Learning the craft

W

hether or not you were a member of the Scouts or the Girl Guides growing up, chances are you’re familiar with both youth movements.

But only slightly younger than the Scouts is the Woodcraft Folk, a youth movement born in Deptford with a commitment to pacifism, social justice and the principles of cooperation at its core.

Founded in 1925 and grown by volunteers, Woodcraft Folk is a UK-based educational movement for children and young people that has been a registered charity since 1965. Today, the organisation has over 300 groups operating across the country, and holds national and international camps every few years.

“Woodcraft Folk is unique in being an organisation for and led by young people,” explains Stuart Walker, chair of the national General Council of Woodcraft Folk. The groups are split up by age and have wholesome, earthy names like ‘woodchips’ (under six-year-olds) and ‘pioneers’ (10-12-year-olds).

“The young members typically draw up their own programmes and run their own campaigns.”

When the Woodcraft Folk began in Deptford, its ambition was to present social education opportunities through outdoor activities to working class children in south-east London.

The co-operative woods in Abbey Wood was the site where the first Woodcraft camp was held.

The organisation quickly became national, with groups popping up across the country, while the Woodcraft Folk played an important role overseas, too. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the group was key to the success of the Kindertransport, rescuing young people, most of whom were Jewish, from Europe – saving them from the horrors about to befall.

“Our international connections have always been strong,” recalls Stuart. “We’ve continued to support young migrants and refugees since then, both practically and through campaigning.”

Whilst it shares many of the same historical roots as the Scouting movement, Woodcraft Folk's direct predecessor was actually the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, an organisation led by John Hargrave, an ex-Scout Commissioner.

Hargrave had broken with what he considered to be the Scouts' militaristic approach in the years following the First World War. However his leadership style was seen by many as overly authoritarian, and so in 1925, AngloIrish writer Leslie Paul established Woodcraft Folk as a breakaway from Hargrave’s movement.

Today, Woodcraft Folk has one of the youngest groups of national trustees of any UK charity. It provides networking opportunities

for young people across the UK, as well as internationally, and helps young people mature into active, participating citizens with a cooperative outlook and strong sense of morality.

Stuart says that while Woodcraft Folk is not primarily a campaigning organisation, its members have led national campaigns on demilitarising schools, against climate change and in support of child migrants and refugees.

“We are members of the international socialist youth umbrella the International Falcon Movement,” he explains. “We have good links with youth groups throughout the world and have brought delegations of young people from Palestine, Western Sahara and Indonesia to our camps.”

The Woodcraft Folk has two key priorities today: widening participation and returning to the ethics and ambitions of its founders.

“We’re proactively targeting children from disadvantaged communities and our aspiration is universal access,” explains Stuart.

“One of the most exciting projects we’re currently planning is the International camp of 2020.

It’s called Common Ground and will be held in Kent.” It’s also no small task – the group are looking to host over three thousand people from all around the world at the camp.

‘Span the World with Friendship’ is a key Woodcraft Folk motto. As such, their camps remain open to all young people interested in international cooperation, social justice, the environment and making the world a better place.

A tale of sound and fury A

‘riotous’ and ‘playful’ reinvention of Macbeth that puts the witches at the centre of the brutal, prophesied tragedy is coming to Greenwich Theatre.

The production, staged by 6FootStories, transforms Shakespeare’s witches into three gypsy fortune tellers, who play with the fates of Macbeth and all his company, delighting in how far they can push the blood and murder.

6FootStories is a collaboration between writer-performers Jake Hassam and Nigel Munson, who met whilst training at the Oxford School of Drama. “We were both tall and Jake originally wanted to make a company for tall people, but then we started collaborating with people who were shorter than us,” laughs Nigel.

Together with a third performer, Ben Riddle, the trio have the challenge of performing Macbeth with just three actors and only 70 minutes to tell the tale. As such,

of [Macbeth’s] best lines and given them to the witches.”

This role-swapping, immersive production is set in a rat-infested junkyard filled with intricate props made exclusively out of recycled objects, including a wheelbarrow which doubles up as Macbeth’s throne. The design was inspired by another of 6FootStories’ projects –

the Gypsy Lodge – a fortune teller’s parlour they tour around UK festivals, offering a theatrical tarot reading experience to those who enter.

6FootStories first pitched the idea for their Macbeth adaptation to the Hope Theatre in Islington two years ago. The theatre liked the concept, and offered Jake and Nigel a slot in two months’

time to perform it, leaving the pair with just eight weeks to create the full show. Having devised two productions together previously, and collaborated on several other projects, they weren’t too phased by the challenge and managed to pull it off. “We have this chemistry together when we perform,” says Nigel. “We have a shared love of big, fantastical stories, science fiction, black comedy and the absurd.” According to Nigel, it’s their passions and mutual love of particular theatrical styles that makes co-creating shows a smooth and enjoyable process for the duo.

Two years on and 6FootStories are looking forward to performing their Macbeth, fuelled by physical theatre and live music, here in Greenwich.

The Barnsley Nightingale alights in Bromley

T

he acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Kate Rusby is bringing her much-loved music to Bromley’s Churchill Theatre. Born and raised in Barnsley, Yorkshire, Kate is often referred to as the ‘Barnsley Nightingale’ and is one of the best known contemporary English folk

singers.

Kate’s career in music spans over 25 years. She’s collaborated with the likes of Ronan Keating and English folk singersongwriter Seth Lakeman in the past, and headlined various British national folk festivals. The Guardian described her as “a superstar of the British acoustic scene”, while the BBC referred

to her as “the first lady of young folkies”. In 1999, Kate became one of few folk singers to be nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize.

The combination of her expressive vocals and engaging Yorkshire wit no doubt contribute to Kate’s continuous popularity.

She’s known to possess that rare ability to transport her

audience, touching them emotionally while making each song come to life within their imagination.

Kate’s upcoming concert promises to entertain audiences with much-loved classics from her back catalogue as well as a selection of songs from her latest studio album ‘Life in a Paper Boat’, released in 2016.

As ever, she will be joined on stage by her talented band of British folk musicians.

GREENWICH ART CHALLENGE

T

he Greenwich Art Challenge is returning to Capital Art Gallery in Eltham this Saturday.

Now in its second year, the competition is open to artists of all levels and any medium is accepted.

“Last year’s event was a huge success,” said Karl Sproat, owner of Capital Art Gallery. “Budding new artists will enjoy this event as every level is welcomed.”

The cost of entry is £20 per person and artists must register before the 14th April to take part.

On the day, artists will report to Capital Art Gallery between 9am11am to have their blank canvas or worksheet stamped, before

venturing off to paint their chosen subject, which must be within the boundaries of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Artists must return their finished artwork to the gallery before 8pm that same day.

On the following day, Sunday 15th April, all submitted artwork will be hung on display at Capital Art Gallery for the public to view, purchase and judge. The winner will be awarded a hamper, donated by the CO-OP in Well Hall Parade, plus free exhibition space at Capital Art Gallery for six months. Two runner-up artists will also be awarded three months of free exhibition space at the gallery.

reenwich Market is filled with tantalising lunch options, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays. But one stall that always catches my eye is Pimp My Ramen.

The offering? Burger patties cased in ramen noodles instead of buns.

Harry delos Santos, 31, is the mastermind behind this creation. His inspiration was Keizo Shimamoto’s original ramen burger, which took New York’s world-famous food market, Smorgasboard, by storm in 2013. I was living in New York the year the ramen burger took off and vividly remember the hype around this culinary fusion. People would queue for well over an hour to get their hands on one. I always regretted not trying the ramen burger myself before returning to the UK, so the sight of Harry’s stand in Greenwich Market stopped me in my tracks.

Harry had heard about Keizo’s ramen burger and decided to have a go at creating his own.

To his surprise, it worked a treat.

He began experimenting with the perfect combination of fillings and soon after, his classic ramen burger was born: an Aberdeen Angus beef patty in ramen noodle buns with shredded lettuce, Monterey jack cheese, a fried egg and a choice of chilli sauce. In March 2014, Harry applied to sell his creation at London markets and Greenwich offered him a spot. How did Harry’s creation compare to Keizo’s original, I wondered. “I’ve met people who have tried both,” he tells me.

“Obviously they were eating mine at the time, but they said it was better,” he recalls with a bashful smile.

For Keizo in New York, the ramen burger was a marrying of his Japanese heritage with his American upbringing. For Harry, who moved over to the UK from the Philippines in 2009 – originally as a nurse – the creation was a chance to infuse a staple of American cuisine with flavours from his home country. With his original burger proving a success, Harry expanded the menu to include a pork option.

Braised pork is a popular dish in

the Philippines, plus Harry was aware of the pulled pork zeitgeist sweeping across the UK and US. He also added an Indian-inspired veggie patty, which soon became the most popular item on the menu and is now Harry’s favourite too – arguably because he’s eaten the others so many times. The bad thing about running a market stall, he tells me, is that it becomes difficult to eat your own product.

I decided to sample the classic, but with a little bit of pulled pork too, on Harry’s insistence. Looking at the noodles, woven neatly together to form the burger buns, it was a mystery to me how they stayed so compact (blanching them is the answer apparently).

Biting into the burger, the taste and texture is unexpected, although not unpleasant. In fact, the soft, warm noodles combined with the thick, salty patty are the epitome of comfort food. If you’re suffering from a hangover (which I was, just a little) the ramen burger is the perfect cure. The egg and cheese complete the feast,

while the lettuce adds a touch of subtle, crunchy goodness and the chilli sauce lends the dish a tang that keeps each mouthful interesting. My one criticism would be the thin paper wrap the burger comes served in. Noodles are no substitute for bread when it comes to soaking up the juices, and so a foil wrapping or paper plate would be more appropriate – especially for the pulled pork.

So, what’s next for Harry? “I want to explore more Filipino foods but in a different vessel,” he tells me. “I’m curious to try tacos.

The Philippines was a Spanish colony for ages so we have a lot of similarities in our food to Mexico.”

While I’ll be keeping an eye out for Harry’s next creation, those yet to sample the ramen burger should treat their taste buds to this near unique fusion at Pimp My Ramen.

eptford Cinema will begin its second series of free South Korean film screenings on Monday April 16. The first series of Korean Cinema Echoes, which ran from July 2016 to September 2017, proved incredibly popular with local cinephiles, Asian cinema enthusiasts and people happy to chance it on a free film. The new series will run from April till September, with screenings taking place once a month.

“It all started with me getting in touch with the Korean Cultural Centre to inquire about the screening rights of a certain film,” explains Amos Levin, the programmer at Deptford Cinema responsible for organising the Korean Cinema Echoes series. “It ended in a beautiful friendship!”

Kicking off the 2018 season is Earth, a 1978 film directed by Kim Ki-young, one of South Korea’s most respected auteurs. “Kim Ki-young was a key figure in the golden age of Korean Cinema (1955 - 1972),” Amos explains. He directed classics such as The Housemaid (1960) and The Insect Woman (1972).

“It's a real honour for us to screen one of his films as part of this series, and Earth is a particularly exciting pick as it's so rarely seen,” says

Amos. “Given the popularity of classic Korean films in the last series, I'm very curious to see how this one will be received.”

As well as providing Deptford Cinema with the license to screen particular South Korean films, the Korean Cultural Centre, based near Charing Cross, hosts its own free, weekly screenings throughout the year. Each trimester is curated around a specific theme, the current one being ‘Korean Novels On Screen’. Amos and his team work together with the centre to pick three films from each theme to bring to Deptford Cinema. “People can expect a really wide range of genres, from melodrama to mystery,” he says. “[The films] will offer people a glimpse of what's popular in South Korea and what lives on in its film culture.”

such as The Handmaiden (2016) and Train to Busan (2016) were international hits, Amos points out that most of the films showing in the series are usually unavailable outside of South Korea. And yet, he says, these films could be described collectively as aesthetically, politically and emotionally rich.

So, should you head to Deptford Cinema and check the season out? “If you like your period dramas sumptuous, your thrillers electrifying and your romcoms with just the right amount of cheese, Korean cinema always delivers.”
