Purple reign

Prince's keyboardist and musical director brings tribute concert to The O2

Prince fans, get ready to party like it’s 1999 with New Power Generation. Prince’s backing band, who toured, wrote and recorded with the iconic multi-Grammy award winning artist, has reunited and is performing at the O2, writes Laura Burgoine...

NPG’s longest running member, keyboardist Morris Hayes , who was also Prince’s musical director for years, talks to the Weekender about the legend, the music, and the five personas of Prince.

This gig is inspired by the 2016 tribute concert to Prince held, just after his death at age 57, in the grounds of the singer’s private estate Paisley Park, in Minnesota.

“The fans seem as excited as we are, and we’re happy about that,” Morris told the Weekender. “We were there in London last year for an outdoor festival and this is the first time going back with NPG.

We’ll have some of the staple hits that we do but we try to spread a bit of other things in there. I put a lot of care into the set list; I don’t try to make it too crazy but I switch it up a bit.”

The original tribute concert ran for over five hours, and still fans wanted more. “Prince had just passed away and this was a testament to how deep Prince’s musical powerhouse is,” Morris said. “He has so much music that people gravitate to; the hardest part of my job is to figure out which songs to include.”

Playing onstage without their leader is “emotional.” “Doing that tribute really turned on a switch for me, seeing people reacting and how powerful the music is, and knowing Prince’s legacy is going to be preserved,” Morris said. “He is an amazing artist.

That music is going to be here forever. We play Purple Rain and

we remember those different moments with him. Sometimes it’s cool, and sometimes it really hits you, especially with the emotion of the crowd.”

“When we played Purple Rain in rehearsal before the last trip we went on, we were really solemn and some people were crying.”

Morris got his big break in 1990 when Jerome Benton asked him to play keyboards with the Time. He was hired to replace Jimmy Jam and in ’91 he toured Asia with the Time and, at the end of the tour, Morris and a good friend formed a band called G Sharp and the Edge.

They were the backing band for Prince’s new nightclub Glam Slam; Prince recognized their immense talent and hired the entire band to play with Carmen Electra on his Diamonds & Pearls tour in 1992. After the tour, Prince asked Morris to officially join the NPG as another keyboard player alongside

Tommy Barbarella.

Morris left the NPG for a few years to tour with renowned saxophonist Maceo Park and returned in 2005, performing with Prince during his memorable 2007 Super Bowl halftime performance in Miami. Morris remained in the NPG until late 2012. During this run, he took over the famously demanding role of Prince’s musical director. “I figured out there were five different Princes and when I knew which one I was dealing with, it was fine,” Morris said. “Number one was the first Prince I came to see when I saw Purple Rain, two is the one I saw when I got asked to be in the band and we started rehearsing and I realised: this guy is intense. Three was we could play basketball and joke about each other’s Moms and play pranks on each other. Four was the sad Prince; he was not happy.

And five was the one where I said

to myself ‘this is the guy who would give you the shirt off his back.’ A dear man. If somebody in the band had someone pass away, he’d get hold of them and say “I’ll pay for it”.”

“I learned to see which one showed up on any given day. I’m a joker too. Sometimes I’d be joking and he’d be in a different mode and you’d get your neck cut off.

When he would speak, I’d know which Prince it was, and then I’d do my thing,” Morris continued.

“Maybe that’s why I stayed so long.

He had great keyboardists; I wasn’t the best of them.”

The musician describes working with Prince as “constant boot camp.” “He was always in teach mode. He always said “I’m hard and tough because I want you all to be great.” That was a big thing,” Morris said.

So, was it talent or hard work that made Prince a legend?

“It was a combination. Definitely he had a gift from God, where he was just hit with a lightning bolt but it was also him working on it on a daily basis. He never shut down.

He never did nothing, he never rested,” Morris said. “I remember one time I went to speak to him, it was pretty intense, and I suggested he take a week off. He came back after that week and called me on the intercom to come to his office and I was like “oh, I’m in big trouble, man” but he just said “I appreciated you coming in and talking to me last week. It’s the first week I’ve not picked up my guitar or written a song. I chilled out, vegged out and collected my thoughts.” He did not have an off switch.”

Prince was well known for his perfectionism and high level of professionalism. He came from the school of: the show must go on. “He broke his toe once and he still went on and performed this show, even though he was in writhing pain. Then he jumped off the piano and hit that foot but he was a trooper; he kept going.”

working for Prince. “That could be any number of things, us watching television; we watched a lot of sports, MMA fighting.

He loved to laugh. I looked for comedy in everything. We would die laughing. Some days we’d be in the studio, some days just watching a movie. He looked at us like family. His bands were like his family.”

Morris has now moved back to his hometown in Arkansas and travels to Minnesota whenever the band rehearses.

“I left home at 19, I lived in LA. Now I’m back in Arkansas looking after my folks; they’re getting up in their years and my Mum suffers from dementia,” he said. “Most people don’t know me. I’m fairly introverted, a homebody. Being in the band was my whole life for 20 years, I went out all the time, now it’s cool to be here. It’s a much quieter life.”

our mission, should you choose to accept it, is to uncover the minibeasts of Greenwich Park this summer.

Young bug enthusiasts can learn all about the amazing minibeasts that call London’s parks home as the Royal Parks charity’s Mission: Invertebrate initiative goes on the road. On August 2 and 21, Mission Invertebrate is coming to Greenwich Park.

The free family events include critter crafting, bug hunting and story-telling throughout the month of August.

Mission: Invertebrate aims to raise public awareness of the vital role these creatures, which include snails, worms, spiders and insects, play in our ecosystem. With many native species of invertebrates under threat, the project, which is supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery, hopes to get people involved in conservation work to help them thrive.

Families can uncover the fascinating secrets of a host of invertebrate, through bug hunting, critter crafting and interactive storytelling at each of the capital’s eight Royal Parks: St James’s Park,

The Green Park, The Regent’s Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Greenwich Park, Richmond Park and Bushy Park.

Activities are on offer between 11am and 3pm, and are free with no booking required.

Britain's Got Talent winners step on stage with Barry Manilow

Musical theatre group Collabro shot to fame after winning the eighth season of ITV talent show Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) in 2014, writes Laura Burgoine...

Now, they’re hanging out with Cliff Richard and opening for Barry Manilow’s arena tour. Jamie Lambert talks to the Weekender ahead of performing at Greenwich’s O2 arena.

“Musical theatre speaks to so many people,” Jamie said.

“We have a massive range of people come to our shows.

Sometimes a granddaughter, mother, and daughter because the music spans generations.”

The foursome, made up of Jamie Lambert, Michael Auger, Matthew Pagan and Thomas J. Redgrave, released their debut album Stars in August 2014 and debuted at number one in the UK. Now,

the band is back in the studio working on their fourth album: Road to the Royal Albert Hall, which they’ll be taking on the road for a 51-date tour in 2019.

“The tour ends at the Royal Albert Hall. We’ve headlined there a few times. It’s fabulous, the most wonderful place and such a historic venue” Jamie said.

The new album features music from Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Billy Elliot, and Grease. “There’s every major musical you can think of and Never Enough from the Greatest Showman,” Jamie said. “We’re very proud of it.”

Early on, the band did some pop crossovers before returning to their musical theatre roots. They founded their own record label Peak Productions in 2017, when they released their third album Home. “We have a lot more control with our own record

label,” Jamie said. “We were the only artists who selfreleased and ended up in the top ten on the charts. This time it’s not as chart focused, it’s more part of a big tour. We wanted to do an album that complemented the tour.”

Jamie’s personal favourite musical is Les Miserables.

“We’ve done every song from Les Mis. We sang Stars in our first audition for Britain’s Got Talent, then Bring Him Home for the semi-finals. Now we have On my Own on the new album.”

Collabro paved the way for musical theatre groups the world over. “Since we came out, various musical theatre groups have come out. It’s something the industry was waiting for,” Jamie said. “Il Divo were more opera. The, stars all lined up, and four years down the road, we’re making our fourth major

album.”

The band only formed one month before their audition for Britain’s Got Talent. “Originally we planned to perform on cruises but we needed a bigger audience. Since we’ve done it, there’s a lot of cruise ship groups who do the same,” Jamie said.

Collabro’s first ever rehearsal space was in the rooms above the Miller pub in London Bridge. “They were really nice to us. We hired the space to rehearse because we didn’t live in the same area; we all took a week off work, and met there,” Jamie said. “We had our first ever photoshoot there. The people were lovely.

Sometimes they’d come up and listen to us.”

Two years ago the band met Cliff Richard who asked them to special guest on his summer tour. “Now Cliff just turns up randomly to our gigs,” Jamie

said. “We did a residency at Pizza Express and one night Cliff turned up backstage and surprised us. And we went to a house party his friend had organised and Tony Blair rocked up.”

Next up, the quartet is joining Copacabana singer and music legend Barry Manilow on his arena tour in September. “It’s super cool,” Jamie said. “I’ve always really admired Barry.”

“Barry’s huge, we were super keen,” he continued. “He’s so busy and ridiculously famous.

We’re in awe. We’re playing shows at Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, and then three nights at the O2 arena, so we’re really excited for that.”

Collabro is the special guest at Manilow-Live in London at the O2 arena on September 6, 7 and 8.

From Bulla to Bromley

W

e all know Ricky Grover from TV roles that range from Bulla to Red Dwarf, right through Eastenders to Porridge, but not many people are aware that he does stand up, or that many of the big comedy names doing arena tours now were previously his warm up acts, writes Michael Holland...

Although Grover is an East Londoner through and through, he was a regular at Up The Creek comedy club in Greenwich, and a good friend of the proprietor Malcolm Hardee there, so he knows he will get a warm SE London welcome over this side of the water when he steps on stage.

Ricky left school destined for building sites and skullduggery because he could barely read or write, but when a friend told him he would meet more women as a hairdresser he made a quick career change. Crimping, though, hardly matched his hardman boxer image (he won the London Federation title) so it led to an early-life crossroads crisis and a Life Training course that he feels really did change his life.

At the course’s end he decided he wanted to be an actor.

Ricky joined a local drama class at The Tom Allen Centre where he winged it a lot of the time, eventually saying he had a play

Ricky left school destined for building sites and skullduggery because he could barely read or write written for his end of year show.

He couldn’t even write! Come the time, he told the tutors that it was 28 minutes long, which they said wasn’t long enough. “What else are you going to do?” they asked.

“I do comedy as well,” he lied, “so the second half will be stand up.”

He filled the theatre out with friends and family and put together a short play about boxing (that he mostly improvised on the spot) and a stand up comedy set. The play was made into a short film called Punch, and won awards, so the rest, as they say, is history. Plus, one of the tutors at the drama class taught him how to read and write, and going by how legendary he is across Twitter, he must have been a

good student.

It seems that Ricky has experience of saying and doing what is necessary to get the job done, which is a method that has served him well, bringing acting awards and regular work.

He is an honest man, well aware of his faults and anxieties, and can see right through the barriers people put up to hide behind. His comedy : “‘I only did comedy to get an Equity card” he tells me, “is getting on stage and dropping your guard to reveal your insecurities, and when people see you do that, they can relate to it, because everyone has insecurities.” I wanted to say I didn’t, but he would’ve seen right through me!

Talking about his time on Eastenders, Ricky says it helped him over worrying about his

dyslexia because on the show he discovered he could learn lines and learn them quick enough to keep up with the schedule of that programme.

He revealed that he had turned it down previously because of dyslexia anxiety, but is glad he finally did it.

When he’s not working, Ricky enjoys walking his dogs in the woods and waiting to see what will happen next in the way of work. In the pipeline is a pilot with Channel 4’s comedy department “about some villains that ain’t very good at it”, a new series of Zapped, out soon on Dave: “It’s a bit of a nutty one; I’m the head of the fairies, with little wings on,” he warns me. And he is in talks to turn a podcast about depression he is involved with into a TV show. Plus, there could even be a sequel of Big Fat Gypsy Gangster, that he wrote with his wife. He promises that if it comes off it will be more outrageous and daring than the first one! “So I’ve got a few things on the go,” he concludes, “but all I really try to do is enjoy every day.”

To achieve that Ricky recommends not being bitter and always trying to keep happy “because life is so short” and claims he loves dogs more than people, “cos they don’t let you down and their love is unconditional.”

There is a disarming honesty about Ricky Grover; he is so unguarded that he lets secrets out - off the record - in his anecdotes. He spoke highly of Malcolm Hardee and how Malcolm gave him a lot of work when he was starting out, even though, as Ricky tells it, “I used to scare some of the posh ones in the Up The Creek audience because I was very aggressive and used to offer people out…

They didn’t realise it was my act!” His honesty has the effect of disarming the listener, so I too was caught off guard and nearly let my defences down.

There is a soft side to the ‘hard man’ Ricky Grover; he has a lot of nice things to say about a lot of people and I could have spoken to him all day but life took over and we had to move on. I left it to him to finish on his upcoming show, in which he tops a bill of Mike Gunn and Ross McGrane. He spoke of his admiration for the show’s young promoter trying to get comedy out there “and earn a pound note” and how funny his fellow performers are.

That’ll do to end because I know he means it.

Summer things to do

Legoland Windsor has opened its first ever beach (don’t worry, it’s not made of plastic bricks) as part of its two-month long Summer of Fun. There will be beach parties built just for kids at the 10m long sandy beach, with activities for all of the family.

It has also unveiled its first ever 20 tonne sand sculpture of a family of huge Lego Minifigures enjoying the beach.

Families can enjoy the new attraction on deckchairs or blankets and cool down with an ice cream from the ice cream stand.

There are also plenty of watery activities to help families stay cool, including Splash Safari, Drench Towers and Pirate Falls.

Summer things to do eiGhteeN MAssiVe dinosaur animatronics and tV presenter Michaela strachan will be coming to the O2 with Walking with Dinosaurs – the Arena spectacular.

The most recent version of the show includes changes to the dinosaurs, since scientific research has provided more insight into what the creatures looked like, including brighter colours and potential feathers.

The show, which lasts 100 minutes, includes interactions between the dinosaurs and the changing climate from the arid Triassic period to the greener Jurassic.

Huxley the paleontologist, played by Michaela Strachan, helps guide viewers along. The rest of the production team includes names such as Scott Faris, who has directed Broadway shows such as Les Misérables, Cabaret, Cats, and Grease, and Sonny Tilders, who has designed creatures and animatronics for Star Wars and The Chronicles of Narnia.

“Many of the technologies we are using on Walking with Dinosaurs are borrowed from film,” said Sonny Tilders. “To make it appear that these creatures are flesh and blood weighing six, eight or even 20 tons, we use a system called ‘muscle bags,’ made from stretch mesh fabric and filled with polystyrene balls, stretched across moving points on the body. These contract and stretch in the same manner that muscle, fat, and skin does on real creatures.”

“The puppeteers use ‘voodoo rigs’ to make many of the dinosaurs move,” Tilders continued. “They are miniature versions of the dinosaurs with the same joints and range of movement as their lifesized counterparts.”

“The puppeteer manipulates the voodoo rig, and these actions are interpreted by computer and transmitted by radio waves to make the hydraulic cylinders in the

actual dinosaur replicate the action, with a driver hidden below the animal, helping to maneuver it around the arena.”

The largest dinosaur is the Brachiosaurus, which is 11m in height and 17m long, with each large dinosaur requiring three people to operate it.

Dinosaurs at the O2 FAstlOVe, a tribute to late pop star George Michael, will be running at the lyric theatre West end this autumn.

The tribute show will feature hits such as Father Figure, Jesus to a Child, Freedom, I’m Your Man, Wake Me Up, and Faith.

New for the 2018 shows, Ed Barker, who performed the saxophone solo in Cowboys and Angels on George Michael’s ‘Symphonica Tour’ in 2012, will join for select tour dates.

George Michael rose to fame in the duo Wham! before becoming a solo artist in the 1980s and 1990s.

He was found dead on Christmas Day in 2016.

Fastlove – A George Michael Tribute will be coming to the Lyric Theatre on October 15, November 5, and December 3, with shows starting at 7:30pm.

kosos si harriet Mackenzie lives in Brockley and grew up with a father obsessed with opera “listening to wonderful opera singers such as caruso,” writes Michael Holland...

She was “very lucky to be taken to lots of concerts and be exposed to the incredible canon of chamber music: Beethoven and Mozart String quartet, Ravel...I loved the sense of a door opening on this extraordinary aural landscape and being taken somewhere totally different. I wish that more children had this opportunity,” Ms Mackenzie told the Weekender.

“I was obsessed with the sound of the violin and from the age of three I campaigned my parents to be able to start learning it!” The teacher, Sheila Nelson, had a long waiting list but Harriet was able to start her training at five. That little girl in love with the violin went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban where she met Meg Hamilton (viola), and Milos Milivojevic (accordion) and the three musicians decided to form the Kosmos Ensemble.

“We thought it would be wonderful to play together, to explore the sounds, to study different traditions and styles from around the globe, to compose and to improvise with these influences. Having had a

totally 'classical' training, I had never improvised. Suddenly I found myself on stage with Kosmos but without sheet music, playing our own compositions, and improvising using our classical training and composition techniques with roots music as our inspiration,” Harriet said. “I was deliriously happy and terrified in equal measure but when the lights dim and the audience is waiting expectantly, there is nothing quite like the frisson of composing in real time in front of a discerning crowd.”

Ten years on, Kosmos have explored Balkan music, Arabic music, Japanese folk songs, Gypsy music, jazz, and have recorded two albums whilst performing all over the world and in places that have little access to live music: prisons, special schools, mainstream schools and homes for older people.

Now the trio are once again returning to Rotherhithe’s St Mary’s Church playing a special fundraiser gig. The proceeds from this concert will fund the band’s next album. Harriet says: “It is a beautiful church with great acoustics and a unique atmosphere; there is something very special about performing in an intimate church such as this.”
