Close encounters of the artistic kind The only chance - this century- to see the Painted Ceiling up close T

he Old Royal Naval College is giving art lovers a rare opportunity to see the painted ceiling up close.

As part of restorations to the Painted Hall, a 60-foot high observation deck has been constructed, which members of the public can go on as part of the guided tours.

Conservators are working to restore over 40,000 square feet of painted surface, making it the

most thorough restoration effort in the Painted Hall’s history. In addition to the conservation work, environmental controls will be installed, ensuring that the paintings will not need further restoration for another 100 years.

The opportunity to see the ceiling up close will not present itself again for another century after the scaffolding and observation deck are removed in September.

THE UK’S SISTiNE CHAPEL Old Royal Naval College’s painted hall is one of the most famous examples of Baroque artwork, and is sometimes referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the UK. Sir James Thornhill originally painted the ceiling between 1707 and 1726, which catapulted him to fame. The paintings feature techniques such as high contrast of light and dark chiaroscuro, fictional light sources, and the depth-perception technique of foreshortening.

Thornhill’s use of illusionistic architecture and steep perspectives reflect Roman High Baroque painting.

The central focus of the Painted Hall features accessions to the throne: William III and Mary II in 1689 and George I in 1714. Another main theme is the maritime and trading success of Britain.

The Old Royal College was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, who was also the architect of St Paul’s Cathedral. Thornhill was also commissioned to paint the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1715.

The Painted Hall itself is home

to historical landmarks as well: The hall saw the laying-in-state of Admiral Lord Nelson following his death at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Crowds queued to view Nelson’s body over three days, and the exact spot where his coffin lay is marked by a plaque on the floor.

Waking up to an injustice A

pphia Campbell’s award-winning show Woke brings two female civil rights campaigners head to head on the Greenwich Theatre stage.

One is a notorious Black Panther from the 1970s, the other a fictional student politicised by the Ferguson riots in 2014. “I really want people to come away from the show with the feeling of becoming more active,” said Apphia. “Some parts of the media called the Black Panthers a terrorist group but I want people to understand what was going on and where all the anger and angst in Ferguson came from.”

In 2015 the Department Of Justice in America announced that police had discriminated against African Americans in “a pattern of practice of unlawful conduct”.

Apphia plays both roles in the one-woman show, which sold out at the Edinburgh Festival last year and won the coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award as well as being highly commended by judges of the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award.

She co-wrote Woke with her friend, Meredith Yarbrow, with the idea of merging the story of Black Panther Assata Shakur with a student enrolling as a music student in St Louis 42 years later.

The riots had just started in nearby Ferguson, following the shooting by police of black student Michael Brown.

“We wanted to chronicle the student’s journey to becoming an activist,” said Apphia.

Shakur was arrested in 1972 and falsely accused of killing a white police officer. She was unjustly convicted of murder by an allwhite jury but escaped from prison and fled to Cuba, where she lives today.

“I thought of merging her story with modern day events in Ferguson, how things got that bad and to find out where all the anger and angst came from.”

Apphia, who had a previous sellout festival hit with Black is the Color of My Voice, wrote the music for the show that also includes traditional gospel and blues sung live. “I wrote lots of songs while living in Shanghai so it followed that Ambrosia, the student, would be studying music,” she said.

“There’s a danger of becoming desensitised by what’s going on at the moment, having Brexit and Trump in the same year. I don’t want to read about it because it makes me angry, but then I know I have to read it. I want to be aware of the issues and still have my voice heard.

“At the same time I think it’s

inspiring a new generation of activists, and I honestly feel that over the next 20 or 30 years there’s going to be a whole different scene in the States.”

Woke is a colloquialism in America that means being aware, and experiencing an awakening.

“I want the audience to leave Greenwich Theatre feeling woke,” said Apphia. “We need more activists.”

Plumstead Manor is a Good School Ofsted - May 2018 Following an inspection from Ofsted in May 2018, Plumstead Manor has been judged to be a Good School in all aspects. The inspection took place just over two years after the school was last visited by Ofsted, and is a clear indication of the significant and sustained improvements that have been brought about to the quality of education the school provides.

Inspectors found that the school now provides pupils with a good education - students leave well equipped for the next stages of their education or career, and for their future lives as responsible citizens. They also commented that as students progress through the school, they gain in self-confidence and self-awareness. They become thoughtful and reflective and develop a sense of responsibility and engagement with the school and wider community.

Significantly improved teaching has secured improved progress, and students through the school make good progress overall.

The school has moved to a mixed intake from September 2018, and remains oversubscribed for entry into that cohort, despite taking an additional class in response to demand for school places. Located adjacent to Plumstead Common the school benefitted from a rebuild and refurbishment under the Building Schools for the Future programme, and offers the opportunity of a rich curriculum, in a happy and friendly environment where all young people can flourish.

Singer/songwriter Clive John takes on the role of the iconic Man in Black.

The man who laid cables under the Atlantic

F

our or five years ago a group of us decided to get together to campaign on the derelict state of Enderby House which stands on the Greenwich Riverside.

In addition to the house itself we wanted to draw attention to the amazing heritage of Enderby Wharf in that for over 150 years submarine telegraph, then later telephone cables had been made there along with many technologies associated with them. This article is not going to be about Enderby House or the cables, but one of the people associated with them.

A very pleasant place to go for an evening walk or on a Sunday afternoon is Foots Cray Meadows, on the other side of Sidcup. When my husband was alive we used to go there often and walk from Rectory Lane down past the little church to the River Cray and the pretty listed bridge which crosses it. The meadows had been the site of a very, very grand house called Foots Cray Place and you can see some outbuildings, but the house was burnt out and demolished in 1949. There are plenty of websites which will tell you about the importance of it as a great Palladian mansion and about its owners over the centuries, but few mention the man who rented it in the late 19th century and who is buried in the churchyard nearby. That is a shame because he was one of the people most closely involved in the telecommunications revolution which is still with us today, and which began in the mid 19th century.

To return to Greenwich and Enderby Wharf. The most famous story in telecommunications in the mid 19th century is the laying of the Atlantic cable and many Greenwich people, not just the historians, will know that it was made at Enderby Wharf. The cable making company, by then called Glass Elliott, had moved there in 1857. But, as with all these stories it is not that simple.

The Atlantic cable itself had involved numerous complicated deals between individuals – bankers, industrialists, scientists and technocrats. In addition the Atlantic cable was not alone. Following its success cables were laid all round the world – most of them made in Greenwich. One of the most important players in setting up this vast international network – which we take for granted today was the man who rented Foots Cray Place from 1875 to his death in 1896.

His name was John Pender. He was a Scot from a lower middle class background who had made a fortune speculating on the cotton

New book shines a light on local entrepreneur market in the Manchester Cotton Exchange. By the 1850s he was extremely wealthy, still under 40 and taking an interest in the new ideas about telegraph systems and telegraph services. In 1852 he became director of the English and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company, one of the earliest such companies set up to built telegraphs. In this case from England to Ireland. In those days there were many setbacks to the technology, but each failure was a lesson towards a better result the next time. It was clear that while cables were laid short distances under the sea and between nations, the one vital cable which needed to be laid was under the Atlantic between Europe and America – a distance which seemed insurmountable. In 1856 the Atlantic Telegraph Company was set up and one of its directors was John Pender.

The first two attempts to lay a cable across the Atlantic failed.

In 1864 a new company was formed to be sited at Enderby Wharf in Greenwich - the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company – usually known as Telcon.

Pender had become the chair of the company and from then on Telcon worked closely with the various companies Pender set up to build and operate cable systems around the world. Around the same time a deal was reached whereby Brunel’s huge ship, Great Eastern, would be used to take the cable across the Atlantic, and, following another failure in 1865 the Atlantic cable was laid the following year to great success.

It had been made in Greenwich as successive cables were to be for the next hundred years.

In 1894, speaking after a celebratory dinner, Pender said that they were by then eleven cables under the North Atlantic ‘wherever the British flag was flying and commerce promised a fair prospect of remuneration cables had been laid... there were 152,000 miles of submarine cable in the world...as well as 2 million miles of land line and a Pacific cable was projected ... his company had begun in business by sending 400,000 messages a year in 1894 it was two million’.

Pender’s role was that of an entrepreneur and it was one which required great skill and boundless

energy. Telegraph facilities were provided by private companies, yet needed the support of governments who often thought such facilities should be publicly owned, thus his role was partly to negotiate with governments in areas into which telegraphy was being introduced.

He had to put together complicated financial packages involving bankers and investors on an international scale. He also had to ensure that the technology involved gave the best result possible and that improvements were introduced. Once installed, systems had to be managed and this also had to be set up. For the vast majority of these contracts cables were made at Enderby Wharf in Greenwich.

This story about the enabling of international communications has come a long way from our small group of people in Greenwich hopefully looking for a future for Enderby House and also the wide expanses of Foots Cray Meadows, which are now a public park. When John Pender died he was buried in the family tomb in All Saints grave yard. The huge cross over it was refurbished in 1993 by

Great Eastern underway 1865 the telecommunications company he had founded in 1872. In Greenwich we have almost nothing which commemorates either Pender or the international network which he built up.

The Enderby Group has done what we can to publicise what happened here on the Greenwich Riverside.

2. The Order will come into operation on 25th June 2018 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 2 Weeks. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading. North West bound Into Paston Crescent from oppersite Gavestone Crescent.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted as and when signed. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
