The first ever Greenwich Street Food Fest kicks off with a Vegan Vibe on April 6 (6pm-10pm).

Greenwich Market is partnering with Plant Bass LDN: the Vegan-themed event company who champion the best of vegan food with special guests and DJs, to stage the one night only event.

FUTURE FESTIVAL Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF) has announced its full programme for 21 June – 7 July. Running across Royal Greenwich, Royal Docks and Tower Hamlets, the festival of outdoor theatre and performing arts invites audiences to ‘dream a little dream’ over 17 midsummer days.

Public spaces are being transformed with more than 130 performances celebrating dreams of love, struggle, ambition and flight.

This year’s festival has seven world premieres, three UK premieres, a site-specific dance-theatre retelling of Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing against the iconic play’s Thamesmead location, and the return of Greenwich Fair, with 18 UK and international street companies including Ockham’s Razor, Max Calaf and Race Horse Company.

PICTUREHOUSE PLIÉ The internationally renowned Bolshoi Ballet is screening its ballet directly into cinemas across the UK. On Sunday 8 April, the romantic classic Giselle, choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich, is pirouetting into Greenwich Picturehouse.

When Giselle learns that her beloved Albrecht is promised to another woman, she dies of a broken heart in his arms. Oliver, the musical W

ouldn’t it be great if life was like a musical? You know, you could suddenly break into song every time the sunshine made you feel happy, or surrender to your latest heartbreak with a vibrato filled ballad?

Well, apparently it’s not just me who longs for a life filled with jazz hands and tap dancing, as celebrated composer Alexander S. Bermange has written an entire show about it. Called, unsurprisingly, I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical, the show takes the form of a revue and the comedy virtuoso has enlisted a cast of West End stars to perform the premiere at the Crazy Coqs later this month.

Making up a sparkling quartet of performers are Wicked star Suzie Mathers, recent Eurovision You Decide contestant Liam Tamne and X Factor semi-finalist Diana Vickers along with renowned West End leading man Oliver Savile, a south east London resident who took some time off from rehearsals to tell me a bit about the show.

Olivier - who is originally from Buxton in Derbyshire, but has lived in this area for over eight years - has an impressive list of theatre credits under his belt. After being inspired by a production of Blood Brothers at his local theatre as a youngster, he knew a life on the stage was

for him and so after initially doing a BTEC in performing arts in Manchester, made the move to London to complete his training at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

And upon graduation, Oliver went on to star in some of the biggest West End musicals, including Cats, Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera.

Oliver told me, “My very first job out of college was in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and I’ve just been so lucky ever since. I’ve just gone from job to job over the past eight or nine years, so I’ve been very lucky.”

It’s almost as if Oliver’s life has been a musical, in fact. But his really big break came in 2015 when he landed the role of the Winky Prince Fiyero in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria. He went on to be part of the illustrious 10th anniversary cast (which also featured Suzie Mathers) and it was a turning point in the triple threat performer’s career.

“It was honestly the best job I’ve ever done.” Oliver told me and went onto explain how he had seen the show as a teenager ten years earlier, “I thought: I want to do that. Then ten years later I got to play the part. I just loved every second of it.”

Since then Oliver has led an allstar cast for an acclaimed run of Stephen Sondheim’s Company in Aberdeen, a production, which

saw him reunite with Suzie Mathers.

And the pair get to perform together again at the end of this month for the brand new revue show at the Crazy Coqs. Oliver jokes and tells me, “Basically I won’t do a job unless Suzie’s doing it!”

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical sets out to present everything that you could possibly want to know about being a musical theatre performer. The show has been created by iTunes comedy album chart-topper Alexander S. Bermange.

“It’s a song revue with loads of hilarious songs and it’s all about everybody’s journey from drama school all the way through.” Oliver explains, “The stuff he [Alexander S. Bermange] writes is amazing” Oliver also tells me he’s very excited to be working with director Paul Foster, who has gained a formidable reputation over the last few years with productions including A Little Night Music at the Watermill and Annie Get Your Gun at Sheffield Crucible.

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical follows the tremendous success of Bermange’s album Wit and Whimsy, which featured a plethora of West End star turns, including a hilariously funny track called “Stuck in the Ensemble” performed by Oliver Savile.

And with the show being staged in one of the coolest venues in London - which Oliver describes,

as “dead simple and dead chilled” - it might just be the perfect antidote to the rigors of the Easter holidays.

Into the Wilde

romley’s Churchill Theatre is venturing into the Wilde. In a wonderfully witty, deliciously decadent and classic revival of Oscar Wilde’s the Importance of Being Earnest, Gwen Taylor (Coronation Street, Duty Free and Barbara) plays the formidable Lady Bracknell.

Jack wishes to marry Algernon’s cousin, the beautiful Gwendolen, but first he must convince her mother: the fearsome Lady Bracknell, of the respectability of his parents and his past. For Jack, however, this is not as easy as it sounds, having started life abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station. Prepare to take a welcome turn with Wilde’s muchloved Algernon, Jack, Gwendolen and Cecily, as town and country clash in a brilliant and wildly funny story of romance, identity, perambulators and capacious handbags.

The Importance Of Being Earnest is described as “Wilde’s most famous and entertaining play which is set to delight and amuse.” Tell us more.

It is a light and frothy comedy; very funny, very witty and great fun to be a part of. Some people have this perception of Oscar Wilde but the story has stood the test of time. It is a love story – I want my daughter to marry someone for money but she wants to marry the person of her choice who I feel is totally unsuitable. The whole plays looks at who you want to marry, who you fall in love with and who you are allowed to marry. It is extremely relevant, even today.

We’ve had a great reception from the audience so far.

What is your favourite part of the show?

When I am on stage of course!

Seriously though, I love playing Lady Bracknell, I have great fun with her. The costumes are lovely – the crinoline (hoop skirt) is huge, it feels complete separate from

me and I wear an extraordinary hat. The whole set is beautifully dressed – it has an 1895 art Nuevo feel. It really is a good, fun show.

What is the best thing about being on stage?

The audience – there is nothing more satisfying than standing on stage in front of an audience that is reacting to your work. It repays you. Every show gives me a new lease of life.

You’ve been in numerous TV and stage shows, what is your favourite and why?

This ranks very highly, the part is stunning and the company is delightful. I’m having a great time.

This really could be my last tour though – I said it last year but this really could be. You heard it here first! It is fun but exhausting.

You turned 79 last month, how did you celebrate?

I had a lovely time; I was given an extraordinary cake and a beautiful

Gwen Taylor vase from everyone. I am lucky enough to have my husband with me and my friend, Sue Penhalligan who plays Miss Prism in the show and we have a great director. I’m having such a great time. I can’t believe I am 80 next year. Things are definitely getting harder and I am slower but I’ve had a great run. I’ve been non-stop over the past few months, I went straight from one show into panto – I got to fly over the audience, it was wonderful and something to cross off my ‘before I’m 80’ list.

What is your favourite Oscar Wilde quote?

It is one from The Importance Of Being Earnest: “To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.” It makes me laugh every time I hear it.

What interested you to acting?

I was an amateur actor. I was in an unhappy marriage – we should never have married and someone said to me that the only time they

saw me smile was when I was on stage, so I applied for acting school which I left at the grand old age of 30.

Do you remember your first time on stage?

Oh yes, it was a show in Canterbury. I played a drag act – a woman dressed as a man. I looked a real bobby dazzler.

You’ve performed at the Churchill Theatre a few times now, what are you most looking forward to returning?

I really like the theatre and it is close to the shops which is really handy for me to pop out and look around.

oing to the seaside was a great thing to do. As children it was a world of wonder as you peered into rock pools for periwinkles, or waded tentatively through seaweed while thinking of sea monsters, and you could be king of your own sandcastle.

It was fun that could only be had on the coast. Then there was the other stuff: changing into swimwear as mum held a towel around you, while dad hid beneath his jacket to put a new film in the camera, and, of course, sand in the sandwiches. As adults it is all of the above but looked at through the softfocus lens of nostalgia.

In this new exhibition, the Great British Seaside, every custom, tradition and eccentricity is captured by some of the nation’s best photographers. Punch and Judy, deckchairs, donkey rides, beach huts and fish ’n’ chips are all shown along with the Brits in all their glory.

The exhibition begins with Tony RayJones' black and white 1960s photos, where going to the seaside was a much bigger thing than it is today. It was when people went by coach or train maybe just once or twice a year, as opposed to now when it is so easy to jump in the car and be down the coast in an hour. You can see that the people were going to make the most of it come rain or come shine, so the men would sit in the deckchairs in their shirts and ties and Sunday suits, while mums wrapped up warm in jumpers and coats.

As times changed so did fashion, with the advent of more casual clothing and people looking more like they were ready for the beach. In other photos you can also see the changing face of the population.

David Hurn’s 1963 Herne Bay photo show a family looking with a mix of lust and scorn at a young girl in a bikini, smoking. At Bognor Regis in 1967, Hurn catches a white couple staring strangely at a black family.

Martin Parr’s work gets in close and in glorious colour: socks and sandals, kids with ice cream around their mouths, seagulls eating abandoned chips, a family huddled under umbrellas shielding themselves from a downpour, and a woman stretched out in front of a JCB to sunbathe.

Finally, Simon Roberts’ panoramic views are the opposite to Parr’s close up detail and give wide expanses of beach and sky. You can see how people organise their own spaces while being very aware of others. It is as if the beach becomes a microcosm of society as everyone silently, and subconsciously, works towards a happy medium.

The Great British Seaside is an exhibition that everyone can relate to.

One, because everyone takes photos, and, two, because everyone loves the seaside. It appeals both to the nostalgic and to the people-watchers who like to look at society and its quirkiness.

he Greenwich Blues Band will be hitting some high notes on Sunday 8 April in the Earl of Chatham pub.

he band, who formed one year ago, has a truly international line-up with Aundre Mathurin from St Lucia on bass, Chris Harrison from Northumberland on piano, legendary South African trumpeter Claude Deppa, blues singer and harmonica player Louisa Le Marchand, Nigerian supper drummer Timothy Amatah, legendary Nigerian guitarist Eben Oke (the BB King of Lagos) and Seth Danzie from

the Caribbean on saxophones.

The evening is free and starts at 7.30pm with a set from Blues Man Phil Ramocon, plus other guest artists.

Inside you can see prehistoric creatures in cages, watch babies hatching,

What did we think?: In short it was fantastic! From start, when you enter the time machine (a juddering room like a mini cinema with a screen at the front) you’re led by guides. As soon as you enter, you put on your 3D glasses, and the room starts to shake, you’re know you’re in for a good ride.

As you arrive at your destination, the shutters on the screen lift and you’re confronted with a vista

of the Cretaceous era plains 67 million years ago. The 3D CGI is great. The ‘time machine’ sprouts wheels, and off you go, driving amongst the huge beasts to TimeBase 67.

Inside the research base you get to explore what the scientists have found, from huge dino teeth, a gigantic heart in a tube and even feel mounds of dino poo (through plastic gloves, you mums and dads will be relieved to know).

You then get taken to a dinosaur autopsy, which may seem grim initially, but it’s all done in good

humour, and isn’t graphic.

You also visit the incubator room, where you can see different dinosaur eggs and a room where small animatronic dinos are being fed and looked after.

Finally you get to visit the viewing platform, where you get a panoramic view of the prehistoric world outside, watching the giants stride and fly through their world, and the excitement continues (I won’t put any spoilers in here!)

The whole experience is fun, informative and fast paced. In fact, my only criticism is that I’d have liked to have spent more

time in each room. The guides are fantastic; full of energy and really entertaining. Each part of the tour is really well thought-out and looks great.

There are parts that some young children may find a bit scary (the experience is recommended for 5 and above), but the youngsters who at one point ran for their parents soon had their attention diverted by the next part of the visit.

For me and my budding palaeontologists, our trip back in time in Dinosaurs in the Wild was an excellent adventure.

Ghana's history at Black Cultural Archives The Black Cultural Archives’ newly acquired collection: the Adamah Papers reveals historical narratives of the Anlɔ-Eʋe people in Ghana, dating back as far as 1885.

London spoken-word artist, Yao ‘Tugg.S.T.A.R’ Togobo entrusted BCA with the responsibility of preserving the papers. BCA is the UK’s only dedicated national repository for the history and heritage of people of African descent in Britain.

The Family Ties exhibition reveals the story of a Ghanaian King Togbui Adamah II, an Anlɔ-Eʋe who ruled the Some people from 1915 until 1963. Three rooms have been transformed to present an incredibly detailed snapshot of everyday life in Ghana.

The exhibition captures the narratives displayed in traditional archives and those woven into the cloths, family legacies, oral stories and legends handed down over generations. This intimate and spiritually-powerful exhibition incorporates archive documents, textile, objects, photographs, film, oral history and uses the language of the Anlɔ-Eʋe people.

enture into the heart of the Amazon at SEA LIFE London’s most interactive experience yet.

The Rainforest Adventure, which opens at the Southbank aquarium at the end of March, boasts the UK’s largest population of Piranhas, with over 300 of the captivating, carnivorous fish, and the world’s largest species of spider.

The Amazonian adventure begins in the Rainforest Ranger’s hut, where visitors will be guided by TV adventurer Andy Torbet from BBC’s The One Show, and Coast. Andy talks to the Weekender about racing ostriches, and the wonder of nature.

“The exhibition is quite immersive and you feel like you’re in the Amazon with all the poster boy animals of the rainforest,” Andy said. “You’ve got crocodiles, piranhas, and the biggest spider in the world, which tip to tip is 30 cm. I’ve handled one -not that bigand it’s an impressive beast. They’re less scary the bigger they get because those are like mammals rather than spiders,” he said.

The underwater explorer, technical diver, skydiver, climber, kayaker and extreme adventurer said he doesn’t really get scared when he takes on these feats. “There’s animals you need to be cautious of. I’ve been stalked by polar bears, I’ve dived with sharks. You have to respect these animals but the ones I’m more wary of are the ones you can’t do a great deal about. Like the very small animals, which you’ll see in the Rainforest Adventure. The Assassin bug stabs its prey and to humans it can transmit Chagas disease. Mosquitoes are more dangerous than sharks because they carry malaria.”

“I’ve been free diving with basking sharks in the UK; they’re more intimidated by us than we are of them.

As part of the aquarium’s new display, there’s a glass dome people can put their head into with a 360 degree virtual reality camera. “Your head is inside the display and you have cockroaches and tarantulas crawling over you,” Andy said.

The video footage for the experience wasn’t filmed as far afield as visitors might expect. The Amazon rainforest was recreated on a green screen in Southwark. “I’d love to say we went trekking through the jungle but it was all shot on a green screen in a studio

in Camberwell,” Andy said.

The adventurer also has a new television series, Beyond Bionic, currently available on BBC iPlayer.

“We just finished filming last week; the idea is to show how exceptional nature is,” Andy said. “We take the top superheroes of nature, and put me against them to show how amazing they are. Using physics, and technology, we test how much technology a human needs to harness to come close to these animals.”

As part of the BBC series Andy raced an ostrich (the fastest creature on two legs) while he was wearing a jetpack; even with technology on his

side he couldn’t beat the bird that runs at 44 miles an hour. “The volcano is 650 degrees Celsius, it harnesses a layer of mucus over its skin which allows bacteria to grow and it becomes an insulator.”

Andy describes himself as a control

freak more than an adrenaline junkie.

“I’m not particularly brave,” he said.

“With wild life there’s always that element of the unknown, but the more we can learn about behaviour, you develop an appreciation of how amazing they are.”

Children will receive a special comic book to guide them through the adventure, before getting to the Superhero HQ to take part in some games, such as changing capes to hide from predators, floating like a butterfly and catching insects in your own web.

Decadent lunch for two at Jalsha

T

here is something quite decadent about having a blow out lunch on a Tuesday, because the rest of the afternoon is spent horizontal, with your lips tingling from the spices, and thinking about dipping naan bread into thick, flavoursome sauces until you drift off to sleep.

Mum and I visited Jalsha and were immediately blown away by its size and grandeur when we entered. ‘Oooh,’ said Mum. ‘It’s very nice, innit?’ And it was; very

much so. We could tell just by looking. At the plush decor and attention to detail. ‘I bet their onion bhajis are good,’ she added.

We sat down and supped on Indian lager as we worked our way through an extensive menu, aided by one of the directors, Tahir, who was on hand to guide and advise. Before long our table was full with Jalsha Chilli Chingri, Mixed Hors D’Oeuvres and Onion Bhajis. It was a splendid selection that showed off the chef’s skills and provided a variety of different tastes and textures. The prawn

chingri was especially nice, with a sauce that threw out a whole range of exotic aromas. You know it’s a waste of time asking how it’s cooked as every chef keeps their recipes very secret, but it is one I might Google and try myself at home.

In the interim period between courses we chatted with the boss about Indian wines, Indian chefs and the huge parking space out the back that all the customers use.

After a decent interval the main course arrived. We shared a King Prawn Jalfrezi, Garlic Lamb Curry,

a Naan, Pilau Rice and Saag Bhaji, and each curry was unique in look and flavour. The sauce with the prawns was amazing, as was the sauce with the lamb. The prawns were huge and the lamb was pullapart tender.

All in all it was a pretty incredible meal, and one, I reiterate, that was quite profligate for a midweek afternoon. But we were very pleased to have been so unprincipled as we both left there with smiles on our faces, food in our bellies, and plans to return to do it all again.
