Lordship Lane is tarting itself up with the arrival of Tart London. Starting out life as a market stall at Herne Hill Farmer’s market, the company opened its first shop in Clapham, and is now expanding to launch a second store on 65 Lordship Lane. Founded by Head Chef at Stationers Hall and a former Facebook exec who describe themselves as “two guys avoiding a mid-life crisis", the café opens in mid September with a launch party, and 50 percent off for the first week. Tart will open for early morning commuters serving Volcano Coffee Works, and stay open late on Friday and Saturday nights.

Getting to grips with it T

he cult world of women’s wrestling has been brought to a new audience by Netflix series GLOW, based on the true story of an ‘80s female wrestling franchise in L.A. But wrestling isn’t just an American craze – the sport is growing in the UK too. To find out more the Weekender spoke to Amy Samardzija from Bermondsey, otherwise known as Candyfloss, who started wrestling when she was just 15 years old.

“I first watched WWE on TV when I was about 11 and it was different to anything I’d ever seen before. I loved the performance aspect and the theatrics so I decided to give it a go,” she said.

Amy describes wrestling as an “art form” rather than a sport, with costumes and characters a central part. But the acrobatics and carefully choreographed moves require just as much dedication as any professional athlete.

By the time she was sitting her GCSEs Amy was training four times a week with Progress Wrestling School in Brixton. A year later she had her first match and has since travelled to shows across the country. Now she’s finished college she plans to do an apprenticeship but her dream is to become a full-time pro.

Training is demanding and encompasses strength, cardio and acrobatics. It is also essential to avoid injuries in what can be a dangerous sport.

“I know people who have got concussion, dislocated shoulders. Last year I landed badly and fractured my elbow which meant I was out of training for four months,” she said.

“It’s important to trust the

people you’re wrestling because you’re really putting your life on the line.

If someone doesn’t catch you properly it can be really dangerous.”

Such intense training regimes mean close friendships are often formed between female wrestlers and Amy cites this as one of her favourite aspects of the sport.

“I’ve performed with people from all over the world and made some really good friends as it’s more about putting on a show than competing,” she explained.

During the two years she has been wrestling Amy has seen the popularity of the sport grow.

“It’s still not as big in the UK as in countries like America but new shows and promotions are popping up all the time,” she said.

In London there are now even several all-female training schools and WWE featured its first ever women’s tournament this summer. But wrestling is still very much male-dominated. When Amy first started she was the only girl at her training club and now she still trains with only a handful of other women.

Not that this phases the seventeen-year-old.

“I’m one of the youngest but because I have more experience I get the chance to help the new girls who join since the coaches are all men.”

But Amy is keen to stress women shouldn’t let this put them off.

“The whole idea is to stand out and be different so it can really boost your confidence.

I’d encourage women not to be afraid to give wrestling a go.”

Platter rotators include David Diston, Adam Jenkins, Tom Ambrose and Neil Stroud. They’ll be no need for USB leads, touchscreens and new-fangled controllers, as this lot stick to tried and trusted lovely vinyl.

With a dress code of “clowns, top hats, tea pots, paper bags, tigers and drag pigs,” this is unlikely to prove a smash with the nu-Brixton crowd, but if you’re after a mad mash up of Glasto vibes, Boomtown madness, bizarre performance and cabaret, this unusual night at Café Cairo is worth a visit.

Old school Brixtonites will remember it as the Hobgoblin and before that the George Canning, but the Hootananny folks are now celebrating their tenth anniversary at this big boozer with a bustling garden on Effra Road. After a backfiring Scottish themed start, the venue soon settled into becoming a great live venue for roots, rock and reggae bands, DJ nights and the wonderful monthly Brixton Book vibes of the 414, you really should make the effort, if only once. Easily one of Brixton’s oldest clubs – it’s been here over 30 years - its future is now in doubt as evil developers want to flatten this friendly, two-room Coldharbour Lane club and turn it into bloody luxury flats. Because we need more of them. This Friday night is a benefit for Cancer Research UK, and invites trance loving punters to don their day-glo pants and swirl their glowsticks with gusto till 7am.

Jam. Their weekend of celebrations sees renegade roots and dub producer Wrongtom mashing up with legendary breakbeat/jungle MCs The Ragga Twins on Friday night. Life and soul of the party S

oul songstress Hilary Mwelwa is returning to the Hideaway for two nights.

The north London based singer, who goes by the stage name Hil St Soul, released her debut album Soul Organic in 1999, which featured a cover of Aretha Franklin’s Until You Come Back To Me. The track has been played on Jazz FM and Soul and Smooth Jazz radio stations all over the world for over 17 years.

“I have four albums, so I select songs from each of those albums for my gigs,” Hilary told the Weekender. “I include songs people know –there are some songs you can’t get from like Smile. There are standard songs I have to perform, and I mix it up with my own.”

The performer plays at the Hideaway about twice a year.

“The audience are really up for it, the acoustics are amazing, and it’s a very good size venue –not too big, not too small,” she said.

Hilary has a band of six musicians. “With my own stuff I can do quite stripped down, but with the classic soul songs it’s very produced material, there’s a lot going on. Sometimes I’ll have a six-piece band and a guy on trumpet.”

A BBC Music review of Hilary said “it’s rare in the soul arena for UK based acts to give the Americans a run for their money but Hil St Soul seem on track to do just that.” Aren’t British people making soul music? “I don’t know.

Music is music,” she said. “I’ve got a nice little fan base in America.

I guess Motown was Detroit, the south is bluesy, I’m not really sure where soul came from.”

The early part of her career was spent touring in the US, and all over Europe, including Glastonbury. “I played with Macy Gray in Norway or somewhere like that. It was a festival and she was the headlining act. I was fortunate to perform on the same stage.

It’s just surreal, especially when you’re just starting out.”

Levi goes back to his roots Brixton musician, chef and TV personality Levi Roots made a splash on Dragon’s Den with his Reggae Reggae BBQ sauce.

Now it’s his refined musical taste that’s making waves with a new compilation album Reggae Reggae Hits, featuring his favourite music from Bob Marley and the Wailers, Shaggy, Johnny Nash, and many more.

Levi was asked to curate 60 reggae anthems for the album. “It was fantastic to be asked to do it, especially if you come from the music world,” he told the Weekender. “To choose your favourite songs, and put it together; it’s a great opportunity.”

It’s not about new songs. “I wouldn’t say they’re my favourite songs, they’re my favourite memories,” he said. “When you’re at a barbecue you don’t want to hear new music.

You want to know all the words, and hear music that brings back great memories.”

The album includes some of Levi’s own songs, including A Message to you Rudi, and Don’t Worry Be Happy, alongside classics Baby I love your Way, UB40’s cover of I Got You Babe, I want to wake up with you, and Sean Kingston’s Beautiful Girls. “I know the public I’m targeting with this album. It’s all hits, there’s hardly anything on there that wasn’t a massive hit,” he said.

Narrowing the list down to just 60 was the hardest part. “It was so difficult. I had to leave a few things out. I love Desmond Dekker, but Desmond has had so many top hits, more than Bob Marley. I left four in, but I’ve taken about five out. They sent 100 tracks, I had to whittle it down.”

“I added a few new ones that wasn’t on their repertoire. This is my album,

I’ve got to get these in, this is my greatest memories, and I hope it stirs up memories for people.”

The Jamaican born Brixtonite opened his first restaurant in 2015 in Westfield Stratford City, following the release of his Reggae Reggae Cookbook in 2008. “I do a lot of cooking now,” he says. “My mantra is put some music in the food. I want people to be around the barbecue

this summer and put this album on.”

His recipe for success is “don’t cook with a frown on your face. Put some music on and get a good vibe.”

Staying true to his south London roots, Levi still calls Brixton home.

“It’s important to be grounded. A lot of people make it and before you know it they move to north London,” he said. “I made a promise that if God ever blessed me, I want to see the same people l I’ve always seen.

It was Brixton market that inspired me to make my Reggae Reggae sauce, buying products from Electric Avenue. And I went to school there, my Mum was there, I love the Village, and I go to Lambeth Country Show every year.” He doesn’t always perform though. “I try not to hog the stage in Brixton!”

incoln-based actress Sue Hodge is saying Allo Allo again with a new stage show.

The actress shot to fame playing waitress Mimi Labonq in David Croft’s BBC sitcom, set in a café in Germanoccupied France during World War II. “This show is the truth behind the making. The cock-ups, and outtakes and things you don’t know,” Sue told the Weekender. “It’s set to music, sort of a Grandma’s parlour thing –some of the songs are recognisable like Thank Heavens for Little Girls but then there’s a Mimi Labonq theme that I wrote and an Allo Allo can-can that mentions every character.” Sue is married to the musical director Keith, who plays the piano in the stage show.

“I’ve done a couple of cruise ships, which is where I put this idea together; I thought wouldn’t it be better if I had a show rather than just doing a Q and A and it went absolute diamond.”

The performer has also written a memoir, from the perspective of Mimi.

“It’s about the day she got asked to join this new family and travelled from France to London. It’s the truth, but written from her rather than me,” she continued.

Mimi joined the sitcom in the fourth season and stayed on until the final episode. “I’ve never let her go,” Sue said. “Everybody always thinks ‘I need the big break or Tinseltown’ and then they spend years afterwards in denial trying to get rid of the character that made them famous or complaining about being typecast but I’ve never let her go. I’ve used her,” she said.

Sue was 28, performing in a new Shakespeare company’s production of a Midsummer Night’s Dream when she was spotted by casting director.

“I didn’t know anything about it until the following year, when my agent said David Croft would like a meeting with you.”

Life was rosy with commissions for sculpture coming in and his paintings selling steadily. But then Donald Trump wanted to build a dividing wall between the US and Mexico, and a majority of British people wanted to create a division between us and mainland Europe on the back of an immigration ticket. Labonq fest for Mimi and You Rang My Lord. “They used to turn the hall into whatever period it was. They turned it into the chateau [the main set for ‘Allo ‘Allo] at the front, and the back was used for exterior shots,” Sue explained. “We all used to live there for three months of filming. They’d say batten down the hatches; the ‘Allo mob are back in town.”

It’s clear that the vibe off-set was as hilarious as onscreen. “We were monsters. It was like a horrible school outing. We were pranksters, and we’d been given this gold dust on a plate. It was absolutely marvellous,” the actress recalled. “We were worn out. We would live, eat, sleep, drink this programme. When the TV series stopped, we went straight into the stage show, and then we were scheduled to come back on TV. For six years, this was my life.”

The stage show proved as successful as the television hit. “A lot don’t translate from screen to stage

but, ‘Allo actually did. I’ve never ever heard laughter in a theatre like the ‘Allo stage show. We even got the Royal Family there–Prince Edward came to see it.” The show was a hit with the royals. “The Queen mother stopped a dinner party at Clarence House once and they wheeled in a monitor so she could watch –she was such a fun,” Sue laughed. The stage show also toured around Australia in 2007. “We’re very big down under,” she said. “We did six months all over Australia. We went to Perth twice because of the demand, for a six week run, and they were queuing down the streets. The chap who ran the theatre in Perth said we’d made him his first million.”

The ‘Allo gang are still close knit.

“It was an extraordinary time. We still all meet up and we do lots of charity events, which is lovely. We were so fortunate to have this and it’s lovely give to keep it alive,” she said.

The show is hugely popular in

Bulgaria, Poland, France, and Holland and came in at thirteen on BBC2’s Britain’s Best Sitcom, in 2004. “ We all got flown out to Bulgaria two years ago because a lady I met said ‘if you came out with ‘Allo, it would be like the Beatles,’ and it was. We were absolutely mobbed.”

The actress can’t really escape Mimi wherever she goes. “People come up and shout ‘Mimi’ or staff at hotels say ‘good moaning’ to us. I was in a cab recently and I gave the wrong directions and the cab driver said ‘you stupid woman.’”

Nunhead artist in Rochester mankind. ‘I thought that humanity,’ began the artist when we met at his exhibition in Rochester Cathedral, ‘was about togetherness, not building walls.’ He has since spent the past two years creating that family in steel.

Now, with Trump as President and Brexit under way, Rafael is unsure whether he will be allowed to stay here because he is still technically an American citizen. He has already spent thousands of pounds on becoming British on the insistence of his English family, but it hasn’t been as straightforward as he hoped.

artist who knows the mean streets of New York. The structures have a soft, flowing look to them, they invite you to touch - stroke them even.

In fact, as we talked in front of his monumental Quartet, four figures conjoined, he stopped to point out a lady touching a sculpture. “Look!

Look!’ he whispered excitedly - and in reverence to our surroundings - ‘She’s touching… I wish more people would do that.’

Family Tree is inspired by the thought that we are all connected.

The huge sculptures can breathe and be free in the space a cathedral can provide. Like the stained glass windows, they allow the viewer to simultaneously look at them and

through them, because they do not block your view but add to it.

This is the penultimate venue on a tour of the country’s major cathedrals, with the final exhibition in Wells where he will also give a talk about his art books at the Literature Festival there.

After that it will be back to sorting out his status as a Brit and his next exhibition. There was a hint that he may show a couple of pieces in a new Bermondsey gallery if it is spacious enough to not smother the work.

Tutu cool for school Clapham's Russian ballet dancers to put on West End show for youngsters

lapham’s London Russian Ballet School (LRBS) has joined forces with the world famous Bolshoi Ballet to stage a special performance at the London Palladium, enabling 800 children from Lambeth and surrounding areas to visit a theatre for the first time.

Leading Bolshoi dancers, including Ekaterina Krysanova, Semyon Chudin, Maria Alexandrova and Vladislav Lantratov, are participating in an outstanding programme with Clapham’s LRBS students that includes the premiere of a new work and the spectacular classic Don Quixote.

LRBS director Harriet Pickering said the school aims to make ballet more accessible. “The school is a charity so we put everything back into the school,” she said. “We try to make it possible for anyone to attend our school.”

Their students dance at a “very high level.” “Our teachers are mainly from the most famous

companies in Russia, and trained in the Soviet generation when Russian ballet was technically really incredible,” Harriet explained. “Our artistic director Evgeny Goremykin danced with the Bolshoi Ballet for 20 years and so he passes on the technique and knowledge he himself received.”

"We want our students to have choices in life and we educate academically as well as teaching ballet. If you’re going to be an artist, you must be educated. It is important to see dancers on stage who have received a cultural and rich education,” Harriet said.

"It’s a very competitive world; we hope our students will all dance professionally but maybe they will decide to go to university instead, or when they have finished their ballet career they could change paths, so at least they’re equipped for the modern world.

Our students are well rounded individuals who have choices as well as being technically very well trained to a high standard. They love their work.”

The school has a strong

outreach program in Lambeth where they perform regularly for local school children. “As part of this performance at the London Palladium, 800 children will visit a theatre –many of them for the first time. Their first experience of ballet will be at a really high level with some of the greatest dancers in the world dancing for them while our students will perform with these wonderful artists,” Harriet said. “Ballet students practice every day in a class because they want to perform on the stage, and this is an opportunity for our students to develop as artists as they will see the very best, and dance alongside them. What an amazing experience for them.”

Harriet hopes attending the performance will inspire some future young ballerinas to start taking classes –and particularly male dancers. “We want more boys!” she said. “The long-term objective is people will see the school and see its work and think ‘they might make it possible for me to dance’.” 70 percent of their students receive subsidised

training, which is around a 40 percent reduction on term prices.

It’s ideal to start ballet at age ten; from age 14 upwards students may study at LRBS vocationally but they also take children for after school ballet lessons. “We have children who come every day after school and we recruit them into the school from age 14 full time. We have small GCSE groups as well. It is very hard work but we find the students love it and just flower before our eyes.

It is wonderful to see,” the director said.

The plan is to have more performances, like the Palladium event, next year. “It is a wonderful opportunity to work with these inspirational artists from Russia.

It is a very simple vision: they show their art for young children in a theatre setting, nothing more nothing less,” Harriet said. “We want ordinary people to come along, and that’s why the tickets are £20, £30 or £50, to make it accessible, and affordable for ordinary people.”

“We have to make an effort to do these things; to give people

educational and enriching experiences, something outside of their own life. Russian ballet is extremely beautiful. We’re very excited about this.”

The new piece of choreography created for this performance is then being taken out as part of the school’s outreach work –a mix of contemporary and classical styles.

London Russian Ballet School started in 2010, and has just received planning permission to develop its site on Clapham Manor Street.

The school also has classes for adults who really love its uncompromising approach: “It’s incredibly good for you, and total relaxation when the mind and body work together.”

Monkeying around We head for new heights at Battersea's Go Ape

M

y legs are wobbling as much as the platform I’m standing on. With arms outstretched I begin to shuffle along a very narrow log. Looking down at the clear 45 foot drop beneath me I suddenly remember that I have always been afraid of heights.

I’m sure, like many people, the temptation to confront and defeat a fear of heights was the main appeal when booking a place at the Go Ape obstacle course. The thought of swinging through the trees via zip wires and negotiating wobbly rope bridges was just too good to miss. But the prerehearsed Tarzan vocals quickly became a frightened whimper.

With the highest part of the course just under fourteen metres above the ground you won’t want to look down to spot the rest of your tribe. If a full combination of obstacles and heights are really not your thing then there are a variety of routes to take ranging from easy to extreme. All together the course covers a spiralling distance of 730 metres, in three stages.

family there is a Tree Top Junior option right beside the main course which peaks at six metres and is open to all ages.

Before being allowed anywhere near a safety harness each participant is required to read a list of rules and safety guidelines when signing in. All harnesses are tightly adjusted by a qualified instructor to fit each individual.

And a recap of the safety rules, with practical demonstrations, is carried out in a safe miniature

course environment before being allowed to proceed to the main course. The attention to safety is highly reassuring.

Two hefty safety clips dangle down between your knees from the waist of your safety harness (and occasionally bash into your shins). One of these clips slots onto a safety line as soon as you ascend the steps to begin each of the three sections of the course. There is no way to disconnect from the safety line

other than to walk down the steps to ground level at the start or the end of each of the three sections. The second clip acts as a safety backup that you can use each time you step off a platform to take on a zip wire or a wobbly suspended obstacle.

Feeling so reassured at this point by the safety equipment and the confidence of the instructors, I totally forgot about my fear of heights and was ready to leap off a 45 foot platform.

It’s a good idea to wear sturdy shoes for this activity. Sandals, slip off, open toes and heels will not go down well at the pre-course briefing and will most likely result in an early trip home. The same goes for personal items such as mobile phones and keys which may fall and injure members of the public walking below the course.

Lockers are provided and staff can also look after larger items such as backpacks and handbags.

The Tree Top Adventure course is broken into three sections from easy to hard. Some of the obstacles include suspended stepping stones, rope bridges and balancing logs. To add a little bit more adrenaline to the

experience, if you really need to, you can try negotiating these obstacles without holding on to the safety lines with your hands for that extra feeling of vulnerability.

Some of the tree top platforms are so high that they sway slightly as you stand on them; it feels like standing in the crow’s nest up a mast of a tall ship.

The site instructors keep a close eye on every section of the course throughout the day to make sure that nobody is breaking the rules or to help anyone who may need help.

Go Ape has created a very safe and well-designed course that has something to offer to all ranges of confidence and ability. The Tree Top Adventure course can take up to two hours, and the junior course around one hour. With a long and fast zip wire at the end of each section you’ll be screaming like Tarzan through the trees of Battersea Park.

But crucially your book covers what happened afterwards. Can you sum up the events in the book for us?

s Christopher Nolan’s latest film Dunkirk hits theatres, Saul David has just released a painstakingly researched account of the fallout of Dunkirk with south London publisher Endeavour Press.

In After Dunkirk, the Bath-based British academic historian and broadcaster foregrounds the overlooked 51st Highland Division, left behind on the French shores long after the epic rescue operation depicted in the recent cinematic epic.

We spoke to him about the methods and motivation behind his latest work of nonfiction.

It concentrates on the dramatic story of the famous 51st (Highland) Division, an elite Scottish formation that was serving in the Maginot Line when the Germans broke through the French lines and cut off the rest of the BEF and the best French armies in Belgium in May 1940. The Highland Division fought on after Dunkirk - as did thousands of other British troops - in a series of defensive battles in northern France and was eventually forced to surrender to General Erwin Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division at the little Norman seaport of St Valery on 12 June 1940. More than 1,000 Highlanders were killed; a further 10,000 spent five years in German POW camps.

Some of the accounts are vividly recreated with specific weapons, injuries sustained etc. Can you tell us a little more about how you researched the book?

I wanted the story to be told in the words of those who were there,

and eventually tracked down and interviewed more than a hundred former members of the Highland Division from across the UK. I also gathered scores of diaries, letters, memoirs and official documents so that I could chart, for the first time, the dramatic and tragic story of this doomed division. I began the research when I was 25, and the book was originally published three years later. The look on the face of some of the veterans when a young fresh-faced ‘historian’ appeared on their doorstep - they were clearly expecting someone much older - was a sight to behold.

Can you say something about Churchill and the political situation with regards to the book?

I hugely admire Churchill. Only he could have got Britain out of the hole it found itself in in late May 1940, a time when many of his Cabinet colleagues wanted to sue for peace.

But his willingness to sacrifice the Highland Division for political ends was not his finest hour. He insisted that the Highlanders remained in France after Dunkirk in the hope that they would encourage the French to fight on. This, however, was only justifiable if there had ever been a realistic chance of keeping France in the war. In my view there was not.

Most of the signals Churchill was getting from the French political and military leaders at this time were to

the effect that defeat was inevitable and it would be followed by an armistice. One Highland officer wrote: ‘It has always been abundantly clear to me that no Division has ever been more uselessly sacrificed. It could have been got away a good week before but the powers that be…had come to the conclusion that there was a capacity for resistance in France which was not actually there.'

What did you think of the recent Christopher Nolan film about Dunkirk? And what's your next project?

I loved the film. What it lacked in narrative coherence it more than made up for as a visceral cinematic experience. You really felt you were back in 1940: in the seat of a fighter plane, the wheelhouse of a small boat and on the shell-torn beaches of Dunkirk. It took a few liberties with the historical record, but what feature film doesn’t? Talking of films, I’m very excited about my next project: the story of a top-secret unit of US/ Canadian commandos who are given mission impossible in the mountains of Italy and pull it off. The working title is: The Force. I’m off to the US to begin my research tomorrow. It should be in the bookshops (and hopefully on the silver screen) in 2019.

The famous Bermondsey Street dog show returns again this year to pick out Southwark’s best pooches.

Owner of Holly&Lil collar makers and groomers Elaine Jones has been running the show since the festival first began ten years ago. This year’s event will be judged by dog trainer Robert Alleyne, as seen on the BBC’s Dog Borstal. Categories include The Lily Class for Best Pedigree Gal, The Eddie Class for Best Pedigree Boy, The Holly Class for Best Mashup for mongrels, and the Gus Class where anything goes and dogs can show off their tricks and talents, as well as an award for Best in Show. Prize winners receive a Holly&Lil voucher and all entrants receive a rosette.

Elaine first opened Holly&Lil on Bermondsey Street 12 years ago, selling unique handmade leather dog collars.

The shop was named after Elaine and her business partner’s own dogs. The pair started out making collars for their pets with the company growing from there. Elaine designs all the collars herself, which are made in England. Two

Café society There’s a new kid on the block in Bermondsey Street, and it’s not short on small plates or style, writes Laura Burgoine...

No 83 Bar and Kitchen has moved into the café space at the Fashion and Textile Museum, run by independent company, Leafi, who have nine cafés and restaurants, including the café in Foyles Charing Cross. “Museums are our speciality,” manager Richard Shaw says. The Geffrye in Hoxton, Turner Contemporary, and St John’s Smith Square are all on the company’s portfolio.

The Bermondsey Street space has been freshly painted a Gulf Stream blue, with piles of luxurious cushions, and new furniture. On the recent Tuesday morning I had coffee with Richard, Leafi founder Liam Farrell, and the company director Rod Kemp, they were stringing up cactus fairy-lights, and laughing about the flamingo and Eiffel Tower snowglobes Liam has collected for each table. Since taking over, they’ve installed a kitchen, created a new menu, which will change monthly, and sourced as many local suppliers as possible.

“This is our first high street venture,” Richard says. “Bermondsey Street is known for food and drink and what we offer reflects that.”

Homemade cakes are made on site, served alongside Hackney based Square Root Soda, and bread from Maltby Street bakers St John.

I can attest for the coffee, from Extract Coffee Roasters, which is excellent.

The chic, relaxed spot is a welcome addition to the high-fashion street. Whether you fancy a post-exhibition vino or a leisurely, healthy weekend brunch, I suspect No 83 will be the kind of place that’s always in fashion.

SE16 new builds making waves

Talk to people from Rotherhithe, and they’ll tell you Canada Water is a tube stop, writes Laura Burgoine...

Or that bus station. Talk to property developers, and they’ll insist Canada Water is a destination. At an exclusive preview of the new luxury development London Square Canada Water, the Weekender got a glimpse into what lies ahead for the rapidly changing area.

There’s already Southwark Council’s £2 billion masterplan, which includes developing a new town centre, 900 new homes, a state of the art library, and public plaza, with the Shard’s Irvine Sellar one of the developers involved. At the same time, lunchtime street food carts have been popping up on the square, alongside bigger venues like the very cool Hawker House street food market, and Printworks –a 6000-capacity superclub housed in the old Metro and Evening Standard printing

Printworks has played host to everyone from Gorillaz to Stormzy to Mulberry catwalk models, and was used for the filming of Star Wars: Rogue One followed by a Secret Cinema Star Wars event. Canada Water is putting itself on the map; build it, and they will come. And boy are they building.

The ‘luxury collection’ on Quebec Way, which is due for completion in the first quarter of 2018, has 95 one, two, and three bedroom apartments, designed by Assael Architects. One bedroom apartments start at £520,000.

The modern new build has ‘hit and miss’ brickwork (that’s an architectural style), and every flat has either a balcony or a roof terrace, and access to a communal courtyard, and onsite concierge.

Spread across a one acre site, the ground floor spaces will be rented out to offices or businesses, so there might be an onsite café/ deli/bar. Maybe even a Waitrose,

which is real estate speak for ‘your property just went up in value.’

The area has grown alongside Canary Wharf, and developers predict it’s the city workers and Canary Wharf types who’ll be in the market for London Square.

Half of the apartments are already sold, with a lot of foreign investment from Asia, and the Middle East.

I viewed a showroom of the one-bedroom apartments. A very decent size, light, and super modern, all the apartments have hard wood floors, fitted kitchens

with Siemens appliances, and underfloor heating. The flats are identikit, though if you buy early you can have a choice of carpet colour and bathroom colour schemes. Like the sea of suits in Canary Wharf at lunchtime, everything is basically grey or taupe. It’s ideal if you don’t want to make any design decisions.

Everything is done for you, and it’s done well. Forget the endless trips to B&Q, and the trail of dodgy tradesmen that most new buyers grapple with –all you’d have to do is pick a sofa from Loaf or Made,

and move right in.

The balconies are a real selling point, boasting views of Canary Wharf and the city, with enough room for an outdoor dining set. The whole place feels like a boutique hotel. It’s stylish and neutral inside, and quiet and leafy outside. Sales and Marketing Director at London Square, Rebecca Littler said they expect to see considerable interest from professionals working in the City or Canary Wharf.

“With Canada Water on the cusp of significant regeneration, savvy buyers understand that a property in the area has excellent investment potential and everincreasing rental yields,” she said.

In the Market for great food By the time I had walked up Anerley Hill to Crystal Palace Market I was ready for a drink. But Anerley is some hill so all I could manage was water. ‘Cold, and plenty of it, please,’ I rasped.

My lunching companion, Fiona, was already there, equipped with tape measure and writing pad, ready to measure up and take notes! She had somewhat misconstrued my invitation to lunch as some sort of DIY mission! Don’t ask.

Crystal Palace Market is all about great meat and fish. You can see the elegant swimmers on a bed of crushed ice at the front of the open kitchen, and the menu tells you exactly where the meats come from. Fiona declares she is a vegan straight after the waiter informs us there is no Crystal Palace Market Salad. I coughed, spluttered and took a hefty swig of an extremely smooth Pinot Noir. Fiona sipped on her water.

‘I bet the Goats’ Cheese Croquettes are nice,’ I said hopefully.

Fiona is not a complainer; she’d had a good week and no salad deficit was going to spoil that. The croquettes were actually ‘wonderful’, she said after her first course. They looked

good too.

I began with the Seabass and Crab Ceviche. It came with a mango sauce that was both unexpected and very good.

Bolstered by recent good fortune, Fiona had lots to tell, so I was updated on her ongoing creative projects, council disputes (won), furniture disputes (won), allotment poachers and a device that helps her concentrate more and hear better. I was just about to mention that she

misheard me and brought a tape measure to lunch when our main courses arrived.

Across the table was a sea of green. My fellow luncher had opted for the last remaining vegetable option: Gnocchi with a Creamy Mint and Pea Puree and Green Beans. A plate of gnocchi always looks good to me, even when it is just one colour.

I chose the Lamb Chops (Devon).

They were not those petite, one-bite cutlets, but thick and juicy slabs of

meat. Beautiful. All three of them.

And the salad that accompanied the chops had the most delicious dressing. Our server explained that it was created from grain mustard, orange, lime and lemon juices.

So simple but so effective. The lunchtime rush had diminished somewhat by now and the sun had broke through the clouds, so we sat chatting and sipping at our respective drinks. Our informative waitress appeared behind me and like a devil on my shoulder uttered those dangerous words of temptation: ‘Would you like to see the dessert menu?’

Fiona, who had been unable to finish off all her gnocchi, made a noise of surrender and mentioned something about being too full, but I’m a professional and made of sterner stuff. ‘It won’t hurt to have a little look, will it?’

From that point on it wasn’t difficult to lure Fiona in. In fact, it was she who chose the Pineapple and White Chocolate Sauce for sharing! It was like a trip back to the days of fondues, except this was chunks of pineapple to be dipped in a sauce of white chocolate. How could you not fall in love with that?

The Crystal Palace Market is very special. All the food looks good, as well as tastes good.

New gym raises the bar A

new boutique gym is raising the bar in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe; the Weekender went down for a trial run.

The Lodge Space has been built on the site of the old Southwark Park Keeper’s lodge. It’s very swanky for a gym –a far cry from Seven Islands, down the road, with its hospital lighting and worn-in yoga mats. The Lodge Space is all wooden floors, pristine equipment, and imported Indian furniture. It’s also deceptively big with a custombuilt yoga studio with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the park, a training room for classes, including TRX and aerial yoga, downstairs therapy rooms for Gong Bath meditation sessions and holistic therapies, and a sprawling café offering Ozone coffee, salads, and low sugar treats, all made fresh on site. The café steps out onto a walled garden, which will play host to events, pop-up restaurants, and a fire pit.

We began with a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class, and were sweating within minutes, which is always a good sign. It was a constant, tough workout that flew by, aided by a great play list and small class sizes. The instructor corrected our techniques and posture and made sure we warmed up and stretched properly.

Next up was yoga on the fanciest mats I’ve ever set foot on. Noslip, sweat-proof, these really enhanced the workout. But it was the teacher who really stood out –the Wednesday lunchtime class is a must for local yogis. It’s really dynamic, challenging and so serene looking out on the green of Southwark Park. Again, we had an intimate class of four and the teacher made adjustments and stayed afterwards to give advice and tips. The teachers at the Lodge Space really focus on technique and the importance of doing exercises properly, rather than just going hard and fast.

I was most excited about Glute Camp because, let’s face it, we live in a Kardashian age. The glutes are the biggest muscle in the body, our instructor told us. So it only makes sense to have an entire one-hour class dedicated to them.

The bottom line: this is a really hard class. It combines all the pain of your average Legs, Bums, Tummies class with non-stop toning. There’s pleasingly less lunges and squats than I imagined because, despite what everyone thinks, thousands of squats aren’t the way to buns of steel. Instead, we did a lot of those balletic-type floor exercises with extensions and pulsing, and isometric bridges. After two you’re wincing, by ten you’re crying. In a

good way.

We finished the week with a relaxing Sound Healing Meditation session. Our practitioner Andrea Moretti had an orchestral gong from Germany, and bowls from Nepal, where he studied with a local master.

Specialising in reiki, hot water massage, and singing bowls sound massage, Andrea is passionate about the healing properties of this therapy. The ancient art plays on the vibrations, and bathes the patient in sound waves. You lie down, in the dark, with a blanket and a lavender eye mask, and it’s like being transported into space. I can only describe it as a total trip, completely consuming and mesmerising. The sound is beautiful; it’s like a live version of the Interstellar soundtrack.

It feels as though you’re being transporting to another realm. When our session came to an end, I sat up, disoriented, and was blurry eyed for about an hour afterwards. It truly felt like a readjustment coming back to reality. It’s a very unique experience, and a sensation well worth exploring.

he last of the summer months can be hot and humid - but August seems more like autumn. Temperatures have been cool, with strong westerly winds and occasional torrential downpours.

pruning the spring and summer flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus, Lavender, and Honeysuckle once they have finished flowering. To keep Lavender bushes from becoming woody with top heavy foliage - cut down the flower stems after the blooms have finished. These can be dried in

small bunches – the summery floral aroma will last many months.

As summer begins to slip away – it is time to think about ordering bulbs for spring displays. Daffodils (Narcissus) are popular and there are many different types to choose from; the dwarf ones which are more suited to window boxes/tubs such as the fragrant N. Cheerfulness, or N. ‘Jack Snipe’ and N. ‘Little Beauty’. The larger Daffodils – like N. ‘Cassata’ and N. ‘Fortune’ are for the borders and lovely to grow for cut flowers; once planted they will naturalise and appear each year. Scilla is another spring flowering plant - the dwarf variety S. Sibirica produces startlingly deep blue flowers, it tolerates semi shade and is apparently squirrel proof!

There are still numerous plants to enjoy in the late summer garden such as the bright, cheerful giant Sunflowers. Summer bedding plants – geraniums and petunias continue to give showy displays in window boxes and hanging baskets. Fuchsias have produced exceptional flower displays this season. The Calendula or ‘pot marigold’ is a modest summer annual - with its bright orange or golden yellow flowers; grown in large clumps it’s

always impressive and a delight to see.

Calendula also has hidden talents - it is a medicinal plant and probably one of the most useful in the herbalist’s dispensary. Calendula is described as an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral – and used to treat a range of conditions from inflamed mucous membranes, gastric ulcers to poorly healing wounds, burns, eczema, and acne; Calendula is often found in herbal skin creams. The plant can cause an allergic reaction although rare, but should not be used to treat illness except under the guidance of a qualified herbalist.

Sow seeds for the hardier salad plants such as lamb’s lettuce, Winter density and Lettuce Veneziana to ensure an early supply of tasty leaves; grow these plants in containers and window boxes as a change from the usual ornamentals.

Increase stocks of herb plants for next year - take 4” cuttings of Rosemary, Lavender, Hyssop and Mint. Remove lower leaves (up to about an inch), place cuttings in sandy soil in

containers or directly in open sheltered ground, provide some covering (a cloche) to protect from sun and wind (otherwise the cuttings will dry out and are likely to fail). Keep the soil moist and mist leaves every other day.

he ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ will help finance over a quarter of mortgages in the UK in 2017, according to research by Legal and General[1]. The report shows that ‘BOMAD’ is equivalent to the ninth largest mortgage lender in the UK, paying over £6.9bn to help their children onto the property ladder.
