SPRING CLEAR

Creating a fresh space

T

he Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers (APDO) has launched a modern alternative to spring cleaning.

Spring Clearing Week takes place 24-30 March and is designed to help you focus on creating a positive environment for the rest of the year. The campaign empowers you to let go of your clutter and create more physical and mental space to do the things you love. APDO professional organisers Katherine Blackler (SortMySpace Ltd), Chloë Howat (Declutter with Chloë) and Sally Walford (Declutter Me) will be on hand from 10am5pm on Friday 30 March at pop-up charity shop and community space Bermondsey Uprising on Southwark Park Road to give personal advice on the clutter zones in your home or workplace. They are encouraging you to identify at least 3 things you no longer need that you could donate to Bermondsey Uprising in return for their free expert advice. Feel free to bring along photos of your space to

chat through and see how you could create more space this spring. At 2pm, author and declutterer Sally Walford (Declutter Me) will entertaining us with a reading of her children's book The Clutter Monster as well as an exclusive preview of her newest story, Mrs Jumble. Bring the kids along and sit comfortably!" Check out communityopportunity.org for latest news.

The experts have pulled together their top tips for Spring Clearing Week success: • Getting started is often the hardest part of decluttering. Take little steps if giant leaps are unrealistic. But definitely start. • Focus on just one space at a time. Choose a room, or even a drawer, and don’t get distracted by other areas. You will get to them. • Allocate dedicated time to sort through your things so you can focus on the task at hand. And try to eliminate distractions. • Declutter before buying any more storage so you can see what you really need. We often have more storage than we think.

• Take ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos. You’ll be inspired by how far you’ve come. • Reward yourself for your achievements, both during and at the end of the process (ideally with experiences and not more ‘stuff’!). • Ask for impartial and professional help if it seems daunting or it becomes too emotional reviewing belongings with your friends and family.
