TECH IT OUT Three Blackheath High School students received the Silver Duke of York Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) from Buckingham Palace. Year 13 students Alice Watters, Epiphany Watterson and Aleezey Malik took part in the international programme that encourages participation in the digital economy. To earn their award, the students completed online modules covering online safety, web design, cyber security, gaming, cloud computing and animation. Prince Andrew created iDEA to provide people of all ages and backgrounds with the opportunity to develop digital enterprise skills; it is considered the digital equivalent to the Duke of Edinburgh’s award..

eenwich Theatre's ntomime comes up trumps again Once again, and seemingly without fail, the Greenwich Theatre turns up trumps with another great panto that brings together the baddest of baddies and the mother of all dames, writes Michael Holland...

For Robinson Crusoe this year we are first introduced to the supporting cast and storyline, with a couple of rather excellent students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance doing some sterling work, a young Robinson Crusoe in the guise of Matt Jolly (What a voice!), Michaela Bennison as posh totty Polly Perkins, Arabella Rodrigo multi-tasking all over the shop, Tom Guest playing Captain Wallace Windblower with gusto, and Lizzy Dive as the human masthead Saucy Nancy, playing it all chuckles and cheek.

But it is Anthony Spargo as the dastardly Gingerbeard and Andrew Pollard as Dame Delores Crusoe that we have come to see, and once we had met the rest they made their entrances to boos, jeers, wows and cheers.

With Mr Pollard once more putting his pen to paper for this panto, he has written in all the best costume changes for himself (Wows), and there are some absolute blinders - The one with the bells was particularly hilarious. But, generously, he does not take all the best lines, instead throwing them around quite freely like confetti to others. Although he does also throw in several curve ball ad libs to keep them on their toes when they have to improvise their way out of it, much to the amusement of the audience.

When Gingerbeard first pokes his sneering face round the curtain we all know what to do (Boos), and he loves it, he thrives on it and admits that he ‘hates kids’ (Jeers).

which is a cue for a whole shoal of seafood-related puns and double entendres (I got his winkle out with a pin…). The jokes came verbally and visually and at different levels for a crowd that ranged from 6 to 86 (That was just in my party of four), which sometimes meant confused youngsters would be looking askance at grown ups apparently laughing for no reason at all.

The best moments are when Pollard and Spargo get at it together, hamming it up in the finest traditions of the panto genre, and playing off each other in a tale that doesn’t have to make sense but is a whole lotta fun. In fact, one of the best bits was when all the loose ends were shoe-horned into an unbelievable finale!

Andrew Pollard knows his stuff so you know you will get everything you want from this pantomime: song, dance, goodies, baddies, fun and frolics and a love interest that concludes with a happy ending (Cheers)

Perfect panto

There was a big sparkly opening for Cinderella when Lesley Joseph flew in on a flying glittery moon and introduced herself to the packed house as the Fairy Godmother. After that bit of pure kitsch it was panto all the way to its expected happy ending, writes Michael Holland...

Yes, it’s Cinderella and her Ugly Sisters, played beautifully grotesque by Graham Hoadly and Jack Land Noble enjoying more costume changes than Beyoncé in concert, and both out to ruin their little sister’s life.

Fortunately, Cinders has the love of Buttons minding her back.

Unfortunately, Buttons is not as clever as he would like to be so having the Fairy Godmother keeping a watchful eye on proceedings ensures things go smoothly… Most of the time. But it is the ups and downs that make Panto such a joy.

We all know the tale of Cinderella and the Prince meeting fleetingly and falling head over heels in love before having the chance to exchange names and numbers. The show bounces between camp and kitsch quite happily, and provides fun for families of all ages. There are some standout scenes, such as Cinderella and her Prince Charming arriving in a beautiful silver coach pulled by Shetland Ponies, the adorable dancing children from the Laura Bruce Dance Academy, Buttons’ (Phil Reid) comic skit with two audience members, and the very clever song and ‘dance’

near the end where Buttons gets prodded, poked and hit in the face with a frying pan. And, of course, Ms Joseph gives us her vamp schtick, even appearing as Dorien - a disguise to sneak into the ball.

Charlotte Haines in the

eponymous role brings unblemished beauty and a crystal clear singing voice to the show and is the ideal counter for her very blemished sisters, Claudia and Tess. There is a good smattering of local drama school students receiving top class

experience here; and a finely tuned ensemble keeping the show vibrant at all times.

Every child should see a pantomime at Christmas and this one will tick all the boxes and press all the right buttons.

to victory Eltham Escape Rooms opens with a space-race brain-teaser, a VR crime scene and spy challenge set to come.

Holly O'Mahony talks to owner Dean Day to find out more...

Eltham’s entertainment scene just got a whole host more exciting for puzzlers who like cracking codes and working their way out of a sticky situation – while keeping a calm head. The new Eltham Escape Rooms are now open, offering three different challenges for problem-solvers to work their way out of.

The Weekender speaks to Dean Day, owner of Eltham Escape Rooms, to find out more.

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, for those who haven’t heard of the concept before, what is an escape room?

Dean Day: An escape room, also known as an ‘escape game’, is a physical adventure game in which players solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints and strategy to complete the objectives at

hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the rooms.

HOM: Do you remember the first escape room game you ever played?

DD: If I remember correctly, the first game I played was themed around a bomb. We had a lot of rooms to pass through and eventually use a remote control car to defuse the bomb for us. It was awesome – and we escaped with time to spare.

HOM: Wow. Any other particularly memorable escape rooms you've played along the way?

DD: I once played a horrorthemed escape room in Benidorm, Spain whilst on holiday with family. What we didn’t realise was that the room had a surprise

live actor. There was a mannequin zombie in one room and at one point, a puzzle involved getting something from its jacket.

The mannequin had been switched for a real person without us realising and needless to say, I screamed like a girl.

HOM: So what led you to want to set up a set of escape rooms in Eltham?

DD: Eltham Escape Rooms is a family business run by myself, my father-in-law Robert Smith and a long term family friend Paul Gobbett. It was a joint decision to set the rooms up; we've played many escape room games around the world, we decided that we really, really wanted to make our own. We were also inspired by how friendly other owners in the industry are.

HOM: How did you go about

finding the physical building to transform into your escape rooms?

DD: Finding a property that was big enough, in the right area, affordable and achievable was about a two month process!

HOM: Did you then design the rooms yourself?

DD: Everything that we've built was designed by our team from scratch – no instructions or pre-built items. It took us a good eight weeks of working all day, every day.

HOM: What can you tell us about the rooms themselves?

How many challenges are there and how are the rooms themed?

DD: Only our first room, Temporal Tours, has opened so far. It’s a sci-fi based

game where the challenge is to get off the 'Chronos One' ship before it explodes.

It's not an easy one – we’ve rated it a 4/5 for difficulty – but it's lots of fun and there is lots inside the room for large groups to do.

We're currently in the process of putting together a two-player VR Experience, Robotic Asylum that we aim to launch before Christmas.

It's a sort of Cluedo experience where players have to inspect a crime scene and work out all the evidence.

We also have a third escape room in the works, which is currently pencilled in as a WWII themed room based on real history and facts, where players uncover a spy ring within the British Intelligence.

This challenge should be a little easier – we’re aiming to make it a 3/5 in difficulty.

HOM: What’s been the

reaction to your new escape rooms? Have many people dropped in to have a go so far?

DD: Everyone who has played so far has loved the game – whether they manage to escape or not, they come out with a big smile on their face. I would say 50% of our teams fail – normally because of someone in their team hoarding a clue and not using it; we can't fix that! Still, over 95% of teams have been

making it to the last couple of puzzles, so they get a buzz out of the last-minute panic.

HOM: If 50% aren’t managing to escape in time, would you say some of your puzzles are too hard?

DD: There are two puzzles that we feel take teams too long to work out, so we're in the process of reworking them – none of our puzzles require outside knowledge though, just for groups to stand back and

work them out.

HOM: Do you feed in clues when teams get stuck? If so, how are you able to help them from outside the room?

DD: We watch the teams all the way through via the 10 cameras and 4 microphones set up in the room. Players are able to ask for clues using a radio and we don't penalise groups for requesting clues.

We also offer clues if we think a group is really struggling and falling behind. It's actually

great fun watching and listening to the random ideas and solutions players come up with.

We're planning on moving this over to a more sci-fi based messenger system

by Christmas though, where players will use a space pager to type a request for clues.

We'll then reply by text to the pager with the clues.

HOM: Finally, any advice for local residents who are thinking about booking a trip to

the Eltham Escape Rooms?

DD: Make sure you bring your smartest friends and family – this 60-minute experience will really challenge your mental skills and observation. If you're a fan of Crystal Maze or Fort Boyard, you'll have a blast.

Festive Ivy The Ivy Café in Blackheath is getting festive with a special menu throughout December.

The restaurant is serving up three limited-edition festive cocktails, including the Merry Martini (£8.75) with Monin pumpkin spice syrup, Absolut Vanilla Vodka, Baileys Irish Cream, whipped cream and ground nutmeg, and the GIN-ger fizz (£9.95) featuring Plymouth Gin and lemongrass cordial, topped with Ivy Champagne and a lemongrass stalk. Just desserts Greenwich has a new lowcarb dessert shop and café for the health-conscious sweet lover.

The sinfully guiltless offerings are gluten free, high protein, low carbohydrate with no added sugar (sweetened with stevia) and with a number of vegan options.

Yummzy’s founder has had strict dietary requirements from a young age, which sparked the idea for the brand.

“I have only been disappointed every time I heard of a sugar free ice-cream that was actually infested with fructose or honey or other forms of carbs that would become glucose in the body – just

as sugar would. Even low carb, high protein drinks and balls came with serious lies,” the owner said.

The café owner found existing low sugar ice-creams and desserts in the market were rare and overpriced. “With diabetes and obesity becoming the fastest growing health threats, stress and lifestyle causing more people to develop intolerances and requiring special diets; it only seemed natural to come up with something that those with special dietary requirements or health conscious individuals (or freaks) like us can enjoy, without compromise and fits with the hectic city lifestyle.”

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) Dumbreck Road to Mottingham Service Road PLANNED TEMPORARY RESTRICTION / ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate the ongoing works by UK Power Networks for the new major cable route programme from Falconwoods to Sydenham order 2018 Part 2.

2. The Order will be inforce from 4th January 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the programme is expected to take 13 Months. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading), and banning turns in – Sherard Road, Prince John Road, Keynsham Road, Everest Road, Pullman Place, Tattersall Road, Lilburne Road, Froissart Road, Keynsham Gardens, Vandyke Cross, Mayerne Road and Green Way. 4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic diversion will be set out by the placing of the appropriate signage with advance notice. Prohibitions will remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing of the appropriate traffic signs prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016(b).
