Where to drink gin and tonics in Greenwich G

in and tonic is known as a quintessentially British drink (despite the fact neither lead ingredient originates from the UK), writes Holly O’Mahony...

It’s up there with country gardens, fish and chips, and stripping off at the first sight of sun when you think of the things we’re known for as a nation. The good news for local fans of the tipple is that Rivington, a bar and restaurant in Greenwich, has practically dedicated this summer to gin.

The Greenwich Weekender caught up with Andrei Oltean, General Manager at Rivington, to find out what’s going on.

“We have 215 gins behind our bar currently, and both our customers and those living locally know us as gin experts and gin enthusiasts,” says Andrei. Ahead of the summer, the team at Rivington transformed the bar’s terrace into a botanical gin garden.

Those who drop in looking for a drink in the sun will find themselves sipping in a space shrouded by a canopy of hanging vines plants and flowers. Rivington also runs a summer weekday happy hour – gin o’clock – offering G&Ts for cheaper than usual between 5-7pm. Each month, a different gin is showcased. For August, it’s Cornish brand Tarquin’s London Dry Gin. The main event in Rivington’s celebration of all things gin is its annual Gin Bop, which is set to return to the bar for the fifth year in a row on August 31. The ticketed event (£10 in advance including a complimentary cocktail) kicks off at 4pm and will include live performances from jazz sensation Marcello Balena Quintet and circus troupe Aircraft Circus, as well as bar games and, of course, plenty of gins to try.

“This year we have some amazing gin brands involved, including Bluecoat, Kyrö,

Bathtub, Sipsmith and Tarquin’s,” says Andrei, adding that the event is starting earlier than usual in order to give visitors a few extra hours of gin tasting. It’s an opportunity for those who like gin but are not necessarily ‘in-the-know’ about the different brands to sample some of the biggest and best names on the market, as well as smaller, niche labels. “Each of our partners will create a special Gin Bop cocktail and serve their own twist on a G&T, so visitors can enjoy a variety of different gin-based drinks.”

According to Andrei, Rivington’s Gin Bop event has seen a real mix of new and returning visitors in the past. “A lot of our visitors are those who have attended in previous years and had a great time, but as gin has become more popular the last couple of years we’ve seen locals and Londoners from further afield attending.”

A highlight, he says, is working with a range of different brands.

“Every brand that gets involved

brings something different, which is really exciting for us and our visitors,” he says.

So, if you’re planning on attending Gin Bop as a newbie, what should you order from the menu? “I’m pretty fond of the Buongiorno cocktail,” Andrei divulges. “It’s made with Beefeater Gin, Campari Bitters, Aperol and Drury Coffeeinfused Cocchi Americano. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and tart flavours, and I think the combination of gin and Aperol is really interesting.”

Those in search of something to soak up their tipples with can look to Rivington’s meat or veggie burgers, which will be available for £8 on the night. Meanwhile if you’re after something lighter, there will also be a selection of three different tasting boards – a meat, fish and veggie option – on sale for £10.

They each sound tasty. The meat board includes parma ham, honey dew melon bruschetta, miniature Yorkshire

puddings with roast beef and horseradish cream, and wild boar chipolatas with mint yoghurt. While over on the fish board you’ll find potted Morecambe Bay shrimps on toast, smoked salmon with crème fraiche bruschetta and prawn arancini. Vegetarians can look forward to a board featuring pear and blue cheese on toast, mozzarella with heirloom tomato and basil skewers and a sundried tomato, olive and caper bruschetta.

“Gin Bop is set to be a wonderful evening of gin drinking, game playing, dancing and good fun – just make sure to organise a lie in for the next day,” advises Andrei.

Al fresco screenings on the Peninsula P

op Up Screens is returning to Greenwich for the fourth year in a row this weekend, bringing with it a line-up of three hugely popular titles from the film world, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The screenings will be held in Greenwich’s Central Park, with Baby Driver getting things off to a flying start on Friday 17th, Bridesmaids bringing in the laughs on Saturday 18th and La La Land winding things down with old-school glamour, romance and memorable songs on Sunday 19th August.

“We love bringing the big screen to Greenwich year after year, there’s a such buzzing and lively atmosphere that makes for a great night of film watching,” says Dave Leydon, who set up Pop Up Screens back in 2011, having realised there was a gap in the market for decent outdoor cinema offerings in the UK. “The films are picked based on how much we think our audience will enjoy them,” Dave explains. “We invest a lot of time into weighing up what has and hasn't worked for us in the past. Our aim is always to give people what they want to see.”

Director Edgar Wright’s 2017 film Baby Driver grossed $226.9 million USD according to box office figures.

a BAFTA and Critics’ Choice award for best editing, and Empire Award for best soundtrack – which featured Bob and Earl’s Harlem Shuffle, the Commodores’ Easy and Simon & Garfunkel’s Baby Driver (which inspired the title of the film). The plot follows Baby (Ansel Elgort), a young and talented getaway driver, who (ironically) lost his parents in a car crash when he was younger. Baby prepares the perfect soundtrack to every job, which he listens to on his iPod – the film’s action synchronising with the soundtrack – as he ferries around a group of bank robbers, to pay off Doc (Kevin Spacey) for stealing one of his cars.

Baby’s keen to leave the criminal world behind, and once he starts dating diner waitress Debora (Lily James), he finds he has all the more reason to escape it.

Even if you haven’t seen Bridesmaids, you’ve probably heard it quoted or seen snippets in meme form (Annie ready to ‘part-ay’ on the plane is a personal favourite).

The incredibly funny 2011 rom-com written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, and directed by Paul Feig, follows singleton Annie (Krisen Wiig) as she struggles to fulfil her Maid of Honour duties in preparation for the wedding of her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph). Bridesmaids grossed $288.4 million USD and

was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards and for Best original Screenplay at the Academy Awards in 2012.

In 2017, La La Land made musical lovers of us all (or most of us, anyway). Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the film follows Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) who begin dating following a series of chance encounters. The pair are both trying

to make it in Hollywood – Mia as an actress and Sebastian as a jazz musician – but as they start to find success in their respective fields, their work begins to pull them in different directions and as their lifestyles change, their relationship begins to fray. In a way, La La Land is as much an ode to Hollywood and the golden era of filmmaking as it is a film in its own right. It grossed $446.1 million USD following its release and won multiple awards;

it won every category for which it was nominated at the 74th Golden Globe Awards – a record-breaking seven wins, and won six Academy Awards that same year, including Best Original Score, Best Director and Best Actress for Stone.

Booking for Pop Up Screens is advised, and screenings will continue to take place even if it rains – so be sure to bring your waterproofs and something warm.

You’ll also want to pack a blanket, beanbag or cushion to sit on, but don’t worry if you don’t have one handy – deckchairs will be available to hire for £4, while those who are feeling fancy an book a VIP seat for £20, which comes with a free drink. Guests can bring their own picnic (although no glass is allowed on site), or you can tuck into popcorn and sourdough wood-fired pizzas from Brightonbased Seaside Pizza Co. ounds of the World is bringing global musicians to Woolwich this Saturday, for the fifth event in their series which aims to transport local audiences around the world through explosive rhythms and hypnotic melodies, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Kathmandu-based folk band Night is headlining the event, and Amharic singer and traditional krar player Haymanot Tesfa will also be performing, accompanied by percussionist Ansuman Biswas.

The Sounds of the World series has been produced as a partnership between Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre and Ganga Thapa, a musician and promoter from south-east London. Ganga explains the focus of the series is on showcasing folk music from across the world. “We chose bands or musicians with a story or musical journey to tell about their roots,” he says. “‘We live in a remarkably diverse society, but sometimes we forget our communities because of lack of time.”

For Nepali folk band the Night, the job is as much about reviving lost and endangered Nepali instruments as it is creating new sounds rooted in Nepali heritage. Meanwhile for Haymanot, who was born and raised in Ethiopia but now lives in England, music is her path to “deep reflection on the dramatic ancient landscapes” of her Ethiopian roots, inspired by the social and religious music of her country.

“I think People will enjoy hearing music which they’ve never heard before,” says Ganga. “Music is one of the strongest ways to connect people and bring communities together.” Following the performances, audiences

A showcase of art in Eltham This weekend, Capital Art Gallery in Eltham is hosting a ‘Bumper Art Weekend’. Artwork selected by gallery owner Karl Sprout will be on show, while on Saturday 18, the gallery is holding an evening of comedy, art and music, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Artists with work being exhibited include Tatiana Radko, a Russian artist based in London who mainly works in oil and canvas, watercolours, or pastel, but also experiments with monotype techniques. The works of Metin Salih – known for his Mad Men-esque background, having illustrated or painted for a large number of brands – will be among the offering on show, too. Paul Kaminski, who’s held over 20 solo exhibitions in Germany over the past ten years, will also be exhibiting his work, as will portrait and life studies specialist

“As the Gallery is attracting more and more international artists, I feel that the public should be made aware that an art gallery portraying these artists is right on their doorstep,” says Karl, who is committed to showcasing work from a diverse range of artists, as well as art being sold at an affordable price point.

“Anyone visiting this exhibition can rest assured that there will be art to adorn any home, all at affordable prices,” he says.

The gallery is open to visitors between 10am - 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Three large rooms will be displaying works of all mediums, ranging from watercolours and pastels to handmade glassware and bronze ceramics.

aught hungry in that in-between-lunchand-dinner time of around 4pm on a Sunday afternoon, I found myself eyeing up the offering of sweet treats on the counter at Paul Rhodes Bakery in Greenwich, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Founded by Michelin-starred chef-turned-baker Paul Rhodes in 2003 (at just 24 years old Paul was Head Chef at the two-Michelin starred restaurant Chez Nico, gaining his third star just a year later), the bakery has a reputation for being a cut above. It supplies handmade breads, cakes and pastries to businesses across the capital, as well as running two neighbourhood bakery shops – the first of which opened in Greenwich around 10 years ago, while the second followed three

years later in Notting Hill.

Feeling just a little bit peckish and conscious not to ‘ruin my appetite’ for dinner, my eyes fell upon the selection of mini baked goods. A perfectly round pecan tart looked like it could fill the void for £2, while a similarly shaped crumble, cheesecake or salted caramel tart – each just £1.50 – were also doing a good job of wooing my hunger.

Meanwhile, a mini corn and jalapeño muffin, also £1.50, was pulling my palate in a more savoury direction.

Then my eyes fell upon a brownie boasting to be the best in the world. Gosh; how could I not? I asked the polite staff serving from behind the counter where the ‘best in the world’ claim came from and they weren’t entirely sure, but added that with Paul’s Michelinstarred past, it was likely to be

founded somewhere. Either way, I was sold. While the brownie looked a little dry on the plate behind the counter, slicing my fork into its centre I found quite the opposite: moist, gooey deliciousness. The slab of brownie is large given how rich it is, yet I didn’t stop digging my fork in for another mouthful until the last morsel was gone.

While taking my time over my chocolatey treat, I scanned the selection of breads available to take home. Seeded, sourdough and enjoying-a-moment rye bread were among the offering, with most loaves coming in small (£2.80) or large (£4.80) sizes. The most expensive loaf – at £5.59 – was a premium combination of all three of the above: a seeded, rye sourdough fusion.

Paul Rhodes bakery also has a decent coffee menu, with

a comprehensive chalkboard explaining what each familiar drink consists of. For example, did you know a flat white is half coffee, half milk? While a latte is a quarter coffee, three quarters milk and a little foam? I didn’t, but arguably because I always order an Americano (yours here for £2.20) – the weaker cousin of the long black. Being peak heatwave during the time of my visit, I switched up my regular order for an iced coffee, which came in a glass jar and with a paper straw – appropriate, given the current war on plastic. In fact, returning customers might want to purchase a Paul Rhodes 100% biodegradable, insulated coffee cup and lid, too.

The decor here is certainly not stylish, with grey tiled floors, wooden (or faux wooden) counter tables and stools by way of seating. It’s certainly not

a place you’d come in search for a cosy, comfy cuppa. That said, the manager pointed out to me that business has increased significantly since the seating was added several years ago.
