Borough gets a new arts festival: Greenwich Performs

B

etween the mid-1990s and relatively recently, the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival reigned as the only multi-genre arts festival to operate almost exclusively in the borough of Greenwich, entertaining locals as well as crowds from further afield, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Then, in 2014, Totally Thames festival trickled down the river from its former mooring on the south bank, bringing with it a diverse programme of entertainment and events, all in celebration of the Thames.

Fast forward to autumn 2018 and there’s a new kid moving in on the arts block: Greenwich Performs. Founded by former chair of the Greenwich Society Tim Barnes, this new festival is a celebration of the arts in all its forms, taking place in the heart of Greenwich.

Greenwich Performs is a festival for the whole community, with most ticketed events priced at £15 or under in a bid for inclusivity. Its two-week line-up boasts a diverse schedule, including classical music concerts, jazz performances, productions of Shakespeare, children’s theatre and even a vegan Oktoberfest event in Greenwich Market.

The programme features over 50 events in total, with performances taking place at landmark sites – including the Old Royal Naval College and the Queen’s House – as well as newer cultural hotspots such as Oliver’s Jazz Bar and Greenwich Theatre.

Things kick off on Sunday September 30 with a performance of Handel’s Esther at St Alfege church. That same day, the Rock Choir is performing songs at The Point, accompanied by a firework display organised by Emergency

Exit Arts. The festival welcomes several special appearances along the way, including local poet Blake Morrison presenting an anthology of prose and poetry based on South East London, and playwright Michael Frayn discussing his philosophical comedy Here (1993), which is being revived at Greenwich Theatre this October.

Amidst guided walks, free recitals and tours of historic houses, other festival highlights include the chamber choir Canticum singing at the Queen’s House, the English Piano Trio playing at St Alfege Church and feminist-comedy dance troupe Gracefool Collective performing at the Laban Building.

Meanwhile, those with little ones should pay a visit to the Fun Palace at Rothbury Hall, where Emergency Exit Arts is curating a two-day programme of family activities on October 6 and 7. Greenwich Performs then concludes with Chantry Dance Company’s ballet adaptation of Dracula at Greenwich Theatre on October 14.

The idea of the festival came from Tim Barnes, former Chair of the Greenwich Society, who remembers the atmosphere of former Greenwich festivals dating back the 70s. “Greenwich Open Studios were stalwarts of the old Greenwich Festival and I am delighted that their exhibition at Tony Othen’s Greenwich Gallery at the bottom of Royal Hill will be on throughout the fortnight,” says Tim. Tim initially looked to the Peter Harris Trust – a fund that supports local cultural activities – to help support the programme.

Visit Greenwich, the Borough and Greenwich Theatre were all early advocates, too. The festival has since received support from Trinity Laban, Royal Museums Greenwich, the Royal Parks and the Greenwich Society.

“I hope that two concerts in

particular will be sold out,” Tim remarks. “The first is the English Piano Trio performance of Mozart: Man and Music on the evening of October 1. The trio is being joined by Rachel Bolt [the viola player] for four movements of different piano quartets, and there will additionally be four movements from piano trios,” he explains. The alternative event on that night, Tim also points out, is junior doctor-turned-comedian Adam Kay’s already sold-out show This is Going to Hurt at Greenwich Theatre.

The first part of the concert features a variety of English Renaissance music, while the second half sees Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell brought to life.

Oscar winner Martin McDonagh’s first play

M

artin McDonagh’s work has been enjoying a lengthy reign in the spotlight this year, both on the stage and the big screen, writes Holly O’Mahony

The British-Irish playwright, screenwriter and director’s latest film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, was nominated for seven awards at the 90th Academy Awards – winning two – and won four Golden Globes, including Best Screenplay for McDonagh. Back in the UK, and specifically the West End, McDonagh’s 2001 play The Lieutenant of Inishmore ran all summer, basking in the laughs of audiences and critics alike, while his latest play A Very Very Very Dark Matter is due to premiere at London’s Bridge Theatre in October. Bringing McDonagh’s work to the Bob Hope theatre in Eltham this month is director Fiona McGahren, whose production of his 1996 play The Beauty Queen of Leenane runs from September 26 - 29.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is – like much of McDonagh’s work – a black comedy. The playwright’s first play, the story is set in the village of Leenane in Ireland’s Connemara district in the early 1990s. It centres around the toxic and dysfunctional

relationship between Maureen Folan, a 40-year-old spinster, and her 70-year-old mother Mag who, partially crippled by burns, depends on her daughter. When local construction worker Pato reveals at a party that he’s secretly thought of Maureen as ‘the beauty queen of Leenane’, she sees potential in him to fulfill the love she’s never known.

But jealousy, lies and burnt letters follow, leaving this a darkly funny but ultimately tragic tale.

The play premiered in a production by the Druid Theatre Company in Galway, Ireland, before enjoying successful runs in the West End, and both on and off Broadway. It was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award as Best Play, and the 1998 Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning four. So what inspired Fiona to want to stage a production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 2018?

“Although timewise it’s an extended One Act Play, there is so much to digest with regards to the characters and their journeys that I just wanted to explore this myself through directing,” Fiona says. “I remember reading the play in my late 20s and having a one-sided view of what I thought was just and right at the time,” she recalls.

“Then reading it again a few years

later with a different view, and now I’ve been challenged with my view again on further insight.”

The Beauty Queen of Leenane is the first production Fiona has directed. “Over the last year I’ve known that I would like to direct on my own production and feel thankful that the team at the wonderful Bob Hope theatre have given me that chance,” she says.

Fiona worked in amateur dramatics as an actor in her 20s. She performed in productions at Erith Playhouse, Geoffrey Whitworth, the Bob Hope Theatre and the Edward Alderton, before going to Rose Bruford College to train as a professional actor, graduating from there in 2006.

“The two main roles of mum and daughter have been fascinating to explore and direct, as well as creating a set that shows both the claustrophobic atmosphere and energy of the play,” Fiona says, adding that the laugh-out-loud comedy moments have been a joy to work on. “These are golden and need to be timed to perfection.”

Whether audiences are onboard with the gritty humour or deeply disturbed by it is yet to be known.

“Remembering how I felt readying the play, I think the audience will go one way or the other,” says Fiona. It’s a comment which could

be applied to most of McDonagh’s work. “For me, I see it from both the mother and the daughter’s point of view, and hopefully I’ve directed it from both sides,” she says. “Either way, I hope the audience laugh, and feel entertained, shocked and horrified by this character-driven

journey.”

Over 200 women dance together in new show produced by Complicité

L

eading theatre company Complicité’s latest production Everything That Rises Must Dance sees 200 women from all different backgrounds, ages and abilities come together to dance. The piece, which has been created and choreographed

by Sasha Milavic Davies, and presented by London’s international dance festival: Dance Umbrella, is described as celebration of female relationships, an ode to the way women have danced throughout history, and a living archive of contemporary female movement, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Sasha is known for making large scale work within the dance and theatre remit. She choreographed a chorus of 100 people in The Human Comedy at the Young Vic, and a chorus of 80 in The Suppliant Women for the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh, which toured to five different venues – each with a new community chorus.

“I’ve worked on large scale dance pieces before – usually with up to 100 people – but it’s always involved me standing with a microphone giving instructions,” she explains. “I wanted to find a way of filtering it down to be an individualised process.”

Sasha says both herself and the show’s composer, Lucy Railton, have always been interested in taking something out of its natural habitat and exploring it on stage.

Before taking on the project, she produced a piece with just eight dancers, in which the performers observed women in normal life before recreating their movements

on stage. “The movements themselves became beautiful and dance like, while telling a story about the women that had been observed, going about their day-to-day lives,” Sasha explains. “I realised the template for this, where everyone brings in movements they’ve seen on the street and making these into

a dance, would work well with a large number of people.”

Thus, the idea for Everything That Rises Must Dance was born.

The performers are overseen by ten professional dancers acting as dance captains, each responsible for a group of 20 women. Each performer wears a number on her chest, while audience

members are asked to pick a number from a raffle on their way in, corresponding to those worn by the performers. This way, the audience can choose to focus on a specific performer if they wish. “Myself and the creative team have done all that we can to make this completely foolproof,” Sasha laughs. “It’s mathematical

to a fault – we’ve got every minute accounted for.”

a musical celebration of 1718 at st alfege church The Choir of St Alfege Church in Greenwich is performing Handel’s Esther on September 30.

The church community is currently celebrating 300 years of the building, which was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor in 1718. To mark this, the community decided that Handel’s Esther – written that same year – should be performed in the commemorative concert, writes Holly O’Mahony...

St Alfege Church has a rich musical tradition and is the burial place of Thomas Tallis, the father of English church music who composed and directed under four monarchs, from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I. The church has a reputation for cathedralstandard music, and has over 30 choir members as well as its own Director of Music, Stephen Dagg of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The concert will see the choir joined by an orchestra and guests soloists, including soprano Waimay Yau; countertenor Nathan Mercieca; tenors Heldur Harry Polda and Jonah Halton; and bassist Sam Young.

Stephen is directing the choir in the performance from his harpsichord, while the orchestra is being led by Martin Burgess.

The words for Esther were written by John Arbuthnot and Alexander Pope, while the music was, of course, composed by Handel.

The Reverend Canon Chris Moody, vicar of St Alfege Church, said: “I hope this concert will give the audience a taste of the quality of the choral music that we enjoy at St Alfege’s, as well as the richness of contact we have with the wider musical community in London. A chance to see Ian McKellen play the title role in King Lear A

screening of Chichester Festival Theatre’s 2017 production of King Lear, starring Ian McKellen, is showing at Greenwich Picturehouse on September 27.

This National Theatre Live screening of the production is being broadcast live from the West End, where the play is currently enjoying a sell-out run of just 100 performances at the Duke of York’s theatre, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear was first performed on St. Stephen’s Day in 1606.

The story is believed to be derived from the legend of Leir of Britain, which itself is based on a mythological Celtic King.

King Lear follows the gradual descent into madness of the title character who, in disposing of his kingdom, divides up his assets between just two of his three daughters, after his youngest daughter Cordelia (Anita-Joy Uwajeh) fails to flatter her father with the same empty statements bestowed on him by her elder sisters.

productions of King Lear over the centuries, and film adaptations too in recent years. At Stratford-upon-Avon in 1962, RSC director Peter Brook set the action against a huge, empty white stagem, in a production that was commended by the scholar Roger Warren for catching ‘both the human pathos’ and ‘universal scale’ of the scene where Lear and Gloucester meet. Fast forward to 2014 and Sam Mendes’ production starring Simon Russell Beale stunned audiences at the National Theatre. Most recently, in May 2018, BBC Two broadcast Richard Eyre’s critically-acclaimed production of King Lear, starring Anthony Hopkins in the title role and Emma Thompson as Goneril.

Those are just three of many triumphant productions of what is regarded to be one of the Bard’s greatest masterpieces.

Chichester Festival Theatre’s modern production of King Lear, directed by Jonathan Munby and also starring Sinéad Cusack as Kent and Kirsty Bushell as Regan, has received largely positive reviews. In the role of Lear, McKellen’s performance has been heralded

as ‘spellbinding’ by the Telegraph, who noted his ability to capture ‘the gamut of a long life in his crumpled face’, while the Guardian commented on his ‘dazzling swan song weighted with poignancy’.

WALK INTO THE EVENING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

St Christopher’s hospice is organising a sponsored walk to raise money for the work they do, offering palliative care. Vintage vibes and homemade cakes

I

’d heard good things about the Red Door café in Greenwich long before my visit. Friends and Google alike spoke of its vintage interiors, mismatched furniture and delicious homemade cakes.

It sounded alluring. So, on the first weekend with slightly ‘meh’ weather this autumn, I paid it a visit, with my book and appetite for something sweet in tow, writes Holly O’Mahony...

A quick glance over the counter at the rows of Monmouth Coffee bags stacked on the shelves instantly dispelled any concerns that Red Door might be more style than substance. Monmouth’s own coffee shops are acknowledged as among the best in London; walk past the Borough Market branch at any time of day and you’ll see a queue of people trailing out the door, eagerly awaiting their caffeine kick. So a café serving Monmouth coffee clearly has a dedication to quality and an awareness of what Londoners want. The black Americano delivered on this promise – both rich and deep in taste – and was served in a funky mug too. Meanwhile those who prefer tea will find it comes served in a cute rustic teapot, while the fizzy soft drink offering is of the Fentimans lemonade variety.

It was decision time. I soon began to regret coming to Red Door alone on realising this meant I could try only one of the many handmade mounds of deliciousness staring at me from their glass casings. The lemon and rosemary nearly had my order with its fluffy-looking sponge, lemon curd centre and sprigs of rosemary sprouting out on top. It looked fondly reminiscent of homebaked cakes from my childhood.

But then, so did the coffee and walnut cake, and its carrot-infused competitor in the next jar along.

In the end, I went for the courgette cake (having yet to master my own), which was a little light on the veg – sultanas being the dominant flavour instead – but unrivalled in fluffiness, and with thick, creamy icing. This was arguably the prettiest of the bunch too, decorated with sprinklings of pistachio and edible dried pink flowers. Thankfully, it was sweet enough to stop me ordering a slice of something else. Incidentally, many of the cakes on the menu here are gluten-free, while the breakfast menu has several vegan options embedded between salmon or cheese-based dishes.

The aesthetics of Red Door are the sort that make you want to wile away an afternoon there. Deep red walls and creaky wooden floors give the café a homely feel, ideal for curling up for a gossip or to read a book. Fairy lights and brass-

rimmed mirrors hang on the walls, interspersed with quirky pieces of art that range from Pollockesque abstract expressionism to vibrant portraiture. Meanwhile the soundtrack of soulful classics will lull you further into this den of cosiness.

“Gosh this is lovely,” remarked one woman as she and her partner walked in. And so it was. In fact, I was still there at 5pm when the two eccentric Scotsmen running the shop that day were trying to close.

They started warning the steady flow of customers that they’d only be able to stay for 20 minutes but still the cake-hungry public kept on coming. Perhaps, reader, you were among them? The Red Door is certainly no secret among the Greenwich community, after all.

However, if you haven’t poked your head around its door yet, do. Oh, and it really is red in case you’re wondering.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich on 24th September 2018 made the above-mentioned Orders under section 6, 45, 45, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Orders will come into operation on 1st October 2018.

The general effect of the Orders will be to revoke and then re-introduce by means of ‘map-based’ Traffic Orders, the provisions of the existing ‘text-based’ parking places, loading places and waiting, loading and stopping restriction Orders specified in the Schedule to this Notice, as consolidated together with any subsequent amending or applying Orders , without any change in substance to the provisions imposed by the Articles of those Orders.

Note: The map schedules which will accompany the new Traffic Orders have been prepared from site surveys and depict the parking, waiting, loading and stopping restrictions, as they currently exist on-street.

Note: Any relevant Traffic Orders proposed by the Council which are Made before the Orders referred to above, will be revoked and included in the 'map-based' Traffic Orders.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Tunnel Avenue at the junction of Blackwall Lane.
