OVER THE MOON The winners of the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition are being announced on October 24 with an exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.

Ten winning images are on display along with other astrophotography that’s out of this world. The images in the running to win include several close-ups of the Milky Way -snapped everywhere from Australia to a cave in Malibu.

There’s also an Aurora in New Zealand, Saturn in portrait, the international space station, several sunspots and a full moon lit up like a Christmas tree.

BIT ON THE SIDE The Bromley Players are bringing Side Show, a musical based on the life of conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, to the Bob Hope theatre. Echoing the hit film The Greatest Showman, the story follows the 1908 Brighton-born stars whose careers took them to America where they were among the biggest stars in Vaudeville, earning their manager more than $5,000 a week (equivalent of $65,000 today). Minx Up Your Life encourages women over 45 to embrace a “fantastic stage of life.” Carrie penned the book after observing a reoccurring belief in her clients. “For women over 45, if

we don’t take charge of this time of our lives and claim it, it will be claimed for us,” the author told the Weekender. “There’s a belief that for women over this age, you are of no use. You’re no longer sexy or attractive,” she continued. “We are completely bombarded with this culture of youth. Every woman you see is desperately trying to maintain the

appearance of youth. I don’t put any woman down for her choices.

It’s challenging to get older as a woman and to know what you’re supposed to look like.”

The 50s are a “fantastic time in life for a woman,” Carrie said.

“With most women I coach from age 30-42, there’s one theme: have a baby or not have a baby.

It’s a constant. Once women

are 45 plus, most women have lost fertility and it’s not about reproduction now. If they do have children then they’re grown up.

They can focus on this stage.”

“I’m in that stage now and it’s great,” Carrie continued. “I want

to say to women: this is brilliant.

Don’t believe what you’re told, don’t be put into a box. For single women you don’t have to feel like you’re waiting on the shelf.”

The book is positive, inspiring and a “bit jokey.” “Flip your perception; as you get older you have all this experience. Minx Up Your Life is a pro-woman book,” Carrie said.

It’s not an anti-men book either.

“I do talk about dating,” the author, who became single at 42 after the end of an 18-year relationship, said. “If you do want a partner or a lover, you need to take the steps.

I talk about internet dating and deciding what you want.”

Carrie, who lives near Plumstead Common and works in Old Street, studied for two years to become a professional life coach, and has been practising for five. “With therapy and counselling the focus is very much on the past and trauma you need to address.

Coaching is much more about looking at the present, to build the future you want for yourself,” she said. “We only go into the past to identify any limiting beliefs, which may be part of our conditioning and preventing us from moving forward, and any repeating patterns that are holding us back.”

People like coaching because they can feel progress and change, Carrie said. “In the States people boast about having a coach because all the most successful people in the world have coaches; they want to be at the peak of their game and make sure they have a healthy work life

balance. Things are shifting and changing here.”

Many coaches establish a niche but Carrie has many. “I don’t believe life fits into neat little boxes. Someone might come to me for career coaching and we discover a confidence issue. I look at professional and personal. I work with athletes, CEOs, divorcees, creatives, on a wide spectrum from age 17 to 72,” Carrie said. “People come in really stuck and you see them flip their life around and they’re off. It’s all about mindset and awareness. We get into ruts and grooves, a motorway mind where you’re stuck in A to B and coaching starts to activate the C and D roads. People are going along, not happy, and they get a pinch, a wake up call, and that’s when they come to see me.”

“We dull ourselves, and it dulls our potential, our dreams and visions and there’s no need for that whatsoever,” the coach said.

“I work with positive psychology.

My clients are pro-active rather than reactive. We can get pulled around by people and situations and then you get to 80 and realise you’ve been in the passenger seat your whole life. With coaching we get you back in the driver’s seat. It’s your life. What do you want it to be?”

Bluesfest back at O2 BluesFest returns to the O2 with a star-studded line-up, writes Laura Burgoine...

The four-day events sees performances by Robert Plant, Van Morrison, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer John Fogerty, Grammy-winning Southern-rock phenomenon Zac Brown Band, multi-million-selling folk-rockers Counting Crows and multi-award-winning US vocalist Alison Krauss.

On Thursday October 25 John Fogerty is performing his songs from Creedence Clearwater Revival, while special guests the Steve Miller Band are also playing.

Friday October 26 sees Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters take the stage, along with very special guest Van Morrison.

Half Term The air is getting cooler, leaves are changing colour and the holidays are nearing. October half term is right around the corner – here’s some fun things for the whole family to enjoy:

Ice Skating at the Natural History Museum Kick of the countdown to the holidays with a night filled with ice skating and hot chocolate.

The ice rink at the Natural History Museum comes back to town on the 25 of October and is open from 10 am until 9 pm.

The Potions Room at Cutter & Squidge Apple Day It’s a day devoted to British apples at Woodlands farm trust. There will be apples for sale, Biddenden Cider, tractor and trailer rides, live music from Skinners Rats and stalls selling country crafts. Afternoon tea just got magical. The potions room at Soho’s Cutter and Squidge is serving up potions and caldrons with their afternoon tea special. Borough Market’s Apple Day Celebrations

Celebrating the Circus The Museum of London is exploring the history of the circus and the science behind it. It is the 250 anniversary of the circus this year, and the museum of London is hosting a series of 20 minute engaging and entertaining talks.

There will be ‘tricks, pops and daring acts of courage’ as well. Audiences can participate and help the spring loaded cannon and bed of nails work. Ticket sales open two weeks before the event.

There will be three sessions a day available for booking and a fourth walk in time.

Autumn Wildlife Explorers

Apple cider, autumn tales and the October Plenty will take place at the 10th annual Borough Market Apple Day Celebration.

Celebrate the 2500 apple varieties indigenous to the UK through live music, songs, arts and crafts, apple tastings and more. The festivities start at noon and run until 4 pm. Vendors will create apple themed goods and chef Kathy Slack will cook up harvest and apple themed dishes. The event is free, charity will be given to the Lucy brown house to support the local community.

The Woodlands Farm Trust is hosting an explorer’s session about how autumn affects the farm.

Kids can take part in an ‘autumn scavenger hunt’ and other autumn activities to learn about the changes that occur. This is a part of a series of events where kids have the opportunity to collect stamps in their farm passport. If you collect enough stamps, you have the chance to earn a prize as well.

The event is on 24 October from 11 am to 3 pm.

Tickets are £3 per child. Drop-ins are welcomed.

Royal Borough of Greenwich Revocation of decision to expand Boxgrove Primary School, Abbey Wood, and instead to establish Designated Specialist Provision (DSP) for pupils diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

In accordance with School Organisation (Prescribed Alterations to Maintained Schools) (England) Regulations 2013, the Royal Borough of Greenwich is proposing to revoke a previous decision to expand Boxgrove Primary School, Boxgrove Road, SE2 9JP, from two forms of entry to three forms of entry.

It is proposed instead to establish designated specialist provision at the school for up to eight places, for pupils with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The general effect of the Orders would be to: (a) extend the existing Plumstead Station (PL)

Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ), providing

a PL CPZ permit holders parking place throughout Hudson

Place (the existing double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting

restrictions at its junction with Raglan Road would remain

unchanged) and a PL CPZ permit holders parking place on the

south side of Raglan Road, outside Nos. 68 to 96

Raglan Road; note: the permit holders parking place in Hudson

Place would not be marked on street but would instead be

indicated by signs stating 'permit holders only past this point'; (b) provide that residents and business users whose postal address

is within Hudson Place or even numbers 62
