“Velvet Petal was created to capture that moment of metamorphosis, that energy and atmosphere where the conditions are just right to become who you want to be,” says choreographer Fleur Darkin. “As a result, the show is both intimate and exciting. I was inspired reading Patti Smith's memoir about her and Robert Mapplethorpe's

time in New York in the early 1980s. It was such an exciting time and focusing on how they transformed as artists and became themselves.”

As a choreographer, Fleur wanted to capture the feeling of flux between confidence and shyness. “How tough girls and pretty boys present themselves to the world, changing themselves and their clothes, while never quite wearing the right outfit,” she says.

The performance is set to a dance-punk score, arranged

by Torben Lars Sylvest, which includes the music of LCD Soundsystem, Spoek Mathambo and Abul Mogard. “Our route into that place of self-expression is the music we play to ourselves, when nobody is listening,” reveals Fleur. “I listened to a lot of music in my bedroom and those artists became guides,” she says.

Then there’s the polaroids of Robert Mapplethorpe, which

the team behind Velvet Petal found made compelling viewing.

“We pored over images with different textures, purposes and theoretical underpinnings,” recalls Fleur. “The image of the young boy whose intertwined hands betray his submerged feelings about being photographed; the intimacy of the naked lovers on the bed – I wanted us to make images onstage and show that process of image construction.”

The result? The show holds a sense of intimacy in the theatre, where the audience witness the dancers embark on a journey of self-discovery. “It's raw and sexy, powerful yet intimate, and with a soundtrack that brings you to places you'll never want to leave,” says Fleur.

“We are living in tough times and a lot of our depression comes from hearing the news,” she points out. “I hope Velvet Petal inspires

audiences to reflect on their own metamorphoses as they are moved by the marvel of human growth. It’s a piece about listening to those private desires and connecting with our dreams.”

Singing pirates descend on Cutty Sark G

ilbert and Sullivan's comic opera The Pirates of Penzance comes to Cutty Sark this week as part of the ship's 150th birthday celebrations.

One of Gilbert and Sullivan's best loved operas, the story follows Frederic, an apprentice to a group of tender-hearted pirates who falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of a Major General.

The production is being staged by Merry Opera, a professional opera company whose aim is to make opera enjoyable for everyone – even those who have a tendency to fall asleep watching more traditional performances, writes Holly O'Mahony...

Greenwich is the last stop on Merry Opera’s current tour, which has seen the opera performed in Kent, Norfolk, Suffolk and Surrey.

Audiences in Greenwich have the additional novelty of watching the pirate-riddled opera on board the site-specific venue of a real ship.

“We'll be performing it in Cutty Sark's magnificent Sammy Ofer Gallery, underneath the suspended hull of the ship,” says Merry Opera producer Marie-Laure Hay. “It's the ideal performance space for a production like The Pirates of Penzance, which is full of nautical humour and piratical excitement,” she says. “It's impossible to forget you are only a couple of metres away from a hugely

important part of Britain's nautical history. Not to mention the fact Pirates was first performed in 1879, only ten years after Cutty Sark was built.”

While The Pirates of Penzance is regularly revived, the team behind Merry Opera have added their signature flare to the show.

“Our director John Ramster decided to stage this production in the costume of the time and with elements of pantomime about it,” reveals Matthew Quirk, producer and founder of Merry

Opera. “Oddly, the costumes of traditional productions have the pirates in 18th-century piratical gear, while everyone else is dressed in the style of the 1880s. We followed this idea and worked hard on the dialogue – which is often a weak point in operas.”

Merry Opera are committed to making opera more accessible to modern-day audiences.

The company produced their first show in 2007, became a charity in 2009 and have

spent the past 10 years touring their growing collection of productions around the UK and further afield. “Underneath the convoluted and apparently daft plots of operas, the stories and emotions are timeless and compelling,” points out Matthew. “Add to that the glorious music and you have a recipe that grips audiences and can even touch on relevant issues of the day,” he says.

Have any additional considerations been taken

into account in order to stage Pirates on an actual ship, and have the team had to adapt the show at all to make it work on Cutty Sark? “The staging is tricky. It’s a job of finding the right sightlines, working out how to deal with the slightly weird acoustics (as the sound bounces off the copper of the ship's hull), and fitting the set and style into a place that is not a normal theatre,” says Matthew. “But the set is designed to fit into

“Doubtless we will work the staging out as we rehearse [at Cutty Sark] and enjoy the various ad libs and unexpected

moments that pop up during the performances,” he says.

“Add to all that the very nature of the venue itself – a dry dock underneath the keel of a sailing clipper – and we hope that audiences will have a really special night out.”

Full steam ahead for new visitor train at Crossness pumping station A

team of volunteers at Crossness have taken on the ambitious project of creating a new build, narrow gauge railway next to Crossness Pumping Station in Abbey Wood.

The Royal Arsenal Narrow Gauge (RANG) Railway will operate as a visitor attraction, transporting guests from the carpark to the museum’s Beam Engine House, writes Holly O'Mahony...

Plans for RANG Railway were first formed in 2011, following a Think Tank session on ways to enhance the Crossness Pumping Station museum. On March 4 2019, the team exceeded their crowdfunding target of £12,500 – needed to purchase rail track material – raising a total of £13,386.

Between a major input from a private foundation trust, sizable pledges and support from a further 119 contributors, the team have raised the funds needed to build the railway they envisioned. The new locomotive should be fully operational by 2020.

“The desire for a railway came

after the off-site car park was adopted and it was seen as a way to heighten the ‘Cathedral on the Marsh’ visitor experience,” explains RANG Railway team lead Robin Parkinson. “The walk from the car park can be a bit of a leg stretch for some visitors. We [plan to] build 700 metres of track from the front gate and operate a novel ride to the museum.”

The new build narrow gauge railway will be the first of its kind to operate south of the Thames and inside the M25 for 80 years.

“It revives the legacy of the original 1860 contractors railway, provide[s] visitor museum transportation and [is] a valuable educational resource developed around an exciting programme of learning activities for both primary and secondary school visits.”

It has taken the dedication and passion of 12 volunteers to put plans for the RANG Railway into motion. The team at hand is made up of “railway nerds” rather than trainspotters, clarifies Robin. “[We’re] pensioners fulfilling a dream of Victorian engineers, re-building a railway line on the

foundations of a railway built 159 years ago," he says.

“We are part of the Crossness Team, the volunteers who restored one of the largest rotative beam steam engines in the world,” explains Robin. The project was started in 1987 and only saw the steam train up and running in 2003.

RANG Railway will not be a steam train, though, but will run on Diesel and hydraulic technology.

“Some might say we are ‘a mad team of old senior citizens’ volunteering four days per week – including Sundays – with a wide skill base [and] commitment to seeing Crossness Engines Trust prosper,” says Robin. “We [also] have the hands-on satisfaction of seeing our railway grow [and] enjoying good camaraderie.”

The locomotive being restored for the RANG Railway is a SevernLamb diesel locomotive by the name of Busy Basil, which the team acquired in 2018 along with a rake of carriages that were found resting at a narrow gauge railway in Lancashire. Built by Severn-Lamb Ltd. in 1985 for the Great Stokeon-Trent Exhibition, Busy Basil is

the only survivor of four complete sets that were built for the festival.

As such, as well as providing Crossness Pumping Station with new visitor transportation, RANG Railway is ‘returning to life’ one of the last remaining train sets built for the well-known 86 Stoke-on-Trent Garden Festival.

On the comprehensive crowdfunding page for RANG Railway, which features a short video on the project a well as a written description of the team’s endeavours, the exact pieces of equipment were also listed along with how much each would cost, in a bid to clarify to contributors where their money would be spent.

These included: ‘£20 for Twelve NG sleeper screws’; ‘£60 for one meter of completed rail track’ and ‘£1200 for one set of points/turnouts’ – which was the most expensive item detailed on the list.

Crossness Pumping Station opened in 1865 as a sanitation engineering concept designed in the 1860’s by Sir Joseph Bazalgette. It was fundamental in helping clear cholera from London after the ‘Great Stink’ of 1858.

The site became the forerunner of major sewage works which was later adopted throughout England.

“Crossness would never have been built without a temporary contractors railway from Plumstead to Crossness Pier,” points out Robin.

Robin and his team at Crossness have already laid the engine shed and yard tracks, acquired five sets of points, and purchased start-up materials for RANG Railway. The money raised through crowdfunding will help the team build a 700m track to get the locomotive moving. In addition to the money raised, the team received from a £29,800 grant from Enovert Community Trust for rolling stock purchase and restoration, building works, and track ballast.

Next on the agenda is another crowdfunding appeal aiming to raise £10,000 to complete the two stations and ticket office.

A musical journey from darkness into light On Saturday March 23, the Thomas Tallis Society Choir (TTS) is presenting Darkness into Light, a musical journey ‘from the day’s end into the promise a new day brings’ at St Alfege Church in Greenwich.

Eamonn Dougan who, in addition to his role with TTS, is associate conductor of renowned choir The Sixteen and director of vocal ensemble Britten Sinfonia Voices.

TTS is joined by the pianist YoonSeok Shin, who will be playing works by Beethoven, Chopin and Satie.

Over the course of the Darkness into Light concert, audiences will hear the works of Tallis, Byrd, Sheppard, Elgar, Rheinberger, MacMillan, Whitacre and Roth.

The concert also includes a performance of Gabriel Jackson’s ‘Am Abend’, the last work of Austrian poet Georg Trakl. The

poem’s title refers to the town where Trakl served as a medical officer in the First World War. The piece was commissioned

by Sospiri to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914 and was first performed by the BBC Singers in February 2014.

n November 2018, celebrated figures in the music industry and fans of Joni Mitchell clubbed together to celebrate the legendary singersongwriter’s 75th birthday with a tribute concert.

The event was held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at L.A.’s the Music Center and was a two-night affair, with performances taking place for two-and-a-half hours each night. The parade of musicians who took to the stage to play covers of the Canadian singer’s songs and pay tribute to her talent included those who have known her for years, like Graham Nash and James Taylor, and younger musical talent influenced by her music such as Norah Jones, writes Holly O'Mahony...

While the two-night concert was completely sold out, thankfully it was recorded. This Thursday evening, March 21, Greenwich Picturehouse is screening the recording of the concert – Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration – offering its own audience a chance to get closer to the soulful and heartfelt tribute event. The screening also includes behindthe-scenes interviews and

Celebrate Joni Mitchell's Birthday footage of the moment Mitchell herself made a rare public appearance.

Mitchell is known for creating music that draws on folk, rock, pop and jazz styles, and for writing songs that reflect on environmental and social issues as well as her own personal feelings. Over the course of her career, Mitchell has received a host of prestigious awards – including eight Grammys – and has been described by Rolling Stone as “one of the greatest songwriters ever”. Her most popular songs including ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ and ‘Woodstock’ (both released in 1970) helped define an era in music, while her

1971 album Blue is frequently cited as one of the greatest of all time. Her music continues to influence a number contemporary artists – Taylor Swift, Ellie Goulding and Katy Perry among them.

In 2015, Mitchell suffered a brain aneurysm, after which she was required to undergo physical therapy to learn to walk again, and since then, has made very few public appearances.

While her recent health battles prevented Mitchell performing at her tribute concert, the singer did make an appearance on the second night to blow out her birthday candles.

Julie Miller reported: “The moment that Joni Mitchell entered the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday evening – a rare public appearance for the influential singer-songwriter on her 75th birthday – the entire theater full of her friends and fans leapt to their feet for a ‘Happy Birthday’ serenade.”

While Rolling Stone journalist Steven H. Horowitz said: “The star power was world-class.

I’ve been there. I am there. Let’s be brave.’...She has given us heavenly inspiration when heaven is in short supply.”

Help little Rosie walk unaided for the first time

Rosie was born 8 weeks premature. At the age of one she was diagnosed with spastic diplegia, cerebral palsy (CP).

This means that Rosie finds simple things to you and I, like balancing, walking or sitting straight very difficult due to the high spasticity in her lower limbs. She is in pain and discomfort most of the time, bedtime consists of a lot of "mummy can you massage my legs please" requests before she falls asleep.

In order for little Rosie to live a painfree life and more mobility, she needs to undergo a surgical procedure known as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) on the lower part of her spinal cord. Unfortunately, Rosie doesn’t meet the NICE funding criteria to have this life-changing surgery under the NHS, namely due to a arbitary criteria that has no baring on the success of the surgery. It is a costly procedure, meaning we have to come up with £50,000 to cover the surgery and two years of intensive rehabilitation.

Despite her condition, Rosie is an incredibly curious and active 5yr old.

Players edge Upbeats in swim to promote fundraising walk on 13 April F our Charlton Athletic players took on four Charlton Upbeats in a swimming race on Tuesday 5 March, to raise awareness about the upcoming Upbeats Walk taking place on Saturday 13 April.

First-teamers Chris Solly, Jake Forster-Caskey, Dillon Phillips and Josh Cullen took on Billy Birchmore, Jack Lyons, Joe Peciuch and James Bowers as the Upbeats looked to retain their title from last year.

Billy holds 11 world Down’s syndrome swimming records and 15 European records.

This year, the players edged the Upbeats in a competitive race, which attracted a crowd at David Lloyd Sidcup.

Managed by Charlton Captain Jason Pearce, the Upbeats narrowly fell short of defending the trophy they won last year.

After the race, however, Billy took on Dillon Phillips in a one-to-one race and beat the Charlton shotstopper with ease over two lengths.

Robert Lee, Simon Webster and Bob Bolder have all confirmed that they will be attending this year’s Upbeats Walk.

The nine-mile walk, which is

taking place ahead of Charlton’s game against Luton Town, will start off at the club’s Sparrows Lane training groundand finish at The Valley in time for kick-off.

The Upbeats programme is entirely funded by voluntary contributions. The programme is for adults and children with Down's syndrome.

A report produced by CACT found that 93% of parents feel more confident and aspirational in relation to their son or daughter’s life since they started coming to the

Upbeats. 100% of parents said they would recommend the Charlton Upbeats to any family that has children with Down’s syndrome.

Upon attending the walk, Robert Lee said: “I think it’s a great cause and fantastic that football clubs are getting involved with the community in helping to provide opportunities for young people with disabilities.

“When Keith Peacock contacted me to ask if I would be interested in doing the Upbeats

Walk I was more than happy to be involved.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Quilter Street] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER)

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames water who need to carry out Manhole cover replacement.

2. The Order will come into operation on 21st March 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take one week. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Eastcombe Avenue at the junction of Bramshot Avenue.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Bramshot Avenue, Mayhill Road, Charlton Road and vice versa.

Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

2. The Order will come into operation on the 23rd March 2019 with back up dates of the 30th March 2019 and the 6th April 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 1 day. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Quilter Street and Speranza Street between 2 Speranza Street and the junction of Quilter Street and Plumstead High Street.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Plumstead High Street, Riverdale Road, Speranza Street and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Grangehill Place.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Grangehill Road, Westmount Road & Vice Versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
