EALTH BOSSES are planning to reduce the number of hospital sites offering adult orthopaedic surgery within south east London from seven to two, as a way to cope with burgeoning demand.

As we report on page 11 this week, Dr Jonty Heaversedge, a GP and chair of NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), has said that bringing planned operations together into two orthopaedic centres for the area would provide many benefits for patients.

He told the News: “By bringing these operations together into two elective orthopaedic centres for south east London, we would be able to accept many more cases than we currently can, patients would have more certainty that their operation will go ahead, they will have a shorter stay in hospital and, perhaps most importantly, the evidence suggests they will have a better outcome from their surgery.”

The two centres would have dedicated operating theatres and ringfenced beds, which all orthopaedic consultants would use to carry out operations.

Other orthopaedic care, such as emergency and outpatient appointments will still continue at existing hospital sites - the proposals only concern planned operations.

While we’re not here arguing with the rationale for the proposals, we do urge readers to get involved in the consultation process on where the two orthopaedic centres would be based.

The NHS has provided six options; configurations of hospitals that could work as the orthopaedic centres. They are; Configuration 1: Guy’s Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham Configuration 2: Guy’s Hospital and Orpington Hospital Configuration 3: Guy’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s, Sidcup Configuration 4: University Hospital Lewisham and Orpington Hospital Configuration 5: University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Mary’s, Sidcup Configuration 6: Orpington Hospital and Queen Mary’s, Sidcup.

All but one of the options have one centre in London, but this means there’s a one in six chance that both centres could be in Kent - Orpington and Sidcup hospitals.

So it’s important that people have their say during the consultation period, as if the last option is the one chosen, it means anyone from the borough needing planned orthopaedic surgery will have to have it carried out in Kent.

We hope one of the other options is chosen, so that patients from Southwark have easier access.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL activist inspired a new play at the Old Vic, but was completely oblivious it was about him until he sat in the audience and watched it.

Camberwell man Donnachadh McCarthy inspired Rise, a play by Deirdre Kinahan about the hopes and fears we have about the environment.

After attempting to live as environmentally-friendly as possible for the last 24 years, Donnachadh was interviewed two years ago by a researcher working for the play.

But it was only after noticing

similarities between the main character of Rise and his own life that Donnachadh realised.

Playwright Deirdre listened through interviews with members of the public which had been collected prior to

writing, including one with Donnachadh

by Green party MP Caroline Lucas, and decided that Donnachadh’s was the most interesting and inspiring. Donnachadh was later invited to see the play by the theatre company, but had no idea what

Donnachadh said: “Imagine going to a play and realising that it was about you.

“I was sitting there watching the play thinking, hang on, this is about me.

“It kind of blew me away. It was a shock and also quite moving.”

Currently working as an eco-auditor, Donnachadh minimises his ecofootprint as much as possible and last year his gas bill was just £12 thanks to solar panels and a clean air compliant wood burner in his living room.

Donnachadh, who also writes a monthly Green Southwark column for the News, said: “The main reaction to seeing the play of course is my hope that it will inspire all those who see it, to start taking urgent action in the own lives and working to make Southwark carbon negative as fast as possible.”

Donnachadh doesn’t need to use a wheelie bin, and the amount of nonrecyclable waste he produces per year can fit into just four carrier bags.

Playwright Deirdre confirmed that Rise was based on Donnachadh to him on the opening night, and was pleased to finally meet her inspiration.

Deirdre said: “When I was listening to all of the interviews we’d done for the play, Donnachadh’s really popped out at me.

“When you’re charged to write a play you need a human story that everyone can relate to. The last thing you want is a two hour lecture.”

Originally from Ireland, Donnachadh is also the co-founder of the campaign group Stop Killing Cyclists, whose ‘die in’ protests have featured in the world media.

POLICE REVEAL SHOCKING KNIVES AND DRUGS HAULS FOUND IN ESTATE WEAPON SWEEPS

POLICE HAVE revealed a shocking haul of knives, drugs and cash discovered during a weapons sweep of estates in Camberwell.

Officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods Team operating in the South Camberwell council ward completed their latest sweep on August 15. Cops in Peckham and Camberwell Green also carried out sweeps last week.

Dedicated ward officer PC Michael Hughes told the News: “The thinking with gangs is that although a lot of

young men don’t carry knives on them at all times, they often stash them somewhere that may be hidden, but is still quickly accessible for them.

“We do these sweeps about once a month and we find all sorts, Rambo knives, hunting knives. Typically it’s in bushes, waste chutes, or down drain pipes and water pipes.

“Although I don’t want to say exactly which estate in question, we had quite a lot of interest from certain people watching what we were doing when we found this lot.”

Pc Hughes said he believes a reduction in the use of stop and search has partly led to an increase in knife crime.

He acknowledged that stop and

search could be a “controversial” strategy, but said carrying out sweeps like this could have a “great effect” on getting weapons off the streets. After the weapons are collected he said they are taken for forensics tests to check for matches on the Met Police’s DNA database.

“If we get a match between fingerprints, we can then warrant an arrest or invite a suspect in for an

interview,” Pc Hughes said.

“We also have council ward officers who have handed in machetes and really nasty knives they found in a cupboard in an estate in South Camberwell.

“On previous occasions we have issued search warrants on a suspect’s home and found keys to utility cupboards on their estate. We went in and found another huge stash. We

had a great result and it led to a six month sentence.”

Pc Hughes added that Southwark police would be “grateful” to hear from residents who believed there might be suspicious activity happening in their area, or a weapons stash on their estate.

A TWO-year-old girl fell from a fifth floor window near Southwark tube station on Friday, in a “tragic accident”.

The toddler fell from a window next to the balcony in Brookwood House in Webber Street last week, and was rushed to hospital shortly afterwards.

A police spokesperson told the News that the girl was now “recovering in hospital and doctors would like to think she will pull through”.

Police were called to the scene and investigated the cause of the accident over the course of a few days.

An ambulance crew, a Motorcycle Response Unit and an incident

response officer were called to the scene at 3:03pm.

A London Ambulance spokesperson said they took the toddler “as a priority to a hospital in east London”.

Victim, 19, was primary carer for mum, who suffers from diabetes

wo weeks since a bright and popular nineteen year old was brutally stabbed to death, police have told the News they are still missing a key witnesses who helped the victim before he died.

An emotional plea was made by the mum of Andrew Oteng-Owusu one week from the day he was attacked near his home, close to the Millwall stadium, on August 3.

The detective leading the investigation said he was still looking at a “blank canvas”, with no new witnesses coming forward.

The former St Thomas the Apostle Catholic College pupil was targeted in the intersection of Hornshay Srteet and Lovelinch Close at 11.40pm. As he walked home from the local shop, he was fatally stabbed in his right leg.

Andrew was the “primary carer” of his mourning mum Tina Ababio, who suffers from diabetes and problems with her kidneys. Every day her son would help her use dialysis.

“Andrew was a very gentle, humble and polite young man, helpful to everyone he knew, especially in the neighbourhood,” said Ms Ababio, 44.

The teenager had aspired to study IT and business at university in September, and was hoping to be

offered a place from the universities of Greenwich or Northampton.

Police say he had “no links to gangs or involvement in crime of any kind”.

Detective Inspector Mick Norman of Lewisham Police told the News: “The key witness we are looking for is a young black male who, after the stabbing happened, walked with Andrew to the block of flats where he lived.

“He is aged in his late teens or early to mid-20s and was wearing a white T-shirt and New Era baseball cap.

“We are desperate to speak to him in whatever form he chooses.”

DI Norman said he still had no leads on what the motive could have been, and did not have any direct witnesses to the attack. He said it possibly could have been a case of mistaken identity.

The detective said their investigation had involved canvassing as many local residents who might have seen or heard what happened, as well as interviewing everyone they could. “It’s a fourstorey estate,” DI Norman said.

“Where it happened, the incident would have been overlooked by a couple of hundred flats.”

Despite making it to King’s College Hospital A&E, Andrew was pronounced dead at 11.30am the next morning.

Ms Ababio told the News her son was in a stable condition after surgery, but complications followed.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. He would help me with everything.

He was so loving.”

“The doctors told me they were going to open up Andrew’s chest because he was having problems breathing. But they couldn’t find the problem,” she said.

“He was given fourteen pints of blood. He had internal bleeding and the surgeons couldn’t find where it was coming from. That’s when they told me he couldn’t survive.”

DI Norman said although the stab wounds were inflicted on Andrew’s

leg, as is often the case, “there is still a very real chance you will cause serious harm, whatever the intention”.

Ms Ababio told the News: “I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. He would help me with everything. He was so loving.

“Everyone on the estate knew Andrew because he would help anyone with crossing the road or carrying their bags. People I didn’t even know would tell me they knew my boy because he had helped them.

“Andrew mostly spent his time playing at home with his friends and with his computer. He would never do anything wrong.”

DI Norman said Ms Ababio was “holding it together remarkably well”. “She’s a lovely woman,” the officer said.

Andrew’s body has been taken in by the South London Coroner’s Service, and his mum has been informed that an inquest will follow.

MP Coyle: Why I back Owen Smith and why Labour party won’t split

MP NEIL Coyle has told the News why he supports Owen Smith over Jeremy Corbyn to lead the Labour Party, and why he does not believe the party will split.

Last week the Member of Parliament for Bermondsey and Old Southwark sent an email to his 1,500 local Labour members, saying he felt “deeply concerned about the parlous state of the national party”.

In his email, the outspoken critic of Jeremy Corbyn, who resigned from his shadow ministerial team after the EU referendum, said: “I've known Jeremy for about six years but he's sadly plunged our party into a crisis, and is intent on continuing despite holding the worst opposition leadership ratings ever recorded, and with more voters having made their minds up negatively about him than for previous leaders.

“There is so much to lose if this continues, especially given how many Labour voters from May last year now say they will not support our party.”

He went on to complain about the

treatment of fellow Labour MPs, citing that 40 women MPs had written to the leader to complain about bullying, hostility and intimidation within the party.

It was in the final paragraph of his message that Neil spoke about his preference for Smith over Corbyn, calling him a “new, more capable and stronger, unifying leader”.

Speaking to the News, he said: “We chose Owen Smith because we needed a single candidate to be the standard bearer. Someone left or centre left and who unifying and who is really keen to get on with it.

“In ten days Owen has put forward more substantial policy ideas than Jeremy had in ten months.

“In his new deal, Owen has talked about investing in the old industrial heartlands and in infrastructure. He is one of the only politicians talking about improving broadband across the country. We need to be able to compete with European cities like Berlin and Madrid to sell our services, which anyone working from home will know is difficult if we can’t rely on our internet supply.

“Owen is also clearly big on housing,

whereas Jeremy’s housing policy is exactly the same as we had in Ed Miliband’s manifesto.

“I want the party to survive and I think the best way is with a new leader.”

He also claimed his constituency members seemed to be bucking the national trend in favouring Owen Smith over Corbyn.

“I have had correspondence with about half my members directly now and those seeking Corbyn to go outnumber his supporters by about 3:1 which I hope will be reflected in the final voting,” Neil said.

Meanwhile he revealed that he “wanted to step down” from his role as private secretary to the shadow leader of the Commons before the European Union Referendum on June 23. He instead handed in his notice on June 27 with the mass exodus of shadow ministers from Corbyn’s office.

Asked about the chances of the party splitting after the leadership election, Neil told the News he did not know of any single Labour MP who had said they wanted the party to break in two.

Council gives £20 to 11-year-olds

SOUTHWARK: Every 11 year old in the borough will be given a free £20 voucher to open a savings account by the council double the original offer.

Any keen young saver in year six will have to sign up by September 2, as part of the Southwark Smart savers scheme launched last year.

The scheme aims to help young people save and teach them about how to be responsible with money.

The Smart Savers vouchers can be claimed by visiting any London Mutual Credit Branch, with a Southwark voucher letter, proof of address and child’s birth certificate or passport. To be able to claim this year’s voucher your child would need to have been born between 1 September 2004 and 31 August 2005.

Year three of the Smart Savers scheme will be launched in October and will be for children born between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006.

ELDERLY AND disabled groups across the borough are being offered big days out to the beach and visitors centres with a local bus-hire company.

The beanos are being offered to care homes, sheltered accommodation residents and community groups by London Hire, after a successful few years for the firm.

Nigel Farr, said: “We work closely with the community via the council and charities like Age UK to ensure less-able people can enjoy days out and events that many of us take for granted.

“We provide fully accessible transport with qualified drivers and assistants, and we have catered for major events including the transport for the Paralympics, the Wheelchair Rugby World Cup, as well as trips to the Hampton Court Flower Show.”

AFTER HELPING little ones cross the road at a Bermondsey primary school for six and a half years a much loved lollipop lady has retired to Kent.

Carol Paul, 68, worked at the Phoenix primary school as a lollipop

lady and also helped out at the Ilderton Primary School with the nursery and lunch times for two and a half years.

Carol said: “It was a good job. I loved the rapport with the mums and kids, they were all a nice bunch.

“On the last day of term I’d give all the kids lollipops, and sometimes give them cards on their birthdays.”

Carol plans to keep busy during her retirement by taking her granddaughter Sophie to school every day, and working on renovating her garden.

Night Tube to launch at weekend

SOUTHWARK: The first ever Night Tube services will launch on the Central and Victoria lines on Friday, offering a 24-hour service on Fridays and Saturdays.

Expansion to the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines will follow in autumn.

More than 100 police officers will be deployed to patrol the 144 stations that will now stay open throughout Friday and Saturday night.

Fears have been raised about the safety of the service, but Mayor Sadiq Khan has provided £3.4 million to cover the cost of the extra shifts.

Khan said: “The opening of the Night Tube marks the start of an exciting new chapter in London’s life.

“It will unlock the full potential of London’s night time economy and support the thousands of Londoners who travel to or from work at night.”

The long-awaited extension of the service comes after night bus usage has increased by 173% since 2000.

Transport for London also claim that by supporting the night-time economy, the 24-hour service will help boost the economy by £360 million.

Trains on the Jubilee and Victoria will run on average every 10 minutes, with standard off-peak charges applying.

Gymnastics club fundraising to buy new track

DULWICH: A £60,000 multi-use games area on the Kingswood Estate was unveiled last Thursday after the estate’s youth club came up with the idea.

MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, Helen Hayes, officially opened the games area which is marked out for football and basketball and is free to use.

Members of the estate’s youth club went to the tenants and residents association who supported the idea, and were awarded funding by their ward councillors through the Dulwich Community Council.

The Veolia Environmental Trust provided a grant of £38,020 and Southwark Council contributed £21,681.

Chair of Kingswood Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association’s sub-committee for the games area, Douglas Snelling said: “I want to thank the members of the sub-committee for all the input, hard work and advice they have given to this project.

“Without it, the MUGA [Multi Use Game Area], or the ‘kickabout area’ as it is now known, would not be here today.”

The Kingswood Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Association led the project over several years, with the support of councillors and the Veolia Environmental Trust.

The Veolia grant was made through the Landfill Communities Fund.

SOUTHWARK GYMNASTICS Club is fundraising to buy a new track for the borough’s talented youngsters feeling inspired by Britain’s success in Rio.

Over 400 young gymnasts from Southwark attend the club’s various sessions at Camberwell Leisure Centre and Brunswick Primary School.

But after nearly twenty years, the club’s directors are eyeing up a replacement 25-metre ‘tumbling track’ that could cost up to £17,000.

One of the club’s directors, Andrew Payne, has said that three gymnasts who are currently

competing at international level, with one in Team GB, have all had to move to other clubs that are better-equipped.

“It means Southwark Gymnastics is not getting the recognition it very much deserves,” he said.

“Local young gymnasts have to travel to Hastings, Gillingham and Andover for their crucial training before competitions, putting them at a great disadvantage.”

Although tumbling is not a discipline included in the Olympic Games, it requires a mixture of talents seen in artistic gymnastics and the skills witnessed in floor events and trampolining.

Another of the club’s directors, Shona Delvaille from Peckham, told

the News: “We currently have one that is twelve metres, but is not up to the standard we need. Having another one would really help the kids improve.

“The kids need one that is closer to the standard that they would be on in a competition, otherwise it will be difficult to get used to tracks at other clubs.

“I have been coming to this club since I was twelve, and now I help out with kids’ and adults’ classes.

We have a lot of talent in Southwark that we need to retain.”

The club has already raised £2,000, and another £450 has come from donations online.

Over 20,000 sign up to free gym and swim scheme SOUTHWARK: Over 20,000 residents have signed up to the council’s free swim and gym programme, which was launched on August 2.

The council has said 11,000 people signed up in the first month, adding to the 11,915 who had already signed up in the fourteen month pilot phase.

The scheme offers free access to swimming pools and gyms at all Southwark leisure centres, all day on Fridays, as well as on Saturday and Sunday afternoons after 2pm.

It follows an extension of the scheme for elderly residents, who now have free access seven days per week.

Councillor Maisie Anderson, cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure said: “With busy lifestyles, the rise of technology and the cost of living - getting fit is not easy. This scheme is a fantastic way of addressing the cost barrier that holds many people back.

“Many councils are finding it harder to fund schemes to tackle obesity and inactivity. While it’s been a challenge to deliver in the face of rising cuts, I am really proud of the work we have done on our new leisure contract that means this scheme will not cost the council much needed funds.”

Councillor Anderson also began the council’s Road to Rio challenge earlier this month, which celebrated the opening of the Olympic Games by urging residents to “run, walk, cycle, swim or even row” a total of 9,254km – the distance from Southwark to Rio de Janeiro.

Orthopaedic surgery could be carried out in Kent Proposals put forward to offer planned ops in just two sites across south east London

PROPOSALS TO reduce the number of adult orthopaedic service sites across south east London from seven to two are being considered by the NHS which means patients may have to have planned operations in Kent.

The plan is to create two centres with dedicated operating theatres and ring-fenced beds, which all orthopaedic consultants would use to carry out operations such as

replacing hip and knee joints as well as more complex surgery.

The two elective orthopaedic centres could be based at Guy’s Hospital, University Hospital Lewisham, Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup or Orpington Hospital in Kent.

There are currently six “potential combinations” for which two of the four sites will be chosen, with one potentially seeing patients travel out to Orpington Hospital and Queen Mary’s, Sidcup.

Any other orthopaedic care, such as emergency and outpatient

appointments will still continue at existing hospital sites.

An expected 25 per cent increase in demand over the next five years is one of the reasons for the proposals, led by south east London clinical commissioning groups, hospitals and other health services.

GP and chair of NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Dr Jonty Heaversedge said: “Services are already under immense pressure and simply won’t be able to cope with this additional demand. We have to find a solution for this.”

The NHS is trying to address long

patient waiting lists, and how to reduce cancelled surgery.

Dr Heaversedge added: “By bringing these operations together into two elective orthopaedic centres for south east London, we would be able to accept many more cases than we currently can, patients would have more certainty that their operation will go ahead, they will have a shorter stay in hospital and, perhaps most importantly, the evidence suggests they will have a better outcome from their surgery.”

Before any changes are made a full public consultation will be carried

out, which could take place later this year.

The potential six site configurations will be evaluated in September, taking into account patient travel times, affordability, patient experience and the NHS workforce.

The centres would be shared facilities with a dedicated team, including nurses and therapists on site, working alongside surgeons.

South East London NHS has proposed two sites as they claim it could be the most efficient solution, and would help patients in both inner and outer boroughs.

SOUTHWARK AND Lambeth have the highest rates for diagnoses of the sexually transmitted disease syphilis, research by a government health agency shows.

ELEVEN CARS were damaged during a fire in Peckham Rye on Sunday night that started after one vehicle’s electrical circuits caught alight.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters were called to the blaze in an underground car park in Aura Court.

One of the cars was completely damaged, while another ten were blackened by smoke or affected by the heat.

Thirty residents from the blocks of flats above had to be evacuated, though none required medical attention.

The LFB were called at 8.16pm and the fire was under control by 10.24pm. The fire crews attended from New Cross, Peckham, Forest Hill and Greenwich fire station.

Public Health England made the discovery after analysing data from 2015 for the amount of newlydiagnosed cases of syphilis in each area of the country.

The lowest rates were reported in Sutton, which had ten new cases, and Kingston upon Thames where it was diagnosed in thirteen new patients.

But topping the table with 477 new cases was Lambeth, followed

by Southwark with 290, while Tower Hamlets came in third with 195.

Sexual health specialist Dr Patrick French said: “The increase we are seeing in syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections is a

marker of a more general problem within sexual health and tackling this must be a priority across London.

“More awareness is needed around STIs, how they can be prevented and why it is important to have a check-up if you think you are at risk. Anyone having sex with new or casual partners should always use condoms and have regular sexual health checks.”

The research also showed a growing proportion of new cases were from heterosexual males, while 90 per cent of cases are found in homosexual men.

Like the majority of STI, syphilis is contracted via sexual intercourse or felatio.

The research also shows that 56 per cent of diagnoses from England of the disease were from London.

Public Health England also warns that the disturbing figures also represent a 163 per cent increase compared to the data collected in 2010.

Silwood garage fire

A GARAGE on the Silwood Estate in Rotherhithe caught fire in the early hours of Sunday, causing damage but no injuries.

Two fire engines attended the blaze on Millender Walk off Silwood Street on August 14 after being called at 2.35am.

Fire crews from Deptford and Old Kent Road stations attended the scene, and the fire was under control by 3.47am.

Southwark cabinet member for housing Councillor Stephanie Cryan said: “There was a fire on the Silwood estate at the weekend, which was dealt with quickly and cleared. Officers have

inspected the site to see what, if any, repairs are needed and ensure the area is made safe.”

The fire follows reports from a resident of the estate that homeless people are using the garages for shelter.

Cllr Cryan said: “We are aware there has been a slight increase in the number of reports of rough sleepers in the area over the last few weeks and resident service officers will be making inspections of the estate to reassure residents and importantly to make sure anyone who is rough sleeping is offered the right help and support.

“If any resident sees anyone sleeping rough I would ask them to call 020 7902 7941 to inform our support services so that we can provide that support as quickly as possible.”

POLICE HAVE released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to following a racially aggravated common assault.

The alleged incident happened on Monday, July 18 at 7pm at Elephant and Castle tube station.

A man made racial comments towards a man as he was boarding a lift to the ground level.

In the Northern Line exit booking hall the victim was then punched in

the jaw by the person who made the comments.

PC Ben Pereira of British Transport Police said: “I am keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

"This was an unprovoked attack

which has left the man shaken.

Everyone has the right to travel on the rail network without fear or intimidation.”

Council wants to build new flats where arch now stands - but campaigners fight to keep it

ONE YEAR after floating plans to demolish the Peckham Arch, Southwark Council has submitted plans for new flats and shopping space in Peckham Square.

A planning application includes details of nineteen new flats in three and fourstorey buildings in the square off Peckham High Street.

If approved, the £11.8m project could also see the removal of the Peckham Platform exhibition space, in favour of a wider square.

suggest 30 of the 58 “habitable rooms” in the flats could be for affordable rent, and a fraction of those as social rent. The ground floors would also include a mixture of gallery, co-work, and retail space.

But locals groups who have been banging the drum for protecting the nineteen-year-old Peckham Arch have accused the council “of having an agenda” to get it removed.

A spokesman from the Save Peckham Arch campaign told the News: “It’s unique and flamboyant. I believe what is unique to Peckham should not be replaced with buildings that are replicas of what we can find elsewhere.

“It would be extremely un-Peckham to get rid of our arch, and I think doing so would be a decision we would all live to regret, just like we regretted getting rid of Peckham Lido.

“We understand the requirement, but feel this would be better suited to another site. We don’t think the council has explored the alternatives.”

A planning statement within the application said: “The structure [of the arch] is in need of extensive maintenance, with the lighting system no longer functioning and the structure requiring cleaning and re-painting.

“The roof membrane is also nearing the end of its lifespan and a survey of the

roof is required.”

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “We know there are strong feelings about the arch, which has been a landmark for the town for many years.

“When we looked at the long term plans for Peckham and the acute need for new homes, especially bigger homes for families in social housing, and affordable office and work space we concluded that removing the arch was the best way forward.”

Will Alsop, the architect won the Stirling Prize in 2000 with his design of the Peckham Library, said the plan

would “destroy” an “important bit of townscape”.

Local architect Benny O’Looney told the News: “The arch was built as a 'celebratory arch'. A bold, grand gesture from Southwark Council... promising a renaissance for Peckham town centre, which was then at a low point.”

Dozens enjoy tea party for nonagenarians

DOZENS OF people over the age of 90 enjoyed a special tea party on Monday at the Time & Talents community charity.

The party included live musical entertainment, cakes based on recipes from the 1920s and 1930s, plenty of tea and even a drop of wine.

Some of the party-goers still work, drive and one 98-year-old woman took a trip on a speedboat last year.

Lifelong Rotherhithe resident Sarah Strout, 94, said: “I’m not too bothered about my age, I get up and keep looking after myself.”

Cathy Martin, 90, said: “The event is lovely, it’s just nice to socialise with all these people.”

Time & Talents created the event to appreciate the contributions of the elderly and to help them socialise, which many of them find difficult.

Director of Time and Talents Alex Evans said: “We realised what incredible stories they have, and we wanted to say thank you and show how much appreciation we have for them. It was about giving something back.”

The charity was founded in 1887, and runs targeted projects for people with high levels of need, such as isolated elderly people.

Volunteer Rochelle Gage said: “They don’t really get out too much, it’s nice that they have time to come out.”

The event follows the 90th birthday of the Queen in May, and although Her Majesty was unable to attend the event, a cut out mask of her face was passed around for any takers to wear.

Time & Talents group facilitator Cindy Glover said: “I think it’s affirming their resilience, and their ability to carry on, have a good time and it’s really important that we really appreciate them.

“It’s also to show that there is life after retirement and after 90.”

Time & Talents runs a befriending service for isolated older people, a gardening club and a club for people recovering from strokes and their carers.

‘I helped make Wellington bombers’

THE FIRST trip that Eileen O’Sullivan made outside of London was to Blackpool in 1942 to help build Vickers Wellington bombers.

Eileen, 92, was told to go to Blackpool to help spray the linen wings of the bomber with dope, (a type of lacquer), which formed the outer skin of the aircraft.

Originally from Bermondsey, Eileen had never even heard of Blackpool before she was sent there.

Eileen said: “People just didn’t used to travel back then like people do know.

“It was quite scary, but a bit exciting to be sent there. They gave us a pint of milk every day too.”

Eileen was married to her husband William for 54 years, who was part of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

In between gardening and seeing her five great grand-children Eileen visits the Time & Talents centre once a week.

She said: “I think it’s a very nice idea to get all these people together, and when you get my

age it can be a bit lonely.”

Eileen remembers clearly the Blitz targeting the Surrey Docks in 1940, when bombs were strapped to oil drums in an attempt to burn the timber ponds.

“The sky was just black with thick smoke. It was a scary time.”

Rita, 90, still work s at Harrods ’ food hall

RITA Pezzani still works at Harrods’ food hall at the grand age of 90.

Rita, from Peckham, told the News that she works two days a week at the prestigious Knightsbridge department store.

Her husband of 64 years Mario, 96, whose family are from Northern Italy, keep himself busy and still drives around London.

The couple met in their teens at a house party and went on to run an Italian restaurant in Islington called Marita, a combination of their two names.

Mario went to school in Italy, and when he came back to London he couldn’t speak a word of English.

At the Time & Talents event the guests were asked what advice they would give to their ten-yearold self.

Mario said to always obey your parents and Rita

advised: “You have got to be happy and respectful.”

The pair still visit Mario’s home town once a year, and are proud great-grand-parents to six great grand-children.

Mario said: “To be honest with you, it doesn’t feel any different

being this age.

“Apart from my legs I’ve got no problems, I’m still all here mentally.

“My mother lived to 104, she could remember Queen Victoria’s funeral.”

Gladys, 98, went on a speedboat last year as part of a day trip and described it as great fun.

Originally from Peckham, Gladys was six-months-old when the First World War finished and can clearly remember the Second World War. Gladys said: “I don’t think about my age very much. If I do I get a bit surprised, then I just don’t think about it.”

Her father Bertie was a driver in the First World War, and Gladys was five-years-old when he passed away.

Gladys said she didn’t have any secrets for reaching the age of 98, but reckons her love of swimming probably helped.

The former insurance worker said: “It’s probably in my genes, my cousin lived until they were 101.”

Reminiscing about the Second World War, Gladys said: “Some days it was scary. We just got on with it.

“One time a bomb hit our

house and it blew the roof right off.”

Since being born in 1918, Gladys has seen a lot of changes in the world.

Gladys said: “We didn’t have all the electric things when I was younger, we had to do everything by hand.”

THE HELP of a novel heart failure device and the goodwill of staff helped a heart patient marry his long-term partner in St Thomas’ Hospital chapel.

John Abbott, 64, from Brixton married his partner of 31 years Angela, 55, after cardiologists fitted a parachute device to support his heart, and ward staff who helped organise the last minute wedding on June 2.

After a heart attack eight years ago John has suffered from heart failure, and he has been a long term patient at the hospital.

Angela said: “Our wedding day was fantastic and only possible because of the skill, dedication and kindness of staff at the hospital.

“We’re very grateful to the doctors who did an amazing job which has extended John’s life enough for him to fulfil our wish to tie the knot.”

After John was taken into hospital earlier this year, the couple decided they wanted to get married.

As John isn’t able to leave the hospital, staff helped book the chapel and apply for a special licence to marry from the Archbishop of Canterbury. Angela said: “The Sister on John’s ward bought flowers for us while the heart failure nurse, Donna Abbott, loaned me a tiara, so that I had something borrowed.

“Everyone was so kind and staff even came along to our wedding ceremony so we had family, friends and hospital staff, it was wonderful.”

Heart failure clinical nurse specialist Charlotte Farron said: “We are delighted to have been able to facilitate one of John’s last wishes within our chapel at St Thomas’ Hospital.”

The parachute device is a type of stent which helps support the structure of the front side of John’s heart by partitioning the damaged muscle.

he Royal Mail was privatised by a Lib Dem Business Secretary under the coalition Government.

Sadly, this year it means many people have been in touch with me about poor services in SE1 and SE17 especially. The Crampton Street Royal Mail sorting office and collection point for missed mail is also up for closure despite frequent queues round the block demonstrating its use.

Locally, we also face the privatisation of two ‘crown’ Post Offices – on Blackfriars Road and on the Walworth Road.

Nationally, this policy of selling off the state owned post offices will cause 2,000 job losses with many communities facing the loss of vital services. I’ve asked if one local office could be helped by taking on the busy collection point from Crampton Street. This has so far been refused. Staff could face pay cuts, with taxpayers subsidising lower pay under private operators through housing benefits and tax credits.

Local residents also face travelling much further to collect mail from the Mandela Way depot, including older and disabled people. I’m working with councillors and local campaigners to press the Post Office and Royal Mail to do better. London is not a paranoid fortress

LAST WEEK the Met Police announced that they are deploying 600 additional armed officers in London, despite the fact that ‘there is currently no intelligence to suggest that there is an imminent threat to London and the United Kingdom’.

I am really unhappy about any increase in armed police. Rather than providing reassurance, it makes me feel very unsafe. As far as I know, there is no evidence that guns can combat or prevent terrorist attacks.

How would more armed police have helped stop 9.11, the London bombings, the massacres in Paris, Nice, etc?

I do not want the UK becoming more like the USA, with police likely to kill innocent people by over-reacting to perceived threats.

Stockwell was one too many. The London I know and love has never been a paranoid fortress, and I am seriously worried by any moves in that direction.

Southwark, do the right thing for disabled residents

MANY THANKS Southwark News for taking up this story of a local business woman who happens to be disabled but Southwark are frustrating her from running her business [Disabled business woman refused parking bay outside shop - as there’s not enough

demand, News, August 11].

We know unemployment is at a signifcantly higher rate for disabled residents than the fully able.

Something like two-thirds of disabled people are unemployed!

That’s terrible for the individuals concerned not earning a living and for society unable to tax income not earned.

So for Southwark Council to give no support and refuse the creation of disabled parking for employees and business owners where they work where the business isn’t big enough to have off street parking is sheer madness.

Come on Southwark you know you need to change your policies and do the right thing for such disabled residents.

When will you put in a disabled parking bay without a 4 hour limit for Hulys Arif?

Memories of a retired HGV driver

I PURCHASED a copy of your newspaper from a shop in Borough High Street from a meeting late at night. Two things on page 22 - memory jerkers - caught my eye.

Railway arches.

In the mid sixties the wine merchants at South Moulton Street, W1, outgrew its premises, and we decamped to Arch 212 Carlisle Lane, SE1.

I left five years later to join John Barkers in Kensington High Street as a cellarman. What memories.

The other thing was the lorry. A Ford D if I’m not mistaken. I’d just come back from abroad (Europe) in 1971 looking for a job

driving. This firm in Hounslow had a Ford D lorry, but it needed a lot of attention. I christened it Frankenstein, beacuse all the bits came off other lorries (bodywork, tires, etc).

I drove it for a year until that fateful day on the road to Hull, late in the evening, bang went the engine. It was towed to the main Ford deaklers fully loaded still.

They looked at it and said ‘you need a new engine, come back tomorrow and I’ll speak to your boss’.

To cut a long story short, I stayed at the local seamans’ mission hostel for two days. Finally, on the third day a phonecall from my boss. Get a train back, leave it there and I’ll arrange somethingh for the load, etc. So that’s how I left it.

Nevertheless, Allegro is not one of their most famous musicals but one that came after their big hits with Oklahoma and Carousel; it is a more serious piece that didn’t go down the oft-walked route of boy meets girl.

Hence, it did not go down well with theatergoers so was not the success hoped for.

And that is why I admire Southerland because he realises that what fans did not like back in 1947 is not relevant today because there are still great tunes in Allegro; people will not be judging it for its lack of political and social content now, in its first European premiere, but enjoying it because it is Rogers and Hammerstein.

On a set made up of stepladders and scaffold boards we see Joe Taylor as a respected small-town doctor who knows everyone - and their body parts – intimately. When his good wife has a baby boy, Joe Jnr, it is expected that he will become the town doctor too. In fact, it is so expected the townsfolk sing about making his birthday a holiday.

The pure air of Camberwell In the eighteenth century, physician and philanthropist Dr John Coakley Lettsom loved Grove Hill and all it offered

THERE WERE few things in the world that Doctor John Coakley Lettsom, philanthropist and physician, loved more than the views from his house in eighteenthcentury Camberwell, writes Owen Sheppard...

Though born in 1744 to a Quaker family in the West Indies, he was educated in England and moved to Grove Hill, the neighbourhood of genteel families like the Drapers and the Bowyers.

He purchased two-and-a-half acres of land to build his spectacular mansion: the site of a natural spring recognised as the place where the original Camberwell Well was dug.

His love for the Grove could be summed up with the remark: “for three quarters of the year the wind blew from the south towards London, and consequently for that part the air is as pure as the most rural situation can afford.”

There were few things that gave him greater delight than his rooftop views, which are still a subject of pride for the borough’s

residents today. Lettsom boasted he could glimpse “Blackfriars and the three main bridges in the city,” and the hamlets atop the hills of Hampstead and Highgate.

He described them as “a grand display of human elegance and wealth”. To the south was the crest of Sydenham Hill and the five telegraphs erected in response to the threat of an invasion by Napoleon.

Though Lettsom more modestly referred to it as “his villa”, the threestorey red brick building with marble chimneys took on an east and west wing.

In the East Wing he hung a huge painting of the Spanish Armada being defeated by Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Navy. The South Front was adorned with 26 Egyptian stone tablets, chisled with with hieroglyphics of the pyramids, the sphinx, and the classical Egyptian goddess Isis in the forms of a serpent and as winged woman.

Meanwhile the West Wing, his pride and joy, was Lettsom’s museum and library, which he filled with all sorts of wonders to indulge in his passion for science and medicine.

His library contained over 6,000 rocks, ores, shells, minerals and artefacts that spun his imagination. He would also use it

drowned. He invented a vaccination against small-pox and founded the British Medical Society in London in 1773.

Everyone in the profession would hope to at some point receive an invitation to Lettsom’s villa.

In his 1933 biography Lettsom, Johnston Abraham said the man had been “deeply obsessed” by his garden, green houses and his villa, on which he spent “as lavishly” on them as he did on his charities.

He kept spending and spending until by 1795 his estate had grown to ten acres. He then became renowned for his expansive gardens, and an inventory of his horticultural habits listed 31 peach trees, fourteen apple trees, 23 plum trees, 44 grape vines, ten apricot trees and 42 pear trees and 29 nectarines.

He also kept 64 beehives.

Looking out to the tiny village of Peckham was Lettsom’s Observatory, which he called The Temple of Sibyl – an ancient

His career saw him break ground in the medical world by championing new methods of reviving people who had nearly

Continuing with his love of classical history, Lettsom’s gardens were also home to stone statue of the three fates of Hygeia: priestesses of Greek mythology who spun, measured and cut the threads of life. But after 31 years the dream was over. Lettsom’s fortune ran dry, leaving him with no choice but to sell up and move on from Camberwell in 1810. His beloved villa was demolished in 1890, after chunks of his land was carved up for the old Camberwell railway line.

T

ucked away in a tiny alleyway just off Tooley Street is Bermondsey’s worst kept secret: a hidden micro-park packed with flowers, plants and books, writes Joey Millar...

Despite its name, Gibbon’s Rent is sadly lacking in primates but instead boasts colourful foliage, the rare scent of nature in central London and a ‘Little Library’ book exchange. It’s a place to escape the rush, read a book and smell the roses.

When Hattie and I arrived at the press launch of Carve, a new eatery

located at 116-120 Tooley Street, it quickly became clear our relaxing stroll had been a godsend.

Carve, which is officially opening today, is all about speed. It’s about good food, too, but crucially it’s about getting good food and getting it now. A mural on one of the stripped-back walls of the building reads “TAKE LUNCH BY THE HORNS”, while an electric board in the corner blinks “NO BULL, JUST MEAT”. This is not a place to nurse a coffee and watch the day slip away.

Carve has no till. It has no tables or waiting staff. It has no kooky mismatched furniture, no cheeky message scrawled on a chalkboard by the entrance and no #trendy social media presence.

What is does have is incredible food – and a lot of it.

Guests order and pay for their meals at electronic boards, choosing from a selection of healthy takeaway pots, ranging from chicken to salmon. They then make their way to ‘the circuit’, where their meal is already waiting

for collection . The owners are so confident of Carve’s potential serving speed, in fact, they told the News 600 people could be served every hour.

As for the food itself, Hattie and I attempted as many different portions as possible, putting our summer bodies on the line for journalistic integrity. While the breakfast option of sausages, scrambled egg and spinach posed something of a culinary challenge at 8pm, the others were delicious – particularly the salt beef, ‘top rump’ and tofu pots. Don't be

fooled by the quick service - this is not fast food as you know it.

As a breakfast and lunch option, Carve will be a welcome addition to London’s pantry – especially for those busy city types who can’t afford to queue behind someone paying in pennies or dawdling over an order. For everyone else, it will simply be a place to get great food quick.

With plans in place to introduce tables and waiting staff in the evenings, Carve may soon learn to mix pace with peace. For now, however, you can enjoy the best of

both worlds by grabbing a superfast Carve meal and enjoying it around the corner in Gibbon’s Rent. Just don’t forget your book.

After a troubled summer for the Black and Whites, where ground issues led to them not entering the FA Cup or FA Vase, things have finally fell into place for the fans owned outfit as they settle into life at St Paul’s Sports Ground on Salter Road.

A crowd of 180 saw the Fish return to their heartland, after twelve years of tenancy at Champion Hill, the home of Dulwich Hamlet, and whilst there was no goal action the club will have plenty to celebrate.

The club reformed in 2009, as a supporters owned entity, after Fisher Athletic was wound up in the high court.

Since then the club have existed on a shoestring budget in the Southern Counties East Football League as they battled to return to their home in the north of Southwark.

The demolition of Athletic’s old home of Surrey Docks Stadium led to the building of the new ground at nearby St Paul’s playing field and the chance to bed down some roots.

Fisher will now hope they can build a community club that has enough revenue streams to help the first team move forward on the pitch too.

The Black and Whites are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Bearsted FC, a game that starts at 3pm.

Clean sheet for Fisher season opener Fisher picked up a point in their first competitive game at their new home

A KADELL Daniel first half goal was not enough to ensure Dulwich Hamlet opened their season with three points on their travels to AFC Sudbury.

The 2-2 draw in Suffolk garnered a single point for the Champion Hill side despite the fact that a smartly taken free kick from Daniel gave them the lead at half time on Saturday.

The Pink and Blues fell behind after just two minutes at the weekend when Sam Clarke netted for the home side.

Kenny Beaney headed home the equaliser on 37 minutes at the The

Wardale Williams Stadium, and three minutes later Daniel banged home his dead ball effort to give Hamlet the lead.

Despite having the better of the second period Dulwich could not extend their lead and that proved costly when Luke Callander restored parity to the scoreline.

In fact in stoppage time Hamlet had keeper Preston Edwards to thank after his save ensured the Pink and Blues returned home with something for their hard work.

On Tuesday night Dulwich played their first home league game of the

season against Enfield Town and they came from behind to secure three points.

Ex-Hamlet man Billy Crook netted from the spot for the visitors on 27 minutes before Nyren Clunis equalised before the break. Dan Carr netted the winner just past the hour mark.

On Saturday Hamlet are once again at home, this time Leiston are the visitors, in a game that kicks off at 3pm.

They follow that up next Tuesday with an away league fixture against Harlow Town, a contest that commences at 7.45pm.

The Southwark side, who play under the Eltham Palace banner in the SCEFL First Division, were sitting bottom of the table after two defeats in two games but things took a turn for the better last Saturday.

The deadlock was broken at the weekend when Stansfeld’s Freddie Sansom was taken down in the box for a stonewall penalty.

Billy Jolley made no mistake in converting from twelve yards out. But the lead was short lived as Tom Pratt levelled for the visitors with a close range finish after some poor defending by the Bermondsey side.

SURREY STARS will not be taking part in the Kia Super League finals day after their 34 run defeat against Loughborough Lightning last week.

The women’s side needed to win their final game of the league section of the T20 tournament to have any hope of progressing, but instead they fell to a heavy defeat.

The Stars were always up against it after South African international Dane van Niekerk hit 91 as the home side posted an impressive score of 168/6 in their allotted overs.

The pick of the Surrey bowlers were seamer Marizanne Kapp who took one wicket for 23 runs in her fours overs and England left arm spinner Alex Hartley who had an identical return to Kapp.

In chasing down the score Surrey lost wickets at too regular an interval with only opener Tammy Beaumont, with a knock of 27 from 22 balls, getting a score of any note early on.

A later rearguard effort from Laura Marsh, who scored 41 off 24 balls, proved too little too late as Surrey fell to defeat and missed a top three spot that would have them through to finals day.

“George Snelling then breaks down in the warm up and this was compounded when striker Aaron Firth got stuck at work.

“This meant another re-jig of formation and also left us with limited options on the bench. But the boys showed a lot of character and fitness across the group looks to be slowly improving. With games coming thick and fast we have had no time to work with the players on the training pitch, but at the moment it is just a case of trying to get eleven fit players out there.”

Stansfeld still have another side, last season’s reserve team, who play in the Kent County Premier Division and they got their campaign under way last weekend.

DULWICH CRICKET Club all rounder Richard King was the star of the show for the second game in succession on Saturday, this time proving deadly with the ball rather than the bat.

Last week the News reported that King’s knock of 79 was critical in the clubs big win against Farnham in the Travelbag Surrey Championship.

Last Saturday King starred once again, this time with ball in hand, as he took six Chessington wickets for 29 runs as the Southwark side picked up a 51 run victory.

Dulwich batted first at the weekend and scored 196 for eight in their 50 overs with Henry Hazlewood top scoring with 63 runs off 116 balls.

The Dulwich top order, including King who only scored six runs, largely misfired with the exception of Hazlewood but the middle and lower order provided enough support for Dulwich to post a more than reasonable target.

In a role reversal Chessington’s top order put in a much better shift than their opposition and with the score on 106/4 it appeared the home side may chase down their target.

But King tore through the Chessington batting line up, supported by Kamran Munawar, Alexander Gledhill, Salaar Waqar and Ed Stolle who took a wicket apiece, to secure a big win for the Southwark side.

MILLWALL FORWARD Aiden O’Brien has twin personal aims this season – but he won’t be obsessing over achieving them ahead of team objectives.

O’Brien was born and raised in Islington but sees himself as Irish. His grandparents were born in Ireland and he has represented the country at U17, U19 and U21 level.

And the experience of O’Dowda gives him hope.

“He did well in that division but I did well in League One last season,” O’Brien said. “All I’ve got to do is keep doing what I’m doing and not think about that stuff.

“But it’s in the back of my mind. I know that one day I want to be there. I want to be in and around that environment and I want to score for my country at that level, not just in the U21s

as I have done.

“I want to do it in the senior team, that’s my aim. If I ever got to that stage in my career I’d be the happiest man alive.

“I want to get to 15 goals for Millwall and if I get there before the end of the season I’ll just push to 20. That’s what I’m looking to do.

“We all just want to add goals to the team but if we win the game that’s the main thing. No one really cares about anything else.”

Two of the goals O’Brien scored last season were against Sheffield United, following a hat-trick a month previously at Crewe when Millwall fans really began to sit up and take notice of his talent.

Both finishes at Bramall Lane showcased his ability: the first was a brilliant back-header into the top corner and he won it for an understrength Millwall side when he made a clever run on the blindside of a defender before poking home Shane Ferguson’s cross to the back post.

It’s not an accident that he finds himself in those positions. O’Brien says Neil Harris adjusts the tactical approach depending on who the opposition are, working on ways to exploit weaknesses while being conscious of counteracting their strengths.

The Blades are the visitors to The Den this weekend and like last year will be expected to challenge for promotion.

MILLWALL recovered from a madcap five minutes in the first half at Stadium MK to maintain their composure and their unbeaten start to the season.

The Lions had taken the lead in the 24th minute when Tony Craig’s header deflected off former Millwall midfielder Ed Upson and then Nicky Maynard before nestling in the back

of the net beyond David Martin.

Martin, the MK Dons goalkeeper and brother of Millwall defender Joe, was picking the ball out of the net again three minutes later, and this time it was a much purer strike. Aiden O’Brien spotted the run of David Worrall before picking him out with a neat chipped cross, and the former Southend winger finished with an emphatic volley for his first goal for the club.

If Millwall thought they were going to lay down a real marker for the season by comfortably subduing a side that spent last season in the Championship, it wasn’t long before that feeling was dashed.

MK Dons boss splashed out a clubrecord transfer fee on Kieran Agard last week and he immediately started to repay that faith when after Millwall failed to adequately clear the former Bristol City forward fired a left-footed

shot past Jordan Archer into the bottom corner.

And five minutes later the Dons were level and again it was an avoidable goal. Upson, enjoying an eventful afternoon, punted a ball forward that Archer hesitated to come and gather and Agard nodded home to cap a pulsating ten minutes of action.

Both sides could easily have won the fixture after the break.

O’Brien went close to getting his third goal in three games when he flashed a shot wide after Steve Morison and Lee Gregory had combined to set him up.

Martin then denied the same player in spectacular fashion when he tipped the forward’s long-range drive around the post.

Joe Walsh then cleared off the line from Jimmy Abdou before the bravery of Shane Ferguson at the

other end saved his side from falling behind. It looked like Maynard was about to give his side the lead but Ferguson slid in to clear before clattering into the post, the Northern Ireland international injuring his hip and having to be replaced with Joe Martin.

And Archer made up for his earlier indecision when he saved Brandon Thomas-Asante’s shot in injury time before getting down low to gather Daniel Powell’s effort after a Dons counterattack.

Millwall are a much stronger outfit this season and O’Brien hopes the outcome will be the same as in both fixtures between the clubs in 2015-16.

“It was a game that we were underdogs in. Sheffield United are a massive club, they’ve a massive fanbase,” O’Brien admitted.

“Things went well that day because I scored two goals and we won the game.

Anything can happen, each game is different, each opponent is different.

“We prepare for every game slightly differently. Hopefully we get a win on Saturday and we’ll be flying.

“We’re a strong side, as you can see.

We’re doing things the right way, we’re preparing properly.”

Emergency loan recruits George Saville (top) and Chris Taylor made big differences for Millwall last season

Boss banks on y o u t h New rules mean no emergency loans

NEIL HARRIS believes the philosophy he has implemented at Millwall since he took charge on a full-time basis will help mitigate any disadvantage the abolishment of the emergency loan window could have.

FIFA announced last season that it was changing the system that allowed clubs to recruit players outside of the two designated transfer windows.

Harris used the emergency loan periods to good effect last season when he signed George Saville in October and then Chris Taylor in March.

Both players played crucial roles at crucial stages of the season, Saville’s arrival coinciding with the start of a ninegame unbeaten run, and Taylor making up for the loss of another loanee, Jed Wallace, by scoring on his debut against Sheffield United and becoming a regular for the rest of the season.

Both emergency loans – as well as the recruitment of Wallace last January – filled a need in the team at a particular stage of the season.

That won’t be an option this season, meaning the current transfer window

takes on more significance.

That is one big change, but something that won’t change is Harris’ determination to maintain a core firstteam squad of 20 players.

Beyond those 20 there are youngsters such as Tom King, Kris Twardek, Kyron Farrell and Noah Chesmain who will be part of league match-day squads and who could get their chance in the EFL Trophy.

Harris gave Chesmain, Alfie Pavey and Jamie Philpot their first-team debuts and has helped develop Ben Thompson and Aiden O’Brien into top performers in League One, albeit it is too soon to make definitive judgements on those players given how relatively little time they’ve spent in the first team.

That emphasis on nurturing the academy products will continue, but the Lions boss admitted he is undecided whether getting rid of the emergency loan option is a sound idea.

“I can’t control it, it is what it is,” Harris said. “I’m torn down the middle. The majority of managers in our division are going to run with squads similar to ours, around 20 players.

“We’ve got cover in most positions but, at the same time, three or four injuries or illness or suspension is going to push

you, especially playing SaturdayTuesday-Saturday.

“We won’t carry a bigger squad because then you have unhappy players and the budget is affected.

“You should never look at short-term gain, but sometimes naturally you will do.

“The plus to it is that you run with a small squad and if you do get a couple of injuries, then you are forced to dip into your youth sides.

“That’s obviously the reason for doing it, we’re supposed to use home-grown players from our academies.

“But Millwall do that anyway. And I will use players that are ready.

“What you don’t want to do is rush players when they aren’t ready and it doesn’t quite work for them. There’s no bonus in that.”

Harris also has an eye on the broader issues. With fewer and fewer English players breaking into Premier League sides competing at the top end of the table and in European competitions, the national side has suffered, plunging to arguably its lowest point in its history with the 2-1 defeat to Iceland in Euro 2016.

Harris says something must be done to change the trend, but acknowledges that

Twardek represented Czech Republic, the country of his father’s birth, at underage level but recently filed for a one-time switch to the country he was born and grew up in.

The nineteen-year-old midfielder, who has yet to make his competitive first-team debut for Millwall, will fly out with the rest of the squad to Central America on August 28.

Twardek signed a one-year deal with Millwall in the summer and was an important member of Justin Skinner’s Elite Development squad last season as they finished second in Professional Development League 2.

the fact that Premier League clubs will earn more than £10 billion from TV rights deals over the next three seasons means the splurge on the world’s best players is unlikely to subside.

Harris said: “If in the long run we use our players more as a nation then we must see the reward of that all the way through – there’s no point just doing it in the lower reaches in League One or Two if you’re not going to force more homegrown players into teams in the Premier League, because that’s not going to benefit the national side.

“The FA, the Premier League, the governing bodies have to look at the bigger picture, it’s not just the lower leagues. While there’s still an influx of foreigners it doesn’t help us as a nation.

“But what the top teams can do is governed by TV revenue, obviously.

While that happens the national side is never going to be the best in the world.

We need our own players playing at the top level of the game to give them a chance to compete on the world stage.

“But everybody is eating off the top table. The lower leagues are the same.

We need the TV money that the Premier League pass down to sustain the modern game.

“How it changes, I don’t know.”

PAVEY MAKES BROM BOW

ALFIE PAVEY made his debut for Bromley on Tuesday night following confirmation earlier in the day of his loan switch to the National League side.

The only thing that was plunging after the opening two games was Millwall’s price to win League One. They jumped to outright favourites after two clean sheets and seven goals achieved with a swagger that suggested they were comfortable with that expectation.

Yes they conceded two goals in five minutes at MK Dons at the weekend, but if anything one would have thought that should have focused the defensive mindset against a Peterborough side with a vibrant, fast and technical forward line.

There was little to suggest that Millwall looked like a side due a hammering.

But that's exactly what happened.

It was well after 10pm when Neil Harris arrived in the press room and he was angrier than at any point since he took on this job.

He didn’t hold back and didn’t worry about sparing his players’ feelings as he labelled their performance “crap”.

He made a point of exempting Steve Morison and Lee Gregory but maybe that was only a default qualification – after all the ball was down at the other end of the pitch for most of the game, being zipped around rapidly between the Posh players as they ran amok for the second successive season at home against the Lions.

Harris admitted this performance and a result that could have been even worse could force him into a re-think over his transfer plans before the current window shuts.

This season there will be no chance to take remedial action after August 31, as there was last season when Harris signed George Saville in the emergency loan window to add more bite and composure in midfield.

Emergency loans are no more but it was clear on Tuesday night Millwall need another experienced midfielder.

Ben Thompson is too callow to figure out what to correct when things are going so drastically wrong. Jimmy Abdou is not in the team for his organisational or motivational skills, or his passing ability. Abdou is there to run and fill defensive gaps but on Tuesday night there were too many fires to put out and no one seemed to know in which direction to turn the hose.

A chronicle of the evening’s damage, then: Peterborough gave warning of their attacking intent by eschewing the one-man kick-off the new rules allow and went straight for the Lions’ jugular. There were 40 seconds on the clock when Marcus Maddison arrowed a shot from distance from the right that Jordan Archer nervously watched whizz over his crossbar.

only the darkening of a cloud when minutes after coming on for his competitive debut Shaun Hutchinson slumped to the turf with what looked like a reoccurrence of the hamstring injury he had seemingly recovered from.

“A complete disaster” was Harris’ verdict.

It was difficult to disagree.

Millwall were two goals down within seven minutes on Tuesday night and the game was as good as over when rampant Peterborough added a third in the 20th minute.

Grant McCann’s vibrant team seemed capable of grabbing more goals almost every time they attacked and were 5-0 ahead midway through the second half as Millwall completely fell apart.

Steve Morison got a goal back eleven minutes from time but most of the 649 away fans who had made the trip were already on the A1 on the way back to London grimly digesting what they had seen.

Harris said Peterborough’s lightning start was something his players should have been able to cope with, but admitted the result could have been worse.

“We knew they’d have a fast start after their disappointing result at the weekend at home,” Harris said. “We expected that, there was no problem, we had to get a foothold in the game.

“It was more after the first goal there was the problem. They got a piece of luck but we didn’t react.

“Even at 2-0 I wasn’t concerned. I thought we still had plenty of time, but it just didn’t materialise.

“Defensively I thought we were all over the shop, not just the back four but the midfield players. Basics that we do so well as a team, basics we’ve done so well probably since we came here last year, we didn’t do.

“We had three or four blocked on the line, we could have scored four or five goals ourselves. But we could have conceded more, so no complaints. I thought their movement and interchange was excellent.

“We’ve been so consistent and reliable but we just didn’t do that today, it was almost like people forgot their roles and responsibilities.

That’s my biggest gripe: that under pressure, on a bad night, some of my players couldn’t do the basics. That’s what upsets me.”

NEIL HARRIS had no intention of “sweeping under the carpet” the problems evident in Millwall’s 5-1 hammering at Peterborough on Tuesday night.

Harris slammed his players afterwards, calling their performance “crap” and saying he felt “angry” and “embarrassed” with the nature of the capitulation, the second season in a row they have conceded five goals at the

ABAX Stadium.

The Lions boss also hinted he was unhappy with interference from some of the players’ representatives, warning “I won’t accept agents ringing me making demands”.

Harris doesn’t have much time to work on the defensive weaknesses of his side after they conceded seven goals in two games in the space of four days, including two in the draw at MK Dons last Saturday.

However, he insisted when the players returned to training on Thursday morning the focus

would be fully on Sheffield United, who visit The Den at the weekend.

“It’s a game I’ll be watching back before I get into bed,” he said late on Tuesday night as the squad prepared to board their coach for the journey back to London. “It’s a game I’ll watch again in the morning.

“It’s not a game I’ll be sweeping under the carpet, there’s too much to learn from it.

“I have to learn about my players mentally as well as physically and technically.

There’s no papering over the

cracks. We weren’t good enough.

“We came up against a very, very good performance from Peterborough.

“There are going to be some things for players to look at, individually and collectively.

“But we move forward. We won’t dwell on it on Thursday, we won’t be coming in feeling sorry for ourselves. We’ll be bright and bubbly and be ready to prepare for Sheffield united.

“If I had to pick a game of football Saturday for our next league game, it would be Sheffield United at The Den.”

The Lions held talks with Archer over an improved deal before the start of the season after he enjoyed an excellent 2015-16 campaign when he kept 20 clean sheets.

Archer, 23, signed a two-year deal with Millwall after he had been released by Tottenham last summer.

He started the season as number two to David Forde but quickly asserted his claims to be first choice and took his chance when he made his competitive debut and kept a clean sheet at Scunthorpe.

Archer briefly lost his place when he was red-carded and subsequently suspended last December, but reclaimed it and was one of the most important players in the side as Millwall reached the play-off final.

He started this season with two successive clean sheets and Millwall are anxious to secure him on an extended contract.

“Jordan’s a young man with a bright future and we want to tie him to the club for a long time,” boss Neil Harris said.

“We had talks and made him an extremely good offer.

“It’s now down to Jordan whether he wants to commit his future to us.”

Meanwhile, Harris is still mulling over recruiting another goalkeeper.

He said: “I’m conscious of the fact we have two young goalkeepers and at some stage we might need a little bit more experience.

“Jordan’s got the number one jersey at the moment with Tom King on the bench. They’ve nailed down those positions by what they’ve done but you don’t stay where you are by what you’ve done in the past. You have to achieve to stay in my team.”
