Woolwich brewery Hop Stuff returns to Deptford with craft beer festival Our love of craft beer in the cosmopolitan world isn’t about to dry up anytime soon, it seems, writes Holly O’Mahony...

This Sunday, August 26, Woolwich-based brewery Hop Stuff is hosting its second Deptford Craft Beer Feast in Deptford Market Yard, following the success of the first event in March. The Greenwich Weekender caught up with Doug Gilbert, Brand and Marketing Manager of Hop Stuff, and Alex Daulby, the brewery’s Taproom Operations Manager to talk all things hops.

Holly O’Mahony: How did Hop Stuff Brewery come about?

Doug Gilbert: Hop Stuff bubbled out of James Yeomans’ mind back in 2013. James left the banking sector to make beer for his mates – who were otherwise afraid of the then-complicated offerings from the craft world. The brewery was then established in Woolwich Arsenal, serving hoppy brews to locals and anyone else willing to try them. Since then, the brewery’s been boosted by three

huge runs of crowdfunding, and we’ve been able to open three taprooms: Woolwich, Deptford and Ashford.

combination of tasty beers, varied street food and space for people to come and relax with their friends.

HOM: What inspired you to host the Deptford Craft Beer Feast?

DG: At the end of last year, we opened our second taproom in the Deptford Market Yard, which is a beautiful space with listed brick buildings and a charming hub for independent stores and spots to socialise. Seeing the potential of the space, we asked if we could host a craft beer festival there [in March] and the bigwigs said yes. We invited our favourite breweries along and were absolutely blown away by the massive crowd that showed up. The idea was to put on a beer festival the way we would like it: simple, accessible, with free entry and lots of decent beers.

Alex Daulby: Yeah, creating the right vibe was important to us.

We wanted the Deptford Craft Beer Feast to be an over-thetop extension of what Hop Stuff taprooms are like all the time.

We knew the event needed a

HOM: The event proved a success when you first ran it in March. Are you changing things up for the August Craft Beer Feast?

DG: We didn’t expect such a big crowd last time, so we have more facilities in place this time around.

We’ve played with the layout to allow a bit more space and added some more seating. We’ve kept half the line-up of beers from last time but we’re introducing a few newbies to change things up a bit, too. One Mile End, Howling Hops, Two Tribes, Boutilliers, and Anspach & Hobday are a few names joining us for the first time.

HOM: Wow, so breweries from both sides of the river then.

How do you decide which beer brands to work with?

DG: The first time around we simply spread the word and hoped for the best. We were asking folks to participate in an untested event, which is a tricky

commitment for small companies to make. Luckily, we got a great spread geographically and stylistically. This time around we’ve just tried to follow the same blueprint and get the balance right between well-known and upand-coming breweries, as well as those that are local and regional, sessionable and experimental.

AD: We were pretty lucky with the number of breweries that stuck their hand in the air when we mentioned we were running the event again. It boiled down to keeping the number of tasty beers high, whether they came from up-and-coming breweries or those already established.

HOM: Are there any particular beers you recommend people try at the Craft Beer Feast?

AD: There's no one brewery or beer that everyone should run towards. It’s a chance to try some new brews and hopefully find a favourite. The breweries we’ve invited are free to bring down whichever beers they want from their selection – pales, IPAs, sours, stouts, porters – you name it. But hopefully people will find

new styles to love outside their normal order.

HOM: Noted. So how would you recommend people approach the event, to make the most of it?

GB: We recommend coming along, walking around and following your nose – literally.

Last time there was a balsamic vinegar porter and a peanut butter stout that turned heads (and each sold out by 4pm). It’s about getting down early to sniff out the delightfully unusual.

HOM: Finally, what do you hope guests attending the Craft Beer Feast will take away from it?

GB: Great chats and fizzing taste buds.

AD: Not to mention sore feet from dancing, sticky fingers from eating and an empty(ish) wallet from trying all the beers.

See Studio Ghibli's stunning animations on the big screen Studio Ghibli’s 1988 anime film Grave of the Fireflies is showing at Greenwich Picturehouse on August 23, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The screening comes as part of the Picturehouse series: Summer of Ghibli, which is showing some of the Japanese studio’s best work – spanning its 33 year history – across its cinemas.

Directed by Isao Takahata, one of the studios co-founders, the film tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their struggle to survive the final months of the Second World War. Grave of the Fireflies is based on a 1967 semi-autobiographical short story of the same name

by Japanese novelist Akiyuki Nosaka. Set in the city of Kobe,

Japan, the plot follows Seita and his little sister Setsuko, who lose their mother and home when they get caught in the firebombing of Kobe in 1945. The siblings are unable to contact their father, who is on the frontline, so they attempt to flee the country, stealing or begging for food along the way. But with both society and buildings crumbling in front of them, the children are left to fend for themselves.

The film was met with critical acclaim on its release, and critics in the west have even described Grave of the Fireflies as an anti-war film because of the way it focuses almost entirely on personal tragedies and destruction caused by war, rather than attempting to glamorise it as

a heroic battle between nations.

However, director Takahata has repeatedly denied anti-war interpretations, explaining he intended to convey a brother and sister living a failed life due to isolation from society.

Grave of the Fireflies is the last of several popular Studio Ghibli titles to be shown at Greenwich Picturehouse as part of the season. On August 13, Princess Mononoke (2001) was screened.

Set in the time of Japan’s transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era, the movie blends a fantasy quest with social commentary of our times.

The studio’s best-known title in the west, Spirited Away (2003) was also shown, following the story of 10-year-old Chihiro who

loses her grip of life as she knows it when she and her parents stray into the Land of the Spirits.

The studio’s 1989 film Kiki’s Delivery Service was then screened on August 17. It tells the story of a young witch attempting independent living but struggling to fit into a new community when she supports herself by running an air courier service.

Studio Ghibli was established in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki and Yasuyoshi Tokumain in Tokyo, Japan.

The studio is best known for its anime films, seven of which are among the 15 highest-grossing anime films made in Japan.

Spirited Away is the second highest, grossing over $290m

USD worldwide.

Five of the studio’s films have received Academy Award nominations, with Spirited Away winning the award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003.

All films are available to buy individually, or as part of a box set, however due to their visual beauty and stunning animations, it’s well worth trying to catch one on the big screen while you have the chance.

Arts & Entertainment The Churchill Theatre in Bromley is turning back the clocks this weekend, hosting three throwback music nights which will either immerse audiences in a night of Whitney, ABBA or Motown, writes Holly O’Mahony...

“Tribute acts are a regular part of our programming with shows scheduled throughout the year, and we have a particularly strong selection this August,” says Churchill Theatre Director Chris Glover. He’s right – this trio of tribute gems comes hot off the back of Fastlove, a George Michael night taking place at the Churchill earlier this week.

Tribute nights, says Chris, are the next best thing to seeing and hearing the real band live.

“Even if the original bands are still performing and touring, ticket prices can be high and shows are often in huge and far away venues.”

First on the line-up, on August 23, is Thank You for the Music, the international tribute show bringing all of Swedish pop group ABBA’s hits to the stage.

Cleverly timed – given the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in cinemas this summer, which also sees the band’s songs brought to life – the show promises unmistakable harmonies, colourful costumes and a chance to thank ABBA for their music all over again.

The following night, August 24, brings Bromley Whitney – Queen of the Night, a celebration of the music and life of one of the greatest singers of all time: Whitney Houston. The upbeat show will see three decades of her hits performed, including favourites: ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’, ‘One Moment In Time’ and ‘I’m Every Woman’.

Britney Spears live in Greenwich NEWS ALERT: the one and only Britney Spears is playing at the O2 this weekend, with shows scheduled on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The performances comes as part of the pop icon’s ‘Piece of Me’ tour, which brings her Las Vegas show of the same name to audiences across North America and Europe. It’s also rumoured to be the last time Britney will tour the show *sob*.

Britney’s ‘Piece of Me’ show has run for 20 years and been the headlining act at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood in Vegas for a record-breaking four years, since opening there in December 2013. The show features over 20 Britney classics (as well as no less than twelve costume changes).

The pop icon began her 2018 UK tour playing to packed crowds at Brighton Pride earlier this month. She’s since performed in Scarborough, Manchester and Dublin, and will play in Glasgow on Wednesday 22 before touching down at The O2 this Friday.

Britney rose to fame in 1992 aged 11, when she was cast in The Mickey Mouse Club alongside Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling among others.

She went on to launch a solo career and her first two studio albums – Baby One More Time (1999) and Oops!... I Did It Again (2000) – were global successes.

The star quickly became the bestselling teenage artist of all time and she’s since sold over 100 million records worldwide. Known in the 90s as the ‘Princess of

Pop’, Britney has had five number one singles in the US and won numerous awards, including a Grammy and six MTV Video Music Awards.

Much Ado About Greenwich Shakespeare to be performed outdoors in St Alfege Park

Touring theatre company Merely Theatre are performing their new production of Much Ado About Nothing in the open air grounds of St Alfege Park in Greenwich, from August 20 - 26, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The company are experts at staging Shakespeare, having produced 12 of the Bard’s plays so far, including Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night.

“We do have one modern play under our belts,” points out Scott Ellis, the company’s artistic director, referring to their production of Last Man Standing which they produced for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. “Apart from that it has been all Shakespeare. His plays are also so beautifully crafted that every moment is entertaining. He shows us relationships and situations that match our own but on a grander scale,” Scott muses.

“There is always something to relate to, and I think this is why his stories have stood the test of time.”

Why have they chosen to stage Much Ado this summer? “Much Ado is one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays filled with witticisms, miscommunication and lots of opportunity for music,” the latter, Scott says, is an area Merely Theatre is incorporating more of into their shows.

When Merely Theatre first came together several years ago, they were a large group of actors working as a repertory company, performing a different Shakespeare play each month of the year with no costume or set.

“We then evolved into a gender-blind touring repertory of ten actors, from which a cast of five actors would be chosen for each performance,” recalls Scott. “For our 2018 tour just one cast of six actors will perform both of our touring productions: Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth. We are lucky to have a company of actors who are all hungry to learn, develop, and give the audience the clearest and most entertaining version of the plays as possible.”

however, the company’s new director Abigail Anderson as taking over the helm for Much Ado. “Abigail is absolutely marvellous and has added even more detail to the way we work,” says Scott.

“Abigail is extremely experienced in this field, her knowledge of Shakespeare’s work is second to none.”

Having already performed the play outdoors at Aberystwyth and at Open House Festival in Bangor, Northern Ireland, the company is well-prepared to face the challenges that come with performing outside a theatre’s walls. “We asked our set designer to ensure the set was durable enough to stand up to the elements, so we are well prepared!” laughs Scott. “As for the weather, the show must go on – fingers crossed that the wonderful summer we’ve been enjoying continues just a little longer.”

The company also did a recce of St Alfege Park ahead of rehearsals, making sure all aspects of the show would be feasible there. “We’ve done a number of site visits and we will be performing in a wonderfully secluded corner of the park which is enveloped by trees – which really supports the acoustics.”

Good storytelling is at the heart of what Merely Theatre do, Scott explains, and the company invest a lot of energy in immersing their audiences into the world of their shows.

“Clarity of the text and the audience relationship are at the forefront of all of our work… we hope the audience will walk away having understood the play better, and revelled in every beat and moment.”

On top of this, Scott hopes the audience will be swept along by the pace, energy and joy of Much Ado’s uplifting, lighthearted storyline. “After two hours they will hopefully have laughed, cried and had a jolly good time,” he says.

World food lands on The Jetty

I

t takes a good walk along the river to locate the Vagabond Food Café on the jetty, and appears to be one of the first completed builds of a larger construction scheme, that, when it is all finished, will be a wonderful addition to Greenwich’s riverside, writes Michael Holland...

Stepping on to the jetty one is immediately overwhelmed with a feeling of calm. Small boats bob around on their moorings just below us, the sun sets in the distance behind Canary Wharf, and cable cars skim silently overhead. The Vagabond Cafe is in a giant greenhouse filled with the aromas of a thousand plants; some for sale, others just looking good and adding to the aesthetic. There is a lot going on here throughout the day:

cookery classes, yoga classes, horticultural classes and, more importantly, food is served from morning to night.

I was dining with Sarah, a green-fingered psychic who said she felt her aura glowing in this environment, and her chakras re-aligning. I, however, knew it was just after her first glug of rosé that the change occurred.

So, not taking any unnecessary chances with my chakras, I went for a locally brewed Hazey Daze ale.

Taimur, who is in charge here, gave us a tour of the place and talked us around a menu that draws on influences from all over the world. His background, he tells us, is ‘Welsh, Irish and Indian’, plus many years in the restaurant business.

We began with one of Taimur’s own creations, Crispy Avocado

Spheres. I’m not sure that the softness of the fruit holds up to being deep fried but it does add an interesting contrast in texture to the crisp shell.

The tomato chutney it came with brought something else to the dish as well, as it would have been in danger of being too dry.

We also shared Bhel Puri, which Taimur told us was Indian street food consisting of puffed rice, pomegranate, vegetables and tomatoes grown in-house.

Having never heard of this before we jumped at the chance to try, and both agreed it was amazing; the different tastes queued up to let you know they were all there.

had an intriguing sauce whose ingredients I could not work out, but it certainly did a fine job. My favourite, though, was the duck mussaman curry with rice. It was a lot spicier than its Thai counterpart but Taimur explained that he doesn’t want to just recreate dishes, but to ‘deconstruct and experiment’ with them and come up with something different that pays homage to the classics.

During our visit we experienced food originating from Mexico, Japan, Thailand and a new creation from Greenwich, plus a good London beer. We enjoyed our time there.

Sarah will soon be volunteering at the café to help with the horticulture there, in order to get some tips for her own garden, while I’ll be thinking about my return visit to the Vagabond.

LEARN TO TIE KNOTS LIKE A SAILOR SEARCH FOR BATS Calling all brave explorers: grab a torch, put on a sturdy pair of shoes and head to Woodlands Farm for a night walk.
