O

ne famous Eltham resident is laying himself bare this week.

John Partridge - who many will know from his tenure on the BBC soap opera Eastenders - is performing an intimate and revealing show about his life at The Other Palace.

And it promises to be an emotionally charged and yet engaging affair for fans of the actor who have been lucky enough to get tickets.

Entitled simply Stripped, John first conceived the show in spring last year following the death of his beloved mother and told me, “I decided to do it for different reasons, in a way. I lost my mum in April of last year; she’d had a long struggle with Alzheimer's and it was quite difficult for me. I was a mummy’s boy and proud of it. It had been a long struggle for her and all of us.”

Initially during his bereavement, the performer saw the piece as being a tribute to his late mum; with songs she had taught him included in the programme, “It came out of wanting to be creative through that process.” John explained.

But after an epiphany moment during his grieving, John changed the course of the content and has made the show not only a tribute to his mother, but about the struggles and challenges he’s faced throughout his life and particularly more recently.

“I have become sober. I’m about to turn 47 and I’ve found sobriety and in some part, this is my mum’s parting gift to me. That was the catalyst for me to change and to acknowledge my addictive behaviour.” John explained, “Stripped has become in some ways a union with myself.”

The first performance will poignantly mark John’s 100th day of being sober and will give audiences an insight into the actor’s life, his achievements and the challenges he’s faced.

And it’s been a remarkable journey for the actor who at the age of just nine made the move from his hometown of Manchester to the Royal Ballet School. On completing his studies at the world-renowned Richmond establishment, John Partridge went onto study in Sidcup and has lived in south east London ever since.

“Since I was sixteen I’ve lived in and around Blackheath, Eltham and Greenwich.” John enthused, “Really I’m an adopted southerner.”

John now lives with his husband in Eltham and tells me he loves the mix of country and city living the town offers, “We really love it around here. It’s near enough to town but it’s far enough away.”

And the local community has been invaluable in his rehabilitation over the last few months. “I’ve been going to NA [Narcotics Anonomous]. They

are everywhere, every night of the week and I’ve got a great sense of fellowship from those meetings and from speaking with people there.” John tells me, “I’m really, really grateful for it and really relieved. When you carry that level of addiction, you carry a lot of fear and a lot of anxiety because every situation is a reason to use.”

John will talk about his journey over the last year as well as more widely about his life as a whole during his show, through a mixture

of mediums, “Through poetry, part confessional; I’ve made a couple of short films to illustrate my childhood.”

And there will also be some original compositions, “I wrote a song for my mum when she passed; I speak about Alzheimer's in my show and I’m collecting for the Alzheimer's Society.”

But the Eltham resident has also managed to get another local link into the programme, “There is also the soundtrack to my life; I’m a big fan of David Bowie and Kate Bush

who is also from Eltham.”

John tells me that the superstar songstress provided his first real inspiration to pursue a career in the performing arts and that he has a bit of a thing for her former residence.

“I do have a sneaky ambition to move into Wuthering Heights down in Court Road. I do often drive past it or stand outside and gaze lovingly through the gates.”

John’s 70 minute show at The Other Palace sold out incredibly quickly, although they have

released a few standing tickets due to demand.

And despite looking forward to the performances, John admits he is also slightly nervous, “I do have a bit of apprehension about being so honest and about talking about the struggles I’ve faced but in doing that I feel that it’s only going to help me.”

The Shape of things to come Audiences in Greenwich will be among the first in the UK to see a film tipped for Academy Award success this year. Greenwich Picturehouse has been selected to host an advanced screening of The Shape Of Water, a fantasy film by celebrated storyteller Guillermo del Toro.

Set in the ‘60s, The Shape Of Water is a sweet romantic movie about two lonely hearts, who meet up during their lunch breaks. They spend time listening to records on a portable turntable and swoon as they pass food back and forth.

But these aren’t your regular romantic leads, as Elisa is mute and her boyfriend lives underwater and looks like the Creature from the Black Lagoon. When one morning a big metal tank is wheeled into the basement of the Baltimore laboratory where she works, Elisa is a faced with an exotic amphibian, recently fished from a South American river. And despite the creature being dangerous, Elisa is spellbound and visits the scaly fiend whenever she can.

But it’s Sally Hawkins portrayal of the tortured and silent Elisa that has grasped the attention of critics

and awards panels alike. Hawkins missed out on a Critics Choice Award for Best Actress - the film won four other accolades including Best Picture at the ceremony last month - but many are tipping her to take the title at the forthcoming Academy Awards.

The actress - who was born in Dulwich and brought up in Blackheath - is no stranger to award success having previously won a Best Actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of Poppy Cross, a kind-hearted primary school teacher in the 2008 comedy-drama Happy-Go-Lucky. She’s also been previously nominated for an Oscar too, for the 2013 Woody Allen movie Blue Jasmine.

The Shape Of Water won two gongs at the recent Golden Globes including for Best Score by Alexandre Desplat and many think it will sweep the board when the Academy convenes at their 90th annual ceremony on 4 March.

Sam Creasey at SE9 Container The SE9 Container Gallery in Eltham is hosting an exhibition by an exciting new contemporary British artist.

S

am Creasey is a practising artist and painter currently residing in Brighton and Hove and working out of Red Herring Studios. He has continued to work on a series of new figurative paintings over 2017 and the exhibition - entitled Millennial Fever - will be shown in the Take Courage space at the SE9 Container Gallery until 17 February.

Sam says of his work, “In my painting practice I seek to explore different themes, issues and conditions produced by our increasingly interconnected and online society using painting as my image making vehicle. It is important for me to maintain the analogue nature of the act of painting and its materiality when creating my work. In addition to the ideas the paintings convey in the content, the relationship between viewing and understanding a painting as opposed to Net-Art or rather an artwork without a physical form is also central to my practise.”

The Millennials are people of the same age group, who have similar ideas, problems, and attitudes.

This group of people is the most familiar with communications, media and digital technology and

it is saturated into their everyday living for good and often bad.

Most of this group are users of giant Web 2.0 platforms and social media that have thrown the internet into a fascinatingly mysterious and

increasingly hazardous place.

The Internet is the decisive technology of the Information Age. As people are increasingly at ease in the Web’s multidimensionality, marketers, government, and civil

society are migrating massively to the networks people construct by themselves and for themselves.

At root, social-networking entrepreneurs are really selling spaces in which people can freely and autonomously construct their lives.

The influence of the Internet on our society is central to Sam’s practice and is the source for most of his reference material.

Photoshop collages from Internet sourced images are initially made to plan out the bigger canvases, utilising a grid format to work to the desired scale. This also allows for parts to be added or taken away at will. The content of these collages is made up of a variety of images; from screenshots, fashion and tech advertisements, to documentary photography of e-waste, landfill and conflict. Realising these final works in paint on canvas, this slowed, manual approach to image making gives a new meaning to the image or collage as an appropriation or documentation, but also a unique object as a painting in itself. The subject of the work is as heavily involved with painting itself as it is with modern living.

Pirated material T

he folks at Ferrier Operatic Society are hosting a very special bit of interactive theatre this week. The talented troupe is opening its doors to fans of Gilbert and Sullivan as they stage The Pirates of Penzance from scratch at New Eltham Methodist Church on 4 February.

The society, who rehearse in Blackheath, was founded in 1973 in Eltham and have been producing shows and concerts annually ever since. They came across the idea to host The Pirates of Penzance from scratch as a social and fun way to raise money.

Committee member Lesley Corti told me, “It’s got to be something everyone knows and so we thought, let’s do it as a social fundraising event.”

And there’s no doubt that fans of operetta will be familiar this one.

The Pirates of Penzance was first performed in New York in 1879 and its London debut followed in 1880.

The fifth collaboration between Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert, the story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates.

He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love.

Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February, and so, technically, he has a birthday only once each leap year. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his "twentyfirst birthday", meaning that he must serve for another 63 years.

Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Along with The Mikado and H.M.S Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance remains one of the most frequently played Gilbert and Sullivan operas.

With immensely famous songs including “I am the very model of a modern Major-General” and “Hail, Poetry” it is infinitely recognisable.

Ferrier Operatic held auditions for the leading roles back in December

and Lesley explains how the day of the performance will pan out, “In the afternoon the principals have a rehearsal and that will be the first time they have got together.

Anybody who would like to come along and join the chorus are welcome.”

You’ll be given a score to read from and will sit with others with the same voice (i.e. sopranos with sopranos and tenors with tenors etc.), so there’ll be plenty of support for those who are a little nervous.

“At 7:30 we will start and anybody’s welcome to come along and sing or just sit in the audience and listen.” Lesley said, “It’s such a good sing. Just come along and sing or just listen and enjoy it” The company is also deep into rehearsals for their next fully staged production, which is another Gilbert and Sullivan classic Iolanthe. The operetta will be performed at the Bob Hope Theatre from 24 – 26 May 2018.

It was dinner for one again this week (maybe I should be writing a lonely hearts page rather than a food review!) and this time the venue was Delicio Bistro Restaurant on Eltham High Street. It was Friday night and the place was moderately busy, but not so packed to the gunnels that I felt self-conscious at being alone.

The Mediterranean restaurant is owned by a family of chefs, who have created a wonderfully varied menu, which includes cuisine from Italy, Turkey, Spain, Greece and Portugal and they also boast an authentic clay oven for stone baking pizzas.

I had a large glass of a full-bodied Rioja to warm me up and then chose to start with a dish of falafel, which was served on a bed of salad and accompanied with humus to dip it into. The falafel was wonderfully spicy and when married with the crisp salad and creamy humus was a healthy feast all on its own.

Right on the corner of Passey Place, the restaurant feels very much in the heart of the community and with its large windows, is a great place for people watching.

When I first arrived, there was chilled European pop playing in the background and a generally relaxed vibe. But after a few minutes, I was joined in the rear of the establishment by a tween birthday party, who made the atmosphere much more lively and entertaining!

It’s so fantastic to hear what children think of the food and the service and I can tell you the party of 10 loved it (very loudly!)

While I chuckled at the childhood twittering, I munched on my main course, a combination grill, which consisted of lamb shish, chicken shish and lamb cutlets served with rice and salad. The chicken and lamb shish were wonderfully succulent, but I have to say, I found the lamb cutlets a bit of a chore.

the damage Falafel Combination grill Drinks They were a bit too much bone and not enough meat for me and didn’t really fit with the other tasty morsels on my plate. The salad was excellent however, with shredded carrot and red cabbage adding a bit of colour and it was a nice touch to have chickpeas mixed in with the rice.

The service was fast and friendly and it was great to see that they dealt with the big parties with real care and attention.

Delicio is a great family friendly place that serves good food at a reasonable price.

One hundred and twenty five businesses were nominated across ten categories, 50 businesses shortlisted and the winners announced to a packed out room of 350 people.
