The postman always sings twice Greenwich locals can be serenaded with a song as they post their Christmas cards this year. Royal Mail has introduced four ‘singing’ postboxes across the UK with Greenwich Promenade the chosen representative in England. The postbox plays one of a selection of three Christmas-themed ditties when a letter or card is posted.

AirCraft Circus Academy presents its end-of-term student showcase with an evening of circus cabaret.

orget New Year’s resolutions and great expectations; start living the life you actually want, writes Laura Burgoine...

In her new book Stop ‘shoulding’ Start wanting, Charlton local Judith Quin teaches people how to replace duty with desire. The actress, coach, sound energy practitioner and massage therapist describes the book as an introduction to coaching. “It means people are making empowered choices,” she told the Weekender.

“People are starting to find their voices and when you do that then you can start expressing yourself. So often people will hand in their resignation but they haven’t asked for what they want in their job.”

Holding your own truth is a vital part of the process. “It’s about knowing what you want on a level that’s true, not reactionary,” she said. “You might think ‘I want that person to stop piling work on me’ but under that is you want more autonomy. That’s the thing. It’s not a reaction to someone else. That’s the slightly deeper level.”

Classically trained as an actress, Judith says acting is all voice and body: breath work and supporting your voice. “As a massage therapist I know where people hold tension. And as a sound healer and energy worker I see how people disconnect their voice from their body; the voice gets trapped in the head and it’s about physically moving the voice into the body and feeling the vibration.”

The brain’s primal need to stay safe prevents many of us from speaking up.

“Say someone knows what they want but they’re not expressing it, generally that’s because there are fears –familial, structural or societal- 85 percent of the

problem is the brain telling you ‘people will judge me’, fear of the unknown, fear of being seen. The brain is saying ‘I need to stay safe or I might get kicked out of the tribe.’”

Thoughts then affect the body. As soon as the brain starts sending messages the body responds, the heart rate increases, cortisol is released, the vascular system tightens, blood pressures rises and that’s why people get breathless and sweaty.

“Body affects breath, which affects the vibration, which is the energy you walk into a room with,” the sound energy practitioner said. “Your voice is physical vibration. Vocal chords vibrate against each other to create sound.

What energy do you want to take into any situation? All speaking is public speaking. The energy/vibration you go into room with is the first thing people pick up on.”

Breath is at the centre of all meditation. “When you connect to your full body it slows down the heart rate, reduces adrenaline, which sends a message to the brain that tells you: I’m safe,” Judith said. The energetic memory of stress means that if in the past speaking up was “unsafe” then we hold that in our cell memory. “Just as an opera singer can shatter glass with their voice, memory can release that emotion.”

The idea for the book came about when Judith was backpacking as a 24-year-old. “I was sitting by Lake Michigan in Chicago and thought ‘I should go to a museum’ but then I thought why? I’m traveling on my own, why should I? It got me to wondering where else do I ‘should’ in my life? I became really aware of should-ing as a concept.”

Later at age 31, Judith had gotten

quite good at not ‘should-ing’ events but she was still ‘should-ing’ life. “I was single, owned nothing, I was not being the actress I wanted to be, living in a bedsit, feeling like I had nothing but then I asked myself why do I feel like I should have all these things? A few years later I trained as a coach and I came across a room full of people who weren’t shoulding. This is still such a revelation.”

“There are some things we have to do. How can I change that response to: I want to do this?” Judith continued.

This book teaches how to transform duty to desire, how to look at the consequences of the choices we make. “It’s about making things a choice. We don’t have to do anything. I don’t have to look after my Mum’s dog for three weeks but do I want him to go to a kennel? No. I want to lose a stone in weight. I don’t have to do it; I’m not morbidly obese. So do I want that slice of chocolate cake or do I want to lose the weight?”

Another important element is if you really don’t want to do something then don’t. “If you’re trying to do the conversion from desire to duty and can’t make it –then don’t,” Judith said. “Everyone has different shoulds.

I always wanted to be an actress.

I trained, I performed but I didn’t have the career that I wanted. I felt like I should do certain things. We look at how others have done it and compare. Or sometimes you hold onto something you really used to want just to prove to people that you could do it because giving up feels like failure even if you don’t want that thing anymore.”

The first step is finding your voice. “If you don’t know what you want, then how can you express that to other

Family boppin' bunnies live on stage at bob hope theatre The Boppin’ Bunnies Christmas Music Show is coming to Eltham’s Bob Hope Theatre. It promises to be a real triumph for Eltham entrepreneur and founder Anna Mellon, who was involved in a near fatal road accident on Well Hall Road last year and is very proud of Boppin’ Bunnies after being rushed for life saving surgery by the NHS. “I honestly never thought I’d get back to the business side so positively and quickly, let alone perform on stage so comfortably,” Anna said. “I feel privileged to be in this position and can’t wait to celebrate our Christmas Show with so many local children and parents.”

It's a thirty horse

O

ne of the world’s wackiest events, the London Pantomime Horse Race, is back. We heard it straight from the horse’s mouth that this year’s is set to be the biggest and daftest event ever, writes Laura Burgoine...

Now in its ninth year, Race Day features over 30 costumed nags, dressed in the style of iconic film and TV characters. Panto-Horse teams must navigate various pit-stops and unexpected obstacles during the quarter mile street race.

Before the 1pm race, the fun gets underway at 11am with the Pre-Race Ceremony at Devonport House. The free public event, hosted by former CBeebies TV Presenter and actress Sarah-Jane Honeywell, features special guest appearances and live

music performances from X-Factor star Honey G and the UK’s leading Taylor Swift tribute act Katy Ellis.

Renowned dance troupe performers from the Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School, open the show with a film and TV-themed dance performance.

The pre-race show then takes a slightly surreal turn with a Father themed edition of the annual parody Panto Horse Dance-off contest, Strictly Neigh Dancing. Five Panto Horse teams, dressed as characters Father Ted, Bishop Brennan, Father Dougal, Mrs. Doyle and Father Jack will battle it out on the dance floor in a quest to be crowned 2018 Strictly Neigh Dancing champion. Honey G officially launches the horse Race, which finishes at Royal Hill with six refuelling pub ‘pit stops’ along the quarter-mile route. The best five performing Horse Teams will then be chosen to race on to the finish line via Space Hoppers. The team first past the winning line will

The Greenwich lantern procession and the switching on of the Market’s Christmas sparkly lights was a joyous start to the festivities on Wednesday 21 November.

Primary school children from five local schools – Invicta Blackheath and Deptford, Meridian, James Wolfe and St Matthews - led by the jazz band Tunnel Chops from Trinity Laban, proudly paraded more than 50 handmade paper lanterns depicting the story of the Nativity.

Giant size and painted, Mary with Baby Jesus, the Angel Gabriel surrounded by a host of angels, shepherds with a flock of sheep, a donkey, a Moon and stars and little Bethlehem houses followed the Star of Bethlehem through the Old Royal Naval College grounds and Cutty Sark Gardens and into the Market for the big Christmas Countdown and Lights On. Seven year-old tiny Timothy Pellegrino, a pupil from Abbeywood

School, won the chance to switch on the Greenwich Market Lights this year. Timothy said: ‘It was such fun to switch on the Greenwich Market Lights – I’m so happy I won! It really feels like Christmas now!’

The crowd were then entertained with festive tunes by the Greenwich Stagecoach young singers, followed by a trio of dance performances - ballet, tap and street - from the Angelina Jandolo Dance Showcase.

Waitrose Greenwich kindly provided mince pies to all the visitors.

Gillie Bexson, from Greenwich Hospital, the local Estate Owner and Crown Charity who sponsor the Parade and Lights on, said: “Greenwich has a creative heart.

We hope that community events like this will nurture this creativity. These children may just be our designer makers of the future. We may just see them on the Market or exhibiting in the shops of Greenwich one day.

It is such a joy to see the community come together at this time of year and

celebrate as one.”

THE GREATER LONDON AUTHORITY NOTICE UNDER ARTICLE 22 OF THE TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING (ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT) REGULATIONS 2011 (as amended) (“EIA Regulations”) PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT AT VIP TRADING ESTATE AND VIP INDUSTRIAL ESTATE, ANCHOR AND HOPE LANE, CHARLTON, SE7 7TE On 9 December 2016 a planning application (reference 16/4008/F) (the “Application”) was submitted to the Royal Borough of Greenwich (of The Woolwich Centre, 5th Floor, 35 Wellington Street, London SE18 6HQ) by Leopard Guernsey Anchor Propco Ltd (“the Applicant”) for the proposed following development at VIP Trading Estate and the VIP Industrial Estate, Anchor and Hope Lane, Charlton, SE7 7TE:

‘‘Demolition of existing buildings and erection of 11 buildings ranging from 2 to 10 storeys in height for Class C3 residential use (771 units), with flexible uses comprising Class B1 (Business), Class A1- A3 Retail / Restaurant), Class D1 (Community) and Class D2 (Leisure) at ground floor and first floor level, alterations to existing vehicular access and creation of new pedestrian access from Anchor and Hope Lane and the riverside, creation of new areas of open space and landscaping together with the provision of associated car parking, cycle spaces, refuse and recycling storage, plant and all other associated works”.

The Application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement in accordance with the EIA Regulations.

On 13 August 2018, the Mayor of London (of City Hall, the Queens Walk, London, SE1 2AA) issued a direction under Section 2A of the Greater London Authority Act in accordance with Article 7 of the Town and Country Planning (Mayor of London) Order 2008 order that he will act as the Local Planning Authority for the purposes of determining the Application. Subsequent to that direction, the Applicant has submitted to the Mayor of London revisions to the Application.

The revisions make amendments to plans and planning documents submitted as part of the Application, and include: the reduction in height of Building G by two storeys and the introduction of a setback storey, to create part three, part four storey building; the reduction in height of two storeys of Building J to five storeys; the increase in height of Building D by one storey to ten storeys; the increase in height of Buildings E and F by one storey to part eight, part nine and part ten storeys; the quantum of flexible commercial/retail floorspace increased from 3,201 to 3,250 sq.m.

(GEA); a reduction of two car parking spaces; the increase in cycle parking provision to 1,400 spaces; the relocation of the car park entrance to the north east of Plot A; and the relocation of residential entrances of Building F to be accessed from the east-west link. The amendments do not seek to alter the quantum of residential units (771) or the quantum of community floorspace (909 sq.m. GEA) originally proposed, but alter the residential mix resulting in a reduction of four studio units; an increase of two one bedroom units and five two bedroom units; and the reduction of one three bed unit and the two four bedroom units.

The Applicant has also submitted to the Mayor of London other information under Regulation 22 of the EIA Regulations in relation to the Environmental Statement which accompanied the Application.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Network Rail who need to carry out Railway works and removal of the footbridge.

2. The Order will come into operation on 16th December at 7am and will continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 24 hours. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.
