series, the arena tour has been to over 250 countries. Now the $20 million production has evolved with changes to the dinosaurs, including feathering, based on the latest scientific research.

Michaela plays palaeontologist Huxley, interacting onstage with

the animatronic models, which took a team of 50 engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists, painters and animatronic experts a year to build. “I’m the only human you can see onstage,” Michaela told the Weekender.

“Each of the dinosaurs is life-

sized. It’s a little bit scary, particularly when they’re fighting and you have all these crests and horns and tails and it’s really realistic,” she continued.

Michaela had seen YouTube clips of previous Walking with Dinosaurs shows, but says

there’s “nothing like seeing it for real.” “It doesn’t do it justice.

There’s so many talented and creative people involved.”

Each dinosaur has three people controlling it: one driver and two voodoo operators. “There’s a driver inside the dinosaur,

“I trained in musical theatre, that was where the path was leading me, then I fell into children’s Saturday morning television, then fell into wildlife TV. That was 28

years ago, and over that time I’ve learned an awful lot.” Michaela went on to report for BBC1's Countryfile, and co-presented the Orangutan Diary with Steve Leonard. “My passion has grown as I’ve learned but I never call myself an expert. I say I’m a

wildlife enthusiast,” she said. “I’m constantly learning.”

Explore the 'splendidly ugly' One of the greatest private art collections ever assembled in Europe is on display at the newly reopened Ranger’s House in Greenwich.

Medieval jewellery, gothic sculptures, Italian ceramics, Renaissance paintings, 18th century French furniture, and British portraits are among some of the 700 pieces on show, writes Laura Burgoine..

The collection showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of artists working across Europe.

English Heritage, which cares for the property, has refreshed the visitor experience at Ranger’s House. After previously being open for guided tours only, the galleries are open to the public on a free-flow basis from Sunday to Wednesday during the summer so visitors can enjoy the outstanding artworks at their own pace. The charity has also installed new interpretation based on new research to better tell the story of the Wernher Collection and highlight the outstanding quality of its objects.

The collection is displayed across eleven period rooms and includes a series of ‘star objects’ that visitors will be invited to find out more about. Highlights

include a gold earring in the shape of Victory, the Greek goddess of war, which dates back to 2 BC, an exquisitely-carved pendant in the shape of a skull from around 1500, a glittering silver gilt, steel and nautilus shell cup and an enamelled jug depicting the Greek god Triton.

Dr Sarah Moulden, Curator of Collections at English Heritage, said: “The Wernher Collection is one of the greatest private collections of art ever assembled in Europe, and is unique in both its quality and breadth. Many of the works are extremely rare and unique examples of their kind. Displayed together, their individual stories reveal much about the making, meaning and movement of art objects on a world stage.

“Sir Julius Wernher had a distinct eye for quality and

Most of the ivories, metalwork, woodcarvings and enamels you can see at Ranger’s embody these characteristics. And in their iconography, intended functions and histories, they encapsulate universal human concerns such as love and death, storytelling and devotion, beauty and identity.”

The Wernher Collection was originally displayed at Bath House, Wernher’s London townhouse in Piccadilly, and his country estate, Luton Hoo in

Bedfordshire. After the closure of Luton Hoo in the 1990s, the opportunity arose for English Heritage to work with the Wernher Foundation to display a large part of the collection at Ranger’s House on a 125 year loan.

English Heritage acquired Ranger’s in 1986 after its own historic collections had long been dispersed, and although Wernher never lived at the house, photographs showing how he displayed the collection in his own homes have informed how the rooms and objects are presented at Ranger’s today.

Phoenix Community Housing hosted a public consultation in 2016, in order to see what the community wanted from the new space, and received about 1,400 responses from the surrounding area.

The consultation revealed that the majority of people wanted a cinema, since they would otherwise have to travel to other neighbourhoods, sometimes as far as Surrey Quays or Orpington.

The Fellowship is saturated in history: It was built in the 1920s as part of the Homes for

Heroes developments, which were intended to alleviate urban crowding in central London after WWI, and it contained the first pub in a social housing estate in London. In 1963, Henry Cooper lived and trained in the Fellowship leading up to his fight with Muhammad Ali. The

Fellowship has also hosted the musical legends Fleetwood Mac and Eric Clapton.

The Greenwich Comedy Festival is returning for its tenth year in September, with Russell Howard and Aisling Bea among the host of big name stand-ups set to perform, writes Brooke Manning...

The 2018 line-up includes: Russell Howard, Adam Buxton, Ed Byrne, Milton Jones, Nina Conti, James Acaster, Zoe Lyons, Henning When, Aisling Bea, Joe Wilkinson, Lolly Adefope, David O’Doherty, Reginald D Hunter, Shappi Khorsandi, Nish Kumar, Rob Delaney, Stephen K Amos and Ed Gamble.

The festival was originally organised in 2009 by the sibling team Will Briggs and Cass Randolph, the step-children of comedian Malcolm Hardee.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since we started the festival,” the pair said. “At first we didn’t really know what shape it would take.”

“We basically grew up in Greenwich’s famous Up the Creek comedy club, and we wanted to bring the energy of a traditional club to a big and beautiful festival setting,” “We didn’t dare to dream that we’d still be doing this ten years on, and we’re excited to see how it evolves in the next ten.”

Keeping the home fires burning - how women kept the gas works going during the Great War Recently because of the centenary of the Great War there have been many articles on the role, identity and fates of soldiers and others who fought.

Many of the men who joined up had worked in industry and production needed to continue, despite the War, and jobs suddenly vacant. One industry which it was thought important to keep in full production for the war effort was coal gas used for heating and lighting. Locally in Greenwich and Woolwich, as indeed in South London generally, gas works were owned by the South Metropolitan Gas Company based at the Old Kent Road works, but with several other works in the area. Their largest site was the great East Greenwich Works on the Greenwich Peninsula. In the first days of the Great War in 1914 nearly 1000 men left their jobs in the South Metropolitan Company's works to join the forces and this was eventually to number 3000. Even before war was declared ambulance men from the Company’s works were mobilised and sent abroad.

The Company was able to call back some men who had joined but they were those with special skills – for example an expert in tar distillation who, having left military service, toured the country training chemists in other gas works.

It was clearly difficult for the gas company to lose so many of its staff so quickly and replacements needed to be found. In time offering jobs to women was considered. We have heard about the role of women in the Royal Arsenal in the Great War, but they were not alone. In all probability women worked in many industries and their roles can only be guessed at. We are lucky that South Metropolitan not only continued to produce their house magazine throughout the war but also eventually published a commemorative supplement.

In it we find the women and their roles described, but as they say, to start with the employment of women in the gas works meant ”not only prejudice … but lack of belief in the results which could be obtained”.

The first women were recruited in June 1915 as index readers – a job where they would meet the public, visit homes and shops, thus performing a public relations role for the Company. Others were given jobs in gas showrooms, and soon these shops were entirely run by women workers.

a job requiring great tact and patience in wartime as shortages grew, repairs were done late and customers became angry.

Women were then recruited to work as clerks in company offices - cashiers’ offices, engineering departments and as ‘personal’ clerks to officials – which sounds very much the sort of office work which became standard ‘women’s work’ later in the century. They also began to work for the maintenance department doing repairs, including to equipment in customer’s homes. One of the most successful roles for women was collecting money from slot meters. This they did much more successfully than male collectors and it was strongly considered that they should be kept on in this role at the end of the war. Women described as ‘girl graduates’ worked in the greatly expanded Chemical Laboratories, and as the war progressed chemical production and chemical invention became an important part of the war effort. They also took on precision assembly work in meter making departments These first jobs given to women by the gas industry were all ones in which women could appear respectable and ladylike, wear

ordinary street clothes and behave with what would be considered then as decorum. A ‘Lady Superintendent’ was recruited to generally oversee their work and liaise with management.

This was all to change.

Women were soon to enter the manufacturing areas of the Gas Works initially in the chemical departments and stores. In 1917 three women were recruited to work as fire rakers in a coke hole. They learnt the work so quickly and were so proficient that they were soon taken for work in the retort houses. Work here was at the very heart of the Gas Works where the gas was made.

Coal was put into ovens – called retorts – and heated so that the gas was expelled and removed to be processed and cleaned.

This was extremely hot, dirty and heavy work generally done by men of ‘Herculean’ build. But so successful were these ‘coal be-grimed jersey-clad women stokers’ that by early 1918 two of them had been appointed as ‘forewomen’ responsible for the working of the entire retort house - and it would be interesting to know if they supervised men as well as women and how men reacted to that.

Women also did much of the general labouring in the gas works and there is a description of them cleaning a barge in heavy mud at East Greenwich. They also shifted the heavy sacks of coke. Publicity pictures show them wheeling loads of chemicals, working with blacksmiths and working on top of gasholders.

Outside of the works women learnt to shoot at the company’s rifle range – to ‘protect themselves against the Hun’.

In contemporary reports and publications there are many expressions of surprise at how quickly and efficiently the women undertook this work. There were however reassurances to men returning from military duty that their jobs would still be available with the assumption that the women would go and this proved to be the case.

Who were these women who undertook this heavy and often dangerous work? Initially the gas company had looked to the families of gas works staff. It was an industry which tended to recruit from known ‘gas families’ even in peacetime. It is probable that many of them were the wives and sisters of male gas workers recruited into the army. It is also

very probable that there was a class difference between those women who worked as clerks and those who worked in the retort houses. A woman stoker is described as ‘an old friend of laundry or bottling days’ whose speech is ‘ungrammatical’. A reflection perhaps that normal peacetime lives for some working class women would have included a lot of very heavy labour.

In 1920 the gas company printed a list of those among its staff who had received war time awards.

Under ‘Order of the British Empire – medallists’ are seven names.

One – the only man listed – is Frederick Innis, the valvesman who saved the gas supply after the Silvertown explosion. The other six medallists are all women about whom I know nothing. It would be very interesting to know what their contribution was and if it equalled Innis’s heroic act in face of great danger and why we know nothing about them and what they did. With no first names given they are: Mrs E.Birch, Miss M. Joyce, Miss M Knight, Miss A.Rate, Miss C.Smith and Miss M Wheeler – and they probably came from the Kennington Area.

Perhaps we should note a brief mention of Miss Wheeler co-opted onto a works committee in 1919, but that is all.

There is a great deal of information about the contribution made by women gas workers during the Great War in Company records and in the Company workplace magazine during the period of the war. Later they seem to have been forgotten. A longer and more recent article appears in The Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society's, London’s Industrial Archaeology, No6.

Over 350 beers on offer at Deptford bar

Come and sample some of our beers, they said. Don’t mind if I do, I said back.

And that’s how myself and cider aficionado Rene ended up at Hop Burns and Black in the newly refurbished arches by Deptford Station, writes Michael Holland...

Hop Burns and Black is basically a posh off licence that kind of doubles up as a bar, with young Joris behind the counter imparting excellent beer and cider knowledge on anyone who asked. And I had lots of questions. I discovered that Hop Burns and Black is the brainchild of New Zealand couple, Jen and Glenn, who obviously love their beer and, strangely, hot sauce.

Along with more beers that you can shake a cocktail stick at, they have a wide selection of sauces concocted from the world’s hottest chilies, and they are not for the weak. They also sell chili snacks that come with their own warning.

Firstly I concentrated on the London breweries and began my beer journey with a Napa Brut IPA, a refreshing 6.3% from Gipsy Hill Brewery. It was not as dry as it made out but whetted my appetite for more. My drinking companion opted for a Telegraph Hill Cider and remarked that every one of its 5% was good.

Joris gave us a quick lesson on how they combine the hops and apples, which was both intriguing and made the drinking of it all the more enjoyable.

Keeping with the summery, pale ale vibe, I had a Brew by Numbers DDH Pale Ale, No. 3.

This was a cloudy, hazy beer (5.8%), with citrussy notes.

Very nice, and all the way from Bermondsey. Rene’s next choice was Oliver’s Fine Cider(5.5%).

This was quite hoppy as well as fruity, and was almost like a sweet wine.

By now local couple Tom and Sophie had joined our table.

Sophie had followed suit rather then become a beer widow. Tom spoke in a language that few would understand, just that select tribe of home brewers who know all the names of hop varieties.

It was now time for me to step out of my comfort zone with an Indian Porter from Kernel Brewery - the catalyst for so many breweries in Bermondsey, and ultimately, the Bermondsey Beer Mile. This was a dark, thick, almost broth-like liquid that had excellent viscosity. Not a drink for the heatwave, really, but oh so nice.

Rene’s London Mead (5.5%) was also a step away from what had gone before. This was rather flat - as it should be - but very tasty.

I moved away from London for a Shattered Dream, a salted chocolate caramel ale from Siren Brewery. The sweetness in the chocolate undertones belied the stout’s 9.1%. It had a wow factor.

Rene went for the Revenant Cider (4.5%), that she deemed ‘really nice’.

And so we neared the end of our tour of some of the best breweries around. Tom and Sophie stumbled off to their

flat by the creek while me and Rene tried to focus on the job at hand and not see double. She had another Revenant, because it was so nice, while I chose a sensible 4.2% Five Points Field Day Citrus Pale that left a satisfying aftertaste that I took with me on the train home. Rene was last seen pushing her bike down Deptford High Street.

Hop Burns and Black is the connoisseurs’ off licence. With over 350 of the world’s finest beers, do not expect to get a sixpack of Carling. In fact, if Carling did off licences it would be like Hop Burns and Black, and each one would have its own Joris.

Mind over matter How you can overcome stress with meditation Greenwich mindfulness instructor Kelly Robson teaches children and adults the art of Zen and has spoken to the Weekender about her work, writes Laura Burgoine...

What is a mindfulness instructor? What does your job involve?

The job itself consists, beyond actual teaching, of setting up courses, marketing, lots of reading and CPD, and most importantly a strong personal meditation practice.

My studies have been ongoing with the Bangor University Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice, part of the university’s School of Psychology, and I work under supervision of one of its faculty members.

How do you teach mindfulness to kids?

I come into schools to teach after-school clubs, assemblies, wellness days, and so on.

My favourite group to teach is Years 5 and 6 (ages 9 and 10). They see the usefulness of mindfulness practice, as they face so much pressure from exams, sports, music and drama performance, changing bodies and strong emotions,

peer pressure, etc, etc, etc.

Teachers also find that they benefit from learning mindfulness and establishing a meditation practice.

I’m qualified to teach the children’s curricula developed by the Mindfulness in Schools Project for primary and secondary students, and teachers.

Can anyone, at any age, start meditating? What’s a good way to start?

I believe that barring serious mental illness anyone can benefit from meditation, but no one should be compelled; it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s very simple in theory, but difficult to get a handle on in practice. Most people find that their minds are very busy, so as they begin to meditate thoughts start streaming in: ‘I’m too busy for this, it’s boring, I can’t sit still, I’m not doing it right, it’s not for me, my foot is itchy, I should be doing something else, what’s wrong with me? What’s for lunch?’ The instruction is simply to watch these thoughts raining down and ‘stand behind the waterfall’.

Choose something to focus on, like the breath in the belly or the nose, or the sensations of the body as you sit, walk or do yoga

Kelly Robson meditation instructor and stay with it for a period of time, maybe 10 or 20 minutes.

Each time the mind wanders or you get caught up in thinking, gently come back to your object of focus, without judgement or self-criticism.

What are the main benefits of mindfulness and meditation? What would you say to people who don’t get it, or understand the point of meditating?

There are loads of benefits from meditation! Someone described

it beautifully by saying it’s like putting shock absorbers on a rickety car. You begin to be less stressed about the pressures of everyday life, you begin to detach yourself from the running commentary about the past and the future (rumination), you begin to see your unhelpful and automatic patterns of thought, your concentration strengthens so that decisions can be made from clear thinking rather than impulse, and so on.

The main benefit to me, and one of the reasons teaching is such a joy, is when the realisation dawns that you can look after yourself as kindly as you do your friends and your children. Most of us judge ourselves pretty harshly.

Meditation can also allow us to live more comfortably with pain: the arthritis in my hands is still painful but it doesn’t bother me as much as it used to.

To those who don’t get it, I’d say just give it a go and see what happens. There are a lot of resources out there now, like the Headspace and Buddhify apps, books like Finding Peace in a Frantic World (with guided meditations included) by Professor Mark Williams and Danny Penman, and websites like www.bemindful.co.uk and Breathworks.

Where do you teach?

I’ve been teaching in Greenwich and Central London for about six years. I teach an eight-week mindfulness course to adults each term at Mycenae House, plus one-to-one sessions with private clients, corporate wellness, university staff and academics, and for five years I’ve even provided mindfulness taster sessions at a summer festival in Grosvenor Square. I guide meditation practice retreats and monthly drop-in practice evenings; plus, of course, my work with students and teachers at schools.

How long have you been meditating?

I’ve meditated on and off (mostly off) since university (a long time ago) with a vague feeling it was good for me. When I was made redundant from my publishing job in 2011, a friend suggested doing an eight-week mindfulness course as a participant and it resonated so strongly that I decided to make it a large part of my life. I’ve been studying, training and teaching ever since.
