The Royal Astronomy Museum is hosting a star-studded Valentine’s Evening. As part of the romantic themed planetarium show, there’s a chance to look at the moon through the 18-tonne Victorian telescope, and meander in the Meridian courtyard with a glass of bubbles, standing on the Prime Meridian of the world.

A chance to visit the Observatory after hours, and chat to astronomers about anything from the life cycles of stars, to the collisions between galaxies.

Romantic stargazing sessions include glasses of bubbly, and a classic red rose for each couple attending.

The Flippin’ Good Fun Pancake Race is set to get heated in Greenwich Market with a pre-Lent event on Saturday 10 February, and a race on Shrove Tuesday itself (13 February).

There are medals to be won and plenty of pancakes up for grabs from the traders at Greenwich Market. You can turn up on the day and enter the race as a team or on your own. Pancakes and pans are provided.

Eltham's champion of the arts

H

ow do you become a champion for the arts?

Well, you could start by asking Gaynor Wingham, the local advocate who conceived Eltham Arts and who has helped to make the town a hub for community groups and artists over the past few years.

Born and bred in Eltham, Gaynor has lived in Greenholm Road for over 30 years and spent much of her working life as a social worker in and around Greenwich.

And Gaynor told me her interest in art has been fostered over the years “I was always interested in art. I’d go to concerts and art galleries and theatres; heritage buildings, I’ve always been interested in the history of the area. In fact I’ve got a published book about the history of Greenholm Road called A Hundred years of a London Street. I researched that for the millennium.”

In 2012 Gaynor – who had become well known for her work in the local community - was approached by Eltham Town Centre Partnership. The organisation was looking into launching a local art and culture project and Gaynor had an idea about what they could do: “I said I’d set up a poetry competition.”

The event was called Eltham in Verse and it was a resounding success, with an abundance of local groups and schools all getting involved. Gaynor explained, “We opened it up as a free competition and had some book tokens as prizes. We had a really, really good response and we had lots of poems all about Eltham.”

In fact the competition was so popular that Gaynor decided to publish a book of the poems. “It was just incredibly successful and it made me appreciate and realise what fantastic local community groups we’ve got around here, that people were interested in the arts and that people did like to get involved.”

But it didn’t end there, “People started asking what we were doing for the next year and I decided that there was clearly a need for this.”

Gaynor explained, “I thought about it and thought about it and decided to set up Eltham Arts.”

The organisation was established

with a committee and constitution in August 2013 and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

And almost five years on, Eltham Arts is still fulfilling it’s mission statement of ‘Connecting the community through the arts”.

Part of their success comes from Gaynor’s social media expertise: “I tried to get some of the smaller groups to set up social media accounts, so that we could all help each other.”

The bringing together of local groups and artists has ensured the continued success of Eltham Arts.

They were instrumental in bringing music to Passey Place and have subsequently organised the hugely popular festival of summer music in the town centre.

“Last year we had three whole Saturdays; 23 acts, 250 people involved. It’s become the Eltham Music Festival and last year in July was Eltham Music month.” Gaynor enthuses and her obvious passion for the local arts community is infectious.

For 2018, Eltham Arts have launched a very different project in the hope that it will engage with even more local people.

They are hosting the Wall project, a multimedia festival, which incorporates a whole host of different events and mediums.

There will be a creative writing competition, a mural, a songwriting project and the screening of a film at the Bob Hope Theatre.

The film - entitled The Acting Class - is about Tom Stocks, who sets up a campaign to highlight socioeconomic exclusion in the arts, an issue very close to Gaynor’s heart after her career in social work, “I think that gave me a good background for doing things with Eltham Arts. I’m very keen on it being a very inclusive organisation.”

It’s going to be another busy year for Gaynor and Eltham Arts and the thriving scene is one she should be very proud of.

The Acting Class will be shown at The Bob Hope Theatre on 21st Feb 2018 at 7.30pm and will be followed by a Q & A with the Directors.

BC’s Antique Roadshow is coming to Eltham Palace this summer.

The BBC One programme is filming at the grounds of the English Heritage art deco palace for its 41st series, on Sunday 10 June.

Fiona Bruce and the team of Antiques Roadshow experts are calling on locals to dust off their family heirlooms, raid their attics, and dig out their car boot bargains to bring along for free advice and valuations.

Last year, the programme celebrated four decades on the road with some amazing finds, including the most valuable Faberge ever seen on the programme, and a correction to Darwin’s theory of evolution by the great man himself.

Chris Small, English Heritage’s Property Manager at Eltham Palace, said: “We are thrilled to be welcoming the Antiques Roadshow to Eltham Palace this summer and I can’t wait to see what hidden treasures visitors will bring along on the day.”

The moated medieval Eltham Palace was once the childhood home of Henry VIII. The property was transformed into a showpiece of Art Deco design and cutting-edge technology back in the 1930s by its

glamorous millionaire owners Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. The property is now in the care of English Heritage and boasts 19 acres of beautiful gardens.

It’s a stunning backdrop for a Sunday show and we’d love to see cherished objects and hear personal stories from the people of south-east London and beyond.”

Build it, and they will come Architectural historian and author Dan Cruickshank is the latest Talking Head in a Greenwich Theatre’s series.

The 68-year-old has been a regular on BBC television as presenter of architectural programmes like One Foot in the Past and The House of Detectives.

Through the lens of architecture, Dan is discussing art, culture, science, and engineering, and examining how they all intertwine.

“Architecture helps people define their sense of themselves, and that’s why historic sites like Stonehenge and Pompei are incredibly popular,” Dan said. “They reveal how important art is to people, firing our imagination and sense of romance.”

The talk also focuses on Dan’s new book A History of Architecture in 100 Buildings.

Remains of the Kay A

ward-winning comedian Adam Kay is chopping and changing his line-up with two very different shows at Greenwich Theatre. His NHS junior doctor memoir This is Going to Hurt is currently making waves, and now he’s bringing it to life onstage.

His other show The Remains of Tom Lehrer follows his obsession with the satirical singer-songwriter.

The Chiswick-based writer and comedian says he’s been obsessed with Tom Lehrer “since childbirth.”

“For as long as I can remember, my parents subjected me to his music and I could sing the Masochism Tango before I knew what masochism meant,” he said.

He’s 89 now. What message would you send to him on his 90th birthday (does he know about your show?)

My message would be: Please don’t die before 10th February because that would really kill the vibe of my show. I’ve invited him along but I’m unsure how likely a nonagenarian is to make a daytrip from California to Greenwich.

How did the two different shows develop almost side by side?

Both shows have been a long time in the making. I’ve spent the best part of a decade gently updating Tom Lehrer’s songs to make them accessible to a brand new audience hitherto unaware of his genius (I’d like to think of it as a loving restoration of a classic car rather than when they remade Alfie with Jude Law in it). This is Going to Hurt is based on the diaries I kept as a junior doctor working in obs and gynae. I decided to start reading these diaries out loud a couple of years ago when junior doctors were coming under fire from the government. I took both shows up to the Edinburgh Festival the same year as both topics were – for very different reasons – extremely close to my heart.

A lot of people see the NHS as the most important factor in life in the UK. You obviously have insights that we can hardly imagine. Can you reflect on them for us and link them to your show?

The NHS is certainly the greatest national asset. We were all born in the NHS and one day the NHS will zip us all up in a bag, but not until they’ve done everything possible to keep us going. Sadly its very existence is currently under threat from fork-tongued, privately insured politicians. The service is currently stretched to breaking point and I could write tens of thousands of words on the matter. In fact, I have – in my multi-award-winning Sunday Times Bestseller This is Going to Hurt. Neither the book nor the show are overtly political though.

They just present the truth of what it means to be a junior doctor on the frontline of the NHS: the ups, the downs, the ninety-seven hour weeks, the constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the impact the job has on your personal life. But I think it’s impossible to leave the show or close the book and agree with the current administration’s assertion that junior doctors went on strike because they were greedy.

Do you know Greenwich Theatre well?

I know Greenwich Theatre extremely well having first been there on school trips from Dulwich College. I leapt at the chance when my producer let me know that the theatre were interested in these shows – I just hope I won’t lower the tone of the place irreparably.

James Haddrell said that one of the things he likes about you is that you don’t always have to be funny and end every conversation with a punchline. Can you expand on that?

The nature of life as a junior doctor – and hence my show and book – is that whilst a lot of what happens is funny a lot of it is also rather sad. Sadly, it wouldn’t be a true representation of medicine if every single story ended with a punchline.

Although there are still a lot of stories about objects in orifices, don’t worry.

Caveman hunt Eltham Palace is travelling back to the Bronze Age with a special Early Man trail, celebrating the release of the new Aardman Animations film.

Visitors to Eltham Palace from Sunday to Friday, February 11 and 16, and Sunday, February 18, can search for the tribe, following clues to complete a quest to uncover centuries of history in a day. GROW TO THE THEATRE The Enormous Turnip is just one of the offerings for families this half term at Greenwich Theatre.

They play tells the story of Rosie, a youngster who wants to carve a lantern from a turnip for a special light festival. But she has to start from scratch, planting the seed and waiting for it to grow. When harvest time comes, she enlists the help of cow, goat, fox and duck, but will they be able to get it out of the ground in time for the festival? The play is on February 10 and costs £11 and children for £8.50.

LGBT history

MOON WALK Young star-gazers can enjoy mornings thinking about the Moon at the Royal Observatory’s Out of This World events.

The National Maritime Museum will be hosting Out At Sea, with interactive workshops and the chance to meet a cross-dressing pirate and discover a treasure trove from 11am to 4pm on February 10.

Goliaths in Greenwich Get transported back to the Cretaceous at new dinosaur time-travel experience

Dinosaurs are once again set to roam the Earth – Greenwich to be precise – as a new show is brought to the area.

Dinosaurs in the Wild will transport visitors back 67 million years in a time machine to see dinos like the T Rex and Dakoraptor in their natural habitat.

The time machine will whisk visitors to join scientists at research station TimeBase67, built on the Late Cretaceous plains 67 million years ago. Guides will then drive with their guides through herds of dinosaurs, can watch a dinosaur autopsy, watch babies come out of their eggs and even put their hands in dino poo!

The show has already had runs in Manchester and Birmingham, and opens in Greenwich Peninsula on Saturday, February 10.

Producer Jill Bryant said: “Time-

travellers who have already visited the TimeBase have been astounded by what they experienced there, with one of them recently commenting that the adventure is “literally the closest you’ll ever get to feeling like dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops are with you – alive!”.

ini Italiani is all about the wine: good Italian wine, and some of the best Italian nibbles around.

Nina had been excited all week when she knew we were going to this smart, multi-award-winning Greenwich wine bar. Not to mention the coolest off licence in town. Since it opened in September it has built a steady and solid following with people quickly filling up the two floors of tables on Friday nights when they have their Aperitivo: 2 for 1 cocktails and wine.

Nina took charge of the menu and ordered olives, salmon carpaccio and the bruschetta with ricotta and radicchio to start. I ordered a very nice Merlot while Mary Latino, our go-to girl, suggested an Albana Progetto for my partner, which, from one sip, I considered to be one of the nicest wines I’ve tasted for a long, long time.

The olives were like no other; big and with a flavour all of their own; the carpaccio had a citrussy tang from the lime zest that gave it a good kick, but I wasn’t so keen on the bruschetta as I’m not a fan of radicchio (I find it too bitter) although a dash of balsamic vinegar sweetened it enough to eat and enjoy.

There was a nice hum of chatter in Vini Italiani, everyone was taking pleasure in the wine and the sharing plates. After a while Nina got bored with my conversation and chose our next dish: Piatta de Porchetta. This was slices of warm, spit-roasted pork with mustard and grated horseradish. It was so, so nice; moist, juicy, full of flavour and the condiments gave it a zing to remember. Nicholetta, our new server, recommended the Barolo to go with it, which had Nina

agog with anticipation. “That’s my absolute favourite Italian wine,” she said, just about hanging on to her chair. It was a nice red that Nina deemed “marvelous” but I thought my earlier merlot was better.

The second floor was now full.

There were two quartets of women appreciating their wine and food; a trio of Italian men enjoying

wine, and three couples enjoying each other. Nina had ceased enjoying my witty repartee soon after she drank the last drop of her Barolo, and had picked up the menu and wine list for inspiration. She was obviously now ready for her cheese fix because she called on the large Formaggi platter and the Cestino di Pane - a really good selection of breads. Nina was really in her element now and gave me a running commentary on the various cheeses when they arrived. And to be honest, she does know the difference between a Pecorino and a Roccaverano, while I just know what I like.

I revisited the Albana Progetto as my liquid accompaniment with

the cheese course because I had enjoyed the little taste I had earlier, while Nina went for the Alfredosa Montefalco Rosso, a velvety red that had her eyes rolling in ecstasy.

We had by now luxuriated over great wine and excellent food for a leisurely two hours, and it was time for one more course: Cantucci, the Tuscan almond biscuits that I was reliably informed (by Nina) that Italians dunk into their Vin Santo, a dessert wine. So, when in Rome, as they say, we concluded an absolutely wonderful evening dipping biscuits into wine.

Vini Italiani is a place for the wine connoisseur; a place to go for good wine, good food and, I would hope, good conversation. I know that is what we found there.
