JOIN AN ARTIST-LED WALK A four-mile, artist-led walk from Woolwich Arsenal Station to the Grade 1 listed Victorian site of the Crossness Pumping Station is taking place on September 23. Artist Lily German will lead the group through observational drawings in response to the river and other sites seen along the way. Greenwich’s Old Brewery is inviting the public to come and help celebrate its 187th birthday.

Throwing open the doors to some of Greenwich’s fascinating buildings O

n September 22 and 23, Open House London is throwing open the doors to over 800 properties across London, offering walks, talks, tours and a general chance to have a look around, writes Holly O’Mahony...

While over in the borough of Westminster, there’s been much excitement over the addition of 10 Downing Street – home of British Prime Ministers since 1735 – to the list of Open House properties this year, in the borough of Greenwich, the doors are swinging open to lots of interesting and unique buildings, too.

Open House began back in 1992, when it was founded by Victoria Thornton (now an OBE), whose vision was to give free public access to the city’s best buildings and to inspire visitors through art and design. When Victoria first established Open House, just four boroughs participated and a bus drove visitors between each building taking part. Now, all 32 of London’s boroughs take part, offering the public free access to some of their most interesting properties and landmarks.

“Not only has the festival itself developed in size, Open City – the charity behind Open House – has begun working with schools and the education sector,” explains Annie Simpson, marketing project manager for Open House London. The learning programme, she says, aims to involve

children and young people with the festival, inspiring them with the architecture on show.

In Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum and various different courts of the Old Royal Naval College will be offering tours over the two-day event.

Meanwhile Ravensbourne University, with its interlinked floors around an impressive central atrium, will also be open to explore. Participants can also take a trip down to the river to learn about the contemporary timber and aluminium used to build the Greenwich Yacht Club, or up to the skies with the Emirates Air Line Tour: an exploration of the civil engineering achievements that saw the construction of the cable car.

In Blackheath, Neil Rhind MBE FSA,

President of the Blackheath Society, is leading walks around Blackheath Cator Estate, the architecture of which spans early and mid Victorian, 1930s suburban, post-war municipal and ultra modern.

London’s only surviving great Jacobean mansion Charlton House will also be open to visitors. Set in Charlton Park, the red brick with white stone dressings is a rare example of classic Jacobean style, while each room boasts a unique fireplace coupled with beautiful strapwork ceilings and other original features.

Meanwhile in Woolwich, Master Gunners – sixty contemporary homes designed to accommodate different life stages and needs – will also be open to view. The properties are a mix

of houses and apartments, with an overall emphasis on large family units and affordable rented tenure.

“There is also 40 Norman Road, the new studio for architectural practice BPTW Partnership which consists of a large open-plan office with expansive views across Deptford Creek,” points out Annie, who is already looking ahead to Open House London 2019.

“Next year we hope to focus on the new design district that is currently being built in North Greenwich.”

SKIN: A HIP-HOP DANCE SHOW EXPLORING TRANS IDENTITY Hip-hop dance company 201 is performing their latest show Skin at Greenwich Theatre on Thursday 20 and Saturday 22 September, Holly O’Mahony...

Fusing urban and contemporary styles with an original score

by Ross Allchurch, Skin tells a powerful story of gender transition through urban dance.

This fast-paced, emotional story of family, identity and belonging – which saw rave reviews when it premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 – features seven dancers and choreography by 201’s founder and artistic director Andrea Walker.

“As a company we have a history of using dance-theatre to tell LGBTQ+ stories,” explains Andrea. The company’s previous show Smother, which enjoyed a sell-out international tour, focused on two same sex couples; specifically, their exploration of their sexual orientation and journey to finding one another. Looking back on Smother, Andrea recalls: “the mix of urban movement

and storytelling attracted an audience who wouldn’t normally be exposed to such stories, so we thought it’d be exciting to continue on that path and present a new emotional story, Skin.”

The narrative in Skin explores trans identity and the experiences of trans people, which Andrea points out are still very underrepresented in popular culture. “We wanted to do our part in changing that by presenting an intimate, powerful journey of a boy and his mother,” he explains. Skin also taps into mental health, particularly anxiety – something Andrea has personally battled with throughout his life. “It was scary but also cathartic to represent my own experience with anxiety on stage,” he says.

Before becoming a choreographer, Andrea worked in film and TV, while Patrick Collier – 201’s producer and associate director – worked in theatre. Their respective backgrounds have meant the storytelling aspect of their shows play just as important a role as the dance itself. “Patrick

has been fantastic in helping push the narrative forward and helping the dancers find the most emotional aspects of their character,” says Andrea. “His work added depth to the show and enabled me to stay focused on the choreography as much as possible. Our dramaturg Kit Redstone also played a very important part in devising Skin’s story.”

Skin premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last summer, before showing at Manchester’s Queer Contact Festival and Hull City of Culture.

The 2018 tour, which began in Brighton on September 7, is taking Skin to 14 different cities in total. “It’s the first time we’re truly taking Skin on the road,” says Andrea.

Following the tour, Andrea choreographing a worldpremiere for the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, due to open in April 2019. Despite his current success, though, Andrea’s journey into choreography wasn’t a smooth one. “Before 201, I was in a place in my career where I

In 2014, Andrea was craving a change. He decided to spend some time in New York City, where he discovered a side of dance he hadn’t seen before.

“Six months later I came back to London feeling more inspired than ever.” He founded 201 – motivated to create a place in which he could embrace his personal dance style, rather than shy away from it.

“201’s mission is to tackle issues and tell stories that you don’t usually see in dance-theatre,” Andrea explains. “Skin is a story for anyone who’s ever felt out of place or like they don’t belong. It’s an emotional rollercoaster without a single spoken word, yet with a very clear narrative,” he says. “I hope the audience will come out feeling inspired, understood and maybe a little bit changed.” wasn’t sure where I belonged,” he recalls, “My choreography crosses genres and I couldn’t help but feel like my movement wasn’t hip-hop enough or

Feel Good at Woolwich Carnival Woolwich Carnival returns for the fourth year running on September 19. This year, the theme is Feeling Good – all things that make us happy, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The event is a celebration of local culture and community, featuring a parade, colourful costumes, live music and dance.

A range of community-run stalls will sell food and drink in General Gordon Square, and the main stage – powered by South East Sound System, Unit 137 – is hosting a line-up of steel drums, soca, jazz and reggae throughout the day.

Woolwich Carnival is very much a community affair, organised, led and run by Woolwich locals.

The committee was established in 2015 with support from arts organisation Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre (GLYPT). Members of the committee include school teachers, local residents and business owners.

In the lead up to this year’s event, the Woolwich Carnival Association ran workshops to get community groups involved, including costume making, structure building, music and dance workshops. “We are a grass roots organisation who put the local community at the heart of everything we do,” says Fiona Allison, project manager for Woolwich Carnival Association.

In order to find artists to take part, the Woolwich Carnival Association hosts open auditions in early summer, with the aim of

uncovering local talent to join the more established names. “All our main stage acts come from South East London this year,” Fiona says, proudly. “We also run a programme for young musicians, offering mentoring to 16-25 year

olds who will be performing, to support them in preparing for their slot on the day.”

Above all, though, Fiona explains Woolwich Carnival is about providing a space in which audiences get to see their whole

community come together for a day of celebration. “We aim to create an event that celebrates the uniqueness of Woolwich,” she says.

Take a journey under the river Part of Totally Thames festival, Float is a sitespecific audio tour in which guests journey under the river through Woolwich Foot Tunnel, guided by the voice of a child. Audience members each wear a set of headphones and allow themselves to be immersed in a soundscape as they reflect on the River Thames, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Designed by musicians and artistic collaborators Laura Guarch, Sarah Dufayard and Holly Khan, the aim of the audio walk is to connect participants with the theme of water – helping them link it to personal memories, emotions and reflections. Holly

and Laura worked on the sound and how it would translate within the production space, while Sarah focused on creating the immersive experience. “Initially, we were interested in how Londoners operate within the urban space which is shaped by the river,” recalls Laura. “We were fascinated by the acoustics inside the Woolwich Foot Tunnel and the potential of creating a visual choreography by just having people walking,” she says. “We got excited with the idea of creating a performance that would combine an internal experience with a collective visual experience of navigating the space.”

Float evolved from an earlier

piece the trio created, called In Your Interest. This experience also took place in the Woolwich Foot Tunnel, and questioned the impact safety instructions heard on London’s public transport have on us. “When we were given

the opportunity to recreate the piece for Totally Thames 2018, we decided to emphasise the history of the tunnel and the river, and make participants reflect on their connection with water through sound, the visual site and a walking choreography,” says Laura.

While Float is designed for a group of people to share as a collective experience, it can be booked both individually or as a group. The tunnel also remains open to everyday commuters, but as the performance is an audio walk, it’s invisible to the outside eye and so Float participants can go virtually unnoticed by the tunnel’s everyday commuters.

“The participants and passers by

blend together travelling through the tunnel,” Laura remarks.

“Float is an opportunity to become aware of how we usually navigate urban spaces and how we can do it in more creative ways,” says Laura. “We want participants to reflect on how the river impacts their daily routines, what use it has for them and what it means to them on a personal level.”

AFRO-FUTURISM AND MUSIC VIDEOS AT DEPTFORD CINEMA

n Friday, September 21, Deptford Cinema is hosting a screening of Dirty Computer, the ‘emotion picture’ and third studio album of American singer Janelle Monáe, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Released in April this year to widespread critical acclaim, the visual accompaniment to the album is set in a distant future, where Android Jane 57821 (Janelle) has been captured by a totalitarian society, hellbent on re-programming her brain and making her conform to their ways. Will a chance encounter with a figure from Jane’s past (Tessa Thompson of Dear White People and Creed) help her escape? The screening has been organised by the Reel Good Film Club, who will also be hosting an afro-futurism-inspired music video party after the screening.

The Reel Good Film Club was established back in 2014 by Grace Barber-Plentie, Maria Cabrera and Lydia Heathcote, as a film club dedicated to highlighting diversity in film.

and the trio have since screened films at Genesis cinema in Mile End, the V&A, the BFI and HOME in Manchester, as well as at Deptford Cinema. The team have also collaborated with others at the forefront of the battle for diversity in culture, including gal-dem magazine and the Women of Colour Film Club.

So, why did the Reel Good Film Club want to host a screening of Dirty Computer at Deptford Cinema? “I’m the biggest Janelle Monáe fan; I’ve loved her ever since I saw a photo of her in Vogue a good 10 years ago,” gushes Grace. “I’ve always loved her music and image but I was so impressed when Dirty Computer came out. It feels like an accomplished album and the visuals are so amazing. It seemed like the type of film that deserved to be seen on the big screen.”

Directed by Chuck Lightning, one half of American funk duo Deep Cotton, Dirty Computer is described as ‘a slice of afro-futurist dystopia’ on the Deptford Cinema website, but how does an ‘emotion picture’ differ from a regular one? “I guess an emotion picture is more focused on creating mood and emotion than it is telling a tangible narrative,” says Grace, reflectively. “There’s a structure

and a story to Dirty Computer, but what works about it is the way Janelle Monáe creates various moods with each song and everything is tied together.”

For Grace and the Reel Good Film Club, the appeal of Deptford Cinema is its community focus. “It’s such a great cinema to host more interactive screenings like our music video parties,” she says.

Those who stick around for the afterparty can expect to see more videos from Janelle, as well as those from Missy Elliott and Janet Jackson among others. Plus, guests can request any favourites that don’t appear on the line-up.

September 23 provides a rare chance to watch the barrier gates rotate into the fully closed defence position to stop the tide flowing into London. Marcella joins growing list of Deptford foodie gems Deptford is becoming a foodie hotspot. Both cooking pots and prosecco glasses have been bubbling away at Deptford Market Yard for some time now, with the likes of Dirty Apron, Mama’s Jerk and Little Nan’s Bar serving up their own individual brand of tastiness, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Then last summer, a sister restaurant to Peckham’s beloved Artusi popped up: Marcella.

Like her older sister this joint on Deptford High Street serves fresh, seasonal and simple Italian cuisine.

Stepping inside the light and airy Marcella, our group of three were seated along the counter – the last available space – at the back of the restaurant, from where you can watch the chefs work their magic in the kitchen.

Tucked along this row of seven seats, you could dine alone inconspicuously if you liked.

The only issue would be the small plate nature of Marcella; essentially, the larger the group you go with, the more you get to try.

Once seated comfortably, we were offered a jug of still or sparkling water – both of which are served on tap – and for which a discretionary £1 is added to the bill at the end, as a donation to WaterAid, courtesy of water company Belu.

It’s become a thing of pride in trendy and high-end restaurants to leave names of dishes or ingredients in their native language on the menu, playfully challenging their ‘worldly’ customers to be privy to its translation. We, alas, had virtually no Italian between us, but quietly consulted Google Translate instead of forcing our poor waitress to take us through every item on the menu. Speaking of service, it’s excellent here – all staff we spoke to were friendly, attentive and seemed as enthused about the menu as we were.

Beginning, as is only right, with drinks, we ordered a carafe of the Gavi di Gavi wine which was deliciously dry. A small plate of sliced crusty sourdough and butter then landed in front of us before we’d even begun to browse the edible offering.

For reasons I’ll soon get onto, we decided to abstain from ordering from the snacks and starters sections of the menu, which meant begrudgingly forgoing the Taleggio Arancino

balls – yours for £2.50 each – among other delicious-sounding moursels. This was because, having glanced at the short and mouthwatering pasta selection, we decided to go all-out on it.

Yes, we tried them all.

Each of the three pasta dishes on the regular menu came as either a small plate (roughly £7) or a large (£12-£13). We ordered a small of the spinach and ricotta ravioli with sage and brown butter which was fresh, delicate and lemony – the ricotta still crumbly despite being cooked inside the al dente pasta. We shared the larger plate of squid ink spaghetti with prawns, confit garlic and yellow datterini – which looked particularly pretty on the plate, the black pasta set off by the yellow tomatoes and pink prawns. Meanwhile a scattering

of samphire shoots gave the dish a juicy, gentle bite.

Next up came the casarecce (long twists of pasta), broccoli and n’duja – think of a pasta bake, then mentally deconstruct and gourmet-ify it. The result was cheesy (yet light), garlicky and lent a crunch by the n’duja – usually a soft, spreadable pork salumi but here, broken down into miniscule crispy dustings. In fact, we regretted only ordering a small plate of it to greedily stab our three forks into. Last but not least, we ordered the special – a mushroom tagliatelle which had a lemony tang from the lemonthyme. This wasn’t necessarily unpleasant, but a creamy, garlic base could have done a better job of setting off the core ingredients.

At the time of our visit, there was no meaty or tomatoey pasta

dish on the menu. Granted, with summer just gone, we’re not quite craving the likes of bolognese or ragù yet, but not offering a simply, classic, fresh tomato sauce all year round is arguably missing a trick.

Surprisingly, after carbloading on all that pasta, we did still have room for pudding – of which there were just two options: an olive oil cake and a peach ripple ice cream. We decided to try one of each. The ice cream was notably creamy and the portion generous, but could have benefited from having a touch more of the syrupy peach, if not fresh peach, to really make it work.

The olive oil cake – which was orangey and moist inside but with a crisp, just-out-the-oven topping – was spot on. Marcella, you’ve done us proud.
