Fans of award-winning playwright, screen writer and film director Martin McDonagh –best known for his films In Bruges and Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri- can see his play the Beauty Queen of Leenane at Eltham’s Bob Hope theatre.

Directed by Fiona McGahren, the play is set in and around County Galway and centres on the dysfunctional relationship between mother and daughter Mag and Maureen Folan. It follows their mundane, spiteful and vindictive relationship in this dark and often laugh out loud comedy; we are also introduced to neighbours Pato and Ray Dooley and their involvement in this unsavoury household.

See local self-taught artist Mark Anthony Taylor’s paintings at West Greenwich library. His iconic work is influenced by both symbolism and literary factors, together with his acute visual awareness and love of creating images. Taylor's painting technique demonstrates a pursuit of perfection in handling paint and his paintings show great care and attention to detail in execution.

A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME Totally Thames festival returns to the riverside from September 1-30. The annual season of arts and culture, which launched in 2014, runs along the 42-mile stretch of the Thames for a whole month.

At the Old Royal Naval College, head back to 1709, when a Londoner's common pastime was to watch a good execution, especially pirate executions. In Submersion, the admiralty battles it out with pirates. The world of theatre and circus come together in this joint production between Aircraft Circus Academy and Dave Diamond. Hold your breath with the pirate as he struggles to free himself in this swashbuckling escapologist event in a re-enactment of Houdini’s water torture cell escape. The pirate is lowered upside down in a tank of water, shackled and padlocked, and has just a nail file to pick the locks and to free himself. See for yourself if he can escape or is doomed to become a warning to other pirates.

After the show, the audience will be allowed to inspect the equipment used in the stunt and will have the opportunity to take part in Q&A with the actors and stuntman. Flawless chase the dream

I

n a performance that promises to be absolutely Flawless, dancer, choreographer and creative director Marlon “Swoosh” Wallen is bringing his league of street dance superstars to Greenwich, writes Laura Burgoine...

Flawless stormed onto the scene in 2004, inspiring the masses with their dazzling dance moves and taking top prize at the World Dance Champions twice.

The group was hurled into the spotlight as 2009 stars of Britain’s Got Talent, where they wowed audiences with their signature spins, splits and flips. Having firmly cemented themselves as pioneers of their genre, their formidable portfolio includes starring in the smash hit movie franchise Street Dance and performing for the Royal Family.

Flawless’ Chase the Dream Reboot UK tour is a show for the whole family. “It’s going to be full on. We’re excited,” Marlon told

the Weekender. “It’s not targeted at one particular audience; everyone can come to this and enjoy it. I would say expect be on a rollercoaster emotional journey.

You’re going to feel happy, excited, blown away, there’ll be moments of sadness. This show is high energy as it is and it also comes with a message.”

One of the dance troop’s goals is to encourage people to pursue their dreams. “The majority of people have 9-5 jobs, and whether it’s the case of responsibilities, work, bills or family, it can stop them from focusing on their dreams,” Marlon said. “People get distracted. Youngsters have the ambition to do something and we need to give them the support they need. That’s the key thing behind this show.”

Drawing influence from dance icons such as Michael Jackson, James Brown and Gene Kelly, Flawless is known for a wide repertoire. “As far as music is concerned, it’s very broad. Don’t

expect to just spectate; there’s lots of different types of music,” Marlon said.

Marlon began his dance career at age four; he started off copying Michael Jackson in front of the TV. “As far as dance goes, there wasn’t a Flawless before Flawless,” he said. “What we’re doing now is an evolution. Back in 2000, street dance wasn’t a career. It was done for fun.”

He enjoyed a solo career as a dancer, working for big names in the industry. “My first job was as a backup dancer for Victoria Beckham on her solo tour after the Spice Girls. That was amazing,” he said. “I was also a dancer for Madonna in her music video for Hung Up. She’s amazing. So down to earth. She really mingles and has conversations with people she’s working with. She doesn’t make you feel like she’s on a pedestal.

She’s very cool.”

After a star-studded solo career, Marlon decided to branch out.

“I just felt like after a period of time, you do these shows, you go home and your family are proud of you but then I went back to the drawing board and decided to find a group of dreamers who had the same goals as me,” he said.

“That’s how I developed Flawless, and the only way to be taken seriously was to make it a business,” he continued.

Flawless had been going for four years before appearing on Britain’s Got Talent. “It gave us a national profile, and we’re grateful. Now, we’ve been able to understand our fan base and also tap into a new generation,” Marlon said.

As CEO and director of Flawless Entertainment, which he runs with business partner Amelia Benoit, Marlon now runs a dance school for children and adults, with lessons on Sundays, at Base Dance Studios in Vauxhall.

concert in 2012. “Now when we work with an artist, it’s more of a collaboration,” Marlon said.

“That was insane. A pinch yourself moment. The idea came from the Queen herself. We did two different shows for her: one in her living room, which was just the royal family, us, and some young performers,” he said.

Chase the Dream: the reboot starts in September with Flawless travelling the length and breadth of the country performing at 45 venues across 3 months and drawing to a close with a grand finale at Indigo at the O2.

History Mary Mills

I

f you are writing about local industrial history a lot of your material will come from the local press and sadly much of what they report was (and is) about the more sensational and nastier accidents, writes Mary Mills ...

So I’m afraid this article is going to be about a nasty accident on the Greenwich Riverside. First of all though - a bit of explanation If you walk down the Riverside path on the Greenwich Peninsula between the Millennium Village and the Dome, you go past a jetty - in fact it is now called ’The Jetty’ and there’s a new restaurant on it and a gardening project. If I can advertise myself a bit I ought to say that I’ve just written a little booklet about some of the things which happened on the surrounding site.

The jetty was built in the 1940s for a power station - Blackwall Point power station - which once stood here. However the nasty accident I wanted to talk about was at an earlier establishment on the site, also called Blackwall Point power station.

At the start of the 19th century a mill had been built here and later the mill and the rest of the surrounding area were used for a large chemical works. In 1897 the owner of the chemical works died and the site was put up for sale. Part of it was acquired by the Blackheath and Greenwich District Electric Light Company limited. They had a Parliamentary order which gave them powers to supply electricity in Greenwich and Blackheath. In fact although they could supply alternating current in Blackheath, Charlton, Kidbrooke, Lewisham and Eltham, they could only supply direct current to Greenwich. They also did a deal with a local tram company to supply electricity to run the trams.

To facilitate this they built a number of sub stations around the area – one of these substations still exists in Blackheath Park at the back of Blackheath Concert Halls The new power station was built on the Greenwich Riverside. The subsoil on which it was built was not good and it appeared that soap works refuse had been dumped there, so the whole of the power station was built on piles made of pinewood. The buildings are described as substantial but the lack of money meant they were not “interesting from an architectural point of view” except that the engine room said to be faced with white glazed bricks. Coal was unloaded from barges and came from North East England. A jetty – a predecessor to the current jetty - was built of timber and concrete and had rails on which the trucks of coal could be moved about. The electrical and control equipment was supplied by local firm Johnson and Phillips whose factory was in Victoria Way, Charlton. There was

The explosion at Blackwall Point also a large and prominent chimney the height of which was considered ‘excessive’ by a local commentator.

The company's electrical engineer was John Archibald Constable, described at his death in 1933 as a pioneer of the electrical engineering industry. In 1906 he was living at The Circus in Greenwich. In December 1906 he had noticed that there was a leak in one of the boilers. He felt this wasn’t unusual and thought it could easily be dealt with but he became increasingly worried over the next few days.

The boilers had been supplied by the firm of Babcock and Wilcox then based in Cannon Streets in The City - they were later based in Southwark Street and its possible some people will remember them there. At the subsequent Board of Trade Enquiry a great deal of evidence was given by the manufacturers of both the boiler equipment and the steel from which it was made. However to cut a long story short an inspector was called in by the electricity company to look at the leaking boiler. He was William of Wilson Shaw who lived in Wandsworth. He was a Scot who was currently the London District Senior Inspecting Engineer for the National Boiler and Insurance Company. He was shown round the works by James Peter Coombes a local man with a job at the power station and living only a few yards away in River Terrace - cottages which once extended past the current cottages alongside the Pilot.

I am afraid that I have been unable to find any details about poor Mr.

Coombes, since as an ordinary worker he apparently didn’t qualify for an obituary.

Then there was an almighty great explosion. Both men had been blown to pieces. Mr. Shaw’s body consisting only of the skull smashed beyond recognition and Mr. Coombes could only be recognised by his clothing. As ever with these events no one really knew what had happened and the evidence had all been blown away –and this is what the Board of Trade inquiry was set up to establish. I have found nothing about the families of either of them –or indeed of any compensation.

The verdict of the enquiry was to find almost everyone concerned a bit in the wrong. Part of the boiler was certainly defective and there were some problems with the manufacture although most of it was said to be very good. Some of the damage may have been caused by poor handling but Babcock and Wilcox’s lawyer had wasted time at the inquiry by trying to blame the firm who had supplied of the metal to them. Also criticised was Mr. Constable who hadn’t reported the problem with the boiler to his management quickly and when he did said he didn’t think it was important. Mr. Howden was Chief Inspector of the South Metropolitan Electric Light Co. and the inquiry said he was a highly qualified electrical engineer who was also responsible for the boilers. They said in their report, mentioning him that ‘the engineer responsible for the safe working of the boiler should be someone with a good acquaintance

with the working of boilers’. Now what did they mean by that??

We must remember that in those days lighting in people’s homes and in the streets was entirely by a gas – and this power station was built next on the biggest gasworks in the world. We will come to that later - but we need to remember that there was pretty hot competition for lighting contracts and the gas industry was not going to give in easily. The new electricity companies needed to charge a competitive rate and also in order to get people’s custom some of them were offering deals whereby customers got a number of free lights if a supply was connected. It appears however that the electricity on offer from Blackwall Point was slightly more expensive than gas to light equivalent areas.

One of the fragments of the boiler had been blasted through the brick wall between the power station and the chemical works which was part of the gas works.

South Metropolitan Gas Company owned many gas works between Kennington and Woolwich with a controlling interest in gas works belonging to companies north and south of the river and they employed thousands of men. They organized trips for any member of their staff who might be involved with boilers in any way – or just interested - to come and see results of this explosion. With the message of how dangerous electricity was.

Today we take it for granted that the light in our houses and

streets is provided by electricity.

In 1906 gas was still in universal use – gas lighting had been used for street lighting for a hundred years and was still increasingly used in people’s homes. The gas companies had seen the electrical works spreading, they were aware it was likely to be the future and they didn’t like it. The fight back was well under way and any indication of danger in electricity works was a gift to them.

Blackwall Point power station was to continue in use until after the Second World War when it was replaced by a more modern installation which many of us will remember. I personally remember seeing its chimney struck by lightning in the 1970s which set up a vast alarm system in the neighbouring gas works which was then still in production. Both gasworks and power station have gone. The power station jetty built the 1940s remains and is now in use as “The Jetty” with facilities for local people. The gas works jetty, by the way, is home to Anthony Gormley's Quantum Cloud. We all have electricity in our homes – but there is still some gas street lighting - but that is another story.

Gordon goes on gigging

ordon Mark Webber has been performing around Greenwich for decades, and he’s here to say there’s still plenty of work out there for musicians, writes Laura Burgoine...

The singer works six nights a week, performing at local haunts like Oliver’s Jazz bar, and the “secret caff” Oxleas Wood Café, hidden away in the woodlands of Shooter’s Hill. “I’ve been working as a singer since I was 14,” Gordon told the Weekender. “I come from the East End, and left school very early after one of the teachers told me to get out and not come back. Two years later, just before I was 16, a truancy officer came to my home and told my Mum I hadn’t been in school!”

Gordon got his start performing in Working Men’s clubs; “I looked much older than I was,” he said.

Then at sixteen he had to get a “proper day job” and kept performing in evenings and on weekends. “After 36 years in the same job I went on a motivational lecture. The guy said: you should follow your passion, and so the next day I handed in my notice,” Gordon said.

At the same time, the musician owned the Greenwich Inn pub on Greenwich High Road. “It was a great music pub. I had lots of well-known musicians hanging out there. Jools Holland used to come in, Eddie and the Hot Rods… I had my day job, and my income from singing but the pub was struggling badly so after 19 years I sold it and decided to be a full-time singer.” This was ten years ago. “I’ve got a far lower income now but I’m happier,” Gordon said. “Now if somebody phones me up and asks me to do a gig in Portugal, I go.”

Up until recently, the 59-yearold did a lot of international performances. “It changed for me when I was 57 and the agency who I was working for, who got me cruise ship work, realised I was over 50.” Now Gordon lines up a lot of his own gigs. “It’s so very easy to get the work,” he said. “A month ago I went to Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Transnistria. I go abroad two or three times a year, work out a trip, sometimes with a tour group and I look at each town, find the music venues and just contact them looking for work.”

The singer is particularly successful in India and Vietnam, and puts it down to having an English accent. “What they realise very quickly, if they look at my webpage and video links, is that they don’t have anyone like me. There aren’t

“There’s thousands of Filipino artists who do cruises and when you’ve got someone singing Frank Sinatra songs in an accent, it doesn’t work.”

“Me singing with the correct accent is a huge tool for them. On my last tour, I went away for 15 nights and worked 10 of those nights. I’m not making a fortune but it’s paying for a holiday. During the day I do what I want, then I perform at night. If I get a wedding or a corporate gig that one event will pay the airfare.”

“In the UK I work for some agencies, and they get me better paid gigs,” Gordon continued. “After paying their 20 percent I’m still

earning more than if I went out on my own.”

The original East Ender became a south Londoner at age 16. “My brother lived in Thamesmead and there was a notice in the local paper saying ‘tomorrow they’re giving away council flats in south east London for anyone who can prove they’ve been living in London for five years,” Gordon recalled. “I joined the queue at 5am, it was four hours long, and the cut-off flag was 20 people behind me. They offered me a flat in Morris Walk Estate in Charlton, and part of the deal was the flat would be in a right state. But I went there and it was beautiful. A two bedroom flat.

It had been refused five times!” And the rest, as they say is history. “So I became a south east Londoner,” Gordon said. “Gigging work came quickly. I went into local pubs and got work, then discovered Greenwich and Deptford for music. It’s changed now. Mine was the first pub to put on gay jazz nights, and I was treasurer of the Riverfront Jazz festival for six years, which ran across 60 odd venues.”

When the corporate chains like Jamie’s Italian, and Café Rouge moved into Greenwich it changed the tone. “The fee I’m earning now in Greenwich is less than 20 years ago,” Gordon said. “The work is still there but it’s a flooded market now.”

“I still love Deptford and Greenwich with a passion,” he said.

On the last Sunday of the month, Gordon holds an open mic night at Tudor Barn. “I’m there with another professional musician. We play an unplugged mic, acoustic music, and we encourage youngsters to perform. The youngest has been ten years old –and they get to play with people who, last week, were working with Ed Sheeran.”

“The Prince of Greenwich is the

most unique pub I’ve ever been in,” he continues. “The owner is Italian and has travelled the world for 25 years collecting things. There’s a whale’s jawbone on the roof and a museum bar upstairs.”

Severndroog Castle is another favourite music venue, while Gordon has also entertained visitors to Woodlands Farm Trust. “There’s a little café up there on the farm where I’ve played an unplugged set, all rock songs. It’s really laid back,” he said.

“There’s still lots of people left in the Greenwich community who know each other; it’s still a wonderful place to be.”

Gordon’s advice for fellow artists is “you’ve got to be working to get work.” And going the extra mile seems to have paid off for this musician. As part of an exchange trip, Gordon performed at a festival in Greenwich’s twin city of Maribor.

“BBC Slovenia turned up and filmed my gig, and now 20 years on, I still sell more downloads in Slovenia than anywhere else in the world.”

he Painted Hall in Greenwich is literally that - a painted hall.

But this hall is in a 300 year old building designed

by Sir Christopher Wren, the paintings compared to Michelangelo, and a stairway takes a small team of conservators up to the ceiling where they are conserving those paintings for the first time in half a century, writes Michael Holland...

It was Mary II who, on seeing British sailors returning home from war maimed and often destitute, ordered a hospital where they would be cared for. The Painted Hall became the dining room where the invalided Greenwich Pensioners would have their breakfast, dinner and tea until the Crown realised they could rent the space out for special functions and the old sailors could eat in the undercroft below…

Wren didn't live to see his wonderful Royal Naval College buildings completed, but his apprentice was Hawksmoor, who went on to build some fantastic churches in London, and he made sure the job was finished properly.

The conservation of The Painted Hall has almost finished, with the final, and most painstaking section, being the ceiling. Visitors are allowed to get up close to Sir James Thornhill’s Baroque murals by guided tours of the ceiling artwork, that bring to life the allegorical, mythological and historical characters found there: the gods, the Royals and the scientists of the day, some with intricate detail that cannot be seen from ground level sixty feet below. And, amazingly, you can see the naughty graffiti left by past conservators, marking their territory, as it were…

The hour long tours give a real feel for the hard work involved, and is supported by the social history of the early 18th century that adds another aspect to the experience. We learnt that they ordered one perpetually drunken

sailor to sit for Thornhill every day for three months while he painted him, as a way to keep him sober.

Once the painting was finished he was straight back on the booze and once more frequenting the 88 pubs in Greenwich village!

We also discovered that the youngest invalid seaman there was just 12 years old. He had

been at sea since he was 10, became sick, got admitted to the hospital and passed away two years later. And as for the cheating queen who got ‘swept under the carpet’!

The conservation will be complete by the end of September and the work will last for a hundred years, so seeing

this amazing artwork up close is really a once in a lifetime experience.

Thursday evening tours now have an added bonus of wine tasting with the sommeliers at The Old Brewery, which is a nice way to finish such an interesting event.

Out to Ruffell a few feathers C

omedian Suzi Ruffell was born in Portsmouth but like a lot of people she headed to the capital and now lives in East London - ‘But don’t let that put you off,’ she says only half-jokingly, writes Michael Holland...

Suzi has been performing as a stand up comedian for about eight years, and she says that for five of those years she was ‘utterly terrified’. So what kept her putting herself through such turmoil for so long, I asked: ‘The buzz of being on stage and making strangers laugh was addictive, so it was probably after my first couple of gigs that I thought I want to do this for the rest of my life.’

As well as being a primary source for Suzi’s comedy her family is very supportive of her career, but Suzi tells me: ’It's lucky they are, really, because they feature heavily in my set…’

Ms Ruffell likes all types of stand ups, and reveals she has found inspiration from comedians at both ends of the comedy spectrum: ‘Alan Carr to James Acaster, as well as Maria Bamford, Josh Widdicombe, Katherine Ryan, Romesh Ranganathan and Nish Kumar amongst many others’. Her eight years on the circuit has honed her skills down to a funny fine art, with a

routine that most people can relate to because she mocks both working and middle class.

Suzi will soon be appearing at the 10th Greenwich Comedy Festival along with some of her favourite comics, so for insurance she made sure I mentioned that ‘the line up

at the Greenwich Comedy Festival features not only comics that inspire me but also some of the best comedians in the country…’

After Greenwich Suzi will tour the UK before a well-earned holiday: ‘It’s a trip to Spain with my mum which is bound to inspire some good

Buenos Aires know how to pampa you

I

f, during a walk on Blackheath, you find your mind wandering to South America’s pampa plains, leading you to wonder: “is there anywhere I can go for a decent steak locally?” the answer might be staring you in the face, writes Holly O’Mahony.

Ok, so you’re probably not thinking any of the above, but what we’re trying to say is, Buenos Aires Café – a small joint overlooking the heath – serves steak virtually unrivalled in these parts, and chips, too, for that matter.

Step inside the restaurant (which really does look straight out onto the heath) and you’ll find yourself submerged in a cosy, bistro-esque room decked out with traditional Argentinian wooden interiors, while pictures – including some of famous faces – adorn the walls and a soundtrack of gentle jazz does a fine job of settling guests into their visit. Walking in at street level, you’re actually in the upstairs of the restaurant – which seats 25.

Below, there’s nearly room to serve the same amount again – ideal for those looking to book for a larger group.

Before tucking into the main event, we were wooed by the selection of apéritifs. After contemplating the Fernet Branca – supposedly Argentina’s favourite bitter (best when served with Coke) – I went with our waiter’s recommendation of the Prosecco with Limoncello, sold on the menu as ‘a nice alternative to a Bellini’. It came in a shallow, wide-rimmed glass and was sweet, refreshing and tangy – like a cloudy lemonade with a punchy, naughty-for-a-Sunday kick.

With a busy afternoon of plans ahead, we didn’t get stuck into the extensive wine list, boasting a lengthy selection of Argentinian wines as well as bottles from elsewhere. Our loss, no doubt.

Now let’s talk steak. All beef served here is Argentinian, we’re proudly told. Preferring a lean cut I went for the Bife de Chorizo, a 200g sirloin steak.

This came perfectly cooked (for my bang-on medium preference) and was juicy, lightly charred and scrumptious. Embracing the full experience, I opted to season it with an Argentinian chimichurri dressing – oregano, parsley, garlic, oil, vinegar and paprika. It was light, zingy, but could have benefited from having a little more bite. I also opted for a side of papas fritas a la provenzal:

A sprinkling of parsley and crushed garlic flavoured these fries further, meanwhile the chimi-mayo (homemade mayonnaise mixed with the before-mentioned chimichurri) I ordered as a dipping sauce was a tasty balance of sharp and creamy.

My companion spoke highly of her ‘sandwiche de churrasco con jamón’ – a rump steak sandwich topped with parma ham and

served in a French ciabatta roll with salad garnish, homemade chimi-mayo and hand-cut chips.

There’s also a section of the menu dedicated to pizzas and pastas, but why would you come looking for either here? (Unless, of course, you’re meat or at least beef-averse.)

If your main course leaves you feeling too stuffed for dessert, I wouldn’t worry; judging by the chocolate fudge cake I had, you’re not missing anything special. The cake – a large portion, slightly stale from being heated – came jazzed-up with mint, blueberries, strawberries and caramel ice cream (other

flavours available included mocha, mango and vanilla), but all was very middle-of-theroad. My companion opted for the Alfajores Havanna cookie, a sweet treat with potential to make Argentinian diners think nostalgically of their home country. But to those of us unfamiliar with the brand, the cookie looked and tasted like a posh Wagon Wheel, with a soft biscuit and cream interior coated in chocolate. While puddings here are arguably missable, if you’re looking for a local restaurant serving a proper plate of steak and chips, Buenos Aires Café is your answer.

Get into the right secondary school in Royal Greenwich T

he difficulties faced each year by parents and carers deciding which secondary school to apply to for their child remains the biggest problem in terms of education decisions, writes Kevin Quinn...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

In a highly competitive process it is vital that you get the order of preference right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. The biggest mistake you can make is to put just one school down. That might well be the only school you want for your child, but there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To give your child the best chance possible, try to list up to six preferences on their application.

It is all too easy just to go by hearsay and reputations - visit the schools for yourself. A school that may never have been in your mind before could offer subjects or have specialist facilities that would meet your child’s talents more than the school that was originally top of your list.

There are all types of secondaries, from voluntary aided church schools to academies, foundation schools, free schools and independent secondaries.

And it is here where the admission criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the admission criteria and match those criteria to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for just 120 – 240 places. When you go to an open day, make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives. The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that you might not get in. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

Do use all six preferences, however you need to be wary about only choosing schools which are heavily over-subscribed. Put your first preference down, but also preferences into which you have a real chance of getting your child. As a local paper, year on year we have seen parents and carers left in the worst possible situation. They have only picked over-subscribed schools and have got into none. They did not have a fall-back plan. So, from being in a position where they felt they had the luxury of choice, they were left feeling like they had no option but to accept the school they had been allocated automatically by the local authority.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital decision for your child’s future. If your child is in Year 6 and currently attending one of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s primary schools, you will receive further information from your child’s headteacher.

Since so many of Greenwich’s secondaries have now become academies, it is vital to check how the admission criteria stand when the school is oversubscribed.

Parents and carers can apply for schools in any area but if you live in Royal Greenwich you will need to apply through the Royal Borough of Greenwich. If you live in another borough, you will need to apply through your home authority even if you wish to apply for a place in a Royal Greenwich school.

contact the special educational needs and disabilities team for further advice. Once you have made your preferences and submitted your online application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions.org. uk) during the evening of 1 March 2019. You will also be sent an email after 5pm on 1 March 2019 which will contain information on what to do next.

If you are not successful with any of your preferences then the school admissions team will allocate your child an alternative secondary school. This is likely to be the nearest Greenwich school to your child’s home which has a vacancy.

However, you have the right to appeal for any schools at which you have been refused a place, as well as to put your child on waiting lists. The deadline for submitting an appeal is 15 March 2019.

If you have been offered a

secondary school place you have until 15 March 2019 to reject the offer of a place. If the school admissions team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and your child’s details forwarded to the allocated school.

If you do reject the offer and also provide details of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, your child’s place will be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

Some parents and carers might also be considering a private or independent school, obviously depending on what budget you have or chance for a scholarship.

The process in this case can be different but the main principle of visiting schools before hand and making sure that you don’t limit yourself to one school with no back-up plan still applies. Head teacher at Blackheath High School Mrs Carol Chander-Thompson told the Weekender: “Great evidence for the atmosphere and quality of the school is the kind of graduates they turn out.

"Meet some of the older students.

Are they confident; happy; aspirational; interesting?

"Do they speak naturally and with warmth about their school environment?

"Can they speak with knowledge

and passion about their future plans?

"These are all good indicators of a balanced, effective and inspirational educational environment."

She added: "Try to avoid getting caught up in the tutoring-madness that can overwhelm sanity and reason.

"Focus energies on finding a school that is a great fit for your son or daughter, rather than training them to leap as many 11+ hurdles as possible.

"It’s far more important that the natural curiosity and love of school is sustained through Year 6 than ensuring there is one additional school offer on the table."

The Order provides that the prohibition would not apply to – (a) any vehicle requiring access to a property within the closure areas; (b) any vehicle being used for police, fire brigade or ambulance purposes, or for the purposes of a statutory undertaker in an emergency; or (c) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform, a traffic warden or a civil enforcement officer.

4. A copy of the proposed Order and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Order are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Order is made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Order, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 5.
