FOLK DUO OF THE YEAR John Tams and Barry Coope return to Cutty Sark to celebrate six decades of musicianship. John is the award-winning composer behind the score for hit stage show War Horse and the TV series Sharpe. Barry is a gifted accompanist and singer, formerly of Coope, Boyes and Simpson, the celebrated acapella trio.

Together, John and Barry won the BBC Folk Awards Duo of the Year award in 2008.

Everything you need to know about the eighteenth annual Shakespeare Schools Festival N

ow in its 18th year, the nation-wide Shakespeare Schools Festival is the largest youth drama festival in the world, working with around 30,000 pupils across 300 performances each autumn.

The Weekender’s Holly O’Mahony spoke to CEO of Shakespeare Schools Festival Ruth Brock, to find out more about the festival, and Artistic and Executive Director of Greenwich Theatre James Haddrell, to hear what’s happening locally.

How the festival began...

Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF) began in 2000 in a small town theatre in Wales, with just 240 pupils from eight different schools taking part.

“Our founders Chris Grace and Penelope Middelboe had been working on BBC Education’s Animated Tales,” explains Ruth. “Chris and Penelope thought that, if children loved Shakespeare by watching the animations, how much better would it be if they performed?”

Using the child-friendly scripts from Animated Tales, the festival founders and teachers from participating schools put together the inaugural festival at Torch Theatre in Milford Haven – which also happens to be where Shakespeare’s Cymbeline is set. “Since then, the festival has become the world’s largest youth drama project, with up to 30,000 primary, secondary and special educational needs pupils from nearly 1,000 schools taking part every year.”

Greenwich Theatre has been a part of SSF since its second year. “When I joined the theatre in 2001 as press officer, one of my first tasks was promoting the festival,” recalls James.

“We participated in a West End launch with Samuel West. Pupils from Kidbrooke School took part in that launch, and the school [now Halley Academy] has had a strong performing arts focus ever since.”

Recruiting schools to participate…

over the years, SSF also runs a team dedicated to reaching out to new schools and relaying the benefits of being involved with the festival.

“We are always delighted when new schools join the project,” says James. Schools from the borough of Greenwich that are involved this year include: Boxgrove Primary performing Romeo and Juliet, Kidbrooke Park Primary performing Henry V, Morden Mount Primary School taking on Julius Caesar, Eltham Hill Secondary School staging Macbeth and Linton Mead Primary lightening the mood with a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

“The Festival is an eight-month process, from signing-up to the final performance night,” explains Ruth. “Teachers are supported by their Coordinator throughout

the experience and are given a day of CPD with experts from the world of theatre.”

Students, meanwhile, are given a half-day workshop with other schools in the local area to help them prepare for the final performance. “The workshops and the performance nights bring together primary, secondary and special educational needs schools on the same stage, and are a great opportunity for students of different backgrounds and abilities to integrate,” Ruth says.

Choosing the texts…

Around 20 of Shakespeare’s plays – a range of comedies, tragedies, histories and problem plays – are being performed in the 2018 festival. Schools are allowed to choose which play they want

to perform from SSF’s collection of specially-adapted scripts. “The most popular are Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest,” Ruth reveals. “In abridging the plays, we have kept Shakespeare’s original language, but we encourage schools to stage the plays in any way that they like,” she says.

“Sometimes schools choose plays which fit in with subjects they’re studying at the time,” adds James.

“If they are long time participants in the festival, they make their way through the plays on offer.”

The rehearsal process…

Each participating school is responsible for holding its own audition and rehearsal process, with a teacher volunteering to take the lead in directing the show. “I go to see some of the shows in

rehearsal and give advice where it’s wanted or needed to help the young companies get their shows ready to take to the stage at Greenwich Theatre,” explains James.

The challenges…

Producing SSF each year does not happen without its challenges, much of which are financial constraints. “We hear from teachers that due to constraints to budgets and the challenges of teaching, schools are under greater pressure than ever before,” says Ruth. “We are a charity and work hard to raise one million pounds each year so that we can subsidise the costs for schools taking part,” she adds. “Inclusivity is central to our work, and we want to ensure that as many schools as possible are able to get involved.”

of deprivation, which the organisation believes have the most to gain from a creative arts project.” All proceeds raised from ticket sales go back into SSF’s pot for future work.

Results...

Traditionally, staging Shakespeare in schools was praised for its ability to improve literacy and academic attainment.

But SSF have found many more benefits besides. “For 400 years, Shakespeare’s wide-ranging themes have taught us all more about what it means to be human,” points out Ruth. “The Festival provides a safe space for young p eople to think creatively about some of the challenges they might be facing in their own lives,” she says. “By taking on something as challenging as performing Shakespeare on a real stage, young people learn just how much they can achieve. It raises aspirations, broadens horizons and sends confidence soaring.”

The proof is in the pudding. Research into the festival conducted by Arts Council England last year found 93% of students said that they found it easier to work in a team, while 90% of teachers said their students were more enthusiastic about learning as a result of taking part in the festival; 86% reported higher academic attainment; and 99% agreed that their students’ confidence had increased.

James agrees, pointing out the festival is also an opportunity for students to get a broad introduction into the various theatre-related careers that exist. “Not only acting, but directing, lighting, sound and design,” he says. “They also emerge from performing with a huge sense of achievement, boosted confidence, and an improved ability to express themselves and communicate with large groups of people.” Plus, the festival provides an opportunity for participants to make friends with children from different classes and year groups.

“In giving young people across the UK new experiences, whether they are top of the class or need that extra support and encouragement, we know that the festival has the power to transform lives,” says Ruth. “Young people have the chance to be ambitious, to join in and be part of something bigger, which we all know is key for whatever path we choose in life.”

Remember, Remember: Blackheath fireworks display T

he annual fireworks display on Blackheath is taking place on Saturday November 3 this year. One of few major unticketed displays in London, the funfair will start at 12pm, while food stalls and bars will open at 5pm, and the 15-minute display itself will begin at 8pm, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Blackheath’s fireworks have been delighting local residents

as well as those from further afield for over 30 years. Run by Lewisham Council, the display started in Ladywell and later moved to Blackheath around the 1990s. Rarely has it been called off over that time.

“We start planning months in advance,” says Liz Crook, Marketing Communications Officer for Lewisham Council.

“When you have thousands of people arriving you need enough facilities – we’ve got lots of toilets and bins arriving on the heath,

never fear!”

For Liz and the team at Lewisham Council, keeping the display ticket-free is the best way to ensure everyone can come and enjoy the fireworks each year. “It is hugely important to us that the whole community can enjoy the display and holding an organised event is a great way for families to enjoy a really spectacular show, safely,” she says. “It’s expensive to put on the event, so we still need donations from visitors to help it

happen each year. People can donate on the night in buckets or online.”

So, how to make the most of the event? “Get there early!” cautions Liz, who points out that with foot-long frankfurters, pizza, jerk chicken, beers and various glow in the dark accessories, there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy.

“The fireworks display helps to raise the profile of our beautiful part of south east London; it’s an aerial display, it can be seen for

miles around.” says Liz, adding that it’s a great excuse for local residents to get together with their neighbours and celebrate Guy Fawkes Night together.

Childish Gambino headlines the o2 Recording artist, actor and producer Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, is performing at the O2 on Sunday November 4, joined by a special guest: the American singer H.E.R. The performance marks Glover’s first live show in the UK for five years, writes Holly O’Mahony...

It seems there’s no stopping the Grammy, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning Glover.

In 2018 alone he released the hugely successful single ‘This Is America’, which debuted at number one in the US charts and quickly became one of the most political and discussed music videos in recent history.

Glover’s TV and film career has been ablaze lately.

He directed and acted in his own award-winning comedy series Atlanta (2015), starred as Lando Calrissian in the space-age spaghetti western, Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), and has even been confirmed as the voice of Simba in the upcoming Lion King remake in 2019.

Glover was also named one of Time Magazine’s 100

most influential people in the world in 2017.

Speaking to the Guardian, Glover referenced a broad range of musical influences, including American rock bands LCD Soundsystem and Rage Against the Machine, the rapper Ghostface Killah, and French electronic duo Justice. “People want to experience something physical,” the performer said of watching a live gig, also citing hip

hop duo Outcast and funk band Funkadelic as influential on his music.

SPECTACULAR, SPECTACULAR The 15th annual fireworks night returns to Southwark Park with food and drink stalls, entertainment and a fireworks show “uniquely synchronised to music.”

This year promises to be “spectacular” according to Cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities Cllr Rebecca Lury who said “ I hope to see as many local people and families taking advantage of their free tickets and enjoying this year’s wonderful community event.”

The first display starts at 6:45pm, choreographed to the soundtracks of family friendly movies the Greatest Showman, Frozen, Moana and Trolls.

The second display, the Time Tunnel, starts at 8pm and features singalongs to ‘80s hits and modern day music, with artists ranging from Whitney Houston to Ed Sheeran.

A MUSICAL REVIVAL OF FOLLIES COMES TO THE CHURCHILL THEATRE S

tephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s 1971 musical Follies recently enjoyed a sellout revival at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank. The production, which ran from late 2017 till early 2018, was directed

by Dominic Cooke and starred Imelda Staunton among other names. The production won the 2018 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and is already booked to return to the National in 2019.

Bringing the magic of Follies to the Churchill Theatre this week is the West Wickham Operatic Society (WWOS), writes Holly O’Mahony...

Set in a crumbling New York theatre in 1971, Follies sees a troupe of ex-showgirls reunite and take to the stage for a final performance, accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves, before the iconic theatre is due to be demolished the following day. With unhappy marriages, wistful memories and big desires rife, there’s still everything to play, sing and dance for.

“The Follies girls of the past meet up for one last time to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves,”

jokes Kevin Gauntlett, artistic director of WWOS. “Follies is a show that is seldom performed.

The National had a sell-out, successful run last year [and the production is making] a return next year,” he says.”

Each production is different and WWOS’s production is well on its way to being Bromley’s very own spectacular revival.”

Directing a production on Follies has been an ambition of Kevin’s for many years. “Not only does it have this wonderful story, it also features some of Sondheim’s best songs including ‘Broadway Baby’, ‘I’m Still Here’ and ‘Losing My Mind’,” he says.

“Like most Sondheim shows, it makes you think and has some high dramatic moments.”

WWOS was founded over 80 years ago in 1935. During their first 25 years as a company, their repertoire was drawn solely from Gilbert and Sullivan, and English musical comedy, but in 1961 the musical comedy element was replaced by classical European operetta, with modern musicals eventually joining the mix in 1986. Today, the company has an acting membership of approximately 75, and produces a musical production each spring and autumn at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley.

at the Churchill, almost 40 years ago in 1979, was Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. Kevin, who has been a member of WWOS for as long as he can remember, acted in that first production. “Since then we have performed over 75 productions, ranging from the operatic shows such as The Merry Widow and The Pirates of Penzance, to the traditional musicals such as Oklahoma! and My fair Lady, and the more modern shows such as Legally Blonde, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Cats,” he recalls.

For WWOS, the production process begins about a year before the show will make it onto the stage. “It begins with choosing a production team, sourcing scenery and costumes, booking rehearsal venues and then the auditions,” Kevin explains. “We cast the show before the summer break and then begin rehearsals at the beginning of September.”

Now old hands at making it all come together, the rehearsal process for Follies has been good fun according to Kevin.

“Rehearsals have been wonderful; learning and studying

Sondheim’s amazing score and rehearsing in groups before bringing it together in the final weeks,” he says. “It’s fascinating watching the production evolve through the rehearsals, peaking just in time for our performances.”

For Kevin, a highlight of any WWOS production is the theatre get-in day, when the company move from the rehearsal space at Wickham Theatre Centre to the Churchill Theatre, where the show will be performed. “This is when we finally see everything come together,” he says.

“The company, the scenery, the costumes, the lighting, the wonderful full professional orchestra and then the show. It’s one big team effort.”

After a five-year hiatus from the stage, Alan Bennett returned in the summer of 2018 with a new play Allelujah!.

Marking Bennett’s tenth collaboration with Bridge Theatre founder and artistic director Nicholas Hytner, who directs the play, Allelujah! is a poignant ode to the NHS, with a dramatic subplot and all the right elements to make it as timeless as the rest of Bennett’s repertoire, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Bennett has had an extraordinary career. He’s written 23 plays, 33 books, scripts for 19 films, and a sizeable amount for television

and radio, too. The playwright, screenwriter and author wrote an essay in 1989 called The Lady in the Van, based on his experiences with an eccentric woman called Miss Shepherd living – uninvited – in a van on his driveway. In 1999, Bennett adapted the piece into a screenplay starring Maggie Smith, then into a film in 2015, which saw Smith reprise her role and Bennett play himself.

Bennett’s critically acclaimed play The History Boys won three Laurence Olivier Awards in 2005 and was adapted for the screen in 2006, with many of the original stage cast – including Richard Griffiths and Dominic Cooper – playing their same roles on screen. In an interview with the Guardian, Hytner, who directed The

History Boys both on stage and screen, described Allelujah! as similar to The History Boys but with over-80s.

Allelujah! is set on the geriatric ward of ‘The Beth’ hospital in Yorkshire, where its staff – led by chairman of the hospital trust Salter (Peter Forbes) – are fighting to save the institution from looming NHS cuts. The staff have enlisted the help of a TV crew to film the elderly patients sing in a choir together, and ultimately present the cosy hospital as an asset to the local community and indeed the health service at large.

Former miner Joe (Jeff Rawle) is a rude, senile patient on one of the hospital’s wards. With a visit from his son Colin (Samuel Barnett, a former History Boys

cast member) – a management consultant working for the health ministry in London – comes an argument in favour of closing The Beth, based on the Tory-led narrative that hospitals seeing citizens from the cradle to the grave is pure sentimentalism. But a dramatic end to the first act turns what initially appears to be a political play about the privatisation of the NHS into a crime thriller, as the audience learns one nurse doesn’t have her patients’ best interests at heart.

Allelujah! is peppered with wonderfully surreal moments – such as when the virtually immobile patients rise from their wheelchairs to sing and dance to music-hall era songs, including moving renditions of ‘A, You’re Adorable’ and ‘Love

and Marriage’. Meanwhile Bennett’s quick-witted oneliners prove that at 84,the playwright and former actor is still as sharp and savvy as ever.

Bennett makes affectionate jests at stereotypical pensioner traits, but the emotive bursts of raw, a cappella singing – most notably the striking opening sequence in which dementia-ridden Mrs Maudsley (Jacqueline Clarke) sings alone on the bare stage – pull on the heartstrings. Meanwhile the tense familial relationship between Joe and Colin tears through the play’s humour, laying bare a shift in ideologies between the two generations post-Thatcher.

Since launching in 2009 (with a broadcast of the National Theatre’s production of Phèdre, starring Helen Mirren), NT Live has broadcast more than forty productions in roughly 2,000 venues around the world – 650 of which are in the UK. for the traditionally Irish bacon and cabbage. “Now remember, if you want more gravy, you only have to ask for it,” says Tom. “There’s no hidden charges here,” a statement that’s music to our ears. In fact, the Green Pea is purse-friendly dining through and through, not least of all because it’s BYOB for wine.

The steak and Guinness pie comes with chips that are clearly home-cooked (hurrah!) and roast potatoes (double win!), while a sharing plate of no frills carrots, broccoli and cabbage is placed between us.

The stake contents within the pie are generous, the pastry thick and soft. Meanwhile the addition of mustard to the pie’s sauce gives it a sharp tang that’s a little overbearing, but certainly original. My companion’s ham, which I stole several mouthfuls of, is perfect – a word I don’t use lightly.

Juicy and salty, it practically dissolves in the mouth.

Having sat within eyeline of the restaurant’s glass counter of desserts, it would have been unthinkable to leave without sampling some. The warm chocolate fudge cake – a staple of any good pudding menu – came served with vanilla ice cream and was pure comfort in a prettily decorated ceramic bowl, but could have benefited from a few less seconds in the microwave.

The banana crunch, which also came served with vanilla scoop, is the sort of homemade pudding where all of its components sit together yet somehow remain their own separate entities: thick slices of banana lie layered on a biscuit base, drizzled in lemon juice and coated in Greek yogurt cream. It was tasty, but didn’t quite come together somehow.

Gazing round the restaurant (which at 1pm was now full) in a post-roast slump, my eyes fell on trinkets I hadn’t noticed before. ‘Today’s menu: take it or leave it’ read a sign hanging from a nearby shelf.

n one of the first cold and wet Sundays of the season, my companion and I found ourselves in need of a hearty roast lunch, ideally in a homeaway-from-home setting (because, we all need a weekend away from the faff of preparing roasties from time to time). I’d been tipped off that the Green Pea – a short walk from Maze Hill Station – serves one of the best roasts around, so we booked a table to find out if it lived up to its reputation, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The restaurant is instantly spottable on Trafalgar Road; its exteriors are a mass of green upon green, from the paintwork to the flowerpots. Seriously, you can’t miss it. I should mention here that the Green Pea became a bit of an overnight sensation back in 2014, when its glowing Trip Advisor ratings saw it climb the ranks to become the seventh best restaurant in London – just one spot below the three Michelinstarred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea. Soon, the regulars found themselves joined by London gourmets and tourists from further afield, all curious to sample the Green Pea’s highly acclaimed pub grub.

As soon as we step inside the Green Pea I’m transported back to childhood holidays in Kerry, south-west Ireland.

Warmly-coloured tiles line the floors, joining with exposed red brick walls. Functional sets of wooden tables and chairs are dressed with dated floral mats, while cuttley is already laid in anticipation of guests yet to appear. Interesting artifacts belonging to a bygone era decorate the surfaces and walls, including old books, even older paintings, and a miniature statue of a green and cream

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) on 29th October 2018 made the above-mentioned Order under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. 2. The effect of the Order will be on an experimental basis: (a) to prohibit all vehicles from entering the gap in the central reservation that separates the northbound and southbound carriageways of

Millennium Way located opposite Old School Close; and (b) in connection with the no entry restriction referred to in sub-paragraph (a) above, to introduce a compulsory left turn for all vehicles

from Old School Close into Millennium Way. [Note: a temporary physical obstruction would be installed to prevent vehicle access to the gap in the central reservation of Millennium Way referred to above] 3. The Order provides that in pursuance of section 10(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the Assistant Director of Strategic Transportation at Greenwich Council, or some person authorised by him, may, if it appears to him or that person essential in the interests of the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of traffic or for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which any road affected by the Order extends, modify or suspend the Order or any provision thereof.

5. The Order and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Order are available for inspection during normal office hours until

the Order cease to have effect at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 6. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Order or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Order was made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

7. The Council will consider in due course whether the provisions of the Order should be continued in force indefinitely by means of a permanent Order made under section 6 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Any person may object to the making of the permanent Order for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on which the experimental Order comes into force or, if the Order is varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the 1984 Act, beginning with the date on which

the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification comes into force.
