Disney's leading ladies Dream Big Disney’s leading ladies take centre stage (or ice rink) in the latest Disney on Ice show: Dream Big, which begins its 12-day run at the O2 Arena on Boxing Day, writes Holly O'Mahony...

Led by Tinker Bell, the wintry performance of high-flying jumps, daring acrobatics and lovable Disney characters whisks audiences through the tales of eight Disney princesses, each determined to make her dreams come true.

The all-new production, produced by Feld Entertainment, sees several of Disney’s wellknown stories brought to life side-by-side on the icy stage.

Viewers get to dive under the sea with the fearless dreamer Ariel, who yearns to explore life above the waves; watch Rapunzel, Cinderella and Belle as they discover how to make their own magic; travel to the wintry world of Arendelle with sisters Anna and Elsa; witness Jasmine discovering

a whole new world; and join Snow White, Aurora and Tiana as they demonstrate how strength and kindness go hand-in-hand. Fans of 2016 hit movie Moana will be thrilled to hear the titular character is making her London skating debut in Dream Big, too, marking the first time local audiences will have the chance to see the children’s heroine take to the ice.

“Before dreaming up this show, we reflected on what makes Disney’s leading ladies so unique,” said Producer Kenneth Feld in a press release for the show. “Having three daughters, it didn’t take long to realise that every princess had one thing in common: each one had a dream and the determination to make it a reality. We wanted to share that inspirational message with our audiences by celebrating the stories of these courageous young women and the friends that helped them along the way,” he says, pointing out that it’s the inclusion of new and exciting characters –

like Anna and Elsa from Frozen, and Moana from Moana – that helps keep Disney on Ice shows current and evolving.

Adapting memorable moments from the hugely popular films for the ice presented an interesting challenge to the creative team, who knew it would take glittering sets, dramatic lighting and captivating choreography to pull off.

For costume designer Ilona Somogyi, the experience bore similarities to her work on costumes for the hit Broadway production Spamalot – the musical-comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail – where she used a very well-known film with several beloved characters as her primary resource. For Dream Big, Somogyi found herself creating costumes for equally well-known characters, recognisable by their dresses worn in Disney’s animations. “My underlying inspiration [for the costumes] was

the little girls who go to the shows dressed as their favorite Disney Princess. Seeing them made me nostalgic and took me back to what dazzled me as a little girl,” she said.

Meanwhile for set designer Robert Little, the goal was to

create a set that would look as stunning as the princesses themselves but be flexible enough to allow the telling of the various different tales – which take place in a range of locations, from snowy mountains to the depths of the sea. Using a little sprinkling

“When telling nine distinct stories, it’s important to be able to create a new environment to set the stage for each tale,” said the Emmy Award-winning Lighting Designer of Dream Big, Peter Morse. “Robert Little did this with the transformable set, and it was my mission to fill the rest of the ice with radiant lighting that would place the audience in the heart of these stories.”

For Creative Director Jerry Bilik, the most exciting thing about the show is the cast. “These exceptional performers help translate the stories to the ice magnificently,” he said. “Their portrayal of the princesses and princes sweeps the audience away because they capture the essence of the characters’ hopes, dreams and heroism.”

Mitchell, the ice skater playing Moana, the newest lead addition to the Disney on Ice cast. “It’s so important to dream and to have goals, and to work really hard to achieve those dreams – and to never give up,” says Antonia. “For ice skating in particular, it’s so fun.

You get to glide on the ice, wear fabulous costumes, skate to the music and entertain people,” she adds. “I’ve had a lot of big dreams in my life and one of them was to travel the world – and it came true with skating in Disney on Ice.” The Europe-wide tour of Disney on Ice’s Dream Big comes to the UK from France, where it’s subsequently returning to, before heading on to Belgium, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal in 2019.

Theatre As a true child of the ‘90s, my main reference point for A Christmas Carol was handed to me in the form of the Muppets. For a long time I thought that was all I needed as far as this story goes but, it turns out, perhaps less surprisingly to most, that I was wrong and there is a whole lot more this tale has to offer, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Muppets aside, A Christmas Carol is one of those tales as old as time, regurgitated every Christmas in one way or another that can make it seem a bit ‘done’. The Old Vic’s offering of the magical Jack Thorne’s adaptation is anything but that, bringing a new lease of life to the text and old Ebenezer alike.

Stephen Tompkinson’s miserly curmudgeon Scrooge is more grumpy than evil but it works.

This Scrooge has a sense of self-awareness to him that almost makes you pity him as he lurks about the stage with his scruffy hair and tattered clothes.

You are really rooting for his transformation from economical to extravagant along his ghostly journey through past, present and future. The performance presents a complex look at coldheartedness that neither belittles Scrooge’s past nor scrimps on the festivities of the ending.

The piece as a whole feels very Dickensian, from the top-hatted and tail-coated cast handing out mince pies and oranges upon entering, to the amber glow of lanterns adorning the set. The hand-bells played by the cast, pealing out ethereal versions of Photo: Manuel Harlan carols throughout the show were a real treat, paradoxically conjuring a Gothic atmosphere as well as a festive one. After the spectral decadence of the first act, parachuting Brussel sprouts, zip-lining turkey and a snow cannon see you through the infectiously joyous second half, resulting in a pantomime of pandemonium.

If the message of A Christmas Carol is ‘God bless us, every one’ then Thorne’s adaptation (and, for this performance Luka Petrovic’s Tiny Tim) certainly delivers on it.

Moving and atmospheric, this is one that is likely to thaw even the biggest Scrooge out there this Christmas.

The weather outside was truly frightful the evening I saw this and yet my mum and I left the theatre with smiles on our faces, carols in our ears and full of Christmas cheer.

Mama's recipe is a success After walking down Deptford High Street – still lively with crowds buying fruit and veg, fresh fish or household goods from market traders – turning onto polished Deptford Market Yard can feel a little jarring, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Its Stepford-neat expanse is quieter and emptier than the streets beyond, even at 7pm on a Friday night. That is, until you peer into the windows of its trendy traders and spot the crowd of urbanites enjoying post-work merriment. It seems a world apart from the high street that’s really mere feet away. One business merging the two realms and bringing the Caribbean influences found on the streets outside into the relatively new Market Yard is Mama’s Jerk, a casual restaurant and takeaway specialising in dishes marinated in ‘jerk’, a Jamaican style of seasoning made from allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers.

Mama’s Jerk is a family-run business that brands itself on a familiar story: a grandma (in this case the Jamaican Mama Charlotte) with a much-coveted secret recipe (for Mama, a Jerk BBQ marinade) that’s passed down from one generation to the next. Here, it’s landed in the hands of Mama’s grandchildren, who have used her original jerk recipe to recreate authentic Caribbean flavours in south London.

So far, so successful for Mama’s Jerk; the brand has come a long way since it began serving food at Vibe Bar on Brick Lane in 2010.

The traders were eventually able to open their first permanent site in Pop Brixton, with the Deptford branch following soon after. In November of 2018, they opened a third site, this time Canary Wharf.

Is there a calling for jerk chicken in London’s shiny finance hub?

There must be; the team behind Mama’s Jerk are savvy when it comes to knowing where to take their business, squeezing in extra commissions through catering at office events and private functions and running a food truck at festivals too.

Like its Pop Brixton sibling, Mama’s Jerk in Deptford is a simple, no frills affair. Four wooden tables are surrounded by brightly-coloured, rusticallyfinished stools. Large cans painted in the colours of the Jamaican flag sit on each of the tables, bearing cutlery (or more specifically, wooden forks not usually seen outside of fish and chip shops), and napkins. The atmosphere is calm and a little sleepy; no music, just the sound of chicken gently sizzling away behind the counter when I arrive.

Food arrives on paper plates, which adds to the restaurant’s Caribbean shack vibe, and presumably is a corner cut given the tight space, but feels a little wasteful in today’s climate. It’s what arrives on the plate, though,

that we’re here for. First up is fried plantain – which harbours a freshness despite being fried. It’s thick, straight-from-the-pan hot and that bit more savoury than its doppelgänger the banana.

This is swiftly followed by the main event: Biriyardi – a take on

biryani that sees fragrant bits of dry-spiced jerk chicken chopped on top of similarly seasoned rice and kidney beans, served with a side of tropical salad – shredded lettuce, carrot, sweetcorn, baby tomatoes and a dusting of coconut. The plate is decently balanced; the punchy, heavy, meaty side is lifted and lightened by the salad.

Two of the five sauces made and sold by Mama’s Jerk are popped on the table for me to further dress the dish with at my leisure. One is a mango mayo, which is a little plain, and yet I find myself squirting and re-squirting it onto my plate to tame the fiery jerk. The second sauce is jerk bbq dressing which is fragrant, garlicky and spicy – ‘jerkalicious’, as the Mama’s Jerk website would say. A third sauce, a jar of homemade Pepper Pickle, sits decoratively on each table too, but I’m warned it’s very, very spicy and, given I’m already pushing the upper end of my heat tolerance, I choose to avoid it.

The food menu at Mama’s Jerk is small – just four main dishes and a further four sides, and the drinks selection is equally minimal: bottled water, Fairtrade Karma Cola soft drinks, Coconut Water, Herbal teas and Jamaican Red Stripe beer. Out of curiosity,

I order a tap water, half expecting the minimalist outfit not to serve it but to my delight I’m proved wrong and an entire chilled water filter arrives at my table. It’s much needed and I pour glass after glass despite knowing water doesn’t really counterbalance spice.

I’d eat at Mama’s Jerk again, or perhaps order it to enjoy in the comfort of my own home.

The restaurant is listed as a takeaway on Deliveroo, Uber Eats and event Amazon Restaurants (which I’ll admit I’d never heard of before). If you’re in the area looking for a no-fuss spot serving decently-priced and delectablyspiced food, Mama’s Jerk is worth a whirl.
