he Greenwich & Lewisham Weekender is an independent weekly newspaper, covering the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham.

Light up the night with a lantern that will be a part of the winter parade in Eltham this November.

The second of two workshops will be on November 10, free to those who attend, for people to make lanterns for the Eltham High Street Parade.

The lanterns will be released as a part of the parade. This year the theme is Twelve Days of Christmas. The festival is on 15 November.

The workshop will be on 10 November 11am to 2pm.

IT’S ALIVE! Join the Deptford Cinema for a film series that celebrates the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s immortal classic, Frankenstein. The cinema is playing the ‘weirdest, wackiest and most bizarre’ adaptations of the story, including Frankenstein Unbound – a tale of time travel.

Marcus Brigstocke “Devil May Care” tour – first show in Blackheath after renovations C

omedic mastermind Marcus Brigstocke will open the Blackheath Halls after its £3 million renovation project for a night of insight, satire and Satan, writes Hannah Kanik...

Marcus says: “I’ll be fully devilled up, complete with horns, tail and malevolent grin. I want to explore the nature of good and bad.”

His dialogue comes from Lucifer himself, however Marcus says the content is more in line with the angel he used to be, like being forgiving and kind to one another.

He said that modern day man suffers from associating people with opinions opposite your own as ‘bad.’

With digital communication opening the door for hate to spread faster than before, he reminds audiences to be kinder to one another.

Those who have been long-time fans of Marcus will be able to see his stand-up in a whole new way.

Marcus said: “I wanted to have a look at the way I do stand up from a whole new perspective. That and it’s a huge amount of fun.”

Marcus has been on tour since September and plans to add more shows next year as well, because playing the Devil is ‘too much fun to stop now.’

This show will be one of the first shows in the newly renovated Blackheath Halls. The venue had been closed since May and will be opening back up this November.

The project took six months and £3 million to complete.

The stage was remodelled to accommodate a wider variety of shows and the seats were updated to be more comfortable.

There were changes made to the foyer and the café bar as well.

Marcus has had a long residency in television and radio, including his roles in Argumental, The Late Edition and I’ve Never Seen Star Wars. He also appeared on Live from the Apollo, Have I Got News For You and many others.

In radio, he has been a frequent guest in I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, The Now Show and Just a Minute.

These galleries investigate the British and European exploration from the late-fifteenth century to present day and how Britain’s relationship with the sea shaped the country as a whole.

The galleries, Tudor and Stuart Seafarers, Pacific Encounters, Polar Worlds and Sea Things, officially opened on 20 September.

The Tudor and Stuart Seafarers gallery will ‘uncover stories of adventure, piracy, ambition and greed.’ Here, visitors will find everything from portraits to ship

replicas to maps and globes.

Polar Worlds will explore the impact of extreme environments on human lives, from Arctic to Antarctic landscapes. This dramatic white-walled gallery gives the illusion of being within the polar environment as you uncover how humans adapted to the inhabitable weather.

The Pacific Encounters gallery will investigate the world’s largest ocean and the ‘hidden histories of exploration and exploitation’ surrounding it. On display you will find life size boats and the rich history of Pacific islanders.

Sea Things will link the ocean to personal stories to uncover what the sea means to you. Boat replicas, ocean and sea themed toys and more are on display here.

Alice’s winter Wonderland

Organiser Marcus Van Der Gaag described the experience as “immersive.” “There’s a giant chess board, there’s 162 lanterns, between one and seven metres high, and 35 of them are animatronics; their arms and eyes move.”

Alice fans can spy a jabberwocky in the tree, chat to the Cheshire cat, and follow Alice down the rabbit hole.

“Everyone else has always put a Chinese theme on lantern events but Alice in Wonderland is a very English brand, which everyone loves and relates to,” Marcus said.

The organisers worked with local school children who recorded their voices to be played throughout the trail. You can hear students from the Harris Academy, Sacred Heart and Bosco Centre narrating stories along the way. Local school children are also performing Christmas songs on the bandstand.

The event is setting up in the northern section while east and west parts of the park are open during the

day, and there’s a path with barriers around it through the middle of Wonderland where people can walk throughout the day.

The entire walk is 900 metres long with a food and drink stop halfway.

The first half is themed around Alice through the Looking Glass and the second half is Alice in Wonderland.

The lantern trail finishes at the bandstand, opening out to a Santa’s Grotto, a sleigh ride and 20 stalls with one bar, six food stands, Christmas shops, and a teacup ride.

All lights are switched off at 11pm

After dark, the park is being lit up with twinkle lights as 35 handmade lanterns of Lewis Carrol’s famous characters bring the quintessentially British tale to life.

obin Hood and Maid Marion are making their way to Peckham.

This Christmas, Theatre Peckham unveils a reimagined adaptation on the popular children’s classic. Robin Hood: The Arrow Of Destiny is the new artistic director Suzann McLean’s inaugural production since joining in September.

“Robin Hood was a show I codirected at York Theatre Royal and I had lots of young people in that show,” Suzann told the Weekender.

“The writer Richard has rewritten it to make it fit with Christmas and it ends with a big Christmas tree on stage.”

The story begins deep in a long, hungry winter, with villagers of Nottingham who need a hero. As Maid Marian journeys deep into Sherwood Forest to find the arrowshooting adventurer, there’s lots of thrills and surprises along the way.

The production sees Malachi Green, former alumni of the youth theatre, cast in the lead role as Robin, making his professional debut stage performance. “I walked into the theatre one day and Malachi was perched on the reception desk

and I thought ‘you’re Robin Hood.’

Then I auditioned him and all my initial thoughts were right,” Suzann said.

Professor Brian Cox adds show at the O2 for Universal: Adventures in Space and Time tour

rofessor Brian Cox’s Universal: Adventures in Space and Time 2019 tour has added an additional show at The O2 due to high demand for tickets, writes Hannah Kanik...

Professor Cox, of the University of Manchester, will lead a visual journey through time and space using high resolution images taken from ground based telescopes and space probes.

Brian will dazzle audiences with state of the art graphics and imagery using ultra-high resolution LED screens to tell the story of the solar system and the universe as a whole.

Audiences will be able to take a visual trip around and back into a black hole through imagery created by the visual effects team responsible for the black hole in the movie Interstellar.

Brian will make ‘challenging ideas accessible to all’ and engage every level of space explorer.

He said: “30 meter-wide images from the Hobble Space Telescope are certainly something to behold.

“On this new tour, I’m going to go a step further with the technology, to the horror of my promoter because it’ll be bloody expensive. But it’ll be bloody spectacular as well, and I hope it’ll offer people a completely new perspective on our place in the Universe.”

Brian will be joined by award winning comedian Robin Ince to oversee an audience question and answer session.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Royal Borough of Greenwich who need to carry out Tree works.

2. The Order will come into operation on the 14th November 2018 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take until the 31st March 2019. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Goosander Way between Whinchat Road and Broadwater Road. As well as to temporarily prohibit vehicles from waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Whinchat Road Between Goosander Way and Warepoint Drive.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Broadwater Road, Tom Cribb Road, Pettman Crescent, Western Way, Battery Road, Merbury Road, Warepoint Drive, Whinchat Road and Vice Versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
