Classic Contact You can see the classic science fiction drama movie Contact at the Royal Observatory on 28 April as part of the Universe Unseen season. The 1997 film, which starred Jodie Foster, is based on the novel of the same name by astronomer Carl Sagan. Contact focuses on radio astronomer Dr. Ellie Arroways's search for extraterrestrial signs of intelligent life. And after the film you can listen to a Royal Observatory astronomer talking about the possibility of finding and communicating with life in our galaxy.

Preserving Eltham

T

here’s a great community vibe in Eltham town centre these days. That’s in no small part down to the efforts of a few devoted community minded people, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that Passey Place is a hive of activity.

And if you venture down there on the fourth Sunday of the month, the friendly faces of local producers, who are selling their wares at the market, will greet you.

One of the stallholders, Steve Page, has been instrumental in establishing the market and can be found selling his homemade chutneys and preserves there every month.

But the culinary world hasn’t always been where Steve plied

“I grow all of the chillies I use in my back garden and source as much of the fruit and vegetables locally as I can.” his trade. He did, in fact, work as an international banker for many years, an occupation that Steve says, “Very nearly killed” him. And so he turned his hand to pickling and what started as a hobby to assist with stress relief has now become a fully-fledged business.

Now, Steve - who also performs locally as one half of the acclaimed singing duo Brothers of

Swing - produces his preserves at home in Eltham, where he has lived for most of his life.

“I grow all of the chillies I use in my back garden and source as much of the fruit and vegetables locally as I can.” Steve told me.

And as well as selling his products he now helps to organise the Producers Market for Greenwich Council. The market attracts shoppers from around

the area to buy locally produced products, including craft and foodstuffs.

Steve explains, “Our tagline is Raise it, Grow it, Cook it or Make it. If you do any of that, you’re welcome to come to the market.”

And the market has proved to be a very popular addition to the local calendar, attracting people into the town from all across the locale.

“I just love doing things for Eltham.” Steve explains, “We want to encourage people to come into Eltham and get people to join in.”

An American in Paris in Greenwich

A

udiences in Greenwich will be treated to a special treat on 16 May when Christopher Wheeldon’s enchanting production of An American Paris is screened.

The musical, which ran in the West End at the Dominion Theatre until earlier this year, won an Olivier Award for the incredible set design and was visually so stunning, I struggled to find superlatives to do it justice when I watched the show live.

Christopher Wheeldon is world renowned within the ballet fraternity and his reimagined version of the Oscar winning film (that starred Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron) is filled with so much graceful and gorgeous dance, you’ll be left thinking you’ve been immersed in your very own dream sequence by the end.

The musical is a fitting tribute to the 1951 film, with nods to classic styles of dance entwined with a glorious score by George Gershwin. It’s performed amongst Bob Cowley’s dreamlike set, which perfectly captures the refinement and romance of Paris, making for an awe-inspiring visual spectacular.

Set in liberated Paris after World War II, everything has an enchanting optimism and you won’t be able to take your eyes off of Ashley Day as Jerry Mulligan, an American GI striving to make it as a painter in a city suddenly bursting with hope and possibility. His matinee idol looks coupled with his faultless and fluid movement are a masterpiece on their own.

When he is joined by Leanne Cop-who plays a young dancer called Lise-the pair exude an effortless elegance with breathtaking sequences, which will melt your heart.

It’s such a rare treat to get to see a big budget West End show on the big screen and the sanguine nature of An American in Paris will leave you with a glorious sense of positivity.

Capital Art's bumper exhibition T

he ever-popular Capital Art Gallery in Eltham will host, what owner Karl Sproat describes as “by far the biggest exhibition” he has ever put on next weekend.

Artists from all over the country will bring work to the bijou gallery for a weekend celebrating a rich variety of

styles of art.

“The name of the Capital Art Gallery has really got out there.”

Karl told me and went on to explain that the exhibition will feature a huge mixture of mediums including porcelain, glass, jewellery and much more.

And it’s through Karl’s devotion to

championing art in the area that so many people are being enticed to visit and exhibit at the little gallery on Well Hall Parade.

“There are more and more artists being attracted to this gallery and my gallery is always open to people of all levels. I don’t turn anyone away.” Karl explained, “It’s unlike any

other gallery because I’m trying to take the snobbery out of art.”

The gallery opened in 2015 and displays up to 500 pieces of art, with the displays changed every four weeks in order for regular visitors to enjoy a fresh experience on every visit. Professional and up and coming artists are welcome

to display their work, which means there is always a rich variety to gaze upon.

Songs of love and hate Sebastian Faulks' WWI novel brought to stage

Bromley’s Churchill Theatre is marking the 100th anniversary of the armistice of the First World War with a five-night run of Rachel Wagstaff’s adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’s bestselling novel Birdsong.

Birdsong tells a mesmerising story of love and courage, before

and during the war. In pre-war France, a young Englishman, Stephen Wraysford, embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle Azaire that turns their worlds upside down. As the war breaks out, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and through the

sprawling tunnels that lie deep underground. Faced with the unprecedented horror of the war, Stephen clings to the memory of Isabelle and the idyll of his former life as his world explodes around him.

Headed up by Tom Kay and Madeleine Knight as Stephen Wraysford and Isabelle Azaire, the

production, seen by over 200,000 people, has received 4- and 5-star reviews. Sebastian Faulks said, “This is the fourth and final tour of Rachel Wagstaff’s adaptation of my novel and, as it coincides with the centenary of the Armistice in 1918, it comes with an additional air of celebration. The play has had a long life since its first incarnation

Alexandra Players bring Miss Marple to Charlton The subject of murder is on the agenda for Charlton’s Alexandra Players, writes Nicky Sweetland...

The acclaimed local drama group has chosen to present one of Agatha Christie’s classics A Murder is Announced as their next production.

And it’s come at a time when Christie’s works have hit the headlines, with the recent BBC adaptation of Ordeal by Innocence setting pulses racing and tongues wagging.

But there’s also still a real appetite to see Christie’s work live on stage and the interactive production of Witness For the Prosecution at London County Hall has helped to bring a new and younger audience into the world of the whodunit. Let’s also not forget the stage juggernaut that is The Mousetrap, which recently celebrated 60 years in the West End. And so it seems the Alexandra Players have

chosen the perfect time to stage another of the author’s trademark murder mysteries.

Chairman of the Alexandra Players, Roy Moore told me, “Interestingly for a long established theatre group we have never put on an Agatha Christie before, so I suppose it’s about time really. A couple of our members wanted to have a go at directing an Agatha Christie so we told them to go and find one.”

And this particular Christie classic features one of her most beloved characters, the Grandmother of murder mystery, Miss Marple.

“It’s very much a classic Agatha Christie. It’s middle class, middle England.” Roy explains.

A newspaper announces that a murder will happen and thinking it to be a game, a gaggle of well-to–do folks gather for a party at a stately home. But after the lights come down

me, “We get used to adapting our tiny stage and making it appear bigger to the audience.”

And so the petite performance space will be transformed for the occasion and the cast of 12, which is comprised of some local stage stalwarts and some new talent, will performed what Roy describes as “Really top-notch entertainment but not just for Agatha Christie fans.”

A Murder is Announced follows the company’s tremendously successful production of The Deep Blue Sea earlier this year and if the recent high standard of their productions is anything to go by, local audiences are in for a real treat. and shots ring out, it turns out that the violent threat was a real one after all. As luck would have it, the feisty amateur sleuth Miss Marple happens to be staying at a spa nearby and

offers her services in an attempt to find the ruthless killer.

But staging such a drama at the bijou little Alexandra Hall in Charlton is no mean feat, although Roy assures

Wake up and smell the coffee F

orget dinner, breakfast has become the new social event, particularly for those who enjoy a smashed avocado.

Yes, I’m referring to Millennials, who appear to prefer to head out for a morning meal these days rather than an evening feast.

And despite the fact that I’m just a little bit too old to class myself as part of the digital generation, I have to admit that there is something rather wonderful about meeting up with friends at the start of the day.

With this in mind I was pleased to learn that a new

establishment was opening just around the corner from my house and so as soon as I could, I tried it out.

The Westmount Café recently opened in Eltham and has already become a popular destination for those seeking a bit of brunch or a midday snack. Bedecked with small pot plants, dark wood benches and antique-style metal fittings, there is a very trendy feel of shabby chic and with an abundance of natural light, the experience is one of relaxation and calm.

morning and were taken with the friendly nature of the staff. The menu isn’t huge, but it offers a really good range of breakfast treats from the traditional English to the more modern alternative and I noticed a decent selection of lunchtime snacks was also on offer.

I chose to have scrambled egg on champagne loaf and added on bacon, sausage and smashed avocado (the avocado made me feel a bit more young and cool!).

It was delicious, but sadly my eyes were bigger than my tummy and I got nowhere near finishing it. My companion selected a

more modest mid-morning treat and went for a simple ham and cheese croissant, which they said was excellent. We had a couple of cups of coffee to go with it, while we enjoyed watching the comings and goings of the people in and around the café.

The Westmount Café has brought some real vibrancy to the bottom of Westmount Road and with the news that it has been granted a licence to sell alcohol, meaning the café will be opening its doors for longer and serving a more extensive menu, it’s a place I will definitely be returning to.
