A different view of London

I

f you’ve found yourself looking longingly at the glistening waters of the Thames in this uncharacteristic heat, but the idea of stripping off and jumping in (to a pool, not the river!) holds no appeal, I’m pleased to say there’s an alternative, writes Holly O’Mahony...

This comes to us by way of the London Kayak Company which, partnering with Secret Adventures, offers kayaking trips between west London and Greenwich.

Having clocked advertisements for these escapades over the last few months, I was keen to have a paddle myself, so I booked a place on the night kayaking trip one humid evening earlier in July.

We were instructed to turn up in comfortable clothes, wear old trainers and bring a bottle of water and waterproofs with us

for the journey. This particular tour began in Battersea, where our group of 10 (split in twos between five kayaks) met at 6:30pm, and prepared to travel down the Thames with the tide, before pulling up onto the shore in Greenwich between 9pm-9:30pm (depending on the wind). After introductions and a brief safety demonstration, we nestled into our kayaks and were pushed out onto the river by our two tour guides.

Incidentally, you don’t have to have kayaked before to take part in the trip – and one of the great things about kayaking is how easy it is to learn the ropes (and convince yourself you’re good at it) with just a few flicks of the paddle. Unlike sailing, windsurfing, diving or other watersports, it’s incredibly quick to pick up.

So off we paddled down the Thames, with our knowledgeable instructors calling out the names

of the bridges we passed under, the houses owned by notable celebrities and points of historic interest dotted along the shore.

I had no idea how little I knew about this important strip of the river, which runs past the Southbank and parliament, and saw things I’ve previously always missed when walking along the shore, due to looking down at my phone or focusing on getting from A to B without colliding with other busy Londoners. Out on the less populated waters, the slower pace, gentle breeze and different angles threw the city into a different perspective. Yes, there were boats to dodge and bridge pillars to navigate, but our attentive guides knew how to herd us along together, while we had time to take in the city around us.

As the sky turned from golden to pale pink (we really were lucky with the weather) we made our

way along the final stretch of the route, past towering Canary Wharf and on towards Cutty Sark in Greenwich – our final landmark.

Just in the nick of time, too; I can’t speak for the others but my arms were beginning to ache. Our guides pulled us onto the shore and I was surprised by how quickly the cold set in after being freed from the cocoon-like kayak. Thankfully, we were quickly ushered up to the Sail Loft Pub, which overlooks the river, where a complimentary Talisker whisky awaited us and warmed the cockles.

If you’re comfortable stepping off shore and looking for a different kind of London adventure, London Kayak Company's trips are certainly worth a look-in.

Splashing past the Globe, St Paul's, London Eye, Tower Bridge and Cutty Sark, these trips are a chance to get sporty and do a bit of sightseeing at the same time.

The company offer the same trip all year round, and so those who favour the thrill of darkened waters lit only by the city’s twinkling lights to the sunset experience we had, might want to book later in the year.

Incidentally, the same trip runs in the other direction earlier in the day, beginning in Greenwich and ending in west London.

But from my experience, the ease of being able to get home quickly and snuggle up in something dry following the trip is preferable.

Greenwich's Dominic Cooper stars in Mamma Mia! Here we go again G

reenwich-born Dominic Cooper is among the original cast members singing their way back onto cinema screens this summer for Mamma Mia! Here we go again, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Cooper, along with Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Christine Baranski starred in the 2008 film Mamma Mia! directed by Phyllida Lloyd.

Featuring the much-loved songs of Swedish pop group ABBA, including ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘I Have a Dream’, and the UK’s favourite: ‘The Winner Takes it All’, the story followed 20-yearold bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) who invites three men, each of whom could be her father, to her wedding to Sky (Dominic Cooper), without telling her mother Donna (Meryl Streep).

Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the original film’s release, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is transporting audiences back to the all-singing, all-dancing Greek island of Kalokairi, for another delve into Sophie and Donna’s dramas, this time directed by Ol Parker. So, what’s new? English actress Lily James plays the younger version of Meryl Streep's character Donna in the movie, while singer Cher also joins the cast, in the role of Donna’s mother Ruby.

The story flashes between Sophie’s current pregnancy and Donna’s pregnancy with her many years before, revisiting the question mark around which of Donna’s three suitors is Sophie’s birth father. ABBA member Benny Andersson has confirmed the band’s songs 'Angel Eyes', 'I Wonder' and 'When I Kissed the Teacher' all feature in the movie.

Dominic told Digital Spy the sequel has been a long time coming. "[The producers] waited for a script to come along that makes sense and is fun and is gonna be as exciting for fans of the original, and that's really important," he said. The 40-year-old actor from Greenwich is the son of a nursery school teacher and an auctioneer, and attended John Ball Primary School and Thomas Tallis School in Kidbrooke. Dominic told the Evening Standard it was by chance he found acting. “I was terrible academically,” he said. “I loved acting in school plays and knew in the back of my mind that that was what I wanted to do – I just didn't

After starring in the original Mamma Mia! film in 2008, Dominic went on to star in 2009 films An Education and Freefall, before playing Hippolytus in Phedre at the National Theatre alongside Helen Mirren. More recently, in late 2016, Dominic played John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester in a well-received West End revival of Stephen Jeffreys’ 1994 play The Libertine at the

Haymarket Theatre.

Dominic dated his Mamma Mia! co-star Amanda from 2008-2010, and his Phedre costar Ruth Negga between 20102018, but the couple split in April this year. Dominic told the Metro last year that he expected it to be “odd” reuniting with ex-girlfriend Amanda for the sequel. He said: “I think it will be fine working with Amanda again...Though it’ll be odd, gazing into each other’s eyes

and singing an ABBA song.”

I

nnovative, imaginative and sparky theatre company Pants on Fire is bringing their magical show Ovid’s Metamorphoses to Greenwich Theatre this weekend, writes Holly O’Mahony...

I first saw the show in 2015, during its run at the Earl Haig Hall in Crouch End, and it’s since held a firm place in my mind as one of the most exciting pieces of theatre out there.

Combining a quirky set with a plotline that straddles the border between fantastical mythology and everyday moments of surrealism, humorous songs and sequences that appear like optical illusions to the audience, Ovid’s Metamorphoses is an exciting and unique piece of theatre.

Pants on Fire was established by its current artistic director Peter Bramley in 2004, after he studied at at the Jacques Lecoq school in Paris. The company also site theatre company Complicite – which was also born out of the Lecoq training – as an inspiration, as well as the work of theatre director Julie Taymor of The Lion King. Although Peter’s training was about theatre-making, the Lecoq school taught him the importance of always putting the audience first.

“When we make theatre, it is [Peter's] instinct to always focus on what the audience see and experience,” explains Heather Winstanley, the company director. Peter has mastered this technique – delighting his audience, who I’ve witnessed gasp and clap in wonder at the visual trickery in Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

Heather explains a lot of the tricks come about through trial and error. “It is great when you are in a rehearsal room and something happens by accident, and everyone says 'we need to keep that'. The process is

But beyond the magical realism, there's a serious note to Pants on Fire's Ovid, too. “Through the telling of different myths, the show explores how human beings and nature are all connected,” explains Heather.

“Man’s disregard for his connection

to nature is causing the earth to suffer and if he continues destroying nature he will ultimately destroy himself. This is the main theme and underpins the light hearted, joyful show,” she says, quoting Ovid the Roman poet himself: “We are all made of the same living stuff.”

According to Heather, Peter has always loved Greek and Roman

Mythology. The first production he ever directed was The Love of the Nightingale by Timberlake Wertenbaker, based on a myth taken from Ovid. “At the time Shakespeare was writing, Ovid was the best-selling book, second only to the Bible, and almost all of Shakespeare's plays either refer to myths, or borrow plot lines taken

from Ovid,” she explains.

The company first staged Ovid’s Metamorphoses in 2010, and the preview performance also happened to be in Greenwich. “I watched that performance and said to myself: ‘this is a company I want to work with’,” recalls Heather, who joined the company seven years ago. The show then went on to win the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award, which saw the company perform in New York for a month before doing a UK regional tour. Peter has been the company constant over that time, while the number of people Pants on Fire has collaborated with is into triple figures. Between runs of Ovid, the company has created and staged several other shows, including The Fumidor which was written by Peter and staged at the Warehouse Theatre in Croydon, and Pinocchio, which the company reimagined as a 1950’s B movie.

“Every time we re-visit Ovid it seems to change in some way,” says Heather. “We’re incredibly excited to bring the show back to Greenwich, where it all started, bigger and better than ever!”

Heather (and I) can recall what a magical and beautiful experience watching Ovid’s Metamorphoses for the first time was. “I still remember the feeling I got watching the show over eight years ago and if we can ignite that in someone else then it will make all of the hard work worth it,” she says.

Jazz at the Royal Naval College The South London Jazz Orchestra (SLJO) are performing at the Old Royal Naval College’s Old Brewery venue in Greenwich on Saturday 21 July.

The spirited group of over 100 musicians say they aim to promote Big Band jazz to their audiences, and have fun while doing so. The event is free to attend and will be a chance to hear the community orchestra perform their latest jazz and swing sets.

“We usually play over thirty gigs each year, and have performed at a wide range of events this year, including the London Marathon, Wandsworth Arts Fringe Festival, and Brighton Fringe Festival,” says Helen Stone, chair of SLJO. The group also play regularly together at private events, weddings, award ceremonies and community events, but

particularly love coming together to perform at local pubs.

For those who can’t make it to the Old Brewery on Saturday, or those who want to hear SLJO again following the gig, you can, because the band are playing at three royal parks across the city this summer. On Sunday 22 July, they’ll be playing at the Regent’s Park bandstand, then on the afternoon of Sunday 5 August they’ll perform at the Hyde Park bandstand, and finally on Sunday 12 August, SLJO will be back in Greenwich, performing at the Greenwich Park bandstand from 3pm-5pm.

A garden for all the senses NOW gallery in North Greenwich is housing a plant-shrouded installation this summer, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Indirect Sunlight is a combination of sculpture and planting, and is the brainchild of Glasgow-based artists Laura Aldridge and James Rigler, who wanted to create a metaphorical and physical garden that appeals to the senses. Describing the project, cultural consultant at NOW Gallery Jemima Burrill said: “The sense of refuge and recovery that embody memorial gardens, romantic landscapes and even the humble allotment will be plentiful in the sculptural language of Indirect Sunlight.” As will the sound of water, the smell of the earth and the rustle of fabric in the breeze, she says.

James and Laura have been working together for the last six months, exploring how their mutual interest in ceramics and love of colour could come together for the exhibition. Using a range of ceramic techniques, they’ve created a series of vivid, colourful planters and plant trays – infusing their planting elements with colourful designs. “They’ve worked in a collaborative way,

using each other’s artistic strengths to have a dialogue about the way colours work, weaving their interests together in a compelling way,” commends Jemima.

This is not your typical exhibition, though. The artists are keen for visitors to use the space as a brief rural retreat, or as Jemima says: “a place

for contemplation away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.” It’s interactive, too; visitors are invited to make their own newspaper pot and plant a seed to take home. Plus, if you photo-document your seed’s growth using the hashtag ‘#indirectsunlight’, you could be in with a chance of winning cocktails at Craft London. Seeds

available to grow include salad leaves, nasturtiums, runner beans and cucumber.

“The exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to plant a seed and become part of a growing process within an artistic environment,” says Jemima.

“It’s an opportunity to have time to wander around the colourful arches and experience these

artists' vision of a gentle space, which will gradually be taken over by plants.”

Going underground

T

his is going to be about a world which is all round us but which we do not notice.

In Greenwich and Woolwich are the remains of many quarries and underground workings. How many of us knew they were there? They range from the humble dene hole – and they can wait to be explained in the future – to actual underground mine workings. It’s all about chalk and sand and the building industry.

The A2 Dover Road runs up Blackheath Hill from the valley of the river Ravensbourne and then follows a ridge across Blackheath and Charlton to continue up Shooters Hill.

Most of the old pits lie south of that road on the slopes which run down to marshland and the River.

In 2002 Blackheath Hill collapsed suddenly and dramatically leaving what was initially a six metre diameter hole. The road was built by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago, and while travellers used it go from London into Kent and the coast, so other people burrowed underneath it for chalk – no wonder it collapsed!

On the Lewisham side of the road, the south side, look behind the flats and houses and industrial buildings where there are the chalk faces of pits from which chalk was quarried over centuries. This area was known as ’the lime kilns’ and Greenwich South Street was once Lime Kiln Lane. At the top of Blackheath Hill lying under Point Hill is the once notorious and much publicised Blackheath Cavern. It was used as a night club in the early 19th century where there were all sorts of goings on – and it is, of course, an old chalk mine. There is also a small sand mine in a nearby Greenwich back garden.

Blackheath itself is a mass of hollows and bumps. In 1695 Henry Cleisby was in trouble for digging ‘great quantities of sand and gravel’ there. Inside Greenwich Park itself are all sorts of hollows and bumps, the Observatory Garden was once a gravel pit. Above Maze Hill Station the area now known as Woodlands was once Ballast Field where gravel was dug and possibly taken down to Ballast Quay to provide return cargos for ships which had brought coal down from the North East to London.

Another large chalk pit is now known as the Angerstein Triangle. It is where the railway line emerges from the Blackheath tunnel on its way to Charlton Station. This was the site of the Southern Railway signal works and is now the police car pound.

Charlton Football Ground is called ‘the Valley’ and is another old pit called the Great Pit or the Ballast Pit. In the 1800s it was quarried by

At the top of Blackheath Hill lying under Point Hill is the once notorious and much publicised Blackheath Cavern. It was used as a night club in the early 19th century - where there were all sorts of goings on – and it is, of course, an old chalk mine.

Lewis Glenton. He was a limeburner and also a developer who built houses and churches in Blackheath and Kidbrooke as well in the City of London and Brighton. His Charlton pit was later filled with debris from the London Sewer Works. As well as the football ground with its massive stadium, this old pit now contains two housing estates, a tower block, some shops and a Thames Water pumping station,.

Glenton also built a railway from his pit to the riverside – the route is today's Ransom Road and it passes under a little low bridge because the trucks which ran on it would have needed very little headroom.

Some railway track remained by the riverside until very recently and there is probably some still inside the old Bridon rope works in Anchor and Hope Lane, On the Woolwich side of Charlton Lane were ‘the sand pits’. This is the famous bit. Charlton Sandpit is now part of an extended Maryon Park.

Much of the pit itself is fenced off and known as ‘Gilbert’s Pit; a protected area of geodiversity interest, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The land which is now Maryon Park was presented to the London County Council by Sir Spencer, Maryon Wilson and was the site of a worked out chalk and gravel pit. It is easy to see this if you look around standing in the central lawn in the southern part of the park, where high cliff faces stand all around you.

East of Maryon Park is the 1960s Morris Walk Estate which is also built on the site of sandpits and developed for housing from the 1840s. These pits belonged to John Long, who used Trinity Wharf in Warspite Road to export sand.

North of the railway on the Charlton and Woolwich borders were more pits. The railway runs through a series of tunnels and Woolwich Dockyard Station itself is sited in an old sand pit. In 1849 railway builders came across ‘a cave’ here and visitors were shown round at 3d. a time. Further on Spray Street and the area around Woolwich Arsenal station was part of a sand pit owned by the Pattison family.

All of these pits are easy to see if

you know what you are looking for.

All of them have a flat bottom where the current buildings are and the cliff faces rise up all around. In the summer they are covered with thick vegetation and hidden behind trees growing ever taller up to the light.

We need to look in winter when bare chalk faces will appear.

And then there are the actual mines. In 1899 the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society built the Bostall Estate and a mine was dug to provide chalk for the building operations. When the estate was finished the shaft to the chalk mine was capped with a steel grill. The works canteen was re-named the Co-operative Hall – and remains as the amenities building for the Abbey Wood camp site. The underground galleries remained accessible up until the 1960s when it was still possible to crawl into the rubbish filled entrance.

To the north of this at Kings Highway and Wickham Lane is a much larger series of underground workings connected to the brick making industry. These extensive chalk mines to the west of Wickham

Lane, Plumstead, were dug in the 19th and early 20th centuries to support brick and tile making works by a series of companies involved with the building trade. This is a very large area of interconnected underground workings and may include areas considerably older than the documented brickworks.

Chalk from the mines was mixed with brick earth to make London stock bricks and there were internal rail systems where trolleys brought the chalk to the surface.

More underground workings are thought to exist in Wickham Lane and across the Bexley border. Near Plumstead cemetery and on the edge of Bostall Woods is Turpin’s cave, another small chalk mine built into the site of a larger pit. From the 1800s to the present day there has been an explosion of building in south-east London and beyond - the bricks had to be made somewhere!

This has been a very quick look at a few of the sires left from what was a massive industry in the extraction of chalk and sand for buildings, ballast, glass and pottery. More information can be found on the Subterranean Greenwich web site (https://subterraneangreenwich. wordpress.com), and in extensive research undertaken by Subterranea Britannica and the Kent Underground Research Group.

The bar bringing Italian quality to Greenwich N

ew wine bar Vini Italiani is bringing a touch of refined, Italian quality to the Greenwich food and drink scene, writes Holly O’Mahony.

The brand already has existing branches in South Kensington and Covent Garden, but has set up shop south of the river in Greenwich, where the offering includes Italian wines, cold cuts, cheeses and hot traditional dishes.

On our visit on a balmy July day, the heavily air-conditioned, petit bar was a blessing to step into. Inside, small tables promote intimate dining for two, while the wines lining the walls give plenty to look at while waiting to be served (or something to talk about if conversation dries up on a date, perhaps). When my companion arrived we decided to brave the heat and take a seat at one of the Greenwich market tables the restaurant serves at outside. Incidentally, customers seated out here are currently entitled to 50% off the bill because of the surrounding scaffolding and clatter that comes with it.

Our knowledgeable sommelier was quick to guide us through our indecisiveness; she suggested we try the trio of tasting wines and, after asking us to describe our taste preferences, decided to swap out certain wines for others on the menu to better suit our palates.

I sampled a trio of whites, and first up was the Fiano Colli di Salerno, a 2014 wine from the Campania region which was deliciously dry and fruity. Next I tried the Costa da Posa, a 2016 wine from Liguria, which had a deeper, wintery taste that, if you sampled with your eyes shut, you could be forgiven for thinking was a red. Finally I moved on to the Gewurztraminer Alto Adige, a 2017 wine from Trentino Alto Adige which was clean, dry and alcoholic enough to see any drinker well on their way to feeling tipsy, which made me all the more thankful for the accompanying platters.

After dabbling with the idea of sharing the light bites – three for £15 – or hot choices, which included the likes of gnocchi and lasagne, and also carried a £15 for three price tag, our sommelier again pointed us in a different direction: that of the Salumi and Formaggi platters. These cold cuts and cheeses are simple and all about tasting the quality of the produce. On the Salumi platter is generous cuts of Mortadella, Prosciutto di Parla, Coppa Gran

thin, bread crisps that were more of a gesture than an event in themselves, allowing our focus to remain purely on the meats and cheeses.

Vini Italiani also opens for breakfast where, according to the menu, continental or rather typical hot breakfasts (eggs

benedict, eggs royale etc) are served with Illy coffees and ‘breakfast wines’, including lowalcohol Moscato and prosecco.

If you like the wines you sample here, the good news is most of them are available to purchase both in-house and online to take home. Meanwhile

a selection of different picnic hampers featuring Italian panini, focaccias, nibbles, and a bottle of wine of your choice can also be bought – a far cry from the standard soggy sandwiches, scotch eggs and Bucks Fizz picnic affair.

Finally, if you’re liking the sound of Vini Italiani and wondering when you should visit, the bar’s weekly events may help you make up your mind: on Enomatic Mondays, guests who top up their sample card with £20 get a complimentary £10 added on top of that. While on Wine Wednesdays you can learn all about Italian wine from 7pm-8pm for £10 per person.
