Jam Tomorrow is a community play by GLYPT which is transporting its guests back to the era of mods and rockers – specifically, to the time when Bowie lived in Bellingham. The site-specific play is taking place at the Fellowship Inn in Bellingham South London and is also a celebration of the Grade II listed pub’s restoration. Built in the 1920s, The Fellowship has played host to musical legends including Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton in the past.

The production has been produced in partnership with Phoenix Community Housing and is being performed by members of the local community.

Mycenae House is helpin people tackle loneliness & M

ycenae House in Blackheath is not your typical historic property surrounded by beautiful gardens. Under the management of Vanbrugh Community Association, regular community activities are run there, including several Reach Out Projects which aim to support vulnerable and isolated people in the community, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The team of Reach Out Project workers run a drop-in café for seniors every Thursday afternoon, through which the ‘knitting nanas’ was born. The group knitted items in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and took part in Dementia Action Week.

Working in partnership with Age UK, the Reach Out Project also ran an initiative called ‘Men in Sheds’, bringing together men over 50 to make small wooden items for the community. Then there’s 'It Takes 2', a scheme aiming to help those with learning disabilities connect with others in the community around shared interests. Meanwhile, a new choir aimed at adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities will hold its first session on March 6.

One new initiative already up-and-running at Mycenae House is particularly interesting: called ‘Shh....Don't be Lonely', the project has been designed to tackle isolation in younger people. The fortnightly sessions take place on Tuesday evenings, are free to attend and operate on a drop-in basis. “There’s a common stereotype that loneliness mainly affects older people – and of course it can, and does. But also there are several reasons why younger people might feel lonelier,” points out Deborah Fitzpatrick, a community outreach worker who runs the Reach Out Project at Mycenae House.

“The years between 16 and 24 are often a time of transition where people move home, build their identities and try to find new friends.

These sudden and often enforced life changes can have a massive impact on younger people.”

Deborah believes that between technology replacing human interaction, heavier workloads and less socialising, many young people are finding it harder to make friends. “We are living through an epidemic of loneliness

security, as well as providing support when times are difficult.”

“Admitting you are lonely isn't easy, especially when we are supposedly living in an age where we are more connected than ever,” points out Deborah.

“But in fact, many recent surveys point to loneliness and social isolation growing across all age groups, not just seniors.”

As well as providing young people with a supportive setting in which to form friendships with like-minded people, the project hosts regular guest speakers to shine the light on the full spectrum of issues surrounding loneliness and social isolation,

in the hope it’ll provide guidance for those experiencing it.

The team are also able to recommend other organisations to anyone who attends the sessions and raises issues that can’t be dealt with at the time.

So far, the sessions have been particularly popular with those who are new to the area, those who work from home and those who are not in contact with family or friends, but Deborah stresses that the sessions are open for all to attend. “You are very welcome to join even if you are not lonely right now, because someone attending could really do with your friendship and company,” she says.

“We have had a great response to the 'Shh....Don't be Lonely' sessions. Numbers are growing, and we want our community to shout about this group and let people know about it,” says Deborah, adding that the more who know about the project, the more people it can help.

“People do find it hard to walk through the door for their first session, we won’t deny that, but there is always a friendly face to help you settle in and you won’t be alone,” she adds.

“We all understand this isn't easy, especially if you have ever experienced social anxiety or nervousness with meeting new people in unfamiliar surroundings. But again, you are definitely not alone, having any or all of these reservations is quite normal.”

For Deborah, the best thing about being a community outreach worker is seeing the people who attend the projects grow with confidence. “It’s just wonderful to see the progress in people. I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing those who are shy and helping them to flourish and feel confident,” she says. “We believe with the right setting and people, friendships can flourish.

german comedy ambassador comes to bromley W

e Brits like to mock the Germans for what we consider their lack of a sense of humour, but there are, of course, exceptions to the rule, writes Holly O’Mahony…

One such exception is the popular German-born, UK-based stand-up comedian Henning Wehn, who is bringing his new show Get On With It to the Churchill Theatre in Bromley.

Henning moved to the UK in 2002 to improve his English and initially planned to stay for just one year. “But the good weather, the tasty food and the classy women made me stay,” he later joked in an article on explaining the German humour for Time Out. During his stay, Henning saw an open mic night advertised and decided to give comedy a try. The experience was a success and he began to perform stand-up routines regularly, styling himself as the ‘German Comedy Ambassador in London’.

Henning went on to perform as a warm-up act for various big name comedians, including for Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle show. Today,

Henning is a lead act in his own right, performing routines typically based around common stereotypes about Germans.

Henning’s recent television appearances include: Live At The Apollo on BBC Two, Have I Got News For You on BBC One and Would I Lie To You on BBC One. Radio wise, he has been on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk and BBC Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth.

After performing at the Churchill Theatre on Saturday 16, Henning continues to tour Get On With It around the country, with shows booked throughout the year until December. The tour includes a month-long stint at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh in August, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Have the time of your life this Valentine’s Day

It was a little over 30 years ago that Dirty Dancing first cha-cha-cha’d its way onto our screens.

The film, written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed

by Emile Ardolino, was released in October 1987 and since then, it’s firmly held onto its place as one of the greatest romantic dramas of all time, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Swimming in iconic moments (the lift scene and the Lover Boy miming scene to name a couple) and memorable quotes (“Nobody puts Baby in the corner” perhaps the most famous), it’s among the best of its kind. If you missed Dirty Dancing in the cinemas back in the ‘80s, or want to experience it up close again, Greenwich Picturehouse is screening the film on Valentine’s Day. Dirty Dancing tells the story of 17-year-old Baby (Jennifer Grey), who goes on holiday with her family to Kellerman’s holiday resort in the Catskill Mountains. There, the privileged but shy teen meets dance teacher Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), who teachers her to dance and who she soon begins to fall for – against the approval of her well-to-do

While the steamy romance between Johnny and Baby takes centre stage for much of the film, the subtext of Baby finding her voice, her passion for dancing and falling in love for the first time makes Dirty Dancing a classic coming-ofage movie. Furthermore, the subplot of Baby’s friendship with Penny Johnson (Cynthia Rhodes) – which sees Baby use her father’s wealth to help Penny obtain an illegal abortion when she accidentally falls pregnant – makes the film about friendship as well as love.

It’s the relationship between Baby and Penny (written, let’s remember, by female writer Eleanor Bergstein) that makes Dirty Dancing one of few films of its genre to pass the Bechdel Test – which dictates that a film must have at least two women in it who talk to each other about something other than men.

Dirty Dancing catapulted Swayze to stardom. The awardwinning actor went on to play lead roles in Road House (1989), Ghost (1990), Point Break (1991) and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995), among other

titles. It also inspired future films which followed it, including 2004 hit The Notebook, which borrowed from Dirty Dancing’s lake sequence and wealthy-girlfalls-for-bad-boy plotline.

Among the best-loved traits of Dirty Dancing is, of course, the soundtrack. Set in the summer of ‘63, the film is littered with some of the greatest hits of the decade (‘Be My Baby’ and ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ among them), as well as original songs – most famously ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’. The latter was co-composed by Franke Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz, and won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1988.

So, whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with the Baby, Lover Boy or Penny in your life, if a romantic movie night is your calling, cha-cha-cha your way over to Greenwich Picturehouse to see Dirty Dancing on the big screen.

Shedding the light on an important historical figure at Greenwich Theatre T Their 2017 show We Are The Lions Mr Manager told the story of Jayaben Desai, the leader of the 1976-78 Grunwick Film Processing Factory Strike who brought the issue of workplace exploitation and racism to the fore, challenging the perception of Asian women being inherently passive and docile.

Now they’re back with Rouse, Ye Women!, a folk opera about Mary Macarthur and the Women Chainmakers. The show is being performed at Greenwich Theatre on February 19 as part of its current UKwide tour.

Set in 1910, Rouse, Ye Women! is based on the true story of Mary Macarthur, a British suffragist who focused the world’s attention on the plight of Britain’s low-paid women workers involved in the ‘homeworking sweated industries’. These women were paid just 5 shillings (25p) for a 50-hour week involving hammering out chain-links, often in the backyard sheds of their homes.

Macarthur, the union organiser and campaigner, led hundreds of women to lay down their tools and go on a 10-week strike for a living wage.

The Greenwich Weekender speaks to actor, writer and co-founder of Townsend Theatre Productions Neil Gore, to find out more about the show.

Holly O’Mahony: Your plays are often based on inspiring historical figures who are rarely profiled elsewhere. What made you decide to create a play around Mary Macarthur?

Neil Gore: Our theatre projects are about people who should be revered and celebrated, but are often forgotten figures of history, largely

ownsend Theatre Productions are a theatre company dedicated to telling the stories of inspirational people who have made a significant contribution to the world of work and to society.

because their achievements are scorned by the elite. Our work in the past has centred on the stories of the famous Tolpuddle Martyrs, the Shrewsbury Pickets, the International Brigade and the brave strikers at Grunwick. The inspirational leadership of Mary Macarthur, who led the fight to draw public attention to the plight of sweated labour – in particular its women workers – seemed like a worthy focus for us. Her story, and the story of the women who risked what little they earned from their work to go on strike is a story that deserves to be told.

HOM: Why is the story of Mary Macarthur relevant to audiences today?

NG: In every project we create there are modern relevances, especially to do with the workplace environment, conditions and wages.

The story of Mary Macarthur has so many relevant connections – increasingly with the fact that many workers in the UK are in poorly paid jobs.

Apart from climate and the environment, we believe no issue is more important than creating a fair

and equal society. This is something Mary Macarthur realised in the 1900s – it was unhealthy for society and inexcusable for civil society to allow people to be degraded and devalued when there was the means available to make life better for all.

HOM: Tell us more about the history of Townsend Theatre Productions. How did the company come about?

NG: We founded the company in 2011 after working in the industry for a number of years. Louise Townsend [the company’s director and producer] spent 21 years as a theatre producer, director and stage manager, working on West End shows including The Lion King and We Will Rock You, while I spent more than 35 years as a touring actor and writer, working with the likes of Eddie Izzard and co-founding Sheffield’s Metro Theatre Company.

We always dreamed of forming our own theatre company through which we could tackle projects that are not only relevant and political, but also innovative, funny and entertaining.

NG: There are many important historical events for us to explore in future, and there is no shortage of inspirational people whose stories we want to relive on stage. We can’t say what’s next for us just yet, but it’s unlikely we shall stray too far from what audiences expect to see from us – there are too many stories that need to be told.

HOM: Rouse, Ye Women! is described as a 'folk opera'. What made you decide to style the show this way?

NG: Songs have always been an important feature of our work and there are a number of great songs written about the struggle of working people. In the case of Rouse, Ye Women!, songs are central to the story we tell about Mary Macarthur, and we have chosen to present the story as a ballad ‘opera’ – a style of song that was popular at the time. There’s also a strong tradition of songwriting and performance in political theatre, which is one aspect of our work that we are continuously aiming to pursue.

For Rouse, Ye Women!, we have collaborated with revered folk musician John Kirkpatrick to write original songs which will take audiences through the struggles of the women chainmakers as they fought for justice. We also have two accomplished

Visual Geometry is Nick’s second exhibition. In February 2018, his first photographic exhibition Nick Raynsford on Water opened at the Greenwich Gallery before transferring to the U&I offices in

Howick Street, Westminster. The exhibition raised over £8,000 for homelessness charity Crisis. The net proceedings of Nick’s second exhibition are being donated to the Greenwich Winter Night Shelter, which provides accommodation and support to local homeless people.

“The notion of seeing the world as a form of visual geometry is attributed to Henri Cartier-Bresson and perfectly sums up one of the contributions that photographers are called upon to make to society,” says exhibition curator Tony Othen, commenting on the inspiration

behind Nick’s artistic style. “Nick Raynsford is showing us that he can see the world in a different way – a world full of shapes and angles often in the most unlikely places,” he says. “He is helping us to see not only visually, but with context and content – a mission that is not only for artists but also, I suggest, for politicians.”

For Nick, the theme ‘visual geometry’ is an exploration of the way that geometry influences how we see things and how it brings structure to what might otherwise look confusing or chaotic. Images in the exhibition range from local

sites, such as close-up shots of the intricate patterns of ironwork on the Greenwich Power Station jetty, to views from further afield, including that of steps in an Italian hill town. “I hope that visitors will enjoy unusual perspectives of the world around us,” he says.

Rumours are rife of there being another Beast from the East on its way (although, at the time of writing several days later, said beast still hasn’t manifested itself). Still, it’s cold enough to make the idea of having brunch in a tropical-themed café hugely appealing.

Isla Ray opened its doors six months ago. It’s run by Rachael Dalton-Loveland, who was inspired by the café culture she found while living in Melbourne.

On returning to her south London home, Rachael made it her mission to set up a cafe that captured the easy, breezy style she found so popular in Australia.

every which way we turn, from the mismatched velvet furniture to the blue walls and yellow bar.

Between the bamboo furniture, palm plants and beach scenes painted on the walls, the setting transports us somewhere tropical. But then there’s the blue and white patterned tiles which harken to somewhere in the Mediterranean and the Chinese fans splayed on the walls pointing to the east.

Ultimately, it’s hard to tell which corner of the world Isla Ray is trying to transport us to, but there’s a holiday vibe all the same – ruined slightly by the dinginess due to a lack of natural lighting and a slight chill creeping in from beneath the door.

To the menu: fruit juice seems like an appropriate thing to order here (we’re at a tropical beach bar after all) and so I opt for a freshly squeezed orange juice.

It’s not squeezed on site, I’m

told apologetically, but it could have fooled me: fresh, extremely pulpy and chilled with two large cubes of ice – it hits the spot.

Coffee (a black Americano for me, a flat white for my companion) comes in mismatched, colourful crockery and is a little bitter but not too strong. Jars of cutlery and Barbie pink paper napkins arrive, followed by our food.

From the predominantly vegetarian menu laced with seeds, herbs and all things good for the gut, I ordered the garlic mushrooms, which came tossed in thyme and chives, between two slabs of sourdough. To this, I added a fried egg for good measure. It was garlicky (duh) and a little oily but at the same time both light and filling – making it a breakfast dish of champions.

My companion ordered the Isla special: a hashbrown, fried egg, roasted vine cherry tomatoes

and avocado. The dish came prettily displayed with the fried egg centred on the hashbrown, the tomatoes circling it and the avocado placed carefully to one side. A drizzling of sriracha mayo zigzagging across the plate plus a delicate sprinkling of micro coriander on top made it look like a piece of contemporary art.

Perhaps the best thing about Isla Ray is the sense of community it projects. You won’t just find breakfast and brunch served in the day, drinks and records (yes, there’s decks) in the evening.

There are regular yoga classes and knitting workshops, too.

Between the warm glow of its table lamps and fairy lights, and comfy furniture, there’s a cosy living room feel to Isla Ray that might sit at odds with its tropical decor, but makes it a welcome (and welcoming) addition to Deptford High Street.

Discuss a scientific approach to prayer P

ractitioner of Christian Science healing and international speaker Alexandre Fischer is giving a talk on “How spiritual perception can bring healing” in Blackheath.

The talk focuses on universal healing precepts found in the Holy Bible, especially in Jesus’ life and teachings, and shows how they are available for anyone to understand and experience. Fischer will discuss the approach to spirituality and well-being that explains these ideas, Christian Science, and share examples of healing from his own life and the lives of others.

The talk is free and open to the community.

Fischer will explain why Christian Science is both Christian and scientific, and how anyone can prove its effectiveness for themselves, as fully described in the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by the founder of the Christian

Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy. Fischer will also touch on the life of Mary Baker Eddy, a mid-nineteenth century woman from New England, and how she came to understand, confirm, and teach what she felt was original Christian healing. Eddy herself said she was especially inspired by Jesus’ demand, “He that believes in me, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these will he do, because I go unto my Father” (found in the Gospel of John 14:12 in the Bible). For over 150 years, people around the world have also worked to follow Christ Jesus in this practice of Christianity and continue to do so today, with healings of physical ills and personal difficulties for themselves and others.

Fischer has been a practitioner of Christian Science healing for many years, helping people on a daily basis through this scientific approach to prayer. He travels from his home base in Paris to speak to
