A 210,000 square foot shopping outlet is scheduled to open at the O2 arena with restaurants, shops, bars and entertainment all under one roof. The Icon outlet, located under the tented roof of the O2, is scheduled to open its doors on 20 October at 10am. Some of the shops on site include Gap, Phase Eight, Cheaney Shoes, the Body Shop, Aspinal of London and Levi’s. The outlet is part of a large expansion to the O2 arena that includes eight additional cinema screens (for a total of nineteen screens) and the opening of the new Oxygen Freejumping trampoline park.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC The UK’s biggest music quiz, Sounds Familiar, comes to Churchill Theatre Bromley.

The quiz takes place in the Lounge, a newly refurbished vibrant and venue space in the theatre. With over 100 tracks across 8 rounds, Sounds Familiar is as far from a pub quiz as you can possibly get. Everyone in the team is included and you don’t need to know the answers to have a good time. Crowds can expect to hear anything from Wham! to Weller, Katy Perry to Tom Petty, Tina Turner to Tinie Tempah and Bruno to Bowie.

A GIANT STEP FOR WOOLWICH

A kickstarter campaign is raising funds to hold a moon themed festival in Woolwich next year to celebrate 50 years since the moon landing. The epic three-day event would include author Margaret Atwood talking about maverick women and the moon, turning off all the lights in Woolwich for a moonlit story-telling, famous and new voices from the jazz and electronic music scene composing an ode to the moon, yoga, star gazing, markets, tarot, sea shell readers, and plenty more. NIGHT FEVER Are you ready to party? Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet is the best disco in town, playing 70s and 80s soul, funk and disco. Strictly for grownups, the next retro night is upstairs in the ballroom at the Trafalgar Tavern. After launching HSDY in Greenwich in 2010, organisers are now taking the party far and wide, running nights in London, Croydon and soon Brighton. There’s choreographer-led routines (Carwash, Love Train and, of course, Haven’t Stopped Dancing Yet), vinyl DJs Auntie Maureen and hula-hooping DJ Da’Lynne on the decks, free retro sweets, ice pops, and a best outfit catwalk competition. Founder Nikki Spencer started HSDY in her 40s as she wanted to be able to go out dancing without feeling like she was gate-crashing one of her teenage daughters’ parties. On 22 October Oxygen Freejumping opens its newest park. An attraction for all ages, the park boasts two floors of jumping madness. LORRAINE’S ON A ROLL J

azz drummer Lorraine Baker’s debut album has been four years in the making and for the launch of her tour she’s “coming home” with a gig at Oliver’s Jazz Bar, writes Laura Burgoine...

Having graduated from Greenwich’s Trinity Laban in 2009 with First Class Honours, Lorraine has worked with acclaimed British musicians including Julian Siegel, Simon Purcell and Christine Tobin and has recorded for BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship as well as performing at the Tokyo Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the Royal Albert Hall.

Eden is the debut release by the drummer percussionist and bandleader. Lorraine has crafted the album with the drums at the centre and pays tribute to legendary drummer Ed Blackwell by re-arranging tunes that he famously played.

“This album has been a long time coming,” Lorraine told the Weekender. “I started working on it four years ago, transcribing Blackwell’s improvisations, taking existing tunes and giving it a modern twist.”

Transcribing music is a skill Lorraine honed while at Trinity Laban. “I did research on Blackwell’s playing. It’s how I get into his style and understand his musicality,” she said. “I learnt it at college. It’s how you get into the heads of the musicians you admire. It makes you learn the music really well. Then I had a few ideas of my own.”

For this album, Lorraine worked with electric bass player Paul Michael whom she studied with at college. “We’ve known each other for over ten years and we kind of composed the other elements to add onto the tunes and develop it,” she said.

Taking up drumming at age 12, Lorraine says she was a late starter. “I did tap dancing first, which I really loved,” she said.

“With tap dancing you have to really feel the rhythm through your body, and in Blackwell’s playing it sounds like a dance.

It has a rhythm and emotion, which I really love.”

The tap dancing organically lead to makeshift drumming by way of “knitting needles on an old Quality Street tin.” “My Mum burst into the room and I thought she’d be angry I was making so much noise but she asked if I wanted to do drum lessons,” Lorraine said.

“My parents have always been super supportive.”

The family cellar, formerly used to store coal, became Lorraine’s rehearsal studio. “I used to go down there for hours on end to practise,” the drummer said. “I

They employ teachers to go into different schools in the Kent area. Dave White, my teacher, was a major influence on my jazz playing. He ran a swing band with a really broad range of playing ability and invited me to join them when I was 14.

I learned how to play phrases, reading notation –I’m quite hot on that- and I liked the freedom of improvising. You get to put your

mark on what you’re doing. I’m sure my work in that band gave me a place at music college.”

When Lorraine majored in jazz drumming at Trinity Laban she was the only girl in her class. “It’s becoming more even now though; there’s loads of female drummers in rock ‘n’ roll and jazz and there’s a lot of support,” she said.

“When I was 14 I had my Mum to help me carry stuff and other people in the band were very

nice, but you get used to lugging your own stuff around. For this tour I’ve been looking into getting lighter hardware and looking after myself.”

During her time at Trinity Laban, Lorraine played at Oliver’s Jazz bar frequently. “I did my final gig before my final recital there. I’ve seen a lot of my tutors there.

It’s the school’s main venue for performing. Because I studied so close, this gig is kind of like

coming home,” she said. “It’s the first date of a 19-date tour so there’s going to be a lot of adrenaline and it’ll be nice to be in a venue I feel so comfortable in.”

Eden was recorded with funding from the Jazz Services Recording Support Scheme and a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter; the album is out on October 12.

The band embark on a UK tour from October 12-November 29.

Ensemble to play plumstead peculiars The Flauguissimo Ensemble is playing the next Plumstead Peculiars concert on Sunday 21 October (4pm-5pm).

For the last decade, Flauguissimo has dazzled audiences across the UK and beyond, performing at London’s Kings Place and Cadogan Hall, Sage Gateshead in Newcastle, and St George’s in Bristol. Festival highlights include those in Stratford-on-Avon, Kings Lynn and Deal, London Guitar Festival, Utrecht Early Music Festival Fringe and Brighton Early Music Festival.

With a sensuous repertoire in French baroque, the ensemble features YuWei Hu and Borus Bizjak on flutes accompanied by Masumi Yamamoto on harpsichord and Johan Lofving on theorbo/guitar. The group made their debut in the Sydenham Concerts series.

Hidden histories at Maritime The National Maritime Museum is unveiling four new galleries, uncovering over 1,000 objects that honour Britain’s maritime heritage and explore hidden histories, writes Hannah Kanik...

The museum is hosting an opening weekend for visitors to experience the new galleries through tours, talks, workshops and more.

These galleries investigate the British and European exploration from the late-fifteenth century to present day and how Britain’s relationship with the sea shaped the country as a whole.

The galleries: Tudor and Stuart Seafarers, Pacific Encounters, Polar Worlds and Sea Things, officially opened on 20 September.

The Tudor and Stuart Seafarers gallery will uncover stories of adventure, piracy,

ambition and greed. Here, visitors will find everything from portraits to ship replicas to maps and globes.

Polar Worlds explores the impact of extreme environments on human lives, from Arctic to Antarctic landscapes. This dramatic white-walled gallery gives the illusion of being within

The Pacific Encounters gallery investigates the world’s largest ocean and the hidden histories of exploration and exploitation surrounding it. On display you will find life size boats and the rich history of Pacific islanders.

Sea Things links the ocean to personal stories in order to uncover what the sea means to you. Boat replicas, ocean and sea themed toys and more are on display here.

Throughout the weekend there will be various free tours, talks and activities around the museum.

t’s now time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route.

Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you

find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting. After spending the whole of your life in school

you might think that re-sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question. However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital.

Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed.

The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your

teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult. After all you don’t have to be there - it is your choice. This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the selfmotivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting. Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

Infantryman Rob’s Sheer Nerve

Rob’s first book with Endeavour, and centres around a fictional British mission to commandeer a German U-boat during WW2. Rob spoke to us about the inspiration behind this ambitious tale.

As a kid and young adult, I read my fair share of commando comics and stories from World War 2, all of which

were ideal fodder to recruit young Robert into the Army, in particular, the Infantry. The truth is, it was a couple of years ago, when the seed for the story was gently pushed into my ear. I happened to come across a documentary on You Tube, ‘The Greatest Raid of All’, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson. ‘Operation Chariot’ was the daring Commando raid upon the Normandie dry dock in St Nazaire harbour in 1942. The mission… to deny the German battleship Tirpitz a dry dock facility on the French coast. It was Clarkson’s enthusiastic delivery of such an amazing story that served me the baseline for The Sheer Nerve.

I write fiction, historical fiction in fact. I cannot wander into the realms of the absurd when it comes to writing my stories, so I must ensure they maintain an element of credibility.

In The Sheer Nerve I deliberately gave myself a problem. I have a company of British Commandos, based in Gibraltar, who have been tasked with raiding La Rochelle U-Boat facility. For the story to be credible, I delved into my professional experience. I served for twenty years in an Infantry unit, retiring in the rank of Sergeant. At my rank level, I was privy to, and at times contributed to the planning process that British troops use to prepare for battle. With that knowledge, I sewed

it into a story that would include such planning. For Captain Paul Hook to lead his Commandos into the teeth of formidable German defences, which protect high-risk assets such as U-Boats, I needed to throw the reader into the finer detail of the mission plan. By the time the first shots are fired, I want the reader to feel like one of the very men about to fight their way off the captured U-Boat, causing mayhem throughout the facility until told otherwise.

My research regarding German Submarines and Enigma machines took time. I exploited open source material available online and taught myself how to use an Enigma machine. I wrote to U-Boat enthusiasts all over Europe asking them if such a force could squeeze into the confines of a German submarine. They all said yes, but there would be a trade-off. The performance of the submarine would be affected greatly, such as with diving and manoeuvring, and many of the crews’ war fighting duties, less department heads, would have to be taken up by Commandos. The U-Boat commanded by a British Sub Captain would quite literally be nothing more than a means to deliver the commandos onto their target.

A trojan horse, if you will. To be detected and attacked by the Royal Navy or indeed the Royal Air Force would certainly mean a grim watery

death for men used to fighting on land.

The story is very much fiction, but I sure hope it highlights the type of men we had in our ranks back then at a time when to do nothing would only serve those who wished to harm us. The missions were dangerous, mocked even at political level, but the men who carried out such missions were ordinary lads who were willing to do some good in the face of overwhelming odds.

Commandos are trained to cause trouble, it is what they are good at.

They are not reckless, glory seeking macho types, for they are intelligent, meticulous people who ensure that they will maximise their effect against an enemy force. They know that some of them will fall, but their ranks only swelled even more when the British people came to hear about such missions against the Nazi war machine, and that such men existed.

he cult-classic musical Grease is returning to Bromley next year, starring Peter Andre as Teen Angel, writes Hannah Kanik...

After its successful eight-week run at the Leicester Curve last winter, the musical will be touring the UK and Ireland in 2019 for the first new production in 25 years.

Nikolai Foster, director of the musical and artistic director at the Curve, said: “Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s musical is an electrifying celebration of the birth of cool and teenage culture. It provides a gripping snapshot of a country on the cusp of social change, all set to one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll scores ever written.”

Its opening performance will be held at Leeds Grand Theatre from 19 June to 20 July, making it the longest running show in the theatre’s history, before coming to the Churchill Theatre in Bromley

Millwall the musical P

laywright Annette Brook lives in East Dulwich and loyally supports her local team Dulwich Hamlet as well as Crystal Palace. So how did she come to write Cold Blow Lane, a musical about Millwall? This was a story that had to be investigated, writes Michael Holland...

Annette, who has been writing poetry from an early age, had an idea for a play set in the 1981 Brixton riots. “I never wrote it down,” she says, still, after all these years, looking annoyed with herself for not putting pen to paper. “I think I doubted I knew how.” In 2005 she sent her idea to Channel 4 for their ‘The Play’s the Thing’ competition and she made it through to the final 30. “That was out of over 2,000 entries,” piped up the lady now looking less annoyed with herself.

“As you can imagine this was an enormous boost and got me thinking that theatre was the space for me.”

As well as a penchant for writing, unsurprisingly the talented young Annette already had an affinity with theatre, instilled through trips to plays with her mum and with school. “I love all kinds of theatre, from tiny fringe shows to West End musicals… I enjoy the immediacy of the audience reaction with live performance,” she emphasises.

Moving on, Annette began collecting degrees at Goldsmiths University and then taking her play idea, her passion for writing and the Channel 4 motivation, she approached the Royal Court who invited her to join their prestigious Young Writers’ programme. It was here that she says she was “provided with a comprehensive grounding in writing for theatre.”

Since then Ms Brook has had plays performed at Theatre 503, Brockley Jack, White Bear, The Albany, Soho Theatre and The Feminist Library, amongst others.

And next on that list of fine theatres to put on Annette Brook’s work is the relatively new Matchstick Piehouse, a mixeduse arts space in Deptford with most of the people involved in the production hailing from SE London: the director Theo Cowan

is from Peckham, Rob Howat, the composer is from Lewisham with other team members located in New Cross. And maybe this is how it should be because most of Brook’s plays are set in SE London.

However, there is not one Millwall fan in the group so I

asked: why Millwall? “It’s got such a resonance in South London,” she says as the warm up before a list of reasons: “I knew a Millwall Lioness at school and she was fiercely proud of both the women’s and men’s clubs. The Matchstick Piehouse is a stone’s throw from the Den and the Matchstick team are

keen to tell stories about the locality. I worked with Matchstick on a play earlier this year and they mentioned they’d like to have a Millwall musical so I thought, why not!”

Hence, the premise for Annette Brook’s Cold Blow Lane is a ska/funk/rock ‘n’ roll musical imagining the affiliation of two legendary football clubs in the ‘80s: Millwall and the Millwall Lionesses, one seeking a better image, the other the recognition it deserves.

I asked the writer if only fans of musical theatre would enjoy this.

“I hope the play speaks to a wide audience. There’s references to football, obviously, and to 1986 south London, which will please a certain crowd, though you could come without a knowledge of either.”

So, should football fans go to see it? Her immediate “Yes!” hit me like I’d been volleyed by Harry Kane with his eye on a goal.

“The Matchstick Piehouse team are all football fans, I’m a football fan. We care about football. It was fun to write about World Cup ‘86 (the year Cold Blow Lane is set) whilst World Cup 2018 was being played out but the Women’s World Cup is next year so it is very exciting that the profile of women’s football is on the up. So of course football fans should come to see it - it’s one hell of a night out!”

And I won’t be arguing with that because anything with ska and football and women and SE London involved is good enough for me.

ack by popular demand, it’s the Catford Gin Festival. The three day event, in the main auditorium of Catford’s Broadway theatre, is showcasing Dulwich-based distiller Fatty’s Organic Gin alongside makers from further afield like Colonsay Gin from the Hebrides in Scotland, writes Laura Burgoine...

by Fever Tree Premium Tonic Water, the other distillers attending include HMS Spirits, Hidden Curiosities, Tappers, Griffiths Brothers, Hayman’s, Old Bakery, Sherlock and Sons, Brentingby and Tom Cat Six. The Old Tom gin distilled in conjunction with FoxDenton is a smooth slightly sweeter style gin that has six botanicals including the unique hint of Scotch bonnet pepper for a real warmth.

Tickets for the event cost £25 which includes entry to a session, a commemorative copa balon gin glass, a tote bag, a brochure to guide gin-lovers through the festival journey and tasters from each of the distillers.
