South East London meccano club holds 40th annual show

D

o you remember Meccano – the model construction system that involved using metal plates, wheels, nuts, bolts and axles to create your own miniature mechanical device? writes Holly O’Mahony...

It was invented back in 1901 by Frank Hornby in Liverpool. While it maintained its popularity for much of the 20th century, by the 1930s interlocking bricks known as Lego came on the scene, offering an alternative for those less focused on mechanics, more intent on simply building a model replica of something. Today, of course, equivalent activities exist inside apps and other forms of technology accessed via a tablet, smartphone or other digital device. But Meccano is still alive and well in south east London.

In fact, the South East London Meccano Club (SELMEC) is

holding its 40th Annual Meccano show in Eltham on Saturday October 27.

It all began for SELMEC back in January 1976, when the club’s founder, Chris Warrell, held an inaugural meeting in his parents’ house, for which eight people were present; some of whom are still SELMEC members today.

Subsequent meetings were held in St. Luke’s Church Hall in Eltham, then the Salvation Army Hall in Welling once the church hall felt too cramped. Within a couple of years, the club was well established and a pattern formed

in which four quarterly meetings were held every year.

The club held its first public exhibition in 1979, an event which saw a turnout of nearly 400 visitors, surprising the 16 members of the club at the time.

“All our members turned up with models along with a number of modellers from other clubs,” said Chris Warrell, in a post about the club’s history on the SELMEC website. “Of the 366 visitors who paid the sum of 20p or 10p for entry, fifteen decided to join the club that day, almost doubling our membership in an instant!”

SELMEC became actively involved with the biennial Meccano exhibition at the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden in the winter of 1983.

The models remained on display there for a week over Christmas and New Year, attracting attention from the BBC, which led to a oneoff filming of the BBC Breakfast show there.

For Tim Surtell, who now runs the Meccano Show, a recent SELMEC highlight coincided with the 2012 Olympic Games.

“We decided to run our own MeccanOlymipcs at the Meccano

Show, with events like the Push of War and Ping Pong Put,” he recalls. “Then in 2014 we had our own version of the Tour de France, complete with yellow and green jerseys for the winners.”

Tim has been a member of SELMEC since he was 12 years old, and for a long time was the club’s youngest member. He’s exhibited at most of the Meccano events since then, today running the website, the London Meccano Club Events Guide and many of their other events held throughout the year.

“One of my favourite things is helping children discover Meccano for the first time,” says Tim. “We run a Make It With Meccano workshop at our events where we provide parts and instructions for simple models, and it’s great seeing how children use their imagination to build on from these models to create their own unique designs.” The children then have the chance to enter the show’s Meccano Creative Challenge, where prizes are awarded for the best models built over the course of the day.

Fast forward to 2018 and on Saturday October 27, the 40th annual Meccano Show is being held in Eltham United Reformed Church – the site of the club’s initial meetings, where they’ve been based again since 2004.

The event is a chance to browse models of cars, cranes, trains and more, all built entirely from Meccano. It’s also an opportunity to buy Meccano parts from dealers, build your own model and be entered into the Meccano Creative Challenge – with a chance of winning a prize.

“This show will bring back childhood memories for parents and grandparents, as Meccano was once one of Britain’s most popular toys,” points out Tim. “For kids, it will be a great way to learn about science, mechanics and engineering, by seeing what can be made with Meccano parts, and by building their own models.”

Vivaldi's works for women musicians: Blackheath International Chamber Music Festival

A

ntonio Vivaldi is known for his works The Four Seasons, which he composed in the 1720s, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Less known is the fact the Italian composer spent a large part of his career working at an orphanage called La Pietà in Venice where, somewhat unusually, girls were given an extensive musical education. As a result, much of the music Vivaldi composed was performed by the girls and young women of the orphanage. Here to bring several of Vivalidi’s best-loved compositions to Blackheath – including The Four Seasons and two other concertos which were performed by female pupils at the orphanage in Vivaldi’s day – is Blackheath International Chamber Music Festival.

The Four Seasons and Vivaldi’s works for women musicians’ is the opening gala concert of the festival, which is now in its third biennial edition.

“We believe in promoting equality, so there are works by women composers integrated in almost every concert of the festival,” says one of the concert’s solo violinists and co-founder of the festival Lana Trotovsek.

“I always had a special spark with chamber music,” says Lana, who was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, into a musical family. Lana has performed all over the world as a soloist, playing solo concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Philharmonic

among other orchestras. Blackheath is now home for Lana. Together with flautist Boris Bizjak, she established the festival as a way of contributing to the Blackheath community, bringing local and international musicians together for concerts at All Saints’ Church.

“The Four Seasons are definitely amongst the most popular classical music compositions,” Lana says.

“Nowadays we get so many different, unconventional interpretations of the piece. It is a challenge for the performer to create a new and fresh interpretation but also a liberation, knowing there are so many possibilities,” explains the soloist, who moved to London thirteen years ago to study at the Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban, where she now also teaches. “The solo part is of course demanding but the ensemble’s job accompanying the soloist isn’t easy either,” she says. “They are constantly in conversation with the solo violin part, so I like to think of it as chamber music where all the parts are equal.”

‘70s blues trio Rubber Johnny make a comeback T

hose who were around to enjoy the south east London music scene of the ‘70s and ‘80s might recall the band Rubber Johnny. Formed in 1978, with John Turner as the band’s frontman, Rubber Johnny originally grouped to fill the gap between the various punk and reggae bands performing at the Rock

against Racism concerts at the Albany theatre in Deptford, wites Holly O’Mahony...

A blues trio, John along with fellow musicians Joe Reed and John White brought something totally different to the live music scene.

The band were inspired musically by the greats of blues and R&B, but focused on writing and performing their own music

to tell the story of south east London and its characters.

“Obviously we wanted to do what we could to support the multi-racial community,” reflects John Turner.

Rubber Johnny’s interval set became so popular the band were offered a residency at the Deptford Arms and went on to play the Marquee, The Nashville Rooms, The Rock Garden and The 100 Club, before retiring

in 1983. Now, 35 years later, Rubber Johnny have regrouped – but not as a tribute act to their past. The band insist their music comes in response to the world around us in 2018. The revived band is performing at Greenwich Theatre on October 26 and 27.

“Musically, we’re letting a bit of psychedelia into our blues,” says John, describing the music of the new band – which

consists of the original trio plus three new members: Ralph Winkler, Steve Silverton and les Morgan. We’re back in south east London but we’re looking forward, not back.”

Churchill Theatre reveals all for The Full Monty

S

imon Beaufoy’s 1997 film The Full Monty, directed by Peter Cattaneo, is up there with the greatest British films of all time, writes Holly O’Mahony...

It won the BAFTA Award for Best Film in 1998, was nominated for several Academy Awards that same year and was the highest-grossing film in the UK until it was outsold by Titanic. Not only is it a feel-good comedy, loved and laughed at in houses across the UK, The Full Monty touches on serious matters including unemployment, homosexuality, body image, depression and working class culture.

The Full Monty was adapted into a musical in 2000 by Terrence McNally (with a score

by David Yazbek), before Beaufoy himself adapted it into a play in 2013. A tour of Beaufoy’s stage version is currently making its way around the UK and Ireland, dropping into the Churchill Theatre to reveal all between October 22 - 27.

(played by Gary Lucy on stage) who, together with pal Dave (Kai Owen), decides to create his own male strip-tease act in a final bid to make some money. The pair recruit more men, most of whom are also former steel factory employees in search for work, convinced their show will be a success because they’re willing to go ‘the full monty’ – aka, completely naked.

The cast also features Andrew Dunn as Gerald, Louis Emerick as Horse, Joe Gill as Lomper, and James Redmond as Guy. Following its run at the Churchill Theatre, The Full Monty tour will continue making its way around the UK, finishing in Sheffield – home of the story – in 2019.

The current touring production of The Full Monty is being directed by Rupert Hill, who previously played the part of Guy in the show two years ago.

“At the time, I let it be known to the producers that I had directed a few short films and one low budget feature with my production company Manchester Independent Collective [MIC Films], and David Pugh, TFM’s producer, saw these and liked them,” Rupert recalls. The

director’s acting days aren’t over just yet, though. Rupert is preparing to leave the tour for a couple of months to act in a production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman at the Royal Exchange in Manchester.

Fans of the film can rest assured the stage adaptation loses none of its charm.

“Beaufoy’s script is absolutely brilliant in either format,” says Rupert. “[The play] is pretty loyal to the film, although some of the characters are further explored and the ending, I think, is improved on stage because the audience become part of the show.” Many of the film’s muchloved songs by artists including Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones have also been carried over the the stage production to help set the tone.

The tour of The Full Monty has not been without its hurdles.

“We’ve had a near broken leg, a totally ruined voice and many sleepless nights,” laughs Rupert.

“And that’s just the stuff I’m prepared to tell you…”

The bumps along the way have payed off, though. “The reviews all seem to be mentioning how it isn’t just a raucous striptease

of a show and that themes about poverty, sexual identity and conservative politics are resonating in the production,” notes Rupert. “Also we’ve pretty much had a standing ovation every night so far,” he smiles.

“That’s a wonderful thing. I’m very lucky to captain such a wonderful team.”

The Full Monty is showing at the Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley BR1 1HA, from October 22 - 27, at 7:30pm and additionally at 2:30pm on Saturday 27.

Wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff O

n the last Sunday of every month, Deptford Cinema runs its SciFi Sundays programme.

Described as a chance to ‘delve into wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, Earthly welcomes, post-Earths, new flesh and everything in between,’ it’s a chance for local enthusiasts of the genre to go knee-deep into the world of science fiction, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The films have been divided into quarterly themes, with ‘time’ taking the first 2018/19 slot. Within it, the first screening of the new season – showing on October 28 – is Terry Gilliam’s 1995 film Twelve Monkeys.

The story of Twelve Monkeys takes place in the year 2035, where prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) is chosen to travel back in time to 1996, to gather information on a deadly virus which has forced humanity to emigrate underground.

But when Cole accidentally travels back further to 1990, finding himself in the company of mental patient Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) and Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe), he’s forced to wonder whether he’s really from the future or has in fact lost his mind. The

film received critical acclaim and became a box office hit on its release in 1996, and Pitt received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Twelve Monkeys holds a new relevance today, though, in a time when fake news is an increasing cause for concern.

“To start the season we really

wanted to go with [a film] well known and well liked,” says Sam Taylor, a Deptford Cinema volunteer and programmer of the season. “Twelve Monkeys stood out as fitting that criteria perfectly; it’s big enough to draw a good audience and most importantly is a great film.” This is, in large part, thanks to Gilliam’s skill at creating

on-screen immersive futures, which Sam describes as being grimy and dirty dystopian worlds.

“He’s a very visual director and the way he depicts technology is very exciting – it’s a world away from the sleek technology that used to be so prevalent in sci-fi,” explains Sam. “He’s also a great director of actors; Bruce Willis really is giving the performance of his career in this film.”

The cinema’s Sci-Fi Sundays came about following a weekly meeting, where the team realised their shared enthusiasm for the genre. They decided the season would need to be split into themes, to help sub-categorise it given its wide breadth. “We initially came up with a huge number of potential themes and started compiling potential films for each one,” recalls Sam. “We ended up with four years’ worth of ideas,” he laughs.

The team decided to begin with a year-long programme, splitting the films up between four themes, with three screenings in each.

“Time was always a frontrunner – there’s something about the idea of time travel that lends itself to exciting filmmaking, and the sheer number of good films we had in this category far outweighed the rest,” Sam says. “There’s usually

a wonderful sense of mystery, the films are often very emotional, and who doesn’t wish they could change something in their past?”

Combine time travel with science fiction and you have a world of unforeseen consequences, dangerous new technology, and character’s experiencing the psychological and personal effects of tampering with the world they live in. All of which, when combined, make for compulsive viewing.

Deptford Cinema is known for offering audiences something a little extra alongside its movies.

Following on from the afternoon screening of Twelve Monkeys, the cinema is showing Chris Marker’s rarely screened short film La Jetée (1962), which inspired Gilliam’s film.

This will then be followed by the launch party for the new season, where sci-fi cocktails will be served and music played in the cinema’s bar from 7pm – an other-worldly evening all round.

Have you ever tried tequila with orange?”

Billie, our hostess with the mostest, asks. We’re seated in quirky cocktail den Little Nan’s Bar in Deptford Market Yard, discussing our shared love of tequila-based cocktails, writes Holly O’Mahony...

On learning that neither my companion nor I have ever downed a shot of tequila followed by sucking a slice of orange (nor have we downed a shot of anything for a good few years), Billie declares we must try one, and promptly gets up to prepare these for us. “I’ll even do one with you,” she says with a playful wink.

There are two kinds of hospitable bar hosts: those who are polite, warm and attentive – seeing to your needs with a professional air – and those who are fun-loving, familiar, and who become like an honorary member of your party for the night. Billie belongs to the latter group. As my companion points out several drinks and conversations with Billie into the night, you’d come back to Little Nan’s just for her company.

Little Nan’s is run by Tristan – or Grandson Tristan – and was set up back in 2013 in honour of his late nan, Little Nan Jojo, using some of her former furniture. The result?

Nan’s living room. That is, if your Nan is an eccentric, lavish party queen. In a more typical ‘nan’ sense, the bar is kitted out with a small electric heater, a glass-topped table framing a picture of a pooch, and selection of frightful lampshades and armchairs. But these are muddled together with bunting, exotic plants, a zebra-patterned sofa and fairylights among other decorative touches.

The drinks menu is similarly both retro and garish; hidden inside an old Beano comic book, several pages of drinks are presented in collage style, with handwritten lists cocktails layered on top of leopard print paper, with cut-out pictures of staff members and famous icons scattered between them.

This brings me back to tequilabased cocktails, of which there are six on the menu. All cocktails come as either a glass or a teapot (which is triple the price of a glass and roughly three

cocktails worth). We decided to try the Duke of Deptford (gold tequila, silver tequila, triple sec, watermelon syrup and fresh lime juice) which was fresh, tangy, light and scrumptious.

Following through with the ‘oldfashioned lounge meets party’ vibe, the cocktail came looking like a celebration in a teapot, with said chinaware decked out with metallic streamers, a parasol, a cylinder of orange instead of a teapot lid and thumb-sized rubber ducks floating among the liquid.

We stayed for another – resisting trying the Pornstar Nan or Sir Lionel Richie, both favourites on the menu according to Billie – and instead stuck with tequila, this time opting for the Party Mullarkey Lodge (gold tequila, silver tequila, mezcal, rhubarb syrup, fresh lime juice and lemon). The concoction was also supposed to come with smoke foam, but they’d run out of this on our visit. Flavour wise, it

was unsurprisingly more bitter than our first, but delicious all the same.

The heady brews here will probably leave you looking for something to soak them up with. Once again, the menu delivers on the old-school, breaking-all-the-rules theme.

Essentially, whatever items you pick, you’ll end up with a beige plate featuring freezer treats you probably haven’t seen or thought about since the ‘90s. Our spread featured a fish finger sandwich, pigs in blankets (in comforting sliced white bread), chips glazed with cheddar and brie, onion rings and Potato Smileys (remember them?). What these items lack in terms of quality and taste, they sure make up for in pure comfort food satisfaction.

Little Nan’s is no longer unique to Deptford, or even to south east London (there’s a branch in Catford, too); its unconventional offering has proved hugely popular, so much so that the team have managed to open a third bar in Fitzrovia; albeit reviews suggest the bar’s offcentre vibe isn’t quite as at home in Zone 1, yet.

All in all, a good time was had at Little Nan’s. I wasn’t sold on the tequila shots with orange (sorry Billie) but I’ll be returning for the quirky cocktails and comfort food classics. Or perhaps to sample the bottomless boozy brunch?

It’s certainly a setting that invites full-blown, daytime revelry.

On 13 August 2018, the Mayor of London (of City Hall, the Queens Walk, London, SE1 2AA) issued a direction under article 7 of the Town and Country Planning (Mayor of London) Order 2008 that he will act as the Local Planning Authority for the purposes of determining the Application. Subsequent to that direction, the Applicant has submitted to the Mayor revisions to the Application.

The revisions make amendments to plans and planning documents submitted as part of the Application, and include: Increase in residential ground floor frontage, through the introduction of duplex units to southern elevations; amendments to the housing mix to provide; 3 fewer one bed units, 2 additional 3 bed units and the introduction of a 4 bed unit, enhanced boundary treatment with the Thistlebrook Estate to provide a new masonry wall of 2.5 metres; revisions to the landscaping approach at ground floor with amendments to parking area material and finish and additional planting; revisions to the landscaping approach on roofscapes and playspace provision; and a reduction in the number of car parking spaces by 10.
