Gone Grapes

You can discover lost or much underrated varieties of grapes at a special wine tasting in Greenwich on 29 March. Forget your trendy Rioja or your smooth Malbec, the Theatre of Wine is resurrecting some more unusual varieties of libation to open your mind to the larger world of wine. Sample wines from a geographically diverse area, with an exploration of grape varieties that were very nearly lost altogether, or have languished in obscurity for too long. Eltham library's Storey

E

ltham Library has become a real hub for the local community.

And that’s in no small part down to the team of dedicated professionals whose passionate approach to local inclusion has driven the centre’s narrative over the last few years, writes Nicky Sweetland...

Deputy Manager Miriam Storey kindly took some time off from her busy schedule to meet me at the plush Eltham Centre for a coffee and told me about another exciting year ahead for the library and consequentially for the residents of the local community.

Miriam – who studied English Literature at University - has worked at Eltham Library for eight years.

And it’s a job that has perfectly married her interests in both books and community work. After Miriam finished her studies, she worked extensively as a youth and

I love that I get to work in the community" community worker in a vocation, which she describes as being quite “intense”.

“I liked working with young people and I liked working in the community,” Miriam tells me with an abundance of enthusiasm and admits that getting a job working in a community library, “Worked out really well. Having that youth work and community training has helped a lot.”

It’s worked out well for the residents of the area too, with Miriam and her fellow workers’ passionate approach to serving the community, definitely paying dividends.

Miriam enthused: “A good library reflects the needs of the community that it serves, so we try to be very much about looking and

listening to what the community is asking us to do. We are lucky to be part of the Eltham Centre, which is a bit of a hub with combined services; people can come and spend a morning here, a day here if they want to. But certainly we are always looking at ways to engage with the community - like with Eltham Arts and Eltham Read because that makes it relevant and we are always looking at ways to be relevant to the people that we serve.”

It’s going to be another busy year for the team too, with a plethora of exciting new projects in the

pipeline.

Miriam told me: “We’ve been working with the Discover Story Centre, which is based in Stratford.

For the last three months they have been coming over to do performances for nought to threeyear-olds in the library. That’s part of a bigger bid for a literary soft play installation, which will be coming later this year, so we’re really excited about that, as are our under fives’ parents.”

And the library is also working closely in conjunction with Eltham Arts as Miriam will lead part of their yearlong multimedia Wall Project.

“I’m looking at doing a project based around the Secret Garden in how nature can remove barriers to creativity. Sometimes getting people to do something with art or culture can frighten them a bit, so if you do it within the context of nature, by going for a walk outside, or doing things like planting demonstrations, it can remove some of those barriers.”

As usual World Book Day at the library promises to be a special time, with lots of local schools signed up for events in the week leading up to 1st March and “A busy week of dressing up” Miriam laughs and tells me.

But getting a diverse range of ages involved in the library is what’s it’s all about and the juxtaposition of old and new is wonderfully reflected in the historic building itself.

“It’s a lovely mix. When you look at old pictures of Eltham High Street, the front of the library hasn’t changed. It’s exactly the same as it was in 1906 when it opened and it’s that consistency of being rooted in a community for

that long but still providing relevant services that has made it really stood the test of time.”

Miriam said: “It’s an essential service for people who want to access information, who want to access books, who want a place to study. Increasingly things are going online and there are online forms.

If you’re not computer literate we offer free computer courses; we offer free access to the online forms and help people with that.

In a world that can be increasingly confusing for people who need that assistance, that’s an essential service.”

And in the hands of a team, whose passion and dedication shines through at every turn, the future looks prosperous for Eltham Library and all of those in the community who use it’s invaluable services.

Miriam said: “I love the fact that every day is different. I love that I get to work in the community. I love the fact that there’s an element of creativity to it and you’ve always got to think about the next thing you’re doing. It’s a privilege.”

ncouraging patrons to part with their hard earned cash in the name of entertainment has become a real challenge for local theatre groups over the last few years. With on

demand home entertainment taking top-spot for most as the preferred evening filler, convincing audiences that live theatre is a much better option has become increasingly difficult.

Imagine then, putting on a show, which is multi-award winning, with a cast of local stars, but with a title that would put off even the most ardent ‘amdram’ follower.

But that is the hurdle, which Bromley players have

faced. Despite being one of the most respected theatre companies in the area, with a plethora of sold-out and celebrated shows under their belts, their latest show hasn’t been the easiest sell. Why, you may ask? Well, any show with a bodily fluid in the title is almost sure to turn people off and that is undoubtedly the case with Urinetown.

The musical - which after tryouts on the New York fringe, was performed on Broadway in 2001 – is a satirical black comedy.

It parodies many of the more famous blockbusters like Les Misérables and The Threepenny Opera, while maintaining a moral undertone that will leave you thinking about modern society and its materialistic nature.

And it was a big hit on the Great White Way garnering 10 Tony Award nominations and winning three.

Innovative director Jamie Lloyd picked it up in 2014 and added some gore to the proceedings when he premiered the musical at the St. James Theatre, before it enjoyed a short West End run.

So, what has this badly titled musical got to offer? Well, quite apart from its hilarious book and outstanding score, it has an

intricate, if not, at times, ludicrous story, which will make you question your own actions. But it’s also extremely entertaining. The ensemble of weird and wonderful characters will warm your hearts and have you rolling in the isles.

The story is set in a dystopian world where water has run out and you have to “pay to pee.”

The money grabbing commercial moguls have taken over and it’s a leg crossing experience for many of the less well off residence.

Director Daniel Lawrence has the pleasure of bringing the exciting and thought-provoking piece to the stage at the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham and told me, “I’m blessed with the company I’ve got to work with.

The hardest thing about it is trying to sell it because of the title. If you know the show, the title is perfect, but from a publicity point of view, it’s not your friend.”

And if their last offering is anything to go by – the excellent Made in Dagenham, which many people thought was of West End standard – local audiences are in for a real treat.

T

he SE9 Container Gallery is showcasing work from a troika of exciting artists over the next few months. Artist in residence, Kikis Leventis is curating a diverse exhibition, which features three young artists, Hassan Vawda, Italia Nappo and Megan Martin as well as showcasing some of his own compositions from his varied career.

Kikis started at the gallery in September and has already had a big impact on the unusual premises, which is the only art gallery in London to be housed within a shipping container.

The container - which rests at the St. Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive School in Eltham is bijou, but once you’re inside the displays will make you forget you are within a big chunk of steel and will instead allow you a tranquil environment in which to enjoy some fantastic pieces of art.

Kikis Leventis who is a former art teacher from Leyton- told me, “This is the artist in residence exhibition so it was up to me what I wanted to do.”

And the myriad of exception work he has gathered is a visual feast.

“It’s come together in the last few weeks it’s really worked out.” Kikis explained, “Italia is a graphic designer who likes illustration, Hassan is into painting, Megan is into small decorative art and personal art and my stuff is a bit of everything really.”

What Kikis described as his “new stuff”, which has a very comic book feel to it, particularly spoke to me.

He tells me that comics were what first inspired him to become an artist and so his work has, in some ways, come full circle.

“It’s all connected by comic as well, because that’s where I came from and that’s why I do what I do.”

In fact, his new pieces were all inspired by authors, with two actually based on the original script of the George Lucas film, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

And there is a wall filled with faces; portraits of the teachers of the neighbouring school.

The three guests artists’ work add a very different feel to the exhibition, but there is a shared theme of portraiture running throughout.

e seem to breed talent in Greenwich.

From the days of Bob Hope and Frankie Howerd, this area of London has been a hub for those with creative hearts.

And the legacy is set to continue. With the local theatre scene more vibrant than it’s ever been, an abundance of young artists will be encouraged to follow their dreams.

But this year you will be able to see two more established Greenwich alumni on the big screen when Jude Law joins the all-star cast of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Dominic Cooper heads back to the Greek island of Kalokairi for MAMMA MIA: Here We Go Again.

Both stars were born and brought up in this area and took part in local productions, with Jude Law making his stage debut at the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham.

Jude Law will play Albus Dumbledore in J.K. Rowling’s latest film, which is set for release in November. It follows the fortunes of legendary wizard Dumbledore, who enlists the help of his former student Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to bring the notorious evil wizard Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) to justice. The is the second installment in the series - a set of prequels to the Harry Potter stories - and follows the huge success of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Dominic Cooper – who was born and brought up in Greenwich – will return to the role of Sky in the second MAMMA MIA! movie (MAMMA MIA! Here we Go Again). The sequel to the smash hit 2008 musical film will be released in July and will once again feature a plethora of

The shape of water Hollywood stars as well as the pop superstar Cher. And if the first film is anything to go by, our local cinemas will be filled with ABBA fans singing along to the classic standards, as this time

around there will be even more of the Swedish super group’s hits included.

They follow closely in the footsteps of another local film star, Sally Hawkins (from

Blackheath), who narrowly missed out on the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in the highly acclaimed The Shape of Water, which is currently being screened at our local

cinemas.

Going Green at Arthur Hooper's

A cosy little place with good value cuisine

I

'll be up front: vegan cuisine isn't my cup of tea (after all, I prefer mine with milk). However, after hearing top Borough eatery Arthur Hooper's had launched a new dedicated menu I decided it was time to give in and embrace the green shoots of change, writes Joey Millar...

Overlooking Borough Market, Arthur Hooper's is still in its salad days having opened only last year. However the experienced staff and chefs at the restaurant are anything but green and have put together a new vegan menu – alongside their usual, varied offerings – using products often sourced just across the road.

That is apt: after all, the restaurant's namesake Arthur Hooper was a fruit-seller in Borough Market back in the Victorian Era. Rest assured, however, that these days Arthur Hooper (the restaurant, not the man – he's long gone, despite all that fruit and veg) serves up a very modern mix of European cuisine, from tapas style dishes to hearty set menus (two courses for £15, three for £18). As well as all this, the restaurant has also opened a new private dining rooms for parties and groups, suitably named the 'Fruit & Veg' room.

As I walked through Borough Market, where traders were slowly becoming outnumbered by revellers, it was impossible not to think of how it must have looked during Arthur's time. So much had changed (after all, he lived in a bizarre period in which Millwall had yet to evolve into Lions and were still nicknamed Rovers) but a lot, I thought as I accidentally brought my foot down into a puddle of greyish water dumped in front of a fishfood stall, would still be familiar to him even today.

At this point I could describe for you each dish in detail (that's probably what my editor wants, too, but they have long since accepted most of my word count will be taken up with historical rambling) but what good would that really do?

Sure, I could say the samphire and almond salad was the perfectly fresh opening dish, or I could describe the frigiteeli peppers as being big and tasty enough to pass for a meal all in itself. I could say the sauteed new potatoes literally make me exclaim with joy as they were brought over while the crispy artichokes instead resulted in a satisfied silence.

But with so many establishments, seemingly serving the same thing, how do you choose which one to go to? Well, if you’re anything like me, rather than selecting one, you’ll gradually eat your way around them all, writes Nicky Sweetland

And my latest foray into the world of exotic fodder was with a trip to Ziyafet. The tiny establishment on Eltham High Street serves a mixture of Mediterranean, European, Turkish and middle eastern dishes and is a cosy little place to stop off for a light bite.

I popped along on a Saturday lunchtime, when the town centre was buzzing with people getting their weekly shopping, but I was able to detach myself from the hurly burly as soon as I crossed the threshold of the bijou restaurant.

It was filled with families enjoying a weekend treat and couples sharing intimate lunches, but what was also great, was the fact that I wasn’t the only person dining alone (again!). In fact, there were a few single diners and the atmosphere was so chilled that I didn’t get that awkwardness you sometimes feel when you’re eating on your own.

With a subtle soundtrack of Mediterranean-style music playing in the background I sampled some of the choices from the special two-

course lunchtime set menu, which at just £7.50 is a steal.

I started with toasted pitta and hummus, which was creamy, tangy and satisfying and washed it down with a glass of crisp dry white wine (a very classy Pinot Grigio). I chose to have chicken shish served with couscous for my main meal and the mouthwatering chunks of succulent chicken were truly delightful. I might hasten to add that the addition of chili sauce blew my socks off, such was the intense heat, but luckily I hadn’t guzzled my wine too quickly, so I was able to put out the fire in my mouth.

It was by no means haute cuisine, but then what do you expect for £7.50? What you can guarantee from a meal at Ziyafet is a good value, well prepared meal in welcoming and comfortable surroundings.

P U BL I C N OT I C ES ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) COLDHARBOUR ESTATE PLANNED TEMPORARY RESTRICTION / ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) The Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, being the traffic authority for the streets and lengths of streets specified in Schedule 1 to this Order and being satisfied that traffic should be restricted therein because of the Water mains replacement (hereinafter referred to as “the said works”) are to be executed on or near to those streets or lengths of streets, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984(a), and of all other powers thereunto enabling, hereby makes the following Order: 1. This Order may be cited as the Royal Borough of Greenwich (Temporary Restriction of Traffic to facilitate Thames Water to renew the water mains to reduce the amount of water leaks in the effected roads) Order 2018 and shall come into force on the 11-04-2018. The Council is satisfied that, in order to facilitate the execution of the said works, it is necessary for the Order to continue in force for 18 months, However the works are expected to take 10 Months. The duration of the works can be extended with approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

2. (1) In this Order, “enactment” means any enactment, whether public general or local and includes any order, byelaw, rule, regulation, scheme or other instrument having effect by virtue of an enactment.

(2) Any reference in this Order to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended, applied, consolidated, re-enacted by or as having effect by virtue of any subsequent enactment.

3. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to enter or proceed in any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 to this Order.

4. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to wait (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 to this Order.

5. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit a vehicle to proceed in any street or length of street specified in column (1) of Schedule 2 to this Order in a direction other than that specified in relation thereto in column (2) of that Schedule.

6. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle proceeding in a street or length of street specified in column (1) of Schedule 3 to this Order to make any turning movement at its junction with the street specified in relation thereto in column (2) of that Schedule.

7. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle proceeding in a street or length of street specified in column (2) of Schedule 3 to this Order to make any turning movement at its junction with the street specified in relation thereto in column (1) of that Schedule.

8. Whilst this Order continues in force and without prejudice to anything done or to any liability incurred in respect of any act or omission before the coming into force of this Order, and subject to Article 9 of this Order, the provisions of any Order that designated parking places in any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 & 2 to this Order, are hereby suspended insofar as those provisions designated those parking places.

9. The provisions of Articles 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of this Order shall apply only at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing of the appropriate traffic signs prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016(b).

10. Nothing in Article 3 shall apply in relation to any person causing any vehicle to enter any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 to this Order for the purpose of gaining access to premises fronting upon that length of road or accessible only therefrom, provided that the extent of the said works makes this possible.

11. Nothing in Article 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 of this Order shall apply in relation to: (a) Any vehicle being used in the execution of the said works; (b) Any vehicle being used in connection with the removal of any obstruction to traffic or any obstruction to the said works; (c) any vehicle being used for ambulance, fire brigade or police purposes, provided that the extent of the said works makes this possible; or (d) Anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a traffic warden.
