Exciting things are happening at the Royal Naval College

When you have an architectural masterpiece on your doorstep, you can become so used to its presence you might almost forget it’s there. Here to prevent this happening in the case of the Old Royal Naval College is the heritage site’s CEO, Angela McConville.

T

he Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College has been a major attraction for tourists and locals alike, since its doors were opened to the public in 2002. The hall was painted between 1707 and 1726 by Sir James Thornhill, during the era the building served as the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich. As well as ceiling tours, on which guests are invited up onto a mezzanine platform and offered a chance to see the ceiling’s paintings up close, the hall runs storytelling for children, hosts the annual Greenwich Music Time festival and is even used for filming, including the BBC One show Poldark, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The Painted Hall has been under construction for the last two years, but is expected to fully reopen to the public in January 2019. “We're actually launching two spaces,” Angela tells me, when we speak about the big reveal coming up in January. “The Painted Hall and the King William Undercroft visitors centre downstairs.” This will be the first time the downstairs space will have been used since the navy was in residence there. The new site will feature space for talks and

exhibitions as well as a shop and café.

Angela has been the Chief Executive of the Old Royal Naval College for just under a year and says she’s still pinching herself that the world heritage site is where she now works. “The place is so beautiful and I still don’t feel like I’ve uncovered all of its secrets. I always wanted to work at a cultural visitor destination in London, so when the opportunity came along I just couldn’t refuse.”

Angela stepped into the role not long before Christmas last year, and through festive events and fundraisers held at the venue, she started to get to know members of the local community passionate about the site. “The Greenwich community are so warm and welcoming. There’s a strong local community who are so supportive of the work we’re doing and the foundation.”

Prior to her role at the Old Royal Naval College, Angela was Chief Executive of Westway Trust in West London, a charity committed to working out ways the space under the Westway flyover could benefit local people. Angela believes her work with Westway Trust helped prepare her for her new role. “Both Greenwich and Kensington are areas of cultural heritage with a very involved and

passionate local community,” she says.

With the January relaunch approaching, the team at the Old Royal Naval College are focusing on how to make the site’s offering attractive and distinctive to the visiting public. “We're doing a lot of soul searching about our identity and how we express ourselves,” Angela explains. “To date, we've had a strong focus on conservation and looking after the building itself, but now we need to look at how to appeal to visitors. We're thinking about what our offer is for those who have a spare 20 minutes to look around, and how that differs from what we can offer those with two whole days in Greenwich.”

One way Angela and her team hope to achieve this is by curating a diverse programme of events and activities for the public.

Currently, the programme features summer holiday storytelling for children, and workshops to encourage those who have recently arrived in the UK to use the Painted Hall to express the journey they’ve been on, helping them get settled in the country.

Earlier this month, the site hosted its annual Greenwich Music Time festival, which saw 25,000 people come to enjoy live music. “Whether they came to hear Steps or Noel Gallagher, the space ignites a

sense of wonder and you can feel how special it is. These events are really important because they give people permission to come onto the site and be part of the community,” Angela explains.

If you’re yet to book a ceiling tour at the Old Royal Naval College, you might want to do so soon.

The conservation work comes to an end on September 30, after which point the observation deck will be removed, with no plans to reinstall it for the next 100 years.

In this final countdown, the Old Royal Naval College is running a photography competition on Instagram – #PaintedHall100 – encouraging visitors to share

their experiences of seeing the extraordinary work up close.

When the renovated hall and new King William Undercroft visitors centre open in January, Angela says she hopes visitors will get a sense that the space is right at the heart of Greenwich. “It's a place that satisfies the mind and the spirit. I hope visitors get to see that the story of Greenwich starts at the Old Royal Naval College.”

Acclaimed opera gets a revival and cinema screening

A

recording of Barrie Kosky’s highly acclaimed production of Handel’s Saul, which was staged at Glyndebourne opera house in 2015, will be screened at Greenwich Picturehouse on July 26.

The production, which is sung in English and supported by English subtitles, is currently enjoying a revival at the East Sussex opera house, and the cinema screening has been planned to coincide with it, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Puccini’s tragic love story Madama Butterfly was broadcast live from Glyndebourne in June, and Samuel Barber’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Vanessa is due to be live screened on 14 August. Meanwhile several live Met Opera Summer Encoure’s will also be shown at the cinema over the summer, as well as popular National Theatre and West End productions.

Since Screen Arts began in 2011, they’ve been enormously popular and praised for making some of the UK’s most prestigious theatre, dance and opera accessible to audiences beyond where the productions are being staged. What’s more, tickets are usually far cheaper to see these productions in the cinema than at the live venue and thanks to the close up camera angles, you often have a better view, too.

Advance booking is usually made available to Picturehouse members first, and screenings vary in popularity, but it’s worth booking in advance when you can to avoid disappointment.

Saul was written by Charles Jennens, a wealthy landowner and lover of the arts who was also a friend of Handel, who composed the score. Saul was first performed at the King's Theatre in the West End (which today is Her Majesty’s, where Phantom of the Opera is in residence), on 16 January 1739.

The work was a success at its London premiere and was revived by Handel in subsequent seasons.

Taken from the First Book of Samuel, the story of Saul focuses on the first king of Israel, Saul, and his eventual successor David, who has recently vanquished the giant Goliath. The story follows the descent of the relationship between Saul and David, which turns from one of admiration

to envy and violent rage, and eventually leads to the downfall of the monarch. It’s both a story of family dynamics at their most extreme and a nation’s collective fear as change brings brutal consequences with it.

Handel expert Laurence Cummings conducts the all-star cast of Saul, including German baritone Markus Brück in the title role, British tenor Allan Cllayton as Jonathan and counter-tenor Iestyn Davies as David. Meanwhile designer Katrin Lea Tag and choreographer Otto Pichler, who previously collaborated on Carmen, have joined forces again on Saul, making the opera a visually spectacular production of lavish designs and contemporary movement.

In an interview for Glyndebourne, director Barrie Kosky said: “As a director it’s an absolute joy to work on Handel’s oratorios. They have very large choruses which I love working with [and] a wide spectrum of emotions.” Barrie goes on to call out Saul for its great music and characters, as well as the emotional range of its scenes that span being tender, beautiful, funny, devastatingly sad and grotesque. “I think the audience will go through a roller coaster of emotions, which is what you should feel like when you’ve been to the opera.”

Hospices team up for five mile charity walk

T

wo hospices based in South London, St Christopher’s and Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, are teaming up with a five mile charity walk this September.

On the evening of September 29, The Twilight Walk will take participants on a five mile route, through Royal Greenwich Park and historical Greenwich, starting and ending in Blackheath.

"We are so excited to be working with St Christopher’s on this brand new event," Megan Boyle, the Deputy Fundraising Manager at Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice, said.

College and the Cutty Sark as the sunsets; but more than that, it’s a walk to make a real difference."

The two hospices are teaming up for the first time, and the funds raised will be equally split between the two.

They support about 9,000 people each year with critical end-of-life services.

The hospices need outside funding; for instance, Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice does not charge, yet it only receives about a third of the necessary funding from NHS. This Saturday, local Northern Soul band Hi Fi Sneakers is playing at the Music Mill in Plumstead.

The band have played together for six years and write a lot of their own music as well as performing classic covers, writes Holly O’Mahony...

“When we first kicked off, we mainly played covers,” says Tich Turner, the band’s vocalist. “I

have always been a songwriter and I quickly began writing new songs for the band.” The band’s new album ‘Dive Right In’ has nine original songs, as well as two popular covers.

As well as playing at the Music Mill, the band are regulars at The Pelton Arms in Greenwich, The White Swan in Charlton and The Fox ‘n’ Firkin in Lewisham, and sometimes tour further afield around the country.

“Playing live for us, is all about sending an audience home with a song in their head, a spring in their step, a smile on their face and tired legs from dancing,” says Tich.

An all-male production of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera Iolanthe

S

asha Regan’s all-male production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe is on at the Greenwich Theatre this week. Iolanthe, or The Peer and the Peri as it’s sometimes known, is widely regarded as Sir Arthur Sullivan’s most beautiful score, writes Holly O'Mahony...

It was the fourth major success for Gilbert and Sullivan, and became the first theatre production in the world to be illuminated entirely with electric lights. The spritely opera tells a very funny story involving fairies and their relationships with members of the House of Lords. Staged by Regan De Wynter Williams, the company Sasha established with long-term collaborator Ben Wynter, the opera has been given a new opening in which a group of naughty school boys discover an old copy of Iolanthe in a Narnia-like wardrobe.

Sasha and Ben’s production is currently enjoying a successful UK tour. “We have visited the most beautiful venues and the audience gets larger every night as people return and bring their friends,” Sasha beams. “Iolanthe is an absolutely beautiful piece, the score and script are just glorious. It amazes me how even children can get so engrossed in a production and be completely unaware of the age of the piece.”

Iolanthe is not the first show Sasha

has staged with an all-male cast.

“It started out as a one-off idea for Pirates of Penzance [the company’s 2015 award-winning production] but has now become so popular around the country that I would never dream of changing them.” Having a male cast take on the roles of Iolanthe’s silly fairies adds another big dollop of humour to what is already a very funny show, Sasha says. “It was hard work for the company as all the fairies use sign language, so not only were they learning the score, dialogue and choreography, but also

Ben and Sasha have staged six productions together as Regan De Wynter Williams. When they first met, Ben was an assistant stage manager on a production of Lonely Lives which was on at the Union Theatre which Sasha was running at the time. “Over the years we have directed together, I’ve choreographed for Ben and in recent years we formed our company to take Union Theatre’s work into bigger spaces,” says Sasha. pair; following Iolanthe, Ben and Sasha will almost immediately be immersing themselves in a UK tour of Salad Days, and have a month’s run of Pirates of Penzance booked at Wilton’s Music Hall in Whitechapel next February.

For Sasha, one of the best bits of touring Iolanthe has been reading the audience’s positive reaction to the play on social media. “There is an overwhelming love for this Iolanthe.” Her favourite comments, she says, come from new audience members who didn’t think that it

would be their cup of tea, or didn’t think they liked Gilbert and Sullivan’s work, but found themselves surprised to enjoy it so much. “If we have managed to create some new Gilbert and Sullivan fans in 2018 then we are doing something right – and that makes me happy.”

A Deptford brunch spot with outdoor seating and generous portions

W

ith what feels like an eternally sunny summer upon us, what better way to enjoy it than by soaking up the rays on a lazy weekend morning while enjoying an outdoor brunch? While in Greenwich and Blackheath, cafés boasting outdoor seating are flocked to by the masses and quickly become incredibly busy on sunny weekends, the offering at Deptford Market Yard is much calmer, whilst still serving up a decent atmosphere alongside a delicious breakfast, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Scouting out my options one hot Sunday morning earlier this month, I settled on the Dirty Apron, an independent café which has been open a year-and-a-half,

serving a brunch menu until 3pm.

I arrived at the café just before 10:30am and although some tables were occupied, the area was blissfully quiet and relaxed.

While there is a small number of tables inside, the outdoor seating under and around a canopy is the appeal here – as it is at the other businesses in residence dotted underneath the arches.

The Dirty Apron’s take on allday breakfast includes comfort food winners of the sausage sandwich variety (tarted up with caramelised onion relish, dijon mayonnaise and watercress); smoked salmon on sourdough toast; Bircher muesli (apple juicesoaked oats, grated pear, Greek yoghurt, fruits, nuts and seeds) for those keen to keep it light; and a bubble and squeak hash brown that came with poached eggs, watercress and relish.

After some debate I settled (perhaps unoriginally) on the Maldon deep smoked salmon, which at £9 was the most expensive item on the menu – most other dishes were around the £5-£7 mark, eye-openingly reasonable for brunch in London.

The thick slices salmon really were ‘deep smoked’, and the slivers so generous I had to put some to the side. The salmon came with two poached eggs, toasted sourdough, an interesting garnish of salad and pickled cucumber which, together with the horseradish crème fraîche, gave the dish a tasty tang.

A freshly squeezed grapefruit juice was just right to help wash it all down and replenish vitamin levels at the same time. The juice was rustic – with pulp and a smattering of pips – and pretty, with a sprig of mint setting off

the pinkness. Meanwhile a black Americano was deep in taste and just right in strength.

By 11am, although there were a couple of tables still available, new arrivals were being warned by staff of a lengthy wait for food because of the busy kitchen, which led to a few customers grumbling of more staff being needed.

Casting an eye along the row of other cafés and restaurants serving brunch, Lomond Coffee next door is the main competitor for business from the breakfast crowd. But by 11am, Hank’s, with its menu of burgers was also ready for custom, while quirky cocktail bar Little Nan’s, Mamas Jerk and the Tapas Room all opened not long after. So, if you arrive and can’t bag a table, there are other options here, too. My advice? Aim for the Dirty Apron,

but arrive before 10:30am to beat the brunch crowd and avoid disappointment.
