The NBA Returns to the O2 The National Basketball Association (NBA) returns to the O2 Arena this Thursday January 17 for the NBA London Game 2019. A

nna Ziman is a woman of many skills.

She’s a qualified psychotherapist, teacher, actress and shamanic practitioner.

She was also far ahead of the wellness craze, having run her own women-only retreats, Open to the Goddess, for the past 20 years. These retreats, which accommodate up to 13 participants, are open to women of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs, and aim to help women ‘express their magnificence’ and ‘channel something magical’ beyond themselves.

The Greenwich & Lewisham Weekender speaks to Anna to learn more about what happens on these spiritual weekends away.

Holly O’Mahony: You've been running Open to the Goddess retreats for 20 years. What inspired you to set them up initially?

Anna Ziman: I began running the retreats because I felt there was a real need for women to experience a sense of feminine power and truth, something different from the dominant masculine force that was prevalent at the time. My work was never about bashing men but helping women find their real magnificence, which is not about age or looks, but a deeper feeling that they have opened up to a truth about who they really are in essence.

Discover your inner goddess on a women-only retreat

HOM: You were working as an actress at the time. Did you always have a desire to move into wellness and female empowerment territory?

AZ: I’d felt a sort of calling that this was my purpose since I was a child, actually. (I also have a photo somewhere of me kneeling with my 13 dolls very seriously, like a leading priestess.) At the time, I had been a professional actress, director and teacher for 15 years, so had skills in listening and working with groups. I also spent time in the ‘80s and ‘90s studying Psychology of Vision, which was a very advanced and mind blowing Jungian approach to personal development – a sort of mixture of psychodrama, deep psychological principles and constellation therapy. From this I learnt to apply principles of psychological healing that I still use.

HOM: Today the wellness market is pretty saturated, particularly in terms of products and services aimed at women. Presumably, though, there was little else like your retreats when you began running them?

AZ: When I began there was nothing like them – all ‘new age stuff’ was seen as very flaky and really rather odd. A lot has now changed; giving time to selfdevelopment work and yoga is now seen as normal. For me, it’s been wonderful to see the growth of many women’s and Goddess groups – even if many of the

young ones seem to be yoga based.

HOM: Would you say there’s now ‘competition’ in the market for retreats like yours?

AZ: I don’t see the new Goddess work as competition and I’m really happy it’s emerging. A new type of confident woman is emerging across the board, too; things like the #MeToo movement and the recent election of more women into the House of Representatives in America is so inspiring to see.

That said, some of the growing Goddess movement seem a bit superficial and about being a Goddess on the outside, rather than taking on and embodying the idea at a core level. My retreats are about finding and channelling an ancient Goddess energy which is really beautiful to witness – I’ve not seen or heard of that happening elsewhere. Having

years of experience in running retreats means I bring expertise to them and know how to hold a very safe space.

HOM: Is there a particular demographic your retreats appeal to?

AZ: My retreats are for women of all ages, not just the young and fit.

Usually, my retreats are attended by women aged between 30 and 70. In the past, I’ve done special trips with 20 year olds, but women in this age group tend to still be in a place of external loveliness and seeking that (as they should).

A major turning point, I’ve found, comes when women reach their mid-thirties.

HOM: How do you go about finding places to host retreats?

AZ: I realised early on that

the retreats needed to be held in beautiful places so women could feel nurtured on all levels.

I look for beautiful retreat centres surrounded by nature. That way, nature plays an important part in the whole weekend.

HOM: Where have you taken people on retreats in the past?

Any favourite destinations?

AZ: I’ve held retreats in Wales, Ireland, Dorset, Oxfordshire, New Zealand and on Holy Island off Scotland – among other places.

The Wicklow Mountains in Ireland is my absolute favourite as it’s so secluded and beautiful there.

The most recent retreat I held was near Penzance in Cornwall. It’s the perfect place – beautiful, wild and with an ancient fogu cave which is perfect for ritual.

HOM: Can you talk us through

a typical day on an Open to the Goddess retreat?

AZ: On Friday we set the energy and a sacred space in a room that’s decorated like a temple with saris and an altar. Women have an opportunity to share why they came but are not forced to.

Then I lead a number of group processes, including a drumming shamanic-type journey. Everyone is then gifted with a specific Goddess which she will be working with the whole weekend.

As of Saturday, each woman begins an individual ritual which is taken from her story – it could be around what she wants to shift or what’s been holding her back – and this is mixed with the story of the actual Goddess. It’s hard to describe the actual process of the retreat – and important that it does remain a sort of mystery.

AZ: I hope by the end of the retreat they feel renewed. From the feedback I’ve had, some women say the experience of coming on a retreat has literally changed their lives or completely transformed relationships that weren’t working for them. One woman said it took centuries off her.

HOM: What do you love most about running Open to the Goddess?

AZ: I take away real satisfaction in seeing women so empowered and beautiful, and having shed some burden that’s held them back. I still do some acting and work as a psychotherapist but the retreats are my deepest passion. I feel like my true self on the retreats and imagine I’ll run them for the rest of

HOM: Finally, is your next retreat already in the pipeline? If so, what can you tell us about it?

AZ: It is! In March 2019 I’ll be taking a group to Rosemerryn near Penzance in Cornwall. The retreats are always held over a weekend and this one will run from Friday 8 March until Monday 11 March. There will also be one in early summer retreat in the Wicklow Mountains again, and I’m currently looking at options for others in Wales, the Lake District and Poland.

SOCIAL MOVEMENT Many of us move around each day without really paying attention to what we’re doing, writes Holly O'Mahony...

We rarely think about our gait when walking, the gestures we use to express ourselves, or the mannerisms that others recognise as an extension of who we are.

Most of us feel self-conscious dancing and might only do so on special occasions after a couple of drinks. One artist practitioner looking to change our relationship with movement, though, is Steven Zilinskas of Shenanigans Theatre Company.

Through a series of weekly creative movement workshops at Mycenae House, running from January 16 till February 20, Steven is encouraging participants to explore their interests and work with him to create a movement piece that illustrates these passions.

The creative movement workshops are part of the Reach Out project run by Mycenae House and have been designed to tackle social isolation and loneliness.

“The workshops are open to adults of all ages but I am very interested in participants who are lonely,” says Steven.

The workshops are an opportunity to experiment with ideas using art and dance.

“By taking part in a six-week workshop project, participants will be able to engage in a creative process, taking into account their interests in order to create a piece of work together – although the sessions will also help to develop wellbeing and individual skills,” he says.

Steven’s recent work with Shenanigans includes a solo show, Mirage, which he took to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2018 and toured to other parts of the UK including Worcester later last year.

The show was billed as ‘a kinaesthetic exploration of reality and empathy’ that questioned: what does a person have to do to move you?

Deptford cinema celebrates Kim Longinotto’s films of inspiring women Long before the Me Too movement spread virally in October 2017, British documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto was making films about inspiring female victims of oppression and discrimination, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The 66-year-old filmmaker explored female genital mutilation in Kenya in her 2002 film The Day I Will Never Forget; women standing up to rapists in India in Pink Saris (2010); and the story of an Indian Muslim woman who spent decades locked up by her family, but managed to smuggled poetry out to the world in Salma (2013).

To celebrate the work of Kim Longinotto, Deptford Cinema is running a series, Kim Longinotto: Vixen Films Retrospective. This Sunday, January 20, the cinema is screening two documentaries Kim co-directed with fellow filmmaker Jano Williams. First up is the pair’s 1993 film Dream Girls, a 50-minute documentary that investigates the world of the Takarazuka Revue, a prestigious musical theatre company in Japan. Thousands

of girls apply to join the entirely male-run Takarazuka Music School each year but very few are accepted. Those who are, go on to endure years of disciplined and reclusive existence before they can graduate into the Revue, where they can choose to play male or female roles. Dream Girls offers a rarely-seen insight into the contradictions of gender and sexual identity experienced by

these women in Japanese society.

Following Dream Girls, Kim and Jano’s 1995 documentary Shinjuku Boys is being shown.

The 53-minute documentary won the Outstanding Documentary award at the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival the year of its release.

The film explores the lives of three onnabes (women who live as men and have girlfriends – but don’t

usually identify as lesbians), who work as hosts at the New Marilyn Club in Tokyo. Coupling sequences of life inside the club with intimate interviews, the film unobtrusively observes the onnabes at home and on the job, with all three speaking frankly about their views on women, sex, transvestitism, lesbianism and their genderbending lives.

While the heterosexual women

coming to the New Marilyn Club provide more of a backdrop to the lives of the onnabes in Shinjuku Boys, their disappointment in real men seems eerily predictive when viewing the film 24 years on in 2019. Last July, a Radio 4 programme titled No Sex, Please revealed the startling lack of heterosexual sex going on in Japan – a country with a rapidly declining birth rate and more elderly citizens than any other industrialised nation.

Meanwhile, official Japanese government statistics suggest 42 per cent of single men and 44 per cent of women aged 18-34 have never had sex.

Further film’s by Kim including: Pride of Place (1976), Theatre Girls (1978), Divorce Iranian Style (1998) and Sisters in Law (2005) are being screened on different date as part of the same series. See the Deptford Cinema website for more information.

Dinosaurs and digging up the past at Greenwich Theatre S

outh-east London amateur dramatic society The Roan Theatre Company is performing two one-act plays, under the umbrella title Dinosaur Pieces, at Greenwich Theatre studio, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The plays have been written by Stuart Mitchell-Smith, who also acts and directs for the company, and are linked by a common theme: palaeontology.

The plots of both plays are entirely fictional, while the true stories of historical characters have been woven in. The first play, Carriages & Correspondents, is set in London in 1856 during the dawn of the fourth estate.

The Reverend William Buckland – an academic, geologist and palaeontologist who discovered the Megalosaurus – lays on his deathbed in a private asylum, where a journalist is hoping to secure a scandalous deathbed confession from him.

The second play, The Dinosaur Jacket, is a story of rivalry narrated by two famous historical palaeontologists: Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh.

Set in the present day, the story follows a group of amateur palaeontologists who are lost in the middle of Oxfordshire. The group make a remarkable find, while a wife unearths a shocking secret about her husband.

“My choice of play has always been those [based on] subjects which were, in my opinion, fun subjects,” says Stuart MitchellSmith, who has been an actor with Roan Theatre Company since 2004, and a director and writer for

the company since 2013. Stuart previously directed the company’s productions of Alan Ayckbourn’s Communicating Doors and Comic Potential, and wrote his own play, You Only Die Once, as a ghostly comedy for Halloween in 2015.

“After dealing with themes of time travel, AI and ghosts, I joked that my next play would be on the subject of dinosaurs, so Dinosaur Pieces is mostly inspired by that

quest to write a play on the subject of dinosaurs,” Stuart laughs. “As I delved into research I found the real life stories of palaeontologists who shaped and shamed the world of palaeontology to be utterly compelling, and these characters became an inspiration all by themselves.”

While Carriages & Correspondents is debuting at Greenwich Theatre this week,

the company performed The Dinosaur Jacket at the Rochester One Act Play Festival in 2017, where Stuart says it won several awards. The idea to run the two plays side-by-side came following the company’s production of Alan Bennett’s Single Spies (also two one-act plays) in January 2018.

“While the plays are selfcontained, they are linked not only by theme but by subtle (and not so subtle) references that refer to, or mirror darkly, the companion piece,” explains Stuart. “For me, the job is to make sure all of this plays out as naturalistically as possible.”

For Stuart, the role of director is akin to that of an orchestra conductor. “The musicians know how to play their instruments, the conductor is just there to make sure it’s all harmonious,” he says. “The actors ask questions, suggest and offer ideas, and then it is simply for me to say yes or no and offer alternatives.”

As well as being entertained by the plays, Stuart hopes his audience will leave feeling inspired to unearth the plays’ historical characters for themselves. “I should really love it if they walk away with the same sense of fascination that I found when researching it,” he says.

A night of chamber music at Blackheath Halls Classical music lovers in search of a Friday night concert should head to Blackheath Halls, where the resident orchestra is performing an evening of chamber music on January 18, writes Holly O'Mahony...

The free concert takes place in the Recital Room, the venue’s more intimate space.

Since it was re-established in 2006, Blackheath Halls Orchestra has grown to over 60 members and performs four major concerts each year in the Great Hall. The orchestra has recently taken on a new Musical Director, Christopher Stark, who co-founded the acclaimed Multi-Story Orchestra.

Built in 1895 by William Webster, the Halls played host to some of the most famous musical performers and public speakers of the early 20th century, including the contralto Dame Clara Butt, the explorer Sir Ernest Shakleton and the playwright George Bernard Shaw. The venue was taken over by the Ministry of Works in 1939, saved from the threat of demolition in the 1980s and re-opened as an entertainment venue in 1991.

Today, the Halls are a wholly owned subsidiary of Trinity Laban Conservatoire and part of the oldest surviving purpose built cultural complex in London.

hampagne + Fromage is a bistro and shop serving… you guessed it, writes Holly O'Mahony...

The three-branch chain first opened in Covent Garden, offering a classy pit-stop for those browsing the boutiquelined streets. The concept proved a success and the company opened a second outlet in Brixton two years later, in 2013. There, however, the offering ruffled feathers and sparked protests with some local residents calling for ‘Yuppies Out’. But this second branch also found custom – if only with said ‘yuppies’ – and in 2015, Champagne + Fromage opened its Greenwich branch. It’s here that, as a final hurrah before succumbing to the pressures to partake in Dry January, a friend and I decided to toast the end of 2018 with champagne and a side of cheese.

Champagne + Fromage is actually a partnership between two companies serving artisanal French produce: French Bubbles, which sells awardwinning champagne grown on family-owned vineyards, and Une Normande à Londres, a French family-owned company bringing their cheeses, cured

meats and preserves across the English Channel to London.

We arrived on the penultimate evening of the year and were guided to our table – a window spot hugged either side by sofa seating – by Pierre, the passionate restaurant manager who took us through the menu with such enthusiasm we secretly wanted him to join us for a glass to tell us more.

Pierre suggested we order the gastroboard (three cheeses, three meats, cornichons and tapenade) and a trio of champagne flights to make the most of the menu, pointing us in the direction of the right champagnes to accompany the cheeses and charcuterie coming our way.

First, we sampled a glass of Michel Furdyna, the house champagne which is mainly comprised of Pinot Noir. It was clear, sharp and fruity – the apple and pear notes coming through. Our garlic and herb baked camembert arrived soon after and as we dragged hunks of French baguette through its oozing centre, we paused to sip glass number two – a creamy bottle called Colin, which exquisitely accompanied the camembert and other cheeses (a creamy blue, strong brie and rich goat’s cheese).

The trio of meats proved a treat too. A mushroom salami was deep and aromatic in flavour while a floretteshaped huddle of ham slices

were so deliciously smoked I found myself transported to the French countryside. The third cut, a fattier, heavily spiced salami, tasted like happy, sunny holidays. We tipped our hats again to Pierre for recommending the rosé champagne – made up of 92 per cent chardonnay and 8 per cent Pinot Noir – which brought out the flavours of the meats even more.

The tapenade – a creamy and bland mix of what was possibly artichoke and capers – was forgettable. While the glacé cherries added more to the appearance of our board than the flavour.

We could have stopped there but still deep in conversation, we decided to order one more glass to sip while finishing off our tales of the year just gone. Pierre recommended the Le Gallais, a ‘no sugar’ champagne, easier on the head the morning after. We enjoyed this golden glass with a plate of assorted macaroons – fresh and full of flavour – from which the pistachio piece won our vote.

By 7:30pm, we were the only diners left in the restaurant and I wondered if things weren’t going so well at this third branch of Champagne + Fromage. But,

it was a Sunday - not a typical night for drinking bubbles. All the same, the restaurant doesn’t quite carry off the atmosphere of other joints with a similar offering, such as WC in Clapham with its mood lighting and strong whiffs of charcuterie as soon as you enter its underground doors. That said, Champagne + Fromage does what it says on the tin, while offering plenty of champagnes, cheeses and meats to take home, too, should you like what you try.
