new book celebrates the 50th anniversary of Thamesmead, an area built on the Erith marshes in the ‘60s that 30,000 people now call home, writes Laura Burgoine...

The Town of Tomorrow: 50 Years of Thamesmead is a love story to the area, featuring new and archive photographs, memories from residents, and a historical essay.

Thamesmead is renowned for its experimental design and rough concrete modern terraces and blocks of flats, which provided the backdrop for Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The architecture evolved; by the 1980s the town had expanded with hundreds of new, more conventional, red brick homes, followed in the 1990s by blocks of private flats in what had

previously been a mainly council-run town. Thamesmead has been run by numerous bodies over the years, and the latest, Peabody, is embarking on an ambitious regeneration plan. The original modernist areas will be redesigned and the disparate elements of the town will be connected to make it fit for both the residents of today and tomorrow.

father and son art exhibition in Blackheath spans six decades of Greenwich’s history, writes Laura Burgoine...

Christopher and Alexander Pemberton’s paintings and drawings give a visual account of Greenwich and sites in South London over nearly 60 years. Christopher Pemberton settled with his family in the Royal Borough from 19591983 and painted there while teaching at Camberwell School of Art. Christopher’s son Alexander Pemberton moved back to Greenwich in 1993.

Christopher’s early paintings show scenes in the Blackheath Standard area, including Greenwich Park and Old Dover Road before the A102 cut through the neighbourhood.

Alexander, who has a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, has been painting in the area since ‘93.

“An aim of this exhibition is to contrast my father's record of that time with my own record of

the present,” Alexander said.

“Christopher Pemberton's early work has an atmosphere of sober grittiness, muted colour, and everyday life lovingly presented. As time went on, the palette lightened and he became quite daring and experimental with colour.”

Christopher only ever worked from real life. “He had to, it was a compulsion and often a source of frustration and real struggle,” Alexander continued. “His sustained effort to create something real did arrive at a kind of beauty - a 'poetic' beauty in his struggle to get at the truth.”

As a teenager, Alexander painted beside his father while on holidays.

“I remember being impressed by his strange excursions into colour and this is probably the side of his work that I related to best,” he said. “I went to Chelsea school of Art from 1978-81 and worked from observation as he had but I was influenced by a later generation of teachers.”

After living in Spain, Mexico, and then the East End of London, Alexander returned to Greenwich in ’93. “The river has become my main subject matter,” he said. “I work on a series of views which are increasingly a record of the lost industrial shorelines and the new high-rise developments.”

“Like my father, I find a subject with potential and work there over time, sometimes for years, on different versions. The river compels me as a subject; an aim of my work is to define and organise what is fluid and intangible.”

A good place to start would be to imagine that you are 80 years old and looking back over your long life, what would you want this life to look like? This simple exercise introduces you to the idea of thinking ‘bigger

picture’. Most of us spend our time dealing with what is going on in our lives at the present moment and barely stop to take a step back and honestly look at the life we are creating for ourselves. It’s a bit like being in a forest with the trees all so close that you can’t see clearly, neither the pathway you’re on nor the ones leading off into the distance. The secret here is to soar like a bird above the forest, looking down and observe the pathways with a newfound clarity. This is bigger picture thinking, which is the secret to discovering what you really want from life.

The first step towards figuring out what we want from life is to understand that we have a choice as to whether we want to live a reactive or a proactive life. What is the difference you may well ask?

Well, a reactive life is one that most people are currently living.

It’s one where you are pushed and pulled around by people and situations, always responding and reacting to what is going on.

Visually I see this as the silver ball on a pinball table that is propelled from one flipper to the next; we are always in motion, not making choices but simple reacting to what

is going on around us. Now being proactive is about thinking bigger picture, as I mentioned earlier, and making decisions about how you want your life to be, essentially taking charge. As a coach I have witnessed the positive and profound effect that switching your thinking, from reactive to proactive, has on people’s lives, enabling a person to start creating the life they want as opposed to the life that is simply happening to them.

When it comes to figuring out what you really want, the secret lies in rediscovering what makes your heart sing. What I mean by this is what inspires you? What excites you? What can you spend hours doing but in actuality you’ve lost all track of time because you are so absorbed by it? So much of our focus today is on what we are meant to be or should be doing, that we forget about all the ‘good stuff’ that life has to offer.

When was the last time that you did something purely for the sheer enjoyment of it? When did you last feel really good?

All the latest research had proven that taking time out to pursue inspirational and life affirming enjoyment is crucial to our psychological and emotional wellbeing. However in our busy lives it’s the one thing that gets pushed aside and not given the important consideration it is due.

What I recommend to my coaching

clients is to schedule in one thing a week that brings you joy. The reason I insist that my clients schedule it in, is precisely because otherwise it’s the one thing that will always be squeezed out and ultimately not happen. Have you noticed how good we are at scheduling in all our obligations, work, family, other people’s social events, so where is that precious time set aside for us? If you don’t prioritise it, it will never happen.

One thing I can promise you is the payback you get from ensuring that you do the ‘good stuff’ is enormous, having a positive effect on your quality of life, happiness levels and you will generally find yourself so much better equipped to deal with life’s challenges!

The question here is what do you believe is a successful life? Is it professional success, personal success, as in family and relationships, or quality of life? Or potentially all three? When people are asked what they most want from life the most popular answer is ‘to be happy’ yet how many of us actually prioritise feeling good?

How about making the choice to become proactive and make time for the ‘good stuff' as the first step towards creating a much deserved, fulfilling life for yourself. If not now, then when?

Explore the Otherworld, where creatures haunt and protect the Heath I

n 1859 the Greenwich Natural History Society made a record of fauna on Blackheath.

The animal species recorded included Natterjack toads, hares, common lizards, bats, quail, ring ouzel and nightingales. Today the bats are the only regular inhabitants on that list.

‘Otherworld’ an exhibition by award-winning London artist Victoria Rance brings these longlost creatures back to the heath for a mystical sculpture exhibition that combines folklore, fairies, animal spirts and environmental history. The works look at the connections between humans, animals and nature through tiny detailed pewter characters set in tableaux scenes.

Responding to the location and the time of the mad March hare, Rance is also showing a new series of talismanic sculptures based on The Three Hares, an ancient archetypal symbol.

She sees the motif as a way of honouring our precious declining wildlife, as well as being a helpful counter to current world conflict.

She writes: “For Otherworld I have discovered (in my dreams and imagination) some creatures whose job it is to haunt and protect the Heath through fear or favour.”

Our poor doomed gas holder Mary Mills

I

thought it was about time I wrote something about our poor doomed East Greenwich Gas holder.

The campaign and petition to try and stop demolition of the holder has had far greater public support than we expected and shows how much people value its dramatic presence on the Greenwich Peninsula.

All over London gas holders are being demolished at a shocking rate - apparently the owners have been ‘tasked’ by their regulatory body to dismantle them all by 2029.

A few have been ‘listed’ and will remain, one of which is the big holder in the Old Kent Road.

South Metropolitan’s Chair, and the man who made all the decisions was George Livesey – clever and unconventional - but this article is about gasholders not about all the other things that Livesey did. He designed a series of gas holders for the company’s Old Kent Road works, each more technologically advanced than the last. Three of these holders still stood until recently but I understand that only the very large holder, No.13, is going to stay, because it is listed. That holder was built in 1879 and is technically a departure to what had gone before. It was built on a revolutionary ‘cylindrical shell principle’ which is very simple and very strong. It is said that this ‘set a new bench-mark in gas holder design’ also that this was ‘Concorde’ while other holders were ‘bi-planes’.

Back to East Greenwich. Our great gas holder was one of two built in the 1880s by the South Metropolitan Gas Company for their new super works in Greenwich. It followed the same design ideas as the No.13 holder at Old Kent Road and developed them. The Gas Company needed to expand and modernise away from their Old Kent Road base where they had been since the 1830s. East Greenwich was then marsh land and the new gas works was sited at its northern end, much of which was undeveloped. I do not think that another Gas Works has been built in London since East Greenwich and it therefore remains the most modern works ever built here. It embodied the highest possible standards of the latest of absolutely everything – and crucially it was planned from the start whereas older works had usually just ‘grown’ as and when

necessary. South Met. was not a company to do things by halves.

No.1. gas holder which still stands (well just about) was the first of two holders and it was soon joined by another even bigger holder.

It was described at the time as ‘a mountain of iron against the sky’. Together they were said to be the biggest concentration of gas storage in the world. There are good economic reasons for these huge sizes and the company could produce figures to prove the savings through storage like this.

So East Greenwich No.1. was a development of his new ideas on holder design. There is also a good reason why it stands so high.

Gas holders usually stand above an underground tank of water but at East Greenwich they are built on marsh land. When they tried to dig out the tank it just kept flooding so the holder is built on a little mound – you could still see it when I wrote this article. There is still a tank below the holder but a third or so if it is above ground. The actual design work on the holder was done by George Livesey’s brother Frank –and despite being younger and better educated than George; he had to do what he was told.

The holder is very plain with none of the iron work decoration of earlier holders. Livesey was advised by an American military man that decoration was not necessary and that the design of the holder should express what it

was, and not try to be fancy. These were the sort of ideas which would later come into fashion with the style of architecture known as the modern movement and we should put the holder into this context as an industrial building.

The holder has stood there for nearly 130 years and it's seen a lot of things happen. Soon after it was built there was a massive strike in the works. In 1917 it withstood the terrible munitions explosion in Silvertown while its neighbour No.2. was badly damaged by the shock wave. The gas supply was saved by quick thinking Frederick Innes, who later received an OBE. Our holder was damaged by Second World War bombing.

Worse than that in 1979 the IRA planted the bomb alongside it and the resulting explosion woke up most of South London, except for me (I slept through it). These holders are designed so that the gas escapes into the upper atmosphere where it explodes. It’s very dramatic and frightening but does a lot less damage than if it exploded at ground level. Only a few years later, in the mid-1980s, the second holder, No.2. was demolished. No.1. continued to be used for storing gas – but now, not any more.

Gas is now stored underground and under pressure and these holders are redundant. It is seen as important by the authorities via the regulatory body, Ofgem, that

they should all be demolished. A very small number were listed on the basis of a consultant’s report and they will remain. One of those is the big No.13 holder at Old Kent Road, and another is the one at Kennington which is always on the TV when cricket is played at the Oval.

In some ways you can understand this view of the authorities. These huge structures are expensive to maintain and there is always the risk of danger to the public. They may present a temptation to urban explorers – or worse local ten year olds – as something to climb. Many of them are also on valuable sites which could be used for building.

However internationally all sorts of things have been done with gasholders, some are museums, or diving centres, or concert halls.

In London it is now well known that flats have been built inside gas holders and there is a similar scheme in Dublin. I also rather suspect that many gas industry staff are unhappy about seeing all these holders go. Many other holders have had local campaigns to keep them, and I know of none which have managed to prevent demolition of what many communities have seen as a local icon. We have always felt that we had a better case than most in Greenwich. Not just because the holder is valued by the community but also because of its size and advanced technology and design,

and its monumentality in the landscape.

There have been attempts to get the East Greenwich holder listed since at least the mid-1990s but all applications were turned down, or deferred indefinitely. What has happened –and this is a procedure which has been used for many other holders – it was declared, with very little consultation, that the holder had immunity from listing by the Secretary of State following an application from the owners to Historic England. They then told the Council that it was going to be demolished and asked them to agree the method of demolition, giving them only a very short time to decide. This was raised twice, once just before Christmas and once just before an election when councillors are not allowed to make decisions.

The local campaigners set up a petition and quickly got over 1500 signatures. Also some people went door to door and we are told that everybody felt strongly that the holder should be kept. We had meetings with gas company officials - some of these have been with Councillors and Council officials and the campaigners were very grateful for their support.

So – with all this effort why is it still going to come down? Partly of course, because the government seems determined to get them all down – but gas company officials tell us that all the rush is because of the Silvertown tunnel. The tunnel won’t run under the holder, but it will go very near it. So Greenwich will lose this valued monumental example of technological excellence - and for what? You couldn’t make it up!

harlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) Street Violence Ruins Lives (SVRL) campaign relaunched in January, highlighting its growing programmes to address street violence in local communities following new funding through the Mayor of London’s Young Londoners Fund.

Charlton Athletic’s fixture against Accrington Stanley at The Valley on 19 January was dedicated to the campaign, and players from both teams entered the pitch wearing SVRL t-shirts.

Sally and Jamie Knox chaired a pre-match reception looking at the history of the campaign and what CACT is doing to address the issue going forward. SVRL was launched following the tragic murder of Jamie’s brother Rob in Sidcup in 2008.

Key CACT partners signed a pledge card committing to support the campaign.

London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Sophie Linden and representatives from the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the London Borough of Bexley, Peabody Trust and the Metropolitan Police were all in attendance.

On Thursday 14 February, Greenwich Young People’s Council held an Anti-Knife Crime Summit at The Valley supported by CACT, running numerous discussions around the topic.

Charlton U23s player Junior Quitirna spoke at the summit and in January attended a

seminar with young people from CACT’s Post-16 Academy, sharing his own experiences of street violence and knife crime.

The summit was broken down into a variety of workshops led by youth organisations The Front 4 Project, RevolYOUtion & Street Doctors.

Other guest speakers included Cllr Danny Thorpe, Royal Greenwich’s Leader, who also spoke on 19 January, and Florence Kroll, Royal Greenwich’s Director of Children’s Services.

Chris Solly leads CAFC players out Paul Robinson, CACT’s Crime Reduction/Mentoring Manager, said: “I thought the young people who attended the event were very knowledgeable on the subject and had fantastic views.

The event was very engaging and it was clear to see young people were very passionate about what’s going on.”

Robinson appeared live on Sky News last month to respond to new figures and explain what CACT is doing to reduce knife crime in Royal Greenwich.

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via High Grove, Flaxton Road & vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
