The Forum at Greenwich to create new cafe for the community The Forum at Greenwich has teamed up with the Camden Society to create a café for the community.

Based on Trafalgar Road, the fully accessible community centre and registered charity has been providing a space and activities for local charities and the community for over 35 years now.

“We have recently seen a change in what the community is looking for to fill their spare time,” CEO Jill Andrews said. “This is a mixture of fitness, dance, children’s parties and play centre facilities and helping people with learning disabilities get back into work.”

With this challenge in mind, the

Forum has put together a strategy for the next five years to support these changes and to use its currently underutilised kitchen and café facility.

“We have just embarked on a partnership with the Camden Society, who are a charity that provide apprenticeship opportunities in catering for people with learning disabilities,” Jill said.

“We are also launching a purpose built dance and fitness studio in mid-February and possibly a soft play centre in the near future.”

Meet the first ever

Woolwich Laureate

Award-winning author Bernardine Evaristo has been appointed as the first ever Woolwich Laureate.

The year-long residency is part of a three-year cultural destinations programme rolled out by Visit Greenwich the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust and Festival.org, writes Laura Burgoine...

As part of this role, Bernardine is investigating the story of Woolwich at a key moment of change in its history, drawing on the inspiration of the people she meets and the day to day life of the historic riverside community.

“I’m the first lady of Woolwich,” Bernardine laughed. “I’ll spend a lot of time there and visit community groups, which I’ve already started to do.”

Born in Eltham and raised in Woolwich, Bernardine is the author of eight books of fiction and verse fiction exploring aspects of the African diaspora: past, present, real and imagined.

Her latest novel Girl, Woman, Other is a love song to modern Britain and black womanhood.

As part of the residency, Bernardine is writing a Woolwich narrative, likely in the form of a long poem.

“I was born in Eltham and lived in Woolwich until I was 18 then I left in 1978 and lived all over London: Kilburn, Brixton, Notting Hill, Islington, Brockley, New Cross,” she said. “I have family living in the area; my mother lives in Thamesmead, my father is in Abbey Wood. Our family history in this area goes back to the 1860s.”

Bernardine’s father is Nigerian and her mother is British. Her great-great-grandfather came to Woolwich from Germany in 1860 and opened up a master bakery.

He lived by the docks and died in 1920 in Plumstead. Bernardine’s mother’s side of the family worked in the arsenal during the 19th century.

“My family was in Woolwich in the ‘60s and back then people said “go back home” but we had deep roots in the area,” Bernardine said. “My father was the only Nigerian in the village, and all these years later, Woolwich is an incredibly diverse area. There are lots of Nigerians.”

Bernardine studied at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Sidcup while her introduction to the arts was at Greenwich Young People’s Theatre. “I spent weekends there from age 12 to 18 at drama groups,” she said. “GLYPT is still in existence. It’s expanded and grown.”

Girl, Woman, Other is the author’s eighth novel. “It’s

about twelve different, mainly Black British, women, from a 19-year-old university student to a 94-year-old farmer in Northumberland. It spans different ages and cultures.

Some characters are mixed race, some have roots in Africa or the Caribbean. They represent different parts of the country, different sexualities, and occupations. I wanted to explore a wider range of black British womanhood than we get to see,” she said.

Five years in the making, the stories segue into each other.

The author calls her style fusion fiction. “The text is shaped on the page. My work is on the experimental side, very free flowing.”

Having first been published in 2001, Bernardine is a literary veteran. “I’m proud to still be publishing,” she said. “A lot of people come and go for many reasons. We need more British black voices and we need people who have published a body of work. We also need older writers because younger writers tend not to write older characters,” she continued. “Mr Loverman [the

titular character of Bernardine’s 2013 novel] was 74 year old, a closet homosexual. When I was writing I thought no one writes this.”

Bernardine makes her career work by “juggling lots of things and compartmentalising every one of them.”

“It’s all day every day with lots of breaks,” she said. “I start work very early, around 5am or 6am.

I’ll exercise, I also teach. And you have to have a life. At nine o’clock I’ll switch on the telly and watch something. I think it’s important to decompress.”

As Woolwich laureate, Bernardine will naturally be spending lots of time visiting the library. “People feel passionate about the area and want to look after their neighbourhood and they do that through libraries and cultural centres,” she said.

“It’s wonderful even though it’s an area that isn’t a wealthy area, people are looking after each other.”

“There’s a grassroots culture that exists all over this country.”

The Shroud Maker comes to Greenwich Theatre

The “unbearable reality” of life in the Gaza Strip is at the heart of the blackly comic The Shroud Maker.

Written by Palestinian playwright Ahmed Mazoud, the play tells the story of 84-year-old Hajja Souad whose livelihood - making funeral shrouds - relies on the continuation of Israeli attacks on Gaza, writes Michael Holland...

“I wanted the play to have as much black comedy as possible,” said Ahmed. “Hajja is a survivor of war, displacement, identity loss, humiliation, soldiers and bullets. However, she has nothing left to lose in her octogenarian years apart from her sewing machine and a few shrouds to sell. But she does lament a past that could have been very different, growing up as a top designer in London, Paris or Milan.”

The play came from Masoud’s own experience of tracking the conflict in Gaza, fearful of the news that he might read.

“I wrote a few initial ideas of the play during that last 2014 Israeli assault” he said. “Back then, I was reading the news every night before I went to bed, making sure I read all the names of the injured or killed to be sure that my family and relatives weren’t amongst them. I didn’t want to go to bed, I didn’t know what I was going to wake up to.

Then one day I was reading a local news website and came across a woman who had her shop open selling shrouds.

When asked why she was still working, she replied: ‘Because I don’t give a f***’.”

Masoud began constructing a fictional background for her. “I started imagining her life and wanted to know more about her, how she got there. That night I laughed more than I ever had before - with that woman who became a hero to me.”

Laughter might not feel like a natural response to a situation like this, but Masoud asserts that for the people living in Gaza it is never far away.

“I wanted the play to have as much black comedy as possible” “Sarcasm and humour is an important aspect of Palestinian life. I grew up in the Gaza Strip and I remember my family members laughing in the face of occupation and military checkpoints. We have endless jokes on Yasser Arafat, the Israelis, Hamas, Fateh – you name it. The absurdity of the situation makes us more creative with our jokes.”

Astonishingly, while the real life Palestinian shroud maker was making her defiance known, the person who was leading the Israeli attacks, Major Ghassan Ellian, also had Palestinian roots. “It made me wonder. How could someone with roots and connections to the land and

people he is killing have the guts to do so? What does it take?

So I started imagining his life’s journey too and, somehow, his and Hajja Souad’s journeys met.”

The Shroud Maker reveals many characters from the imagined life of Hajja Souad, but they are all played by one woman - Julia Tarnoky.

“I wanted it to draw on a strong tradition of storytelling in Palestine and the Arab world in general,” said Ahmed “so I wrote the play as a solo performance.I grew up with the ‘Hakawati’ - a local old man who would come every week to the local café and tell stories from the era of the Crusaders, the Mamluks, the Ottoman Sultan and so on. I

wanted to continue this tradition and bring the story of Palestine to the stage through a personal experience of a woman who has lived through decades of injustice and survival.”

“We can only feel positive if we connect properly with the people and their humanity and stop thinking about them as part of a political drama. The play aims to do that. Hajja Souad’s insistence on carrying on and surviving is her way of offering a positive outcome. Those who believe in a better future will carry on doing what they do and survive no matter what the politicians or the hardliners want.”

The Shroud Maker is on at Greenwich Theatre, Crooms Hill, Greenwich, SE10 8ES from Monday 25-Thursday 28 February. Time: 7.30pm.

Copperas in Deptford "Copperas was made Mary Mills

O

ne of the earliest industries in Greenwich was a chemical works. In the late 17th century ‘copperas’ was made on Deptford Creek.

Copperas is nothing whatsoever to do with copper - it is an inky black substance which had been known in England from at least since the 14th century. Works were typically found near a river side and the best known, at Queenborough and Whitstable in Kent, have recently been subject to archaeological investigation.

By 1764 England was Europe’s biggest producer of what was then called ‘green vitriol’ .

Copperas was made from pyrites - ‘gold stones’ - which were collected from the Kent and Essex shoreline by 'pickers' and sent by barge to Deptford. These were put into trenches, covered with water and left for years. The resulting liquid was then boiled and produced a black dye. If it was more strongly heated, it produced 'oil of vitriol' – sulphuric acid.

The Deptford works appears to have been promoted by a particularly busy Royalist entrepreneur - a Sir Nicholas Crispe. This is not the Sir Nicholas Crispe who was based at Quex in Kent – but someone with the same name who came from Gloucestershire. At the age of 20 he had gone to Africa and set up the first English settlement at Kormantin, in today's Ghana in the 1630s. Inevitably, I am afraid, this was all about slavery.

He also had an exclusive right to trade on the Guinea Coast and he made a great deal of money.

In 1641 he was knighted and became a Member of Parliament although he was expelled from the House of Commons because of his monopolies. During the Civil War he devoted himself to the Royalist cause, raising regiments, providing ships, underwent a court martial and many other exploits.

After the Civil War he was eventually pardoned and settled in Hammersmith where he began to experiment with new ways of making bricks and some of his bricks were used in the gardens of the Palace in Greenwich.

He also tried to sell bricks to John Evelyn, the diarist, who, of course, lived at Sayes Court in Deptford.

In 1655 Crispe visited John Evelyn to suggest building a 'mole near Sayes Court' at Deptford. A

Copperas Works, 1650s mole was a sort of breakwater or pier in the River. Evelyn mentions Crispe’s visits in his diary and he also kept the letters which Crispe wrote to him about it and they are in the British Library. I was very amused to read them - first of all Crispe had really terrible hand-writing, but the letters show that Crispe made several visits to Deptford to discuss his ideas with Evelyn, who was apparently always 'out'.

Later he raised with Evelyn ideas for a 'project for a receptacle for ships' which Samuel Pepys noted entailed a dock at Deptford to take '200 ships of sail'.

Crispe had rented a piece of land alongside the Creek in Deptford before the Civil War in the 1630s. It was called 'Broomfield' - Great Crane Meadow' and this was probably where the copperas works were, although we know very little about it. He was certainly manufacturing copperas thirty years later when he petitioned to be released from prison – he was there for debt.

He gave his copperas works as an example of his usefulness to society and a reason why he

should be released.

Crispe died in 1666 – still selling bricks at 12/- per 1,000.

His heart is buried in St.Paul's Church in Hammersmith as part of a monument to the memory of Charles I. He left the copperas works to his three sons, who each got a share but it in effect it was taken on by his son, Nicholas.

As part of the new regime, there seems to have been and evaluation of the copperas works and probably some modernisation. A plan of 1674 shows the “coppris works” on Deptford Creek in the area between the Creek, so slightly north of what is now Creek Road.

There were a ‘coppris beds’, a ‘coppris house’ and ‘docke’ into Deptford Creek, which is marked as ‘Ravensbury River’.

One of the younger Nicholas Crispe's friends was a Daniel Colwell, who was a member of the newly formed Royal Society.

Colwell went down to the Deptford copperas works and wrote a descriptive article about it for the Society. This gives details of the set-up of the works and how

copperas was made there in the 17th century. It is often quoted in descriptions of other works as to how things were done.

Colwell described how the pyrites – the stones - were put into 'beds' - trenches of about a hundred by fifteen feet and twelve feet deep. They were then covered with rainwater – and it must be rain water, other water would not do. It was then left there for several years. The stones, he said would ‘turn into a kind of Vitriolick Earth, which will fwell and ferment like leavened Dough’.

The liquid was run off into a cistern ‘made of strong oaken boards’ which was ‘under the Boiling House’. This liquid was very strong and ‘within one minute after an Egg is put in, the Liquor will boil and froth; and in three minutes the shell will be quite worne off’ and it would burn a hole through cloth – wool, hemp or leather. This liquid was then put in a ‘boyler of lead’ along with some ‘old iron’. It was then boiled for as much as ’20 days’ using ‘Newcastle coals’ and they also added more iron.

However Colwell explained that through some new and clever devices the ‘boyling’ time was being cut to a week. The whole process gave off an ‘acrimonious smell’.

After being boiled, the copperas was run into a twenty foot long cooler where it crystallised on the sides where it was bright green – but what remained at the bottom was ‘foul and dirty’.

It was used to produce a dye and if it was processed further it produced another dye, Venetian red. Most of all it could be used to make vitriol – sulphuric acid, an extremely valuable commodity and its production is often cited as an example of a nation’s industrial strength.

The younger Nicholas Crispe consolidated his wealth with a fine house in Kent. In the early 1680s, he bought Squerries Court at Westerham and built the house which still stands there.

The house – which is sometimes open to visitors - remains as a symbol of the sort of money made by entrepreneurs with what was undoubtedly a smelly and dirty works down on Deptford Creek.

Copperas continued to be made in Deptford, and later also in Greenwich until at least the 1830s.

It was later owned by the Pearson family – and there is another story there to tell.

Charlton Athletic trio discuss equality and diversity poems with local pupils Charlton Athletic Manager Lee Bowyer, Assistant Manager Johnnie Jackson and new signing Josh Parker met local schoolchildren recently to read equality and diversitythemed poems as part of a poetry competition run by Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT).

CACT teamed up with some of the schools across the Royal Borough of Greenwich that it delivers in, setting up a competition inviting pupils from 20 local primary schools to write entries about equality and diversity.

Poems were shortlisted by a judging panel comprising CACT’s Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Dr Michael Seeraj, Anthony Quarm and Bradley Marshall from CACT’s Football & Sports Development strand, and Charlton Athletic’s Player Liaison Officer Tracey Leaburn.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping Restrictions) (Amendment No. 10) Order 2019 The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) (Amendment No. 10) Order 2019 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich on 25th February 2019 made the above-mentioned Orders under section 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Orders will come into operation on 4th March 2019.

2. The Order will come into operation on the 5th March 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 3 weeks. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from, exiting, waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Brook Lane in a north bound direction between Kidbrooke Park Road and Kelsall Close this will make this section of Brook Lane one way in a South bound direction.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Brook Lane, Susan Road and Kidbrook Park Road. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
