Despite dealing with some heavy themes, Glory is fast, funny and visually thrilling. Volunteer-run community cinema, Deptford Cinema, continues its run of director seasons with a John Carpenter retrospective. Screening his 1982 masterpiece the Thing, Deptford Cinema is honouring the master of cult cinema by bringing his films back to the big screen. WHY WAS THE BEST OF WHAM SHOW PUT TOGETHER? To celebrate the life and music of George Michael and Wham.

We wanted to show George in his prime years and celebrate his beginnings with Wham: four friends who shook up the music industry and broke millions of hearts all over the world. It’s been just over 30 years since Wham performed their final concert together at Wembley and it’s been way too long to be away from their amazing fans so we hope to bring that feeling back to everyone.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WHAM TRACK TO PERFORM? I know it sounds corny but they’re all such amazing songs and the reaction from the crowd for each and every one of them is incredible and never fails to blow me away!

But if I had to choose, I would have to say ‘Edge Of Heaven’, it’s such a crowd pleaser with a great bit of audience participation.

WHAT CAN AN AUDIENCE EXPECT FROM ATTENDING THE BEST OF WHAM? An evening of nostalgia where they’ll be transported back to the glory days of the 1980s. Expect to be singing, dancing and clapping your hands from the very first song to the last. It’s such an incredible, feel good show you won’t be disappointed!

HOW DID YOU END UP BEING PART OF THE SHOW? Being a performer, you have to audition for roles and my agent was contacted to see if I’d like to go in to audition and meet the team. Luckily, being a massive Wham and George Michael fan I already knew all of the material and thankfully I was chosen to take on the role of George!

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH THE SHOW? I started rehearsals for the Best of Wham in June 2018 but my mother would tell you that I’ve been preparing for this role all my life! During rehearsals my biggest aim was to get the instantly recognisable physicality and moves of George, obviously Wham had their trademark dance routines…

I thought I’d hung up my dancing shoes a long time ago!

Tour. It was an incredible night that I didn’t want to end. In fact, we thought it might not end as he sang Freedom ‘90 three times as they were filming for the DVD. Our Best of Wham concerts try to capture the incredible live vocals as well as the fun and high energy performances of George and Andrew.

But performing to 10,000 people at Rewind festival has to be one of the best experiences of my life.

Also, topping the bill with Jason Donovan and Chesney Hawkes on the Throwback to The 80s Floating Festivals Cruise was a once in a lifetime moment as I’d grown up listening to these guys.

Painted Hall to reopen on 23rd March T

he Old Royal Naval College’s Painted Hall reopens to the public on Saturday 23 March, promising a fanfare of family entertainment and activity, writes Laura Burgoine...

Costumed historical characters will be interacting with visitors while Trinity Laban musicians entertain guests with a piano and harp recital. Amber Markets is trading in the grounds and the Old Brewery and other partners also have planned activities.

The UK’s answer to the Sistine Chapel, the Painted Hall is a masterpiece of English baroque art and has undergone a two year conservation project, bringing the interior back to life. The £8.5 million conservation project, supported by a £3.1-million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), has reversed years of decay and conserved the Painted Hall for generations to come. Between 2017 and 2018 an accessible observation deck gave over 80,000 visitors the opportunity to observe the conservators at work.

Its reopening is part of a major transformation project by Hugh Broughton Architects that will also see the reopening and restoration of the King William Undercroft beneath the Painted Hall, which will now house a new café, shop and interpretation gallery, The Sackler Gallery.

conservation is “sensational”.

“The results have even surprised the team who already knew it would be spectacular,” Angela told the Weekender. “It was nerve wracking for them and took six weeks to take the scaffolding out but it looks stunning.”

The ground-breaking project to clean and conserve the paintings started in 2016. It was one of the largest open access conservation projects in Europe. As the painted surfaces were cleaned, new details were uncovered that revealed how Thornhill planned and executed his vast work.

Shadows of corrected details appeared behind later paint layers and large areas of beautifully detailed history painting emerged from behind dirt and decay. As many as 30 signatures from previous ‘restorers’ were studied at close quarters, including one indelicately placed on the bosom of Mary II, revealing 300 years of almost continuous cleaning.

The reopening of the Painted Hall sees the introduction of a new visitor experience at the Old Royal Naval College. Visitors can take a guided or self-guided tour of the extensive site, setting off from the newly refreshed Visitor Centre and access into the Painted Hall. The tour will take in all aspects of Wren’s riverside masterpiece including the famous Water Gate, Grand Square and the Chapel, and includes access into the Skittle

Greenwich Park's allaccess playground T

he Royal Parks is starting work on building a maritime themed £350,000 ‘inclusive’ playground in Greenwich Park. Construction is due to begin this month with the playground expected to be ready by June, thanks to a £315,000 donation from The London Marathon Charitable Trust, writes Laura Burgoine...

The Trust is also funding a play co-ordinator for three years, to help children who are not able to get outdoors and play, in partnership with London Play. The remaining cost is being funded by The Royal Parks, the charity which manages Greenwich Park.

There has been a playground located in the North East corner of Greenwich Park since the Second World War, but following decades of play from thousands of children, the much-loved facility needs modernising. The Royal Parks has worked closely with a number of parent groups including Greenwich Parent Voice, a group of parents who all have children with special educational needs or a disability, in order to ensure the playground layout is as inclusive as possible for children of all ages and abilities.

The playground is maritime themed, reflecting the nautical roots of the World Heritage Site, and features a basket swing, roundabout, and plenty of sand and water play. Play elements are positioned both at ground level and in raised channels of varying height, in order to allow disabled and able-bodied children to play together.

Vivien Davies, community group organiser, dog lover and full-time carer, lives in Greenwich with her husband, her teenage son, her young daughter who has complex needs, and a very lively Labrador. “Greenwich Park is such a big part of our lives. We explore it together as a family. It’s a great escape from our pressurised, urban lives,” Vivien said.

“Being able to use a play space that is accessible is essential. It means our daughter

The playground is just one of a series of major improvements scheduled for the park through ‘Greenwich Park Revealed’ - a multi-million-pound project to protect and enhance Greenwich Park’s heritage and natural landscape for future generations. The project will

restore the park’s landscape heritage; improve biodiversity; generate opportunities for local communities through volunteering, events and a new Learning Centre; and improve visitor facilities through a mobility scheme, better play spaces, cafes and toilets.

Manager of Greenwich Park, Graham Dear, said: “This exciting new play space will give

all children a chance to have fun with their friends, while exploring and discovering nature, in a historical setting.”

“We’re also hosting a series of broader public engagement events where we’re inviting all locals and regular park visitors to come and share their views on our proposals, to help us shape the park’s future.”

Additionally, the Royal

Parks is working closely with the community to develop a bid for a £4.8m National Lottery grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund to deliver Greenwich Park Revealed. The bid will be submitted in August 2019.

History Mary Mills

The area we now call the 'Greenwich Peninsula’ is filling up with everything that is new and fresh and modern.

There are not just lots of new flats plus the Dome but a community is emerging with exciting projects and lots of ideas. There is, for instance, a very active arts centre in the NOW Gallery, the gardening centre on the Jetty, the longer established Ecology Centre, and much, much more. It’s been a lot of hard work to change the area – because, quite honestly, it wasn’t always as nice as all that.

It was until quite recently known as Greenwich Marsh. Until about 1840 it was just marshy fields, ditches and reeds – except of course for the big Government gunpowder store which stood near where Enderby's is now until the 1790s. Pieter van der Merwe wrote an excellent article in the last Greenwich Society newsletter about the gibbeted pirates on the riverside in the 18th century – so I think we can say it was a beautiful marshland area with lots of wildlife and a few rotting corpses.

In 1871 a man called Edward Ballard was commissioned to investigate bad smells along the riverside between Greenwich and Erith. He was a doctor who lived in Islington and became Medical Officer of Health for the Local Government Board. In his investigations into bad smells on the Thames he said that he had had complaints from the Commandant and the Medical Officer at the garrison in Woolwich – some distance from Greenwich of course, but smells tend to spread. There were two offensive works on the Peninsula, and several others in the immediate area.

Ballard visited both the relevant works on the Peninsula in 1870 one was the Mockford Ordnance Manure Works. That had been established in 1870 and was on the riverside in the area where the Dome stands now. He said that stored on site was about 250 tons of waste from cloth manufacture – shoddy. There was also over 5,000 tons of guano - that’s bird droppings collected from sea bird nesting areas. He reported ‘the arrangements for preventing the escape of offensive effluvia are very imperfect’.

The other works was the older established Hills Manure and Vitriol Works. This was on the riverside adjacent to the Pilot Pub and Frank Hills had opened this works in the early 1840s. Like Mockford’s they stored waste material from cloth manufacture as well as waste leather, bones and bone ash, refuse from sugar bakeries, coprolites, and mineral phosphates and - of course - more bird

Kicking up a right stink! droppings. Ballard did not add that they also processed vast amounts of waste materials from inner city gas works. He said the works had ‘no means for preventing the escape of offensive effluvia into the atmosphere.’

However, the two works on Greenwich marsh were nothing compared to what was on the other side of the river! On the north bank, directly opposite where the Millennium Village now stands, were seven works.

Four of them - Gibbs' Oil of Vitriol and Manure Works, Odham's Oil of Vitriol and Manure Works. Farmer's Oil of Vitriol and Manure Works, and Shroeder and Company's Oil of Vitriol and Manure Works – all stored the same mix of waste materials for making manure as Mockford and Hills. Ballard was very critical of them: ‘acid fumes were escaping a very powerful pungent odour pervaded the works … an empyreumatic odour .... no means whatever are in use to intercept these effluvia’. The others - Duncan's Sugar Bakery and Walmsley’s Malt Roasting Works were not so bad.

There were of course many other works further down river which Ballard visited. However the worst smells were from the skutch works in Erith – and though Erith is a long way from the Greenwich Peninsula the smells from there pervaded the

barracks in Woolwich. Ballard said “the putrid sickening odour from them travels for many miles”. This is not the place to discuss skutch but it involved the manufacture of glue.

I suspect people think that the huge gasworks on the Peninsula was a cause of offensive smells but from the start it was a super efficient modern works conscious of the need to take care. However before the gas works was built the local authority in Greenwich asked them to build the smelliest part of the works, the purifying plant, at the north end of the site on Blackwall Point - where the Dome is now - so that smells were kept as far away from Greenwich as possible while wafting over the north bank of the river. At an enquiry into the building of the gas works there were submissions from neighbouring businesses.

One was from the owners of a big dry dock who said smells from the gas works would damage the ‘high-class paint work’ they were doing, and another from another manure works, the Biphosphated Guano Company. The gas works were told they had to buy up these businesses.

In the 1930s The United Lampblack Works was in the centre of the Peninsula and residents took an action out against them. A Mr. Webb gave evidence.

He had a 'dining rooms' at 159 Tunnel Avenue and complained of black specks coming from the factory. He described how he made a steak pudding and found it full of specks which looked like currants.

Most people who have lived in the area for more than 10 years will remember the smells from the sugar refinery which stood on Morden Wharf. Earlier the Mollassine factory had been nearby where pet food was made from molasses based mixture. The smell was known all along the river.

Then there was the glucose refinery. They had begun as Tunnel Glucose and then became Amylum and there was an adjacent distillery.

Many people locally actually liked the smell which, they said, ‘reminds me of home’ while others found it revolting. Individual reactions to smell can be very different and it is also difficult to measure. I used to see a lot of reports on the efforts to sort all this out – plus the heroic efforts of the Greenwich Environmental Health Team. The factory was eventually taken over

by Tate and Lyle, who sold it to Syriol - who closed it down. The unannounced demolition of the factory is another story.

With the closing of the refinery nasty smells on the Peninsula seem to have disappeared. It’s a bright and shiny world on

the Peninsula now with most things new. No one wants bad smells near people’s homes – or anywhere really. Oh - and one day the traffic on the Tunnel Approach will get sorted.

CACT celebrates International Women’s Day

C

harlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) marked International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March by highlighting some of the inspirational women it works with across a number of its programmes.

Over a week-long period leading up to International Women’s Day, CACT highlighted one woman per day and told their inspirational stories on social media.

On day one, CACT spoke to Laura Barton, who recovered from psychosis thanks to its award-winning early intervention in psychosis scheme.

Laura said: “My biggest

achievement is getting more confident within myself, professionally and personally.

“I can’t thank CACT enough for the help they have given me.”

CACT also picked out key women from its other six strands, including 11-year-old Isobel from Premier League Girls, a programme CACT delivers on behalf of the Premier League.

Isobel loves playing football with her friends, and has gained confidence from it. She said: “I used to want to go into the football cage and play football all the time but I’d be embarrassed that the boys would laugh at me or tell me to go away because I’m a girl. But I

just stood up for myself, went in there and played.

“Football just makes me feel free…taking part and being in a team is really fun. It’s also fun that you can have opportunities to play professionally.”

Women and girls from all seven of CACT’s strands spoke about the impact that engaging with the organisation has had on their lives.

On International Women’s Day itself, CACT published a video collating all their stories and showcasing the range of CACT’s projects. Other participants included young people from Young Greenwich, the youth service CACT delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough

of Greenwich, and the National Citizen Service programme it runs.

Shade Thompson, CACT’s Marketing & Outreach Officer (Young Greenwich), who coordinated the project, said: “As well as the fantastic projects CACT does around football, I wanted to highlight the other great programmes it runs outside of sport and the impact it has in the community.

“Speaking to each woman was incredible, especially hearing their journeys with us and the achievements they have made in their own lives.”
