Meet the local theatre company working with youth offenders to inspire change

L

ondon Bubble theatre company made a name for themselves in the borough last summer, when they performed their summer show ‘Tales from the Arabian Nights’ in Greenwich Park.

Prior to that, the company ran a project called ‘Together We Are More’ in schools across the borough, and continues to deliver its ongoing Speech Bubbles project in primary schools across Greenwich. But London Bubble is more than your average arts organisation.

Southwark Youth Offending Service to create drama-based interventions with young people who have been caught up in the criminal justice system.

Three times a year, London Bubble works with a group of disenfranchised, often angry and sometimes defensive young men. Dubbed their ‘Creative Voices’ scheme, the company uses drama to support and develop the social and emotional skills of these young people, working to awaken their creativity over the course of five sessions.

The partnership first came about when Southwark Council looked to London Bubble to help with its ‘1000 Journeys’ initiative – a project to help the council find out what life was like for a cross section of young people across the borough.

“We were asked to use drama to engage some of the more ‘hard-toreach’ groups of young people in Southwark,” recalls Marie Vickers, Project Leader of Young Theatre Makers for London Bubble. “We created fictional characters inspired by the experiences of the young people themselves; it was exciting to them get involved,” she says.

“After that, I think there was a mutual realisation that London Bubble’s ethos and interest in drama as a tool for social and emotional wellbeing fitted well with Southwark Youth Offending Service’s desistance strategy and they began to discuss other potential projects with us.”

Fast forward five years and London Bubble continues to work with the council to engage youth offenders via theatre. “Our process is playful and the emphasis is on creativity,” explains Marie. The projects are often involve developing practical skills, too. For example, the company’s project ‘The Way Into Work’ is geared towards equipping young people with interview skills.

“We begin the project with a short play [which] depicts a character is a tricky situation, torn between earning legitimate cash in a minimum wage job or earning a lot more through criminal activity. The young people then discuss [the character’s] situation, the pressures of his home life, how he deals with his feelings and what his life might be like in the future.

It’s an effective starting point.”

Unsurprisingly, given the nature of the work, there are often bumps along the road to creating a piece of work. Marie points out that many of the young people make it clear they don’t want to be there. “It’s our job to make it as interesting as we can and hopefully work through some of the initial negativity,” she says. “We know that drama isn’t for everyone. When we are devising work, we make it clear that we are not there to impose ideas or make judgements but to offer a space for stories to be told.”

The ultimate aim of of the Creative Voices sessions, says Marie, is for those involved with the project to take away an increased sense of

self-belief. “These young people have often had a negative experience of education and authority,” she says.

“It’s really hard for a lot of young men to talk about feelings but through the characters we create and stories that we develop, they engage in lots of emotionally charged conversations and hopefully they benefit in some way from these reflections.”

For Marie, it’s the journey and all the little things that happen along the way, from the first group session to the last, that she loves most about the job.

For example, when someone in the group smiles for the first time, or feels comfortable enough to take off their coat and engage with the session.

The final shows too, she says, are often of a high standard. “[The shows] might be performed to very small audiences in the back room of a council building but there have been some highly relevant, very beautiful and genuinely moving moments.”

A CELEBRATION OF SIR IAN MCKELLEN

O

n Sunday 27 May, Greenwich Picturehouse will be airing the live premier of McKellen: Playing the Part, which is taking place at London’s BFI Southbank and hosted by Graham Norton.

Built around a 14-hour interview directed by Joe Stephenson, Playing the Part uncovers Sir Ian McKellen’s life, from his wartime childhood to becoming a star of the stage and screen, and a leading campaigner for equality.

“I’m a 30-year-old actor earning £50 a week,” states a younger Sir Ian in the trailer for the film. “I had no ambitions to become a film actor,” the star says, reflecting back on his career before his mainstream film breaks as the supervillain Magneto in the X-men films and wizard Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s three-film adaptation of Lord of the Rings.

Sir Ian made his first professional appearance in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre, where he played the part

of Roper in A Man for All Seasons.

Then, after four years in regional repertory theatres, he made his first West End appearance in A Scent of Flowers, which was regarded as a "notable success".

The star became a well-known figure in British theatre in the 70s and 80s, performing frequently with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, where he played several leading Shakespearean roles, including the title role in Macbeth and Iago in Othello - both award-winning productions directed by Trevor Nunn.

Sir Ian has in fact taken film roles throughout his career — landing his first leading role in 1980 as D. H. Lawrence in Priest of Love.

However, it was not until the 90s that he became more widely recognised for his work in film, initially for his supporting role as a South African tycoon in the critically acclaimed 1993 film Six Degrees of Separation, in which he starred with Stockard Channing, Donald

Sutherland, and Will Smith.

While Sir Ian had made his sexual orientation known to fellow actors early on in his stage career, it was not until 1988 that he came out to the general public.

In a programme aired on BBC Radio 3, he debated Section 28 of the 1988 Local Government Act — which stated that councils should not "intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" — with the conservative journalist Peregrine Worsthorne, and declared himself gay.

In 1989, Sir Ian became a cofounder of Stonewall, the UK-based LGBT rights lobby group named after the Stonewall riots. Today, the actor is also patron of LGBT History Month and Pride London among other LGBT causes.

In October 2017, Sir Ian returned to theatre to played King Lear at Chichester Festival Theatre, a role which he said was likely to be his "last big Shakespearean part".

The star is due to perform the role again when the play transfers to the Duke of York's Theatre in the West End this summer.

In watching Playing the Part, audiences will have the opportunity to hear some of Sir Ian’s personal thoughts and reflections on his life and career, and celebrate one of Britain’s greatest living actors on his birthday weekend.

Vintage jazz at Severndroog Castle S

everndroog Castle will be hosting its first late night event of the season on Friday 25 May. Guests are invited to explore the castle after hours, accompanied by the soulful tones of vintage jazz singer Jess De Giudici.

A blues and jazz singer of ItalianAmerican roots, Jess has sung at critically acclaimed festivals inclusive of the European Jazz Expo, Porretta Soul Festival and Roots and Blues Festival.

Since moving to the UK in 2010, Jess has performed at a number of prestigious venues including the Barbican Centre, the London Science Museum, and the Gordon Ramsey Restaurant.

On 25 May, Jess will be performing in the courtyard of the Severndroog Castle, where guests can sit back, relax and enjoy a cocktail amongst the unusual surroundings of ancient woodland and the sounds of 40s/50s jazz.

The book is a sweeping history of the United States through the lens of empire — and an incisive look forward as the nation retreats from the global stage.

Empire in Retreat is an exploration of the United States’ territorial expansion after independence, through hegemonic rule following World War II, to what Victor describes as the nation’s current imperial retreat and its uneasy relationship with the idea of itself as an empire.

At Friday’s event, Victor will discuss his three definitions of empire — territorial, informal and institutional — that help to explain the nation’s past and forecast a future in which the

United States will cease to play an imperial role. At this pivotal juncture in American history, Victor’s latest book offers a uniquely global perspective likely to be widely read and discussed across a range of fields.

Victor is a British academic who specialises in Latin America and the Caribbean, and a respected authority on international relations and foreign policy. He is professor emeritus at the University of London, honorary professor of the Institute of the Americas, University College London, and associate fellow in the U.S. and Americas Program, Chatham House, where he was Director from 2001 to 2006.

A play for young people exploring place, identity and belonging C

Castaways is the second part of Mandala’s trilogy, which focuses on ‘Place, Identity and Belonging’.

The company’s debut play, Night Light, explored the fate of young people seeking asylum who arrived in the country as unaccompanied minors.

Following the workshops, which took place in Luton, Woolwich, Oxford and Stockton-on-Tees, Mandala’s founder and artistic director Yasmin Sidhwa and playwright Atiha Sen Gupta formed their story: three teenagers born on the same day, in the same town but with very different backgrounds. The teens – Sam, Asha and Kieran – were

a close-knit trio, until a shocking event blows their world apart and their friendship with it.

“We ran 28 outreach workshop sessions with 227 young people (213 from BAME/white lower socioeconomic backgrounds) between March and July 2017, using drama techniques, discussion and creative writing and looking at ideas around what makes young people connect or disconnect to the communities they grow up in,” explains Yasmin.

“Their input on what they were proud of in their town or city, whether they ever felt like an outsider and what provoked them to feel like this, as well as their views on friendship groups, extremism and vulnerability all fed ideas into both the draft and the final script.”

Yasmin and Atiha took a rehearsed reading of the draft script back to the four communities last autumn, offering the young participants a chance to feed back on what they thought worked, what they’d change and whether they felt the script represented their collective stories.

“Their feedback again helped Atiha and I to shape the storyline and see what needed developing or changing,” said Yasmin.

Theatre prior to founding Mandala, the most satisfying part of the creative process has been the opportunity to work with so many young people over the series of workshops. “To get their input not only in the initial stages but also further along when a draft script was in place, means we feel that the work is authentic, appeals to a young audience, and reflects and challenges the current situation in England (and also in Europe), and is therefore very relevant.”

Yasmin has also found that working with young professional actors from black, Asian and while lower socio-economic backgrounds has brought another layer to the production, as these performers have brought their own experiences and views on belonging to the final play.

“The young actors in the show feel that they are expressing something very relevant and topical, and the amount of work we have done on their interpretation of the characters they are portraying has enabled them to create characters that are very rounded, to the point where audiences believe they are sharing their own personal stories on stage,” she says.

Yasmin hopes Castaways will reach both mainstream audiences and those whose experience is

contained within the play. “We want the audience to be moved by what happens to the characters in the play and to feel motivated to do or see things differently,” she explains. “We especially want the play to reach young people who may not go to the theatre normally and to be affected by the power

of live theatre and the stories on stage.”

astaways is a new play coming to the Tramshed Theatre in Woolwich, in collaboration with Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre and as part of the Family Arts Festival.

Produced by diversityled, Oxford-based theatre company Mandala, it’s an exploration of the nature of friendship, trauma and tribal loyalties, but most interestingly, Castaways has been developed through creative workshops with young people from marginalised backgrounds.

Cutty Sark Gardens Festival

L

ooking for something family-friendly during the bank holiday weekend?

The Cutty Sark Gardens Festival is a community-based event running from 25-28 May, featuring street food, live music, and activities for children. The emphasis of the festival is food and drink, with lots of artisan groceries and pop-up kitchens for visitors to enjoy. Festival bars will offer a wide selection of national and international craft beers, ales, ciders, and wines.

Besides the food, there will also be outdoor markets selling jewellery, clothing, and handmade crafts, as well as a line-up of live music over the entire weekend. To keep the younger visitors entertained, there will be a chalk graffiti wall and facepainting on Saturday and Sunday.

The Greenwich Book Festival, taking place on 15 and 16 June, will feature everything from writing workshops to political debates. There will also be conversations with authors, pop-up bookstores, and food and drink stalls.

The festival is hosted by the University of Greenwich and the Old Royal Naval College campus, which is situated on the banks of the Thames, providing the perfect setting for this summer weekend.

The festival starts with a party: Paula McLain, Lissa Evans, and Louise Candlish join Diana Evans and Imogen Hermes Gowar. The weekend finishes with a ‘South of the River’ quiz. Other events include a walking tour of Victorian Greenwich, as well as a discussion of suffragette history.

The Greenwich Book Festival also aims to be diverse and to include all ages, and will feature workshops for children and face-painting to entertain younger visitors.

Access to the festival itself is free, and tickets for individual events are intended to be as affordable as possible, with prices usually under £10. Some events are free as well.

Blackheath's award-winning Nepalese restaurant

I

f you live in Blackheath, you’ve probably spotted Everest Inn even if you haven’t dined there. Perched on the edge of the heath, the Nepalese restaurant is a popular spot with a loyal base of returning customers – many of whom have become friends of restaurant owner and manager Yadav Bhandari.

That’s not over-egging the relationship – this coming September, Everest Inn is taking a group of their favourite diners to Nepal, organised through Yadav’s family, who also run a travel agent business.

Indian cuisine has been in the UK for over 200 years and became increasingly popular with the rise of the curry house. Despite having enjoyed Indian cuisine for as long as I can remember, I was unfamiliar with the dishes of its northern neighbour, Nepal, until my visit to Everest Inn. “The trend of eating Nepalese food in London is becoming popular,” Yadav tells me. The fundamental differences, he says, are mainly to do with the cooking style which, in Nepalese

cuisine, favours clean, fresh flavours with not too much ghee (clarified butter), oil or artificial colouring.

What better place to try Nepalese food for the first time than at the restaurant which took home the award for dining experience of the year at the London Curry Awards earlier this month? Not only that, the restaurant won Best Nepalese Restaurant of the Year at the national Asian Curry Awards in 2016, and has served several celebrity guests including Joanna Lumley, whose thank you note to Yadav and family hangs proudly on the restaurant wall.

The Bhandari family are originally from Nepal’s beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara, where Yadav and his head chef travel back to every year to visit local villages and look for authentic cooking inspiration. “We make things slightly differently to how they’re served in Nepal, to suit customer taste,” explains Yadav, speaking of the need to reduce the spice levels a tad to suite the British palette.

We began our meal by sampling the Paneer Tikka Saslik, perfectly spiced soft cheese which was served

with a light mint and yoghurt dip, and presented in canapé form – fitting for the restaurant's fine-dining ethos. We also opted for a plate of the Tandoori lamb chops which were tender and with more meat than fat or bone (a ratio that, when flipped, is often the downfall of meat on-the-bone).

Next came the momo – Nepalese dumplings which in this case were filled with chicken – which I was excited to try because of its reputation as a staple of the cuisine. These were perfectly soft on the outside with just the right amount of chew in the centre and heavy on the cumin, but not unpleasantly so.

For mains we sampled the chilli flake tandoori salmon, which came doused in a rich and spicy, creamy sauce and with bombay potatoes nestled beneath. We also had a portion of the Gorkhali chicken curry which was just as Yadav described: fresh, spicy and with chunky bites of green chilli adding both crunch and kick. The star of the show, though, was the lakeside fish.

Hailing from Pokhara, it has become one of Everest Inn’s signature dishes: white fish marinated and pan-fried

with spices, crushed mustard, lemon juice, spring onion, garlic and ginger.

The result? An unusual and hugely satisfying combination of tasting sweet, sour, indulgently battered yet surprisingly fresh.

Dessert was a winner too – pistachio Kulfi (Indian ice cream) with homemade gulab jamun (warm, syrupy, cake-like balls). The strong taste of cardamom lent the pudding a welcome, unusual edge.

We washed this down with a bottle of a 2016 Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc which was crisp and fruity, but the menu also offers cocktails and Nepalese Gurkha beer, as well as the more typical lager names.

Everest Inn has two sister branches in Kent and another in Perth, Scotland. Yadav says that if business continues to bloom, they’ll look to open a fifth branch in either Maidstone or Canterbury. For now, the family-run restaurant continues to forge connections in the community, organising charity events and offering local school groups the chance to come in for lessons in Nepalese cooking.

Making your wishes known You could tell your friends and family about what you want for your funeral.

It might help to write your wishes down to make things easier for your family and friends to remember. Dying Matters has a leaflet called My Funeral Wishes, which you can use to record your instructions.

You can also write down your wishes in a document that is sometimes referred to as an advance care plan or advance statement.

Writing down your wishes in an advance statement can make it easier for people to

understand them and follow them in the future. You can also include how you want any religious or spiritual needs to be reflected in your care or funeral.

Another way to make your wishes known is simply to write them in your will, although this is the only part of a will that is not binding.

You should also make a separate copy of your wishes in case the will is discovered too late to organise your funeral. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you save your wishes somewhere safe and easy to find and tell someone close to you where they are.

Planning your funeral You don’t need to wait until you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness or nearing the end of life to think about planning your funeral.

• leaving money in your estate to cover the funeral costs when you die. When the time comes, the executor of the estate will take care of the funeral bill.

If your loved ones can’t afford a funeral, there are other options that can help to reduce funeral costs. For example, if they are getting certain benefits they can apply for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the government to help pay for the funeral.

Charlton Park Academy Trust Proposal to add specialist primary age provision for up to 40 neurological, SLD, PMLD, complex medical and autism places at Charlton Park Academy, with effect from September 2018.

Notice is given that the Charlton Park Academy Trust intends to make a prescribed alteration to Charlton Park Academy, a special academy, for widening our age range to include primary aged pupils as part of our specialist SEN provision for up 40 pupils with medical, neurological, severe, or profound and multiple learning difficulties, or autism needs with effect from 1 September 2018.

This proposal would not affect existing provision or admission arrangements, which are via the Academy directly as its own admissions authority, other than that pupils of primary age with high needs will be considered for admission to the school. Facilities will be adapted to meet needs of pupils admitted.
