Pragya creating Cultural Connections in Eltham

B

eing able to feel like you’re a part of your local community is very important in these modern times. Despite there being even more ways to keep in contact with family and friends through the internet and social media, there’s nothing quite like a real chat with a friend or a catch up with people who share the same interests. In fact a study by Pittsburgh University last year claimed that for many, social media could even make people feel lonelier.

But making friends when you move into a new area can be very difficult; with the busy lives we lead, particularly if the culture we are met by is different from the one we are familiar with.

Pragya Kumar moved to Eltham just over 13 years ago and told me, “To be honest, when I moved here I loved everything about it.

I’m from India and when I moved to this country I ended up straight away in Eltham.”

But there was something missing for the artistic Pragya: “When I started off, there wasn’t much in the creative side happening around here and I used to be very frustrated about that.”

After trying a few things in the Blackheath area and doing some research, Pragya - who was working as an Interior Designer in Southwark at the time - found just what she was looking for.

“I stumbled upon Eltham Arts.”

Pragya enthused, “It’s been amazing since then; we’ve done so much and it’s just fantastic.”

Pragya - who explains that she has always painted and has even exhibited work locally -quickly became part of the team and her local artistic acumen took off from there.

And after having a family made fulltime work more challenging, Pragya decided that putting a bit of art back into the community would also become part of her career. So, after undertaking a course and becoming qualified as a Teaching Assistant, Pragya jumped at the chance and put her skills as an artist into helping local schools. “I designed a few projects for the schools; thinking up a topic and coming up with art projects to go with that project.”

Pragya explained.

The projects in the local schools were such a success with the pupils, that after a visit to a

local care home Pragya decided to branch out and took on the challenge of providing art classes for the elderly.

“When we got there, they were doing this drawing session with just a couple of bits of paper and pens out and they expected the residents to draw something. I thought it was really boring for them so I decided to make things a bit more exciting.”

But that’s not where her community work finished. Last year along with some likeminded friends, Pragya created a very special community project called Cultural Connections. “We decided to come up with a group, which was about sharing cultural ideas, so either your lifestyle or your festivals, anything; art, textiles. What we usually do is meet up and share some food together; everyone cooks

something, and then we pick a topic for that meeting. It could be fabric one day or it could be art, or it could be tourism. So the idea is we are able to talk to each other about first hand information.”

The group have already hosted a ‘Taste of India’ event and recently celebrated Chinese New Year at the Maritime Museum in Greenwich. “It’s been welcomed by the community because everyone likes the idea of it.”

Pragya explains, “Until you communicate with the different communities you don’t know the similarities you have.”

And Pragya’s dogmatic approach to building links in the community were also instrumental in the launch of Eltham Arts’ most recent foray; the multimedia Wall Project.

The initiative, which is running throughout 2018 and into 2019, aims to bring people in the local

community together through art.

Pragya is leading the visual arts aspects of the project and comments, “It’s come along at a really important time in politics; we have so many walls that we are building around us, not just in the political world but socially.

In London you have so many communities that have walls between them. People aren’t as strongly bonded as they should be, living in a city like this where you can’t really do without each other.”

Intrepid quarter Step up A

n intrepid quartet is about to take to the stage at The Bob Hope Theatre to provide local audiences with a bit of madcap mirth.

The awesome foursome -who are all members of the acclaimed Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company - will take on the challenge of performing the hilarious stage parody The 39 Steps next week.

The play is based on the book by John Buchan and the famed Alfred Hitchcock movie thriller of the same name and sees the small troupe of actors attempting to fulfill all of the roles.

Set in 1935, the story follows a London gentleman called Richard Hannay, who after finding his life just a bit too mundane decides to spice it up by attending a West End show.

But after meeting the fascinating Annabella Schmidt, who is running away from some dastardly secret agents, Hannay finds himself mixed up in a thrilling chase, involving spies, the Flying Scotsman, the Forth Bridge, The London Palladium and the

mysterious 39 Steps.

The original West End production of The 39 Steps was so popular that it ran at The Criterion Theatre for 9 years, making it the fifth longest running play in West End History.

The adaptation by Richard Barlow relies on just four actors to play all of the parts, which makes the action extremely fast paced. When you add to that multiple lightning quick costumes

changes, the production promises to become an exhilarating concoction of confusion and hilarity.

But local audiences will be familiar with the level of theatrical acumen The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company posses, following the huge success of their last two productions, the mirth filled Sandcastles and the blockbuster musical comedy Spamalot.

This time around it has fallen to Paul

Marshall – who previously directed Pygmalion in 2014 for the company – to take the reigns. Paul directs the quartet, with Howard Otley (Hannay), Charlotte Davey (Annabella) and Paul Newton (Clown) all making their debuts at the Bob Hope

Theatre. And after the sell out success of Cinderella earlier this year, Jackie Mitchell (Clown) completes the cast.

Triple bill of Joss Arnott Dance at Trinity Laban T

he world-renowned Joss Arnott Dance will bring a triple bill of exhilarating compositions to Trinity Laban on 1 March. The company, which is led

by Trinity Laban alumni Joss Arnott, have become known as the most exciting voices of British contemporary dance over recent years and will perform their acclaimed programme

of new classical and contemporary dance for audiences at the renowned south east London arts establishment.

The three-part programme consists of two brand new touring dance works – A Movement in 3 and Rush – alongside the company’s internationally award-winning solo V that will feature live music for the first time.

Movement in 3 marries dreamlike chorography with

an original score for piano and violin by Quinta, while Rush centres on the modern athleticism of the female cast.

The third piece is called simply V and is a solo composition, which explores movement through technical precision, with a solo viola providing the soundtrack.

The greatest singalong

T

he Greatest Showman has made the genre of movie musicals cool again. The film, which is based on the story of P.T. Barnum has taken the world by storm over the last few months, with its soundtrack topping the charts.

And for those of you who prefer your music a little bit more interactive, you can head along to Greenwich Picturehouse for a special singalong screening on 11 March.

But where has this monster musical come from and what has made it so popular?

Well, obviously that is up for debate, but it is probably in part down to the musical theatre

pedigree of both the creative team and cast involved.

The screenplay was cowritten by Bill Condon, who has previously scored huge success with the movie musicals Dreamgirls and Chicago and most recently the live action version of Beauty and the Beast.

His cast is led by Hugh Jackman, who has appeared in a plethora of productions on Broadway and is best known to London audiences for his portrayal of Curly in the National Theatre’s production of Oklahoma! in 1998.

He has since gone on to have an envied Hollywood career, but has returned to the genre of musicals on more than one occasion, most notably taking on the

leading role in the film adaptation of the smash hit musical Les Misérables.

He’s not the only cast member who cut his teeth in musicals either. Jackman’s co-star, Michelle Williams has starred in Cabaret on Broadway, while the film’s other leading man, Zac Efron, first came to the world’s attention in the teen-film series High School Musical.

But let’s look at the music for a moment. I’m sure many of you will be aware that this is not the first time P.T. Barnum’s life has been depicted through music. In fact, you’ve got a few more days to see the classic Cy Coleman musical Barnum at The Menier Chocolate Factory. The Greatest

Showman however, is scored by a burgeoning partnership, which have the promise of becoming the next Rogers and Hammerstein.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul - or Pasek and Paul as they are known professionally – have become the go to virtuosos for movie producers over recent years, with their song “City of Stars” - which was featured in La La Land - earning them an Academy Award. And they have also had more than one dalliance with musical theatre too, with their song cycle, Edges, becoming a cult classic among stagey aficionados.

And rumour has, it that their multi-award winning Broadway stage hit Dear Evan Hanson will

be coming to London in the not too distant future. The show’s Tony Award winning star, Ben Platt recently visited the capital, leading to tongues wagging about him potentially making his West End debut in the show.

For now though, fans of the musical pairing’s work can get their fill from singing along to one of the most popular film soundtracks of the last ten years, at a special screening of The Greatest Showman at Greenwich Picturehouse. You can stretch your vocal chords and nurture your vibrato as you chirp along to Hugh Jackman and co on 11 March at 3pm. www.picturehouses.com

ho doesn’t love a full English breakfast occasionally? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for my smashed avocado and fruit smoothies, but every now and then, I need to be fulfilled by a plate filled with pure unadulterated sinful joy.

So, one Sunday morning when my need for such sustenance became overbearing, I wondered into the Café Dee in Eltham. The little establishment on Pound Place had been recommended to me, as much of the wonderfully naughty fare is grilled, so even though you are being bad, you can still

clap yourself on the back at not consuming huge levels of greasy, fried food.

That said the portion size you are served with is so big that you won’t be left wanting. My friend and I both decided to go for it and attempted to consume our combined bodyweight in delightfully wicked grilled food.

We selected the classic breakfast, which comes with two rashers of bacon, Cumberland sausage, two hashbrowns, mushrooms and baked beans. I added on a fried egg to mine and we washed it all down with builders-style cup of English breakfast tea. And the breakfast was everything I

could have wished for: fulsome, flavoursome and immensely satisfying.

What’s great about the fact that Café Dee choose to grill most of their food rather than frying it is that the inside of the café is absolutely immaculate. Well decorated and well kept, none of that greasy, smelly interior, which you so often find when you venture into a traditional British café. And the staff are a really great bunch too; attentive and caring.

So, if like me, you want to stuff your face full of cooked breakfast every now and then, Café Dee in Eltham is a real recommendation.

P UB LIC NOT IC ES ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) Dumbreck Road to Mottingham Service Road PLANNED TEMPORARY RESTRICTION / ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) The Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, being the traffic authority for the streets and lengths of streets specified in Schedule 1 to this Order and being satisfied that traffic should be restricted therein because of the new cable route programme from Falconwoods to Sydenham (hereinafter referred to as “the said works”) are to be executed on or near to those streets or lengths of streets, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984(a), and of all other powers thereunto enabling, hereby makes the following Order: 1. This Order may be cited as the Royal Borough of Greenwich (Temporary Restriction of Traffic to facilitate UK Power Networks for a new major cable route programme) Order 2018 and shall come into force on the 5th March 2018. The Council is satisfied that, in order to facilitate the execution of the said works, it is necessary for the Order to continue in force for 18 months, However the works are expected to take 12 Months. The duration of the works can be extended with approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

2. (1) In this Order, “enactment” means any enactment, whether public general or local and includes any order, byelaw, rule, regulation, scheme or other instrument having effect by virtue of an enactment.

(2) Any reference in this Order to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended, applied, consolidated, re-enacted by or as having effect by virtue of any subsequent enactment.

3. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to enter or proceed in any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 to this Order.

4. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to wait (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 to this Order.

5. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit a vehicle to proceed in any street or length of street specified in column (1) of Schedule 2 to this Order in a direction other than that specified in relation thereto in column (2) of that Schedule.

6. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle proceeding in a street or length of street specified in column (1) of Schedule 3 to this Order to make any turning movement at its junction with the street specified in relation thereto in column (2) of that Schedule.

7. Subject to Article 9 of this Order, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle proceeding in a street or length of street specified in column (2) of Schedule 3 to this Order to make any turning movement at its junction with the street specified in relation thereto in column (1) of that Schedule.

8. Whilst this Order continues in force and without prejudice to anything done or to any liability incurred in respect of any act or omission before the coming into force of this Order, and subject to Article 9 of this Order, the provisions of any Order that designated parking places in any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 & 2 to this Order, are hereby suspended insofar as those provisions designated those parking places.

9. The provisions of Articles 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of this Order shall apply only at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing of the appropriate traffic signs prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016(b).

10. Nothing in Article 3 shall apply in relation to any person causing any vehicle to enter any street or length of street specified in Schedule 1 to this Order for the purpose of gaining access to premises fronting upon that length of road or accessible only therefrom, provided that the extent of the said works makes this possible.

11. Nothing in Article 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 of this Order shall apply in relation to: (a) Any vehicle being used in the execution of the said works; (b) Any vehicle being used in connection with the removal of any obstruction to traffic or any obstruction to the said works; (c) any vehicle being used for ambulance, fire brigade or police purposes, provided that the extent of the said works makes this possible; or (d) Anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a traffic warden.
