Happy birthday Thamesmead!

t’s 50 years since the first residents moved to Thamesmead: one of the first ‘new towns’ in London, and a visionary masterplan of the Greater London Council (GLC).

To celebrate, Peabody, the Housing Association carrying out regeneration plans in the area, have planned a year of activities and events for residents and visitors.

“Thamesmead is such an extraordinary place and has so much history, so we thought why not celebrate it with a whole year of events?” Adriana said.

Thamesmead got its name through a £20 cash prize competition in a local paper; Anthony Walton from Barnehurst beat 564 competitors to crown the area with its title. The Gooch family moved in on July 1st, 1968.

“It had been marshland area, and before that the Royal Arsenal, and the vision came into being in 1967 when they started to recruit the first residents. It was a very prestigious place to live and residents were carefully vetted,” Adriana said.

THE 50TH FUND

To celebrate 50 years of Thamesmead, a 50th fund was launched in January with money collected from local filming fees going straight back into the community.

“Thamesmead continues to be really popular for filming,” Adriana said.

Skepta and A$AP Rocky filmed their latest music video in Thamesmead, while BBC shot Informer, a new drama due to air in autumn.

“They took on about 70 locals as extras, and paid them,” Adriana said. “There’s lots of fashion shoots there. Sam Smith did a video last autumn around the

“The 50th fund is very much about empowering local residents to put on their own events, develop projects and things they want to see happen, and it’s about supporting individuals not just groups,” Adriana said.

FESTIVALS

The 50th festival, on July 14, follows a long tradition of festivals in the area. “There were some quite phenomenal festivals in the ‘70s, including one called Human Power festival with people making

their own machines and trying to go as fast as they could on land,” Adriana said. “At this event we’re having a dog show; dogs are a huge part of the Thamesmead community: Chihuahuas, huskies, and Staffordshire bull terriers are the three breeds I see most regularly.”

The festival will also have a talent stage, community carnival, tea parlour, and reminiscence tents.

Another highlight is Beautiful Thing, a performance developed with the Greenwich + Docklands

festival, running on July 3-7.

“This is the unsung film heritage of Thamesmead,” Adriana said.

“A Beautiful Thing was a West End play turned into a film. It was written in Thamesmead; the play is 25 years old this year, it was made into Channel 4 film in the late ‘90s, set here, filmed here, and it’s the most technicolour glorious love story,” she continued. “We’re holding an outdoor dance theatre performance of it in and around the architecture with a community cast.”

Fly by Night is part of international World War I celebrations, with organisers bringing in 1500 pigeons from the Netherlands to fly in formation over the river at dusk with LED lights attached to their legs where messages would have been.

Peabody partnered with 1418 who are creating all the art celebrations for the First World War, including the poppies at Tower of London. This project was first carried out in New York, two years ago.

GLC’s masterplan was a balance between urban architecture and green spaces with double the open space per head than anywhere else in London. The area has a seal that’s something of a local celebrity, while the wildlife, birds, and swans are a huge draw for local photographers. “The mud banks of the Thames attract certain breeds of birds. It’s quite a mature landscape,” John continued.

“We’re working hard to bring more life to the parks. They’re lovely, but some of them aren’t in the right place. We’re working on a landscape strategy at the moment for the whole town, so there’s easy connections and comfortable, safe paths.”

THE FUTURE: SOUTHMERE VILLAGE

The newly renovated Lakeside Centre is a cultural community hub opening in October, with a 30 year partnership with East London’s Bow Arts. “It’ll be lots of uses under one roof: a YMCA nursery for 60 local small people, Greenwich Cooperative Agency running an enterprise kitchen and café, and creative workspaces,” Adriana said.

The boating club, currently on Binsey Walk, is also moving to the Lakeside centre, where it will be run by the YMCA, offering canoeing, sailing and other watersports.

The Link youth centre has also expanded with three new studios and performance spaces for theatre.

As part of the new town square, a library is opening in the new Southmere Village.

“Where the four towers are, just to the corner is a new site for 525 new homes,” John said. “There’ll be a new town square, a water feature, some cafes, bars, shops to service local residents. And it’ll expand to 1500 new homes. We’re building the centre first to make sure facilities are there for the outset.”

A new radio station is opening, as well as a pop-up cinema.

“Thamesmead needs a cinema,” Adriana said. “We’re not going to build a cinema overnight, in the meantime we’re holding a monthly cinema with popular titles, run by local volunteers. We’ve trained up some local projectionists, and we’re trying to make it affordable.”

A play to put nervous flyers on the edge of their seats

N

ervous flyers should steer clear* of the Churchill Theatre in Bromley this coming weekend, because GASP!

Theatre Company are performing their newly written and devised comedy Not All Plane Sailing. Fastpaced, satirical and entertaining, the play follows the story of Norma, Aoife, Gigi and Joyce – four eccentric air hostesses aboard the new Concorde 9745. Audiences are invited to join them on the plane’s first flight, but watch out – a brash pilot, near-crash and fatal nut allergy lie ahead.

GASP! was founded by Georgina Stafford, Alex Saunders-Yates, Sophie Kronenberg and Philippa Holmes, when the four were studying together at the University of Kent. The company currently has a residency there, with the School of Arts. “We worked together on a

project in our first year,” Alex says.

“We found working together easy and bounced off one another’s energy and ideas.” Following some positive feedback from peers and tutors, the girls decided to form the company together, with an aim of creating farcical, daring and intelligently silly performances – peppered with cross gender casting and multi-role playing. It’s not only about the larks, though, GASP! also has a second aim to conjure thought-provoking messages and express empowerment through mockery.

“As an all-female company we would be missing a trick if we didn’t root our work within modern day feminist ideals,” explains Alex, who says the inspiration for Not All Plane Sailing came from exploring real-life situations in which women are more often the dominant figures. “After watching things like Come Fly with

Me, the play Boeing Boeing and Airplane, we decided that farcical comedy set on an aeroplane would be something fun and interesting to play around with. We were also able to highlight the prejudice that can often be surrounding female air hostesses.”

So, are any of the girls nervous flyers themselves? “Pip hates taking off and landing, especially when the plane tilts, and Sophie just gets very excited,” laughs Alex. “She once got told off for getting too excited, and making another passenger nervous!”

Not All Plane Sailing is the company’s second show together.

Their first comedy, She Wears the Trousers, toured around Kent and Surrey before having a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016. So how did the devising process for the second show compare to that of the first? “The

devising process for Not All Plane Sailing ran more smoothly because we had a better understanding of each other’s work methods,” Alex explains, commenting that a lot of the ideas for the show were sparked whilst they were touring She Wears the Trousers. “The creative process has had its challenges but it has been incredibly fun! We all have very strong voices and ideas, and all contribute to the writing aspect of the piece. Some rehearsals are much more practical whereas others can be more of a sit down writing session.”

This is not the first outing for Not All Plane Sailing, either. In 2017 the company performed the show at a theatre on the Canterbury University campus. “It was a great way for us to test the material,” says Alex. They then took it to NAPS in Redhill and the Courtyard Theatre in Hoxton.

Following the performances at the

Churchill Theatre, they’ll take it to the Rose Theatre in Kingston – as part of the International Youth Arts Festival – then back to Redhill for a double bill of both shows before heading to the Faversham Fringe at the end of August.

“We would love for the audience to take away with them some of the deeper socio-political messages within our shows,” Alex says.

“But ultimately our priority for our audience is to have them laughing out loud!” *Nervous flyers should come along anyway, have a laugh and face their fears.

reenwich has always been home to festivals. Back in the 1800s, a rowdy event known as Greenwich Fair was frequented by the likes of Charles Dickens, and is said to be where the author let his hair down.

But even after this particular event was eventually banned, Greenwich never lost its taste for festivities. Since the mid-1990s, the

annual Greenwich and Docklands International Festival (GDIF) has staged exciting, large-scale outdoor performances in the borough.

The festival returns on June 22, with a two-week programme packed with diverse, topical and thrill-filled shows.

The first weekend alone includes Windrush:492: a celebration of 70 years - to the day- that the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Dock from the Caribbean. The installation piece will see the names of 492 individuals who arrived on the ship displayed on the ground around Cutty Sark.

Meanwhile A Journey of Our Own and Never Set Eyes on the Land will each focus on other aspects of migration and separation from a former homeland, and explore belonging to an immigrant community in the UK. Rise! will see a giant female puppet lead a processional performance in celebration of local and global stories of women, and their continuing struggle for equality and human rights. While Fly by Night will be a visual spectacle to delight all as over 1500 trained pigeons soar into the skies above the River Thames, with LED lights attached to them, in tribute to the First World War centenary.

GDIF was founded in 1996

by Bradley Hemmings, who’s continued to be the festival’s artistic director for the past 22 years. Over that time he’s seen it expand considerably. “It’s been a fascinating journey,” Bradley says. “The point of the festival is that it should always inhabit and reflect the place and the people who live there.”

Today the festival draws audiences of 100,000 people coming from all over the UK and beyond. So what does it

offer audiences that other arts festivals perhaps don’t? “It’s all about the fact we’re an outdoor festival and everything is free – which is very much at the heart of our values,” explains Bradley. “We want visitors to feel the festival represents the city we live in. We try to encourage diverse audiences from across the borough and beyond to become invested and feel as though they’re a part of it.”

Also crucial, Bradley says, is the quality of the work being staged.

“We try to commission the very best of UK and international arts. We focus a lot on unusual staging. We’re really trying to get under the skin of the place, reveal it at its best and tell its story in a surprising way.”

GDIF is known for its inclusion of diverse acts and performers.

This year’s programme features productions championing women’s rights, multiculturalism and the LGBTQ community to name but a few. “Our values have developed to express something very democratic and inclusive,” Bradley explains. “It’s a festival for everyone where everyone feels welcome and able to have an investment in what they might see there. As a festival like ours that receives subsidies from the Arts Council and local authorities, that’s profoundly important to us.”

Bradley says the inspiration for GDIF came from many sources including shows he saw in the ‘80s produced by former Cumbria-based theatre collective Welfare State International. Bradley was inspired by the fact their visually spectacular work also carried a strong political purpose. Further inspiration came from the works of Lumiere, who produce largescale outdoor spectacles, as well as other European outdoor arts festivals similar to GDIF. Of course, a challenge producing an outdoor arts festival in the UK is the unpredictable weather. “The biggest challenge for outdoor work is often not the rain, it’s the wind,” laughs the artistic director. “If the wind is very strong it poses a safety risk. If it starts to shower, we hold off the start of the performance, or we adapt the show to make sure it’s safe and not slippery for performers. People are very tolerant of it. You have to rely a lot on the spirit of the audience to keep you going as well.”

The weather’s not the

only challenge involved with producing a festival of this size, though. There’s a lengthy licensing and planning process, and detailed coordinating with the emergency services too, to name a few things. “There’s also a lot of work that goes into engaging local schools,” Bradley explains. “It’s a complex array of logistics and we’re very lucky to have a hard-working, dedicated and resourceful team working on GDIF.” GDIF is not actually the biggest event Bradley has worked on. In 2012, he co-directed the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games held in London.

“Ceremonies can be done on all sorts of different scales,” he says, pointing out that with an event like the Paralympic Games ceremony, you also have huge amounts of support and who teams of people there to help make it happen.

“We’re a very small team for GDIF and I’d say we’re punching above our weight to do something amazingly difficult, given the level of resources we have. We’re always encouraging people to put something in one of our donations buckets if they love what they see, to help us do it again next year.”

Finally, I ask Bradley what he’s most excited about in this year’s festival programme, adding hesitantly that I hope this isn’t like asking him to pick his favourite child. “One piece I’m personally involved with as a director is a production of Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing, which will be staged in Thamesmead.

It’s an enormously exciting production because it’s going to happen on and around the buildings Jonathan described in his play. He’s been incredibly generous allowing us to turn it into a piece of dance theatre.” For those unfamiliar, the piece tells the story of two adolescent boys living in Thamesmead in the early 90s who fall in love against all odds. “It’s a great privilege to be able to make a piece of theatre like that in the place that inspired it.”

“Everything here is fresh,” I’m told emphatically when I arrive at Zerodegrees, and several times more over the course of my evening there.

The microbrewery and restaurant in Blackheath has made on-site production its USP, serving beers brewed just to the side of the main restaurant and pizzas cooked in the visiblepractically-wherever-you-sit woodfire stove. This is the first of the restaurant’s four branches and the only London-based one. Having opened in 2000 with the same offering, Zerodegrees was a step ahead of the craft beer coupled with pizza zeitgeist, which is so popular in London today.

Despite knowing that pizza was the main event here, we opted to try some starters all the same.

Those of the battered prawn and calamari variety were, sadly, nothing special. The bruschetta was similarly disappointing; slightly soggy with cherry tomatoes doused in a could-be-

from-the-jar pesto which was also lathered on the bread. My advice?

Skip them. Bread is clearly what they do well here, though. We also ordered a portion of the homemade hummus and bread (arguably a rogue move before eating a pizza), and the bread was warm, doughy and melt-in-themouth delicious.

Some pizza restaurants focus on honing the classics while others aim to impress through offering a lengthy menu. Zerodegrees does the latter, serving some surprising toppings including kedgeree, Peking duck and usually-reserved-for-pasta carbonara. “When people come to Zerodegrees, they like to try something different,” on-site manager Adel tells me, adding that Peking duck and rump steak are in fact two of the restaurant’s most popular pizza toppings.

Keen to embrace the experimental menu while not wanting to veer too far from a typical pizza point of reference, I opted for a half-andhalf, with portobello mushroom

and prosciutto on one side. The spin here was that it came with a scraping of mild coriander pesto on the base instead of tomato.

This was enough to keep the stalwart ‘ham and mushroom’ classic interesting, but would I order it over a tomato base in the future? Probably not. On the other side of the pizza was a Greek combo of spinach, feta, sun-dried tomatoes and olives. The tomato sauce tasted incredibly fresh, and the pizza came with a drizzle of lemon juice which was an unusual but interesting addition. Mussels, incidentally, are the other food the restaurant is popular for, but the busy menu also boasts pasta dishes, salads and risotto.

As for the beers, I was eager to try all five of the core range which are brewed on site, so I opted for the tasting menu. First I sampled the Czech pilsner which was cloudier than expected (a sign, I’m told, the beer hasn’t been tampered with through filtering), with notes of a honeylike sweetness fighting through

the bitterness. The American pale ale was deliciously fruity and hoppy, but then I’m biased as pale ales are generally my favourite.

The Belgian witbier (wheat beer) was sharp, sour and a little heavy, and yet the purity and freshness of it was evident too. I’m not usually one for dark beers but the dark lagar – on the menu as ‘The Beast’ – was smoky, chocolatey, not too bitter and significantly more delicious than I would have expected. But the mango beer stole the show; far too often the hints of fruity notes in beers are either too subtle to catch or over-emphasised, but the whiff of mango was present from the smell through to the aftertaste and was sweet and light, making it an ideal summer beer. Perhaps the best thing, though, is that this being a brewery, if you find a beer you like, you can buy a 5L keg of it to take home.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Shooters Hill Road] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by SGN Who need to carry out gas main replacement works.

2. The Order will come into operation on 25th June 2018 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take three months. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, the following roads at the junction of Shooters Hill Road: Charlton Park Lane, Kenya Road, Grenada Road, Indus Road and Old Dover Road. As well as to make Marlborough Road one way going Northbound from the junction of Shooters Hill Road to Charlton Dene and to Make Hervey Road one way going southbound from the junction of Shooters Hill Road.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted as per signed route. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.
