym floor with slick grey

state of the art equipment. It also boasts the only Olympic sized ice skating rink in London for people who’ve recently been inspired by the film I, Tonya.

On site there’s two swimming pools: a 25metre, six lane pool and a 13 metre teaching pool, as well as a multi-sport sports hall,

used for badminton, basketball and a range of other sports.

Martial arts classes for blind and visually impaired people Blind and partially sighted people can now learn martial arts at classes being held in Peckham.

Instructors say the weekly training improves fitness and coordination, and also can help with self-defence skills.

SELVis (South East London Vision), which has partnered with Metro Blind Sports for the initiative, said: “After the success of pilot self-defence taekwondo sessions last year we have worked with Metro Blind Sports and Walters Family School of Taekwondo to run a further six week course.

“Any physical activity always has a positive outcome, having a visual impairment can make it difficult to attend mainstream

The hour-long lessons take place on Tuesdays at 11am and Saturdays at 3pm, and started on February 13. The classes will be held close to Peckham Rye station and bus stops, but a meet and greet service can also be arranged

The Noisy Animals are coming to make a din in Noisy Holiday at Canada Water Theatre.

The show, a mix of live music, theatre, comedy, puppetry and animation, tells the story of Kid Carpet, who wants to keep the animals happy as they come up with ideas of where to go.

Evacuee life

Easter fair at The Horniman

London life during the Second World War with a day of events themed around Jacqueline Wilson’s latest book Wave Me Goodbye will be held at The Museum of London Docklands.

The book follows ten-year-old Shirley, who is evacuated to the countryside where she lives with the mysterious Mrs Waverley and meets to East End boys.

The museum’s free events, from 11.30am to 4pm on Saturday, March 10, includes workshops where you can design your own suitcases and decide what you’d need to pack if you were evacuated.

Celebrate mum with a rave!

Big Fish Little Fish is holding a family rave on Saturday, March 10, the day before Mothering Sunday at Fire/Lightbox in Vauxhall.

There will be two rooms of DJs. The biggest room, in Fire, is Eddy Temple Morris, who will be playing dance music with a rock edge.

In Lightbox, which has multi coloured LED rooms and a ceiling that changes colour,

there is Baker & Beale playing techno.

There will also be a craft room, a toddler play area, and a baby chill out.

There’s a bar for adults, a cake stall, free transfer tattoos, free glowsticks and a face painting stall.

Young feminists

Nature art You can make a plaster plaque inspired by nature at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses.

The workshop involved exploring and collecting things to press into clay, and then making the plaques to take home.

There will be a Feminist Corner for under 10s – girls only – at the Southbank Centre’s Women of the World season.

The interactive workshop will explore what being a girl means, and give youngsters tips on how to start a campaign from their bedroom. Sessions for girls aged 6 to 7 is at 10am on March 10; and aged 8 to 10 at 10am and 4pm on Sunday, March 11.

There will also be one just for boys aged 8 to 10 at 4pm on Saturday, March 10. The events are at the Royal Festival Hall, Level 3 Function Room, Blue side.

uck Duck Goose is part of Pop Brixton, a strange conglomerate of pop ups and start ups in shipping containers on disused land, all there having a go until the developers move in to do what they do.

But I wasn’t there to get on my political soapbox, but to sample good Cantonese food cooked by Chef Oli who was inspired after a two year stint in Hong Kong.

General Manager Alan sat myself and Julia down and kindly offered to order for us, an offer we didn’t refuse because Alan has worked at Nobu London and for the family business, the famous Poons restaurant, so he knows his stuff.

After ordering a beer each we checked out this bright space with its tiny kitchen at one end where large men manoeuvre like ballerinas to work together safely. A mirror taking up the end wall visually doubles the diner’s size, if not physically, and creates more light. We liked it and the beers were good too.

Alan returned with a dish that looked like nothing I had seen before, so I was surprised to be told that it was Prawn Toast. I could not see any toast, just a heap of fresh curly endive, and bonito flakes

covering something beneath - a far cry from those dreary little triangles served up in other restaurants that look like they have just come from a local Iceland. These were thick with a taste of the sea and other flavours produced by the mayo, spiced fruit sauce and pickled kohlrabi. There was a lot going on and it kept going on as the bonito flakes dissolved and left a satisfying fishy taste on the palate. Now that’s what I call a starter.

Next to hit the table were two lovely seared scallops, cooked in XO Butter and served with Savoy cabbage,

chilli and a divine sauce that I have now forgotten the ingredients of as I was too busy eating while Alan talked us round the dish.

We now knew the seafood was good, and the menu informed us that the meat is all free range and ethically treated, so it was with great delight when Soy Chicken with Ginger Dressing was set between us. Alan explained how the chicken had been slowly poached with Five Spice, and how the dressing had been made, before bringing an excellent accompaniment of green vegetables with dried chilli

and Sesame, and Steamed Rice.

I must add that the freedom and ethical treatment given to that bird was worth it. The texture was soft and silky; it almost dissolved on the tongue.

It was time for a break and a digestif. Ms Julia brought me up to speed on her current projects, adding that she was looking for more, and before I finished my perfectly delightful Grenache from the Languedoc region Alan was back with a rather lively Lychee and Grapefruit Sorbet with Plum Wine that acted as a palate cleanser and a catalyst for not only freshening the mouth but also the mind, because my companion pounced on a chance remark and formulated her next project. Genius.

Amid the excitement Alan returned with a dessert that he said was Cha Chaan Teng: Peanut Butter French Toast with Caramel and Soy Ice Cream. It seemed simply like a flame-grilled peanut butter sandwich, but twinned with the ice cream it became so much more.

Duck Duck Goose provides good produce cooked well but with not too many other ingredients, so that you get to savour all the flavours. We liked it, all of it, so sat there soaking up the atmosphere for a while and feeling quite content.
