Blackheath Rugby Club are leaders of the pack in the local community I

t’s unusual to find somewhere with a buzzing atmosphere midweek. But as soon as you cross the threshold of Blackheath Rugby Club you are met with a hive of activity.

The club, on Well Hall Road, not only provides a home for the local rugby teams, but also acts as a social centre for the community and on any given evening you can wander down for a drink and be met with a warm welcome in the thriving setting, which hosts local club nights for everything from football to folk music.

Blackheath Rugby Club itself was first founded in 1858 a few years after Blackheath Propriety School had opened and made the sport popular in the area. And Blackheath Rugby Club went on to become one of the first great Rugby Football clubs, helping to establish the Rugby Union and even influencing some of the rules of the game. In fact, Richmond RFC and Blackheath FC both claim to have played the first ever rugby inter-club fixture in 1864.

And they have played each other every year since then.

"The atmosphere is so great. We’re a family, we all look after each other” Now, the club hones the talents of all ages of players from youngsters up to veterans, while their first team - which transferred to play at the Well Hall ground in 2016 - continues to play a very high standard of the game.

But it’s not just about Rugby at the state of the art facilities in Eltham and the one thing you can feel as soon as you’re within the boundaries is the sense of community.

Bar manager Leanne Stewart who lives just up the road – told us, “I started off just doing match days but now I live here basically. I’m here all the time. The atmosphere is so great. We’re a family, we all look after each other.”

The club provides a hub for sporting clubs from around the area including the Millwall Academy, who use the facilities to host their promising young footballers.

affair too, with spectators travelling from all over the country to see their team pitted against the best we have to offer and the first team attracts an average crowd of over 700 supporters.

Born and bred in Eltham, Lisa Slater has worked at the club for

Blackheath Football Club, 1930-31 the last five months and can often be seen behind the popular outside bar during the big games. Lisa said, “This job is completely different.

It’s a laugh and a joke. Every week there’s something happening and it makes it enjoyable to come to work.”

hurchill Theatre is hosting the Kent premiere of the stage version of ‘70s classic TV comedy Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em.

The most successful sitcom of the decade followed hapless Frank and his long-suffering wife Betty with catch phrases galore and a never-ending list of disasters including rollerskating escapades and runaway chickens.

This production stars Kent local Joe Pasquale as the loveable accident-prone Frank Spencer, Sarah Earnshaw as his wife Betty, and Susie Blake as his disapproving Mother-in-Law, Mrs Fisher.

Joe first burst onto television screens in New Faces and went on to win I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and host The Price is Right.

“We have a stunt coordinator and I’m doing it all – hanging by my ankles, chicken chasing and all sorts,” Joe said. “But we’re not doing it as Michael’s version of Frank Spencer; that would be an insult to Michael. I’m putting my personality into it, which is how to make it believable. There’s a difference between child-like and childish and Frank isn’t childish; he believes in what he’s doing.”

“It’s still set in the ‘70s, so you get the mustard wallpaper, tank tops and all the trimmings. It is so funny and you can take the whole family to see it.”

Joe admits he is something of an adrenalin junkie (as well as slumming it on – and winning – I’m a Celebrity fourteen years ago, Joe has also appeared in TV documentaries where he was trained by the SAS and imprisoned in Costa Rica). “If it’s not dangerous or life threatening then I’m not interested anymore,” he said. “I read the book Feel the Fear and do it Anyway fifteen years ago and it made me think.

Now, if I’m not sure about doing something, I automatically say OK; let’s do it. You might as well live while you can.”

The mother of all sitcoms in Bromley Arthur in the Monty Python musical comedy Spamalot in the West End a couple of years ago. Stuck in an airless dressing room at the height of summer, wearing chainmail and kingly robes, a broken fan was about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Setting about taking it to pieces, cleaning it and putting it back together again (“I was sweating my knackers off”), when he turned the power back on the fan exploded. The show’s director Christopher Luscombe and staff director Guy Unsworth were present and both roared with laughter, calling it a pure Frank Spencer moment. A seed was sown and Guy sought out Raymond Allen: the writer of the original TV series. It transpired that Allen was a big fan of Joe’s and Unsworth set about writing a script. Now, two years, several script edits and three workshops later, the show is underway.

“We have been working really hard on it, Guy in particular,” says Joe. “He suggests the smallest change; a tiny nuance to get the comedy out of a line, and he’s always right. He’s also a real historian on British comedy. I think he’ll be one of the biggest directors in the West End.” Touring Some Mothers promises to be a lot easier than Joe’s stand-up show.

“I usually do 40 one-nighters at different theatres. A week in one place will be like a holiday,” he said. “I live in Kent so Bromley is close enough for me to be at home, which will be lovely. The theatre is lovely and the people there are really great too.”

“The world is a miserable place sometimes and we need to empty our bins, mentally. The only way to do that is release some laughter and you’ll laugh for two hours solidly at this, I promise.”

All-female collective wrestles with the issues

A

n all-female wrestling collective performing in Camberwell is hoping to inspire more women to get involved in the sport, writes Katherine Johnston...

After putting on their first sell-out show in Theatre Delicatessen in Burgess Park last month, Burning Hearts Fighting Entertainment competed on Sunday in front of another packed crowd.

Organiser Jane Dunn, from Greenwich, hopes the shows will become a regular fixture on the south London scene.

She told the Weekender: “The best way to describe our shows is that it is like community theatre but its wrestling and with an-all female team and crew who do it for the love of wrestling.”

The collective was set up in 2016 as a training group for women wrestlers of all experience levels. Ms Dunn explained: “We wanted an inclusive, likeminded group which was female-oriented where beginners would feel comfortable having a go. We took new women who were complete beginners and got them ready for matches and shows, and others joined

who have performed all over the world.

“Ethnically we are diverse, and in all shapes and sizes.

Maybe ten years ago there was a stereotype of how a woman wrestler should look but now there is a lot more opportunity for different types of people. We don’t all look like models, we’re just normal women but working towards something we feel helps build your confidence, to feel happy being you and express your personality.”

The training group was such a success they soon decided to put on shows of their own. Burning

Hearts’ first show was held in September 2017.

‘Heather Honeybadger’, 28, from Nunhead said: “Our shows are special because we make all the decisions as a group everything from posters down to where we train. A lot of us have been in the industry for a while, and though we love it, often it can be very male-dominated and you get little say in the way shows are run.

“We are a team that support women who are both starting out and are established, it's a really nice environment to be part of.

Ms Dunn stresses that Burning Hearts is not just for die-hard wrestling fans: “Our wrestlers are aged from seventeen to 35 and we have a huge variety from ‘Mischa East’, London’s strong girl, who lifts and throws, to smaller people with high-flying technical moves and athleticism.

“We’re aiming to be accessible, fun and entertaining and not just for people who are already into wrestling.”

The shape of water Lawyer Patrick Macrory remembers a key point in his life was in 2008 in Ashland, Oregon, as he watched his grandchildren playing in a water fountain, writes Michael Holland....

He did what many of us would do – he reached for his camera. Then came the moment of exploration – what would happen if he ignored the children and just took the water?

This is where Patrick’s visual voyage began. Using faster and faster shutter speeds, different fountains and hose pipes, Patrick

has collected images that the human eye cannot see but the camera can.

Not content with just that, he uses digital ways and means of developing and extending the images; sometimes in random and unrepeatable ways, sometimes with colours and cropping. But whatever he selects and puts on show he enables the viewer to study unique images that all begin with water.

Then, not content with just the images Patrick has extended the viewer’s appreciation and understanding of the unseen by

introducing, in parallel, selected poetic word.

In his exhibition, Liquid Poetry – the Wonder of Water, he has synthesised a depth of nature’s vision with a depth of human literary form.

Dean Stanbury, aka Stana, is a father of three living in South London. Eleven years ago he was an East London, bad-boy gangster starting out his rap career with lyrics that were designed to shock.

One fateful day in 2006 while running away from the police, he fired over his shoulder and wounded an officer. Stanbury did eight years in jail, coming out a changed man, and now wants to track down the officer he shot and express his remorse, check he is okay and apologise to him face to

face for what he did.

Will Dean be able to find him after all these years? What will the policeman say, how will he react?

In the process he revisits his past to work out how he became the man capable of pulling the trigger that day.

Dean Stanbury is now writing new lyrics that reflect his new values and will hopefully discourage young men like he once was from glamourising guns, crime and life on the street.

what makes this film stand out is that it is a tale of Restorative Justice told from the inside, by the people who have lived in that life, as opposed to TV people pitching up and looking in on this world.

The director, Nicole Stanbury, had done two stretches in prison for gang-related offences before finding her way back to the straight and narrow. Because she is a close relative of Stanbury and has his full trust, the film is astonishingly intimate.

Sorry I Shot You is an extraordinary, uplifting

documentary about redemption and second chances gratefully seized. Its protagonist is unusually honest and open, making this a very revealing and insightful film.

Sorry I Shot You is the first commission for Southwarkbased Underworld TV, a new independent TV production company bringing ex-offenders and TV talent together to tell authentic stories from the other side of the law.

mini marathon Registrations are already pouring in for Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice’s Mini Marathon on Sunday 29 April.

Now in its fourth year, the Mini Marathon is a sponsored running event for children aged between 5 and 16, and gives them the chance to run a 2.62 mile course around Royal Greenwich Park. Every child will receive a special Mini Marathon medal and a goody bag at the end of the event.

ou can almost eat your way around the world in Eltham these days, such is the renewed vibrancy of its foodie scene.

And another addition to the culinary landscape has recently opened and has already become a popular destination for those seeking a dining experience with a difference.

Chang Thai opened late last year and has brought a bit of class to the culinary scene on Well Hall Road. The proprietors already run a hugely successful Thai restaurant in Shoreditch, but saw a gap in the market in Eltham and are delighted with the response they have received from both locals and fans of their

acclaimed cuisine, who are willing to travel to the town to satisfy their need for excellent Thai gastronomy.

I chose a Sunday night to sample what the restaurant had to offer for the first time, for two reasons. The first is that on a Sunday, the hugely popular restaurant is a little quieter and secondly because it was my birthday.

And I couldn’t have received a warmer welcome. The interior is plush, yet not intimidatingly posh and the ambiance created by the staff is extremely friendly. There even have sounds of the seaside playing as a relaxing background theme, which gave us a further chilled Sunday night vibe.

Food wise, our experience

couldn’t have been better too.

After a sprinkling of prawn crackers, I chose to sample Ped Aromatic to start – a quarter shredded crispy duck (beautifully succulent), served with pancakes, cucumber strips, spring onion and hoi sin sauce, which was sticky and wonderfully satisfying.

My companions had vegetable tempura - a selection of mixed vegetables deep fried in light batter served with sweet chili sauce - which was an extremely generous serving; and Pu Nim - soft shell crabs, topped with garlic, spring onions, garlic, salted chilies, which was beautifully prepared and elegantly married the mixture of tastes.

For our mains we chose to share Pla Pow Bai Tong (deep fried sea

bass fillet wrapped in Banana Leaf and served with sour and spicy chilli dip), Beef Kang Kiew Wan (green curry with fresh chili, cocoanut milk and sweet basil) and Chicken Kang Phed (red curry with coconut milk infused with red chili) served with an assortment of different rices.

The wide variety of dishes on offer is what the restaurant pride themselves on and I can honestly say, all of the examples we tried were well prepared and extremely tasty.

We washed it all down with a bottle of wine and after a lovely chat with the owner - who told us that he is ecstatic about the reception he has received in Eltham – we sauntered on our way, vowing to return soon.
