A three–day conference dissecting themes of exploration and memory is taking place at the National Maritime Museum. Over the last few decades, maritime exploration has become an exciting field of study, with researchers from many different disciplinary backgrounds enriching, questioning and reinterpreting the subject for contemporary audiences. A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Totally Thames founder celebrates 21 years

I

f you’ve been out and about in Greenwich this September, you may have spotted unusual gatherings of people along the river, or heard music coming from unexpected places, writes Holly O'Mahony...

This month marks the 21st annual celebration of the River Thames. Known as Totally Thames, the festival spans the whole of September and encompases activities taking place on, beneath and along the river.

The festival was established back in 1997 by Adrian Evans, who remains its Director today.

Now in its 21st edition, the festival has operated under three different guises over the years. Between 1997 - 2013, it was known simply

as the Thames Festival and was just a weekend-long affair along the South Bank and Bankside. “It was like a party by the river,” recalls Adrian. The festival started drawing in numbers of around three quarters of a million, making it London’s second biggest annual event after Notting Hill Carnival. “As we gained more partnerships, sponsorship and funding we were able to expand and the festival grew incrementally into the month-long event it is today.” In 2014, the festival was rebranded at Totally Thames and today, the month-long programme runs along the 42-mile stretch of the Thames, and incorporates the work of artists, local communities and organisations with a passion for the river.

“Back in 1997 the South Bank was a completely different environment,”

remembers Adrian. “The Oxo Tower had just opened, but it was before the Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge and the redevelopment of Borough Market. People had no reason to circulate there.” What about the Southbank Centre, built in 1951?

“It was like an airport waiting lounge back in the 90s,” laughs Adrian. “Now there are pop-up bars and cafés all over the place but at that time there wasn’t any of that.” Adrian recalls that at the time, the Thames, despite running across the city, was a hugely underused and underappreciated natural asset. “There was no love for the river. People considered it polluted and foul. So the idea for the festival was to create an event that celebrated the Thames and

attracted people to it.”

Today, Adrian and the team behind Totally Thames collaborate with a number of organisations and invite the public to submit their work, or ideas they have for the festival. “We invite people in to talk to us, then we work out whether their ideas can be realised,” says Adrian, pointing out that part of the job is curating a programme that represents the river in its different aspects. This means ensuring the line-up includes items that explore the archaeology of the Thames foreshore as well as events which delve into the river’s secrets and those which celebrate it through art, spoken word, music and literature. “Once you look at the programme from the perspective of the river it becomes a bit easier to consider the diversity of the work we’re showing.”

Judging by the line-up of Totally Thames events in Greenwich alone, it looks like the team have achieved this balance of events.

Over the next few weeks in Greenwich, the festival is hosting a talk on the Whitebait trade; a site-specific audio walk through the Woolwich Foot Tunnel – in which audiences are invited to consider the concept of water and memory; an artist-led riverwalk to Crossness Pumping Station; and a night of Choral Evensong in the Chapel at the Old Royal Naval College.

One of the festival’s challenges, Adrian explains, is understanding the quirks and dangers of the environment of the river.

“It’s vibrant and unnerving. It transports people but it also claims lives. To understand it has been a journey for me.” On a more practical level, Adrian and the team at the Thames Festival Trust, who manage the festival, must consider the public licensing and permissions needed to run each event, as well as how to run them safely. “It’s about trying to connect people visually with the river in a way that’s genuine and not hazardous,” he says.

or little referenced aspect of the Thames. This year, the focus is on the Doggett’s Coat and Badge – the oldest rowing race in the world, held annually on the Thames since 1715. “People know about Henley and the university races [Oxford versus Cambridge University], but far less people know about Doggett’s,” says Adrian. “It’s a working men’s race, the outcome of which is more important for people working on the river than winning a gold medal at the Olympics.” Now in its 304th year, Doggett’s was held on

September 4, with the race taking place between London Bridge to Cadogan Pier. “We’re doing a film as well as other events around [the race] too,” says Adrian.

Another exciting addition to Totally Thames this year is its new partnership with the city of Kolkata in India. Parts of India’s Durga Puja festival are celebrated on the banks of the Ganges. An exhibition about the Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata is being shown as part of Totally Thames.

The key purpose of the festival, Adrian explains, is giving people

an opportunity to re-evaluate the significance of the river to them and to the future of us all. “It’s not just about a physical piece of landscape, it’s about water and why it’s important to us; why we should value it and be sensitive to it,” Adrian explains. “Climate Change and rising water levels is of consequence to us and the way we live, but we also can’t ignore the poverty of water in many places. Connecting to the river helps us connect to those bigger subjects.”

A vault festival favourite is coming to the Churchill Theatre A comedy play of belly laughs, broken hearts and biscuits’

follows Sue and Carol, two hard-of-hearing lifeguards, who sit watching the world go by as they wait for a danger that may never materialise… or will it? “[Treading Water] is based on the two Ronnies sketch Four Candles,” explains Kathryn. “In my version, they couldn’t hear each other because they’re far away from one another, trying to see what’s out at sea,” she says. “The play talks about love and loss, loneliness, feminism, the environment, expectation, and disappointment – all in a relatable way.”

Although operating under the company name Subtle Paws, Kathryn is essentially a one-woman band. “I drive the van, write the press releases, book the tours and perform in the plays. I must be mad!” she laughs. “Sometimes you just have to grab the bull by the horns and do it yourself.”

Kathryn has spent the last seven months touring Treading Water and says she’s enjoyed taking her work to new audiences outside the M25. “I have always loved playing regional venues.

No offence to London, but the audiences across the country are so open to new work. And so up for a good night out,” she says.

This isn’t the first outing for

Treading Water, either. Kathryn wrote the show back in 2011, but she says the work has been developed a lot since then. “I really wanted to return to comedy after taking a bit of a break to focus on a different project,” she explains. “The show is longer now; it was originally one half of a double bill I’d written. There are also lots of re-writes which took it in a different direction.”

Treading Water’s success at Vault Festival earlier this year speaks for the appetite for its humour. For those unfamiliar with the festival, it’s essentially London’s answer to Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Far smaller, though, the festival takes place in the compact location of the arches underneath Waterloo station between January and March each year. Many of the critics who attend Vault festival are also those who frequent Edinburgh each August, and to win a Highly Commended award here – which Kathryn’s Treading Water did – is on par with titles awarded at Edinburgh Fringe. “I was so excited when I won it,” Kathryn says. “There is so much incredible work at Vault Festival that to be recognised was a real honour.”

Things certainly aren’t slowing down for Kathryn following

the Treading Water tour. “I’m working on a new comedy play that has a similar style to Treading Water, but it’s early days,” she says.

“I’m also in the process of turning a play I did at Vault festival in 2017 [called Repetitive Beats] into a full length play to be performed in London next year.” The play is set between the illegal rave era of 1989 and the present day, and explores the movement which rebelled against Thatcher’s Britain, in which people reclaimed control of their nights out. “It’s a big project, but if it pays off it will be amazing,” Kathryn says.

For now, though, Kathryn’s focus remains on bringing Treading Water to new audiences. “The characters are normal people doing nothing spectacular or world-changing,” she says. “I think audiences like that. Exceptional characters are, of course, awesome in theatre, but ordinary people are too.”

Laughs aplenty at the Greenwich comedy festival F

ew comedy festivals in the UK can boast a line-up quite like that of the Greenwich Comedy Festival. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the festival is once again transforming the grounds of the National Maritime Museum into a twinkling celebration of laughter, live entertainment and light-hearted fun, writes Holly O'Mahony...

The line-up is almost too strong to pull out highlights (seriously, check out the website), but fans of Channel 4’s multi-award-winning hit comedy Catastrophe might want to make a beeline to see Rob Delaney’s show, which will be headlining the opening night of the festival.

On Sunday, comedian, writer and broadcaster Adam Buxton will take guests through the highlights of his 10 yearspanning show BUG, featuring noteworthy music videos he previously presented at the BFI Southbank. Later in the day, headline act Russell Howard – one of the UK’s best-selling stand-up performers – will be waving the festival off for another year with chortles aplenty. Russell will be joined by former Have I Got News For You guest Desiree Burch, Live At The Apollo star Phil Wang and Mock The Week regular Ed Gamble as host.

to see some of the biggest names on the comedy circuit perform live. Headlining acts are likely to sell out fast, so it’s worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

Meanwhile a selection of bars, street food stalls and live music will make the grounds an enticing place to spend the aftern oon or evening between shows.

What’s been found along the river bank?

The photographs of reportage and still-life photographer Hannah Smiles are on display as part of the Totally Thames festival this September, alongside historical artefacts found along the banks of the River Thames.

The exhibition, called ‘Mudlark’, includes rare items of deep significance including tudor pins, WWII shells, medieval pottery and messages in bottles.

Hannah’s journey into mudlarking – the act of searching the edges of river beds for items of value – began in late 2016. “After a few pints with a mate at the Cutty Sark Pub, we ventured down onto the foreshore and started picking up bones and clay pipe stems. It

wasn't until I got home later and Googled the Thames clay pipes that I discovered more about mudlarking and what a huge online community it had,” Hannah recalls.

After photographing the bones and pipe stems she found, and researching into the historically important artefacts picked up by others along the Thames, Hannah realised it could make an interesting personal project. She obtained the permit required to mudlark on the Thames, issued by the Port of London Authority, and began contacting London mudlarkers, to see if they’d be happy for her to photograph what they’d found. Together with her curator Florence Evans, Hannah set about turning these findings into a photography exhibition.

“There are so many fascinating items that have been found by London's mudlarking community,” says Hannah. “A big part of the challenge has actually been building people's trust to allow me to borrow their finds and photograph them back at my studio.”

The exhibition, which is showing at the Art Hub Studios in Deptford till Sunday 16 September, will also play host to a series of talks by mudlarks, discussing their finds and passion for the activity.

A selection of prints from the exhibition will also be available to buy. “I really hope that people will be blown away by the wealth of history and incredible stories that are literally being washed up on the Thames foreshore everyday,”

says Hannah. “These tiny, sometimes unremarkable objects are being found by people who are passionate about London's history, and are dedicated to recording and preserving it for everyone to learn from and enjoy.”

Charlton and Woolwich Free Festival returns T

he third annual Charlton and Woolwich Free Film Festival is taking place this week. The event, running between September 7-15, marks a chance to see household favourites on the big screen at a number of local venues, writes Holly O'Mahony...

The line-up includes films old and new, and locations range from outdoor sites to pubs and national properties – making it an opportunity to explore venues across the borough, too. All films showing are free to enjoy, although viewings operate on a first-come-first-serve basis, so it’s worth arriving in good time.

Earlier in the festival, Jordan Peele’s 2017 horror Get out was shown at cafe-cum-workspace artFix Woolwich. The film, starring Daniel Kaluuya as its protagonist Chris and Allison Williams as his girlfriend Rose, was nominated for four awards at the 90th Academy Awards in March this year, winning the awards for Best Original Screenplay.

Crowds also turned out for 2017 hit musical The Greatest Showman in the outdoor location of General Gordon Square in Woolwich. While the film, directed by Michael Gracey, didn’t receive the critical acclaim that La La Land enjoyed earlier that same year, it’s catchy songs and story of a businessman’s rise from nothing to worldwide fame won over the masses.

Festival highlights still to show include Mel Brooks’ comedy-horror Young Frankenstein (1974). Starring Gene Wilder as the title character

and Peter Boyle as the monster, the film follows Dr Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous scientist, who inherits his grandfather’s estate in Transylvania and recreates his grandfather’s experiment to make his own monster. But complications soon follow with the arrival of the doctor’s fiancée. Young Frankenstein is showing at the atmospheric location of Severndroog Castle on Friday September 14 at 7:45pm. Those who attend the screening are also invited to visit the castle’s viewing platform which boasts views of London, and the café will be serving cocktails, beer, wine, soft drinks and

light meals.

The film festival will also provide an opportunity to see golden oldie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is also showing on Friday 14 but at Shrewsbury House Community Centre Library at 6:30pm. The 1986 musical, directed by Ken Hughes, and starring Sally Ann Howes and Dick Van Dyke, follows what happens when young siblings Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley) meet the beautiful Truly Scrumptious (Howes) and she subsequently falls in love with their widowed father Caractacus Potts (Dyke).

Sister Act is closing the festival on

Saturday 15, showing outdoors at General Gordon Square at 7pm. The 1992 musical comedy directed by Emile Ardolino, and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, follows lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier (Goldberg), who is hidden in a convent where she becomes the resident choirmaster. The film was one of the most financially successful comedies of the early 1990s, grossing $231 million USD worldwide, and a stage adaptation of Sister Act has enjoyed success on Broadway and in the West End in subsequent years.

The first Free Film Festival took place in Peckham and Nunhead in

2010. The concept has since spread to other boroughs across south London. Each Free Film Festival is run by its own group of volunteers – while equipment, including projectors, are shared – and the festivals aim to bring people together to enjoy films in local places they might not have previously been.

Stunning views, but food lacked vision

The leaves are starting to turn a yellowy brown and an autumn chill is beginning to creep into the air – but wait (you and we both cry) – we’re not quite done with summer yet, writes Holly O'Mahony...

Surely there’s still time to enjoy a chilled glass of wine in the fresh air?

For those looking for somewhere to soak up the last of the summer sun, the pub garden of the Gipsy Moth in Greenwich is where to head.

Named after the small boat in which Sir Francis Chichester sailed single-handedly around the world between 1966-67, the Gipsy Moth pub is a big, lofty space spread over two floors. Its garden snakes from the side of the pub round to the back – but, if you can get a table in the greenery-shrouded back garden (and there are many tables to claim in these quarters), do your party a favour and pick a spot there; you’ll have much more room and an opportunity to get stuck into your meal without hungry passersby eyeing up your plate. Plus, you’ll have stunning views of Cutty Sark, which practically looms over the garden – but in a good way.

Despite having heard rumours that the food here was a cut above, we were disappointed on our visit that what was served was standard pub grub. The pan-fried sea bass on tomato and herb gnocchi I’d eyed up on the menu earlier that day had vanished from the main offering when we arrived. It had in fact been relocated on the specials board – despite, presumably, being served daily. I ordered it all the same, expecting delicious things, which sadly it didn’t deliver. The gnocchi was a little too hard and crisp, as if it had been chucked carelessly in the pan with the sea bass, which itself was plain. The ‘tomato and herb’ element of the dish was simply cherry tomatoes halved and scattered across the plate, with the occasional speckle of a flavourless pesto. I was left feeling hungry and unsatisfied.

My companion ordered the fish and chips, which came with a side of mushy peas. Although the portion of chips appeared somewhat scrimped on, the dish received the thumbs up. Judging by our experience, those looking to veer away from our choices might have a better time tucking into ‘safe’ pub fare of the sausage and mash variety (served with spring onion mash, crispy onions and red wine jus – yours for £11.95) than, say, the Asian noodle salad (£8.50), which sounds worryingly ambitious.

You might have a better time tucking into the 'safe' pub fare the damage menu, which I wouldn’t be against returning to try.

We didn’t bother with puddings, but for those who are interested these are of the sticky toffee pudding or warm chocolate brownie variety (and each will cost you £6.25). We did, however, sample a couple of the wines. The highlight, for me, was the Il Pallone Pinot Grigio Blush – a pale and

interesting rosé – which was light and refreshing. Sitting in the pub garden and sipping on this, it really did feel like drinking the last of the summer wine.

Why you should consider a career in construction This month will see recent student leavers deliberating on if Further Education is for them, if they should consider Government backed Apprenticeship Schemes or perhaps gain work experience in the industry of their choice.

With property prices falling owing to the uncertainty of how the economy will be affected following Brexit, Developers and Landlords are turning to new strategies to keep their investments secure and maximise profit.

Tara Taylor of Beckhams Property Services explains, this has led to a surge in development around London, especially Forest Hill, which is accessible to London Bridge in as little as 19 minutes. The streets are lined with houses undergoing renovations, including loft conversions, rear extensions and complete refurbishments.

Locals are excited that the area is finally receiving the much needed rejuvenation it deserves. With new business owners flocking to the area, searching to establish themselves in a quirky, culturally diverse neighbourhood.

When searching for a career, it can be difficult choosing the most financially and emotionally rewarding pathway.

Apprenticeships currently available via the Government backed portal include training schemes in steel work, bricklaying and roofing. Although public sector construction employment has fallen, private industrial, private housing and infrastructure have seen employment remain steady. According to the ONS, now is a great time to join the construction industry, as construction output increased by 0.9% in the three months to June 2018.

I entered into the construction sector in 2008, during what should have been the worst time to do so, following the recession.

I had a limited education, yet wanted to work in Finance where entry roles started on as little as £12,000. At the time, I would have loved the chance to work my way up the ladder, however, opportunities were limited. I was competing against people with over 10 years’ experience who had been made redundant from senior roles.

At that point I was offered a lifeline, as an old colleague explained regardless of age and experience, there was a shortage of Health and Safety Inspectors and Project Managers

construction, with salaries often in the region of £40,000.

Despite being only 21 years old, I was hooked on finding out more and secured a role as a reactive maintenance scheduler.

This taught me the basics about different trades and what paperwork, were required to commence works for each role.

I witnessed how the property market took a tumble in 2008, yet construction continued and I see history repeating itself today.

Everyday I work with experienced Project Managers, each suffering skills shortages. You’d be surprised and think the shortages apply only to skilled trades such as Electrical Engineers, but

no, even Labourers are equally desired. With employers crying out for talented individuals, eager to work their way up the ladder and who show ambition and initiative. Office Managers expect to earn in the region of £25,000, but why settle for that when in

London, I’ve seen 25 year olds managing major construction projects and earning in excess of £50,000.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH HIGHWAYS ACT 1980 AND TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council proposes, under section 90A of the Highways Act 1980 (a) to construct the type of road hump known as a “speed table"

in Eynsham Drive, between 21.5 metres east of the

common boundary of No. 2 and Nos. 4/8 Eynsham Drive and

31.5 metres east of that common boundary including the

gradients which would each be 2 metres long. The Speed Table

would be an elevated section of carriageway with a flat top,

with a maximum height at its highest point than the

surrounding carriageway of 80 millimetres. (b) to construct the type of road humps known as "speed

cushions" three abreast the carriageway in Eynsham

Drive, with their centre lines approximately 3 metres east

of the common boundary of Nos. 34/38 and No. 40 Eynsham

Drive; Each speed cushion would be an elevated section of

carriageway with a flat top, a maximum of 80 millimetres

higher at its highest point than the surrounding carriageway

and measuring approximately 2.4 metres in length and 1.6

metres in width, including the gradients.

2. NOTICE IS ALSO HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich proposes under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to establish a “zebra” pedestrian crossing in Eynsham Drive, on top of the speed table referred to in paragraph (1)(a) of this Notice. Associated zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times, would be placed on the carriageway either side of the pedestrian crossing, extending approximately 17 metres in either direction.

[Note: these proposals are part of a scheme of proposed changes for Eynsham Drive, a Notice of Proposal for which was advertised on 15th August 2018. The proposal for a pedestrian crossing in Eynsham Drive detailed in paragraph 2 of that Notice of Proposal along with the proposed speed table on which that pedestrian crossing was proposed to be positioned is replaced by the proposals for the speed table and pedestrian crossing as detailed in this Notice].

3. A copy of documents, including maps, giving more detailed particulars of the proposed road hump and pedestrian crossing changes are available for inspection during normal office hours, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, 6HQ. 4. Further information about the road hump and pedestrian crossings changes may be obtained by telephoning Strategic Transportation on 020 8921 3026.

5. Any person who wishes to object to or make other representations about the road hump and pedestrian crossings changes should send a statement in writing, specifying the grounds on which any objection is made, to the TMO Team, Project Centre, Unit 2 Holford Yard, London, WC1X 9HD, or by email to GreenwichTMOconsultations@projectcentre.co.uk (quoting reference PCL/TMO/JP/1000005003b), to arrive by 3rd October 2018.

6. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The general effect of the Orders would be, in connection with the modification of the junction between Beresford Street / Plumstead Road and Woolwich New Road, to: (a) provide ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions on the south-west

side of Beresford Street, between 33.9 metres north-west of

the re-aligned north-western kerb-line of Woolwich New Road

and a point 58.7 metres north-west of that kerb-line; and (b) provide that all vehicles proceeding northwards in Woolwich

New Road shall, at its junction of Beresford Street / Plumstead

Road, turn right into Plumstead Road.

3. A copy of the proposed Orders and other documents, including maps, giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Orders are made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Orders, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, 6HQ. 4.
