The science of living a healthy life T

here’s no slowing down medical maverick and creator of the 5:2 diet Doctor Michael Mosley.

Now with his new book Fast 800, Michael is hitting the road with a nationwide theatre tour, writes Laura Burgoine...

The TV doctor invented the iconic 5:2 diet, which involves two days a week of “fasting” on 500-600calories, six years ago. “It was hugely popular, then I wrote a book called the 8-week

Blood Sugar Diet, where you eat 800 calories a day, and now the Fast 800 brings together all the stuff I’ve learned,” Michael told the Weekender. “I’ll share what I’ve learnt about nutrition and exercise and get people to vote on fact or fiction, prove some myths wrong and hopefully take some questions from the audience.”

He describes this book as an update on the 5:2 and a further exploration of intermittent fasting.

“The book goes into the science,” he said. “For diabetics and overweight people, this rapid weight loss approach is vastly superior to a slow and steady process,” Michael said. “It’s terribly motivating. You can lose 2-3kg a week. Your body switches metabolic mode and goes into fat burning mode because you’re not constantly storing sugar. You follow a low-carb, Mediterranean diet with the right mix of nutrients and enough protein. The notion that the body goes into starvation mode is complete and utter nonsense.”

Michael actually started his career as an investment banker, after

the camera for the first time in Trust Me I’m A Doctor.

“It’s a busy life,” Michael said.

Now he’s expanding his career with his first ever theatre tour.

“I was at the BBC for 32 years; I left in April. I spent ten years as a presenter, ten years as an executive, then I invented the 5:2 diet and started writing books,” Michael said.

As part of the live show, Michael will talk about his early years in television and programming, which involved creating the BBC documentary Pompeii: the Last Day. “I’ll be showing some of my other stuff from the telly. I’ve worked with Jeremy Clarkson, John Cleese, David Attenborough, Liz Hurley…”

Michael said.

“People either know me from telly or my books,” Michael said.

The doctor aims to be both entertaining and enlightening and is looking forward to interacting with audiences at the Churchill theatre.

So does Michael follow his own advice? “I stick to a Mediterranean diet,” Michael said. “My wife is a GP and she puts this diet into practice with patients. Hopefully my wife will come along to some of the events;

“One of my missions in life is to tell the medical professional about this,” Michael continued. “I give talks to doctors and they’re very receptive.

They’ve got to be convinced it’s worth doing. Doctors are generally reluctant to give patients dietary advice.”

'We're ready for the great reveal' The Painted Hall to re-open after 2 year conservation project The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College reopens in March after a two year conservation project, which has brought the interior back to life, writes Laura Burgoine...

The UK’s answer to the Sistine Chapel, the Painted Hall is a masterpiece of English baroque art. The £8.5 million conservation project, supported by a £3.1-million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), has reversed years of decay and conserved the Painted Hall for generations to come. Between 2017 and 2018 an accessible observation deck gave over 80,000 visitors the opportunity to observe the conservators at work.

Its reopening is part of a major transformation project by Hugh Broughton Architects that will also see the reopening and restoration of the King William Undercroft beneath the Painted Hall, which will now house a new café, shop and interpretation gallery, The Sackler Gallery.

Chief Executive of the Old Royal Naval College Angela McConville said the conservation is “sensational”. “The results have even surprised the team who already knew it would be spectacular,” Angela told the Weekender. “It was nerve

wracking for them and took six weeks to take the scaffolding out but it looks stunning.”

The ground-breaking project to clean and conserve the paintings started in 2016. It was one of the largest open access conservation projects in Europe. As the painted surfaces were cleaned, new details were uncovered that revealed how Thornhill planned and executed his vast work.

Shadows of corrected details appeared behind later paint layers and large areas of beautifully detailed history painting emerged from behind dirt and decay. As many as 30 signatures from previous ‘restorers’ were studied at close quarters, including one indelicately placed on the bosom of Mary II, revealing 300 years of almost continuous cleaning.

A film crew was on site to capture the finished project on film. “Once we open to the public, we’ll have less opportunity for filming because we want to prioritise visitor access,” Angela said.

The reopening of the Painted Hall sees the introduction of a new visitor experience at the Old Royal Naval College. Visitors can take a guided or self-guided tour of the extensive site, setting off from the newly refreshed Visitor Centre and access into the Painted Hall.

The tour will take in all aspects of Wren’s riverside masterpiece including the famous Water Gate, Grand Square and the Chapel, and includes access into the Skittle Alley (a normally ‘limited access’ area of the site).

The Painted Hall experience also includes a new multimedia guide providing an informative introduction to the paintings, with 60 minutes of content available.

Live talks led by an expert team of staff and volunteers throughout the day will also help to bring the paintings to life, alongside a collection of exquisite touch objects inspired by characters and items depicted on the ceiling which visitors will be able to get up close to and try on. These include a replica of King William’s crown and cloak, Athena’s shield with Medusa, and the red cap of liberty, symbolic of freedom in William’s Hand.

“This project has created a lot of excitement. 80,000 people came to see the Painted Ceiling while it was being conserved, which shows there’s a tremendous public appetite for getting up close to projects,” Angela said.

“We’re ready now for the great reveal,” she continued. “We’ll let the hall speak for itself. The view of the team was that the sublime experience of going from the King

William Undercroft to the hall is sensational.”

The lost baroque undercroft –once a club room for Naval officers- is now a café and shop.

“The master plan was to bring the space into purposeful use. We’ve restored it to its original form.”

Harry Potter star brings solo show to Greenwich Theo Ancient brings his solo show The Shy Manifesto to the Greenwich Theatre Studio - direct from playing the lead role in one of the most high profile plays in the world, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, writes Michael Holland...

“It’s a job like no other,” he says of stepping into JK Rowling’s magical creation. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. There was so much excitement and anticipation in the theatre.

I would stand backstage 10 minutes before the start and just listen to the audience. You could feel their excitement. And it seems that no matter where you go, if you say you’re a part of Harry Potter, people light up!”

The Shy Manifesto will be very different. Written

by Michael Ross, the play is a bittersweet comingof-age comedy drama about a shy boy who has had enough of constantly being told to come out of his shell. 17-year-old Callum is proud to be shy and he thinks you should be too, because what this noisy, crazy world really needs right now is some more self-restraint. delivers his manifesto, exploring adolescence, isolation, self-loathing and sexuality, and encourages his audience of radical shy comrades to finally rise up and inherit the earth.

However, will memories of the previous night's drunken escapades at a classmate's end-of-term party upend the fragile identity he has created for himself?

This will surely be a completely different experience to leading a team of wizards in the West End – the show is playing in small venues and there isn’t a wand in sight – but Ancient says he can relate to the theme of the play. At school, teachers would remark that he’d rather take a book into a corner than join in more social activities.

While he did “toy with the idea of dying my hair black and riding a skateboard,” he quickly found his “sense of belonging” in drama. groups and acting.

'All I wanted to do was act and perform,' he smiles.

'I never really fitted in anywhere else.'

“The play gives a character like Callum the chance to say everything that’s going on inside his mind,” he explained, “when

normally he would keep quiet at the back of the class and not say anything at all. We give him a voice and ask, ‘What would he say’? It’s a coming of age story that explores our insecurities and growing up as an introvert. I hope people will come along to the theatre and fall in love with Callum and his story. I hope they will go on a rollercoaster with him and leave feeling elated, excited, full of questions and debate. And, hopefully, inspired.”

Losing a loved one is hard for everyone - and having to make difficult decisions about funeral plans at such a time can feel daunting.

A funeral can usually only take place after the death is registered. Most people use a funeral director, though you can arrange a funeral yourself.

FUNERAL DIRECTORS Choose a funeral director who’s a member of either: • National Association of Funeral Directors • The National Society of

Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) These organisations have codes of practice - they must give you a price list when asked.

Some local councils run their own funeral services, for example for non-religious burials. The British Humanist Association and Institute of Civil Funerals can also help with non-religious funerals.

ARRANGING THE FUNERAL YOURSELF Contact the Cemeteries and Crematorium Department of your local council to arrange a funeral

yourself.

There are three cemeteries within Southwark. Most burials take place at Camberwell New Cemetery, although it's still possible to arrange burials in Camberwell Old Cemetery and Nunhead Cemetery. Usually your Funeral Director will make the arrangements according to your wishes. However you can still contact their offices directly if you have any questions.

Life after loss Continued from p17 PAYING FOR A FUNERAL The funeral can be paid for: • from a financial scheme the person had, for example a prepaid funeral plan or insurance policy • by you, or other family members or friends • with money from the person’s estate (savings, for example) - getting access to this is called applying for a ‘grant of representation’ • you can apply for a Funeral Expenses Payment if you have difficulty paying for the funeral.

MOVING A BODY FOR A FUNERAL ABROAD You need permission from a coroner to move a body for a funeral abroad. Apply at least 4 days before you want the body to be moved.

Find a local coroner using the Coroners’ Society of England and Wales website. There is a different process in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

How could the increase in probate fees affect me and my family?

T

he recent Government announcement that a new price structure for probate fees is to be introduced as early as April 2019 has been met with widespread condemnation.

Kalpa Prajapati, who is the head of the Wills and Probate department at Grant Saw solicitors, explains what the increases mean and the steps which people can take to help plan for them.

At present the fee for probate is a flat £215 for individuals and £155 for those applying through a solicitor. Under the proposed new structure, the price would be linked to the value of the estate and this is the main cause of the criticism that these proposals has attracted.

Estates valued at more than £2m will now pay £6,000, while those worth between £1.6m and £2m will pay £5,000 and those between £1m and £1.6m would pay £4,000.

Estates worth between £500,000 and £1m will have to find £2,500, while those in the £50,000 to £300,000 price bracket will pay a more affordable £250. Those valued at less than £50,000 will be exempt.

This is the second time that the Government has tried to introduce

such changes. The last time was in 2017, though the maximum charge for the largest of estates, being those valued at over £2 million was the much higher figure of £20,000. These plans were unsurprisingly abandoned at the eleventh hour, due to the fast approaching general election.

Unfortunately, the Government has still not addressed how the increase in fees will be paid.

Unlike funeral expenses and

inheritance tax, which banks and investment companies generally allow Personal Representatives, (who are either Executors appointed under a Will or Administrators under the rules of intestacy if there is no Will), to finance from the assets held by the deceased, the general consensus currently is that such institutions will not agree to the probate fee being funded by the estate without the Grant of Representation

(probate). This creates a vicious cycle for Personal Representatives, as they cannot access funds without the Grant of Representation, for which they will have to pay an exorbitant fee.

In terms of planning for such fees, it may be sensible to set up a joint bank account with a family member so that these funds can be easily accessed upon death.

This is because the account will automatically pass to the

surviving account holder. However, it is important that such action is not taken without specialist legal advice being sought. This is because any steps taken to organise someone’s affairs could impact on their inheritance tax position and their Will instructions.

There has also been a steep increase in the number of estates being challenged after a person has passed away and so it is more important than ever to make sure that you have sought appropriate advice to try and alleviate these risks and to ensure that your estate will pass in accordance with your wishes. There are however steps which can be taken during someone’s life to reduce the fees payable on death.

Thoughts on bereavement

These were words from Iris Murdoch, a famous novelist, extremely gifted with the ability to put her thoughts and feelings on to paper. She expresses the effect of her own grief in this small but powerful quote.

Bereavement is a very personal and indescribable journey, one that we are all afraid of having to make. The harsh reality is that at some point in our lives we will be faced with losing someone we love.

I myself grew up living above our funeral home here in Rotherhithe. I was blessed to have the best dad a boy could have asked for, he was also the greatest teacher because my whole life I have been learning from the experiences of others, but my dad helped me to understand the effects of grief in people’s lives and he instilled in me and my brother the importance of being a funeral director.

I would once have gone as far as to say that I was a bit of an expert in bereavement. How

wrong I was. When my father passed away on Saturday 6th of June 2015, nearly four years ago, I realised very quickly that, despite my lifetime of education in and around death and care for the bereaved, I now was without my dad and felt as helpless and lost as anybody else.

You cannot prepare yourself for losing a loved one. There are no courses or lectures that will provide you with the answers to your anguish.

Doctors cannot prescribe a painkiller for your grief. There are no tools available to help you rebuild your life.

The fact is when someone we love so dearly passes from this world, at that very moment it happens, our lives have changed forever.

We feel numbness, sadness, shock, despair. Our minds are trying to understand what has actually happened, what it means to our future, whilst life around

us moves only in one direction, forwards. That is the emptiness of bereavement.

People want to help. It’s our instinct as human beings to want to make things better. But in truth the best way of helping is by not making things any worse. We just need the love

ones can be comforting. It’s after the funeral that the journey of grief really begins. Everybody goes on with their lives and you remain empty, as the realisation of living without them becomes ever so present and we feel that separation further with every passing day.

Life moves forward at such a pace that we feel under pressure to move on with our lives but we don’t want to. Friends can often avoid us, or avoid talking about that person, when what we really need is to be able to talk about that person, to express what we loved about them and what we miss.

As I said there are no answers or cures, but I believe that encouragement from others can help us to make a positive progression in our bereavement.

Not the kind that is pushing us to go too fast but the kind that encourages us to allow ourselves to go at our own pace, to step away from responsibilities and

There will be days we take steps back and feel helpless, but as long as we are getting up and taking that first step, we are moving forward and support of our families and friends to deflect the everyday stresses and strains of life.

We need our friends to still be friends. The funeral itself is undoubtedly hard, but the love, respect and appreciation we see from others towards our loved

demands so that our minds can adjust to the changes our lives now face.

If we can wake up, put one foot in front of the other and begin our day, then we are moving forward. There will be days we take steps back and feel helpless but as long as we are getting up and taking that first step, we are moving forward.

Our memories are our greatest link to our loved ones. Take the time whenever, wherever, to scroll through the photo and video albums we hold in our minds. As we go on with life, our perspective adjusts in its own way to remind us that the love we have held in our hearts for that person has never left us. It is still part of who we are. They remain with us always and there is no set time frame, just when we truly acknowledge this we can begin to find a purpose again.

All that I do in my life I do with my father in mind, I still seek his approval even though he is not physically here, his words of encouragement and his lovely ways echo in my mind. They are there for me like a personal library, I just have to take the time to feel it.
